Silicon's Role in Plant Stress Reduction and Why This Element Is Not Used Routinely for Managing Plant Health

Colonization by the endophytic fungus Phyllosticta fallopiae combined with the element Si promotes the growth of Dendrobium nobile

Endophytic fungi can promote plant growth and development, particularly of Orchidaceae species. Previously, we found that the endophytic fungus Phyllosticta fallopiae DN14, collected from Dendrobium nobile growing on rocks in a wild habitat, significantly promoted growth of its host plant D. nobile, an important herb in Chinese traditional medicine that contains the bioactive component dendrobine. Phyllosticta was positively correlated with FW and dendrobine content of D. nobile and with Si content of the epiphytic matrix. Si is also highly beneficial for the growth and productivity of many plants. Here, we co-cultured D. nobile with P. fallopiae DN14 in half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium with and without various concentrations of Si to investigate the effects of DN14 and Si on plant fresh weight and dendrobine content. We also explored the effects of DN14 infection and colonization on host plant growth, Si accumulation and transport, and expression of key genes, as well as the interaction between DN14 and Si. The combination of DN14 and Si promoted the lignification of D. nobile roots, stems, and leaves and markedly increased the thickening of xylem cell walls. Co-culture with DN14 increased transport of Si from roots to stems and from stems to leaves. Transcriptome sequencing and qRT-PCR analyses showed that enhancement of D. nobile growth by DN14 and Si may involve upregulation of plant hormone-related genes (AUX/IAA and MYC) and lignin biosynthesis genes (HCT, PAL1, and PAL2). Insoluble Si promoted the growth of DN14, perhaps through downregulation of genes (e.g., FBP, MPI, RPIAD) related to carbohydrate metabolism, and DN14 in turn promoted the transformation of insoluble Si into soluble Si for plant uptake. These findings demonstrate that endophytic fungi and Si can improve the growth of D. nobile and therefore show promise as organic amendments for commercial cultivation.

Composite Material Based on Polypropylene and Modified Natural Fillers

The work presents the results of a comprehensive study on obtaining compositions based on polypropylene and natural fillers modified by enzymatic preparations under high-shear forces. The experiment protocol includes determining the modification time and the ratio of water volume to the mass of natural filler (hydro modulus) during modification, which turned out to be different for each type of filler. Physical and mechanical analyses were conducted to evaluate the operational characteristics of the obtained composites, with particular attention given to comparing the modified compositions with their unmodified counterparts. The time and hydro module of the enzymatic modification of the natural fillers under consideration were investigated, which turned out to be different for each type of filler. It was found that surface modification of natural fillers improves mechanical properties; namely, the tensile strength of composites with wood and sunflower fillers increases by 10%, and the impact viscosity of composites also increases by 12% with wood and sunflower fillers. Water absorption decreases in composites, after 2 h boiling, with wood flour by 30% and with rice husk by 10%. After a 14-day test at room temperature, water absorption decreases by more than 30% in composites with rice husk. When determining the free surface energy of composites, it was found that the modification of the filler reduces the polarity of the composites in all samples, which can be interpreted as an improvement in the interaction between the filler and the polymer matrix. The findings of this research have important implications for the development of advanced polymeric materials that can be used in a wide range of applications, including automotive, aerospace, and construction industries. The results underscore the importance of surface modifications to optimize the properties of polymeric composites and provide valuable insights into the role of natural fillers in enhancing the performance of these materials.

Silicon nanoparticles vs trace elements toxicity: Modus operandi and its omics bases

Phytotoxicity of trace elements (commonly misunderstood as 'heavy metals') includes impairment of functional groups of enzymes, photo-assembly, redox homeostasis, and nutrient status in higher plants. Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) can ameliorate trace element toxicity. We discuss SiNPs response against several essential (such as Cu, Ni, Mn, Mo, and Zn) and non-essential (including Cd, Pb, Hg, Al, Cr, Sb, Se, and As) trace elements. SiNPs hinder root uptake and transport of trace elements as the first line of defence. SiNPs charge plant antioxidant defence against trace elements-induced oxidative stress. The enrolment of SiNPs in gene expressions was also noticed on many occasions. These genes are associated with several anatomical and physiological phenomena, such as cell wall composition, photosynthesis, and metal uptake and transport. On this note, we dedicate the later sections of this review to support an enhanced understanding of SiNPs influence on the metabolomic, proteomic, and genomic profile of plants under trace elements toxicity.

