Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is growing recognition of the consequences of a person's health and illness experience for the health and wider welfare of those close to them. However, estimation of these health spillovers is challenging. This study adopts a longitudinal approach to examine maternal mental health spillovers associated with various forms of child illness and disability. METHODS Dynamic panel models are used in estimating maternal mental health spillovers related to 7 subcategories of chronic child illness and disability. In particular, we use longitudinal data from the Growing Up in Ireland study and a system generalized method of moments approach. We also consider heterogeneity in these spillovers by the severity of the child's illness/disability and by household deprivation. RESULTS We find that a child's experience of chronic nervous system conditions and chronic mental and behavioral disorders are associated with 10.8 and 5.1 percentage point increases in the probability of maternal depression, respectively. Similar associations were not observed for other health conditions. Spillover magnitude is also found to be strongly related to illness/disability severity. Finally, subsample analyses reveal a larger association between severe child illness and maternal depression among deprived households. CONCLUSIONS This analysis, in observing health spillovers related to certain disease categories but not others, draws further attention to their context specificity. Our findings also further corroborate calls for inclusion of caregiver and family member outcomes in the economic evaluation of child health services and support consensus guidelines for collection of these outcomes alongside patient outcomes in clinical trials.

Abstract
The systematic review aimed to systematize the empirical literature on the psychological impact of disability on the siblings of persons with disabilities, to inform research and provide clinical recommendations. Two research questions addressed the review: (1) What are the main psychological constructs investigated in siblings of persons with disability? (2) What is the main role of each psychological construct in siblings of persons with disability experience? The electronic search was conducted in 7 databases and the PRISMA diagram was used. The inclusion criteria were: Papers published in English and in peer-reviewed journals; papers published between January 2014 and June 2024; qualitative, quantitative, and mixed studies; and papers on the psychological impact of disabilities and/or chronic illnesses on the experience of siblings of persons with disabilities. The standardized Mixed Method Appraisal Tool protocol was used to appraise the methodological quality of the studies. To summarize the findings, a narrative approach was adopted. A total of 60 studies have been reviewed. According to the methodological quality appraisal of studies, most of them reported a high (n = 45) and medium (n = 15) quality. They involved 10,146 participants. Findings revealed that sibling relationships, sibling-focused parentification, and emotional/behavioral adjustment are the main psychological constructs investigated by existing literature. Few studies focused on siblings' well-being. Studies exploring more than a psychological construct were included as a hybrid. Only one study examined the siblings' psychological experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The quality of the sibling relationship ranged from good to poor; the caregiver is the main role played by siblings of persons with disabilities; anxiety, depression, and aggressive behaviors are the main emotional/behavioral symptoms revealed. Most studies (n = 39) recruited participants with brothers or sisters with mental disorders. The findings of this systematic review may play a role in the clinical field, as they might help to design gender- and age-specific intervention programs.

Abstract
Siblings of children with chronic disorders are at risk of developing mental health problems. Studies are inconclusive about whether sibling mental health is best predicted by the specific diagnoses of the child with disorder or by transdiagnostic factors. The aims of the present study were (1) to examine if specific diagnoses predicted sibling mental health, and (2) to examine if disorder severity in the child with the chronic disorder predicted sibling mental health. Baseline data from a randomized controlled trial were used. Siblings (aged 8 - 16 years) of children with chronic disorders and their parents were recruited from eight municipality and hospital clinics (N = 288). The children with chronic disorders were placed in ICD-10 diagnostic categories based on combined parent report and clinical records. Regression analyses with the most frequent primary diagnoses (ADHD, Asperger syndrome, autism, down syndrome, rare disorders) and a measure of disorder severity as predictors of sibling mental health were run. Father-reported disorder severity predicted sibling-reported internalizing problems and father-reported internalizing and externalizing problems in siblings. Mother-reported disorder severity predicted mother-reported sibling internalizing problems. No single primary diagnosis predicted sibling internalizing or externalizing problems. Disorder severity does to an extent predict sibling mental health, whereas single diagnostic categories do not. Disorder severity may be used to identify siblings at risk and/or in need of interventions. Fathers should be included in assessment and health care for siblings as their reports seem to predict sibling mental health better than the mothers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Siblings of children with disabilities or childhood-onset chronic conditions (eg, autism, cerebral palsy or congenital heart disease) often face challenges in mental health, quality of life and psychosocial adjustment. However, comprehensive knowledge of their participation in daily activities remains limited. Understanding their participation patterns and potential restrictions can help clarify their needs. AIMS AND METHODS This scoping review aims to summarise current research on the participation of siblings of children with childhood-onset chronic conditions. Following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, we systematically searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, AMED, PsycINFO and ERIC for peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2001 and 2024. Eligible studies focused on siblings of children with disabilities or early-onset chronic conditions (population) and their participation, including attendance and involvement in daily activities (concept) across children's homes, communities and schools (context). The review adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews guidelines. RESULTS A total of 62 articles met the inclusion criteria: 45 qualitative (73%) and 7 quantitative (11%) studies, 7 reviews (11%) and 3 meta-studies (5%). The studies covered various chronic conditions (eg, cancer, chronic kidney disease and Down syndrome), with autism being the most common (22 studies). Key participation themes identified include family life, home participation, school involvement, leisure activities, social interactions with peers, information-seeking and continuous meaning-making. Factors such as normalcy, advocacy, identity, gender, age, culture and socioeconomic status were found to intersect with participation. CONCLUSIONS This review provides a comprehensive overview of current research and contributes to our understanding of how participation in daily activities has been studied so far in the population of siblings of children with disabilities. It reveals a gap in research specifically measuring participation among siblings. The identified themes enhance our understanding of potential participation restrictions in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) comprises a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous diseases characterized by skin fragility and blistering. EB is incurable, and treatment consists of preventing blisters in addition to painful and time consuming skin care, often performed by the parents, in addition to monitoring other symptoms in cases of severe EB. RESULTS The purpose of this study was to explore parental experiences of caring for a child with EB. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, and analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. The sample consisted of 15 parents. Our analysis revealed three main themes: Becoming a self-taught provider of home-based skin care; Balancing roles; and Ahead of every challenge. The results indicate aspects of caring for a child with EB that may be under-recognized by healthcare professionals (HCPs) and allied caretakers. Examples of this was extensive home care, learning skin care through trial-and-error, tension between illness-demands and the child's psychological needs, and parents being gatekeepers of their child's well-being. CONCLUSIONS Caring for a child with EB may imply practical and emotionally demanding tasks for the parents, and possible unmet healthcare needs. It is important that HCPs recognize and understand the potential burden of extensive home care these parents experience as part of providing for their child with EB and the family.

