Abstract
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are the main interventional treatments for coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Both procedures are constantly being perfected and developed. This study aims to analyze the evolution of intervention mortality rates of PCI and CABG in recent years in Spain. We use a database of all hospital discharges from CABG and PCI procedures in Spain during two periods, between the years 2010 to 2012 and 2016 to 2019. We elaborate two multivariate regression logistic models to test the differences in mortality between the two periods and the two procedures, adjusting the mortality rates by age, gender, and comorbidities. We find strong evidence that CABG significantly reduced mortality rates, especially in complex patients, while PCI remained almost constant. We also discuss how physicians incorporate the improvement in procedures' performance into the decision-making for the recommendation of these two procedures in CAD patient management.

Abstract
The influence of acute glycemic variability (GV) on early outcomes of patients after cardiac surgery remains not fully determined. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between acute GV and in-hospital outcomes of patients after cardiac surgery. Relevant observational studies were obtained by search of electronic databases including Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. A randomized-effects model was selected to pool the data by incorporating the influence of potential heterogeneity. Nine cohort studies involving 16 411 patients after cardiac surgery were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled results showed that a high acute GV was associated with an increased risk of major adverse events (MAE) during hospitalization for patients after cardiac surgery [odds ratio [OR]: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.45, p<0.001, I22=38%]. Sensitivity analysis limited to studies of on-pump surgery and GV evaluated by coefficient of variation of blood glucose showed similar results. Subgroup analysis suggested that a high acute GV was related to an increased incidence of MAE in patients after coronary artery bypass graft, but not for those after isolated valvular surgery (p=0.04), and the association was weakened after adjustment of glycosylated hemoglobin (p=0.01). Moreover, a high acute GV was also related to an increased risk of in-hospital mortality (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.15 to 2.09, p=0.004; I22=0%). A high acute GV may be associated with poor in-hospital outcomes in patients after cardiac surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a rapidly growing disorder worldwide, especially in the Middle East. A higher incidence of coronary artery diseases requiring coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery has been reported in patients with diabetes. We assessed the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and in-hospital major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) and postoperative complications among patients who underwent on-pump isolated CABG. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, we used the data registered for CABG patients from two heart centers in the Golestan province (North of Iran) between 2007 and 2016. The study population included 1956 patients divided into two groups: 1062 non-diabetic patients and 894 patients with diabetes (fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dl or using antidiabetic medications). The study outcome was in-hospital MACCEs, a composite outcome of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke and cardiovascular death, and postoperative complications, including postoperative arrhythmia, acute atrial fibrillation (AF), major bleeding (defined as reoperation due to bleeding), and acute kidney injury (AKI). RESULTS During the 10-year study period, 1956 adult patients with a mean (SD) age of 59.0 (9.60) years were included. After adjustment for age, gender, ethnicity, obesity, opium consumption, and smoking, diabetes was a predictor of postoperative arrhythmia (AOR 1.30, 95% CI 1.08-1.57; P = 0.006). While it was not a predictor of in-hospital MACCEs (AOR 1.35, 95% CI 0.86, 2.11; P = 0.188), AF (AOR 0.85, 95% CI 0.60-1.19; P = 0.340), major bleeding (AOR 0.80, 95% CI 0.50, 1.30; P = 0.636) or AKI (AOR 1.29, 95% CI 0.42, 3.96; P 0.656) after CABG surgery. CONCLUSION Findings indicated that diabetes increased the risk of postoperative arrhythmia by 30%. However, we found similar in-hospital MACCEs, acute AF, major bleeding, and AKI following CABG surgery in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

Abstract
Aim. To study the effect of enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) on the functional status, quality of life, structural and functional state of the vascular bed, and markers of glycemic control in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).Material and methods. A pilot prospective randomized study included 30 patients with CAD and DM. Using a random number generator, patients were randomized into 2 groups: EECP (n=15) and a comparison group (n=15). All patients (n=30) received optimal medical therapy (OMT) during 3 months of follow-up. Patients in the EECP group underwent a course of EECP (35 hours, cuff pressure: 220-280 mmHg) during the first 7 weeks of the study. At baseline and after 3 months of follow-up, patients in both groups underwent an assessment of clinical status, quality of life (based on the SF-36 questionnaire), as well as a 6-minute walk test to assess exercise tolerance. The dynamics of fasting glucose, postprandial glucose, insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) and glycated hemoglobin were assessed. Photoplethysmography and applanation tonometry were performed to assess the state of the vascular bed.Results. In the EECP group, after 3 months, there was a decrease in the frequency of angina attacks and an improvement in the functional class of angina according to the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) classification. A significant improvement in exercise tolerance was