Physiological and Biochemical Aspects of Silicon-Mediated Resistance in Maize against Maydis Leaf Blight

Maydis leaf blight (MLB), caused by the necrotrophic fungus Bipolaris maydis, has caused considerable yield losses in maize production. The hypothesis that maize plants with higher foliar silicon (Si) concentration can be more resistant against MLB was investigated in this study. This goal was achieved through an in-depth analysis of the photosynthetic apparatus (parameters of leaf gas exchange chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and photosynthetic pigments) changes in activities of defense and antioxidative enzymes in leaves of maize plants with (+Si; 2 mM) and without (-Si; 0 mM) Si supplied, as well as challenged and not with B. maydis. The +Si plants showed reduced MLB symptoms (smaller lesions and lower disease severity) due to higher foliar Si concentration and less production of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and radical anion superoxide compared to -Si plants. Higher values for leaf gas exchange (rate of net CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance to water vapor, and transpiration rate) and Chl a fluorescence (variable-to-maximum Chl a fluorescence ratio, photochemical yield, and yield for dissipation by downregulation) parameters along with preserved pool of chlorophyll a+b and carotenoids were noticed for infected +Si plants compared to infected -Si plants. Activities of defense (chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, polyphenoloxidase, peroxidase, and lipoxygenase) and antioxidative (ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione reductase) enzymes were higher for infected +Si plants compared to infected -Si plants. Collectively, this study highlights the importance of using Si to boost maize resistance against MLB considering the more operative defense reactions and the robustness of the antioxidative metabolism of plants along with the preservation of their photosynthetic apparatus.

Silicate solubilizing and plant growth promoting bacteria interact with biogenic silica to impart heat stress tolerance in rice by modulating physiology and gene expression

Heat stress caused due to increasing warming climate has become a severe threat to global food production including rice. Silicon plays a major role in improving growth and productivity of rice by aiding in alleviating heat stress in rice. Soil silicon is only sparingly available to the crops can be made available by silicate solubilizing and plant-growth-promoting bacteria that possess the capacity to solubilize insoluble silicates can increase the availability of soluble silicates in the soil. In addition, plant growth promoting bacteria are known to enhance the tolerance to abiotic stresses of plants, by affecting the biochemical and physiological characteristics of plants. The present study is intended to understand the role of beneficial bacteria viz. Rhizobium sp. IIRR N1 a silicate solublizer and Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, a plant growth promoting bacteria and their interaction with insoluble silicate sources on morpho-physiological and molecular attributes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings after exposure to heat stress in a controlled hydroponic system. Joint inoculation of silicates and both the bacteria increased silicon content in rice tissue, root and shoot biomass, significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activities (viz. superoxidase dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) compared to other treatments with sole application of either silicon or bacteria. The physiological traits (viz. chlorophyll content, relative water content) were also found to be significantly enhanced in presence of silicates and both the bacteria after exposure to heat stress conditions. Expression profiling of shoot and root tissues of rice seedlings revealed that seedlings grown in the presence of silicates and both the bacteria exhibited higher expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs viz., OsHsp90, OsHsp100 and 60 kDa chaperonin), hormone-related genes (OsIAA6) and silicon transporters (OsLsi1 and OsLsi2) as compared to seedlings treated with either silicates or with the bacteria alone. The results thus reveal the interactive effect of combined application of silicates along with bacteria Rhizobium sp. IIRR N1, G. diazotrophicus inoculation not only led to augmented silicon uptake by rice seedlings but also influenced the plant biomass and elicited higher expression of HSPs, hormone-related and silicon transporter genes leading to improved tolerance of seedling to heat stress.