Abstract
PURPOSE While the impact of paediatric cochlear implantation on parents and siblings are recognised, limited evidence exists regarding the effect of paediatric cochlear implantation on the entire family life (e.g., routine interactions, family activities). This study aimed to describe the impact of paediatric cochlear implantation on family life as perceived by parents, using concept mapping. MATERIALS AND METHODS Parents of paediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients (n = 29) participated in this concept mapping study to generate, group, and rate statements regarding the impact of paediatric cochlear implantation on family life. RESULTS In total, 99 unique statements described the impact of paediatric cochlear implantation on family life. The concept map revealed six concepts, namely (i) Financial Outlay and Supports; (ii) Education and Therapy; (iii) Responsibilities and Sacrifices; (iv) Extended Family and Community; (v) Spouses and Siblings and (vi) Achievements and Enrichments. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the multiple areas of family life affected by paediatric cochlear implantation. To improve patient-and-family-centered care, these factors must be considered during pre-operative and successive counselling of paediatric CI recipients and their families.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess parent-reported mental health in nearest age siblings of children with Dravet Syndrome (DS). METHODS In this observational study parents of 31 children (age 3-16 years; 18 males and 13 females) of nearest age siblings of children with DS completed the SDQ (Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire). Mental health level was determined using validated norms; abnormal ≥ 90 percentile/borderline ≥80 percentile. At risk status was considered borderline/abnormal. Data were analysed using descriptives and linear regression. Significance level was p < 0.05. RESULTS Only five siblings (16 %) had elevated scores on the SDQ total score. However, 32 % of siblings had difficulties on the Emotional subscale and 26 % on the Peer subscale. Only one child (3 %) had an elevated score on the Prosocial subscale which indicates strengths. Regression analysis did not find any significant associations with the SDQ total score. CONCLUSIONS Siblings of children with DS would not appear to have a higher risk of mental health problems but specific supports may be needed regarding emotional problems. More research is needed to better understand the sibling experience in children with DS and other Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathies.

Abstract
The needs of well siblings of children with chronic pediatric conditions (CPCs) are often overlooked as parents tend to direct their attention toward the child with CPC. This highlights the need to explore the experiences of these siblings to better inform the implementation of healthcare services. To consolidate the most up-to-date qualitative evidence regarding well siblings' perceptions and experiences of living with children with CPC. This qualitative systematic review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The search was conducted on eight electronic databases from their respective dates of inception to March 2024. Sandelowski and Barroso's (2007) two-step approach was used to synthesize findings. Review findings were assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation-Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research approach. In total, 23 studies (published between 2014 and 2023) were included. This review included 269 well siblings (aged between 7 and 23 years old) and 74 parents (mostly mothers). Four highly connected themes were identified: (1) A whirlpool of emotions, (2) Coping behaviors, (3) Growing up way too early, and (4) Doing and hoping for the best. CONCLUSION This review emphasizes the necessity for healthcare professionals to attend to the emotional and psychosocial needs of well siblings, and educate parents on how to better address well siblings' needs. Future research could look into the experiences of siblings of children with less common CPCs. WHAT IS KNOWN • The specific needs of well siblings of children with chronic pediatric conditions are unexplored. • Well siblings have difficulty comprehending and adapting to their sibling's chronic condition upon diagnosis. WHAT IS NEW • Interactions between family members and healthcare professionals play a crucial role in shaping how well siblings understand their siblings' chronic conditions. • Well siblings adopt various ways to help them cope with these challenging circumstances. • Well siblings are at risk for psychological distress upon learning about their sibling's chronic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthy siblings of children with life-limiting conditions often experience emotional and behavioural struggles over the course of the ill child's condition(s). Resources to support these siblings are limited due to a lack of understanding about their needs. Therefore, this study was designed to characterize the emotional and behavioural trajectories among siblings of children with progressive, life-limiting genetic, metabolic, or neurological conditions over a 12-month observation period. METHODS Seventy siblings were recruited from a large-survey based study (Charting the Territory) that examined the bio-psychosocial health outcomes of parents and siblings. Linear mixed effect models were used to assess the association between siblings' emotions and behaviour trajectories and selected demographic variables. Siblings' emotions and behaviour were measured with Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). RESULTS Siblings' mean age was 11.2 years at baseline and Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Behaviour Problems mean scores were within normal ranges across time. However, 7-25% of siblings had scores within the clinical range. Brothers had higher levels of Internalizing Problems than sisters, whereas sisters had higher levels of Externalizing Problems than brothers. When treatment was first sought for the ill child less than a year prior to study participation, siblings had higher levels of Internalizing and Externalizing Problems compared with siblings who participated more than one year after treatment was sought. CONCLUSION Healthy siblings experience emotional and behavioural problems early in the child's disease trajectory. Although these problems improve with time, our findings show that brothers and sisters experience different types of challenges. Therefore, timely support for siblings is important as they navigate through the uncertainties and challenges.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal-perinatal interventions delivered during pregnancy or childbirth have unique characteristics that impact the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of the mother, fetus, and newborn child. However, maternal-perinatal cost-utility analyses (CUAs) often only consider either maternal or child health outcomes. Challenges include, but are not limited to, measuring fetal, newborn, and infant health outcomes, and assessing their impact on maternal HRQoL. It is also important to recognize the impact of maternal-perinatal health on family members' HRQoL (i.e., family spillover effects) and to incorporate these effects in maternal-perinatal CUAs. OBJECTIVE The aim was to systematically review the methods used to include health outcomes of pregnant women, fetuses, and children and to incorporate family spillover effects in maternal-perinatal CUAs. METHODS A literature search was conducted in Medline, Embase, EconLit, Cochrane Collection, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA), and the Pediatric Economic Database Evaluation (PEDE) databases from inception to 2020 to identify maternal-perinatal CUAs that included health outcomes for pregnant women, fetuses, and/or children. The search was updated to December 2022 using PEDE. Data describing how the health outcomes of mothers, fetuses, and children were measured, incorporated, and reported along with the data on family spillover effects were extracted. RESULTS Out of 174 maternal-perinatal CUAs identified, 62 considered the health outcomes of pregnant women, and children. Among the 54 quality-adjusted life year (QALY)-based