Non-covalent polymer wrapping of carbon nanotubes and the role of wrapped polymers as functional dispersants

Therapeutic and diagnostic applications of carbon nanotubes in cancer: recent advances and challenges

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon, composed of carbon atoms forming a tube-like structure. Their high surface area, chemical stability, and rich electronic polyaromatic structure facilitate their drug-carrying capacity. Therefore, CNTs have been intensively explored for several biomedical applications, including as a potential treatment option for cancer. By incorporating smart fabrication strategies, CNTs can be designed to specifically target cancer cells. This targeted drug delivery approach not only maximizes the therapeutic utility of CNTs but also minimizes any potential side effects of free drug molecules. CNTs can also be utilised for photothermal therapy (PTT) which uses photosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill cancer cells, and in immunotherapeutic applications. Regarding the latter, for example, CNT-based formulations can preferentially target intra-tumoural regulatory T-cells. CNTs also act as efficient antigen presenters. With their capabilities for photoacoustic, fluorescent and Raman imaging, CNTs are excellent diagnostic tools as well. Further, metallic nanoparticles, such as gold or silver nanoparticles, are combined with CNTs to create nanobiosensors to measure biological reactions. This review focuses on current knowledge about the theranostic potential of CNT, challenges associated with their large-scale production, their possible side effects and important parameters to consider when exploring their clinical usage.

Geometric Transformation of Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes-Based Heterometallic Nanostructured Material: A Model for the Electrochemical Discrimination of Insecticides

Multifunctional carbon-based materials exhibit a large number of unprecedented active sites via an electron transfer process and act as a desired platform for exploring high-performance electroactive material. Herein, we exemplify the holistic design of a heterometallic nanostructured material (MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb) formed by the integration of metals (Mn2+, Sn2+, and Pb2+) and a dipodal ligand (KR-6) at the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). First, MWCNTs@KR-6 was readily synthesized via a noncovalent approach, which was further sequentially doped by Mn2+, Sn2+, and Pb2+ to give MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb. The designed material showed excellent electrochemical activity for the discrimination of insecticides belonging to structurally different classes. In contrast to that of the individual building components, both the stability and electrochemical activity of heterometallic nanostructured material were remarkably enhanced, resulting in a magnificent electrochemical performance of the developed material. Hence, the current work reports a comprehensive synthetic approach for MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb synthesis by synergizing unique properties of the heterometallic complex with MWCNTs. This work also offers a new insight into the design of multifunctional carbon-based materials for discrimination of different analytes on the basis of their redox potential.

Carbon Nanotube Films with Fewer Impurities and Higher Conductivity from Aqueously Mono-Dispersed Solution via Two-Step Filtration for Electric Heating

With the intensification of global climate problems, electric heating has recently attracted much attention as a clean and low-carbon heating method. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are an ideal medium for electric heating applications due to their excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. The preparation of electrothermal films based on an aqueous CNT dispersion as a raw material is environmentally friendly. However, in the traditional one-step filtration method, the residual excess dispersant and the small aspect ratio of the CNTs in the preparation process limit the performance of electrothermal CNT films. In this paper, we report a two-step filtration method that removes the free dispersant and small CNTs in the first filtration step and obtains denser CNT films by controlling the pores of the filter membrane in the second filtration step. The results suggest that, compared to the CNT1 film obtained from one-step filtration, the CNT1-0.22 film, obtained from two-step filtration using 1 and 0.22 μm membranes, has a smoother and flatter surface, and the surface resistance is 80.0 Ω sq-1, which is 29.4% lower. The convective radiation conversion efficiency of the CNT1-0.22 film is 3.36 mW/°C, which is 36.1% lower. We anticipate that such CNT films could be widely applied in building thermal insulation and underfloor heating.

Carbon Nanomaterial Fluorescent Probes and Their Biological Applications

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have broadly useful chemical and photophysical attributes that are conducive to applications in biology. In this review, we focus on materials whose photophysics allow for the use of these materials in biomedical and environmental applications, with emphasis on imaging, biosensing, and cargo delivery. The review focuses primarily on graphitic carbon nanomaterials including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, as well as carbon dots and carbon nanohoops. Recent advances in and future prospects of these fields are discussed at depth, and where appropriate, references to reviews pertaining to older literature are provided.

