Abstract
Background There has been an increase in certain cancers among young adults (YA) aged 20-39, particularly in Latin America. This is the first study to examine cancer incidence and mortality in YA in Costa Rica, focusing on sex-specific patterns. Methods Invasive cancer cases (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) in YA from 2006 to 2015 were obtained from the Costa Rican National Registry of Tumors. Utilising SEER∗Stat software, age-standardized incidence rates (IRs) and incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated. Trends and annual percent changes (APCs) in IRs were estimated using the Joinpoint regression analysis program. Cancer deaths from 2000 to 2021 were obtained from the Costa Rican National Institute of Statistics and Census. Age-standardised mortality rates were calculated using STATA®17. Findings YA comprised 10.7% of all invasive cancer cases diagnosed from 2006 to 2015. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of invasive cancer in YA was 50.9/100,000 person-years. The ASIR was twofold higher for females compared to males (IRR = 2.03, 95% CI:1.94, 2.13). This difference increased with age, peaking in the 35-39-year age group (IRR = 2.84, 95% CI:2.62, 3.10). Thyroid, breast, and cervical cancer were the most common in females. Testicular cancer was the most common in males. Leading causes of cancer-related deaths included cervical and breast cancer in females and stomach and brain/nervous system cancer in males. Interpretation The study highlights sex-specific patterns in cancer incidence and mortality among YA in Costa Rica to increase understanding and improve cancer outcomes in this age group. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cancer constitutes the primary disease spectrum contributing to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD). Adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged 15-39 have received relatively less attention regarding tumor prevention, diagnosis, and treatment compared to older adults and children. This study aimed to analyze the changes in the disease burden of hematological malignancies among the global AYA over the past three decades based on the GBD database. METHODS The changes in the disease burden of hematological malignancies were analyzed among the AYA over the past three decades based on the information from the GBD database. The future trends were predicted using the Nordpred package in R. RESULTS Our results showed that leukemia ranked first as the leading tumor burden among AYA in 2019, but the incidence rate and mortality rate of leukemia decreased year by year, with a projected age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of 1.65/100,000 for females and 2.40/100,000 for males by the year 2044. In addition, the incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has been gradually increasing in recent years, with an ASIR of 1.73/100,000 from 2020 to 2024. The results may serve as a basis for developing strategies to reduce the burden of hematological malignancies in the AYA population in different regions.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to review clinical features of adolescent malignant germ cell tumors (MGCTs) in Beijing and analyze the peculiar characteristics of this age group. Methods Clinical characteristics, pathological presentations, and survival outcomes of 34 patients were analyzed retrospectively. Results Of 34 patients, 12 girls and 22 boys, 18 (52.9%) had an extra-cranial tumor, including one testicular tumor, five ovarian tumors, one sacrococcygeal tumor, and 11 mediastinal tumors. Histologically, we found immature teratomas (n = 6), yolk sac tumors (n = 5), mixed malignant tumors (n = 5), an embryonic carcinoma (n = 1), and seminoma (n = 1). Three-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 48.8% and 62.9%, respectively. Another 16 (47.1%) patients had an intracranial tumor, including nine in the pineal region, five in the suprasellar region, one in basal ganglia, and one in cerebellopontine. All patients had localized disease and an excellent outcome with 3-year EFS and OS of 93.7% and 100%, respectively. Conclusions Adolescent MGCTs are rare with a strong dependence on gender, and the mediastina and pineal region are the most common tumor locations. The prognosis is promising compared with that of other adolescent tumors and MGCTs in other age groups. MGCTs in mediastina have a tendency to companion with other hematological malignancies, and the prognosis is extremely poor in these patients.

Resumo Objetivo: documentar a compreensão dos adolescentes sobre os principais eventos adversos relacionados à quimioterapia a partir da versão Pediátrica dos Desfechos Relatados pelo Paciente (Patient-Reported Outcomes) dos Critérios de Terminologia Comum para Eventos Adversos (Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events), e assim iniciar o processo de validação dos itens desta ferramenta com adolescentes brasileiros. Método: trata-se de um estudo prospectivo, qualitativo, de elicitação de conceitos. Participaram do estudo 17 adolescentes de 13 a 18 anos, submetidos à quimioterapia em três hospitais da cidade de São Paulo-SP, Brasil. Foram realizadas entrevistas cognitivas com perguntas baseadas em eventos adversos relacionados à quimioterapia. Os dados foram analisados quanto à responsividade e ausência de resposta. Resultados: os adolescentes puderam e estavam dispostos a fornecer informações descritivas sobre seus eventos adversos quimioterápicos, incluindo eventos físicos e emocionais. Alguns participantes sugeriram nomes alternativos para os eventos adversos e alguns usaram termos mais complexos, mas a maioria ficou satisfeita com aqueles utilizados pelos pesquisadores. Conclusão: este estudo representa os primeiros passos para entender como os adolescentes com câncer identificam, nomeiam e descrevem esses eventos por meio de entrevistas cognitivas para ajudar a criar futuros instrumentos de avaliação focados nessa faixa etária.

Abstract
Objective: to document adolescents’ understanding of chemotherapy-related core adverse events from the Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events and thus begin the validation process of this tool’s items with Brazilian adolescents. Method: this is a prospective, qualitative study of concept elicitation. The participants were 17 adolescents aged 13-18 years and undergoing chemotherapy in three hospitals in São Paulo - SP, Brazil. Cognitive interviews were conducted with questions based on chemotherapy-related adverse events. Data were analyzed for responsiveness and missingness. Results: adolescents could and were willing to provide descriptive information about their chemotherapy adverse events, including physical and emotional events. Some participants suggested alternative terms to name the adverse events and some used more complex terms, but most were satisfied with the primary terms used by the researchers. Conclusion: this study represents the first steps towards understanding how adolescent cancer patients identify, name, and describe these events by cognitive interviewing to help design future assessment instruments focused on this age group.