revealed [an increase in the 6-minute walking distance by 51 (35; 65) m, p<0.05], as well as an improvement in the physical and mental components of health according to the SF-36 questionnaire. A positive dynamics was shown in relation to the indicators of the state of both large vessels and the microvasculature (p>0.05), with the exception of the reflection index and the stiffness index (p<0.05). There was also a significant decrease in the HOMA-IR [-9.9% (-26.5; -4.0) vs 7.7% (-7.9; 13.8), p=0.004], as well as in the levels of fasting glucose [-10.5% (-15.8; -4.0) vs -2.7 (-8.3; 5.9), p=0.012] in the EECP group, compared with the OMT group.Conclusion. EECP course therapy in addition to OMT has a positive effect on the functional status and quality of life of patients with CAD and DM. After 3 months of observation, there was noted a positive dynamics of the vascular state, as well as markers of glycemic control, and these changes were more pronounced in the EECP group. The results obtained may indicate the effectiveness of EECP as an add-on treatment for this group of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important risk factor in the long-term outcomes of surgical revascularization. However, few studies have focused on patients with ischemic heart failure (IHF) and DM, and the results are controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of DM on the long-term outcomes of IHF patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS In this propensity-matched study, data of IHF patients who underwent CABG in our hospital from January 2007 to December 2017 were analyzed. With a mean 73-month follow-up time, the patients were divided into two groups according to whether they had DM. The primary endpoint was all-cause death, and the secondary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death, stroke, recurrent myocardial infarction, and revascularization. RESULTS There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality between the two groups (5.8% vs. 4.1%, P = 0.216). The incidence of main adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in the secondary endpoint was significantly higher in the DM group than that in the non-DM group (10.4% vs. 8.1%, P = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS DM can negatively affect the long-term outcomes of IHF patients undergoing CABG by significantly increasing the overall incidence of MACCE, though the long-term survival does not show a significant difference between the DM and non-DM patients.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to determine the effect of preoperative aspirin administration on early and long-term clinical outcomes in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus (DM) undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods In this observational study, a total of 315 patients were included and grouped according to the time interval between their last aspirin dose and the time of surgery; patients who had been continued aspirin intake with last administered dose ≤ 24-hours before CABG (n=144) and those who had been given the last dose of aspirin between 24 to 48 hours before CABG (n=171). Results Multivariable analysis showed that the continuation of preoperative aspirin intake ≤ 24 hours before CABG in patients with DM is associated with reduced incidence of 30-day major adverse cardiac and cerebral events (MACCE) (P=0.004) as well as reduced incidence of composite 30-day mortality/MACCE (P=0.012). During mean follow-up of 37±17.5 months, the unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) showed that aspirin ≤ 24 hours prior CABG in patients with DM significantly reduced the incidence of MACCE and composite of mortality/MACCE during follow-up (HR: 0.50; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.29-0.87; P=0.014 and HR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.38-0.97; P=0.039, respectively). However, after propensity score (PS) matching, the PS-adjusted HR showed a non-significant trend towards the reduction of MACCE during follow-up (HR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.31-1.06; P=0.081). Conclusion Continuation of preoperative aspirin intake ≤ 24 hours before CABG in patients with DM is associated with reduced incidence of early MACCE, but without significant influence on long-term outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our aim was to investigate the outcome of patients with diabetes undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery in a whole population with main focus on long-term mortality and complications. METHODS This was a nationwide retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent isolated primary CABG in Iceland between 2001 and 2016. Overall survival together with the composite end point of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events was compared between patients with diabetes and patients without diabetes during a median follow-up of 8.5 years. Multivariable regression analyses were used to evaluate the impact of diabetes on both short- and long-term outcomes. RESULTS Of a total of 2060 patients, 356 (17%) patients had diabetes. Patients with diabetes had a higher body mass index (29.9 vs 27.9 kg/m2) and more often had hypertension (83% vs 62%) and chronic kidney disease (estimated glomerular filtration rate ≤60 ml/min/1.73 m2, 21% vs 14%). Patients with diabetes had an increased risk of operative mortality [odds ratio 2.52, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.27-4.80] when adjusted for confounders. 5-Year overall survival (85% vs 91%, P < 0.001) and 5-year freedom from major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events were also inferior for patients with diabetes (77% vs 82%, P < 0.001). Cox regression analysis adjusting for potential confounders showed that the diagnosis of diabetes significantly predicted all-cause mortality [hazard ratio (HR) 1.87, 95% CI 1.53-2.29] and increased risk of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (HR 1.47, 95% CI 1.23-1.75). CONCLUSIONS Patients with diabetes have significantly lower survival after CABG, both within 30 days and during long-term follow-up.