CUAs, 12 included fetal health outcomes, the impact of fetal loss on mothers' HRQoL, and the impact of neonatal demise on mothers' HRQoL. Four studies considered fetal health outcomes and the effects of fetal loss on mothers' HRQoL. One study included fetal health outcomes and the impact of neonatal demise on maternal HRQoL. Furthermore, six studies considered the impact of neonatal demise on maternal HRQoL, while four included fetal health outcomes. One study included the impact of fetal loss on maternal HRQoL. The remaining 26 only included the health outcomes of pregnant women and children. Among the eight disability-adjusted life year (DALY)-based CUAs, two measured fetal health outcomes. Out of 174 studies, only one study included family spillover effects. The most common measurement approach was to measure the health outcomes of pregnant women and children separately. Various approaches were used to assess fetal losses in terms of QALYs or DALYs and their impact on HRQoL of mothers. The most common integration approach was to sum the QALYs or DALYs for pregnant women and children. Most studies reported combined QALYs and incremental QALYs, or DALYs and incremental DALYs, at the family level for pregnant women and children. CONCLUSIONS Approximately one-third of maternal-perinatal CUAs included the health outcomes of pregnant women, fetuses, and/or children. Future CUAs of maternal-perinatal interventions, conducted from a societal perspective, should aim to incorporate health outcomes for mothers, fetuses, and children when appropriate. The various approaches used within these CUAs highlight the need for standardized measurement and integration methods, potentially leading to rigorous and standardized inclusion practices, providing higher-quality evidence to better inform decision-makers about the costs and benefits of maternal-perinatal interventions. Health Technology Assessment agencies may consider providing guidance for interventions affecting future lives in future updates.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study explored challenges experienced by siblings of children with chronic disorders, as expressed by siblings in parent-child dialogues. DESIGN AND METHODS Seventy-three parent-child dialogues (M duration = 28.6 min) were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The dialogues took place within the SIBS group intervention for siblings and parents of children with chronic disorders. The siblings (aged 8 to 14 years) had brothers and sisters with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, rare disorders, cerebral palsy, or severe mental health disorders. The data are from session 5 in the SIBS intervention, in which the siblings are to express their wishes about family-related challenges (e.g., desired changes) to their parents. The parents are encouraged to listen, explore, and validate the child's perspective before discussing solutions. RESULTS Most of the family-oriented challenges the siblings expressed were related to the diagnosis of the brother or sister with a disorder. Four main themes were identified: (1) Family life (e.g., limitations in family activities); (2) The diagnosis (e.g., concerns about the future); (3) Violence; and (4) Important relationships. CONCLUSION The siblings experienced challenges and difficult emotions in interactional processes in which the diagnosis affected family life and relationships. The study adds a new dimension to the field by identifying siblings' expressed challenges based on parent-child dialogues. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Identified themes can guide how parents should meet and address siblings' needs, how health care providers inform and support parents in doing so, and emphasize the relevance of interventions targeting family-level risk and resilience factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A child's health condition affects family members' health and well-being. However, pediatric cost-utility analysis (CUA) commonly ignores these family spillover effects leading to an incomplete understanding of the cost and benefits of a child's health intervention. Methodological challenges exist in assessing, valuing, and incorporating family spillover effects. OBJECTIVE This study systematically reviews and compare methods used to include family spillover effects in pediatric CUAs. METHODS A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, EconLit, Cochrane collection, CINAHL, INAHTA, and the Pediatric Economic Database Evaluation (PEDE) database from inception to 2020 to identify pediatric CUAs that included family spillover effects. The search was updated to 2021 using PEDE. The data describing in which family members spillover effects were measured, and how family spillover effects were measured, incorporated, and reported, were extracted. Common approaches were grouped conceptually. Further, this review identified theories or theoretical frameworks used to justify approaches for integrating family spillover effects into CUA. RESULTS Of 878 pediatric CUAs identified, 35 included family spillover effects. Most pediatric CUAs considered family spillover effects on one family member. Pediatric CUAs reported eight different approaches to measure the family spillover effects. The most common method was measuring the quality-adjusted life years (QALY) loss of the caregiver(s) or parent(s) due to a child's illness or disability using an isolated approach whereby family spillover effects were quantified in individual family members separately from other health effects. Studies used four approaches to integrate family spillover effects into CUA. The most common method was to sum children's and parents/caregivers' QALYs. Only two studies used a theoretical framework for incorporation of family spillover effects. CONCLUSIONS Few pediatric CUAs included family spillover effects and the observed variation indicated no consensus among researchers on how family spillover effects should be measured and incorporated. This heterogeneity is mirrored by a lack of practical guidelines by Health Technology Assessment (HTA) agencies or a theoretical foundation for including family spillover effects in pediatric CUA. The results from this review may encourage researchers to develop a theoretical framework and HTA agencies to develop guidelines for including family spillover effects. Such guidance may lead to more rigorous and standardized methods for including family spillover effects and better-quality evidence to inform decision-makers on the cost-effectiveness of pediatric health interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Siblings of children requiring palliative care are often forgotten and overlooked, as the focus tends to be on the ill child and their parents. Limited knowledge of non-bereaved siblings' perspectives makes it challenging to provide appropriate support for them. A review of existing literature is thus needed to better understand the experiences of these siblings and to identify research gaps that may require further examination. AIM To consolidate the available qualitative evidence on the perspectives of non-bereaved healthy siblings regarding paediatric palliative care. DESIGN A qualitative systematic review using a meta-synthesis approach was conducted. DATA SOURCES Six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global) were searched from each database's inception date until October 2022. The search included qualitative and mixed-method studies that reported the perceptions and associations of siblings of patients receiving paediatric palliative care. Data were synthesised using thematic analysis. RESULTS Eleven studies were included. The overarching theme of the review would be 'A walking shadow: Living in the darkness shaped by the dying sibling', and three key themes and nine subthemes were identified from the included articles: (1) Changing family dynamics; (2) Impact on school and socialisation and (3) Psychological impact and coping. CONCLUSION Siblings demonstrated negative psychological impacts and were affected by changing family structure and relationships. However, socialisation with society, and varied coping skills such as cognitive coping and using distraction techniques, were significant for siblings to go through this journey and even led to some positive outcomes for them.