Advances in Conductive Hydrogel for Spinal Cord Injury Repair and Regeneration

Spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment represents a major challenge in clinical practice. In recent years, the rapid development of neural tissue engineering technology has provided a new therapeutic approach for spinal cord injury repair. Implanting functionalized electroconductive hydrogels (ECH) in the injury area has been shown to promote axonal regeneration and facilitate the generation of neuronal circuits by reshaping the microenvironment of SCI. ECH not only facilitate intercellular electrical signaling but, when combined with electrical stimulation, enable the transmission of electrical signals to electroactive tissue and activate bioelectric signaling pathways, thereby promoting neural tissue repair. Therefore, the implantation of ECH into damaged tissues can effectively restore physiological functions related to electrical conduction. This article focuses on the dynamic pathophysiological changes in the SCI microenvironment and discusses the mechanisms of electrical stimulation/signal in the process of SCI repair. By examining electrical activity during nerve repair, we provide insights into the mechanisms behind electrical stimulation and signaling during SCI repair. We classify conductive biomaterials, and offer an overview of the current applications and research progress of conductive hydrogels in spinal cord repair and regeneration, aiming to provide a reference for future explorations and developments in spinal cord regeneration strategies.

Sterically Allowed H-type Supramolecular Polymerizations

The functionalization of π-conjugated scaffolds with sterically demanding substituents is a widely used tactic to suppress cofacial (H-type) stacking interactions, which may even inhibit self-assembly. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate herein that increasing steric effects can result in an enhanced thermodynamic stability of H-type supramolecular polymers. In our approach, we have investigated two boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes with bulky phenyl (2) and mesityl (3) meso-substituents and compared their self-assembly in nonpolar media with that of a parent meso-methyl BODIPY 1 lacking bulky groups. While the enhanced steric demand induces pathway complexity, the superior thermodynamic stability of the H-type pathways can be rationalized in terms of additional enthalpic gain arising from intermolecular C-H⋅⋅⋅F-B interactions of the orthogonally arranged aromatic substituents, which overrule their inherent steric demand. Our findings underline the importance of balancing competing non-covalent interactions in self-assembly.

A bimetallic Fe-Mg MOF with a dual role as an electrode in asymmetric supercapacitors and an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)

In this work, a novel bimetallic Fe-Mg/MOF was synthesized through a cost-effective and rapid hydrothermal process. The structure, morphology, and composition were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Further, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement showed a 324 m2 g-1 surface area for Fe-Mg/MOF. The Fe-Mg/MOF achieved 1825 C g-1 capacity at 1.2 A g-1 current density, which is higher than simple Fe-MOF (1144 C g-1) and Mg-MOF (1401 C g-1). To assess the long-term stability of the asymmetric device, the bimetallic MOF supercapattery underwent 1000 charge/discharge cycles and retained 85% of its initial capacity. The energy and power densities were calculated to be 57 W h kg-1 and 2393 W kg-1, respectively. Additionally, Fe-Mg/MOF showed superior electrocatalytic performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by demonstrating a smaller Tafel slope of 51.43 mV dec-1. Our research lays the foundation for enhancing the efficiency of energy storage technologies, paving the way for more sustainable and robust energy solutions.

Superior Carrier Mobility Enabled by the Charge Channel Leads to Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in BiCuSeO Composites

BiCuSeO oxyselenides possess a highlighted thermoelectric performance among oxides, which originates from their intrinsically low thermal conductivity. However, intrinsic factors causing low thermal transport are also detrimental to carrier transport, leading to ultralow carrier mobility and relatively low electrical transport properties. Here, high-conductivity single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are adopted as the charge channels to be embedded in a BiCuSeO-based matrix, providing a transport pathway for charge carriers. The results show that carrier mobility is increased to 188 cm2 V-1 s-1 due to the SWCNTs composited, triggering an enhancement in electrical transport properties. Besides, the SWCNTs embedded in the matrix introduce abundant interfaces, suppressing phonon transport and depressing lattice thermal conductivity. With these achievements, a maximum zT of 0.84 at 818 K is realized in the composite with 0.1 wt% SWCNTs. The mechanical property of the composites is strengthened as well because of the SWCNTs. The work indicates that the SWCNTs, as the charge channels, propose an effective approach for enhancing carrier mobility in BiCuSeO-based materials, finally optimizing the thermoelectric performance as well as the mechanical property.

Biomedical Silicones: Leveraging Additive Strategies to Propel Modern Utility

Silicones have a long history of use in biomedical devices, with unique properties stemming from the siloxane (Si-O-Si) backbone that feature a high degree of flexibility and chemical stability. However, surface, rheological, mechanical, and electrical properties of silicones can limit their utility. Successful modification of silicones to address these limitations could lead to superior and new biomedical devices. Toward improving such properties, recent additive strategies have been leveraged to modify biomedical silicones and are highlighted herein.

