Abstract
BACKGROUND Improved survival rates broadened the pediatric oncology focus to include health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This cross-sectional study aimed to examine HRQoL by treatment phase and disease risk level in pediatric patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), including those in early survivorship. PROCEDURE A subset of data from a larger prospective cohort study was analyzed. Data were collected from 73 patients (73 parent reports and 28 self-reports). Parent proxy and self-report PROMIS measures assessed HRQoL across treatment phases (early intensive, maintenance, and off treatment) and disease risk groups (standard vs high). Analyses assessed the relationship between parent proxy and patient self-reports and the differences in HRQoL among treatment phases and risk groups. RESULTS Parent proxy reports generally indicated worse fatigue, pain interference, and mobility compared with patient self-reports. Self-reports in the early intensive treatment group suggested worse depressive symptoms, fatigue, mobility, and upper extremity function compared with those in later phases. Parent proxy reports showed worse fatigue and depressive symptoms in early intensive treatment group relative to those in later phases. Patient self-reports in the maintenance group demonstrated the best peer relationships scores. Parent proxy reports in the high-risk group reported significantly higher depressive symptoms and fatigue compared with the standard-risk group. CONCLUSIONS Differences in HRQoL suggest targets for further assessment and intervention. The early treatment and immediate post-survivorship periods may represent particularly critical time points. Longitudinal studies with larger and diverse samples should further explore HRQoL trajectories in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Survivors of pediatric brain tumors (SPBT) are at risk for social deficits, fewer friendships, and poor peer relations. SPBT also experience reduced brain connectivity via microstructural disruptions to white matter from neurological insults. Research with other populations implicates white matter connectivity as a key contributor to poor social functioning. This case-controlled diffusion-weighted imaging study evaluated structural connectivity in SPBT and typically developing controls (TDC) and associations between metrics of connectivity and social functioning. METHODS Diffusion weighted-imaging results from 19 SPBT and 19 TDC were analyzed using probabilistic white matter tractography. Survivors were at least 5 years post-diagnosis and 2 years off treatment. Graph theory statistics measured group differences across several connectivity metrics, including average strength, global efficiency, assortativity, clustering coefficient, modularity, and betweenness centrality. Analyses also evaluated the effects of neurological risk on connectivity among SPBT. Correlational analyses evaluated associations between connectivity and indices of social behavior. RESULTS SPBT demonstrated reduced global connectivity compared to TDC. Several medical factors (e.g., chemotherapy, recurrence, multimodal therapy) were related to decreased connectivity across metrics of integration (e.g., average strength, global efficiency) in SPBT. Connectivity metrics were related to peer relationship quality and social challenges in the SPBT group and to social challenges in the total sample. CONCLUSIONS Microstructural white matter connectivity is diminished in SPBT and related to neurological risk and peer relationship quality. Additional neuroimaging research is needed to evaluate associations between brain connectivity metrics and social functioning in SPBT.

Abstract
CONTEXT Football sport participation has been linked to both positive and negative effects on overall health. Social support, a network that provides individuals with resources to cope effectively, may positively influence one's stress and mental health. However, little research has been conducted on adolescent football players. OBJECTIVE To examine the relationships among social support, psychological stress, and mental health in adolescent football athletes. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING High school athletes during the precompetitive and postcompetitive football season in rural Alabama. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS Black and African American adolescent athletes (N = 93) competing for a school-sponsored football team. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) After a competitive season, participants completed a battery of social support, psychological stress, and mental health symptom measures using the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Application and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System. The T-score means, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analyses were calculated. RESULTS Social support was negatively correlated with psychological stress (emotional support, r = -0.386; family relationships, r = -0.412; peer relationships, r = -0.265) and mental health (depression, r = -0.367 and r = -0.323 for emotional support and family relationships, respectively), whereas psychological stress and mental health (depression, r = 0.751; anxiety, r = 0.732) were positively correlated. In regression analyses, social support measures (ie, emotional support, family relationships, and peer relationships) were used to predict psychological stress (F = 7.094, P < .001, R2 = 0.191), depression symptoms (F = 5.323, P < .001, R2 = 0.151), and anxiety symptoms (F = 1.644, P = .190, R2 = 0.052). CONCLUSIONS In line with the stress-buffering hypothesis, social support in the form of family relationships and overall emotional support garnered through sport participation may reduce psychological stress and help to preserve the mental health of football athletes. These findings indicate that perceived social support may act as a positive resource for the coping of Black and African American adolescent athletes. Further research is warranted to understand the effects of stress and social support on the mental health of adolescents, particularly racial and ethnic minorities who are underrepresented in the athletic training literature.

