Abstract
Background Technologies that serve as assistants are growing more popular for entertainment and aiding in daily tasks. Artificial intelligence (AI) in these technologies could also be helpful to deliver interventions that assist older adults with symptoms or self-management. Personality traits may play a role in how older adults engage with AI technologies. To ensure the best intervention delivery, we must understand older adults' engagement with and usability of AI-driven technologies. Objective This study aimed to describe how older adults engaged with routines facilitated by a conversational AI assistant. Methods A randomized pilot trial was conducted for 12-weeks in adults aged 60 years or older, self-reported living alone, and having chronic musculoskeletal pain. Participants (N=50) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 intervention groups (standard vs enhanced) to engage with routines delivered by the AI assistant Alexa (Amazon). Participants were encouraged to interact with prescribed routines twice daily (morning and evening) and as needed. Data were collected and analyzed on routine engagement characteristics and perceived usability of the AI assistant. An analysis of the participants' personality traits was conducted to describe how personality may impact engagement and usability of AI technologies as interventions. Results The participants had a mean age of 79 years, with moderate to high levels of comfort and trust in technology, and were predominately White (48/50, 96%) and women (44/50, 88%). In both intervention groups, morning routines (n=62, 74%) were initiated more frequently than evening routines (n=52, 62%; z=-2.81, P=.005). Older adult participants in the enhanced group self-reported routine usability as good (mean 74.50, SD 11.90), and those in the standard group reported lower but acceptable usability scores (mean 66.29, SD 6.94). Higher extraversion personality trait scores predicted higher rates of routine initiation throughout the whole day and morning in both groups (standard day: B=0.47, P=.004; enhanced day: B=0.44, P=.045; standard morning: B=0.50, P=.03; enhanced morning: B=0.53, P=.02). Higher agreeableness (standard: B=0.50, P=.02; enhanced B=0.46, P=.002) and higher conscientiousness (standard: B=0.33, P=.04; enhanced: B=0.38, P=.006) personality trait scores predicted better usability scores in both groups. Conclusions he prescribed interactive routines delivered by an AI assistant were feasible to use as interventions with older adults. Engagement and usability by older adults may be influenced by personality traits such as extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. While integrating AI-driven interventions into health care, it is important to consider these factors to promote positive outcomes.

Abstract
Background Chronic pain is among the most common conditions worldwide and requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Spinal cord stimulation is a possible treatment option for pain management; however, patients undergoing this intervention require close follow-up, which is not always feasible. eHealth apps offer opportunities for improved patient follow-up, although adherence to these apps tends to decrease over time, with rates dropping to approximately 60%. To improve adherence to remote follow-up, we developed a remote follow-up system consisting of a mobile app for patients, a website for health care professionals, and a remote support center. Objective Our objective was to evaluate patient adherence to remote follow-up using a system that includes a mobile app and a remote support center. Methods After review of the literature and approval of the design of the follow-up system by a multidisciplinary committee, a team of experts developed a system based on a mobile app, a website for health care professionals, and a remote support center. The system was developed in collaboration with health care professionals and uses validated scales to capture patients' clinical data at each stage of treatment (ie, pretreatment phase, trial phase, and implantation phase). Data were collected prospectively between January 2020 to August 2023, including the number of total surveys sent, surveys completed, SMS text message reminders sent, and reminder calls made. Results A total of 64 patients were included (n=40 women, 62.5%) in the study. By the end of the study, 19 (29.7%) patients remained in the pretreatment phase, 8 (12.5%) patients had completed the trial phase, and 37 (57.8%) reached the implantation phase. The mean follow-up period was 15.30 (SD 9.43) months. A total of 1574 surveys were sent, along with 488 SMS text message reminders and 53 reminder calls. The mean adherence rate decreased from 94.53% (SD 20.63%) during the pretreatment phase to 65.68% (SD 23.49%) in the implantation phase, with an overall mean adherence rate of 87.37% (SD 15.37%) for the app. ANOVA showed that adherence was significantly higher in the earlier phases of treatment (P<.001). Conclusions Our remote follow-up system, supported by a remote support center improves adherence to follow-up in later phases of treatment, although adherence decreased over time. Further studies are needed to investigate the relationship between adherence to the app and pain management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has a considerable negative impact on quality of life (QoL) and represents a significant burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Although patient education (PE) programs are advocated as an integral component of comprehensive RA management, the magnitude and sustainability of their QoL benefits remain unclear. This meta-analysis seeks to assess the efficacy of PE interventions in enhancing QoL among RA patients. METHODS A comprehensive review of studies from 1985 to 2022 was conducted, incorporating 66 publications (59 randomized controlled trials and 7 non-randomized controlled trials) with a total of 9622 participants. Studies were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria, focusing on adults diagnosed with RA who participated in PE interventions compared to conventional or no interventions. Data were analyzed using fixed-effect and random-effects models, depending on the heterogeneity among studies. Results were reported separately for the initial follow-up and for the final follow-up. FINDINGS PE interventions demonstrated a positive impact on QoL. Following the intervention, there is a significant improvement in QoL (SMD = 0·13, 95% CI: 0·08 to 0·17, I² = 43%), with the highest efficacy observed at 7-12 weeks. Modern-era publications and randomized controlled trials offer more consistent results. Subgroups with higher female representation (>85%) and combined intervention approaches show more substantial effects. In the final assessments, QoL improvements are noteworthy, especially within the 0-6 weeks post-intervention period (SMD = 0·39, 95% CI: 0·13 to 0·66, I² = 84%). Younger adults (≤50 years) benefit the most, while longer program durations (>52 weeks) exhibit significant but varied effects. INTERPRETATION This meta-analysis underscores the positive effect of PE interventions on QoL among RA patients, highlighting the importance of tailored approaches considering various contextual factors. Standardizing intervention protocols and optimizing delivery methods are recommended to enhance the sustained impact of PE programs in RA management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluate a digital health intervention using Auricular Point Acupressure (APA) for chronic musculoskeletal pain in terms of participant retention, adherence, acceptability, and satisfaction. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a global concern and there are persistent challenges in pain management. Despite the value of digital health interventions, these interventions need to be fully evaluated for feasibility. METHODS We conducted a 3-group, longitudinal, randomized controlled trial (RCT). After Institutional Review Board approval, we posted recruitment flyers in a university, healthcare clinics, and community settings. Participants were randomized into an in-person + app group (n = 8), virtual + app group (n = 7), and a wait-list, education-enhanced control group (n = 8), evaluating our outcomes using standard feasibility measures. The 4-week intervention consisted of virtual sessions, telecommunications, and our APA app, followed by a 3-month follow-up. RESULTS Data from 22 participants were subsequently analyzed (95.7%). All app participants adhered to the study protocol and used APA at the minimum recommended frequency and duration. The virtual + app group used APA more during the intervention and follow-up periods. All app participants found the intervention to be acceptable and at least 80% overall were satisfied with APA at the 3-month follow-up. There were no adverse events reported. CONCLUSIONS Our digital health intervention was found to be acceptable and sustainable; participants adhered to and were satisfied with the intervention providing support for a larger RCT. Abstract
BACKGROUND Mobile eHealth apps have been used as a complementary treatment to increase the quality of life of patients and provide new opportunities for the management of rheumatic diseases. Telemedicine, particularly in the areas of prevention, diagnostics, and therapy, has become an essential cornerstone in the care of patients with rheumatic diseases. OBJECTIVE This study aims to improve the design and technology of YogiTherapy and evaluate its usability and quality. METHODS We newly implemented the mobile eHealth app YogiTherapy with a modern design, the option to change language, and easy navigation to improve the app's usability and quality for patients. After refinement, we evaluated the app by conducting a study with 16 patients with AS (4 female and 12 male; mean age 48.1, SD 16.8 y). We assessed the usability of YogiTherapy with a task performance test (TPT) with a think-aloud protocol and the quality with the German version of the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS). RESULTS In the TPT, the participants had to solve 6 tasks that should be performed on the app. The overall task completion rate in the TPT was high (84/96, 88% completed tasks). Filtering for videos and navigating to perform an assessment test caused the largest issues during the TPT, while registering in the app and watching a yoga video were highly intuitive. Additionally, 12 (75%) of the 16 participants completed the German version of MARS. The quality of YogiTherapy was rated with an average MARS score of 3.79 (SD 0.51) from a maximum score of 5. Furthermore, results from the MARS questionnaire demonstrated a positive evaluation regarding functionality and aesthetics. CONCLUSIONS The refined and tested YogiTherapy app showed promising results among most participants. In the future, the app could serve its function as a complementary treatment for patients with AS. For this purpose, surveys with a larger number of patients should still be conducted. As a substantial advancement, we made the app free and openly available on the iOS App and Google Play stores.

