Tunable metallicity of the La5/8Ca3/8MnO3(001) surface by an oxygen overlayer

Ferroelectricity promoted by cation/anion divacancies in SrMnO3

We investigate the effect of polar Sr-O vacancy pairs on the electric polarization of SrMnO3 (SMO) thin films using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This is motivated by indications that ferroelectricity in complex oxides can be engineered by epitaxial strain but also via the defect chemistry. Our results suggest that intrinsic doping by cation and anion divacancies can induce a local polarization in unstrained non-polar SMO thin films and that a ferroelectric state can be stabilized below the critical strain of the stoichiometric material. This polarity is promoted by the electric dipole associated with the defect pair and its coupling to the atomic relaxations upon defect formation that polarize a region around the defect. This suggests that polar defect pairs affect the strain-dependent ferroelectricity in semiconducting antiferromagnetic SMO. For metallic ferromagnetic SMO we find a much weaker coupling between the defect dipole and the polarization due to much stronger electronic screening. Coupling of defect-pair dipoles at high enough concentrations along with their switchable orientation thus makes them a promising route to affect the ferroelectric transition in complex transition metal oxide thin films.

Real-Space Imaging of Orbital Selectivity on SrTiO3(001) Surface

Real-space access of the orbital degree of freedom in complex oxides is still challenging due to intricate electronic hybridization. Here, we report a direct observation of reproducible orbital-selective tunneling on a novel SrTiO₃(001) surface by scanning tunneling microscopy. The electronic structures reversibly switch between two different sets of symmetries depending on the sample bias, which is accompanied by a remarkable change in energy-dependent spectroscopy data. Tunneling spectrum combined with density functional theory calculations elucidates that symmetry-breaking at the surface determines the crystal-splitting field of e_g/t_2g orbitals with a strong in-plane anisotropy so that electrons alternatingly fill e_g and t_2g orbitals during the imaging process with different biases. This surface superstructure provides a new strategy toward understanding orbital textures and orbital selectivity in complex oxides.

Observing a previously hidden structural-phase transition onset through heteroepitaxial cap response

Characterization of the onset of a phase transition is often challenging due to the fluctuations of the correlation length scales of the order parameters. This is especially true for second-order structural-phase transition due to minute changes involved in the relevant lattice constants. A classic example is the cubic-to-tetragonal second-order phase transition in SrTiO₃ (STO), which is so subtle that it is still unresolved. Here, we demonstrate an approach to resolve this issue by epitaxially grown rhombohedral La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO₃ (LSMO) thin films on the cubic STO (100) substrate. The shear strain induced nanotwinning waves in the LSMO film are extremely sensitive to the cubic-to-tetragonal structural-phase transitions of the STO substrate. Upon cooling from room temperature, the development of the nanotwinning waves is spatially inhomogeneous. Untwinned, atomically flat domains, ranging in size from 100 to 300 nm, start to appear randomly in the twinned phase between 265 and 175 K. At ∼139 K, the untwinned, atomically flat domains start to grow rapidly into micrometer scale and finally become dominant at ∼108 K. These results indicate that the low-temperature tetragonal precursor phase of STO has already nucleated at 265 K, significantly higher than the critical temperature of STO (∼105 K). Our work paves a pathway to visualize the onset stages of structural-phase transitions that are too subtle to be observed using direct-imaging methods.

Learning from Imperfections: Predicting Structure and Thermodynamics from Atomic Imaging of Fluctuations

In materials characterization, traditionally a single experimental sample is used to derive information about a single point in the composition space, while the imperfections, impurities, and stochastic details of material structure are deemed irrelevant or complicating factors in the analysis. Here we demonstrate that atomic-scale studies of a single nominal composition can provide information about microstructures and thermodynamic response over a finite area of chemical space. Using the principles of statistical inference, we develop a framework for incorporating structural fluctuations into statistical mechanical models and use it to solve the inverse problem of deriving effective interatomic interactions responsible for elemental segregation in a La_5/8Ca_3/8MnO₃ thin film. The results are further analyzed by a variational autoencoder to detect anomalous behavior in the composition phase diagram. This study provides a framework for creating generative models from a combination of multiple experimental data and provides direct insight into the driving forces for cation segregation in manganites.

Quasiparticle Interference on Cubic Perovskite Oxide Surfaces

We report the observation of coherent surface states on cubic perovskite oxide SrVO_{3}(001) thin films through spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy. A direct link between the observed quasiparticle interference patterns and the formation of a d_{xy}-derived surface state is supported by first-principles calculations. We show that the apical oxygens on the topmost VO_{2} plane play a critical role in controlling the coherent surface state via modulating orbital state.

