Flow-Induced Surface Charge Heterogeneity in Electrokinetics due to Stern-Layer Conductance Coupled to Reaction Kinetics

Pure Water Splitting Driven by Overlapping Electric Double Layers

In pursuit of a sustainable future powered by renewable energy, hydrogen production through water splitting should achieve high energy efficiency with economical materials. Here, we present a nanofluidic electrolyzer that leverages overlapping cathode and anode electric double layers (EDLs) to drive the splitting of pure water. Convective flow is introduced between the nanogap electrodes to suppress the crossover of generated gases. The strong electric field within the overlapping EDLs enhances ion migration and facilitates the dissociation of water molecules. Acidic and basic environments, which are created in situ at the cathode and anode, respectively, enable the use of nonprecious metal catalysts. All these merits allow the reactor to exhibit a current density of 2.8 A·cm-2 at 1.7 V with a nickel anode. This paves the way toward a new type of water electrolyzer that needs no membrane, no supporting electrolyte, and no precious metal catalysts.

Coulombic Surface-Ion Interactions Induce Nonlinear and Chemistry-Specific Charging Kinetics

While important for many industrial applications, chemical reactions responsible for the charging of solids in water are often poorly understood. We theoretically investigate the charging kinetics of solid-liquid interfaces and find that the time-dependent equilibration of surface charge contains key information not only on the reaction mechanism, but also on the valency of the reacting ions. We construct a nonlinear differential equation describing surface charging by combining chemical Langmuir kinetics and electrostatic Poisson-Boltzmann theory. Our results reveal a clear distinction between late-time (near-equilibrium) and short-time (far-from-equilibrium) relaxation rates, the ratio of which contains information on the charge valency and ad- or desorption mechanism of the charging process. Similarly, we find that single-ion reactions can be distinguished from two-ion reactions, as the latter show an inflection point during equilibration. Interestingly, such inflection points are characteristic of autocatalytic reactions, and we conclude that the Coulombic ion-surface interaction is an autocatalytic feedback mechanism.

Long-term memory and synapse-like dynamics in two-dimensional nanofluidic channels

Fine-tuned ion transport across nanoscale pores is key to many biological processes, including neurotransmission. Recent advances have enabled the confinement of water and ions to two dimensions, unveiling transport properties inaccessible at larger scales and triggering hopes of reproducing the ionic machinery of biological systems. Here we report experiments demonstrating the emergence of memory in the transport of aqueous electrolytes across (sub)nanoscale channels. We unveil two types of nanofluidic memristors depending on channel material and confinement, with memory ranging from minutes to hours. We explain how large time scales could emerge from interfacial processes such as ionic self-assembly or surface adsorption. Such behavior allowed us to implement Hebbian learning with nanofluidic systems. This result lays the foundation for biomimetic computations on aqueous electrolytic chips.

Thermodynamics of Charge Regulation during Ion Transport through Silica Nanochannels

Ion-surface interactions can alter the properties of nanopores and dictate nanofluidic transport in engineered and biological systems central to the water-energy nexus. The ion adsorption process, known as "charge regulation", is ion-specific and is dependent on the extent of confinement when the electric double layers (EDLs) between two charged surfaces overlap. A fundamental understanding of the mechanisms behind charge regulation remains lacking. Herein, we study the thermodynamics of charge regulation reactions in 20 nm SiO₂ channels via conductance measurements at various concentrations and temperatures. The effective activation energies (E_a) for ion conductance at low concentrations (strong EDL overlap) are ∼2-fold higher than at high concentrations (no EDL overlap) for the electrolytes studied here: LiCl, NaCl, KCl, and CsCl. We find that E_a values measured at high concentrations result from the temperature dependence of viscosity and its influence on ion mobility, whereas E_a values measured at low concentrations result from the combined effects of ion mobility and the enthalpy of cation adsorption to the charged surface. Notably, the E_a for surface reactions increases from 7.03 kJ mol^-1 for NaCl to 16.72 ± 0.48 kJ mol^-1 for KCl, corresponding to a difference in surface charge of -8.2 to -0.8 mC m^-2, respectively. We construct a charge regulation model to rationalize the cation-specific charge regulation behavior based on an adsorption equilibrium. Our findings show that temperature- and concentration-dependent conductance measurements can help indirectly probe the ion-surface interactions that govern transport and colloidal interactions at the nanoscale─representing a critical step forward in our understanding of charge regulation and adsorption phenomena under nanoconfinement.

