Abstract
Benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), is a carcinogenic contaminant of concern in seafood. This study developed a simple, rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor (AuNPs) coupled with chemometric models for detecting BbF in shrimp samples. Partial least squares (PLS) regression models were optimized using uninformative variable elimination (UVE), bootstrapping soft shrinkage (BOSS), and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS). Qualitative analysis was performed using principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) to differentiate between BbF-contaminated and uncontaminated shrimp samples. The SERS-sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (LOD = 0.12 ng/mL), repeatability (RSD = 6.21%), and anti-interference performance. CARS-PLS model demonstrated superior predictive ability (R2 = 0.9944), and qualitative analysis discriminated between contaminated and uncontaminated samples. The sensor's accuracy was validated using HPLC, demonstrating the ability of the SERS-sensor coupled with chemometrics to rapidly and reliably detect BbF in shrimp samples.

Abstract
In the ongoing pursuit of enhancing food safety and quality through advanced technologies, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) stand out for their antimicrobial properties. Despite being overshadowed by other nanoparticles in food sensing applications, AgNPs possess inherent qualities that make them effective tools for rapid and selective contaminant detection in food matrices. This review aims to reinvigorate the interest in AgNPs in the food industry, emphasizing their sensing mechanism and the transformative potential of integrating them with artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced food safety monitoring. It discusses key AI tools and principles in the food industry, demonstrating their positive impact on food analytical chemistry. The interplay between AI and biosensors offers many advantages and adaptability to dynamic analytical challenges, significantly improving food safety monitoring and potentially redefining the landscape of food safety and quality assurance.

Abstract
Flexible electronics offer a versatile, rapid, cost-effective and portable solution to monitor water contamination, which poses serious threat to the environment and human health. This review paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the versatile platforms of flexible electronics in the context of heavy metal ion detection in water systems. The review overviews of the fundamental principles of heavy metal ion detection, surveys the state-of-the-art materials and fabrication techniques for flexible sensors, analyses key performance metrics and limitations, and discusses future opportunities and challenges. By highlighting recent advances in nanomaterials, polymers, wireless integration, and sustainability, this review aims to serve as an essential resource for researchers, engineers, and policy makers seeking to address the critical challenge of heavy metal contamination in water resources. The versatile promise of flexible electronics is thoroughly elucidated to inspire continued innovation in this emerging technology arena.

Abstract
Recently, agriculture systems have faced numerous challenges involving sustainable nutrient use efficiency and feeding, environmental pollution especially heavy metals (HMs), infection of harmful microorganisms, and maintenance of crop production quality during postharvesting and packaging. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials have emerged as powerful tools in agriculture applications that provide alternatives or support traditional methods. This review aims to address and highlight the current overarching issue and various implementation strategies of nanotechnology for sustainable agriculture development. In particular, the current progress of different nano-fertilizers (NFs) systems was analyzed to show their advances in enhancing the uptake and translocations in plants and improving nutrient bioavailability in soil. Also, the design strategy and application of nanotechnology for rapid detection of HMs and pathogenic diseases in plant crops were emphasized. The engineered nanomaterials have great potential for biosensors with high sensitivity and selectivity, high signal throughput, and reproducibility through various detection approaches such as Raman, colorimetric, biological, chemical, and electrical sensors. We obtain that the development of microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip (LoC) technologies offers the opportunity to create on-site portable and smart biodevices and chips for real-time monitoring of plant diseases. The last part of this work is a brief introduction to trends in nanotechnology for harvesting and packaging to provide insights into the overall applications of nanotechnology for crop production quality. This review provides the current advent of nanotechnology in agriculture, which is essential for further studies examining novel applications for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Food safety is the basis for ensuring human survival and development. The threat of heavy metal ions to food safety has become a social concern with the rapid growth of the economy and the accompanying environmental pollution. Some heavy metal ions are highly toxic even at trace levels and pose significant health risks to humans. Therefore, ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions in food samples is important. In this mini-review, recent advances in the analytical methods based on nanomaterials for detecting trace heavy metal ions in food samples are summarized in three categories: electrochemical, colorimetric, and fluorescent methods. We present the features and sensing mechanisms of these three methods, along with typical examples to illustrate their application in the detection of heavy metal ions in foods. This mini-review ends with a discussion of current challenges and future prospects of these approaches for sensing heavy metal ions. The review will help readers understand the principles of these methods, thereby promoting the development of new analytical methods for the detection of heavy metal ions in food samples.