Abstract
Objective: To identify and appraise mobile-based application (mAPP) interventions that have been used to support cancer control and care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: Four electronic databases were systematically searched for studies that reported primary research findings related to mAPP interventions applied in oncology settings in LMICs. A narrative synthesis was performed using the Mhealth Index and Navigation Database as an analytical framework. Results: Twenty studies reporting 18 cancer control and care mAPPs were included in this review. Among these mAPPs, ten focused on prevention, screening and early detection of cancer, five provided information to optimise supportive and palliative care, two provided support to assist treatment-shared decision-making and one covered information for follow-up and survivorship care. Conclusion: Cancer mAPP interventions are gradually gaining attention in LMICs as they provide unique resources for empowering and strengthening the role of people with cancer in their own care. To enhance cancer control, a focus on prevention and early detection is important; however, more mAPP interventions related to cancer treatment, follow-up and survivorship are also needed to enable more cost-effective cancer care.

Abstract
Introduction: Although telemedicine is widely used in the field of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), many systematic reviews have evaluated telemedicine, but we still have no clear effect on RA and no evidence summary. Our aim is to determine the effectiveness of telemedicine on different health outcomes of RA. Methods: The following sources were used: PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Embase. The publication period was from the establishment of the database to May 12, 2022. Methodological and reporting qualities were assessed using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Each intervention's evidence of effect was graded in accordance with the Grades of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation standards. The comparison of systematic reviews and the investigation of the impact of telemedicine on various outcomes were carried out through a meta-analysis of original studies. Results: Eight systematic reviews were included. The results showed that telemedicine imparted significant improvements in patients with RA in terms of disease activity, function, physical activity, self-efficacy, and knowledge. Conclusions: Telemedicine can improve the overall standard of care for patients with RA. In the future, standardized telemedicine processes should be developed to protect patients.

BACKGROUND To inform the development of an intervention, it is essential to have a well-developed theoretical understanding of how an intervention causes change, as stated in the UK Medical Research Council guidelines for developing complex interventions. Theoretical foundations are often ignored in the development of mobile health apps intended to support pain self-management for patients with cancer. OBJECTIVE This study aims to systematically set a theory- and evidence-driven design for a pain self-management app and specify the app's active features. METHODS The Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) framework, a step-by-step theoretical approach to the development of interventions, was adopted to achieve the aim of this study. This started by understanding and identifying sources of behavior that could be targeted to support better pain management. Ultimately, the application of the BCW framework guided the identification of the active contents of the app, which were characterized using the Behavior Change Technique Taxonomy version 1. RESULTS The theoretical analysis revealed that patients may have deficits in their capability, opportunity, and motivation that prevent them from performing pain self-management. The app needs to use education, persuasion, training, and enablement intervention functions because, based on the analysis, they were found the most likely to address the specified factors. Eighteen behavior change techniques were selected to describe precisely how the intervention functions can be presented to induce the desired change regarding the intervention context. In other words, they were selected to form the active contents of the app, potentially reducing barriers and serving to support patients in the self-management of pain while using the app. CONCLUSIONS This study fully reports the design and development of a pain self-management app underpinned by theory and evidence and intended for patients with cancer. It provides a model example of the BCW framework application for health app development. The work presented in this study is the first systematic theory- and evidence-driven design for a pain app for patients with cancer. This systematic approach can support clarity in evaluating the intervention's underlying mechanisms and support future replication.