Surface Control of Epitaxial Manganite Films via Oxygen Pressure

The trend to reduce device dimensions demands increasing attention to atomic-scale details of structure of thin films as well as to pathways to control it. This is of special importance in the systems with multiple competing interactions. We have used in situ scanning tunneling microscopy to image surfaces of La5/8Ca3/8MnO3 films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The atomically resolved imaging was combined with in situ angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find a strong effect of the background oxygen pressure during deposition on structural and chemical features of the film surface. Deposition at 50 mTorr of O2 leads to mixed-terminated film surfaces, with B-site (MnO2) termination being structurally imperfect at the atomic scale. A relatively small reduction of the oxygen pressure to 20 mTorr results in a dramatic change of the surface structure leading to a nearly perfectly ordered B-site terminated surface with only a small fraction of A-site (La,Ca)O termination. This is accompanied, however, by surface roughening at a mesoscopic length scale. The results suggest that oxygen has a strong link to the adatom mobility during growth. The effect of the oxygen pressure on dopant surface segregation is also pronounced: Ca surface segregation is decreased with oxygen pressure reduction.

Visualization of a ferromagnetic metallic edge state in manganite strips

Recently, broken symmetry effect induced edge states in two-dimensional electronic systems have attracted great attention. However, whether edge states may exist in strongly correlated oxides is not yet known. In this work, using perovskite manganites as prototype systems, we demonstrate that edge states do exist in strongly correlated oxides. Distinct appearance of ferromagnetic metallic phase is observed along the edge of manganite strips by magnetic force microscopy. The edge states have strong influence on the transport properties of the strips, leading to higher metal-insulator transition temperatures and lower resistivity in narrower strips. Model calculations show that the edge states are associated with the broken symmetry effect of the antiferromagnetic charge-ordered states in manganites. Besides providing a new understanding of the broken symmetry effect in complex oxides, our discoveries indicate that novel edge state physics may exist in strongly correlated oxides beyond the current two-dimensional electronic systems.

Nanostructured platforms for the sustained and local delivery of antibiotics in the treatment of osteomyelitis

This article provides a critical view of the current state of the development of nanoparticulate and other solid-state carriers for the local delivery of antibiotics in the treatment of osteomyelitis. Mentioned are the downsides of traditional means for treating bone infection, which involve systemic administration of antibiotics and surgical debridement, along with the rather imperfect local delivery options currently available in the clinic. Envisaged are more sophisticated carriers for the local and sustained delivery of antimicrobials, including bioresorbable polymeric, collagenous, liquid crystalline, and bioglass- and nanotube-based carriers, as well as those composed of calcium phosphate, the mineral component of bone and teeth. A special emphasis is placed on composite multifunctional antibiotic carriers of a nanoparticulate nature and on their ability to induce osteogenesis of hard tissues demineralized due to disease. An ideal carrier of this type would prevent the long-term, repetitive, and systemic administration of antibiotics and either minimize or completely eliminate the need for surgical debridement of necrotic tissue. Potential problems faced by even hypothetically "perfect" antibiotic delivery vehicles are mentioned too, including (i) intracellular bacterial colonies involved in recurrent, chronic osteomyelitis; (ii) the need for mechanical and release properties to be adjusted to the area of surgical placement; (iii) different environments in which in vitro and in vivo testings are carried out; (iv) unpredictable synergies between drug delivery system components; and (v) experimental sensitivity issues entailing the increasing subtlety of the design of nanoplatforms for the controlled delivery of therapeutics.

Controlled mechnical modification of manganite surface with nanoscale resolution

We investigated the surfaces of magnetoresistive manganites, La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 and La(2-2x)Sr(1+2x)Mn2O7, using a combination of ultrahigh vacuum conductive, electrostatic and magnetic force microscopy methods. Scanning as-grown film with a metal tip, even with zero applied bias, was found to modify the surface electronic properties such that in subsequent scans, the conductivity is reduced below the noise level of conductive probe microscopy. Scanned areas also reveal a reduced contact potential difference relative to the pristine surface by ∼0.3 eV. We propose that contact-pressure of the tip modifies the electrochemical potential of oxygen vacancies via the Vegard effect, causing vacancy motion and concomitant changes of the electronic properties.