Se realizaron entrevistas cognitivas con preguntas basadas en eventos adversos relacionados con la quimioterapia. Los datos se analizaron en función de la presencia y ausencia de respuesta. Resultados: los adolescentes podían y estaban dispuestos a proporcionar información descriptiva sobre los efectos adversos de la quimioterapia, incluidos los físicos y emocionales. Algunos participantes sugirieron términos alternativos para denominar los eventos adversos y otros utilizaron términos más complejos, pero la mayoría se mostró satisfecha con los términos principales utilizados por los investigadores. Conclusión: este estudio representa los primeros pasos hacia la comprensión de cómo los pacientes adolescentes con cáncer identifican, nombran y describen estos eventos mediante entrevistas cognitivas para ayudar a diseñar futuros instrumentos de evaluación centrados en este grupo de edad.

Thyroid carcinoma in children, adolescents, and young adults in Brazil: A report from 11 population-based cancer registries. PLoS One 2020; 15:e0232416. Abstract
Background The increasing incidence of thyroid cancer has been described worldwide. Overdiagnosis, improved imaging, and increased environmental risk factors have contributed to the rising incidence. The objective of this study was to analyze the population incidence rate and trends during the period of 2000–2013 in children, adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Brazil. Methods Data were extracted from 11 population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) encompassing the five geographic regions of Brazil. Incidence rates per million in children (0–14) and AYAs (15–39) according to world population were analyzed according to sex, age, and type of carcinoma. Incidence trends were evaluated using joinpoint regression. Results During 2000 to 2013, we identified 11,081 children and AYAs (0–39 years) with thyroid carcinoma in 11 PBCRs, with an age-adjusted incidence rate (AAIR) of 42 cases per million. Females had a higher AAIR of 66 cases per million versus 14 cases per million in males. Age-specific incidence rate (ASR) increased with age. Geographic variation was also observed; the Midwest and Southeast regions had the highest ASR in all age groups. The lowest ASR in all age groups was seen in the North region. Papillary subtype was the most common. Overall, the incidence rates in children and AYAs significantly increased from 0.2 in 2000 to 2.8 in 2013 and from 47.1 to 115.3, respectively, with an annual average percent change of 18.8 [8.1; 30.6] for children and 7.9 [CI 5.6; 10.3] for AYAs. Conclusions Rates of thyroid cancer, particularly the papillary subtype, are steadily increasing in children and AYAs, especially among females. There are variations among geographic areas. This increased incidence is unlikely to be explained by screening, as children less than 14 years of age do not typically undergo medical surveillance. Environmental risk factors must be investigated.

Abstract
Aims The purpose of this research was to calculate and compare standardised incidence and mortality ratios in young adults, based on the data published by the population-based cancer registry of Metropolitan Lima. Method A secondary analysis was carried out on the data published by the population-based cancer registry of Metropolitan Lima in its last five volumes. Calculating the standardised incidence ratio, in accordance with the World Health Organization’s standard population, was done using the direct method, and the annual percentage change was calculated using the Joinpoint Regression Program. Results From 1990 to 2012, 12,380 new cases of cancer in young adults between the ages of 20 and 49 were reported in Metropolitan Lima. The neoplasms with the highest standardised incidence ratio in the young adult male group were testicular cancer, brain and nervous system cancer, stomach cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and bowel cancer. The neoplasms with the highest standardised mortality ratio for this group were stomach cancer, brain and nervous system cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, tracheal cancer, bronchial and lung cancer and liver cancer. The neoplasms with the highest standardised incidence ratio in the young adult female group were breast cancer, cervical cancer, thyroid cancer, ovarian cancer and brain and nervous system cancer. The neoplasms with the highest standardised mortality ratio for this group were breast cancer, cervical cancer, stomach cancer, brain and nervous system cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Conclusions Young adults represent a highly unique group, characterised by little diagnostic suspicion, distribution and aggressiveness of the neoplasms that occur in them. Assessing and reporting incidence and mortality ratios in this age group can contribute to decision making.

Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue is associated with tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. While clinical outcomes have recently improved for HPV-positive patients in general, 50% of patients suffering from tongue cancer die within 5 years of being diagnosed. Flavonoids are secondary plant metabolites with a wide range of biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Flavonoids have generated high interest as therapeutic agents owing to their low toxicity and their effects on a large variety of cancer cell types. In this literature review, we evaluate the actions of flavonoids on SCC of the tongue demonstrated in both in vivo and in vitro models.

Abstract
Cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) is expressed through a large proportion of the quality of life lost on individual level and also causes losses to the society in terms of a decreased productivity and social structure. A specific cancer spectrum and distinctive needs of AYA patients require targeted studies and cancer control measures. Incidence is intermediate between that for children and for older adults, and two-thirds of the AYA cancers affect women. Cancers of the breast and cervix uteri, representing a large portion of the burden, are amenable to prevention. Survival is relatively high, but it is lower in AYA patients with certain cancers that are common in childhood or older adulthood. Tailored cancer care with centralized multidisciplinary provision improves the outcome, as demonstrated by survival of leukemia patients. Mortality is decreasing in high-income countries for the cancers that contribute to the burden most, but lack of progress is seen for some rarer subtypes, such as brain tumors and sarcomas of the bone and soft tissue. There is unacceptable lack of information on cancer burden in low-income countries in which the outcomes for AYA patients are likely dreadful. Investment is required to establish cancer registration system and appropriate cancer care delivery in these settings.