Electrochemical Methods for Water Purification, Ion Separations, and Energy Conversion

Agricultural development, extensive industrialization, and rapid growth of the global population have inadvertently been accompanied by environmental pollution. Water pollution is exacerbated by the decreasing ability of traditional treatment methods to comply with tightening environmental standards. This review provides a comprehensive description of the principles and applications of electrochemical methods for water purification, ion separations, and energy conversion. Electrochemical methods have attractive features such as compact size, chemical selectivity, broad applicability, and reduced generation of secondary waste. Perhaps the greatest advantage of electrochemical methods, however, is that they remove contaminants directly from the water, while other technologies extract the water from the contaminants, which enables efficient removal of trace pollutants. The review begins with an overview of conventional electrochemical methods, which drive chemical or physical transformations via Faradaic reactions at electrodes, and proceeds to a detailed examination of the two primary mechanisms by which contaminants are separated in nondestructive electrochemical processes, namely electrokinetics and electrosorption. In these sections, special attention is given to emerging methods, such as shock electrodialysis and Faradaic electrosorption. Given the importance of generating clean, renewable energy, which may sometimes be combined with water purification, the review also discusses inverse methods of electrochemical energy conversion based on reverse electrosorption, electrowetting, and electrokinetic phenomena. The review concludes with a discussion of technology comparisons, remaining challenges, and potential innovations for the field such as process intensification and technoeconomic optimization.

Understanding the Electric Double-Layer Structure, Capacitance, and Charging Dynamics

Significant progress has been made in recent years in theoretical modeling of the electric double layer (EDL), a key concept in electrochemistry important for energy storage, electrocatalysis, and multitudes of other technological applications. However, major challenges remain in understanding the microscopic details of the electrochemical interface and charging mechanisms under realistic conditions. This review delves into theoretical methods to describe the equilibrium and dynamic responses of the EDL structure and capacitance for electrochemical systems commonly deployed for capacitive energy storage. Special emphasis is given to recent advances that intend to capture the nonclassical EDL behavior such as oscillatory ion distributions, polarization of nonmetallic electrodes, charge transfer, and various forms of phase transitions in the micropores of electrodes interfacing with an organic electrolyte or ionic liquid. This comprehensive analysis highlights theoretical insights into predictable relationships between materials characteristics and electrochemical performance and offers a perspective on opportunities for further development toward rational design and optimization of electrochemical systems.

Surface Protolysis and Its Kinetics Impact the Electrical Double Layer

Surface conductivity in the electrical double layer (EDL) is known to be affected by proton hopping and diffusion at solid-liquid interfaces. Yet, the role of surface protolysis and its kinetics on the thermodynamic and transport properties of the EDL are usually ignored as physical models consider static surfaces. Here, using a novel molecular dynamics method mimicking surface protolysis, we unveil the impact of such chemical events on the system's response. Protolysis is found to strongly affect the EDL and electrokinetic aspects with major changes in ζ potential and electro-osmotic flow.

Flow effects on the surface properties of surfactant foam films

The surface electrostatic properties of liquid foam, involving the electrokinetic (EK) phenomena in the liquid-gas interface, have significant effects on the stability of the foam. Here, we established a theoretical model for ion transport in liquid films by combining the liquid flow and surface reaction. We found that the surface electrostatic properties of liquid foams were influenced unexpectedly by the pressure-induced flow. The liquid flow will induce the potential and concentration differences in the flow direction. When the pressure drop increases to a certain high value, the induced potential and salt concentration difference increases, leading to the change of the surface electrostatic properties such as zeta potential and the surface charge density. This change shows that the surface electrostatic properties of foam films depend on the coupling of various factors including ion distribution and pressure drop, which deepens our understanding of the electrostatic properties of the foam films.

Anomalous interfacial dynamics of single proton charges in binary aqueous solutions

Our understanding of the dynamics of charge transfer between solid surfaces and liquid electrolytes has been hampered by the difficulties in obtaining interface, charge, and solvent-specific information at both high spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we measure at the single charge scale the dynamics of protons at the interface between an hBN crystal and binary mixtures of water and organic amphiphilic solvents (alcohols and acetone), evidencing a marked influence of solvation on interfacial dynamics. Applying single-molecule localization microscopy to emissive crystal defects, we observe correlated activation between adjacent ionizable surface defects, mediated by the transport of single excess protons along the solid/liquid interface. Solvent content has a nontrivial effect on interfacial dynamics, leading at intermediate water fraction to an increased surface diffusivity, as well as an increased affinity of the proton charges to the solid surface. Our measurements evidence the notable role of solvation on interfacial proton charge transport.