Abstract
CONTEXT Despite the proposed high burden of siblings of children and adolescents with life-limiting conditions receiving pediatric palliative care (PPC) at home, little is known about their psychosocial well-being. METHODS In this prospective, cross-sectional trial siblings of patients of a large pediatric palliative home care team were asked to answer the KINDL survey of health-related quality of life, the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) to assess problems and resources of children and adolescents as well as the LARES questionnaire, a potential tool for early screening of distress in siblings of chronically ill children. The results of the KINDL total and subdomains as well of the SDQ-subdomains were compared to recent German normative data using multiple t-tests. RESULTS In total, 44 siblings (28 female; age 7-18 years, mean 11.8 ± 3.03) of 29 families participated in this study. The subgroup which matches the age range of current normative data of 11-17 years old siblings (n = 25) reported a significant lower total quality of life as measured by KINDL in comparison to normative data. Subscale analyses revealed a significant lower physical and psychological well-being and self-esteem. Siblings of PPC patients yielded significant higher scores in the subdomain prosocial behavior compared to normative data as measured by the SDQ. CONCLUSIONS Siblings of children receiving PPC in a home care setting are at risk for a relevant impairment of their health-related quality of life. Future studies should address the potential for possible interventions specific for this population-at-risk.

Abstract
AIMS There is a paucity of data regarding the care and support provided by Norwegian school health services to siblings of children with complex care needs. Public health nurses are an integral part of these universal services, which focus on health promotion and disease prevention in primary and secondary schools. This study aimed to explore health promotion interventions by public health nurses for siblings in Norwegian schools and to identify regional differences. METHODS An online national questionnaire was distributed to Norwegian public health nurses and leaders of public health nursing services (N = 487). The questions were related to how the nurses support siblings of children with complex care needs. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. An inductive thematic analysis of free-text comments was conducted. ETHICAL APPROVAL The study was approved by the Norwegian Centre for Research Data. RESULTS The majority of public health nursing leaders (67%) reported that the services in their municipality had no system to identify siblings or to provide them with routine care. However, 26% of public health nurses reported that routine support was provided to siblings. Regional differences were identified. STUDY LIMITATIONS This study included responses from 487 PHNs from all four health regions in Norway. The study design is limited and gives a brief outline of the current situation. Further data are needed to provide in-depth knowledge. CONCLUSIONS This survey provides important knowledge for health authorities and professionals working with siblings, about inadequate support and regional differences in care provided to siblings by school health services.

Abstract
Siblings of children with long-term conditions (LTCs) can have significantly elevated mental health needs, but these are often overlooked. A pragmatic single-arm feasibility pilot assessed feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a drop-in centre in a paediatric hospital addressing mental health needs of patients with LTCs, their carers and siblings. The drop-in centre accepted self-referral and supplemented existing provision offering a suite of interventions, including signposting, diagnostic assessments and/or guided self-help. This paper reports on feasibility, acceptability and preliminary outcomes of this centre for siblings. Eighteen siblings aged 2-17 used the centre. Sixteen of their parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires at baseline and 6 months post-baseline, and ten completed parent-reported PedsQL across two time points. Preliminary effectiveness results demonstrated a decrease in mental health symptoms with large effect size (score reduction of 3.44, 95% CI [1.25, 5.63], d = 0.84) and small effect on quality of life, with scores increasing from a median of 69.91, 95% CI [53.57, 91.67], to a median of 80.44, 95% CI [67.39, 89.13], r = 0.11 for these siblings. 88% of parents were satisfied with this provision for their sibling child. This study highlights the feasibility and value of assessing siblings for emotional and behavioural difficulties and providing them with an accessible, effective and acceptable intervention.

Abstract
Background Chronic illnesses can have an unfavorable impact on the participation opportunities of children and adolescents. The German health care system offers medical rehabilitation in order to prevent negative effects, however, migrant children and adolescents make use of this option less frequently than their peers without a migrant background. A multimodal information campaign was developed to increase the use of medical rehabilitation by children and adolescents with a migrant background, and to reduce disparities in health care. Methods The process evaluation will examine the implementation of a multimodal information campaign intended to increase the use of medical rehabilitation by migrant children and adolescents. The information campaign follows a low-threshold participatory approach. In a first step, persons from different migrant communities in Berlin and Hamburg are trained to become transcultural health mediators. These mediators then share their knowledge about chronic illnesses and medical rehabilitation with other families at information events held in their native language. The transcultural mediators also support migrant families in applying for medical rehabilitation. The effectiveness of the intervention will be tested by a trend study with repeated cross-sectional surveys. For this purpose, all families in the project regions of Berlin and Hamburg whose child has received medical rehabilitation are surveyed annually in order to be able to map changes in the proportions of children and adolescents with a migrant background over the course of the project. Discussion The study protocol describes a complex intervention to increase the use of medical rehabilitation by migrant children and adolescents, and the accompanying process evaluation and trend study. The intervention is intended to contribute to reducing health inequalities in Germany. Conclusion The study described in this protocol will provide extensive data on the multimodal information campaign and can thus help organizations and institutions adapt or further develop similar measures for other regions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a mental health condition that can have far-reaching consequences for the entire family, not just for the affected individual. Siblings are particularly vulnerable in that the unremitting stress and guilt at home can affect multiple aspects of their lives, including relationships, added responsibilities, and health. This pressure may affect siblings' own emotional well-being and academic success. Most studies in this field have examined the impact of depression on the affected adolescents or their parents, whereas few have examined the impact on siblings. Sibling studies have been limited by lack of sample homogeneity, especially in the context of coping in high school. This study sought to examine the retrospective experiences of young adults who lived in the same house as a sibling with depression while they were in high school. METHODS This qualitative study examined 21 young adults (aged 18-29) who grew up with a sibling with depression. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted from May to September 2022. The interviews were recorded and transcribed and underwent thematic analysis. RESULTS Three main themes emerged from the interviews: (1) "School as a place of refuge": The perspective of participants who grew up with a sibling with depression regarding their high school experience. (2) "I wanted the adults at school to see me": Relations between research participants and the school educational staff. (3) "I was afraid people would relate to me as the sibling of a crazy person": Participants' relationships with their peers. CONCLUSIONS This study sheds light on the experiences of adolescents who grew up with a sibling with depression. The findings point to feelings of being invisible, self-nullification, avoiding sharing with others, and transparency. The participants were afraid that if their peers found out about their sibling they would also be stigmatized and alienated. The study shows that adolescents living with a sibling with depression need support at school.

Abstract
AIM Chronic conditions can influence the situation of healthy siblings of affected children. We investigated the opinion of the affected child about the situation of their healthy sibling and the sibling relationship. METHODS We performed a semi-structured interview with epilepsy or asthma patients aged 6-18 years and asked them to draw a picture: "Epilepsy/Asthma, my siblings and me." RESULTS Of the 58 children with epilepsy, 67%, and of the 40 children with asthma, 60% thought that their siblings were worried about the condition. Among other aspects, they addressed helplessness during a seizure. Of the children with epilepsy, 83% and of those with asthma, 95% assumed that their siblings were not disadvantaged because of the participant's condition. Of the patients with epilepsy, 91% and of those with asthma, 93% thought that the sibling relationship would not be different without the condition. Of the participants with epilepsy, 86% and of those with asthma, 93% drew a picture; 30% with epilepsy and 14% with asthma visualised an interaction with their siblings in context of a seizure or episode of dyspnoea. CONCLUSION According to the affected children, the condition worries their siblings but does not affect the siblings' lives or the sibling relationship.

