Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk with 24-hour urinary sodium excretion (24hUNaE) estimated from spot urine samples. DESIGN Serial cross-sectional studies were conducted, and those with multiple repeated examinations were used to assess the MetS incidence risk. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A health check-up programme was conducted between 2018 and 2021 and enrolled 59 292 participants to evaluate the relationship between MetS risk and 24hUNaE in the Third Xiangya Hospital, Changsha, China. Among these participants, 9550 had at least two physical examinations during this period, which were used to evaluate the association of a new occurrence of MetS with 24hUNaE. OUTCOMES Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidaemia in Chinese adults (revised in 2016) were used to define prevalent and incident MetS. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS was 19.3% at the first check-up; among individuals aged ≤55 years, the risk was higher in men than women, while among older individuals, a similar prevalence was observed in both sexes. A significant increase in MetS prevalence was observed per unit increase in 24hUNaE (adjusted OR (AOR) 1.11; 95% CI 1.09 to 1.13), especially for the prevalence of central obesity and elevated blood pressure. Additionally, 27.4% of the participants among the 7842 participants without MetS at the first check-up (male vs female: 37.3% vs 12.9%) were found to have a new occurrence of MetS at the second, third and/or fourth check-ups. A 25% increase in MetS incidence was observed per unit increase in 24hUNaE (95% CI 1.19 to 1.32), which was more prominent in the participants with a new occurrence of central obesity and elevated fasting blood glucose. CONCLUSIONS Although the prevalence of MetS seemed stable, new occurrences of MetS remained high, which might result in MetS recurrence. The influence of sodium intake on MetS development is probably attributed to the increase in blood pressure and central obesity, but a new occurrence of MetS may develop through elevated blood glucose and central obesity.

Abstract
Purpose To examine the relationship between diabetes and snoring frequency and determine the effect of menopause and postmenopausal years on this relationship. Methods We included 12,218 premenopausal and postmenopausal women from part of the baseline of the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort study (CMEC) in Chongqing province. Face-to-face questionnaires, physical examination, and biological samples were used to collect data. Logistic regression and subgroup analysis were used to explore the relationship between snoring and diabetes in women with various menopausal statuses. Results The risk of diabetes increased with the snoring frequency, with adjusted odds ratios of 1.23 (95% CI:1.05–1.43) and 1.47 (95% CI:1.25–1.73) for sometimes snoring and frequent snoring, compared to non-snoring. In premenopausal and postmenopausal women, frequent snoring increased the odds of diabetes by 58% (95% CI: 7–132%) and 43% (95% CI: 20–72%), respectively, compared to non-snoring. Only in women who were ≥10 years postmenopausal had a statistical association between frequent snoring and diabetes, with a 54% (95% CI: 23–92%) increased odds of diabetes, compared to women who did not snore. Conclusion Snoring frequency is positively associated with diabetes. Women who snore frequently before and for at least ten years after menopause are at higher risk of developing diabetes. Frequent snorers and long-term postmenopausal women should monitor blood glucose levels to aid in the early detection and treatment of diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to explore the effect of water-based rhythmic exercise training on fasting blood sugar (FBS), homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), insulin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and T4 in postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome. METHODS In this clinical trial, 31 postmenopausal woman with metabolic syndrome aged 69.16 ± 2.02 years were randomly assigned to an experimental (n=16) and a control group (n=15). The training program was composed of 12 weeks of water-based rhythmic exercise training performed intermittently for 60 min three times a week. Before and after training, blood was analyzed for glucose homeostasis, T4, and TSH. Data were subjected to analysis by paired t-test and covariance analysis at the p<0.05 level. RESULTS The exercise training intervention reduced the FBS and insulin significantly (p=0.000). The growth hormone (GH) index was increased significantly only in the experimental group (p=0.037) whereas no significant variations occurred in the insulin-like growth factor-1 (p=0.712). It was also found that TSH and T4 change in the experimental group as compared to the pre-test. CONCLUSIONS Water-based rhythmic exercise training may improve blood glucose homeostasis, TSH, and T4.