Real-time tracking of ionic nano-domains under shear flow

The behaviour of ions at solid-liquid interfaces underpins countless phenomena, from the conduction of nervous impulses to charge transfer in solar cells. In most cases, ions do not operate as isolated entities, but in conjunction with neighbouring ions and the surrounding solution. In aqueous solutions, recent studies suggest the existence of group dynamics through water-mediated clusters but results allowing direct tracking of ionic domains with atomic precision are scarce. Here, we use high-speed atomic force microscopy to track the evolution of Rb⁺, K⁺, Na⁺ and Ca²⁺ nano-domains containing 20 to 120 ions adsorbed at the surface of mica in aqueous solution. The interface is exposed to a shear flow able to influence the lateral motion of single ions and clusters. The results show that, when in groups, metal ions tend to move with a relatively slow dynamics, as can be expected from a correlated group motion, with an average residence timescale of ~ 1-2 s for individual ions at a given atomic site. The average group velocity of the clusters depends on the ions' charge density and can be explained by the ion's hydration state. The lateral shear flow of the fluid is insufficient to desorb ions, but indirectly influences the diffusion dynamics by acting on ions in close vicinity to the surface. The results provide insights into the dynamics of ion clusters when adsorbed onto an immersed solid under shear flow.

Electrification of water interface

The surface charge of a water interface determines many fundamental processes in physical chemistry and interface science, and it has been intensively studied for over a hundred years. We summarize experimental methods to characterize the surface charge densities developed so far: electrokinetics, double-layer force measurements, potentiometric titration, surface-sensitive nonlinear spectroscopy, and surface-sensitive mass spectrometry. Then, we elucidate physical ion adsorption and chemical electrification as examples of electrification mechanisms. In the end, novel effects on surface electrification are discussed in detail. We believe that this clear overview of state of the art in a charged water interface will surely help the fundamental progress of physics and chemistry at interfaces in the future.

Liquid flow reversibly creates a macroscopic surface charge gradient

The charging and dissolution of mineral surfaces in contact with flowing liquids are ubiquitous in nature, as most minerals in water spontaneously acquire charge and dissolve. Mineral dissolution has been studied extensively under equilibrium conditions, even though non-equilibrium phenomena are pervasive and substantially affect the mineral-water interface. Here we demonstrate using interface-specific spectroscopy that liquid flow along a calcium fluoride surface creates a reversible spatial charge gradient, with decreasing surface charge downstream of the flow. The surface charge gradient can be quantitatively accounted for by a reaction-diffusion-advection model, which reveals that the charge gradient results from a delicate interplay between diffusion, advection, dissolution, and desorption/adsorption. The underlying mechanism is expected to be valid for a wide variety of systems, including groundwater flows in nature and microfluidic systems.

Reactions at the interface between mineral surfaces and flowing liquids are ubiquitous in nature. Here the authors explore, using surface-specific sum frequency generation spectroscopy and numeric calculations, how the liquid flow affects the charging and dissolution rates leading to flow-dependent charge gradients along the surface.

Electrokinetic-Driven Fast Ion Delivery for Reversible Aqueous Zinc Metal Batteries with High Capacity

Aqueous zinc (Zn) metal batteries (ZMBs) are considered a promising candidate for grid-scale energy storage due to their freedom from fire hazards. However, a limited reversibility of Zn metal electrode caused by dendritic Zn growth has hindered the advent of high-capacity Zn metal batteries (>4 mAh cm^-2 ). Herein, it is reported that fast electrokinetic Zn-ion transport extremely improves the Zn metal reversibility. It is revealed that a negatively charged porous layer (NPL) provides the electrokinetic Zn-ion transport by surface conduction, and consequently impedes the depletion of Zn-ion on electrode surface as indicated by numerical simulations and overlimiting current behavior. Due to the quick Zn-ion delivery, a dendrite-free and densely packed Zn metal deposit is accommodated inside its pores. With the introduction of the NPL, the cycling stability of Zn symmetric cell is enhanced by 21 times at 10 mA cm^-2 /10 mAh cm^-2 . Average Coulombic efficiency of 99.6% is achieved over 500 cycles for electrodeposition/stripping at 30 mA cm^-2 /5 mAh cm^-2 on NPL-Cu electrode. Furthermore, a high-capacity Zn/V₂ O₅ full cell with the NPL exhibits an extraordinary stability over 1000 cycles at a capacity of 4.8 mAh cm^-2 .

2D-Molybdenum Disulfide-Derived Ion Source for Mass Spectrometry

Generation of current or potential at nanostructures using appropriate stimuli is one of the futuristic methods of energy generation. We developed an ambient soft ionization method for mass spectrometry using 2D-MoS₂, termed streaming ionization, which eliminates the use of traditional energy sources needed for ion formation. The ionic dissociation-induced electrokinetic effect at the liquid-solid interface is the reason for energy generation. We report the highest figure of merit of current generation of 1.3 A/m² by flowing protic solvents at 22 μL/min over a 1 × 1 mm² surface coated with 2D-MoS₂, which is adequate to produce continuous ionization of an array of analytes, making mass spectrometry possible. Weakly bound ion clusters and uric acid in urine have been detected. Further, the methodology was used as a self-energized breath alcohol sensor capable of detecting 3% alcohol in the breath.

