Dewetting patterns and molecular forces: a reconciliation

Spatiotemporal mapping of nanotopography and thickness transitions of ultrathin foam films

Freshly formed soap films, soap bubbles, or foam films display iridescent colors due to thin film interference that changes as squeeze flow drives drainage and a progressive decrease in film thickness. Ultrathin (thickness <100 nm) freestanding films of soft matter containing micelles, particles, polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes, or other supramolecular structures or liquid crystalline phases display drainage via stratification. A fascinating array of thickness variations and transitions, including stepwise thinning and coexistence of thick-thin flat regions, arise in micellar foam films that undergo drainage via stratification. In this tutorial, we describe the IDIOM (interferometry digital imaging optical microscopy) protocols that combine the conventional interferometry principle with digital filtration and image analysis to obtain nanometer accuracy for thickness determination while having high spatial and temporal resolution. We provide fully executable image analysis codes and algorithms for the analysis of nanotopography and summarize some of the unique insights obtained for stratified micellar foam films.

Modes of Nanodroplet Formation and Growth on an Ultrathin Water Film

Using nanobubbles as geometrical confinements, we create a thin water film (∼10 nm) in a graphene liquid cell and investigate the evolution of its instability at the nanoscale under transmission electron microscopy. The breakdown of the water films, resulting in the subsequent formation and growth of nanodroplets, is visualized and generalized into different modes. We identified distinct droplet formation and growth modes by analyzing the dynamic processes involving 61 droplets and 110 liquid bridges within 31 Graphene Liquid Cells (GLCs). Droplet formation is influenced by their positions in GLCs, taking on a semicircular shape at the edge and a circular shape in the middle. Growth modes include liquid mass transfer driven by Plateau-Rayleigh instability and merging processes in and out-of-plane of the graphene interface. Droplet growth can lead to the formation of liquid bridges for which we obtain multiview projections. Data analysis reveals the general dynamics of liquid bridges, including drawing liquids from neighboring residual water films, merging with surrounding droplets, and merging with other liquid bridges. Our experimental observations provide insights into fluid transport at the nanoscale.

High-Temperature Melt Stamping of Polymers Using Polymer/Nanoporous Gold Composite Stamps

Parallel lithographic deposition of polymers onto counterpart substrates is a widely applied surface manufacturing operation. However, polymers may only be soluble in organic solvents or are insoluble at all. Solvent evaporation during stamping may trigger hardly controllable capillarity-driven flow processes or phase separation, and polymer solutions may spread on the counterpart substrates. Solvent-free stamping of melts prevents these drawbacks. Here, a stamp design for the deposition of melts is devised, which intrinsically circumvents ink depletion. The stamps' topographically patterned contact surfaces with protruding contact elements contacting the counterpart substrates consist of a nanoporous gold layer with a thickness of a few micrometers. The nanoporous gold layer is attached to a molten polymer layer, which is support for the nanoporous gold layer and ink reservoir at the same time. The nanoporous gold layer in turn stabilizes the topography of the stamps' contact surfaces. As examples, arrays of submicron microdots of polystyrene and poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) are manufactured. The P(VDF-TrFE) microdots are partially crystalline, ferroelectric, and can be locally poled. It is envisioned that the methodology reported here can be automatized and may be extended to functional low-molecular-mass compounds, such as active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Frequency-Dependent Dewetting of Thin Liquid Films Using External ac Electric Field

The stability of thin liquid films on a surface can be controlled by using external stimuli, such as an electric field, temperature, or light, by manipulating the total excess free energy of the system. It has been previously shown that thin lubricating films on slippery surfaces can be destabilized via the spinodal mechanism using an external electric field, which returns to the original stable configuration upon the electric field. However, the role of the frequency of the applied ac electric field is not clear, which is the main topic of study in this report. When an ac electric field of fixed voltage and varying frequency is applied across thin lubricating films of slippery surfaces, a different dewetting behavior is observed. Characteristic length and time scales of dewetting depend strongly on the frequency of the applied voltage, which is primarily due to the change in the dielectric behavior of the lubricating fluid. In addition, the interplay of various time scales involved in the dewetting process also depends on the frequency.

The formation mechanism of the precursor film in high temperature molten metal systems: insight into structural disjoining pressure

A precursor film is a unique microfluidic entity that arises at the liquid/solid interface. The formation mechanism of this entity in high-temperature systems is yet to be explained, mainly due to the limitations posed by the increased reaction at the solid/liquid interface. In this study, we investigate the formation process of the precursor film in high-temperature molten metal systems (Ag/Ni, Au/Ni, and Cu/Ni) using molecular dynamics simulations. The alloying energies for different alloying pairs were determined to extract the excess energy, which was found to be distributed from the interface to the upper liquid. The pattern of this energy distribution determines the shape of the near-surface liquid, including the precursor film. This relationship is further reflected by the structural disjoining pressure, which is the excess pressure exerted by the ordered microstructures within the wedge-shaped area of the droplet. Strong nonlinearity has been found in the structural disjoining pressure of Ag/Ni and Au/Ni systems, which is considered to be the main reason for the formation of the precursor film. The fluctuation of the dissolution rate is also reflected in the disjoining pressure, and the inhibition of dissolution on the precursor film formation is phenomenally clarified.