Biostimulant Activity of Silicate Compounds and Antagonistic Bacteria on Physiological Growth Enhancement and Resistance of Banana to Fusarium Wilt Disease

Biostimulants such as silicate (SiO₃^2-) compounds and antagonistic bacteria can alter soil microbial communities and enhance plant resistance to the pathogens and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (FOC), the causal agent of Fusarium wilt disease in bananas. A study was conducted to investigate the biostimulating effects of SiO₃^2- compounds and antagonistic bacteria on plant growth and resistance of the banana to Fusarium wilt disease. Two separate experiments with a similar experimental setup were conducted at the University of Putra Malaysia (UPM), Selangor. Both experiments were arranged in a split-plot randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replicates. SiO₃^2- compounds were prepared at a constant concentration of 1%. Potassium silicate (K₂SiO₃) was applied on soil uninoculated with FOC, and sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃) was applied to FOC-contaminated soil before integrating with antagonistic bacteria; without Bacillus spp. ((0B)-control), Bacillus subtilis (BS), and Bacillus thuringiensis (BT). Four levels of application volume of SiO₃^2- compounds [0, 20, 40, 60 mL) were used. Results showed that the integration of SiO₃^2- compounds with BS (10⁸ CFU mL^-1) enhanced the physiological growth performance of bananas. Soil application of 28.86 mL of K₂SiO₃ with BS enhanced the height of the pseudo-stem by 27.91 cm. Application of Na₂SiO₃ and BS significantly reduced the Fusarium wilt incidence in bananas by 56.25%. However, it was recommended that infected roots of bananas should be treated with 17.36 mL of Na₂SiO₃ with BS to stimulate better growth performance.

Silicon ameliorates clubroot responses in canola (Brassica napus): A "multi-omics"-based investigation into possible mechanisms

Clubroot disease, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin, results in severe yield losses in Brassica crops, including canola. Silicon (Si) mitigates several stresses and enhances plant resistance to phytopathogens. We investigated the effects of Si on clubroot disease symptoms in canola at two concentrations of Si, Si: soil in 1: 100 w/w (Si1.0) and Si: soil in 1:200 w/w (Si0.5) under greenhouse conditions. In addition, the effects of Si on P. brassicae-induced gene expression, endogenous levels of phytohormones and metabolites were studied using "omics" approaches. Si application reduced clubroot symptoms and improved plant growth parameters. Gene expression analysis revealed increased transcript-level responses in Si1.0 compared to Si0.5 plants at 7-, 14-, and 21-days post-inoculation (dpi). Pathogen-induced transcript-level changes were affected by Si treatment, with genes related to antioxidant activity (e.g., POD, CAT), phytohormone biosynthesis and signalling (e.g., PDF1.2, NPR1, JAZ, IPT, TAA), nitrogen metabolism (e.g., NRT, AAT), and secondary metabolism (e.g., PAL, BCAT4) exhibiting differential expression. Endogenous levels of phytohormones (e.g., auxin, cytokinin), a majority of the amino acids and secondary metabolites (e.g., glucosinolates) were increased at 7 dpi, followed by a decrease at 14- and 21-dpi due to Si-treatment. Stress hormones such as abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), and jasmonic acid (JA) also decreased at the later time points in Si0.5, and Si1.0 treated plants. Si appears to improve clubroot symptoms while enhancing plant growth and associated metabolic processes, including nitrogen metabolism and secondary metabolite biosynthesis.

Closing the Nutrient Loop-The New Approaches to Recovering Biomass Minerals during the Biorefinery Processes

The recovery of plant mineral nutrients from the bio-based value chains is essential for a sustainable, circular bioeconomy, wherein resources are (re)used sustainably. The widest used approach is to recover plant nutrients on the last stage of biomass utilization processes-e.g., from ash, wastewater, or anaerobic digestate. The best approach is to recover mineral nutrients from the initial stages of biomass biorefinery, especially during biomass pre-treatments. Our paper aims to evaluate the nutrient recovery solutions from a trans-sectorial perspective, including biomass processing and the agricultural use of recovered nutrients. Several solutions integrated with the biomass pre-treatment stage, such as leaching/bioleaching, recovery from pre-treatment neoteric solvents, ionic liquids (ILs), and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) or integrated with hydrothermal treatments are discussed. Reducing mineral contents on silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen biomass before the core biorefinery processes improves processability and yield and reduces corrosion and fouling effects. The recovered minerals are used as bio-based fertilizers or as silica-based plant biostimulants, with economic and environmental benefits.