Abstract
Intrapersonal perfectionism is the dispositional tendency to impose perfectionistic expectations on oneself and is considered a bidimensional construct that consists of standards perfectionism and discrepancy perfectionism. Although scholars established the links between standards perfectionism and psychological adjustment and between discrepancy perfectionism and psychopathology, the mechanisms that explain these associations remain relatively unknown. Thus, a better understanding of these mechanisms, especially in children, is warranted given their high prevalence in this developmental population and potential destructiveness on psychological well-being. The present study examined whether social skills with peers mediated the link between the dimensions of interpersonal perfectionism and psychological outcomes due to the salience of social skills acquisition in middle childhood. The study included 225 students (nfemale = 114; nmale = 111) with ages ranging from 7 to 10 years at Time 1 (T1; Mage = 8.55, SD = 1.15) and from 8 to 11 years at Time 2 (T2; Mage = 9.52, SD = 1.10). Participants provided responses on measures concerning standards perfectionism, discrepancy perfectionism, social skills, and psychological well-being at both time points. Longitudinal structural equation modeling indicated that standards perfectionism was positively associated with increases in social skills over time and psychological well-being, whereas discrepancy perfectionism was linked with decreases in social skills over time followed by psychological maladjustment. The study discusses implications for interventions and treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal depression negatively predicts aspects of the mother-child relationship and social functioning in offspring. This study evaluated interrelations between mothers' depression history and current severity with dynamic indices of positive affect socialization and indices of offspring' social outcomes. METHODS N = 66 mother-child dyads in which approximately 50 % of mothers had a history of maternal depression were recruited. Children were 6-8 years old and 47.7 % male. Dyads completed a positive interaction task, which was coded for mother and child positive affect. Mothers and children reported on peer functioning and social problems and children reported on the quality of their best friendships at 1-year follow-up. RESULTS Current level of maternal depression, but not depression history, was related to more social problems and lower best friend relationship quality. Indices of positive affect socialization were not related to history or current levels of maternal depression, or social outcomes, with the exception of maternal depression history predicting greater likelihood of mothers joining their children in expressing positive affect. Exploratory, supplementary analysis revealed that this may be due to treatment history among these mothers. LIMITATIONS Conclusions should be tempered by the small sample size, which limited the types of analyses that were conducted. CONCLUSION Results suggest that the effect of maternal depression on aspects of child social outcomes could be specific to current levels. Our data also did not support previously found associations between maternal depression and positive affect socialization. Results suggest positive implications for the effect of treatment for maternal depression for mother-child dynamics.

Abstract
Importance Limited systematic information on familial factors and perception of the benefits and harms of internet use by youths is available. Much of the current research has been hampered by small nondiverse samples and limited information on key familial and offspring characteristics. Objective To characterize parental perceptions and concerns about internet use associated with adolescent development, well-being, safety, family connectedness, and potential for problematic internet use. Design, Setting, and Participants A 20-minute, English-language survey was developed with expert stakeholders using previously validated questionnaires and was conducted online between June 17 and July 5, 2022. Participants included 1005 parents of children and adolescents aged 9 to 15 years drawn from an online digital survey platform and calibrated for representation with post hoc weightings. Main Outcomes and Measures Parent survey responses about family characteristics and internet use were used to compute Internet Addiction Test scores for parents and their offspring, Alabama Parenting Questionnaire scores, and an aggregate family connectedness score. Results The survey cohort of 1005 parents included 568 women (56.5%) and 437 men (43.5%) with a mean age (SD) of 39.5 (6.4) years. In terms of race and ethnicity, the most common categories included Black or African American (95 [9.5%]), Latinx or Hispanic (100 [10.0%]), White (602 [59.9%]), and 2 or more races or ethnicities (122 [12.1%]). Respondents endorsed parental concerns that included exposure to harmful content (646 [64.3%]) and online bullying (533 [53.0%]). Two hundred twenty-five parents (22.4%) had specific concerns about internet addiction in their adolescent offspring, and twice as many parents reported specific concerns about internet addiction than substance addiction. However, parents also indicated that internet use improved family connectedness among immediate families (468 [46.6%]) and extended families (568 [56.5%]). Internet Addiction Test scores in adolescent offspring were correlated with parent scores (β = 0.62 [SE = 0.02]; P < .001) and Alabama Parenting Questionnaire-Inconsistent Discipline scores (β = 0.23 [SE = 0.11]; P = .04). Conclusions and Relevance In this survey study of parent perceptions of internet use among adolescent offspring, parents believed the internet brought families closer yet also expressed concerns. Problematic internet use among youths was correlated with negative parenting styles and parent internet use. This research adds to the literature by suggesting that families, their communities, and industry may have common ground to collaborate on reducing the negative effects of internet use.