Soft landing of polyatomic anions onto three-dimensional semiconductive and conductive substrates

Soft landing of well-characterized polyoxometalate anions, PW₁₂O₄₀ ^3- (WPOM) and PMo₁₂O₄₀ ^3- (MoPOM), was carried out to explore the distribution of anions in the semiconducting 10 and 6 μm-long vertically aligned TiO₂ nanotubes as well as 300 μm-long conductive vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs). The distribution of soft-landed anions on the surfaces and their penetration into the nanotubes were studied using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We observe that soft landed anions generate microaggregates on the TiO₂ nanotubes and only reside in the top 1.5 μm of the nanotube height. Meanwhile, soft landed anions are uniformly distributed on top of VACNTs and penetrate into the top 40 μm of the sample. We propose that both the aggregation and limited penetration of POM anions into TiO₂ nanotubes is attributed to the lower conductivity of this substrate as compared to VACNTs. This study provides first insights into the controlled modification of three dimensional (3D) semiconductive and conductive interfaces using soft landing of mass-selected polyatomic ions, which is of interest to the rational design of 3D interfaces for electronics and energy applications.

Generalization of Young-Laplace, Kelvin, and Gibbs-Thomson equations for arbitrarily curved surfaces

The Young-Laplace, Kelvin, and Gibbs-Thomson equations form a cornerstone of colloidal and surface sciences and have found successful applications in many subfields of physics, chemistry, and biology. The Gibbs-Thomson effect, for example, predicts that small crystals are in equilibrium with their liquid melt at a lower temperature than large crystals and the positive interfacial energy increases the energy required to form small particles with a high curvature interface. In cases of liquids contained within porous media (confined geometry), the effect indicates decreasing the freezing/melting temperatures and the increment of the temperature is inversely proportional to the pore size. These phenomena can be reformulated for Gaussian maps of macromolecules and can be asked the following question: can one use the equations for predicting the melting temperature and shape of polymer chains in confined geometries? The answer is no, mainly because macromolecules form highly curved surfaces (Gaussian maps), and the equations hold only for simple geometries (sphere, plane, or cylinder). Here, we present general Young-Laplace, Kelvin, and Gibbs-Thomson equations for arbitrarily curved surfaces and apply them to predict temperature distribution on a few protein surfaces. Also, after increased interest toward liquid/liquid phase separation in biology, we derive generic Ostwald ripening and show that for shape-changing condensates, instead of a monotonic growing mechanism, a variety of processes are possible. Due to the generality of equations, we clarify that at appropriate internal/external pressure conditions systems, bounded by surfaces, may adopt any shape and thermal stability is strongly influenced by the geometries of confined spaces.

Coupling annealed silver nanoparticles with a porous silicon Bragg mirror SERS substrate and machine learning for rapid non-invasive disease diagnosis

Ag₂O-Ag-porous silicon Bragg mirror (PSB) composite SERS substrates were successfully synthesized by using a combination of electrochemical and thermochemical methods. Test results showed that the SERS signal increased and decreased as the annealing temperature used for the substrate increased, where the most intense SERS signal was obtained using a substrate annealed at 300 °C. Stability test results showed substantial enhancement of the SERS signal intensity of the Ag₂O-Ag-PSB composite one month after preparation compared with that of conventional Ag-PSB. We conclude that Ag₂O nanoshells play an essential role in SERS signal enhancement. Ag₂O prevents natural oxidation of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) and has a solid localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). SERS signal enhancement was tested using this substrate for serum from patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and Diabetic nephropathy (DN), as well as from healthy controls (HC). SERS feature extraction was performed using principal component analysis (PCA). The extracted features were analyzed by a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. Finally, a rapid screening model for SS and HC, as well as DN and HC, was developed and used to perform controlled experiments. The results showed that the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and selectivity for SERS technology combined with machine learning algorithms reached 90.7%, 93.4% and 86.7% for SS/HC and 89.3%, 95.6% and 80% for DN/HC, respectively. The results of this study show that the composite substrate has excellent potential to be developed into a commercially available SERS chip for medical testing.