Abstract
Background Mobile apps offer a potential mechanism for people with persistent pain to monitor pain levels conveniently within their own environment and for clinicians to remotely monitor their patients' pain. However, the quality of currently available apps and the usefulness of included features from a clinical perspective are not known. Objective The aim of this study was to examine the content and quality of currently available smartphone apps designed for monitoring the intensity or presence of musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain. Methods A systematic search was performed in the Australian Apple and Google Play stores. Apps were included if they were designed to monitor the intensity or presence of musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain and were available in the English language within the Australian app stores. Data pertaining to the intended use of the app and clinical population were extracted by using a custom-designed data extraction form, and app quality was assessed by using the 23-item Mobile App Rating Scale. Results Of the 2190 apps screened, 49 met the inclusion criteria. Apps were primarily designed for adult users (36/49, 73%) with nonspecific musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain conditions, arthritis, and joint pain. All apps monitored pain intensity, with almost half (23/49, 47%) also specifying pain location. Overall, the mean quality scores from the Mobile App Rating Scale ranged from 1.5 to 4.4 (out of 5.0). Between 20% (10/49) and 22% (11/49) of apps involved clinicians, consumers, or both in their development, and 20% (10/49) had published literature related to the development or use of the app in clinical scenarios. Although 71% (35/49) had data sharing features, only 5 apps enabled client-clinician communication through the app. Conclusions The overall quality of mobile apps that are currently available for monitoring pain intensity is acceptable. Presently, mobile apps for remote pain monitoring lack functionality for clinicians to view data between consults. Both users and clinicians should be aware of the limitations of these apps and make informed choices in using or recommending apps that best suit the clinical need.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Technology has substantial potential to transform and extend care for persons with chronic pain, a burdensome and costly condition. To catalyze the development of impactful applications of technology in this space, we developed the Pain Tech Landscape (PTL) model, which integrates pain care needs with characteristics of technological solutions. METHODS Our interdisciplinary group representing experts in pain and human factors research developed PTL through iterative discussions. To demonstrate one potential use of the model, we apply data generated from a narrative review of selected pain and technology journals (2000-2020) in the form of heat map overlays, to reveal where pain tech research attention has focused to date. RESULTS The PTL comprises three two-dimensional planes, with pain care needs on each x axis (measurement to management) and technology applications on the y axes according to a) user agency (user- to system-driven), b) usage time frame (temporary to lifelong), and c) collaboration (single-user to collaborative). Heat maps show that existing applications reside primarily in the "user-driven/management" quadrant (e.g., self-care apps). Examples of less developed areas include artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (i.e., Internet-linked household objects), and collaborative/social tools for pain management. CONCLUSIONS Collaborative development between the pain and tech fields in early developmental stages using the PTL as a common language could yield impactful solutions for chronic pain management. The PTL could also be used to track developments in the field over time. We encourage periodic reassessment and refinement of the PTL model, which can also be adapted to other chronic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is prevalent and poorly managed in older adults. Although pain self-management strategies are helpful, adoption and access are limited; thus, technology provides an opportunity for intervention delivery. Mobile health (mHealth) is feasible to use in older adults; however, we have yet to understand the effect of mHealth pain self-management interventions on pain outcomes in older adults. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the characteristics of mHealth interventions and their efficacy on pain outcomes in older adults with musculoskeletal pain. METHODS With the assistance of a medical librarian, keywords and subject headings were generated, including but not limited to mobile health application, mHealth, digital, pain, pain management, and older. A search was conducted for papers in journal databases, including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore, between 2000 and 2022. Papers were screened according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and reference lists were reviewed for additional paper inclusion. Three authors appraised the methodology of papers independently, then collaboratively to synthesize the evidence. RESULTS Six publications were included in the scoping review. The design and methodology ranged widely from pilot studies to a comparative effectiveness trial. Older participants in the studies reported a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Delivery of the mHealth pain self-management interventions incorporated mobile devices, such as a smartphone or tablet. Most mHealth-delivered interventions were multicomponent and incorporated elements of in-person and telephone access to an interventionist. The findings suggested mHealth interventions may reduce pain intensity; however, pain interference and other pain-related conditions did not have a statistically significant reduction. CONCLUSIONS Research that has explored mHealth for pain self-management is beginning to move beyond feasibility. The few experimental studies conducted in older adults are heterogeneous, and the interventions are mostly multicomponent. It is premature to conclude the interventions' significant effect on pain or pain-related symptoms. As technology continues to integrate into health care, more experimental research is warranted to examine the efficacy of mHealth interventions on a variety of pain outcomes in older adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although mHealth technology is an emerging approach for enabling self-management/education of hip/knee osteoarthritis (OA) that may reduce burdens in primary and secondary care, no scoping review has been conducted to comprehensively review the scope of mHealth technology in managing hip/knee OA. This scoping review and scientometric analyses aimed to summarize the current state of research on the use of mHealth technology (mobile applications/web-based interventions) for self-management/education of adults with hip/knee OA, identify key research activities, and provide future directions on the development/usage of mHealth technology. METHODS The Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework was employed, augmented with scientometric analyses. Six databases were searched from inception to 31 May 2021. Findings were reported according to the PRISMA extension for scoping review. Co-word, co-author, and co-citation scientometric analyses were conducted to examine the social and intellectual connections of the research field (e.g., research hotspots and researcher collaborations). RESULTS Twenty mHealth programs for promoting self-management of hip/knee OA were identified. The programs mainly included exercises or directives on performance of exercises. Compared to no interventions, mHealth technology was usable and might be more effective in improving pain, physical function, and quality of life in individuals with OA. The scientometric analyses identified multiple co-occurring keywords that reflected conceptual properties of this research domain. Although some intellectual connections among authors, research articles, and journals were noted, there were insufficient international collaborations in this field. DISCUSSION While individual small-scale studies highlighted promising short-term effects of mHealth technology in self-managing hip/knee OA, many mHealth technologies were developed without clinicians' and/or patients' contributions. Future mHealth programs should be developed based on a strong theoretical background and professional inputs. The long-term benefits and cost-effectiveness of mHealth technologies, user experience, as well as cross-cultural adaptation of these technologies should be evaluated.

Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to examine older adults' preferences for conversational pain management content to incorporate in an interactive application (app) for pain self-management. Conversational statements and questions were written as a script to encourage evidence-based pain self-management behaviors. The content was converted from text to female chatbot speech and saved as four groups of MP3 files. A purposive sample of 22 older adults participated in a guided interaction through the MP3 files. One-on-one interviews were conducted to garner participants' conversational content preferences. Overall, participants want the conversational content to increase health care provider engagement in pain management communication. Older adults preferred the inclusion of conversational statements and questions for monitoring the multifaceted dimensions of pain, treatment accountability, guidance for alternative treatments, and undesirable effects from pain treatments. Abstract
BACKGROUND Usability is a key factor affecting the acceptance of mobile health applications (mHealth apps) for elderly individuals, but traditional usability evaluation methods may not be suitable for use in this population because of aging barriers. The objectives of this study were to identify, explore, and summarize the current state of the literature on the usability evaluation of mHealth apps for older adults and to incorporate these methods into the appropriate evaluation stage. METHODS Electronic searches were conducted in 10 databases. Inclusion criteria were articles focused on the usability evaluation of mHealth apps designed for older adults. The included studies were classified according to the mHealth app usability evaluation framework, and the suitability of evaluation methods for use among the elderly was analyzed. RESULTS Ninety-six articles met the inclusion criteria. Research activity increased steeply after 2013 (n = 92). Satisfaction (n = 74) and learnability (n = 60) were the most frequently evaluated critical measures, while memorability (n = 13) was the least evaluated. The ratios of satisfaction, learnability, operability, and understandability measures were significantly related to the different stages of evaluation (P < 0.05). The methods used for usability evaluation were questionnaire (n = 68), interview (n = 36), concurrent thinking aloud (n = 25), performance metrics (n = 25), behavioral observation log (n = 14), screen recording (n = 3), eye tracking (n = 1), retrospective thinking aloud (n = 1), and feedback log (n = 1). Thirty-two studies developed their own evaluation tool to assess unique design features for elderly individuals. CONCLUSION In the past five years, the number of studies in the field of usability evaluation of mHealth apps for the elderly has increased rapidly. The mHealth apps are often used as an auxiliary means of self-management to help the elderly manage their wellness and disease. According to the three stages of the mHealth app usability evaluation framework, the critical measures and evaluation methods are inconsistent. Future research should focus on selecting specific critical measures relevant to aging characteristics and adapting usability evaluation methods to elderly individuals by improving traditional tools, introducing automated evaluation tools and optimizing evaluation processes.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic pain is one of the most prevalent pathologies in the world. Treatment with neurostimulators is carried out in the most extreme cases and requires a large investment of resources. In these times of COVID-19 pandemic, we present a comprehensive solution for monitoring this kind of patient, this solution includes the development of a mobile application and a support center for remote monitoring (SCRM). MMaterial and methodology The project was developed according to the scientific evidence in the following phases: (1) approval in a multidisciplinary clinical committee of implants for chronic pain, (2) setting up a group of experts, (3) protocol adaptation for the follow-up of patients with chronic pain to the Smartphone environment, (4) technology platform adaptation to the clinical protocol (technological environment and workflow between the hospital and the SCRM), and (5) quality evaluation by survey (quantitative and qualitative) of a small series of patients. Results The application was evaluated by asking for user opinions about design and usefulness with the first implanted patients. Some minor adjustments were made concerning downloadable material and screen color and text. Conclusions Developing a comprehensive solution should be based on scientific principles and in accordance with established protocols. A support center ensures greater adherence for follow-up and better patient care.

Abstract
Background
Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are systemic conditions associated with a high social and health impact. New treatments have changed the prognosis of IMIDs and have increased patient autonomy in disease management. Mobile apps have enormous potential to improve health outcomes in patients with IMIDs. Although a large number of IMID apps are available, the app market is not regulated, and functionality and reliability remain uncertain.
Objective
Our aims are to review available apps for patients with IMIDs or caregivers and to describe the main characteristics and functionalities of these apps.
Methods
We performed an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study of all apps for patients with IMIDs. Between April 5 and 14, 2021, we conducted a search of the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android) platforms. We used the names of the different IMIDs as search terms. The inclusion criteria were as follows: content related to IMIDs, English or Spanish language, and user population consisting of patients and health care consumers, including family and caregivers. The variables analyzed were as follows: app name, type of IMID, platform (Android or iOS), country of origin, language, category of the app, cost, date of the last update, size, downloads, author affiliation, and functionalities.
Results
We identified 713 apps in the initial search, and 243 apps met the criteria and were analyzed. Of these, 37% (n=90) were on Android, 27.2% (n=66) on iOS, and 35.8% (n=87) on both platforms. The most frequent categories were health and well-being/fitness apps (n=188, 48.5%) and medicine (n=82, 37.9%). A total of 211 (82.3%) apps were free. The mean time between the date of the analysis and the date of the most recent update was 18.5 (SD 19.3) months. Health care professionals were involved in the development of 100 (41.1%) apps. We found differences between Android and iOS in the mean time since the last update (16.2, SD 14.7 months vs 30.3, SD 25.7 months) and free apps (85.6% vs 75.8%; respectively). The functionalities were as follows: general information about lifestyles, nutrition, or exercises (n=135, 55.6%); specific information about the disease or treatment (n=102, 42%); recording of symptoms or adverse events (n=51, 21%); agenda/calendar (n=44, 18.1%); reminder medication (n=41, 16.9%); and recording of patient-reported outcomes (n=41, 16.9%). A total of 147 (60.5%) apps had more than one functionality.
Conclusions
IMID-related apps are heterogeneous in terms of functionality and reliability. Apps may be a useful complement to IMID care, especially inpatient education (their most frequent functionality). However, more than half of the IMID apps had not been developed by health care professionals or updated in the last year.

Abstract
Objectives eHealth refers to health services and health information delivered or
enhanced through the internet and related technologies. The number of
eHealth interventions for chronic pain self-management is increasing.
However, little evidence has been found for the overall efficacy of these
interventions for older adults. The aim of the current study was to use a
Collective Intelligence approach to identify the barriers and specific user
needs of middle-aged and older adults using eHealth for chronic pain
self-management. Methods A Collective Intelligence workshop was conducted with middle-aged and older
adults to generate, clarify, select, and structure ideas in relation to
barriers to eHealth use and specific design requirements for the purposes of
chronic pain self-management. Prior to attending the workshop, participants
received a trigger question requesting the identification of five barriers
to eHealth use for chronic pain self-management. These barriers were
categorised and presented to the group along with barrier-related scenarios
and user need prompts, resulting in the generation of a set of ranked
barriers and a set of user needs. Results A total of 78 barriers were identified, from which six categories emerged:
Content, Support, Technological, Personal, Computer Literacy and
Accessibility. Additional idea-writing and group reflection in response to
these barriers revealed 97 user needs. Conclusion This is the first study to use Collective Intelligence methods to investigate
barriers to eHealth technology use and the specific user needs of
middle-aged and older adults in the context of chronic pain self-management.
The results of the current study provide a platform for the design and
development of enhanced eHealth interventions for this population.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic pain is one of the most prevalent pathologies in the world. Treatment with neurostimulators is carried out in the most extreme cases and requires a large investment of resources. In these times of the COVID19 pandemic, we present a comprehensive solution for monitoring this kind of patient, this solution includes the development of a mobile application and a support center for remote monitoring (SCRM). Material and methodology The project was developed according to the scientific evidence in the following phases: (1) Approval in a multidisciplinary clinical committee of implants for chronic pain, (2) Setting up a group of experts, (3) Protocol adaptation for the follow-up of patients with chronic pain to the Smartphone environment, (4) Technology platform adaptation to the clinical protocol (technological environment and workflow between the hospital and the SCRM), and (5) Quality evaluation by survey (quantitative and qualitative) of a small series of patients. Results The application was evaluated by asking for user opinions about design and usefulness with the first implanted patients. Some minor adjustments were made concerning downloadable material and screen color and text. Conclusions Developing a comprehensive solution should be based on scientific principles and in accordance with established protocols. A support center ensures greater adherence for follow-up and better patient care.