Abstract
Water pollution caused by hazardous substances, particularly heavy metal (HM) ions, poses a threat to human health and the environment. Traditional methods for measuring HM in water are expensive and time-consuming and require extensive sample preparation. Therefore, developing robust, simple, and sensitive techniques for the detection and classification of HM is needed. We propose an optical approach that exploits the full scattering profile, meaning the angular intensity distribution, and utilizes the iso-pathlength (IPL) point. This point appears where the intensity is constant for different scattering coefficients, while the absorption coefficient is set. The absorption does not affect the IPL point position, it only reduces its intensity. In this paper, we explore the wavelength influence on the IPL point both in Monte Carlo simulations and experimentally. Next, we present the characterization of ferric chloride (FeCl2) by this phenomenon. Eventually, we exhibit the detection of FeCl2 and intralipid mixed in concentrations of 50-100 and 20-30 ppm, respectively. These findings endorse the idea that the IPL point is an intrinsic parameter of a system serving as an absolute calibration point. The method provides an efficient way of differentiating contamination in water. Its characterization technique is easy, precise, and versatile making it preferable for water monitoring.

Abstract
Cadmium is a representative carcinogenic heavy metal. Because of the long biological half-life of cadmium, it is critical to prevent and detect cadmium inflow into the body. In this study, we developed the biomimetic magneto-gold nano-urchin (MGNU)-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chip for ultrasensitive detection of cadmium. The MGNU SERS chip was facilely fabricated using three-dimensional (3D) printed magnetic molds. The 3D printed magnetic molds were designed for contributing to (1) making hydrophobic/hydrophilic areas and (2) magnetic SERS enhancement by attracting the MGNUs. To validate the performance of the MGNU SERS chip, we conducted electromagnetic simulations and measurements of SERS efficiencies. Consequently, we detected cadmium ions up to 1.33 pM in distilled water. Moreover, we succeeded to detect cadmium ions in the real environmental samples up to 2.76 pM in the tap water and 14.21 pM in the human blood plasma, respectively. The MGNU SERS chip is a powerful SERS substrate that can be used in various spectrometer-based sensing platforms.

Abstract
Tea plants absorb chromium-contaminated soil and water and accumulate in tea leaves. Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) is a very toxic heavy metal; excessive intake of tea containing Cr6+ can cause serious harm to human health. A reliable and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method was developed using Au@Ag nanoparticles as an enhanced substrate for the determination of Cr6+ in tea. The Au@AgNPs coated with carbimazole showed a highly selective reaction to Cr6+ in tea samples through a redox reaction between Cr6+ and carbimazole. The Cr6+ in the contaminated tea sample reacted with methimazole-the hydrolysate of carbimazole-to form disulfide, which led to the decrease in the Raman intensity of the peak at 595 cm-1. The logarithm of the concentration of Cr6+ has a linear relationship with the Raman intensity at the characteristic peak and showed a limit of detection of 0.945 mg/kg for the tea sample. The carbimazole functionalized Au@AgNPs showed high selectivity in analyzing Cr6+ in tea samples, even in the presence of other metal ions. The SERS detection technique established in this study also showed comparable results with the standard ICP-MS method, indicating the applicability of the established technique in practical applications.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are nutritious, tasty, and have medicinal value, which makes them very popular. Fresh mushrooms have a high water content and a crisp texture. They demonstrate strong metabolic activity after harvesting. However, they are prone to textural changes, microbial infestation, and nutritional and flavor loss, and they therefore require appropriate post-harvest processing and preservation. Important factors affecting safety and quality during their processing and storage include their quality, source, microbial contamination, physical damage, and chemical residues. Thus, these aspects should be tested carefully to ensure safety. In recent years, many new techniques have been used to preserve mushrooms, including electrofluidic drying and cold plasma treatment, as well as new packaging and coating technologies. In terms of detection, many new detection techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), imaging technology, and spectroscopy can be used as rapid and effective means of detection. This paper reviews the new technological methods for processing and detecting the quality of mainstream edible mushrooms. It mainly introduces their working principles and application, and highlights the future direction of preservation, processing, and quality detection technologies for edible mushrooms. Adopting appropriate post-harvest processing and preservation techniques can maintain the organoleptic properties, nutrition, and flavor of mushrooms effectively. The use of rapid, accurate, and non-destructive testing methods can provide a strong assurance of food safety. At present, these new processing, preservation and testing methods have achieved good results but at the same time there are certain shortcomings. So it is recommended that they also be continuously researched and improved, for example through the use of new technologies and combinations of different technologies. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Food contamination and spoilage is a worldwide concern considering its adverse effect on public health and food security. Real time monitoring food quality can reduce the risk of foodborne disease to consumers. Particularly, the emergence of multi-emitter luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) as ratiometric sensory materials has provided the possibility for food quality and safety detection with high sensitivity and selectivity taking advantage of specific host-guest interactions, pre-concentrating and molecule-sieving effects of MOFs. Furthermore, the excellent sensing performance of multi-emitter MOF-based ratiometric sensors including self-calibration, multi-dimensional recognition and visual signal readout is able to meet the increasing rigor requirement of food safety evaluation. Multi-emitter MOF-based ratiometric sensors have become the focus of food safety detection. This review focuses on design strategies for different multiple emission sources assembly to construct multi-emitter MOFs materials based on at least two emitting centers. The design strategies for creating multi-emitter MOFs can be mainly classified into three categories: (1) multiple emission building blocks assembly in a single MOF phase; (2) single non-luminescent MOF or LMOF phase as a matrix for chromophore guest(s); (3) heterostructured hybrids of LMOF with other luminescent materials. In addition, the sensing signal output modes of multi-emitter MOF-based ratiometric sensors have critically discussed. Next, we highlight the recent progress for the development of multi-emitter MOF as ratiometric sensors in food contamination and spoilage detection. Their future improvement and advancing direction potential for their practical application is finally discussed.

