Abstract
The "reemergence of pertussis" has elicited international concerns, occurring paradoxically amidst the expansion of immunization programs. This study was aimed to evaluate quantitatively the economic burden and identify the determinants that influence the cost associated with treating pertussis in Chinese children. We evaluated the economic burden by Chinese children diagnosed with pertussis at the Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine in 2022. Direct medical expenses and the utilization of medical resources attributed to pertussis were calculated. A generalized linear regression model was applied to analyze the determinants that were associated with the direct medical expenses among patients. Among the 1110 pertussis patients included in the study, 1060 were outpatients and 50 were inpatients. The average direct medical cost was ¥1878.70(i.e. $279.33). Living in urban areas (OR:1.27, p = .04), complications (OR:1.40, p < .001), hospitalization (OR:10.04, p < .001), and ≥ 3 medical visits (OR:3.71, p < .001) were associated with increased direct medical expenses. Having received four doses of the pertussis vaccine was associated with reduced direct medical expenses (OR:0.81, p = .04). This study underscores a substantial economic burden of pertussis in Hangzhou, with pronounced implications for patients residing in urban areas, experiencing complications, requiring hospitalization, having multiple medical consultations, or lacking comprehensive pertussis vaccination.

Abstract
Bordetella pertussis is a bacterial pathogen responsible for pertussis, which is a highly contagious respiratory disease. Despite the relatively high vaccination coverage, pertussis is considered a reemerging disease that necessitates enhanced strategies for identification, prevention, and control. The diagnosis of pertussis typically involves a combination of clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and a thorough medical history. The current technologies for pertussis diagnosis have their own limitations, prompting the exploration of alternative diagnostic approaches that offer enhanced sensitivity, specificity, and speed. Microfluidic technology is considered a very promising tool for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, as it offers more rapid and accurate outputs. It allows point-of-care testing (POCT) at or near the patient site, which can be critical, especially for an outbreak or pandemic. In this paper, current pertussis diagnostic tools with their limitations were discussed, and microfluidic approaches for the diagnosis of pertussis were highlighted.

Abstract
Filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) is a critical adhesion molecule produced by Bordetella pertussis (BP), the causative agent of highly contagious respiratory infection known as whooping cough. FHA plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of whooping cough and is a key component of acellular pertussis vaccines (aPV). However, conventional purification methods for FHA often involve labor-intensive processes and result in low purity and recovery rates. Therefore, this study explores the use of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies as specific tools to achieve highly pure and efficient FHA purification. To generate FHA-specific antibodies, polyclonal antibodies were produced by immunizing sheep and monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were generated by immunizing mice with recombinant and native FHA. The MAbs were selected based on affinity, isotypes, and specificity, which were assessed through ELISA and Western blot assays. Two immunoaffinity columns, one monoclonal and one polyclonal, were prepared for FHA antigen purification. The purity and recovery rates of these purifications were determined using ELISA, SDS-PAGE, and immunoblotting. Furthermore, the MAbs were employed to develop an ELISA assay for FHA antigen concentration determination. The study's findings revealed that immunoaffinity column-based purification of FHA resulted in a highly pure antigen with recovery rates of approximately 57% ± 6.5% and 59% ± 7.9% for monoclonal and polyclonal columns, respectively. Additionally, the developed ELISA exhibited appropriate reactivity for determining FHA antigen concentration. This research demonstrates that affinity chromatography is a viable and advantageous method for purifying FHA, offering superior purity and recovery rates compared to traditional techniques. This approach provides a practical alternative for FHA purification in the context of aPV development.

Abstract
Respiratory infectious diseases have long been recognised as a substantial global healthcare burden and are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, particularly in vulnerable individuals. In the post COVID-19 era, there has been a surge in the prevalence of influenza virus A and other multiple known viruses causing cold compared with during the same period in the previous three years, which coincided with countries easing COVID-19 restrictions worldwide. This article aims to review community-acquired respiratory illnesses covering a broad spectrum of viruses, bacteria, and atypical microorganisms and focuses on the cluster prevalence of multiple known respiratory pathogens in China, thereby providing effective prevention and control measures.

Abstract
Clinically manifested resistance of bacteria to antibiotics has emerged as a global threat to society and there is an urgent need for the development of novel classes of antibacterial agents. Recently, the use of phosphorus in antibacterial agents has been explored in quite an unprecedent manner. In this comprehensive review, we summarize the use of phosphorus-containing moieties (phosphonates, phosphonamidates, phosphonopeptides, phosphates, phosphoramidates, phosphinates, phosphine oxides, and phosphoniums) in compounds with antibacterial effect, including their use as β-lactamase inhibitors and antibacterial disinfectants. We show that phosphorus-containing moieties can serve as novel pharmacophores, bioisosteres, and prodrugs to modify pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties. We further discuss the mechanisms of action, biological activities, clinical use and highlight possible future prospects.
