Abstract
Introduction Economic disparities in tobacco use and dependence are well-documented among adults but not adolescents. This study aims to examine economic disparities in patterns of tobacco use among a nationally representative sample of high school students in Spring 2021. Methods We analyzed data from n = 6750 US high school student via the 2021 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES). We estimated the association between experiencing homelessness and food insecurity (analyzed independently) and current (past 30-day) and daily (all 30 days) use of four tobacco products (e-cigarettes; cigarettes; cigars; smokeless). Models controlled for sex, race/ethnicity, age, and sexual identity. Results Overall, ∼1.8 % experienced homelessness and 23.7 % experienced food insecurity. Experiencing homeless was significantly associated with greater odds of current use for e-cigarette (aOR: 3.43), cigarettes (aOR: 5.58), cigars (aOR: 10.47), and smokeless tobacco (aOR: 4.41) as well as greater risk for daily use of e-cigarettes (aOR: 2.66), cigarettes (aOR: 10.94), and cigars (aOR: 5.23) but not smokeless tobacco (aOR: 2.48; 95 %CI: 0.51-12.16). Food insecurity was significantly associated with greater odds of current use of e-cigarettes (aOR: 2.00), cigarettes (aOR: 2.15), and cigars (aOR: 2.44) but not smokeless (aOR: 1.04; 95 % CI: 0.56-1.93). No association was observed between food insecurity and daily tobacco use. Conclusion Substantial economic disparities in tobacco use were observed in a nationally representative sample of high school students. Interventions should consider prioritizing economic determinants of health during adolescence, including a focus on preventing youth tobacco use as well as addressing upstream determinants of homelessness and food insecurity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Places with more tobacco retailers have higher smoking prevalence levels, but whether this is because retailers locate where people who smoke live or whether tobacco availability prompts tobacco use is unknown. In this study, we compare the role of consumer demand with that of tobacco supply in longitudinal, area-based associations of tobacco retailer density with smoking prevalence. METHODS We merged annual adult smoking prevalence estimates derived from the USA Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System data with annual county estimates of tobacco retailer density calculated from the National Establishment Time Series data for 3080 counties between 2000 and 2010. We analysed relationships between retailer density and smoking in 3080 counties, using random intercept cross-lagged panel models and employing two measures of tobacco retailer density capturing the number of likely tobacco retailers in a county divided by either the population or land area. RESULTS Both density models provided evidence of significant demand and supply effects; in the population-based model, the association of smoking prevalence in 1 year with tobacco retailer density in the next year (standardised coefficient=0.038, p<0.01) was about double the association between tobacco retailer density with subsequent smoking prevalence (0.017, p<0.01). The reverse was true in the land area-based model, where the supply effect (0.042, p<0.01) was more than 10 times stronger than the demand effect (0.003, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Policies that restrict access to retail tobacco have the potential to reduce smoking prevalence, but pairing such policies with interventions to reduce consumer demand remains important.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We quantified the linear trend in combustible tobacco smoking among adolescents in the United States from 2014 to 2020, and then compared these trends across racial and ethnic categories. We also tested the effect of e-cigarette use on these trends for all-youth and across racial and ethnic categories. AIMS AND METHODS We pooled and analyzed seven years of National Youth Tobacco Survey data for n = 124 151 middle and high school students from 2014 to 2020. Weighted logistic regression analyses calculated the annual change in combustible tobacco smoking (ie cigarettes, cigars, and hookah) from 2014 to 2020. Stratified analyses examined linear trends for non-Hispanic White (NHW), NH-Black (NHB), Hispanic/Latino, and NH-Other (NHO) youth. All-models controlled for sex, grade level, and past 30-day e-cigarette use. RESULTS Combustible tobacco smoking from 2014 to 2020 dropped by more than 50% for NHW youth, more than 40% for Latino and NHO youth, compared to just 16% among NHB youth. From 2014 to 2020, the odds of combustible tobacco smoking declined by 21.5% per year for NHWs, which was significantly greater than Hispanic/Latinos (17% per year; p = .025), NHOs (15.4% per year; p = .01), and NHBs (5.1% per year; p < .001), adjusting for sex, grade, and e-cigarette use. Trends and disparities in trends by race and ethnicity were observed independent of e-cigarette use. CONCLUSIONS Combustible tobacco smoking declined for all-youth but at significantly different rates across races and ethnicities. Notably, declines in combustible tobacco smoking are lagging among NHB youth. Interventions are critically needed to address this disparity. IMPLICATIONS A direct, evidence-based intervention to reduce combustible tobacco smoking among NHB youth is critically needed. Such tobacco control initiatives should follow the Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Framework, incorporating sustainable funding for school-based intervention, public health education, and adult cessation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the development and testing of two assessment tools designed to assess exterior (including drive-thru) and interior food and beverage marketing in restaurants with a focus on marketing to children and teens. DESIGN A scoping review on restaurant marketing to children was undertaken, followed by expert and government consultations to produce a draft assessment tool. The draft tool was mounted online and further refined into two separate tools: the Canadian Marketing Assessment Tool for Restaurants (CMAT-R) and the CMAT-Photo Coding Tool (CMAT-PCT). The tools were tested to assess inter-rater reliability using Cohen's Kappa and per cent agreement for dichotomous variables, and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) for continuous or rank-order variables. SETTING Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS Restaurants of all types were assessed using the CMAT-R (n 57), and thirty randomly selected photos were coded using the CMAT-PCT. RESULTS The CMAT-R collected data on general promotions and restaurant features, drive-thru features, the children's menu and the dollar/value menu. The CMAT-PCT collected data on advertisement features, features considered appealing to children and teens, and characters. The inter-rater reliability of the CMAT-R tool was strong (mean per cent agreement was 92·4 %, mean Cohen's κ = 0·82 for all dichotomous variables and mean ICC = 0·961 for continuous/count variables). The mean per cent agreement for the CMAT-PCT across items was 97·3 %, and mean Cohen's κ across items was 0·91, indicating very strong inter-rater reliability. CONCLUSIONS The tools assess restaurant food and beverage marketing. Both showed high inter-rater reliability and can be adapted to better suit other contexts.