Abstract
Mercury ion, as a metal cation with great toxic effect, is widely present in various production and living environments. It seriously threatens human health and environmental safety. It is of great significance to develop convenient and effective methods for mercury ion detection. Here, we designed and synthesized a new ratiometric fluorescent probe (namely APS-NA) for the detection of mercury ions in the environment and multiple biological samples. The probe is constructed by covalently connecting two fluorophores with lipolic acid to achieve fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In the molecular structure of APS-NA, acridone is used as an energy donor, 1,8-naphthalimide is used as an energy acceptor, and a dithioacetal group is used as the reaction site for Hg2+. The intact APS-NA mainly shows the green fluorescence from the acceptor moiety 1,8-naphthalimide; the presence of Hg2+ ions would break the dithioacetal linkage between acridone and 1,8-naphthalimide; the defunctionalization of FRET would lead to bright blue fluorescence emission of acridone; thus ratiometric fluorescent detection of Hg2+ can be achieved by this recognition process. The probe not only has a large Stokes shift (Δλ = 110 nm), but also has high selectivity, high sensitivity (low detection limit 30 nM) and naked eye visualization. In addition, we have successfully used this probe for the detection Hg2+ of actual samples and imaging of a variety of organisms. These results indicate that the probe has broad application prospects.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations allow us to reproduce the SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) spectra of molecules adsorbed on nanostructured metal surfaces and extract the most information this spectroscopy is potentially able to provide. The latter point mainly concerns the anchoring mechanism and the bond strength between molecule and metal as well as the structural and electronic modifications of the adsorbed molecule. These findings are of fundamental importance for the application of this spectroscopic technique. This review presents and discusses some SERS-DFT studies carried out in Italy as a collaboration between the universities of Modena and Reggio-Emilia and of Florence, giving an overview of the information that we can extract with a combination of experimental SERS spectra and DFT modeling. In addition, a selection of the most recent studies and advancements on the DFT approach to SERS spectroscopy is reported with commentary.

Abstract
Heavy metal ions (HMIs) pose a serious threat to the environment and human body because they are toxic and non-biodegradable and widely exist in environmental ecosystems. It is necessary to develop a rapid, sensitive and convenient method for HMIs detection to provide a strong guarantee for ecology and human health. Ion-imprinted electrochemical sensors (IIECSs) based on nanomaterials have been regarded as an excellent technology because of the good selectivity, the advantages of fast detection speed, low cost, and portability. Electrode surfaces modified with nanomaterials can obtain excellent nano-effects, such as size effect, macroscopic quantum tunneling effect and surface effect, which greatly improve its surface area and conductivity, so as to improve the detection sensitivity and reduce the detection limit of the sensor. Hence, the present review focused on the fundamentals and the synthetic strategies of ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) and IIECSs for HMIs detection, as well as the applications of various nanomaterials as modifiers and sensitizers in the construction of HMIIECSs and the influence on the sensing performance of the fabricated sensors. Finally, the potential challenges and outlook on the future development of the HMIIECSs technology were also highlighted. By means of the points presented in this review, we hope to provide some help in further developing the preparation methods of high-performance HMIIECSs and expanding their potential applications.