Abstract
CONTEXT The abrupt cessation of school and sport participation during the COVID-19 pandemic may have negative implications for adolescent mental health. OBJECTIVES To (1) compare mental, physical, and social health and behaviors during pandemic-related stay-at-home mandates with the same measures collected 1 to 2 years earlier and (2) evaluate the relationships between physical activity and sleep during the pandemic and changes in anxiety, fatigue, and peer relationships between assessment times. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING Pediatric sports medicine center. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS A total of 39 high school athletes (25 adolescent girls, 14 adolescent boys; age = 16.2 ± 0.9 years). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement System anxiety, fatigue, and peer relationships short forms and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were completed twice (initial assessment in May 2018 or 2019, follow-up assessment in May or June 2020). Frequency and duration of physical activity and frequency of interaction with other individuals (family, peers, sport coaches, etc) were self-reported at follow-up assessment for the 2 weeks before school or sport closure and the 2 weeks before questionnaire completion. RESULTS Higher levels of anxiety (5.5 ± 4.0 versus 3.6 ± 3.4 points; P = .003) and fatigue (5.4 ± 3.7 versus 2.3 ± 2.5 points; P < .001) and worse sleep quality (6.6 ± 2.9 versus 4.3 ± 2.3 points; P < .001) were observed during the pandemic compared with previous assessments. Reductions in physical activity were noted between assessments (exercise duration: 86.4 ± 41.0 versus 53.8 ± 30.0 minutes; P < .001). Sleep quality but not physical activity during the pandemic predicted changes in fatigue (P = .03, β = 0.44 [95% CI = 0.06, 0.83]) and peer relationships (P = .01, β = -0.65 [95% CI = -1.16, -0.15]) from initial to follow-up assessment. CONCLUSIONS Mental and physical health declined during stay-at-home mandates compared with assessments 1 to 2 years earlier. Physical activity behaviors and sources of social interaction underwent changes after school and sport cessation. Sleep quality may have provided some protection against declining adolescent mental health during the pandemic, although this relationship requires further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Survivors of pediatric brain tumors are at increased risk for difficulties with social competence, including poor social information processing (SIP) and peer relationships. Improved survival rates heighten the need to better understand these challenges and if they are specific to survivors of pediatric brain tumors versus survivors of other childhood cancers. METHODS Fifty-one survivors of pediatric brain tumors and 34 survivors of pediatric solid tumors completed evaluations of SIP and peer relationship quality within six months of completing treatment and one year later. Caregivers completed a measure of social skills. Linear mixed models evaluated differences between survivors of pediatric brain and solid tumors on SIP and social skills and how indices of SIP were associated with peer relationships over time. RESULTS The two groups did not differ on indices of SIP or social skills over time. A three-way interaction between measures of SIP, group, and time predicted peer relationships. Survivors of pediatric solid tumors showed a positive association between baseline social skills and theory of mind and peer relationships over time, whereas survivors of pediatric brain tumors showed an inverse association between baseline social skills and theory of mind and peer relationships over time. CONCLUSION Findings revealed unanticipated associations between baseline SIP and social skills and peer relationships over time among survivors of pediatric brain tumors. Additional research is needed to elucidate the factors most influential on peer relationships in this group to inform interventions.