Body Forces Drive the Apparent Line Tension of Sessile Droplets

The line tension of a three-phase contact line is implicated in a wide variety of interfacial phenomena, but there is ongoing controversy, with existing measurements spanning six orders of magnitude in both signs. Here, we show that computationally obtained magnitudes, sign changes, and nontrivial variations of apparent line tension can be faithfully reproduced in a parsimonious model that incorporates only liquid-substrate interactions. Our results suggest that the origin for the remarkable variation lies in the failure of a widely used estimation method to eliminate body forces, leading measured line tensions to behave like an extensive quantity.

Perspectives on weak interactions in complex materials at different length scales

Nanocomposite materials consist of nanometer-sized quantum objects such as atoms, molecules, voids or nanoparticles embedded in a host material. These quantum objects can be exploited as a super-structure, which can be designed to create material properties targeted for specific applications. For electromagnetism, such targeted properties include field enhancements around the bandgap of a semiconductor used for solar cells, directional decay in topological insulators, high kinetic inductance in superconducting circuits, and many more. Despite very different application areas, all of these properties are united by the common aim of exploiting collective interaction effects between quantum objects. The literature on the topic spreads over very many different disciplines and scientific communities. In this review, we present a cross-disciplinary overview of different approaches for the creation, analysis and theoretical description of nanocomposites with applications related to electromagnetic properties.

New Insights into Spin Coating of Polymer Thin Films in Both Wetting and Nonwetting Regimes

Spin coating is a common method for fabricating polymer thin films on flat substrates. The well-established Meyerhofer relationship between film thickness (h) and spin rate (ω), h ∝ ω^-1/2, enables the preparation of thin films with desired thickness by adjusting the spin rate and other experimental parameters. The 1/2 exponent has been verified by previous studies involving organic thin films prepared on silicon wafers. In this study, 88% and >99% hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) polymers were adsorbed and spin-coated from an aqueous solution onto four different substrates. The substrates were prepared by covalently attaching poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) of different molecular weights onto silicon wafers (SiO₂). Atomic force microscopy images indicate that the PVOH films transitioned from stable on SiO₂, to metastable, and then to unstable as PDMS molecular weight was increased. Notably, none of the polymer-substrate systems studied here exhibited the thickness-spin rate profile predicted by the Meyerhofer model. Based on the experimental results, a more general adsorption-deposition model is proposed that decouples the total spin-coated thickness into two components─the adsorbed thickness (h₁) and the spin-deposited thickness (h₂). The former accounts for polymer-substrate interactions, and the latter depends on polymer concentration and spin rate. In unstable systems, the exponents were found to be ∼0 because slip takes place at the solution-substrate interface during spin and the spin-deposited thickness is 0. In metastable and stable systems, a universal relationship between spin-deposited thickness and spin rate emerged, independent of the substrate type and polymer concentration for each polymer examined. Our findings indicate the importance of film stability and polymer-substrate interactions in the application of spin coating.

Puncture of a Viscous Liquid Film Due to Droplet Falling

Droplet impact may rupture a liquid film on a non-wettable surface. The formation of a stable dry spot has only been studied in the inviscid case. Here, we examine the break-up of viscous films, and demonstrate the importance and role of the viscous dissipation in both film and droplet. A new model was therefore proposed to predict the necessary droplet energy to create a dry spot. It also showed that the dissipation contribution in film dominates when the ratio of the thicknesses to drop diameter is larger than 7/4.

Correlative image learning of chemo-mechanics in phase-transforming solids

Constitutive laws underlie most physical processes in nature. However, learning such equations in heterogeneous solids (for example, due to phase separation) is challenging. One such relationship is between composition and eigenstrain, which governs the chemo-mechanical expansion in solids. Here we developed a generalizable, physically constrained image-learning framework to algorithmically learn the chemo-mechanical constitutive law at the nanoscale from correlative four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray spectro-ptychography images. We demonstrated this approach on Li_XFePO₄, a technologically relevant battery positive electrode material. We uncovered the functional form of the composition-eigenstrain relation in this two-phase binary solid across the entire composition range (0 ≤ X ≤ 1), including inside the thermodynamically unstable miscibility gap. The learned relation directly validates Vegard's law of linear response at the nanoscale. Our physics-constrained data-driven approach directly visualizes the residual strain field (by removing the compositional and coherency strain), which is otherwise impossible to quantify. Heterogeneities in the residual strain arise from misfit dislocations and were independently verified by X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. Our work provides the means to simultaneously quantify chemical expansion, coherency strain and dislocations in battery electrodes, which has implications on rate capabilities and lifetime. Broadly, this work also highlights the potential of integrating correlative microscopy and image learning for extracting material properties and physics.