Abstract
Background Emerging evidence suggests that patients are increasingly willing to use digital mobile health applications for rheumatoid arthritis (RA apps). The development and diffusion of RA apps open the possibility of improved management of the disease and better physician–patient interactions. However, adoption rates among apps have been lower than hoped, and research shows that many available RA apps lack key features. There is little research exploring patient preferences for RA apps or patients’ habits and preferences for app payment, which are likely key factors affecting adoption of this technology. This study seeks to understand characteristics of RA patients who have adopted RA apps, their preferences for app features, and their willingness to pay for, and experiences with app payment. Methods Data for this study come from a 33-question online survey of patients with RA in Canada and the United States (N=30). Information on demographics, diagnosis and management of RA, current use and desired features of RA apps, and prior experience with and willingness to pay for an app was collected. Descriptive statistics are reported, and bivariate analyses (chi-square, point-biserial correlation, and ANOVA) were performed to understand relationships between variables. Results Respondents showed a clear preference for certain app features, namely symptom tracking, scheduling appointments, and reminders. Physician recommendation for an app and patient tracking of symptoms with an app were significantly related to patient adoption of an RA app. Years since diagnosis with RA, physician recommendation for an RA app, and current use of a non-RA health tracking app were significantly related to patients’ willingness to pay a subscription for an RA app. Conclusion RA patients appear to prefer task support features in an RA app, notably symptom tracking, appointment scheduling, and reminders, over other features such as those related to dialogue support and social support. The choice of whether an RA app will be free or based on a subscription, pay-per-service, or one-time purchase model may also play a role in eventual adoption. Similarly, physician recommendation appears to influence patients’ decision to use an RA app as well as their willingness to pay a subscription for an app.

Abstract
(1) Background: Older people’s chronic pain is often not well managed because of fears of side-effects and under-reporting. Telehealth interventions, in the form of smartphone applications, are attracting much interest in the management of chronic diseases, with new and evolving approaches in response to current population demographics. However, the extent to which telehealth interventions may be used to promote and effect the self-management of chronic pain is not established. (2) Aim: To provide an objective review of the existing quantitative and qualitative evidence pertaining to the benefits of smartphone applications for the management of chronic pain in older people. (3) Methods: A literature search was undertaken using PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Embase, PsychINFO, the Cochrane database, Science Direct and references of retrieved articles. The data were independently extracted by two reviewers from the original reports. (4) Results: This integrative systematic review identified 10 articles considering smartphone applications related to self-management of chronic pain among older adults. (5) Conclusions: It is important for future research to not only examine the effects of smartphone initiatives, but also to compare their safety, acceptability, efficacy and cost–benefit ratio in relation to existing treatment modalities.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness of self-management interventions for older adults with cancer and to determine the effective components of said interventions. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of self-management interventions for older adults (65+) with cancer guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis statement. We conducted an exhaustive search of the following databases: Ageline, AMED, ASSIA, CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, Medline, PsychINFO, and Sociological Abstracts. We assessed for quality using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and Down & Black for quasi-experimental studies, with data synthesized in a narrative and tabular format. RESULTS Sixteen thousand nine hundred and eight-five titles and abstracts were screened, subsequently 452 full-text papers were reviewed by two independent reviewers, of which 13 full-text papers were included in the final review. All self-management interventions included in this review measured Quality of Life; other outcomes included mood, self-care activity, supportive care needs, self-advocacy, pain intensity, and analgesic intake; only one intervention measured frailty. Effective interventions were delivered by a multidisciplinary teams (n = 4), nurses (n = 3), and mental health professionals (n = 1). Self-management core skills most commonly targeted included: problem solving; behavioural self-monitoring and tailoring; and settings goals and action planning. CONCLUSIONS Global calls to action argue for increased emphasize on self-management but presently, few interventions exist that explicitly target the self-management needs of older adults with cancer. Future work should focus on explicit pathways to support older adults and their caregivers to prepare for and engage in cancer self-management processes and behaviours.

Abstract
While there has been a rapid growth of digital health apps to support chronic diseases, clear standards on how to best evaluate the quality of these evolving tools are absent. This scoping review aims to synthesize the emerging field of mobile health app quality assessment by reviewing criteria used by previous studies to assess the quality of mobile apps for chronic disease management. A literature review was conducted in September 2017 for published studies that use a set of quality criteria to directly evaluate two or more patient-facing apps supporting promote chronic disease management. This resulted in 8182 citations which were reviewed by research team members, resulting in 65 articles for inclusion. An inductive coding schema to synthesize the quality criteria utilized by included articles was developed, with 40 unique quality criteria identified. Of the 43 (66%) articles that reported resources used to support criteria selection, 19 (29%) used clinical guidelines, and 10 (15%) used behavior change theory. The most commonly used criteria included the presence of user engagement or behavior change functions (97%, n = 63) and technical features of the app such as customizability (20%, n = 13, while Usability was assessed by 24 studies (36.9%). This study highlights the significant variation in quality criteria employed for the assessment of mobile health apps. Future methods for app evaluation will benefit from approaches that leverage the best evidence regarding the clinical impact and behavior change mechanisms while more directly reflecting patient needs when evaluating the quality of apps.