Fast Recombination of Charge-Transfer State in Organic Photovoltaic Composite of P3HT and Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes Is the Reason for Its Poor Photovoltaic Performance

Although the photovoltaic performance of the composite of poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) with semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNT) is promising, the short-circuit current density j_SC is much lower than that for typical polymer/fullerene composites. Out-of-phase electron spin echo (ESE) technique with laser excitation of the P3HT/s-SWCNT composite was used to clarify the origin of the poor photogeneration of free charges. The appearance of out-of-phase ESE signal is a solid proof that the charge-transfer state of P3HT⁺/s-SWCNT^- is formed upon photoexcitation and the electron spins of P3HT⁺ and s-SWCNT^- are correlated. No out-of-phase ESE signal was detected in the same experiment with pristine P3HT film. The out-of-phase ESE envelope modulation trace for P3HT/s-SWCNT composite was close to that for the polymer/fullerene photovoltaic composite PCDTBT/PC₇₀BM, which implies a similar distance of initial charge separation in the range 2-4 nm. However, out-of-phase ESE signal decay with delay after laser flash increase for P3HT/s-SWCNT composite was much faster, with a characteristic time of 10 µs at 30 K. This points to the higher geminate recombination rate for the P3HT/s-SWCNT composite, which may be one of the reasons for the relatively poor photovoltaic performance of this system.

Amphiphilic silicones for the facile dispersion of carbon nanotubes and formation of soft skin electrodes

Flexible, dry skin electrodes represent a potentially superior alternative to standard Ag/AgCl metal electrodes for wearable devices used in long-term monitoring. Herein, such electrodes were formed using a facile method for dispersing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a silicone matrix using custom amphiphilic dispersive additives (DSPAs). Using only brief mixing and without the use of solvents or surface modification of CNTs, twelve poly(ethylene oxide)-silanes (PEO-SAs) of varying crosslinkability, architecture, siloxane tether length, and molar ratio of siloxane:PEO were combined with an addition cure silicone and CNTs. Nearly all PEO-SA modified silicone-CNT composites demonstrated improved conductivity compared to the unmodified composite. Best conductivities correlated to composites prepared with PEO-SAs that formed micelles of particular sizes (d ~ 200 - 300 nm) and coincided to PEO-SAs with a siloxane:PEO molar ratio of ~ 0.75 - 3.00. Superior dispersion of CNT by such PEO-SAs was exemplified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Advantageously, modified composites retained their moduli, rather than becoming more rigid. Resultant electrodes fabricated with modified composites showed skin-electrode impedance comparable to that of Ag/AgCl electrodes. Combined, these results demonstrate the potential of silicone-CNT composites prepared with PEO-SA DSPAs as flexible, dry electrodes as a superior alternative to traditional electrodes.

ortho-Substituted Aryldiazonium Design for the Defect Configuration-Controlled Photoluminescent Functionalization of Chiral Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Defect functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by chemical modification is a promising strategy for near-infrared photoluminescence (NIR PL) generation at >1000 nm, which has advanced telecom and bio/medical applications. The covalent attachment of molecular reagents generates sp³-carbon defects in the sp²-carbon lattice of SWCNTs with bright red-shifted PL generation. Although the positional difference between proximal sp³-carbon defects, labeled as the defect binding configuration, can dominate NIR PL properties, the defect arrangement chemistry remains unexplored. Here, aryldiazonium reagents with π-conjugated ortho-substituents (phenyl and acetylene groups) were developed to introduce molecular interactions with nanotube sidewalls into the defect-formation chemical reaction. The functionalized chiral SWCNTs selectively emitted single defect PL in the wavelength range of ∼1230-1270 nm for (6,5) tubes, indicating the formation of an atypical binding configuration, different from those exhibited by typical aryl- or alkyl-functionalized chiral tubes emitting ∼1150 nm PL. Moreover, the acetylene-based substituent design enabled PL brightening and a subsequent molecular modification of the doped sites using click chemistry.

Sensors Based on the Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors for Chemical and Biological Analyses

Nano biochemical sensors play an important role in detecting the biomarkers related to human diseases, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become an important factor in promoting the vigorous development of this field due to their special structure and excellent electronic properties. This paper focuses on applying carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNT-FET) biochemical sensors to detect biomarkers. Firstly, the preparation method, physical and electronic properties and functional modification of CNTs are introduced. Then, the configuration and sensing mechanism of CNT-FETs are introduced. Finally, the latest progress in detecting nucleic acids, proteins, cells, gases and ions based on CNT-FET sensors is summarized.

Aqueous Dispersion of Carbon Nanomaterials with Cellulose Nanocrystals: An Investigation of Molecular Interactions

Dispersing carbon nanomaterials in solvents is effective in transferring their significant mechanical and functional properties to polymers and nanocomposites. However, poor dispersion of carbon nanomaterials impedes exploiting their full potential in nanocomposites. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are promising for dispersing and stabilizing pristine carbon nanotubes (pCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (pGnP) in protic media without functionalization. Here, the underlying mechanisms at the molecular level are investigated between CNC and pCNT/pGnP that stabilize their dispersion in polar solvents. Based on the spectroscopy and microscopy characterization of CNCpCNT/pGnP and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an additional intermolecular mechanism is proposed between CNC and pCNT/pGnP that forms carbonoxygen covalent bonds between hydroxyl end groups of CNCs and the defected sites of pCNTs/pGnPs preventing re-agglomeration in polar solvents. This work's findings indicate that the CNC-assisted process enables new capabilities in harnessing nanostructures at the molecular level and tailoring the performance of nanocomposites at higher length scales.