Interfacial Selective Study on the Gelation Behavior of Aqueous Methylcellulose Solution via a Quartz Crystal Microbalance

It is important to understand the interfacial structure and physical properties of a polymer material to improve its function. In this study, we used a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements to evaluate the viscoelasticity and structure of an aqueous methylcellulose solution near the gold interface. The apparent shear modulus, which was calculated from the complex frequency, was used to assess gelation behavior. The apparent shear modulus determined via the QCM suggested high-frequency rheological properties that reflected the relaxation of skeletal stretching and rotational motion of polymer segments, as well as cooperative motion of the various functional groups. The gelation temperature was found to be lowered at the interface in comparison with that of the bulk. It is suggested that the QCM can evaluate the shear modulus accompanying the gelation near the interface. The interfacial segregation on the gold substrate caused by the surface free energy and long-range van der Waals interaction was observed from NR measurements.

Observation of Interfacial Instability of an Ultrathin Water Film

We observed the instability of a few-nanometer-thick water film encapsulated inside a graphene nanoscroll using transmission electron microscopy. The film, that was left after recession of a meniscus, formed ripples along the length of the nanoscroll with a distance only 20%-44% of that predicted by the classical Plateau-Rayleigh instability theory. The results were explained by a theoretical analysis that incorporates the effect of the van der Waals interactions between the water film and the graphene layers. We derived important insights into the behavior of liquid under nanoscale confinement and in nanofluidic systems.

Spinodal de-wetting of light liquids on graphene

We demonstrate theoretically the possibility of spinodal de-wetting in heterostructures made of light-atom liquids (hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen) deposited on suspended graphene. Extending our theory of film growth on two-dimensional (2D) materials to include analysis of surface instabilities via the hydrodynamic Cahn-Hilliard-type equation, we characterize in detail the spatial and temporal scales of the resulting spinodal de-wetting patterns. Both linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations of the surface hydrodynamics show micron-sized (generally material dependent) patterns of 'dry' regions. The physical reason for the development of such instabilities on graphene can be traced back to the inherently weak van der Waals interactions between atomically thin materials and atoms in the liquid. Thus 2D materials could represent a new theoretical and technological platform for studies of spinodal de-wetting.

Gold Nanoparticles Generated Using the Nanosecond Laser Treatment of Multilayer Films and Their Use for SERS Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates fabricated using a repeated laser treatment of thin gold films are demonstrated. The presented SERS substrates consist of the gold nanoparticles, whose density and size depend on the used film thickness and number of treated films. The larger number of the treated gold film layers increases the amount of larger nanoparticles (size >20 nm). However, a large number of small nanoparticles (5-20 nm) in all cases is also observed. The manufactured SERS substrates exhibit a high enhancement factor, which is in the range of 10⁶. The enhancement factor can be increased by adding an additional Au coating on the top of nanoparticles generated from a single gold layer. The demonstrated laser-based fabrication approach of large-scale SERS substrates is simple, reliable, without the use of chemicals for the reduction and stabilization of nanoparticles, and cost-effective.

Fabrication of Cu(II) oxide-hydroxide nanostructures onto graphene paper by laser and thermal processes for sensitive nano-electrochemical sensing of glucose

Glucose electrochemical sensors based on nanostructures of CuO/Cu(OH)₂onto graphene paper were prepared by thermal (solid) and nanosecond pulsed laser (molten phase) dewetting of a CuO layer 6 nm thin deposited by sputtering. Dewetted systems, obtained without the use of any binder, act as array of nanoelectrodes. Solid state and molten phase dewetting produce nanostructures of copper oxide-hydroxide with different average size, shape and surface composition. Molten phase dewetting originates particles with size below 100 nm, while solid state dewetting produces particles with average size of about 200 nm. Moreover, molten phase dewetting produce drop-shaped nanostructures, conversely nanostructures derived from solid state dewetting are multifaceted. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization revealed that the surface of nanostructures is formed by a copper(II) species CuO and Cu(OH)₂. Shape of anodic branch of the cyclic voltammograms of glucose in alkali solution evidenced a convergent diffusion mechanism. Analytical performances in amperometric mode are as good as or better than other sensors based on copper oxide. Amperometric detection of glucose was done at potential as low as 0.4 V versus saturated calomel electrode by both types of electrodes. Linear range from 50μM to 10 mM, sensitivity ranging from 7 to 43μA cm^-2mM^-1and detection limit of 7μM was obtained. Good analytical performances were obtained by laser dewetted electrodes with a low copper content up to 1.2 by atoms percentage of the surface. Analytical performance of the proposed electrodes is compliant for the determination of glucose both in blood serum, saliva or tear.