Abstract
Menopausal hormonal changes have been associated with the emergence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its consequences such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The common gene signature and the associated signaling pathways of MetS, T2D, CVD and menopause status have not been widely studied. We analyzed a total of 314 women aged between 35 and 75 years. The sample was divided into two groups: Group I, including women in the premenopausal period and Group II, comprising women in the post-menopausal period. The presence of MetS and its components were evaluated, as well as occurrence of T2D and CVD in both groups. We also exploited the translational bioinformatics approach to choose the common gene signatures for MetS, T2D, CVD and the menopause status. The frequency of the MetS was significantly higher in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal ones (67.1 vs. 27.2%, p < 0.001). Gene mining analysis revealed that a total of 47 genes were commonly associated with MetS, T2D, CVD and the menopausal changes. The gene enrichment analysis showed that these genes were markedly enriched in biological processes, including positive regulation of binding, positive regulation of leukocyte cell-cell adhesion, regulation of lipid localization. Furthermore, P53 signaling pathway, prolactin signaling pathway, parathyroid hormone synthesis, secretion and action were the top enriched pathways. Additionally, network analysis revealed TGFB1, SPP1, MMP2, MMP9, CCL2, IGF1, EGFR, ICAM1, TNF and IL6 as important hub genes with significant interacting partners. These hub genes identified in our study may play key role in menopausal changes and influence the risks of MetS, T2D and CVD.

Abstract
To evaluate the association between thyroid hormones (TH) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in postmenopausal women (PmW), a cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 1000 participants of PmW (40-65 years). Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) were evaluated. The MS was defined using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) ethnicity-specific definitions for Asian. Participants were classified into three groups according to the TSH reference range: high-TSH (≥4.2 mU/L), low-TSH (<0.1mU/L), and normal-TSH (0.1-4.2 mU/L) group. Serum triglycerides (TG) levels were higher in low-TSH group and high-TSH group compared with normal-TSH group (p < .05). The whole sample was stratified into <60 and ≥60 years subgroups. In the ≥60 years group, fT4 was negatively correlated with waist circumference (WC) (p = .028) and positively correlated with fasting blood glucose (FBG) (p = .043), meanwhile TSH was positively correlated with WC only in the control subjects (p = .014). No difference was found between TH and the number of MS components. It was demonstrated that serum fT4 levels were associated with FBG and WC, while TSH was associated with WC in elderly PmW without MS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of most important concerns of postmenopausal women is obesity. The relationships between menstruation status and obesity phenotypes are unclear. This study aimed to assess the associations between menstrual status and different obesity phenotypes in women. METHODS In total, 5373 women aged ≥40 years were recruited from the Jidong and Kailuan communities. Basic information was collected via clinical examination, laboratory testing and standardized questionnaires. The women were stratified into the following three groups: menstrual period, menopausal transition period and postmenopausal period. General obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of ≥28 kg/m2. Central obesity was defined as a waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) of > 0.85. Visceral obesity was defined as the presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and increased pericardial fat volume (PFV). RESULTS The numbers of women in the menstrual, menopausal transition, and postmenopausal periods were 2807 (52.2%), 675 (12.6%) and 1891 (35.2%), respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for central obesity among women in the menopausal transition and postmenopausal periods compared with women in the menstrual period were 0.99 (0.82-1.19) and 1.52 (1.26-1.84), respectively. The OR for NAFLD among postmenopausal women was 1.78 (1.44-2.20). The adjusted β-coefficient (standard error, SE) for PFV among postmenopausal women was 41.25 (7.49). The adjusted OR for general obesity among postmenopausal women was 1.01 (0.77-1.34). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that menopause is an independent risk factor for central and visceral obesity but not general obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although duration of reproductive years and time since menopause were previously implicated in the metabolic syndrome, the evidence is more limited. Few of the previous studies were able to take into account related reproductive variables simultaneously. The aim of the present study was to explore the influence of these two reproductive factors on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal parous women from Southeast China. METHODS In all, 1,536 postmenopausal parous women were recruited. Self-reported information about reproductive status, including age at menarche, age at menopause, number of children, prepregnancy body weight, and oral contraceptive use, was collected, and duration of reproductive years and time since menopause were calculated. Clinical