Acute myocardial infarction-cardiogenic shock in patients with prior coronary artery bypass grafting: A 16-year national cohort analysis of temporal trends, management and outcomes. Abstract
BACKGROUND There are limited data on the outcomes of acute myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock (AMI-CS) in patients with prior coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS A retrospective cohort of AMI-CS admissions during 2000-2016 from the National Inpatient Sample was created and prior CABG status was identified. Outcomes of interest included in-hospital mortality and resource utilization in the two cohorts. Temporal trends of prevalence, in-hospital mortality, and cardiac procedures were evaluated. RESULTS In 513,288 AMI-CS admissions, prior CABG was performed in 22,832 (4.4%). Adjusted temporal trends showed a 2-fold increase in CS in both cohorts. There was a temporal increase in coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) across both cohorts. The cohort with prior CABG was on average older, of male sex, of white race, and with higher comorbidity. The cohort with prior CABG received coronary angiography (50% vs. 75%), PCI (32% vs. 49%), right heart catheterization/pulmonary artery catheterization (15% vs. 20%), mechanical circulatory support (26% vs. 46%) less frequently compared to those without (all p < 0.001). The cohort with CABG had higher in-hospital mortality (53% vs. 37%; adjusted odds ratio 1.41 [95% confidence interval 1.36-1.46]), greater use of do not resuscitate status (13% vs. 6%), shorter lengths of hospital stay (7 ± 8 vs. 10 ± 12 days), lower hospitalization costs ($92,346 ± 139,565 vs. 138,508 ± 172,895) and fewer discharges to home (39% vs. 43%) (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS In AMI-CS, admission with prior CABG was older and had lower use of cardiac procedures and higher in-hospital mortality compared to those without prior CABG.

Three separate, systematic literature searches identified 2,343 papers in total. Overall, 44 studies were included for data extraction and analysis. The included systematic reviews and meta-analyses published between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2017, were of good to very good quality (median Overview Quality Assessment Questionnaire score = 17). Identified evidence suggests that cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention services should consider regulation of blood glucose as a key target for intervention. Furthermore, the recommendations for effective intervention and service development/training described here for prevention of CVD should be adopted into evidence-based practice guidelines. Multidisciplinary teams should be formed to deliver multicomponent interventions in community-based settings. There may be substantial opportunities for integrating CVD and diabetes prevention services.

Abstract
Background Coronary artery bypass grafting is known to be associated with better outcome in ischemic heart disease patients with low ejection fraction. We aim to demonstrate the effect of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on left ventricle (LV) systolic function and to identify the predictors that adversely lead to postoperative poor outcome. Result This is a cross-sectional prospective study; we included 110 patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 50% who underwent CABG with a mean age of 56.1 ± 12.2 years old. Those patients were classified into two groups: group I, 76 (69%) patients with LVEF > 35%, and group II, 34 (31%) patients with LVEF < 35%. Our results as regards demographic and clinical data revealed that group II patients had a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and Euro SCORE II compared to group I patients (p = 0.05 and < 0.001 respectively); otherwise, all other clinical predictors did not differ between the two studied groups. There was a significant improvement in LVEF post-surgery (p = 0.05) in both groups with observed no significant difference recorded for in-hospital mortality rate among patients with different groups. DM, significant diastolic dysfunction, and insertion of IABP are predictors of in-hospital mortality of the patients (p = 0.001, 0.03 and < 0.001, respectively) Conclusion We concluded that there is a significant improvement of LV systolic function after CABG and hence better survival rate. DM, significant diastolic dysfunction, and perioperative insertion of IABP are predictors of mortality after cardiac surgery. Special care should be provided to such patients to improve their outcome

Abstract