Supramolecular Functionalisation of B/N Co-Doped Carbon Nano-Onions for Novel Nanocarrier Systems

Boron/nitrogen co-doped carbon nano-onions (BN-CNOs) are spherical nanoparticles that consist of multiple inter-nestled fullerene layers, giving them an onion-like internal structure. They have potential as nanocarriers due to their small size, aqueous dispersibility, and biocompatibility. The non-covalent attachment of a biocompatible polymer to BN-CNOs is a simple and effective method of creating a scaffold for a novel nanocarrier system as it allows for increased aqueous dispersibility whilst preventing the immune system from recognising the particle as a foreign object. The non-covalent approach also preserves the electronic and structural properties of the BN-CNOs. In this study, we attached a hyaluronic acid-phospholipid (HA-DMPE) conjugate polymer to the BN-CNO's surface to improve its hydrophilicity and provide targetability toward HA-receptor overexpressing cancer cells. To this end, various ratios of HA-DMPE to BN-CNOs were investigated. The resulting supramolecular systems were characterised via UV-Vis absorption and FTIR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential techniques. It was found that the HA-DMPE conjugate polymer was permanently wrapped around the BN-CNO nanoparticle surface. Moreover, the resulting BN-CNO/HA-DMPE supramolecular systems displayed enhanced aqueous solubility compared to unfunctionalised BN-CNOs, with excellent long-term stability observed in aqueous dispersions.

Precise Synthesis of Concentric Ring, Helicoid, and Ladder Metallo-Polymers with Chevron-Shaped Monomers

Molecular geometry represents one of the most important structural features and governs physical properties and functions of materials. Nature creates a wide array of substances with distinct geometries but similar chemical composition with superior efficiency and precision. However, it remains a formidable challenge to construct abiological macromolecules with various geometries based on identical repeating units, owing to the lack of corresponding synthetic approaches for precisely manipulating the connectivity between monomers and feasible techniques for characterizing macromolecules at the single-molecule level. Herein, we design and synthesize a series of tetratopic monomers with chevron stripe shape which serve as the key precursors to produce four distinct types of metallo-macromolecules with well-defined geometries, viz., the concentric hexagon, helicoid polymer, ladder polymer, and cross-linked polymer, via platinum-acetylide couplings. Concentric hexagon, helicoid, and ladder metallo-polymers are directly visualized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ultra-high-vacuum low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at the single-molecule level. Finally, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are selected as the guest to investigate the structure-property relationship based on such macromolecules, among which the helicoid metallo-polymer shows high efficiency in wrapping SWCNTs with geometry-dependent selectivity.

Influence of Ionomer and Cyanuric Acid on Antistatic, Mechanical, Thermal, and Rheological Properties of Extruded Carbon Nanotube (CNT)/Polyoxymethylene (POM) Nanocomposites

The electrical properties of carbon-based filler-embedded polymer nanocomposites are essential for various applications such as antistatic and electromagnetic interference (EMI) applications. In this study, the impact of additives (i.e., ethylene-co-acid-co-sodium acid copolymer-based ionomer and cyanuric acid) on the antistatic, mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of extruded multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polyoxymethylene (POM) nanocomposites were systematically investigated. The effects of each additive and the combination of additives were examined. Despite a slight reduction in mechanical properties, the incorporation of ionomer (coating on CNTs) and/or cyanuric acid (π-π interaction between CNTs and cyanuric acid) into the POM/CNT nanocomposites improved the CNT dispersity in the POM matrix, thereby enhancing electrical properties such as the electrical conductivity (and surface resistance) and electrical conductivity monodispersity. The optimum composition for the highest electrical properties was determined to be POM/1.5 wt% CNT/3.0 wt% ionomer/0.5 wt% cyanuric acid. The nanocomposites with tunable electrical properties are sought after, especially for antistatic and EMI applications such as electronic device-fixing jigs.

Biosensing with Fluorescent Carbon Nanotubes

Biosensors are powerful tools for modern basic research and biomedical diagnostics. Their development requires substantial input from the chemical sciences. Sensors or probes with an optical readout, such as fluorescence, offer rapid, minimally invasive sensing of analytes with high spatial and temporal resolution. The near‐infrared (NIR) region is beneficial because of the reduced background and scattering of biological samples (tissue transparency window) in this range. In this context, single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have emerged as versatile NIR fluorescent building blocks for biosensors. Here, we provide an overview of advances in SWCNT‐based NIR fluorescent molecular sensors. We focus on chemical design strategies for diverse analytes and summarize insights into the photophysics and molecular recognition. Furthermore, different application areas are discussed—from chemical imaging of cellular systems and diagnostics to in vivo applications and perspectives for the future.

