Suppression of Lattice Doubling in Quasi-Skutterudite La3Rh4Sn13: A Comparison of Temperature and Hydrostatic Pressure Routes

We present structural properties at different temperatures and high-pressure (HP) of La3Rh4Sn13 which is one of the interesting systems in the Remika phase RE3Rh4Sn13 (RE=Sr, Ca, La, Pr, Ce) quasi-skutterudite series using synchrotron diffraction. Data at ambient conditions revealed the presence of several weak reflections, which could be accounted only with a superlattice I* structure (I4132) with lattice parameter a~19.457 Å. However, above 350 K, a complete suppression of the weak superlattice reflections of the I* structure is observed. Data at higher temperatures is found to be well described by the I structure (Pm-3n) having half the lattice parameter compared to the I* structure. HP-XRPD at ambient temperature showed that pressures greater than 7.5 GPa result in similar suppression of the weak I* superlattice reflections. Data at higher pressures is found to be well described by the I structure (Pm-3n), similar to the high-temperature phase. HP Raman measurements demonstrated changes that seem to be consistent with a locally more ordered structure as in the case of the I*→I transition. Our findings on La3Rh4Sn13 open up new avenues to study unexplored HP phenomena, especially the superconductivity in these Remika phase quasi-skutterudites.

Ag2Mo3O10·2H2O nanorods under high pressure: In situ Raman spectroscopy

This work presents a pressure-dependent behavior of silver trimolybdate dihydrate (Ag₂Mo₃O₁₀·2H₂O) nanorods using in situ Raman scattering. The Ag₂Mo₃O₁₀·2H₂O nanorods were obtained by the hydrothermal method at 140 °C for 6 h. The structural and morphological characterization of the sample was performed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Pressure-dependent Raman scattering studies were performed on Ag₂Mo₃O₁₀·2H₂O nanorods up to 5.0 GPa using a membrane diamond-anvil cell (MDAC). The vibrational spectra under high pressure showed splitting and emergence of new bands above 0.5 GPa and 2.9 GPa. Reversible phase transformations under pressure were observed in silver trimolybdate dihydrate nanorods: Phase I - ambient phase (1 atm - 0.5 GPa) → Phase II (0.8 GPa - 2.9 GPa) → Phase III (above 3.4 GPa).

Equations of State and Crystal Structures of KCaPO4, KSrPO4, and K2Ce(PO4)2 under High Pressure: Discovery of a New Polymorph of KCaPO4

We have studied by means of angle-dispersive powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction the structural behavior of KCaPO₄, SrKPO₄, and K₂Ce(PO₄)₂ under high pressure up to 26, 25, and 22 GPa, respectively. For KCaPO₄, we have also accurately determined the crystal structure under ambient conditions, which differs from the structure previously reported. Arguments supporting our structural determination will be discussed. We have found that KCaPO₄ undergoes a reversible phase transition. The onset of the transition is at 5.6 GPa. It involves a symmetry decrease. The low-pressure phase is described by space group P3̅m1 and the high-pressure phase by space group Pnma. For KSrPO₄ and K₂Ce(PO₄)₂, no evidence of phase transitions has been found up to the highest pressure covered by the experiments. For the three compounds, the linear compressibility for the different crystallographic axes and the pressure-volume equation of states are reported and compared with those of other phosphates. The three studied compounds are among the most compressible phosphates. The results of the study improve the knowledge about the high-pressure behavior of complex phosphates.

May a comprehensive mineralogical study of a jackstone calculus and some other human bladder stones unveil health and environmental implications?

This paper represents the first result of an active collaboration between the University of Sannio and the San Pio Hospital (Benevento, Italy), started in the 2018, that aims to a detailed mineralogical investigation of urinary stones of patients from Campania region. Herein, selected human bladder stones have been deeply characterized for clinical purposes and environmental biomonitoring, focusing on the importance to evaluate the concentration and distribution of undesired trace elements by means of microscopic techniques in the place of conventional wet chemical analyses. A rare bladder stone with a sea-urchin appearance, known as jackstone calculus, were also investigated (along with bladder stones made of uric acid and brushite) by means a comprehensive analytical approach, including Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction and Simultaneous Thermal Analyses. Main clinical assumptions were inferred according to the morpho-constitutional classification of bladder stones and information about patient's medical history and lifestyle. In most of the analyzed uroliths, undesired trace elements such as copper, cadmium, lead, chromium, mercury and arsenic have been detected and generally attributable to environmental pollution or contaminated food. Simultaneous occurrence of selenium and mercury should denote a methylmercury detoxification process, probably leading to the formation of a very rare HgSe compound known as tiemannite.

Pressure-enhanced superconductivity in cage-type quasiskutterudite Sc5Rh6Sn18single crystal

Sc₅Rh₆Sn₁₈with a cage-type quasiskutterudite crystal lattice and type II superconductivity, with superconducting transition temperatureT_c= 4.99 K, was investigated under hydrostatic high-pressure (HP) using electrical transport, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Our data show that HP enhance the metallic nature andT_cof the system.T_cis found to show a continuous increase reaching to 5.24 K at 2.5 GPa. Although the system is metallic in nature, Raman spectroscopy investigations at ambient pressure revealed the presence of three weak modes at 165.97, 219.86 and 230.35 cm^-1, mostly related to the rattling atom Sc. The HP-XRD data revealed that the cage structure was stable without any structural phase transition up to ∼7 GPa. The lattice parameters and volume exhibited a smooth decrease without any anomalies as a function of pressure in this pressure range. In particular, a second order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state can describe the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume well, yielding a bulk modulus of ∼97 GPa. HP Raman investigations revealed a linear shift of all the three Raman modes to higher wavenumbers with increasing pressure up to ∼8 GPa. As the pressure enhances the bond overlap, thus inducing more electronic charges into the system, HP-XRD and Raman results may indicate the possibility of obtaining higherT_cwith increasing pressures in this pressure range.