Abstract
Siblings of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) are exposed to unique family environments and experience a range of psychosocial risk and resilience factors. Networks of self-reported risk, resilience, and neuropsychiatric variables were estimated for siblings of individuals with (n = 235) and without (n = 480) NDCs (N = 715, mean age 22.40 years, 76% female, 74% White Caucasian). The NDC group reported more depressive (g = 0.39) and anxious (g = 0.43) symptoms than controls, and 71.5% of the NDC group reported at least one neuropsychiatric diagnosis compared to 36.9% of controls. Self-reported sleep and post-traumatic stress disorders were high amongst NDC siblings. Everyday executive functioning difficulties (cognitive inflexibility, hyperactivity/impulsivity) and emotion dysregulation were the most influential transdiagnostic risk factors for poorer functioning within the NDC group network.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent research still focuses on the psychological impact on siblings and the problematic relationships in families with children with chronic illnesses. Our study evaluates the dynamics in sibling relationships in families with a child diagnosed with a chronic disease. METHODS We comparatively evaluated the degree of empathy, involvement, friendship, and rivalry in sibling relationships in two groups of families who have a child with a chronic pediatric disorder versus a chronic mental disorder. RESULTS The levels of involvement/friendship, empathy/care/concern, and education/learning were significantly higher in the pediatric group. Where there were siblings under the age of 10, rivalry scores tended to be higher in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Coping strategies, emphatic interactions, and implications in common activities are difficult to identify in the relationship between siblings when one of them has a chronic mental disorder. All of these negative aspects entail poor quality sibling relationships and draw alarm signals regarding the need for monitoring and intervention familial programs.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of the psychometric properties of the Sibling Perception Questionnaire (SPQ) in children with a sibling with a chronic illness. Full-text journal articles were located in APA PsycInfo and PubMed databases and by searching the reference lists of studies. Studies included reported on the psychometric properties of at least one domain of the SPQ in children under 18 years who had a sibling with a chronic health condition. Twenty-three studies met inclusion criteria. The quality of the evidence was assessed with the COSMIN Risk of Bias Checklist. None of the included studies reported on all 10 properties recommended by COSMIN and there was extensive variability in the quality of methods used to assess the psychometric properties of the SPQ across studies. The negative adjustment scale demonstrated the strongest internal consistency reliability across the studies included in the review. Eight studies assessed convergent validity, with all but one demonstrating the SPQ total score to be adequately correlated with like constructs. The studies included in the review provided preliminary support for the responsive of the SPQ in detecting clinically significant changes due to an intervention. Taken as a whole, findings from this review provide preliminary evidence for the SPQ as a reliable, valid, and responsive measure in children who have a chronically ill sibling. Future studies with stronger methodological quality and that assess test re-test reliability, known groups validity, and the factor structure of the SPQ are needed. Abstract
Siblings of persons with neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) have increased risk of poorer psychosocial functioning. This systematic review evaluated quantitative and qualitative evidence on sibling mental health and wellbeing outcomes following psychosocial interventions and the risk and protective factors associated with post-intervention outcomes. From 2025 identified studies published from 1991 to 2022 across ten databases, 24 studies were included. The largest immediate post-intervention improvements were in self-esteem, social wellbeing and knowledge of NDCs. The most sustained improvements in intervention groups at follow-up periods were in emotional and behavioural adjustment and NDC knowledge. There were positive, but small, differences in favour of the intervention groups on knowledge of NDCs, self-esteem, coping and the sibling relationship as compared to waitlist control groups. Psychosocial interventions for siblings are heterogeneous, and more data, including consideration of unique family circumstances, are needed to improve reporting and replicability, to measure effectiveness and tailor necessary supports.

Abstract
Siblings of children with chronic disorders are at increased risk of mental health problems. Predictors of siblings' mental health require further study to identify children in need of interventions and to design effective intervention programs. Siblings of children with chronic disorders (n = 107; M age = 11.5 years; SD = 2.1, 54.6% girls) and their parents (n = 199; 50.3% mothers) were included in a survey study. Siblings and parents completed questionnaires on mental health. Siblings completed questionnaires on parent-child communication, relationships with parents, and an adjustment measure on the sibling situation. Multiple linear regression analyses were applied to identify predictors of siblings' mental health. Sibling-reported relationship with parents was a significant predictor of sibling mental health reported by siblings, fathers, and mothers (R2 = 0.26 - R2 = 0.46). Siblings' adjustment was significantly associated with fathers' report of siblings' mental health (r = .36), but not mothers' report (r = .17). Siblings' relationships (d = 0.26) and communication (d = 0.33) with mothers were significantly better than with fathers. We conclude that the sibling-parent relationship is a significant factor in identifying siblings at risk and that family-based intervention programs should be developed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Research examining sibling caregiving contributions to medically complex pediatric patients, including those with inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), is limited. We assess caregiving roles and attributes of siblings and hypothesize that there will be differences in parent-reported contributions among siblings of children with IEMs and siblings of typically developing (TD) children. STUDY DESIGN A convergent parallel mixed-methods study design guided analysis of data from parental surveys and semistructured interviews. Interviews were conducted with parents (n = 49) of children with IEMs and parents (n = 28) of exclusively TD children. We used inductive thematic analysis to identify themes related to sibling caregiving. The caregiving and support roles for siblings (n = 55) of children with IEMs and siblings (n = 42) of TD children were coded to assess each sibling's caregiving contributions and personal attributes. RESULTS Logistic regressions, using generalized estimating equations, were fitted. Results showed that siblings of children with IEMs were significantly more likely to provide monitoring (odds ratio [OR]: 3.62, confidence interval [CI]: 1.30-10.07) and emotional/social support (OR: 4.02, CI: 1.67-9.67) than siblings of TD children. Themes arising from interviews with parents of children with IEMs focused on sibling attributes, parental expectations regarding sibling caregiving, and challenges to the sibling-sibling and parent-sibling relationships. Themes revealed nuances in the sibling caregiving experience. CONCLUSION Siblings of children with IEMs make meaningful caregiving contributions and may provide care differently than siblings of TD children. Understanding childhood caregiving roles may inform how health care providers and parents encourage sibling caregiving contributions into adulthood.

Abstract
Medical settings can be frightening and stressful places for pediatric patients and their families. During the COVID-19 pandemic fear and anxiety associated with receiving medical care increased as medical facilities dramatically altered the way they functioned in attempts to stop the spread of the virus. Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLSs) are medical professionals who provide psychosocial support for pediatric patients and their families by helping them understand and cope with medical procedures and the medical environment. In this role, CCLSs are likely to have important insights into the experiences and needs of pediatric patients and their families during COVID-19. Using a mixed-methods design, 101 CCLSs completed an online survey and 15 participated in follow-up interviews examining their experiences with and observations of children and families in medical environments during the pandemic. Participants emphasized a need to maintain a focus on child- and family-centered care for the well-being of patients and their families. While recognizing the need to socially distance to limit the spread of COVID, participants expressed concern about restrictive policies that did not balance the physical and mental health needs of patients and families. Participants also discussed the important role of child life services during the pandemic and the unique and multifaceted contributions CCLSs made to support patients, families, other medical professionals, and communities. Recommendations for supporting children and families in medical environments moving forward are discussed in light of lessons learned during the pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic physical health conditions (CPHC) of children affect the whole family. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to compare levels of internalizing, externalizing, and total problems as well as self-esteem/positive self-concept and prosocial behavior of the healthy siblings with children from families not affected by CPHC and test norms, respectively. METHODS A systematic search for literature was conducted using the electronic data bases CINAHL, PsycInfo, PubMed, PSYNDEX, and Web of Science. In total, results from 216 studies were included in random-effects meta-analyses that had been published or made available online before February 15, 2022. RESULTS Healthy siblings of children with CPHC had elevated levels of internalizing (g = .18 standard deviation units), externalizing (g = .13), and total behavior problems (g = .22), and effect sizes were found to be small to very small. While levels of self-esteem did, on average, not vary between healthy children with and without a sibling with CPHC or test norms (g = .08), higher levels of prosocial behavior were found in the healthy siblings of children with CPHC (g = .18). In addition, some moderating effects of kind of CPHC and its intrusiveness as well as mortality risk, country, sociodemographic equivalence of the compared groups, and year of publication were identified. CONCLUSIONS It is concluded that CPHC of a child can have negative as well as positive effects on psychosocial outcomes of healthy siblings. Psychosocial interventions are recommended for healthy siblings at elevated risk for psychological problems.