Abstract
Background: The tobacco industry has historically used brand engagement - communication tactics companies use to increase customer attachment to a brand and brand loyalty - to recruit and retain consumers. Limited information is available to assess the brand engagement tactics used to promote the two most popular tobacco products in the US - cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) - across different advertising platforms (e.g., direct-to-consumer (DTC), social media). Material and methods: We acquired 520 cigarette and 5,502 e-cigarette ads that ran in the US January 2019 to December 2020 from market research firms (Kantar, Numerator), Rutger's University ad surveillance website (trinketsandtrash.org), and branded social media accounts. Ads were double-coded for eight types of brand engagement tactics: Price Promotion, Sweepstakes, Mobile App, Email/Mail List, Free Gift, Social Media engagement request, Sponsored Events, and Auto-Ship subscription program. We report presence of brand engagement tactics by product type and advertising platform. Results: Overall, 62.9% of cigarette ads and 49.9% of e-cigarette ads contained at least one brand engagement tactic. For cigarette ads, the most common tactics were Sweepstakes and Mobile App requests, which were most commonly featured in DTC ads. For e-cigarettes, the most common tactic was Price Promotion which was featured in most DTC and online e-cigarette ads. Conclusions: Brand engagement was common in this sample of cigarette and e-cigarette ads. Our findings highlight key differences in the type of brand engagement tactic used to promote each product on different advertising platforms. Results can inform continued advertising surveillance studies and regulatory efforts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Monitoring the activities and impacts of tobacco industries is vital for tobacco control. Based on tobacco industry financial statements and a nationally representative survey of Korean adolescents, we examined the association between tobacco industry commercial advertising expenses and advertising exposure among Korean adolescents. METHODS The commercial advertising expenses of three major tobacco industries in Korea (KT&G, Philip Morris Korea, and British and American Tobacco Korea) were identified in a repository (Data Analysis Retrieval and Transfer System) established by the Korean Financial Supervisory Service. The yearly advertising expenses were merged with data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2015-2018 and 2021, total N=309 190). We used logistic regression analyses to analyse the associations between tobacco industry advertising expenses and adolescent tobacco advertisement exposure. RESULTS In 2021, the total advertising expenses of the three companies exceeded US$260 million, and the proportion of Korean adolescents exposed to tobacco advertisements ranged from 65.9% to 78.7% during 2015-2018 and 2021. Higher advertising expense sizes were associated with the risk of exposure to tobacco advertisements in both girls and boys, with OR of 1.009 (95% CI (1): 1.008 to 1.010) and 1.010 (95% CI: 1.009 to 1.011), respectively. CONCLUSION Tobacco industry advertising expenses are associated with tobacco marketing exposure among adolescents. We used financial data to identify the reach of tobacco advertising among Korean adolescents. It is essential to increase tobacco industry surveillance using various data sources and to regulate tobacco advertising more strongly.

Abstract
The tobacco industry spends the vast majority of their marketing and promotional budget at retail outlets. However, few studies have used publicly available data to examine trends in the number and types of retail establishments where tobacco products are sold. Using the U.S. Economic Census for 1997, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017 (the latest year), we examined the number, type, and sales of payroll establishments selling tobacco products. Nine store types accounted for 94% - 99% of tobacco product sales between 1997 and 2017. Gas/convenience stores had the greatest market share (33% - 49% of tobacco sales). The number of warehouse clubs selling tobacco quadrupled; however, market share only increased from 9.6% to 10.3%. Supermarkets experienced the largest decrease in percent of stores selling tobacco. Pharmacy tobacco sales increased in 2012 then decreased in 2017; per store sales volume more than doubled between 1997 and 2012. Online shopping accounted for less than 1% of the market share between 1997 and 2012, but rose to 6.3% in 2017. Between 1997 and 2017, consumers shifted where they purchased tobacco products. Declining tobacco sales in supermarkets is a promising trend for consumers seeking healthy food without exposure to tobacco product marketing; however, the consistently large number of tobacco retailers, and thus widespread tobacco availability, is concerning. Consumer tobacco purchase changes over time support the case for point-of-sale policies that affect different retail types, including pharmacy bans, to reduce tobacco retailer density. Additionally, the rapid shift to online tobacco purchasing in 2017 identifies a new target for enhanced regulation and enforcement.

Abstract
Nicotine is the primary addictive component in cigarette smoke, and dopamine release induced by nicotine is considered a significant cause of persistent smoking and nicotine dependence. However, the effects of nicotine replacement therapy on smoking cessation were less effective than expected, suggesting that other non-nicotine constituents may potentiate the reinforcing effects of nicotine. Harmane is a potent, selective monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) inhibitor found in cigarette smoke, but showed no effect on nicotine self-administration in previous studies, possibly due to the surprisingly high doses used. In the present study, we found that harmane potentiated nicotine self-administration on the fixed ration schedule at the dose related to human cigarette smoking by the synergistic effects in up-regulating genes in addiction-related pathways, and the effect was reduced at doses 10 times higher or lower than the smoking-related dose. The smoking-related dose of harmane also enhanced the increase of locomotor activity induced by nicotine, accompanied by increased dopamine basal level and dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens through MAO-A inhibition. Our findings provided new evidence for the important role of non-nicotine ingredients of tobacco products in smoking addiction.