Supramolecular Thermo-Contracting Adhesive Hydrogel with Self-Removability Simultaneously Enhancing Noninvasive Wound Closure and MRSA-Infected Wound Healing

Conventional wound closure and dressing are two crucial, time-consuming but isolated principles in wound care. Even though tissue adhesive opens a new era for wound closure, the method and biomaterial that can simultaneously achieve noninvasive wound closure and promote wound healing are highly appreciated. Herein, a novel supramolecular poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hybrid hydrogel dressing composed of quaternized chitosan-graft-β-cyclodextrin, adenine, and polypyrrole nanotubes via host-guest interaction and hydrogen bonds is developed. The hydrogel demonstrates thermal contraction of 47% remaining area after 2 h at 37 ℃ and tissue adhesion of 5.74 kPa, which are essential for noninvasive wound closure, and multiple mechanical and biological properties including suitable mechanical properties, self-healing, on-demand removal, antioxidant, hemostasis, and photothermal/intrinsic antibacterial activity (higher 99% killing ratio within 5 min after irradiation). In both full-thickness skin incision and excision wound models, the hydrogel reveals significant wound closure after 24 h post-surgery. In acute and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-infected wound and photothermal/intrinsic antibacterial activity assays, wounds treated with the hydrogel demonstrate enhanced wound healing with rapid wound closure rate, mild inflammatory response, advanced angiogenesis, and well-arranged collagen fibers. Altogether, the results indicate the hydrogel is promising in synchronously noninvasive wound closure and enhanced wound healing.

Electrostatic interaction-controlled dispersion of carbon nanotubes in a ternary composite for high-performance supercapacitors

Effective dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is of great importance to achieve their intrinsic performance. Normally, it is believed that CNT dispersion is decided by interactions between CNTs and their dispersants, while other interactions are often neglected. Herein, three ionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecyl dimethyl betaine (BS-12) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), are used to disperse CNTs in a ternary composite, i.e., poly(p-phenylenediamine)-phosphomolybdic acid@reduced graphene oxide (DMoG), respectively, leading to three different DMoGC composites. It has been found that the CNT dispersion in DMoGC was mainly controlled by electrostatic interactions between the surfactants and DMoG, which further exerted vital influences on the constitution, content, morphology, porous structure and supercapacitive performance of the DMoGC composites. Among the three surfactants, cationic CTAB showed the best CNT dispersion, while amphoteric BS-12 could hardly disperse CNTs in DMoGC, leading to DMoGC-CTAB with a 2 times larger specific surface area (152.3 m² g^-1) and 1.5 times higher specific capacitance (422 F g^-1) than those of DMoGC-(BS-12). Our study can provide valuable guidelines for selecting/designing effective dispersants to prepare multi-component composites containing uniformly dispersed CNTs.

Polyethyleneimine-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes Enabling Potent Antimycotic Activity of Lyticase

In this work, the positively-charged polymer polyethyleneimine was used to functionalize carbon nanotubes and activated carbon to load antimycotic enzyme lyticase. Interestingly, polyethyleneimine played a dual role functionalizing carbon materials to synergistically enhance antimycotic activity of loaded lyticase as well as exhibiting its own apparent antimycotic activity, where the enhanced enzymatic activity of loaded lyticase on functionalized carbon nanotubes was more than 2.8 times as high as the activity of free enzyme in solution. The actual activity of loaded lyticase on functionalized carbon nanotubes was applied with Penicillium janthinellum, exhibiting much faster digesting lysis of the bacteria in comparison with free lyticase. The synergistic and potent antimycotic activities from combined action of antimycotic lyticase and polyethyleneimine on carbon nanotubes provides a new antimycotic protection for medicine, food industry, and other biochemical processes.

Highly Flexible and Durable Thermoelectric Power Generator Using CNT/PDMS Foam by Rapid Solvent Evaporation

Using a simple, rapid solvent evaporation process, the authors produced 3D carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foams with both high thermoelectric (TE) and good mechanical performance and used them to fabricate highly flexible and durable TE generators. The numerous pores and interfaces in the CNT/PDMS foams, which have porosities exceeding 87%, afford very low thermal conductivity of 0.13 W m^-1 K^-1 . The foam has a zT value of 6.6 × 10^-3 , which is twice as high as that of pristine CNT foam. Importantly, the CNT/PDMS foam exhibits good tensile strength of 0.78 MPa, elongation greater than 20%, and excellent resilience even at compressive strain of 80%. This foam is used to fabricate a highly flexible TE foam generator that exhibits a moderate output power of 1.9 µW generated from the large temperature gradient of 18.1 K produced by applied heat. The authors also demonstrate a practical TE foam generator that produces sustainable output power of 3.1 µW under a compressive strain of 80% and 38.2 nW under the continuous vibrational stress produced by a car engine. The TE foam generator also exhibits excellent stability and durability under cyclic bending and harsh vibrational stress.