Abstract
Children in the United States are increasingly living with chronic illnesses. Existing literature has focused on adolescent children's experiences. The current study involved interviews with 10 families: children (ages 6-11) diagnosed with chronic illnesses and their mothers to better understand the experience of living with chronic illness. Using grounded theory, participants' responses fell into several themes: impact on family dynamics, parental advocacy, initial difficulty followed by resilience, unique stressors, and areas of social support. Overall, both mothers and children reported unique challenges related to living with childhood chronic illness, especially in terms of family dynamics, sibling relationships, and the mother-child relationship. However, almost all families also emphasized their ability to be resilient. The results have implications for medical practitioners and teachers who work with school-age children with chronic illnesses. Mothers need to feel supported and understood by professionals. Families need support to cope with stressors and strengthen couple, sibling, and parent-child relationships.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This pre-registered systematic review synthesised and evaluated the existing literature on self-reported mental health and wellbeing of siblings of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs). METHODS From 2437 identified studies published 2000-2022, 81 studies were included: 14 population- or cohort-based, 39 quantitative, 7 mixed method, and 21 qualitative outcome studies. RESULTS Seven sibling mental health (any psychiatric disorder, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, internalising and externalising difficulties) and five wellbeing indicators were identified (quality of life, emotional adjustment, social wellbeing, somatic/physical wellbeing, and resilience/growth). Overall, siblings had increased risk of any psychiatric disorder, but they also reported experiences of growth and resilience, primarily in qualitative studies. 41 risk factors and 24 resilience factors associated with these outcomes were identified; the most frequently cited risk factor was symptom severity of the NDC sibling, while the most common resilience factor was adaptive/active coping at the individual sibling level. Studies showed high methodological heterogeneity and 90 different self-report measures were used. CONCLUSIONS Sibling mental health indictors are heterogeneous and cumulative risk factors may result in poorer wellbeing. There is a need for consistent reporting of family and sibling characteristics, a strengths-based approach to assessment, and identification of protective and resilience-promoting factors.

Abstract
Sibling relationships are one of the most long-lasting and influential relationships in a human's life. Living with a child who has a life-threatening condition changes healthy siblings' experience. This scoping review summarized and mapped research examining healthy siblings' experience of living with a child with a life-threatening condition to identify knowledge gaps and provide direction for future research. Studies were identified through five electronic databases. Of the 34 included studies, 17 used qualitative methods, four gathered data longitudinally and 24 focused on children with cancer. Four broad themes of sibling experience were identified across studies: family functioning, psychological well-being, social well-being, and coping. Siblings experienced challenges and difficulties over the course of the child's illness. Future research should incorporate longitudinal designs to better understand the trajectory of siblings' experiences and focus on a wider variety of life-threatening conditions.

Abstract
Siblings of young people with chronic illness commonly undertake caring responsibilities for their affected brother/sister, which may encourage maturation, yet may also be perceived as a burden. Our study determined (1) siblings' caring responsibilities, (2) siblings' current emotional distress and psychosocial functioning, and (3) how siblings' caring responsibilities and psychosocial functioning related to familial relationships and coping strategies. Siblings completed questionnaires which contained Sibling Inventory of Behavior, Sibling Inventory of Differential Experiences, PedsQL, emotion thermometers, Brief COPE, and a checklist of caregiving responsibilities. We analyzed the data with t-tests and multi-level models. Forty-five siblings (mean age = 15.40 years, SD = 3.31 years; 60.0% female) participated. Siblings who had caring responsibilities (n = 26, 57.8%) reported lower anxiety symptoms, lower need for help, greater use of problem-focused coping, and more companionship and teaching/directiveness with their affected brother/sister than siblings without caring responsibilities. Siblings reported lower psychosocial and physical functioning when they perceived their parents provided them with less affection than their affected brother/sister. Family-based psychosocial interventions may aim to improve the sibling-parent relationship (including expressing affection) and the sibling-sibling relationship. Future interventions may also focus on increasing siblings' use of problem-focused coping strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to assess clinical mental and physical health outcomes of siblings of children with chronic health condition(s) compared with siblings of healthy children or normative data. STUDY DESIGN We searched Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, and CINAHL through August 9, 2021. We included English-language studies that reported clinically diagnosable mental or physical health outcomes among siblings of children (<18 years old) with a chronic health condition, included a comparison group, and used an experimental or observational study design. Two reviewers extracted data and independently assessed risk of bias using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. RESULTS Of 9899 screened studies, 34 were included; 28 studies reported on mental health, 3 reported on physical health, and 3 reported on mortality. Siblings of children with chronic conditions had greater depression rating scale scores than their comparison groups (standardized mean difference = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.38-0.68; P < .001 [6 studies]), whereas anxiety scores were not substantially increased (standardized mean difference = 0.21; 95% CI = -0.02 to 0.43; P = .07 [7 studies]). The effects for confirmed psychiatric diagnoses (7 studies), mortality (3 studies), or physical health outcomes (3 studies) could not be meta-analyzed given the limited number of studies and between-study heterogeneity. CONCLUSION Siblings of children with chronic health conditions may be at an increased risk of depression. Our findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to support the psychological well-being of siblings of children with chronic health conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to characterise the prevalence and/or severity of psychological distress (namely, depression and anxiety symptoms) in siblings of people with mental illness (MI) and to examine correlates of distress in siblings of people with MI. METHOD Studies comparing distress in individuals with and without a sibling with MI were eligible. Studies reporting on correlates of distress in siblings were also eligible. A search of MEDLINE Complete, PsycINFO and Embase was conducted up until 17 March 2022. RESULTS Fifteen studies comprising 2304 siblings and 2263 comparison individuals were included. Meta-analyses indicated individuals with a sibling with MI experience significantly greater depressive symptoms (Hedges's g = 0.53, 95% CI = [0.32, 0.73], siblings n = 1962, comparison individuals n = 2248) and anxiety symptoms (Hedges's g = 0.40, 95% CI = [0.19, 0.61], siblings n = 653, comparison individuals n = 533) than those without. The sibling relationship, siblings' locus of control, interpersonal functioning and their appraisal of the impacts of MI were identified as important and potentially modifiable correlates. CONCLUSION Individuals with a sibling with MI experience greater depressive and anxiety symptoms than those without and would likely benefit from support. Future studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms underlying distress in siblings.