Silicon Mediated Plant Immunity against Nematodes: Summarizing the Underline Defence Mechanisms in Plant Nematodes Interaction

Silicon (Si) is known to stimulate plant resistance against different phytopathogens, i.e., bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. It is an efficient plant growth regulator under various biotic and abiotic stresses. Silicon-containing compounds, including silicon dioxide, SiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs), nano-chelated silicon fertilizer (NCSF), sodium siliconate, and sodium metasilicate, are effective in damaging various nematodes that reduce their reproduction, galling, and disease severity. The defence mechanisms in plant-nematodes interaction may involve a physical barrier, plant defence-associated enzyme activity, synthesis of antimicrobial compounds, and transcriptional regulation of defence-related genes. In the current review, we focused on silicon and its compounds in controlling plant nematodes and regulating different defence mechanisms involved in plant-nematodes interaction. Furthermore, the review aims to evaluate the potential role of Si application in improving plant resistance against nematodes and highlight its need for efficient plant-nematodes disease management.

Field application of silicon alleviates drought stress and improves water use efficiency in wheat

Detrimental impacts of drought on crop yield have tripled in the last 50 years with climate models predicting that the frequency of such droughts will intensify in the future. Silicon (Si) accumulation, especially in Poaceae crops such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), may alleviate the adverse impacts of drought. We have very limited information, however, about whether Si supplementation could alleviate the impacts of drought under field conditions and no studies have specifically manipulated rainfall. Using field-based rain exclusion shelters, we determined whether Si supplementation (equivalent to 39, 78 and 117 kg ha^-1) affected T. aestivum growth, elemental chemistry [Si, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N)], physiology (rates of photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency) and yield (grain production) under ambient and drought (50% of ambient) rainfall scenarios. Averaged across Si treatments, drought reduced shoot mass by 21% and grain production by 18%. Si supplementation increased shoot mass by up to 43% and 73% in ambient and drought water treatments, respectively, and restored grain production in droughted plants to levels comparable with plants supplied with ambient rainfall. Si supplementation increased leaf-level water use efficiency by 32-74%, depending on Si supplementation rates. Water supply and Si supplementation did not alter concentrations of C and N, but Si supplementation increased shoot C content by 39% and 83% under ambient and drought conditions, respectively. This equates to an increase from 6.4 to 8.9 tonnes C ha^-1 and from 4.03 to 7.35 tonnes C ha^-1 under ambient and drought conditions, respectively. We conclude that Si supplementation ameliorated the negative impacts of drought on T. aestivum growth and grain yield, potentially through its beneficial impacts on water use efficiency. Moreover, the beneficial impacts of Si on plant growth and C storage may render Si supplementation a useful tool for both drought mitigation and C sequestration.

Seed Priming with Glass Waste Microparticles and Red Light Irradiation Mitigates Thermal and Water Stresses in Seedlings of Moringa oleifera

The association between population increase and the exploitation of natural resources and climate change influences the demand for food, especially in semi-arid regions, highlighting the need for technologies that could provide cultivated species with better adaptation to agroecosystems. Additionally, developing cultivation technologies that employ waste materials is highly desirable for sustainable development. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate whether seed priming with glass waste microparticles used as a silicon source under red light irradiation mitigates the effects of thermal and water stress on seedlings of Moringa oleifera. The experimental design was set up in randomized blocks using a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of seed priming (NSP—no seed priming, and SPSi—seed priming with glass microparticles under red light irradiation), soil water replenishment (W50—50%, and W100—100% of crop evapotranspiration—ETc), and temperature change (TC30°—30 °C day/25 °C night and TC40°—40 °C day/35 °C night). Seed priming with glass microparticles under red light irradiation mitigated the effects of thermal and water stress on seedlings of Moringa oleifera seedlings through the homeostasis of gas exchange, leaf water status, osmotic adjustment, and the antioxidant mechanism.