Noncovalent Functionalization of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with a Photocleavable Polythiophene Derivative

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have received extensive research attention owing to their extraordinary optical, electrical, and mechanical properties, which make them particularly attractive for application in optoelectronic devices. However, SWCNTs are insoluble in almost all solvents. Therefore, developing methods to solubilize SWCNTs is crucial for their use in solution-based processes. In this study, we developed a photocleavable polythiophene-derivative polymer dispersant for SWCNTs. The noncovalent surface functionalization of SWCNTs with a polymer allows their dispersal in tetrahydrofuran. The resultant solution-processed polymer/SWCNT composite film undergoes a hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic change in surface properties upon light irradiation (313 nm) because hydrophilic carboxyl groups are formed upon photocleavage of the hydrophobic solubilizing units in the polymer. Furthermore, the photocleaved composite film displays a 38-fold increase in electrical conductivity. This is due to the removal of the solubilizing unit, which is electrically insulating.

Functionalized carbon nanotubes: synthesis, properties and applications in water purification, drug delivery, and material and biomedical sciences

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as one of the ideal materials due to their high surface area, high aspect ratio, and impressive material properties, such as mechanical strength, and thermal and electrical conductivity, for the manufacture of next generation composite materials. In spite of the mentioned attractive features, they tend to agglomerate due to their inherent chemical structure which limits their application. Surface modification is required to overcome the agglomeration and increase their dispersability leading to enhanced interactions of the functionalized CNTs with matrix materials/polymer matrices. Recent developments concerning reliable methods for the functionalization of carbon nanotubes offer an additional thrust towards extending their application areas. By chemical functionalization, organic functional groups are generated/attached to the surfaces as well as the tip of CNTs which opens up the possibilities for tailoring the properties of nanotubes and extending their application areas. Different research efforts have been devoted towards both covalent and non-covalent functionalization for different applications. Functionalized CNTs have been used successfully for the development of high quality nanocomposites, finding wide application as chemical and biological sensors, in optoelectronics and catalysis. Non covalently functionalized carbon nanotubes have been used as a substrate for the immobilization of a large variety of biomolecules to impart specific recognition properties for the development of miniaturized biosensors as well as designing of novel bioactive nanomaterials. Functionalized CNTs have also been demonstrated as one of the promising nanomaterials for the decontamination of water due to their high adsorption capacity and specificity for various contaminants. Specifically modified CNTs have been utilized for bone tissue engineering and as a novel and versatile drug delivery vehicle. This review article discusses in short the synthesis, properties and applications of CNTs. This includes the need for functionalization of CNTs, methods and types of functionalization, and properties of functionalized CNTs and their applications especially with respect to material and biomedical sciences, water purification, and drug delivery systems.

Graphene and carbon nanotubes interfaced electrochemical nanobiosensors for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and other respiratory viral infections: A review

Recent COVID-19 pandemic has claimed millions of lives due to lack of a rapid diagnostic tool. Global scientific community is now making joint efforts on developing rapid and accurate diagnostic tools for early detection of viral infections to preventing future outbreaks. Conventional diagnostic methods for virus detection are expensive and time consuming. There is an immediate requirement for a sensitive, reliable, rapid and easy-to-use Point-of-Care (PoC) diagnostic technology. Electrochemical biosensors have the potential to fulfill these requirements, but they are less sensitive for sensing viruses/viral infections. However, sensitivity and performance of these electrochemical platforms can be improved by integrating carbon nanostructure, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These nanostructures offer excellent electrical property, biocompatibility, chemical stability, mechanical strength and, large surface area that are most desired in developing PoC diagnostic tools for detecting viral infections with speed, sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness. This review summarizes recent advancements made toward integrating graphene/CNTs nanostructures and their surface modifications useful for developing new generation of electrochemical nanobiosensors for detecting viral infections. The review also provides prospects and considerations for extending the graphene/CNTs based electrochemical transducers into portable and wearable PoC tools that can be useful in preventing future outbreaks and pandemics.

Mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes/epoxy nanocomposites: Pre-curing, curing temperature, and cooling rate

The effects of composite fabrication, such as pre-curing, curing temperature, and cooling rate, were studied. In this work, the pre-curing was defined as heat treatment of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNCTs) with Diglycidyl Ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin. Acid purified MWCNTs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The pre-curing facilitated bonding between MWCNTs and epoxy via the oxirane ring of DGEBA, which accelerated the curing process of epoxy and increased mechanical properties. The elevated curing temperature on the pre-cured sample further improved the composite’s mechanical properties by increasing interfacial bonding due to cross-linking. The rapid cooling using liquid nitrogen during pre-curing treatment prevented re-agglomeration of MWCNTs, showing smaller agglomerates and improving the mechanical properties. Agglomeration was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, while the bonding between MWCNTs and epoxy was examined by the length of fibre pull-out on the fracture surface. Tensile testing was deployed for mechanical properties characterization. The degree of cure was determined by FTIR and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA).

A Study on the Stability of Carbon Nanoforms-Polyimidazolium Network Hybrids in the Conversion of CO2 into Cyclic Carbonates: Increase in Catalytic Activity after Reuse

Three different carbon nanoforms (CNFs), single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs, MWCNTs) and carbon nanohorns (CNHs), have been used as supports for the direct polymerization of variable amounts of a bis-vinylimidazolium salt. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that all CNFs act as templates on the growth of the polymeric network, which perfectly covers the nanocarbons forming a cylindrical (SWCNTs, MWCNTs) or spherical (CNHs) coating. The stability of these hybrid materials was investigated in the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonate under high temperature and CO2 pressure. Compared with the homopolymerized monomer, nanotube-based materials display an improved catalytic activity. Beside the low catalytic loading (0.05-0.09 mol%) and the absence of Lewis acid co-catalysts, all the materials showed high TON values (up to 1154 for epichlorohydrin with SW-1:2). Interestingly, despite the loss of part of the polymeric coating for crumbling or peeling, the activity increases upon recycling of the materials, and this behaviour was ascribed to their change in morphology, which led to materials with higher surface areas and with more accessible catalytic sites. Transmission electron microscopy analysis, along with different experiments, have been carried out in order to elucidate these findings.

Nanosensor Detection of Synthetic Auxins In Planta using Corona Phase Molecular Recognition

Synthetic auxins such as 1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) have been extensively used in plant tissue cultures and as herbicides because they are chemically more stable and potent than most endogenous auxins. A tool for rapid in planta detection of these compounds will enhance our knowledge about hormone distribution and signaling and facilitate more efficient usage of synthetic auxins in agriculture. In this work, we show the development of real-time and nondestructive in planta NAA and 2,4-D nanosensors based on the concept of corona phase molecular recognition (CoPhMoRe), to replace the current state-of-the-art sensing methods that are destructive and laborious. By designing a library of cationic polymers wrapped around single-walled carbon nanotubes with general affinity for chemical moieties displayed on auxins and its derivatives, we developed selective sensors for these synthetic auxins, with a particularly large quenching response to NAA (46%) and a turn-on response to 2,4-D (51%). The NAA and 2,4-D nanosensors are demonstrated in planta across several plant species including spinach, Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana), Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis (pak choi), and Oryza sativa (rice) grown in various media, including soil, hydroponic, and plant tissue culture media. After 5 h of 2,4-D supplementation to the hydroponic medium, 2,4-D is seen to accumulate in susceptible dicotyledon pak choi leaves, while no uptake is observed in tolerant monocotyledon rice leaves. As such, the 2,4-D nanosensor had demonstrated its capability for rapid testing of herbicide susceptibility and could help elucidate the mechanisms of 2,4-D transport and the basis for herbicide resistance in crops. The success of the CoPhMoRe technique for measuring these challenging plant hormones holds tremendous potential to advance the plant biology study.

Photoluminescent Nanoparticles for Chemical and Biological Analysis and Imaging

Research related to the development and application of luminescent nanoparticles (LNPs) for chemical and biological analysis and imaging is flourishing. Novel materials and new applications continue to be reported after two decades of research. This review provides a comprehensive and heuristic overview of this field. It is targeted to both newcomers and experts who are interested in a critical assessment of LNP materials, their properties, strengths and weaknesses, and prospective applications. Numerous LNP materials are cataloged by fundamental descriptions of their chemical identities and physical morphology, quantitative photoluminescence (PL) properties, PL mechanisms, and surface chemistry. These materials include various semiconductor quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene derivatives, carbon dots, nanodiamonds, luminescent metal nanoclusters, lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles and downshifting nanoparticles, triplet-triplet annihilation nanoparticles, persistent-luminescence nanoparticles, conjugated polymer nanoparticles and semiconducting polymer dots, multi-nanoparticle assemblies, and doped and labeled nanoparticles, including but not limited to those based on polymers and silica. As an exercise in the critical assessment of LNP properties, these materials are ranked by several application-related functional criteria. Additional sections highlight recent examples of advances in chemical and biological analysis, point-of-care diagnostics, and cellular, tissue, and in vivo imaging and theranostics. These examples are drawn from the recent literature and organized by both LNP material and the particular properties that are leveraged to an advantage. Finally, a perspective on what comes next for the field is offered.