Topological-Defect-Induced Surface Charge Heterogeneities in Nematic Electrolytes

We show that topological defects in an ion-doped nematic liquid crystal can be used to manipulate the surface charge distribution on chemically homogeneous, charge-regulating external surfaces, using a minimal theoretical model. In particular, the location and type of the defect encodes the precise distribution of surface charges and the effect is enhanced when the liquid crystal is flexoelectric. We demonstrate the principle for patterned surfaces and charged colloidal spheres. More generally, our results indicate an interesting approach to control surface charges on external surfaces without changing the surface chemistry.

Coupled water, charge and salt transport in heterogeneous nano-fluidic systems

We theoretically study the electrokinetic transport properties of nano-fluidic devices under the influence of a pressure, voltage or salinity gradient. On a microscopic level the behaviour of the device is quantified by the Onsager matrix L, a generalised conductivity matrix relating the local driving forces and the induced volume, charge and salt flux. Extending L from a local to a global linear-response relation is trivial for homogeneous electrokinetic systems, but in this manuscript we derive a generalised conductivity matrix G from L that applies also to heterogeneous electrokinetic systems. This extension is especially important in the case of an imposed salinity gradient, which gives necessarily rise to heterogeneous devices. Within this formalism we can also incorporate a heterogeneous surface charge due to, for instance, a charge regulating boundary condition, which we show to have a significant impact on the resulting fluxes. The predictions of the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Stokes theory show good agreement with exact solutions of the governing equations determined using the finite element method under a wide variety of parameters. Having established the validity of the theory, it provides an accessible method to analyse electrokinetic systems in general without the need of extensive numerical methods. As an example, we analyse a reverse electrodialysis "blue energy" system, and analyse how the many parameters that characterise such a system affect the generated electrical power and efficiency.

Theoretical and Numerical Study of Formation of Near-Electrode Layers in Ionic Conductor Liquids at High Voltages

A novel approach is developed to predict the thickness of the equivalent one-dimensional Stern layer near conducting electrodes subjected to high voltage and carrying electric current. The nonspecific (nonelectric) ion adsorption responsible for the formation of the Stern compact layer at the electrode surface is attributed to the Langmuir-Brunauer-Emmett-Teller mechanism. The compact Stern layer is implied to be intrinsically two-dimensional and forming on the oxide or impurity islands on the electrode surface, which prevents electron transfer to or from the adsorbed ions. On the other hand, electrons are transferred through the open parts of the metallic electrode surface by electron transfer faradaic reactions characterized by the Frumkin-Butler-Volmer kinetics. Then, the one-dimensional Stern layer appears to be an approximation of the abovementioned two-dimensional model. In the framework of this model, the equivalent one-dimensional Stern layer thickness is predicted, rather than used as an adjustable parameter, as frequently done in the literature.

Flow effects on silicate dissolution and ion transport at an aqueous interface

Flow effects on chemical reactions at a solid-liquid interface are fundamental to diverse technological applications but remain poorly understood from a molecular perspective. In this work, we demonstrate that the coupling between laminar flow and surface chemistry can be adequately described using classical density functional theory for ion distributions near the surface in conjunction with kinetics modeling and the Navier-Stokes equation. In good agreement with recent experiments, we find that flowing of fresh water over a silica surface may result in drastic changes in the rate of silica dissolution and, consequently, the surface charge density and the interfacial structure. A nonlinear streaming current is predicted when the surface reactions are disturbed by a laminar flow.

Interfacial transport with mobile surface charges and consequences for ionic transport in carbon nanotubes

In this paper, we explore the effect of a finite surface charge mobility on the interfacial transport: conductance, streaming currents, electro- and diffusio-osmotic flows. We first show that the surface charge mobility modifies the hydrodynamic boundary condition for the fluid, which introduces a supplementary term depending on the applied electric field. In particular, the resulting slip length is found to decrease inversely with the surface charge. We then derive expressions for the various transport mobilities, highlighting that the surface charge mobility merely moderates the amplification effect of interfacial slippage, to the noticeable exception of diffusio-osmosis and surface conductance. Our calculations, obtained within Poisson-Boltzmann framework, highlight the importance of non-linear electrostatic contributions to predict the small concentration/large charge limiting regimes for the transport mobilities. We discuss these predictions in the context of recent electrokinetic experiments with carbon nanotubes.