Abstract
Chronic pain is a significant health issue that affects approximately 50 million adults in the United States. Traditional interventions are not always an effective treatment strategy for pain control. However, the wide adoption of smartphones and the rapid growth of health information technologies over the past decade have created opportunities to use mobile health (mHealth) applications (apps) for pain tracking and self-management. In this PRISMA-compliant systematic review, we assessed the current U.S.-based research on pain-related mHealth apps to describe the app components and determine the efficacy of these interventions for persons with acute or chronic pain. We conducted a comprehensive search of five databases based on methodological guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute. We included articles reporting original data on mHealth interventions with pain intensity as a primary or secondary outcome and excluded articles that utilized multimodal interventions. Of the original 4959 articles, only five studies met the eligibility criteria. Most of the interventions included feasibility or pilot studies, and all studies were published between 2015 and 2018. Two of the five studies used visual analog scales. Only two of the studies reported statistically significant pain intensity outcomes, and considerable heterogeneity between the studies limited our ability to generalize findings or conduct a meta-analysis. Research investigating the components and efficacy of pain-related mHealth apps as interventions is an emerging field. To better understand the potential clinical benefits of mHealth apps designed to manage pain, further research is needed.

Abstract
No guidelines exist for the conduct and reporting of manuscripts with systematic searches of app stores for, and then appraisal of, mobile health apps ('health app-focused reviews'). We undertook a scoping review including a systematic literature search for health app-focused reviews describing systematic app store searches and app appraisal, for apps designed for patients or clinicians. We created a data extraction template which adapted data elements from the PRISMA guidelines for systematic literature reviews to data elements operationalised for health app-focused reviews. We extracted the data from included health app-focused reviews to describe: (1) which elements of the adapted 'usual' methods of systematic review are used; (2) methods of app appraisal; and (3) reporting of clinical efficacy and recommendations for app use. From 2798 records, the 26 included health app-focused reviews showed incomplete or unclear reporting of review protocol registration; use of reporting guidelines; processes of screening apps; data extraction; and appraisal tools. Reporting of clinical efficacy of apps or recommendations for app use were infrequent. Abstract
Chronic pain is one of the major causes of disability in the general population. Even though there are effective treatment options available for reducing symptoms, these treatments often do not have consistent lasting effects. As the usage of mobile devices has increased enormously during the last few years, mobile application-based treatment options are widespread. Such app-based programs are not yet empirically proven but might enable patients to become more independent in their pain management in order to prevent relapse. The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize the literature on mobile application-based interventions for chronic pain patients. Therefore, three electronic bibliographic databases, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science, were searched for studies that investigated the effectiveness of mobile application-based intervention for chronic pain on pain intensity. The final sample comprised twenty-two studies, with a total of 4679 individuals. Twelve of these twenty-two studies used a randomized control trial (RCT) design, while ten studies only used an observational design. For all twenty-two studies, a small but significant effect (d = -0.40) was found when compared to baseline measures or control groups. The results suggest that apps-based treatment can be helpful in reducing pain, especially in the long-term.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disabling, inflammatory joint condition affecting 0.5%-1% of the global population. Physical activity (PA) and exercise are recommended for people with RA, but uptake and adherence tend to be low. Smartphone apps could assist people with RA to achieve PA recommendations. However, it is not known whether high quality, evidence-informed PA apps that include behavior change techniques (BCTs) previously identified as effective for PA adherence are available for people with RA. OBJECTIVE This study aims to systematically identify apps that include goals to facilitate PA for adults with RA and assess app quality and content for the inclusion of relevant BCTs against recommendations for cardiorespiratory, resistance, flexibility, and neuromotor PA and exercise. METHODS A systematic search of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the United Kingdom was conducted to identify English language apps that promote PA for adults with RA. Two researchers independently assessed app quality (mobile app rating scale [MARS]; range 0-5) and content (BCT Taxonomy version 1, World Health Organization, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the European League against Rheumatism recommendations for PA). The completeness of reporting of PA prescription was evaluated using a modified version of the Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template (CERT; range 0-14). RESULTS A total of 14,047 apps were identified. Following deduplication, 2737 apps were screened for eligibility; 6 apps were downloaded (2 on the Apple App Store and 4 on the Google Play Store), yielding 4 unique apps. App quality varied (MARS score 2.25-4.17). Only 1 app was congruent with all aspects of the PA recommendations. All apps completely or partially recommended flexibility and resistance exercises, 3 apps completely or partially advised some form of neuromotor exercise, but only 2 offered full or partial guidance on cardiorespiratory exercise. Completeness of exercise reporting was mixed (CERT scores 7-14 points) and 3-7 BCTs were identified. Two BCTs were common to all apps (information about health consequences and instruction on how to perform behavior). Higher quality apps included a greater number of BCTs and were more closely aligned to PA guidance. No published trials evaluating the effect of the included apps were identified. CONCLUSIONS This review identifies 4 PA apps of mixed quality and content for use by people with RA. Higher quality apps were more closely aligned to PA guidance and included a greater number of BCTs. One high-quality app (Rheumatoid Arthritis Information Support and Education) included 7 BCTs and was fully aligned with PA and exercise guidance. The effect of apps on PA adherence should be established before implementation.

Abstract
Background: Chronic pain is a major health problem among older adults and their informal caregivers, which has negative effects on their physical and psychological status. The dyadic pain management program (DPMP) is provided to community-dwelling older adults and informal caregivers to help the dyads reduce pain symptoms, improve the quality of life, develop good exercise habits, as well as cope and break the vicious circle of pain. Methods: A pilot randomized controlled trial was designed and all the dyads were randomly divided into two groups: the DPMP group and control group. Dyads in the DPMP group participated in an 8-week DPMP (4-week face-to-face program and 4-week home-based program), whereas dyads in the control group received one page of simple pain-related information. Results: In total, 64 dyads participated in this study. For baseline comparisons, no significant differences were found between the two groups. After the interventions, the pain score was significantly reduced from 4.25 to 2.57 in the experimental group, respectively. In the repeated measures ANOVA, the differences in pain score (F = 107.787, p < 0.001, d = 0.777) was statistically significant for the group-by-time interaction. After the interventions, the experimental group participants demonstrated significantly higher pain self-efficacy compared with the control group (F = 80.535, p < 0.001, d = 0.722). Furthermore, the elderly increased exercise time significantly (F = 111.212, p < 0.001, d = 0.782) and reported developing good exercise habits. Conclusions: These results provide preliminary support for the effectiveness of a DPMP for relieving the symptoms of chronic pain among the elderly.