High chemical activity of a perovskite surface: reaction of CO with Sr(3)Ru(2)O(7)

Adsorption of CO at the Sr(3)Ru(2)O(7)(001) surface was studied with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory. In situ cleaved single crystals terminate in an almost perfect SrO surface. At 78 K, CO first populates impurities and then adsorbs above the apical surface O with a binding energy E(ads)=-0.7  eV. Above 100 K, this physisorbed CO replaces the surface O, forming a bent CO(2) with the C end bound to the Ru underneath. The resulting metal carboxylate (Ru-COO) can be desorbed by STM manipulation. A low activation (0.2 eV) and high binding (-2.2  eV) energy confirm a strong reaction between CO and regular surface sites of Sr(3)Ru(2)O(7); likely, this reaction causes the "UHV aging effect" reported for this and other perovskite oxides.

Chemically induced Jahn-Teller ordering on manganite surfaces

Physical and electrochemical phenomena at the surfaces of transition metal oxides and their coupling to local functionality remains one of the enigmas of condensed matter physics. Understanding the emergent physical phenomena at surfaces requires the capability to probe the local composition, map order parameter fields and establish their coupling to electronic properties. Here we demonstrate that measuring the sub-30-pm displacements of atoms from high-symmetry positions in the atomically resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy allows the physical order parameter fields to be visualized in real space on the single-atom level. Here, this local crystallographic analysis is applied to the in-situ-grown manganite surfaces. In particular, using direct bond-angle mapping we report direct observation of structural domains on manganite surfaces, and trace their origin to surface-chemistry-induced stabilization of ordered Jahn-Teller displacements. Density functional calculations provide insight into the intriguing interplay between the various degrees of freedom now resolved on the atomic level.

A persistent metal-insulator transition at the surface of an oxygen-deficient, epitaxial manganite film

The oxygen stoichiometry has a large influence on the physical and chemical properties of complex oxides. Most of the functionality in e.g. catalysis and electrochemistry depends in particular on control of the oxygen stoichiometry. In order to understand the fundamental properties of intrinsic surfaces of oxygen-deficient complex oxides, we report on in situ temperature dependent scanning tunnelling spectroscopy experiments on pristine oxygen deficient, epitaxial manganite films. Although these films are insulating in subsequent ex situ in-plane electronic transport experiments at all temperatures, in situ scanning tunnelling spectroscopic data reveal that the surface of these films exhibits a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 120 K, coincident with the onset of ferromagnetic ordering of small clusters in the bulk of the oxygen-deficient film. The surprising proximity of the surface MIT transition temperature of nonstoichiometric films with that of the fully oxygenated bulk suggests that the electronic properties in the surface region are not significantly affected by oxygen deficiency in the bulk. This carries important implications for the understanding and functional design of complex oxides and their interfaces with specific electronic properties in catalysis, oxide electronics and electrochemistry.

Local crystallography analysis for atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy images

Scanning probe microscopy has emerged as a powerful and flexible tool for atomically resolved imaging of surface structures. However, due to the amount of information extracted, in many cases the interpretation of such data is limited to being qualitative and semi-quantitative in nature. At the same time, much can be learned from local atom parameters, such as distances and angles, that can be analyzed and interpreted as variations of local chemical bonding, or order parameter fields. Here, we demonstrate an iterative algorithm for indexing and determining atomic positions that allows the analysis of inhomogeneous surfaces. This approach is further illustrated by local crystallographic analysis of several real surfaces, including highly ordered pyrolytic graphite and an Fe-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. This study provides a new pathway to extract and quantify local properties for scanning probe microscopy images.

Oxygen control of atomic structure and physical properties of SrRuO3 surfaces

Complex oxide thin films and heterostructures have become one of the foci for condensed matter physics research due to a broad variety of properties they exhibit. Similar to the bulk, properties of oxide surfaces can be expected to be strongly affected by oxygen stoichiometry. Here we explore the coupling between atomic structure and physical properties of SrRuO3 (SRO), one of the most well-studied oxide materials. We perform a detailed in situ and ex situ experimental investigation of the surfaces of SRO thin films using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and magnetotransport measurements, as well as ab initio modeling. A number of remarkable linear surface reconstructions were observed by STM and interpreted as oxygen adatoms, favorably adsorbed in a regular rectangular or zigzag patterns. The degree of oxygen coverage and different surface patterns change the work function of the thin films, and modify local electronic and magnetic properties of the topmost atomic layer. The ab initio modeling reveals that oxygen adatoms possess frustrated local spin moments with possible spin-glass behavior of the surface covered by adsorbed oxygen. Additionally, the modeling indicates presence of a pseudo gap on the topmost SrO layer on pristine SrO-terminated surface, suggesting possibility for realization of a surface half-metallic film.