Abstract
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines chronic diseases broadly as conditions that last over one year and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both. The diagnosis of a child with a chronic disease affects parents' mental health and functioning, included in this are the siblings of this child. The impact on a sibling of a child with chronic disease involves higher risks of anxiety, depression, feelings of worry about the brother or sister's future, and social problems.Three databases search were performed, and 16 articles were assessed in this systematic review that complies with inclusion and exclusion criteria.The siblings of those with chronic illnesses have higher reported emotional, behavioral, and social problems than those with healthy siblings. More research and studies with control groups and larger samples could contribute to a better understanding of the long-term effects of having a sibling with a chronic disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CLN3 disease is a neurodegenerative condition presenting in the first decade of life typically leading to death in the third decade. The earliest symptom is rapidly progressive visual impairment followed by intellectual and motor impairments, epilepsy and behavioural disturbances. There are limited data on how the condition affects the family system or the role of family resilience in paediatric neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight parents (five mothers and three fathers) of five children with CLN3. Interview questions focused on the experience of having a child with CLN3, its impact on the family system as well as the concept of family resilience. Data were analysed via thematic analysis. RESULTS The thematic analysis resulted in four main themes. The theme 'recurring losses' included the feeling of losing a healthy child, the child's loss of abilities and loss of relationships. The theme 'disruption to the family system' included that siblings could be 'side-lined', the potential negative impact on romantic relationships and difficulties finding time to oneself. The theme 'Society is not developed for a progressive disease' highlighted the difficulties parents faced with respect to contacts with the health and/or social insurance system. The paediatric health care system was seen as supportive, but the adult health care system was not seen as fit for the purpose. Regarding family resilience, parents felt that the disease forced them to reconsider what was important in life. Several parents described that they learned to value small moments of joy and create deep connections through involvement in family routines and rituals. CONCLUSIONS CLN3 places a very significant burden on the family system including parental feelings of loss, impact on family relationships and lack of understanding within the health/social insurance systems. The concept of family resilience may be useful in understanding the experiences of families affected by paediatric neurodegenerative conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social support is a protective factor for siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. AIMS We reviewed studies on social support received by siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS AND PROCEDURES We conducted a pre-registered systematic review (CRD42020207686), searching PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Fifteen articles were eligible for the review, 13 of which used cross-sectional designs. Two studies investigated sibling social support after an intervention. Multiple variables were negatively related to social support (e.g., sibling depression, loneliness, stress). Variables that were positively related to social support included prosocial behavior, competence (academic, social, and activity-related), problem-focused coping, and family quality of life. Potential moderators of the relationship between social support and psychosocial adjustment included the type of disorder of the affected sibling and the type of social support provider. We conclude with an overview of the reliability and validity of the seven social support measurements used across the studies. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Lower levels of social support are associated with more negative psychosocial adjustment among siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. We encourage future researchers to further investigate ways to increase social support for siblings to improve outcomes.

Abstract
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a major global health problem. Until recently, the siblings of this group did not receive much attention. This review, conducted from November 2019 to October 2020, aims to summarize knowledge about psychosocial well-being and quality of life (QoL), associated factors, and interventions for siblings of children with CHD. Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Web of Science via EBSCOhost, and CENTRAL. Twelve articles were included. Results showed that psychosocial well-being was impaired in 14% to 40% of siblings. Negative impact of illness was highest for CHD siblings compared to siblings of children with cancer, cystic fibrosis, or diabetes. QoL was impaired in up to one-third. Siblings of children with CHD and cancer rated their QoL lower than those of siblings of children with cystic fibrosis or type-1 diabetes. Associated factors were sibling age, gender, socioeconomic status, miscarriage, previous sibling death, visibility of illness, and severity of condition. Only one of two interventions focused on siblings of CHD children. Although data are scarce and inhomogeneous, it indicates that siblings of CHD children suffer from lower psychosocial well-being and QoL than siblings of children with other chronic conditions. Interventions to improve their situation should be developed.