parameters related with metabolic syndrome were also measured. RESULTS Longer duration of reproductive years was significantly related with increased presence of the metabolic syndrome (odds ratio [OR] 1.570, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.091, 2.259 for tertile 2 group; OR 1.850, 95% CI 1.163, 2.944 for tertile 3 group; P for trend = 0.010). Women with more than 20 years since menopause were more likely to experience metabolic syndrome (OR 2.422, 95% CI 1.109, 5.286, P = 0.026) and elevated blood pressure (OR 3.239, 95% CI 1.406, 7.458, P = 0.006) when compared with those with less than 10 years since menopause. CONCLUSIONS Longer duration of reproductive years and time since menopause were associated with higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal parous women from Southeast China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and the risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study among 1346 community-based women from June to October 2012 and collected the data of personal history, lifestyle, physical measures and laboratory indicators. The diagnosis of CKD was established for an eGFR of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 or albuminuria. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was based on the International Diabetes Federation Guide. According to an epidemiological survey in Guangdong province, women older than 48.9 years were classified as having a postmenopausal status. The prevalence of MS and CKD was determined in both the premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and the association between MS and CKD was analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS MS was significantly correlated with CKD in premenopausal women in both unadjusted analyses (OR=3.10, 95% CI: 1.32-7.28, P=0.009) and in analysis after adjustment for potential confounders (OR=4.09, 95% CI: 1.63- 10.32, P=0.003). When adjusted for diabetes, hypertension, and hyperuricemia, no correlation was found between MS and CKD in premenopausal women (OR=1.56, 95% CI: 0.31-7.63, P= 0.592); in the unadjusted analyses, MS was significantly correlated with CKD in postmenopausal women (P < 0.001). After further adjustment for age, education status, current smoking, physical inactivity, and current drinking, MS was still significantly correlated with CKD (OR=2.60, 95% CI: 1.69-3.99, P < 0.001). When adjusted for diabetes, hypertension, and hyperuricemia, the correlation between MS and CKD was still significant (OR=1.61, 95% CI: 1.09-2.37, P=0.018). In the unadjusted model, a high blood pressure (OR=2.77, 95%CI: 1.57-4.89, P < 0.001), an elevated serum triglyceride level (OR=1.84, 95%CI: 1.16-2.90, P=0.009) and a high fast glucose level (OR=2.07, 95%CI: 1.30-3.28, P=0.002) were all significantly correlated with CKD in postmenopausal women. After adjusting for age, current smoking, current alcohol use, education status and physical inactivity, a high blood pressure (OR=2.28, 95%CI: 1.22-4.26, P=0.01), a high serum triglyceride level (OR=1.71, 95%CI: 1.03-2.86, P=0.039) and a high fast glucose (OR=2.25, 95%CI: 1.36-3.73, P=0.002) were still significantly correlated with CKD in postmenopausal women. Blood pressure, serum triglyceride level, fast glucose, serum HDL cholesterol level and central obesity were not correlated with CKD in either the unadjusted model or adjusted model in premenopausal women (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS MS is correlated with CKD in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and the association is dependent on diabetes, hypertension, and hyperuricemia in premenopausal women but not in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Objective This study was to analyse the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Methods A total of 3227 women met the requirements from June to December in 2014, including 207 cases of premenopausal women and 3020 cases of postmenopausal women. The prevalence of T2DM and the associated risk factors in the two groups were analysed. Results The prevalence of premenopausal women with T2DM was 12.1%, while the prevalence in postmenopausal women was 19.4% (P < 0.05). Total serum protein (TP) (OR = 1.164 95% CI = 1.023–1.324) (P = 0.021) is a major risk factor for premenopausal women with T2DM. The prevalence of T2DM increased with the increase in TP. In postmenopausal groups, the prevalence of T2DM was associated with age (OR = 1.037 95% CI = 1.024–1.051) (P < 0.001), BMI (OR = 1.076 95% CI = 1.044–1.109) (P < 0.001), blood pressure (OR = 1.521 95% CI = 1.234–1.875) (P < 0.001), triglycerides (TG) (OR = 1.106 95% CI = 1.027–1.190) (P = 0.008), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (OR = 1.065 95% CI = 1.004–1.129) (P = 0.036), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (OR = 1.009 95% CI = 1.003–1.016) (P = 0.004) and TP (OR = 1.031 95% CI = 1.005–1.057) (P = 0.018). Conclusions Postmenopausal women have a higher rate of type 2 diabetes than premenopausal women. TP is a major risk factor for premenopausal women with T2DM. TP, ALT, and BUN are postmenopausal risk factors in addition to traditional risk factors such as obesity, lipidaemia and blood pressure. We should monitor risk factors and take early prevention and intervention measures to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the quality of life of postmenopausal women. Abstract