Substrate and thickness effects on the oxygen surface exchange of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 thin films

Substrate- and thickness-related effects on the oxygen surface exchange of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO(3) (LSM) thin films were investigated to understand better cathode reactivity in solid oxide fuel cells. Epitaxial (100)-oriented LSM films were fabricated on (100)-SrTiO(3) and (110)-NdGaO(3) substrates and were characterized using electrical conductivity relaxation. A strong substrate effect on the chemical surface exchange coefficient (k(chem)) was observed, with a higher k(chem) found for films on SrTiO(3) than those on NdGaO(3). Two distinct activation energies (E(a)) were observed for k(chem), which were assigned to two parallel exchange processes; the relative contributions from each depended on the substrate, film thickness, and temperature. For films coherently strained to the substrates, k(chem) values differed by almost an order of magnitude, whereas E(a) was ∼1.5 (± 0.1) eV on both substrates. For relaxed films, k(chem) values differed only by a factor of 2, and E(a) was ∼0.75 (± 0.1) eV on both substrates. We discuss the strain effect relative to the native surface exchange and the thickness effect relative to the extended defect populations in the films. The outcome of this study sheds light on how microstructural features affect surface chemistry in modified cathodes.

Atomic-scale visualization of initial growth of homoepitaxial SrTiO₃ thin film on an atomically ordered substrate

The initial homoepitaxial growth of SrTiO(3) on a (√13 × √13)-R33.7° SrTiO(3)(001) substrate surface, which can be prepared under oxide growth conditions, is atomically resolved by scanning tunneling microscopy. The identical (√13 × √13) atomic structure is clearly visualized on the deposited SrTiO(3) film surface as well as on the substrate. This result indicates the transfer of the topmost Ti-rich (√13 × √13) structure to the film surface and atomic-scale coherent epitaxy at the film/substrate interface. Such atomically ordered SrTiO(3) substrates can be applied to the fabrication of atom-by-atom controlled oxide epitaxial films and heterostructures.

Surface electronic structure transitions at high temperature on perovskite oxides: the case of strained La0.8Sr0.2CoO3 thin films

In-depth probing of the surface electronic structure on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes, considering the effects of high temperature, oxygen pressure, and material strain state, is essential toward advancing our understanding of the oxygen reduction activity on them. Here, we report the surface structure, chemical state, and electronic structure of a model transition metal perovskite oxide system, strained La(0.8)Sr(0.2)CoO(3) (LSC) thin films, as a function of temperature up to 450 °C in oxygen partial pressure of 10(-3) mbar. Both the tensile and the compressively strained LSC film surfaces transition from a semiconducting state with an energy gap of 0.8-1.5 eV at room temperature to a metallic-like state with no energy gap at 200-300 °C, as identified by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The tensile strained LSC surface exhibits a more enhanced electronic density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level following this transition, indicating a more highly active surface for electron transfer in oxygen reduction. The transition to the metallic-like state and the relatively more enhanced DOS on the tensile strained LSC at elevated temperatures result from the formation of oxygen vacancy defects, as supported by both our X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. The reversibility of the semiconducting-to-metallic transitions of the electronic structure discovered here, coupled to the strain state and temperature, underscores the necessity of in situ investigations on SOFC cathode material surfaces.

Imaging oxygen defects and their motion at a manganite surface

Manganites are technologically important materials, used widely as solid oxide fuel cell cathodes; they have also been shown to exhibit electroresistance. Oxygen bulk diffusion and surface exchange processes are critical for catalytic action, and numerous studies of manganites have linked electroresistance to electrochemical oxygen migration. Direct imaging of individual oxygen defects is needed to underpin understanding of these important processes. Currently, it is not possible to collect the required images in bulk, but scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) could provide such data for surfaces. Here, we report the first atomic resolution images of oxygen defects at a manganite surface. Our experiments also reveal defect dynamics, including oxygen adatom migration, vacancy-adatom recombination and adatom bistability. Beyond providing an experimental basis for testing models describing the microscopics of oxygen migration at transition-metal oxide interfaces, our work resolves the long-standing puzzle of why STM is more challenging for layered manganites than for cuprates.