Abstract
Introduction Arthritic pain is a major cause of illness and disability among older people. People living with arthritic pain carry out self-management activities to adequately manage their pain. As the trend of smartphone uptake continues to rise among older people, there are opportunities to explore the role of these devices in helping older people better manage their pain. Aim: To explore the attitudes and experiences of older people with chronic arthritic pain towards using an app for their pain selfmanagement. Methods A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with community-dwelling older Australians living with arthritic pain (n = 16). Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Four themes emerged from the data: (1) Apps are valuable self-management tool, but they do have the potential for harm; (2) A pain self-management app needs to strictly align with the user's needs; (3) Clinician's involvement is crucial when integrating an app into older people's pain selfmanagement regime; and (4) pain self-management app must be designed with enduser in mind. In addition, suggestions on how to make an app more useful and userfriendly were offered by the participants. Discussion While pain self-management apps have the potential to assist older people in their pain self-management process, this modality is not of interest to all older people. Adaptable apps that offer clinician input may be best placed to offer individual level relevance to older users. Future pain selfmanagement app development endeavors should adopt a co-design approach where older people are involved through all stages of design and development.

Abstract
Background Although many pain-related smartphone apps exist, little attention has been given to understanding how these apps are used over time and what factors contribute to greater compliance and patient engagement. Objective This retrospective analysis was designed to help identify factors that predicted the benefits and future use of a smartphone pain app among patients with chronic pain. Methods An app designed for both Android and iOS devices was developed by Brigham and Women’s Hospital Pain Management Center (BWH-PMC) for users with chronic pain to assess and monitor pain and communicate with their providers. The pain app offered chronic pain assessment, push notification reminders and communication, personalized goal setting, relaxation sound files, topics of interest with psychological and medical pain management strategies, and line graphs from daily assessments. BWH-PMC recruited 253 patients with chronic pain over time to use the pain app. All subjects completed baseline measures and were asked to record their progress every day using push notification daily assessments. After 3 months, participants completed follow-up questionnaires and answered satisfaction questions. We defined the number of completed daily assessments as a measure of patient engagement with the pain app. Results The average age of participants was 51.5 years (SD 13.7, range 18-92), 72.8% (182/253) were female, and 36.8% (78/212) reported the low back as their primary pain site. The number of daily assessments ranged from 1 to 426 (average 62.0, SD 49.9). The app was easy to introduce among patients, and it was well accepted. Those who completed more daily assessments (greater patient engagement) throughout the study were more likely to report higher pain intensity, more activity interference, and greater disability and were generally overweight compared with others. Patients with higher engagement with the app rated the app as offering greater benefit in coping with their pain and expressed more willingness to use the app in the future (P<.05) compared with patients showing lower engagement. Patients completing a small number of daily assessments reported less pain intensity, less daily activity interference, and less pain-related disability on average and were less likely to use the two-way messaging than those who were more engaged with the pain app (P<.05). Conclusions Patients with chronic pain who appeared to manage their pain better were less likely to report benefits of a smartphone pain app designed for chronic pain management. They demonstrated lower patient engagement in reporting their daily progress, in part, owing to the perceived burden of regularly using an app without a perceived benefit. An intrinsically different pain app designed and targeted for individuals based on early identification of user characteristics and adapted for each individual would likely improve compliance and app-related patient engagement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic health (eHealth) is the use of information and communication technology in the context of health care and health research. Recently, there has been a rise in the number of eHealth modalities and the frequency with which they are used to deliver technology-assisted self-management interventions for people living with chronic pain. However, there has been little or no research directly comparing these eHealth modalities. OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review with a network meta-analysis (NMA) is to compare the effectiveness of eHealth modalities in the context of chronic pain. METHODS Randomized controlled trials (N>20 per arm) that investigated interventions for adults with chronic pain, delivered via an eHealth modality, were included. Included studies were categorized into their primary node of delivery. Data were extracted on the primary outcome, pain interference, and secondary outcomes, pain severity, psychological distress, and health-related quality of life. Pairwise meta-analyses were undertaken where possible, and an NMA was conducted to generate indirect comparisons and rankings of modalities for reducing pain interference. RESULTS The search returned 18,470 studies with 18,349 being excluded (duplicates=2310; title and abstract=16,039). Of the remaining papers, 30 studies with 5394 randomized participants were included in the review. Rankings tentatively indicated that modern eHealth modalities are the most effective, with a 43% chance that mobile apps delivered the most effective interventions, followed by a 34% chance that interventions delivered via virtual reality were the most effective. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review with an NMA generated comparisons between eHealth modalities previously not compared to determine which delivered the most effective interventions for the reduction of pain interference in chronic pain patients. There are limitations with this review, in particular, the underrepresented nature of some eHealth modalities included in the analysis. However, in the event that the review is regularly updated, a clear ranking of eHealth modalities for the reduction of pain interference will emerge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Optimal management of chronic arthritic pain experienced by older adults involves applying active self-management strategies every day. Cost-effective and innovative strategies to help build older people's pain self-management capability are required. This study protocol is designed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of a pain self-management app among older people living in the community with arthritic pain. METHODS/DESIGN This is a phase I feasibility study. A pre-post test study design will be used to trial a freely available pain self-management app named Rheumatoid Arthritis Information Support and Education ("RAISE") for 14 days. Thirty community-dwelling older people living with arthritic pain who use a smartphone will be recruited from (1) various community-based social clubs/organizations/groups or (2) via Facebook groups with potentially high number of older members. In addition, snowballing sampling approach will also be utilized.These participants will trial the RAISE app, which was selected following a systematic evaluation of all available chronic pain apps by the investigator team. A face-to-face or telephone-based meeting will be organized with all consenting participants in order to seek their informed consent, download and set up the intervention app on their mobile device, be provided with app training, and complete the pre-test data (Time 1 (T1)). Participants will be asked to use the RAISE app as desired for 14 days. Post-test data collection (Time 2 (T2)) will occur on day 15. Data collected includes participant's demographic and clinical information, pain scores, pain self-efficacy, and online technology self-efficacy. Participants will be invited to take part in a semi-structured telephone interview at T2 to explore their experiences of using the app.An evaluation of patterns of app use, recruitment, retention, attrition rates, and analysis of the missing data will inform the study and intervention feasibility. Preliminary outcomes are participant's pain intensity and interference, pain self-efficacy, and online technology self-efficacy. DISCUSSION This study will help us better understand the feasibility and acceptability of using this novel intervention among community-dwelling older people living with arthritic pain. Abstract
Background Smartphone apps are a potential mechanism for development of self-management skills in people with persistent pain. However, the inclusion of best-practice content items in available pain management apps fostering core self-management skills for self-management support is not known. Objective The aim of the study was to evaluate the contents of smartphone apps providing information on pain management strategies for people with persistent pain facilitating self-management support and to appraise the app quality. Methods A systematic search was performed in the New Zealand App Store and Google Play Store. Apps were included if they were designed for people with persistent pain, provided information on pain self-management strategies, and were available in English. App contents were evaluated using an a priori 14-item self-management support (SMS-14) checklist. App quality was assessed using the 23-item Mobile Apps Rating Scale. Results Of the 939 apps screened, 19 apps met the inclusion criteria. Meditation and guided relaxation were the most frequently included self-management strategies. Overall, the included apps met a median of 4 (range 1-8) of the SMS-14 checklist. A total of 3 apps (Curable, PainScale-Pain Diary and Coach, and SuperBetter) met the largest number of items (8 out of 14) to foster self-management of pain. Self-monitoring of symptoms (n=11) and self-tailoring of strategies (n=9) were frequently featured functions, whereas a few apps had features facilitating social support and enabling communicating with clinicians. No apps provided information tailored to the cultural needs of the user. The app quality mean scores using Mobile Apps Rating Scale ranged from 2.7 to 4.5 (out of 5.0). Although use of 2 apps (Headspace and SuperBetter) has been shown to improve health outcomes, none of the included apps have been evaluated in people with persistent pain. Conclusions Of the 3 apps (Curable, PainScale-Pain Diary and Coach, and SuperBetter) that met the largest number of items to support skills in self-management of pain, 2 apps (PainScale-Pain Diary and Coach and SuperBetter) were free, suggesting the potential for using apps as a scalable, wide-reaching intervention to complement face-to-face care. However, none provided culturally tailored information. Although 2 apps (Headspace and SuperBetter) were validated to show improved health outcomes, none were tested in people with persistent pain. Both users and clinicians should be aware of such limitations and make informed choices in using or recommending apps as a self-management tool. For better integration of apps in clinical practice, concerted efforts are required among app developers, clinicians, and people with persistent pain in developing apps and evaluating for clinical efficacy.