This study compared the effects of flaxseed and fish oil supplementation on cardiovascular risk parameters in diabetic patients with coronary heart disease. Participants were randomly allocated into three intervention groups to receive either 1,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil or 1,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed oil or placebo (n = 30 each group) twice a day for 12 weeks. A significant reduction in insulin levels (.04) was observed following flaxseed oil and fish oil supplementation compared with the placebo. In addition, a significant reduction in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (.02) was seen after flaxseed oil supplementation compared with the placebo and a significant increase in total nitrite (.001) was seen after flaxseed oil and fish oil intake compared with placebo. Additionally, a significant increase in total antioxidant capacity (p < .001) after consuming flaxseed oil and fish oil compared with placebo and glutathione levels (.001) after consuming fish oil compared with flaxseed oil and placebo was observed. Overall, our study revealed the beneficial effects of flaxseed oil and fish oil supplementation on few metabolic profiles. This study suggests that the effect of flaxseed oil in reducing insulin and increasing total nitrite and total antioxidant capacity is similar to fish oil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND According to several studies in population of high-income countries (HIC), patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) have a considerably higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, it is not clear if the magnitude of this association can be widespread in other populations. The objective of this study was to determine the independent association between Type 2 DM and first cardiovascular event in Colombian Caribbean poor population with no records of previous cardiovascular events reported. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the individual records from the hospitalizations database of 64,668 patients of cardiovascular risk management program from July 2014 to December 2015. We used a propensity score matching cohort analysis for this study. The Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed for the cardiovascular events related endpoints and matched Cox-regression analysis to estimate associations of a history of Type 2 DM with cardiovascular outcomes during 1.5 years of follow-up. A formal sensitivity analysis using The Breslow-Day and Tarone Homogeneity tests was conducted. RESULTS Out of 56,351 patients with no previous cardiovascular events records, 19,368 (34.4%) patients were found to suffer Type 2 DM. Using propensity scores for Type 2 DM, we gathered a cohort of 18,449 pairs of patients with and without Type 2 DM who were balanced on 22 baseline characteristics. A first cardiovascular event occurred in 650 (3.5%) and 403 (2.1%) matched patients with and without Type 2 DM, respectively, during 1.5 years of follow-up. Type 2 DM was associated with first cardiovascular event (HR 1.69; 95% CI 1.43-2.00; p = 0.000), AMI (HR 1.79; 95% CI 1.45-2.20; p = 0.000) and stroke (HR 1.54; 95% CI 1.18-2.02; p = 0.001). Hazard ratios (95% CIs) for the association of Type 2 DM with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality and all-cause hospitalization were 1.36 (1.21-1.53; p < 0.001), 1.52 (1.12-2.08; p 0.004), and 1.20 (1.21-1.53; p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION Type 2 DM resulted to be a significant independent risk factor for first cardiovascular event in Colombian Caribbean poor population with no previous records of cardiovascular events.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing worldwide, and it is associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). For T2DM patients, the main surgical intervention for CAD is autologous saphenous vein grafting. However, T2DM patients have increased risk of saphenous vein graft failure (SVGF). While the mechanisms underlying increased risk of vascular disease in T2DM are not fully understood, hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinaemia have been shown to contribute to microvascular damage, whereas clinical trials have reported limited effects of intensive glycaemic control in the management of macrovascular complications. This suggests that factors other than glucose exposure may be responsible for the macrovascular complications observed in T2DM. SVGF is characterised by neointimal hyperplasia (NIH) arising from endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction and uncontrolled migration and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs). This is driven in part by proinflammatory cytokines released from the activated ECs and SMCs, particularly interleukin 6 (IL-6). IL-6 stimulation of the Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT) pathway is a key mechanism through which EC inflammation, SMC migration, and proliferation are controlled and whose activation might therefore be enhanced in patients with T2DM. In this review, we investigate how proinflammatory cytokines, particularly IL-6, contribute to vascular damage resulting in SVGF and how suppression of proinflammatory cytokine responses via targeting the JAK/STAT pathway could be exploited as a potential therapeutic strategy. These include the targeting of suppressor of cytokine signalling (SOCS3), which appears to play a key role in suppressing unwanted vascular inflammation, SMC migration, and proliferation.