Abstract
The rapid and selective identification of heavy metal ions is crucial for environmental water safety. In this study, a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active catcher was designed for Cu(II) detection using a hydrophobic hydroxyoxime-mediated plasmonic silver membrane (HOX@Ag-PVDF). Uniformly dispersed Ag nanoparticles (ca. 80 nm) and hydroxyoxime molecules were synchronously decorated on the skeleton of the polyvinylidene fluoride membrane via an in situ interfacial assembly strategy. HOX@Ag-PVDF shows excellent SERS activity (EF = 2.5 × 107), high reproducibility (~8% RSD), and long-term stability (50 days) for detecting 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP). Moreover, HOX@Ag-PVDF can serve as a new platform for rapid and dry-free SERS detection of Cu(II) owing to its strong affinity and surface hydrophobicity. Cu(II) ions can be rapidly captured in 5 s and selectively recognized by SERS signals without interference from other metal ions. HOX@Ag-PVDF exhibits linear SERS response signals at low concentrations ranging from 10-6 to 10-10 mol/L Cu(II) (R2 = 0.9893) with a low detection limit (LOD) of 52.0 pmol/L. This hydrophobic plasmonic membrane, with its simple sampling and rapid SERS response characteristics, provides ultrasensitive recognition and heavy metal detection for practical applications.

Abstract
Cellulose fiber/paper-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is considered as a promising food safety detection technology due to its non-toxicity, low cost, flexibility, and hygroscopicity for possible rapid on-site agricultural product contaminant detection. However, it faces the problems of poor noble metal adhesion and toxic noble metal reducing agent. In this study, a natural macromolecule—xylan was used as both a reducing agent and a stabilizing agent to prepare stable Au-Ag bimetal nanoparticles, which were anchored on the paper surface by xylans in order to fabricate a paper-based Au-Ag bimetallic SERS substrate. The results show that the SERS substrate has a high Raman enhancement performance and reproductively. The substrate can effectively detect trace pesticide, i.e., thiram, and the limit of detection is as low as 1 × 10–6 mol/L (0.24 ppm). In addition, the paper-based SERS substrate can be used for direct detection of pesticide residues on the surface of fruit. The paper-based SERS substrate developed in this study has great potential in applications for rapid food safety detection.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used as a powerful analytical technology in cutting-edge areas such as food safety, biology, chemistry, and medical diagnosis, providing ultra-fast, ultra-sensitive, nondestructive characterization and achieving ultra-high detection sensitivity even down to the single-molecule level. Development of Raman spectroscopy is strongly dependent on high-performance SERS substrates, which have long evolved from the early days of rough metal electrodes to periodic nanopatterned arrays building on solid supporting substrates. For rigid SERS substrates, however, their applications are restricted by sophisticated pretreatments for detecting solid samples with non-planar surfaces. It is therefore essential to reassert the principles in constructing flexible SERS substrates. Herein, we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art in understanding, preparing and using flexible SERS. The basic mechanisms behind the flexible SERS are briefly outlined, typical design strategies are highlighted and diversified selection of materials in preparing flexible SERS substrates are reviewed. Then the recent achievements of various interdisciplinary applications based on flexible SERS substrates are summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future evolution of flexible SERS and their applications are demonstrated. We propose new research directions focused on stimulating the real potential of SERS as an advanced analytical technique for commercialization.