Dewetting of non-polar thin lubricating films underneath polar liquid drops on slippery surfaces

HYPOTHESIS

The stability of thin lubricating fluid-coated slippery surfaces depends on the surface energy of the underlying solid surface. High energy solid surfaces coated with thin lubricating oil lead to the dewetting of the oil films upon depositing aqueous drops on them. Hence such surfaces are very suitable to investigate dewetting of thick films (thickness > 500 nm), which otherwise is not possible using a conventional dewetting system.

EXPERIMENTS

Lubricating films of different thicknesses are coated on hydrophilic solid surfaces, and glycerol drops are deposited on them. Fluorescence imaging of lubricating films and macroscopic wetting behavior of glycerol drops are analyzed to understand the dewetting phenomenon.

FINDINGS

Underneath lubricating films undergo initial thinning and subsequently dewet. The dewetting dynamics during hole nucleation and growth and the final pattern of the dewetted oil droplets depend strongly on the thickness of the lubricating films. Ultrathin films dewet spontaneously via homogeneous nucleation, whereas thicker films dewet via heterogeneous nucleation. During dewetting, the apparent contact angle and radius of glycerol drops follow universal scaling behavior.

Solid-state polymer adsorption for surface modification: The role of molecular weight

HYPOTHESIS

Solid-state polymer adsorption offers a distinct approach for surface modification. These ultrathin, so-called Guiselin layers can easily be obtained by placing a polymer melt in contact with an interface, followed by a removal of the non-adsorbed layer with a good solvent. While the mechanism of formation has been well established for Guiselin layers, their stability, crucial from the perspective of materials applications, is not. The stability is a trade-off in the entropic penalty between cooperative detachment of the number of segments directly adsorbed on the substrate and consecutively pinned monomers.

EXPERIMENTS

Experimental model systems of Guiselin layers of polystyrene (PS) on silicon wafers with native oxide layer on top were employed. The stability of the adsorbed layers was studied as a function of PS molecular weight and polydispersibility by various microscopic and spectroscopic tools as well as quasi-static contact angle measurements.

FINDINGS

Adsorbed layers from low molecular weight PS were disrupted with typical spinodal decomposition patterns whereas high molecular weight (>500 kDa) PS resulted in stable, continuous layers. Moreover, we show that Guiselin layers offer an enticing way to modify a surface, as demonstrated by adsorbed PS that imparts a hydrophobic character to initially hydrophilic silicon wafers.

Beyond Langmuir: surface-bound macromolecule condensates

Macromolecule condensates, phase separation, and membraneless compartments have become an important area of cell biology research where new biophysical concepts are emerging. This article discusses the possibility that condensates assemble on multivalent surfaces such as DNA, microtubules, or lipid bilayers by multilayer adsorption. Langmuir isotherm theory conceptualized saturable surface binding and deeply influenced physical biochemistry. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory extended Langmuir’s ideas to multilayer adsorption. A BET-inspired biochemical model predicts that surface-binding proteins with a tendency to self-associate will form multilayered condensates on binding surfaces. These “bound condensates” are expected to assemble well below the saturation concentration for liquid–liquid phase separation, so they can compete subunits away from phase-separated droplets and are thermodynamically pinned to the binding surface. Tau binding to microtubules is an interesting test case. The nonsaturable binding isotherm is reminiscent of BET predictions, but assembly of Tau-rich domains at low concentrations requires a different model. Surface-bound condensates may find multiple biological uses, particularly in situations where it is important that condensate assembly is spatially constrained, such as gene regulation.

Achieving Stable Patterns in Multicomponent Polymer Thin Films Using Marangoni and van der Waals Forces

Liquid-air interfaces can be deformed by surface-tension gradients to create topography, a phenomenon useful for polymer film patterning. A recently developed method creates these gradients by photochemically patterning a solid polymer film. Heating the film to the liquid state leads to flow driven by the patterned surface-tension gradients, but capillary leveling and diffusion of surface-active species facilitate eventual dissipation of the topography. However, experiments demonstrate that using blends of high- and low-molar-mass polymers can considerably delay the decay in topography. To gain insight into this observation, we develop a model based on lubrication theory that yields coupled nonlinear partial differential equations describing how the film height and species concentrations evolve with time and space. Incorporation of a nonmonotonic disjoining pressure is found to significantly increase the lifetime of topographical features, making the model predictions qualitatively consistent with experiments. A parametric study reveals the key variables controlling the kinetics of film deformation and provides guidelines for photochemically induced Marangoni patterning of polymer films.