Abstract
Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) measure important aspects of disease burden, however they have received limited attention in the care of patients with Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation (CDG). We evaluated the PROs and correlation between clinical disease severity scoring and reported quality of life (QoL) in a PMM2-CDG patient cohort. Twenty-five patients with diagnosis of PMM2-CDG were enrolled as part of the Frontiers in Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation Consortium (FCDGC) natural history study. Patient- Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) was completed by caregivers to assess health-related QoL. Clinical disease severity was scored by medical providers using the Nijmegen Progression CDG Rating Scale (NPCRS). The domains such as physical activity, strength impact, upper extremity, physical mobility, and a satisfaction in social roles (peer relationships) were found to be the most affected in the PMM2-CDG population compared to US general population. We found a strong correlation between NPCRS 1 (current functional ability) and three out of ten PROMIS subscales. NPCRS 2 (laboratory and organ function) and NPCRS 3 (neurological involvement) did not correlate with PROMIS. Mental health domains, such as anxiety, were positively correlated with depressive symptoms (r = 0.76, p = 0.004), fatigue (r = 0.67, p = 0.04). Surprisingly, patients with severely affected physical mobility showed low anxiety scores according to PROMIS (inverse correlation, r = -0.74, p = 0.005). Additionally, there was a positive correlation between upper extremity and physical mobility (r = 0.75, p = 002). Here, we found that PROMIS is an informative additional tool to measure CDG disease burden, which could be used as clinical trial outcome measures. The addition of PROMIS to clinical follow-up could help improve the quality of care for PMM2-CDG by facilitating a holistic approach for clinical decision-making. SYNOPSIS: We recommend PROMIS as an informative tool to measure disease burden in PMM2-CDG in addition to traditional CDG disease severity scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Psychosocial late effects among survivors of pediatric brain tumors are common. For school-aged survivors, social skills deficits and isolation present a particular challenge. Social problem-solving is a social skill that is an important determinant of social outcomes and may yield a potential target for intervention. METHODS School-aged youth (N = 65) 8-12 years of age (10.59 ± 1.36 years; 55.4% female, 86.2% white) who were 5.23 (SD = 2.44, range 2-10.9) years post-treatment for a brain tumor completed the Attributions and Coping Questionnaire, a measure of social problem-solving that uses vignettes to assess attribution of intent, subsequent emotional response, and imagined behavioral response to an interpersonal problem. Youth also completed self-reports of social functioning (PROMIS Peer Relationships, Self-Perception Profile). A caregiver completed additional measures of child social functioning (NIH Toolbox-Emotion Measures). RESULTS Survivors attributed unpleasant situations to accidental causes (neutral attribution) and responded in ways that prioritized the friendship (appeasement) or relied on adult intervention. Self-reported social functioning was higher among those who were less likely to avoid challenging social problem-solving situations. CONCLUSIONS Findings identified characteristic social problem-solving approaches among survivors, including a tendency to attribute ambiguous situations to accidental causes and to request adult assistance and/or maintain social relationships. This may indicate a possible avenue for intervention, with a focus on increasing survivors' understanding of the causes of potentially negative peer interactions and reducing their reliance on adults.

Abstract
ContextAlthough teacher violence at schools is a serious problem in Haiti, there is a lack of systematic evidence on the effectiveness of school-based interventions in reducing teacher violence in this low-income country.ObjectiveTo test the effectiveness of the preventative intervention Interaction Competencies with Children for Teachers (ICC-T) aiming to reduce teachers' use of violent disciplinary strategies and to improve their interaction competences with children in the Haitian context.Design, Setting, ParticipantsThe study is designed as a two-arm matched cluster randomized controlled trial. The sample consists of 468 teachers and 1,008 children from 36 (community and public) primary schools around Cap-Haïtien (Département du Nord) in Haiti. Data will be collected in three phases, before the intervention, and 6 and 18 months after.InterventionIn the group of intervention schools, ICC-T will be delivered as a 5-day training workshop. Workshop sessions are divided into five modules: 1) improving teacher-student interactions, 2) maltreatment prevention, 3) effective discipline strategies, 4) identifying and supporting burdened students, and 5) implementation in everyday school life.Main Outcome MeasureThe main outcome measure is teacher violence assessed in two ways: (i) teachers' self-reported use of violence, and (ii) children's self-reported experiences of violence by teachers.ConclusionsPrior evaluations of ICC-T had been conducted in sub-Saharan Africa with promising results. This study will test for the first time the effectiveness of this intervention outside the context of sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract
Background: Poor mental health affects adolescent development and is associated with health and social outcomes in later life. The current study uses cross-sectional data to explore the understudied aspects of peer relationships as a predictor of depressive symptom severity of adolescents in Germany. Method: Data from the German BELLA study were analyzed. We focused on the most recent measurement point of the BELLA study and analyzed data of 446 adolescents (aged 14-17 years). Peer relationship was measured using four items from the internationally established Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS). Depressive symptoms were assessed via seven items of the German version of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Short Depression Scale (CES-D). Hierarchical linear regression models were computed to explore the association between depressive symptoms and peer relationships. Hierarchical linear regression models served to determine the added predictive effects of each aspect of peer relationships. Result: The regression model showed that 22% of the variance of the severity of depressive symptoms could be explained by the quality of adolescents' peer relationships (F(1,444) = 125.65, p < 0.001). Peer acceptance has the most substantial unique contribution to peer relationship as a predictor of depressive symptom severity (Change in R 2 = 0.05; Change in F = 27.01, p < 0.001). The gender-specific analysis shows different trends for boys and girls. Conclusion: The quality of peer relationships is a significant predictor of adolescents' depressive symptoms severity. Improved peer acceptance, dependability, and ease of making new friends are significantly associated with reduced depression symptoms for Germany's adolescent population.