Abstract
Fish is one of the highly demanded aquatic products, and its quality and safety play a pivotal role in daily diet. However, the possible hazardous substance in perishable fish both in pre- and postharvest periods may decrease their values and pose a threat to public health. Laborious and expensive traditional methods drive the need of developing effective tools for detecting fish quality and safety properties in a rapid, nondestructive, and effective manner. Recent advances in Raman spectroscopy (RS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have shown enormous potential in various aspects, which largely boost their applications in fish quality and safety evaluation. They have incomparable merits such as providing molecule fingerprint information and allowing for rapid, sensitive, and noninvasive detection with simple sample preparation. This review provides a comprehensive overview focusing on the applications of RS and SERS for fish quality assessment and safety inspection, highlighting the hazardous substance and illegal behavior both in preharvest (veterinary drug residues and environmental pollutants) and postharvest (freshness and illegal behavior) particularly. Moreover, challenges and prospects are also proposed to facilitate the vigorous development of RS and SERS. This review is aimed to emphasize potential opportunities for applying RS and SERS as promising techniques for routine food quality and safety detection. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: With these applications, it can be clearly indicated that RS and SERS are promising and powerful in fish quality and safety surveillance, thereby reducing the occurrence of commercial fraud and food safety issues. More efforts still should be concentrated on exploiting the high-performance Raman instruments, establishing a universal Raman database, developing reproducible SERS substrates and combing RS with other versatile spectral techniques to promote these technologies from laboratory to practice. It is hoped that this review should arouse more research interests in RS and SERS technologies for fish quality and safety surveillance, as well as provide more insights to make a breakthrough.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most widely distributed, most toxic, and most harmful, and it is widely present in moldy grains. This study proposes a new method for quantitative and rapid determination of the AFB1 content in maize based on Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectra of maize samples with different mildew degrees were collected by a portable laser Raman spectroscopy system. Three different spectral selection methods, which were bootstrapping soft shrinkage (BOSS), variable combination population analysis (VCPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), were applied to optimize the characteristic wavelength variables of the pretreated Raman spectra. The support vector machine (SVM) detection models based on different optimized characteristic wavelength variables were established, and the results of each detection model were compared. The results obtained showed that the performance of the SVM models established by optimized features was significantly better than the performance of the SVM model built by full-spectrum data. Among them, the SVM model based on the characteristic wavelength variables optimized by the CARS method had the best performance, and its root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 3.5377 μg∙kg-1, the determination coefficient of prediction (RP2) was 0.9715, and the relative prediction deviation (RPD) was 5.8258. The overall results reveal that the rapid quantitative detection of the AFB1 in maize by Raman spectroscopy has a promising application prospect. In addition, the implementation of the characteristic wavelength optimization of Raman spectra in the model calibration process can effectively improve the detection accuracy of chemometric models.

Abstract
Sichuan pickle is one of popular traditional fermented foods in China. However, the contamination of heavy metals in Sichuan pickle, particularly home-made Sichuan pickle and aged pickle brine, is little known. Therefore, the content of trace (Cr, Cu, and Zn) and toxic elements (As, Pb, and Cd) in Sichuan industrial pickle (SIP), Sichuan home-made pickle (SHP), and aged pickle brine collected from local markets and families in Sichuan province, respectively, was detected by inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) and the health risk was assessed by target hazard quotients including target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ). Consequently, the mean concentrations of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Cd were 0.122, 0.540, 2.516, 0.023, 0.015, and 0.106 mg/kg in SIP and 0.071, 0.364, 2.698, 0.014, 0.015, and 0.289 mg/kg in SHP, respectively, lower than the maximum allowable concentrations set by Chinese regulations, except for Cr and Cd in few samples. Principal component analysis of the heavy metal content could obviously distinguish between SIP and SHP. The content of As, Pb, and Cd in leaf pickles was significantly higher than that in pickles fermented with other types of vegetables. A significant enrichment of heavy metals in aged pickle brine over 10 years was observed, but pickle jars had no significant effect on heavy metal content in aged pickle brine. The intake of heavy metals through daily consumption of SIP and SHP was at a safe level, whereas the TTHQ of leaf pickle was 1.006, indicating a potential health risk. In conclusion, this study provided fundamental data for food safety assurance of Sichuan pickle. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Sichuan pickle is one of popular traditional fermented foods in China. In the present study, we investigated the contamination of heavy metals in Sichuan pickles by detecting the content of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in Sichuan industrial pickle, Sichuan home-made pickle, and aged pickle brine, and estimated the health risk to local residents. This study can provide a reference for the safety risk of Sichuan industrial and home-made pickle in terms of heavy metal contamination, and enhance the food safety in the processing, production, and consumption of Sichuan pickle in local families and pickle industry.

Abstract
Based on the electrostatic interaction, we constructed a ratiometric fluorescence nanomixture of graphene quantum dots-gold nanoclusters (GQDs-AuNCs) for the quantitative detection of Cu2+ and Cd2+. When Cu2+ or Cd2+ was added into the reaction system, the fluorescence of GSH-AuNCs at 565 nm can be quenched by Cu2+ and enhanced by Cd2+ while the intensity of N-GQDs at 403 nm stayed constant. Under the optimized conditions, the fluorescence intensity ratio (I565/I403) of the GQDs-AuNCs system was proportional to the concentration of Cu2+ and Cd2+ in the range of 8×10-8 mol/L-6×10-6 mol/L and 1×10-6 mol/L-4×10-5 mol/L, respectively, with detection limits of 4.12×10-9 mol/L and 9.43×10-7 mol/L, respectively. In the presence of Cu2+ and Cd2+, the paper-based vision sensor would produce visible fluorescent color changes, which can be used for rapid detection on site. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ and Cd2+ in scallops with satisfactory results.