Different Concentrations of Potassium Silicate in Nutrient Solution Affects Selected Growth Characteristics and Mineral Composition of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of potassium silicate (K₂SiO₃) on the physiological and growth characteristics and elemental composition of barley plants. Hydroponically grown barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) var. Wilma was exposed to four different levels of Si in the form of K₂SiO₃ at concentrations of 0 (Si₀), 0.5 (Si_0.5), 1 (Si₁) or 1.5 (Si_1.5) mM Si. Plants were analyzed for root length, number of dry leaves, number of trichomes, electron transport system activity in mitochondria (ETS), leaf pigment content and elemental composition of roots and leaves. Treatment with Si_0.5 significantly increased the concentration of total chlorophylls, root length and ETS activity in barley. Plants with no Si added to the nutrient solution had significantly more dry leaves than plants from all Si-treated groups. Necrosis was observed in Si₀ plants, while leaf damage was not visible in treated plants. According to the results of the study, we evidenced that plants were stressed due to Si deficiency. The addition of K₂SiO₃ significantly affected the concentration of Si, K, Ca, Cl, S, Mn, Fe and Zn in roots and leaves of barley. In barley treated with Si_0.5, plants showed the best performance in terms of their physiological characteristics and growth.

Foliar Silicon Spray before Summer Cutting Propagation Enhances Resistance to Powdery Mildew of Daughter Plants

Silicon (Si) has beneficial effects on not only plant growth but also against biotic and abiotic stresses. However, a few studies focus on how Si application helps strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) resist powdery mildew. The aim of this work was to find out the optimal Si application method before cutting propagation to enhance the resistance to powdery mildew in strawberry “daughter” plants. Naturally infected “mother” plants of ‘Sulhyang’, ‘Maehyang’, and ‘Kuemsil’ strawberries were supplied with Si. Potassium silicate (K₂SiO₃) at a final concentration of 75 mg·L⁻¹ Si was either added to the medium for drenching or sprayed to the leaves of the “mother” or “daughter” plant, or soluble Si fertilizer was used to dress the “mother” plant. The Si application significantly increased the shoot fresh weight of the “daughter” plants. Supplemental Si also increased the contents of phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg). In addition, the Si treatment decreased the damage of powdery mildew by increased level of proline content and suppressive reactive oxygen species. After applying Si, the length and density of hyphae on the leaf surface decreased. In addition, the infected area of “daughter” plant leaves covered with powdery mildew decreased. This study also demonstrated that Si increased the expression of resistance-gene and decreased the expression of susceptibility-gene of strawberry. Overall, Si application promoted the growth of the “daughter” plants regardless of the application method. Direct foliar Si spray to the “daughter” plants before cutting propagation is recommended to increase their resistance to powdery mildew.

Selenium enhances chilling stress tolerance in coffee species by modulating nutrient, carbohydrates, and amino acids content

The effects of selenium (Se) on plant metabolism have been reported in several studies triggering plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, yet, the effects of Se on coffee plants under chilling stress are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of foliar Se application on coffee seedlings submitted to chilling stress and subsequent plant recovery. Two Coffea species, Coffea arabica cv. Arara, and Coffea canephora clone 31, were submitted to foliar application of sodium selenate solution (0.4 mg plant^-1) or a control foliar solution, then on day 2 plants were submitted to low temperature (10°C day/4°C night) for 2 days. After that, the temperature was restored to optimal (25°C day/20°C night) for 2 days. Leaf samples were collected three times (before, during, and after the chilling stress) to perform analyses. After the chilling stress, visual leaf injury was observed in both species; however, the damage was twofold higher in C. canephora. The lower effect of cold on C. arabica was correlated to the increase in ascorbate peroxidase and higher content of starch, sucrose, and total soluble sugars compared with C. canephora, as well as a reduction in reducing sugars and proline content during the stress and rewarming. Se increased the nitrogen and sulfur content before stress but reduced their content during low temperature. The reduced content of nitrogen and sulfur during stress indicates that they were remobilized to stem and roots. Se supply reduced the damage in C. canephora leaves by 24% compared with the control. However, there was no evidence of the Se effects on antioxidant enzymatic pathways or ROS activity during stress as previously reported in the literature. Se increased the content of catalase during the rewarming. Se foliar supply also increased starch, amino acids, and proline, which may have reduced symptom expression in C. canephora in response to low temperature. In conclusion, Se foliar application can be used as a strategy to improve coffee tolerance under low-temperature changing nutrient remobilization, carbohydrate metabolism, and catalase activity in response to rewarming stress, but C. arabica and C. canephora respond differently to chilling stress and Se supply.