Abstract
CONTEXT Individuals treated for pediatric craniopharyngioma, a rare, grade 1 brain tumor, frequently develop hypothalamic obesity, a complication often recalcitrant to intervention. Although hypothalamic obesity is known to adversely impact quality of life, less is known about how caregivers and patients experience this condition. OBJECTIVE Our goal was to examine the approaches that families take towards weight management and the impact on social function in individuals with craniopharyngioma and obesity. Individuals with craniopharyngioma without obesity were included as a comparison. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Adult caregivers of children <18y with craniopharyngioma completed a web-based survey posted by a patient advocacy organization between February and July 2020. Questions related to the child's diagnosis, medications, lifestyle modifications, and social function along with research priorities. Descriptive statistics were generated. Linear regression was used to assess the independent effects of obesity and other covariates on social function. RESULTS Of 106 respondents, 60 (57%) reported their child had obesity at the time of survey completion. In contrast, only 6 (5.7%) had obesity prior to craniopharyngioma diagnosis. A majority (92%) of those with obesity had tried limiting calories or carbohydrates; 31% and 69% found these helpful, respectively. Thirty-eight percent had tried weight loss medications (stimulants, metformin, GLP1R-agonists, and topiramate) and 48% found at least one helpful. Both stimulant and anti-depressant use were reported more frequently with obesity. An index (T-score) reflecting social function was lower in the cohort than a population reference, 41 (SD 11) vs. 50 (SD 10), p<0.001. In a linear model, both older age and obesity were independently associated with greater social impairment. Ninety-four percent of respondents caring for a child with obesity (and 79% of all respondents) identified "improving treatments and prevention for hypothalamic obesity" as a key research priority. CONCLUSIONS Only a minority of individuals with hypothalamic obesity had trialed medication, even though many reported that lifestyle modification was inadequate. Furthermore, social function was significantly impaired overall in survivors compared to a reference cohort, and even more so in individuals with obesity. These findings highlight the opportunity to improve social functioning as an additional potential benefit of improved treatments for hypothalamic obesity.

Abstract
Mental health and well-being are of great interest in health policy and research. Longitudinal surveys are needed to provide solid population-based data. We describe the design and methods of an 11-year follow-up of the German BELLA study in children, adolescents and young adults, and we report on age- and gender-specific courses of general health and well-being, long-term health-related outcomes of mental health problems, and mental health care use. The BELLA study is the module on mental health and well-being within the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS). Standardised measures were used at each of the five measurement points of the BELLA study. In the 11-year follow-up, young people aged 7-31 years participated (n = 3492). Individual growth modelling, linear regression and descriptive analyses were conducted. Self-reported general health and well-being were both better in younger (vs. older) and in male (vs. female) participants according to the data from all five measurement points. Mental health problems in childhood and adolescence (measured at baseline) predicted impaired health outcomes at 6-year and 11-year follow-ups. Approximately one out of four children with a diagnosed mental disorder was not undergoing mental health treatment. With its 11-year follow-up, the prospective longitudinal BELLA study provides new and solid data on mental health and well-being from childhood to adulthood in Germany, and these data are important for health promotion and prevention practices. These results are consistent with previous findings. Promising future analyses are planned.