Combined specular and off-specular reflectometry: elucidating the complex structure of soft buried interfaces

Neutron specular reflectometry (SR) and off-specular scattering (OSS) are nondestructive techniques which, through deuteration, give a high contrast even among chemically identical species and are therefore highly suitable for investigations of soft-matter thin films. Through a combination of these two techniques, the former yielding a density profile in the direction normal to the sample surface and the latter yielding a depth-resolved in-plane lateral structure, one can obtain quite detailed information on buried morphology on length scales ranging from the order of ångströms to ∼10 µm. This is illustrated via quantitative evaluation of data on SR and OSS collected in time-of-flight (ToF) measurements of a set of films composed of immiscible polymer layers, protonated poly(methyl methacrylate) and deuterated polystyrene, undergoing a decomposition process upon annealing. Joint SR and OSS data analysis was performed by the use of a quick and robust originally developed algorithm including a common absolute-scale normalization of both types of scattering, which are intricately linked, constraining the model to a high degree. This, particularly, makes it possible to distinguish readily between different dewetting scenarios driven either by the nucleation and growth of defects (holes, protrusions etc.) or by thermal fluctuations in the buried interface between layers. Finally, the 2D OSS maps of particular cases are presented in different spaces and qualitative differences are explained, allowing also the qualitative differentiation of the in-plane structure of long-range order, the correlated roughness and bulk defects by a simple inspection of the scattering maps prior to quantitative fits.

Dynamics and Structure Formation of Confined Polymer Thin Films Supported on Solid Substrates

The stability/instability behavior of polystyrene (PS) films with tunable thickness ranging from higher as-cast to lower residual made on Si substrates with and without native oxide layer was studied in this paper. For further extraction of residual PS thin film (hresi) and to investigate the polymer-substrate interaction, Guiselin's method was used by decomposing the polymer thin films in different solvents. The solvents for removing loosely adsorbed chains and extracting the strongly adsorbed irreversible chains were selected based on their relative desorption energy difference with polymer. The PS thin films rinsed in chloroform with higher polarity than that of toluene showed a higher decrease in the residual film thickness but exhibited earlier growth of holes and dewetting in the film. The un-annealed samples with a higher oxide film thickness showed a higher decrease in the PS residual film thickness. The effective viscosity of PS thin films spin-coated on H-Si substrates increased because of more resistance to flow dynamics due to the stronger polymer-substrate interaction as compared to that of Si-SiOx substrates. By decreasing the film thickness, the overall effective mobility of the film increased and led to the decrease in the effective viscosity, with matching results of the film morphology from atomic force microscopy (AFM). The polymer film maintained low viscosity until a certain period of time, whereupon further annealing occurred, and the formation of holes in the film grew, which ultimately dewetted the film. The residual film decrement, growth of holes in the film, and dewetting of the polymer-confined thin film showed dependence on the effective viscosity, the strength of solvent used, and various involved interactions on the surface of substrates.

Designing antiviral surfaces to suppress the spread of COVID-19

Surface engineering is an emerging technology to design antiviral surfaces, especially in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is yet no general understanding of the rules and optimized conditions governing the virucidal properties of engineered surfaces. The understanding is crucial for designing antiviral surfaces. Previous studies reported that the drying time of a residual thin-film after the evaporation of a bulk respiratory droplet on a smooth surface correlates with the coronavirus survival time. Recently, we [Chatterjee et al., Phys. Fluids. 33, 021701 (2021)] showed that the evaporation is much faster on porous than impermeable surfaces, making the porous surfaces lesser susceptible to virus survival. The faster evaporation on porous surfaces was attributed to an enhanced disjoining pressure within the thin-film due the presence of horizontally oriented fibers and void spaces. Motivated by this, we explore herein the disjoining pressure-driven thin-film evaporation mechanism and thereby the virucidal properties of engineered surfaces with varied wettability and texture. A generic model is developed which agrees qualitatively well with the previous virus titer measurements on nanostructured surfaces. Thereafter, we design model surfaces and report the optimized conditions for roughness and wettability to achieve the most prominent virucidal effect. We have deciphered that the optimized thin-film lifetime can be gained by tailoring wettability and roughness, irrespective of the nature of texture geometry. The present study expands the applicability of the process and demonstrates ways to design antiviral surfaces, thereby aiding to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Polymer dewetting in solvent-non-solvent environment- new insights on dynamics and lithography-free patterning

HYPOTHESIS

We show that one may employ polymer dewetting in solvent-non-solvent environment to obtain lithography-free fabrication of well-defined nano- to micro- scale polymer droplets arrays from pre-patterned polymer films. The polymer droplet pattern may be converted to a series of hybrid organic-inorganic and inorganic well-defined nano-patterns by using sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS). In particular, we scrutinize the physical parameters which govern the dewetting of flat and striped polymer thin films, which is the key to obtaining our objective of lithography-free ordered nano-patterns.