Abstract
Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a frequent co-morbidity among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of DM on the early- and long-term outcomes of patients who underwent isolated CABG. Methods We performed an observational cohort study in a large tertiary medical center over a period of 11 years. All data from patients who had undergone isolated CABG surgery between 2004 and 2014 were obtained from our departmental database. The study population included 2766 patients who were divided into two groups: Group I (1553 non-diabetic patients), and Group II (1213 patients suffering from type 2 DM). Group II patients were then divided into two subgroups: subgroup IIA (981 patients treated with oral antihyperglycemic medications) and subgroup IIB (232 insulin-treated patients with or without additional oral antihyperglycemic drugs). In-hospital, 1-, 3-, 5- and 10-year mortality outcome variables were evaluated. Mean follow-up was 97 ± 41 months. Results In-hospital mortality was similar between Group I and Group II patients (1.87% vs. 2.31%, p = 0.422) and between the subgroups IIA and IIB (2.14% vs. 3.02%, p = 0.464). Long-term mortality (1, 3, 5 and 10 years) was higher in Group II (DM type 2) compared with Group I (non-diabetic patients) (5.3% vs. 3.6%, p = 0.038; 9.3% vs. 5.6%, p < 0.001; 15.3% vs. 9.3%, p < 0.001 and 47.3% vs. 29.6% p < 0.001). Kaplan–Meier analysis demonstrated that all-cause mortality was higher in Group II compared with Group I (p < 0.001) and in subgroup IIB compared with subgroup IIA (p = 0.001). Multivariable analysis showed that DM increased the mortality hazard by twofold, and among diabetic patients, insulin treatment increased the mortality hazard by twofold. Conclusions Diabetic and non-diabetic patients have similar in-hospital mortality rates. Survival rates of diabetic patients start to deteriorate 3 year after surgery. Type 2 DM is an independent predictor for long-term mortality after isolated CABG surgery. Mortality is even higher when the diabetes treatment strategy included insulin. Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited data exist on factors predicting prolonged survival in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients. We sought to identify patient characteristics and complications associated with prolonged survival. METHODS We conducted retrospective review of the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) database, including primary continuous-flow LVAD recipients, between May 2012 and March 2013. Patients were identified as having survived with a device in place after 3 years or not, conditional on having initially survived 6 months. Patients who received a transplant, underwent explant due to recovery, or were lost to follow-up before 3 years were excluded. Multivariate logistic regression evaluated perioperative factors and adverse events within 6 months associated with long survival. RESULTS Of 1,116 patients who survived past the initial 6 months, 725 (65%) survived beyond 3 years. On univariate analysis, long-term survivors were significantly younger, were less likely to be white, supported for destination therapy, have diabetes, solid-organ cancer, or take amiodarone. On multivariate analysis, factors associated with increased odds of death at 3 years included diabetes, amiodarone use, and developing stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemolysis, or pump thrombosis within 6 months of implantation. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative diabetes and amiodarone use were associated with poor long-term survival in LVAD recipients. Development of early complications of stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemolysis, or pump thrombosis was also associated with poor long-term survival. Early diagnosis and treatment of these complications may improve survival in LVAD recipients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Melatonin may benefit diabetic people with coronary heart disease (CHD) through its beneficial effects on biomarkers of oxidative stress and cardio-metabolic risk. This investigation evaluated the effects of melatonin administration on metabolic status in diabetic patients with CHD. METHODS This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted and involved 60 diabetic patients with CHD. Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups to receive either 10 mg melatonin (2 melatonin capsules, 5 mg each) (n = 30) or placebo (n = 30) once a day for 12 weeks. RESULTS Compared with the placebo, melatonin supplementation resulted in significant increases in plasma glutathione (GSH) (+64.7 ± 105.7 vs. -11.1 ± 137.6 μmol/L, P = 0.02) and nitric oxide (NO) (+0.9 ± 4.7 vs. -3.3 ± 9.6 μmol/L, P = 0.03), and significant decreases in malondialdehyde (MDA) (-0.2 ± 0.3 vs. +0.1 ± 0.5 μmol/L, P = 0.007), protein carbonyl (PCO) (-0.12 ± 0.08 vs. +0.03 ± 0.07 mmol/mg protein, P < 0.001) and serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels (-1463.3 ± 2153.8 vs. +122.9 ± 1230.4 ng/mL, P = 0.001). In addition, taking melatonin, compared with the placebo, significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose (-29.4 ± 49.0 vs. -5.5 ± 32.4 mg/dL, P = 0.03), serum insulin concentrations (-2.2 ± 4.1 vs. +0.7 ± 4.2 μIU/mL, P = 0.008), homeostasis model of assessment-estimated insulin resistance (-1.0 ± 2.2 vs. +0.01 ± 1.6, P = 0.04), total-/HDL-cholesterol ratio (-0.18 ± 0.38 vs. +0.03 ± 0.35, P = 0.02) and systolic (-4.3 ± 9.6 vs. +1.0 ± 7.5 mmHg, P = 0.01) and diastolic blood pressure (-2.8 ± 7.3 vs. +0.1 ± 3.6 mmHg, P = 0.04). Melatonin treatment also significantly increased quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (+0.006 ± 0.01 vs. -0.004 ± 0.01, P = 0.01) and serum HDL-cholesterol (+2.6 ± 5.5 vs. -0.01 ± 4.4 mg/dL, P = 0.04). Supplementation with melatonin had no significant effect on other metabolic parameters. CONCLUSIONS Overall, melatonin intake for 12 weeks to diabetic patients with CHD had beneficial effects on plasma GSH, NO, MDA, PCO, serum hs-CRP levels, glycemic control, HDL-cholesterol, total-/HDL-cholesterol ratio, blood pressures and parameters of mental health.