Abstract
Caregivers and siblings of youth with mental illness often experience role-related psychological challenges, and it is important to focus on the needs of these family members. Existing literature demonstrates that caregivers and affected children benefit from participation in peer support and family-centered programs. This paper describes the Sibling Support Program: A Family-Centered Mental Health Initiative (SSP), a novel intervention for families of youth with mental illness. The SSP distinguishes itself from existing family-centered programs in that it utilizes a unique combination of peer support, parent mentor guidance, and clinician-led group therapy. The paper details the structure of the treatment model and presents preliminary data from participant surveys. Results show preliminary indications that the program provides both emotional and practical benefits. Along with high satisfaction ratings, family members report decreased feelings of isolation, gains in knowledge, and more positive thinking after program participation. Caregivers report that the SSP helped improve their understanding about the impact of a child’s mental illness on family members, and that they learned about effective family management strategies and access to resources. Siblings report learning coping strategies and feeling better after meeting peers with shared experiences.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to assess the emotional and behavioural functioning of siblings of children treated with long term non-invasive ventilation (NIV). METHODS Parents of children treated with NIV completed the Child Behaviour Checklist and a qualitative questionnaire for each sibling, aged 1.5-18 years old. RESULTS The parents of 49 ventilated children were questioned about 79 siblings. For the siblings aged 1.5-5, mean total T score was 57 ± 22 (range 28-92), and five siblings (31%) were in the clinical range. For the siblings aged 6-18, mean total T score was 49 ± 12 (range 26-71), and six siblings (10%) were in the clinical range. Siblings felt responsible for their affected sibling (31%) and involved with his/her illness (52%), with 31% being worried about him/her. A change in behaviour was observed in 19% of the siblings since the initiation of NIV; 26% were impacted by the use of the NIV device. CONCLUSIONS The majority of siblings of children treated with NIV do not present significant emotional and behavioural problems. They feel deeply responsible for their affected sibling and involved in his/her illness and treatment, highlighting the importance to involve the siblings in the care of the affected child.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore siblings' perceptions of having a brother or sister with congenital heart disease in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN AND METHODS Siblings of children with congenital heart disease aged 8-17 years old were interviewed via video call technology between September 2020 and February 2021. We conducted reflexive thematic analysis of these interviews to generate themes. FINDINGS Interviews took place with 17 siblings, predominantly of white ethnicity n = 15 (86%). Most siblings interviewed were first born in the family n = 15 (88%), and most children with CHD were the youngest n = 15(88%). Four themes were generated; My sibling is vulnerable, what does this mean for my family, I have a responsibility to protect my brother or sister, our family time during the pandemic and adjustment and adaptations to pandemic life. CONCLUSIONS Siblings identified difficult aspects of the pandemic and these related to concerns about their brother's or sister's vulnerability, family impact, and keeping their sibling safe. They also identified adjustments they made to keep their family functioning throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the worry and uncertainty siblings experienced, they valued increased family cohesion which helped to mitigate some challenges of the restrictions imposed in the UK. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Honest and open communication is valued by siblings. It is vital to ensure siblings receive the support they need to ensure they keep up with their schooling and social commitments as pandemic related restrictions ease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The siblings of individuals with health conditions are often overlooked, despite being at risk of experiencing psychological difficulties. There is a lack of literature investigating interventions which could promote siblings' psychological wellbeing. Therapeutic recreational (TR) camps promote self-perception and self-worth, yet there are currently no UK studies qualitatively investigating siblings' experiences of TR camps. AIMS This study aims to understand siblings' lived experiences of attending TR camps, providing a greater depth of understanding of whether these camps have a positive impact on siblings' wellbeing. METHOD Due to the paucity of qualitative research regarding individuals' experiences of TR camps, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals who had attended TR sibling camps. Verbatim transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). RESULTS Analysis revealed three superordinate themes. The first, an environment that facilitates autonomous challenge, demonstrated the importance of siblings having a place where they felt autonomous in a fun, care-free environment. This encouraged participants to engage in challenges, feeling determined to overcome them. The second, an inclusive and supportive environment, highlighted the importance of connectedness. Facing challenges and reflecting on this within a supportive team, encouraged a sense of belonging. The final superordinate theme, a transformational journey, revealed that siblings gained determination and a positive outlook to facing challenges in daily life. Additionally, they gained self-acceptance and a positive self-image, becoming more confident with, and accepting of, their identity. CONCLUSIONS This study presents a novel contribution to the existing literature and highlights the importance of camp providers ensuring their TR model incorporates autonomous challenge, success and reflection. These encourage positive youth development and self-determination in young people. In addition, recommendations include implementing teams, promoting positive volunteer-camper relationships and implementing reflective sessions. Abstract
Families of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) can face challenges with regard to health and well-being. Health systems are designed to support CYSHCN but do not often consider the health and well-being of their family. Despite a growing body of literature, substantial gaps remain in our understanding of the impact of caregiving on family health and well-being and mechanisms of supporting families. In order to better understand and address these gaps, a national CYSHCN network developed a national research agenda to prioritize key areas of insufficient understanding of health and well-being for families of CYSHCN. Questions identified by the research agenda include: 1) How can family resiliency and adaptability be measured and improved? 2) How can we better assess family mental health needs and implement appropriate interventions? 3) What is the impact of family health on CYSHCN health outcomes? This paper describes a review of what is currently known regarding health for families of CYSHCN, gaps in the literature focused on the research agenda questions, and recommendations for future research. Based on the research agenda and current state of research for family health of CYSHCN, the authors recommend focusing on resiliency and adaptability as outcomes, using implementation science to address mental health concerns of family members and to further assess the impact of family health on health outcomes of CYSHCN. In addition, research should have a special focus on diverse populations of families and consider these questions in the context of different family structures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Living with a child who has a life-limiting condition (LLC) is likely to have a major impact on all family members. There is a need to have a clearer understanding of the nature and extent of this impact on parents and well-siblings. The current study aimed to investigate the psychosocial functioning of well-siblings and parents living with a child with an LLC. Further, the study aimed to assess the resilience resources of both well-siblings and parents, giving consideration to how these relate to psychosocial functioning. METHODS Participants included 48 well-siblings (6-21 years) and 42 parents of children with LLCs. Parents and well-siblings independently completed validated measures of child and adult functioning and personal resilience. Parents provided demographic information about the patient and family. RESULTS The emotional, social and school functioning of well-siblings in the current study was found to be significantly poorer than published norms (all p's < .01). Parental self-reported depression, anxiety and stress scores were also all significantly poorer than published norms (all p's < .01). There was negligible agreement between well-sibling self-reported functioning and parental proxy-report of the well-siblings functioning (all r's < .126, all p's > .464). Sibling self-reported resilience was positively correlated with each of the measures of psychosocial functioning (all r's > .318, p's < .05). Parental resilience was significantly negatively correlated with depressive symptoms (r = -.369, p < .05) and anxiety symptoms (r = -.473, p < .01) but not stress scores (r = -.074, p = .644). CONCLUSION Family members living with a child who has an LLC were found to have significantly poorer psychosocial functioning than published norms. Although one cannot infer a causal direction from the current study, greater self-reported well-sibling and parental resilience were associated with aspects of better self-reported psychosocial functioning. Future studies should assess the impact of psychosocial interventions aimed at enhancing the resilience and functioning of both well-siblings and parents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with intestinal failure (IF) on long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) require significant medical care, including high risk procedures such as accessing a central venous catheter, with the majority provided by family caregivers in the home. This study sought to understand the experiences of family caregivers of children. METHODS This was a qualitative study of family caregivers of children with IF. Participants were recruited from an intestinal rehabilitation program to participate in virtual focus groups, which were recorded and transcribed. Thematic analysis was used to capture and describe experiences. RESULTS Thirteen caregivers providing care to eleven children participated in three virtual focus groups held between May to June 2020. Data analysis revealed five primary themes: 1) Caregiving as a 24/7 commitment; 2) facing constant risk of death, 3) chronic illness creates difficult feelings and emotions; 4) effects on all aspects of family life; 5) adapting and functioning as a family. The findings of this study pair well with the biopsychosocial model highlighting the need for multifaceted assessment and supports. CONCLUSION The impact of caring for a child with IF on long-term PN is significant for caregivers and their families and has implications for all aspects of their lives. A better understanding of the impact on caregivers and their coping strategies lays the groundwork for optimization of quality of life for caregivers and their family. Abstract
Many adolescents worldwide (indirectly) grow up with a chronic disease, which may impact their functioning and wellbeing. The objective of this study is to assess whether adolescents with a (family member with a) chronic disease differ from their healthy counterparts in terms of psychosocial functioning. Data from the Dutch 2013 HBSC-survey were used, including 7168 adolescents (Meanage = 13.7, SD = 1.57, 50.5% female). Participants indicated whether they or one of their family members had a long-term (> 3 months) disease or disability (mental/physical) and were categorized into four groups based on disease presence (none, other, self, both). Psychosocial functioning was assessed in terms of life satisfaction, self-rated health, psychosomatic health, mental health problems, support, substance use, physical exercise, screen time, and school liking. Chronically diseased adolescents (n = 162) reported lower life satisfaction, self-rated and psychosomatic health, more mental health problems, lower peer support, more substance use, and less physical exercise compared to healthy peers. Chronically diseased adolescents who also had a family member with a chronic disease (n = 74) showed comparable outcomes on these life domains, although they did not differ from their healthy peers regarding peer support, substance use, and physical activity. Healthy adolescents with a chronically diseased family member (n = 737) reported significantly lower life satisfaction, self-rated and psychosomatic health, more mental health problems, and less family support compared to healthy peers who grew up in healthy families; however, they reported more positive outcomes than adolescents who had a chronic disease themselves.Conclusion: Having a (family member with a) chronic disease is associated with impaired psychosocial functioning on various life domains. Our findings aid in understanding the psychosocial associates of chronic disease and imply that caregivers should be observant of psychosocial problems among vulnerable adolescents to provide appropriate guidance. What is Known: • Adolescents who grow up with a (family member with a) chronic disease encounter numerous challenges that may be related to poorer developmental outcomes on the long term. What is New: • This study adds a comprehensive overview of the psychosocial functioning of adolescents with a (family member with a) chronic disease, as compared to healthy counterparts that grow up in a healthy family.