EXPERIMENTS

We immerse polystyrene (PS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) thin films in water in the presence of chloroform vapors. We study the ensuing polymer dewetting dynamics and the pattern formation of nanospheres by employing in-situ light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. We then investigate pattern formation by dewetting of polymer stripes, fabricated by directed solvent evaporation, and SIS of AlO_x from vapor phase precursors, trimethyl aluminum (TMA) and H₂O, within the nanosphere patterns.

FINDINGS

We find that solvent- non-solvent environments render film dewetting rates, which are an order of magnitude faster than solvent vapor dewetting, and supports the formation of small solid polymer droplets, down to sub-100 nm droplet size, of large contact angles with the solid substrate. Pre-patterned polymer film stripes support the formation of highly ordered structures of polymer droplets, which are easily transformed to hybrid polymer-AlO_x nanosphere patterns and templated AlO_x nanosphere via SIS.

Simultaneous Decomposition and Dewetting of Nanoscale Alloys: A Comparison of Experiment and Theory

We consider the coupled process of phase separation and dewetting of metal alloys of nanoscale thickness deposited on solid substrates. The experiments involve applying nanosecond laser pulses that melt the Ag₄₀Ni₆₀ alloy films in two setups: either on thin supporting membranes or on bulk substrates. These two setups allow for extracting both temporal and spatial scales on which the considered processes occur. The theoretical model involves a longwave version of the Cahn-Hilliard formulation used to describe spinodal decomposition, coupled with an asymptotically consistent longwave-based description of dewetting that occurs due to destabilizing interactions between the alloy and the substrate, modeled using the disjoining pressure approach. Careful modeling, combined with linear stability analysis and fully nonlinear simulations, leads to results consistent with the experiments. In particular, we find that the two instability mechanisms occur concurrently, with the phase separation occurring faster and on shorter temporal scales. The modeling results show a strong influence of the temperature dependence of relevant material properties, implying that such a dependence is crucial for the understanding of the experimental findings. The agreement between theory and experiment suggests the utility of the proposed theoretical approach in helping to develop further experiments directed toward formation of metallic alloy nanoparticles of desired properties.

Beyond p-Hexaphenylenes: Synthesis of Unsubstituted p-Nonaphenylene by a Precursor Protocol

The synthesis of unsubstituted oligo‐para‐phenylenes (OPP) exceeding para‐hexaphenylene—in the literature often referred to as p‐sexiphenyl—has long remained elusive due to their insolubility. We report the first preparation of unsubstituted para‐nonaphenylenes (9PPs) by extending our precursor route to poly‐para‐phenylenes (PPP) to a discrete oligomer. Two geometric isomers of methoxylated syn‐ and anti‐cyclohexadienylenes were synthesized, from which 9PP was obtained via thermal aromatization in thin films. 9PP was characterized via optical, infrared and solid‐state ¹³C NMR spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy and mass spectrometry, and compared to polymeric analogues. Due to the lack of substitution, para‐nonaphenylene, irrespective of the precursor isomer employed, displays pronounced aggregation in the solid state. Intermolecular excitonic coupling leads to formation of H‐type aggregates, red‐shifting emission of the films to greenish. 9PP allows to study the structure–property relationship of para‐phenylene oligomers and polymers, especially since the optical properties of PPP depend on the molecular shape of the precursor.

Modulation of substrate van der Waals forces using varying thicknesses of polymer overlayers

Thin polymeric coatings are commonly used for altering surface properties and modulating the interfacial performance of materials. Possible contributions from the substrate to the interfacial forces and effects are, however, usually ignored and are not well understood, nor is it established how the coating thickness modulates and eventually eliminates contributions from substrates to the van der Waals (vdW) interfacial force. In this study we quantified, by colloid-probe atomic force microscope (AFM) and by theoretical calculations, the interfacial vdW contributions from substrates acting through ethanol plasma polymer (EtOHpp) coatings of a range of thicknesses on Au and Si bulk materials. In approach force curves against EtOHpp-coated Au substrates the magnitude of the vdW force decreased as the EtOHpp coating thickness increased to 18 nm and then plateaued with further increases in coating thickness, providing direct evidence for a contribution to the total interfacial vdW force from the Au substrate acting through thin coatings. The experimental observations accord with theoretical calculations of the thickness dependence of Hamaker coefficients derived from rigorous simulation using the Lifshitz theory. In addition, the measured forces agree well with theoretical predictions including correction for finite roughness. Thus, our experimental and theoretical results establish how the thickness of polymer thin film coatings modulates the total interfacial vdW force and how this can be used to tune the net vdW force so as to either contain a large substrate contribution or arise predominantly from the polymeric overlayer. Our findings enable rational design of coating thickness to tailor interfacial interactions and material performance.