Abstract
PURPOSE To translate and cross-cultural validate the PROMIS Pediatric-25 Profile 2.0 (PROMIS-25) into traditional Chinese, and to investigate its psychometric properties in children with cancer in Hong Kong. METHODS The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy translation methodology was adopted in this study. Three panel members evaluated the semantic equivalence and content validity. The psychometric properties were tested with 103 children with cancer (10-18 years). Internal consistency and structural validity were examined by Cronbach's alpha and Rasch analysis. Convergent and divergent validity were assessed by correlating it with traditional Chinese pediatric quality of life inventory™ 4.0 domains (traditional Chinese PedsQL™ 4.0), traditional Chinese Health Questionnaire-9 (C-PHQ-9), and the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). RESULTS The semantic equivalence score and content validity index were both 100%. All domains indicated good internal consistency (α = 0.83-0.88) and unidimensionality (variance explained > 55.5% and 1st contrast eigenvalues < 2.0). All items showed good item fit (0.6-1.4). For convergent validity, the traditional Chinese PROMIS-25 domains demonstrated moderate-to-large correlations with traditional Chinese PedsQL™ 4.0 domains (r ≥ ± 0.69), C-PHQ-9 Item-4 and total score (r = 0.75-0.80), except NPRS (r = 0.44). For divergent validity, traditional Chinese PROMIS-25 had low correlations with traditional Chinese PedsQL™ 4.0 domains (r < ± 0.21), C-PHQ-9 item-4 (r = 0.3), and NPRS (r = - 0.12). The traditional Chinese PROMIS-25 fatigue domain was weakly correlated with NPRS (r = 0.39). CONCLUSION The traditional Chinese PROMIS-25 is semantically and conceptually like the original PROMIS-25 with satisfactory internal consistency, structural validity, and construct validity.

Abstract
Cumulative evidence suggests that, for children and adolescents, peer relatedness is an essential component of their overall sense of belonging, and correlates with subjective well-being and school-based well-being. However, it remains unclear what the underlying mechanism explaining these relationships is. Therefore, this study examines whether there is a reciprocal effect between school satisfaction and overall life satisfaction (Hypothesis 1), and whether the effect of peer relatedness on life satisfaction is mediated by school satisfaction (Hypothesis 2). A non-recursive model with instrumental variables was tested with econometric and structural equation modeling methodologies, using a cross-sectional sample of n = 5,619 Chilean early adolescents (49.2% girls), aged 10, 11, and 12 (46.13, 44.99, and 8.88% respectively). Results were highly consistent across methods and supported the hypotheses. First, the findings confirmed a significant reciprocal influence between school satisfaction and overall life satisfaction, with a greater impact from school to life satisfaction. Second, the effect of peer relatedness on overall life satisfaction was fully mediated by school satisfaction. The study further suggests the importance of considering reciprocal effects among domain-specific satisfaction and overall life satisfaction and illustrates the application of non-recursive models for this purpose.

Abstract
Verbal aggression victimization, such as homophobic name-calling, has been linked to heavier substance use among young people, but little longitudinal research has examined how different types of victimization may affect substance use or whether certain psychosocial factors moderate these risks. In a diverse cohort (N = 2,663), latent transition analysis was used to model heterogeneity in victimization (age 19) and substance use (age 20). Four victimization (high victimization, homophobic name-calling only, verbal sexual harassment only, and low victimization) and three substance use (poly-substance use, alcohol, and cannabis only, low all) classes were identified. The high victimization and homophobic name-calling only classes had the highest probabilities of transitioning into the poly-substance use class, and the high victimization class had the highest probability of transitioning into the alcohol and cannabis only class. The probability of transitioning into the low all substance use class was highest in the low victimization class and lowest in the high victimization class. For the high victimization class, greater depressive symptoms increased the odds, and better peer relationship quality decreased the odds, of transitioning into the poly-substance use and alcohol and cannabis only classes. For the homophobic name-calling only class, greater depressive symptoms increased the odds of transitioning into the poly-substance use class. Homophobic name-calling, alone or in combination with verbal sexual harassment, is a risk factor for escalating substance use in young adulthood, especially among victims with depressive symptoms.