Enhancing the reinforcing efficiency in CNT nanocomposites via the development of pyrene-based active dispersants

Various preforms of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), such as fibers, yarns, or buckypapers (BP), have been developed over the last few years in order to fabricate advanced nanocomposites containing a high volume fraction of the reinforcing phase. However, a homogeneous dispersion and an even isolation of CNTs during the fabrication process of many preforms such as BP is often challenging, while the poor interaction between CNTs and the matrix also limits the final performance of the nanocomposites. Herein, a new route to overcome these two challenges simultaneously has been demonstrated based on an active dispersant (noted as Py-PEI) developed through the quaternization reaction of pyrene derivatives (Py-Br) and polyethylenimine (PEI). The existence of pyrene groups leads to the formation of π-π stacking with CNTs, successfully hindering the re-aggregation of dispersed CNTs. Meanwhile, the amine groups of Py-PEI can establish covalent bonds with epoxy, leading to an enhanced load transfer efficiency between CNTs and epoxy in the composites. Systematic characterization of both fabricated BP and BP-reinforced nanocomposites have been performed, with significantly enhanced CNT dispersion stability in water together with improved mechanical performance of the as-obtained BP/epoxy nanocomposites. This study provides a new strategy in fabricating high performance nanocomposites with the ease of nanofiller dispersion and enhanced reinforcing efficiency.

Nanophotonic biosensors harnessing van der Waals materials

Low-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials can harness tightly confined polaritonic waves to deliver unique advantages for nanophotonic biosensing. The reduced dimensionality of vdW materials, as in the case of two-dimensional graphene, can greatly enhance plasmonic field confinement, boosting sensitivity and efficiency compared to conventional nanophotonic devices that rely on surface plasmon resonance in metallic films. Furthermore, the reduction of dielectric screening in vdW materials enables electrostatic tunability of different polariton modes, including plasmons, excitons, and phonons. One-dimensional vdW materials, particularly single-walled carbon nanotubes, possess unique form factors with confined excitons to enable single-molecule detection as well as in vivo biosensing. We discuss basic sensing principles based on vdW materials, followed by technological challenges such as surface chemistry, integration, and toxicity. Finally, we highlight progress in harnessing vdW materials to demonstrate new sensing functionalities that are difficult to perform with conventional metal/dielectric sensors.

This review presents an overview of scenarios where van der Waals (vdW) materials provide unique advantages for nanophotonic biosensing applications. The authors discuss basic sensing principles based on vdW materials, advantages of the reduced dimensionality as well as technological challenges.

The Influence of Reaction Time on Non-Covalent Functionalisation of P3HT/MWCNT Nanocomposites

Non-covalent functionalisation of the carbon nanotube (CNT) sidewall through polymer wrapping is the key strategy for improving well-dispersed CNTs without persistent alteration of their electronic properties. In this work, the effect of reaction time on regioregular poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT)-wrapped hydroxylated multi-walled CNT (MWCNT-OH) nanocomposites was investigated. Five different reaction times (24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h) were conducted at room temperature in order to clearly determine the factors that influenced the quality of wrapped MWCNT-OH. Morphological analysis using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic (FESEM) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM) analysis showed that P3HT successfully wrapped the MWCNT-OH sidewall, evidenced by the changes in the mean diameter size of the nanocomposites. Results obtained from Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) as well as Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) showed a significant effect of the wrapped polymer on the CNT sidewall as the reaction time increased. Overall, the method used during the preparation of P3HT-wrapped MWCNT-OH and the presented results significantly provided a bottom-up approach to determine the effect of different reaction times on polymer wrapping to further expand this material for novel applications, especially chemical sensors.

Pristine and Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Modified Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Supports for Lipase Immobilization

The presented study deals with the fabrication of highly stable and active nanobiocatalysts based on Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) immobilization onto pristine and poly(dimethylsiloxane) modified MWCNTs. The MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposites, containing 40 wt.% of the polymer with two molecular weights, were successfully synthesized via adsorption modification. The effect of PDMS chains length on the textural/structural properties of produced materials was studied by means of the nitrogen adsorption–desorption technique, Raman spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. P-MWCNTs and MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposites were tested as supports for lipase immobilization. Successful deposition of the enzyme onto the surface of P-MWCNTs and MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposite materials was confirmed mainly using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The immobilization efficiency, stability, and catalytic activity of the immobilized enzyme were studied, and the reusability of the produced biocatalytic systems was examined. The presented results demonstrate that the produced novel biocatalysts might be considered as promising materials for biocatalytic applications.