Dewetting of Polymer Films Controlled by Protein Adsorption

The stability of the film poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) with different tacticities, prepared on silicon oxide and exposed to aqueous phosphate-buffered saline with different concentrations of bovine serum albumin (CBSA between 0 and 4.5 mg/mL), was examined at temperatures close to the physiological limit (between 4 and 37 °C) with optical microscopy, contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. For PBS solutions with CBSA = 0, the stability of atactic PnBMA and dewetting of isotactic PnBMA was observed, caused by the interplay between the stabilizing long-range dispersion forces and the destabilizing short-range polar interactions. Analogous considerations of excess free energy cannot explain the retardation of dewetting observed for isotactic PnBMA in PBS solutions with higher CBSA. Instead, formation of a BSA overlayer, adsorbed preferentially but not exclusively to uncovered SiOx regions, is evidenced and postulated to hinder polymer dewetting. Polymer dewetting and protein patterning are obtained in one step, suggesting a simple approach to fabricate biomaterials with micropatterned proteins.

Universal dynamics of coarsening during polymer-polymer thin-film spinodal dewetting kinetics

The dewetting dynamics of a supported bilayer polymer thin film on a solid substrate is investigated using grazing incidence x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We find that the top layer dewets via the spinodal mechanism. The kinetics of the dewetting is studied by monitoring the time evolution of the surface diffuse x-ray scattering intensity. We study the time evolution of fluctuations about the average surface structure by measuring the two-time x-ray intensity fluctuation correlation functions. Using these two-time correlation functions we quantify the crossover from early-time diffusive dynamics to hydrodynamics. The early diffusive regime satisfies dynamic universality. The two-time correlation functions also quantify the onset of hydrodynamic effects. The hydrodynamic regime is observed during the spinodal dewetting process as these interactions are not screened.

Nanosecond Laser-Fabricated Monolayer of Gold Nanoparticles on ITO for Bioelectrocatalysis

Redox enzymes can be envisioned as biocatalysts in various electrocatalytic-based devices. Among factors that play roles in bioelectrochemistry limitations, the effect of enzyme-enzyme neighboring interaction on electrocatalysis has rarely been investigated, although critical in vivo. We report in this work an in-depth study of gold nanoparticles prepared by laser ablation in the ultimate goal of determining the relationship between activity and enzyme density on electrodes. Nanosecond laser interaction with nanometric gold films deposited on indium tin oxide support was used to generate in situ gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) free from any stabilizers. A comprehensive analysis of AuNP size and coverage, as well as total geometric surface vs. electroactive surface is provided as a function of the thickness of the treated gold layer. Using microscopy and electrochemistry, the long-term stability of AuNP-based electrodes in the atmosphere and in the electrolyte is demonstrated. AuNPs formed by laser treatment are then modified by thiol chemistry and their electrochemical behavior is tested with a redox probe. Finally, enzyme adsorption and bioelectrocatalysis are evaluated in the case of two enzymes, i.e., the Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase and the Thermus thermophilus laccase. Behaving differently on charged surfaces, they allow demonstrating the validity of laser treated AuNPs for bioelectrocatalysis.

Rouse 2D Diffusion of Polymer Chains in Low Density Precursor Films of Polybutadiene Melts

We took advantage of pseudopartial wetting to promote the spreading of precursor films whose surface density smoothly decays to zero away from a sessile droplet. By following the spreading dynamics of semidilute precursor films of polybutadiene melts on silicon wafers, we measure molecular diffusion coefficients for different molar masses and temperatures. For homopolymers, chains follow a thermally activated 2D Rouse diffusion mechanism, with an activation energy revealing polymer segment interactions with the surface. This Rouse model is generalized to chains with specific terminal groups.

Nanoscale-Dewetting-Based Direct Interconnection of Microelectronics for a Deterministic Assembly of Transfer Printing

As electronics dramatically advance, their components should be fabricated for miniaturized scale, and integrated on limited-size substrates with extremely high density. Current technologies for the integration and interconnection of electronics show some critical limitations in the application of microscale electronics. To address these problems, herein, a new direct and vertical interconnection driven by selective dewetting of a polymer adhesive is introduced. The interconnection system consists of the polymer adhesive and nanosized metal particles, or structured electrodes. Nanoscale-dewetting windows formed by controlling the stability and wetting property of the adhesive polymer are controlled by the interfacial property of the coated polymer adhesive. The adhesive is coated on substrate by a simple spin-coating process, and its ultraviolet curable property allows only the device-mounted parts to be selectively conductive and sticky, while the other parts form insulation and protection layers. The interconnection of the electronics and substrate by adhesive makes it possible to apply the technique to various microsize electronics with electrode size and pitch of 20 µm or less, and endure dramatic temperature change and a long-term high humidity environment. Moreover, over display comprising over 10 000 microscale light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs), and commercialized microchips are demonstrated with monolithic integration on flexible and transparent substrate.