Abstract
Background Pain is a common condition with a significant physical, psychosocial, and economic impact. Due to enormous progress in mobile device technology as well as the increase in smartphone ownership in the general population, mobile apps can be used to monitor patients with pain and support them in pain management. Objective The aim of this review was to assess the efficacy of smartphone or computer tablet apps in the management of patients with pain. Methods In December 2017, a literature search was performed in the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, and PsycINFO. In addition, a bibliography search was conducted. We included studies with at least 20 participants per arm that evaluated the effects of apps on smartphones or computer tablets on improvement in pain. Results A total of 15 studies with 1962 patients met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 4 studies examined the effect of mobile apps on pain management in an in-clinic setting and 11 in an out-clinic setting. The majority of the original studies reported beneficial effects of the use of a pain app. Severity of pain decreased in most studies where patients were using an app compared with patients not using an app. Other outcomes, such as worst pain or quality of life showed improvements in patients using an app. Due to heterogeneity between the original studies—patient characteristics, app content, and study setting—a synthesis of the results by statistical methods was not performed. Conclusions Apps for pain management may be beneficial for patients, particularly in an out-clinic setting. Studies have shown that pain apps are workable and well liked by patients and health care professionals. There is no doubt that in the near future, mobile technologies will develop further. Medicine could profit from this development as indicated by our results, but there is a need for more scientific inputs. It is desirable to know which elements of apps or additional devices and tools may improve usability and help patients in pain management.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Mental health apps are intriguing yet challenging tools for addressing barriers to treatment in primary care. In the current review, we seek to assist primary care professionals with evaluating and integrating mental health apps into practice. We briefly summarize two leading frameworks for evaluating mental health apps and conduct a systematic review of mental health apps across a variety of areas commonly encountered in primary care. RECENT FINDINGS Existing frameworks can guide professionals and patients through the process of identifying apps and evaluating dimensions such as privacy and security, credibility, and user experience. For specific apps, several problem areas appear to have relatively more scientific evaluation in the current app landscape, including PTSD, smoking, and alcohol use. Other areas such as eating disorders not only lack evaluation, but contain a significant subset of apps providing potentially harmful advice. SUMMARY Overall, individuals seeking mental health apps will likely encounter strengths such as symptom tracking and psychoeducational components, while encountering common weaknesses such as insufficient privacy settings and little integration of empirically-supported techniques. While mental health apps may have more promise than ever, significant barriers to finding functional, usable, effective apps remain for health professionals and patients alike.

Abstract
The rapid growth of mobile health (mHealth) devices holds substantial potential for improving care and care outcomes in all patient populations, including older adults with pain. However, existing research reflects a substantial gap in knowledge about how to design, evaluate, and disseminate devices to optimally address the many challenges associated with managing pain in older persons. Given these knowledge gaps, we sought to develop a set of practice-based research priorities to facilitate innovation in this field. We employed the Cornell Research-Practice Consensus Workshop Model, an evidence-based approach to generating research priorities. Sixty participants attended the conference, where stakeholder groups included older adults with pain and their caregivers, behavioral and social scientists, healthcare providers, pain experts, and specialists in mHealth and health policy. Participants generated 13 recommendations classified into 2 categories: 1) implications for designing research on mHealth among older adults (eg, conduct research on ways to enhance accessibility of mHealth tools among diverse groups of older adults with pain, expand research on mHealth sensing applications), and 2) implementation of mHealth technology into practice and associated regulatory issues (eg, promote research on ways to initiate/sustain patient behavior change, expand research on mHealth cybersecurity and privacy issues). PERSPECTIVE: This report highlights a set of research priorities in the area of mHealth and later-life pain derived from the joint perspectives of researchers and key stakeholder groups. Addressing these priorities could help to improve the quality of care delivered to older adults with pain.