The aim of this article was to explore the link between postmenopausal status according to years since menopause (YSM) and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). This survey was conducted from January 2012 to August 2013. A total of 6022 women (3511, 58.3% were post-menopause) from Rural Northeast China were randomly selected and examined. The prevalence of the MetS was significantly higher in postmenopausal women (Post-MW) than in premenopausal women (Pre-MW) (55.0% vs. 33.1%, p .001). The risk for MetS in Post-MW increased with the number of YSM, reaching the peak level in the 5- to 9-year group (OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.23-1.96), and then decreased. The 5- to 9-year group had the highest risk of high glucose (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.20-1.83) and high triglycerides (adjusted OR, 1.92; 95% CI, 1.53-2.41) whereas the risk for abdominal obesity, high BP, and low HDL-C was not significantly associated with the number of YSM. These findings suggested that, in China, Post-MW with 5-9 YSMs had the highest risk of MetS. YSM can be a useful screening tool to identify women at high risk for MetS.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by a cluster of key features, which include abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of elevated glucocorticoid levels on the development of MetS in middle-aged female rhesus monkeys (Macaca Mulatta) after ovariectomy. Six female ovariectomized rhesus monkeys (9-13years) were randomly assigned to either a control group (normal diet, n=3) or a group in which MetS was facilitated (n=3). The MetS group fed with HFD (15% fat) and received oral prednisone acetate treatment (50mg/day). After 24months, the GCs treatment was withdrawn with continuation of high-fat feeding for a further 12months. After 24months, the MetS group displayed a significant increase in body weight and abdominal circumference. Additionally, the MetS animals displayed abnormal serum lipids, insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance. Histology of liver biopsies indicated marked accumulation of lipid droplets in hepatocytes of MetS animals. Withdrawal of GCs treatment led to recovery from above-mentioned metabolic disorders. Whereas GCs treatment increased leptin expression, it lowered expression of adiponectin and other factors in adipose tissue. Expression of Hydroxy-steroid dehydrogenase-1 and glucose transporter type-4 in the livers of MetS animals were reduced. We conclude that in the context of high fat diet, high levels of exogenous GCs contribute to the development of MetS in non-human primates.

Abstract
The association of female reproductive factors (FRFs) with cardiovascular risk factors among different population was variable and inconsistent. The objective of this study was to examine the association between FRFs and hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and long heart-rate-corrected QT interval (LQTc) in Chinese post-menopausal women (Post-MW). A total of 8046 Post-MW from the China Chaoshan Biobank Cohort Study were included for analysis. Logistic regression and general linear regression models were used to estimate the association between FRFs and hypertension, DM, and LQTc. Compared with women with 0 or 1 live birth, increasing risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR], 1.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16-1.96), DM (OR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.22-2.22), and LQTc (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.01-2.09) were observed in women who had five or more live births. Further analysis demonstrated that the association between parity and hypertension, DM, and LQTc was mediated by lifestyle and dyslipidemia. Women with more live births had increased body mass index and waist circumstance, and were inclined to consume more salty food, animal fat, and alcohol, but less meat, vegetable, fish, plant oil, and tea, compared with that had fewer live births (all P < 0.05).

Abstract
AIMS Hormonal milieu has long been known to play an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aims of this study are to investigate the roles of menstrual and reproductive factors in relation to T2D risk in an occupational cohort of Chinese women; and to explore the role of endogenous estrogen in T2D development. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 16114 women (11051 premenopausal and 5063 postmenopausal) aged ≥20years who participated in the ongoing prospective occupational cohort study. Multivariable logistic regressions were modeled to evaluate the associations of reproductive factors with T2D risk. RESULTS Early menarche at age (≤12 versus 15-16 years) was associated with increased T2D risk (odds ratio [OR]: 1.60, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-2.22). After multiple adjustment including age, BMI and occupation, postmenopausal status was positively associated with T2D risk (OR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.10-2.14). Reproductive life span was significantly associated with T2D risk (P=0.02), albeit displaying a U-shape relationship. Similarly, age at menopause was also associated with T2D risk in the same U-shaped as with reproductive life span (P=0.03). Further, years since menopause (P=0.003), but not history of cycle regularity and hormone use, was associated with increased T2D risk. CONCLUSION Reproductive factors were associated with T2D supporting the notion that either a short or prolonged exposure to endogenous estrogen affects T2D risk in Chinese women. Reproductive factors should be added to risk stratification when counseling women about their risk of developing diabetes.