Pressure response of decylammonium-containing 2D iodide perovskites

Manipulation by external pressure of the optical response of 2D Metal Halide Perovskites (MHPs) is a fascinating route to tune their properties and promote the emergence of novel features. We investigate here DA₂PbI₄ and DA₂GeI₄ (DA = decylammonium) perovskites in the pressure range up to ∼12 GPa by X-ray powder diffraction, absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Although the two systems share a similar structural evolution with pressure, the optical properties are rather different and influenced by Pb or Ge. DA₂PbI₄ shows a progressive red shift from 2.28 eV (P = 0 GPa) to 1.64 eV at 11.5 GPa, with a narrow PL emission, whereas DA₂GeI₄, changes from a non-PL system at ambient pressure to a clear broadband emitter centered around 730 nm with an intensity maximum at about 3.7 GPa. These results unveil the role of the central atom on the nature of emission under pressure in 2D MHPs containing a long alkyl chain.

Structural Metastability and Fermi Surface Topology of SrAl2Si2

SrAl₂Si₂ crystallizes into either a semimetallic, CaAl₂Si₂-type, α phase or a superconducting, BaZn₂P₂-type, β phase. We explore possible α→Pc,⁡Tcβ transformations by employing pressure- and temperature-dependent free-energy calculations, vibrational spectral calculations, and room-temperature synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements up to 14 GPa using a diamond anvil cell. Our theoretical and empirical analyses together with all reported baric and thermal events on both phases allow us to construct a preliminary P-T diagram of transformations. Our calculations show a relatively low critical pressure for the α-to-β transition (4.9 GPa at 0 K, 5.0 GPa at 300 K, and 5.3 GPa at 900 K); nevertheless, our nonequilibrium analysis indicates that the low-pressure low-temperature α phase is separated from a metastable β phase by a relatively high activation barrier. This analysis is supported by our PXRD data at ambient temperature and P ≤ 14 GPa, which shows an absence of the β phase even after a compression involving three times the critical pressure. Finally, we briefly consider the change in the Fermi surface topology when atomic rearrangement takes place via either transformations among SrAl₂Si₂ dimorphs or total chemical substitution of Ca by Sr in the isomorphous CaAl₂Si₂ α phase; empirically, the manifestation of such a topology modification is evident upon comparison of the evolution of the (magneto)transport properties of members of SrAl₂Si₂ dimorphs and α isomorphs.

Pressure Dependence of Superconducting Properties, Pinning Mechanism, and Crystal Structure of the Fe0.99Mn0.01Se0.5Te0.5 Superconductor

We have investigated the pressure (P) effect on structural (up to 10 GPa), transport [R(T): up to 10 GPa], and magnetic [(M(T): up to 1 GPa)] properties and analyzed the flux pinning mechanism of the Fe0.99Mn0.01Se0.5Te0.5 superconductor. The maximum superconducting transition temperature (T c) of 22 K with the P coefficient of T c dT c/dP = +2.6 K/GPa up to 3 GPa (dT c/dP = -3.6 K/GPa, 3 ≤ P ≥ 9 GPa) was evidenced from R(T) measurements. The high-pressure diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal structural phase transformation from tetragonal to hexagonal at 5.9 GPa, and a remarkable change in the unit cell volume is observed at ∼3 GPa where the T c starts to decrease, which may be due to the reduction of charge carriers, as evidenced by a reduction in the density of states (DOS) close to the Fermi level. At higher pressures of 7.7 GPa ≤ P ≥ 10.2 GPa, a mixed phase (tetragonal + hexagonal phase) is observed, and the T c completely vanishes at 9 GPa. A significant enhancement in the critical current density (J C) is observed due to the increase of pinning centers induced by external pressure. The field dependence of the critical current density under pressure shows a crossover from the δl pinning mechanism (at 0 GPa) to the δT c pinning mechanism (at 1.2 GPa). The field dependence of the pinning force at ambient condition and under pressure reveals the dense point pinning mechanism of Fe0.99Mn0.01Se0.5Te0.5. Moreover, both upper critical field (H C2) and J C are enhanced significantly by the application of an external P and change over to a high P phase (hexagonal ∼5.9 GPa) faster than a Fe0.99Ni0.01Se0.5Te0.5 (7.7 GPa) superconductor.

Anomalous structural behavior and antiferroelectricity in BiGdO3: detailed temperature and high-pressure study

A comprehensive temperature and high-pressure investigation on BiGdO₃is carried out by means of dielectric constant, piezoelectric current, polarization-electric field loop, Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements. Temperature dependent dielectric constant and dielectric loss show two anomalies at about 290 K (T_r) and 720 K (T_C). The latter anomaly is most likely due to antiferroelectric to paraelectric transition as hinted by piezoelectric current and polarization-electric field loop measurements at room temperature, while the former anomaly suggests reorientation of polarization. A small deviation from linear behaviour of both the Raman modes due to structural modification in the vicinity ofT_C; and sharp decrease in integrated intensities of these two modes aboveT_Cprovide further proof for the above antiferroelectric to paraelectric transition. Cubic to monoclinic structural transition is observed at about 10 GPa in high-pressure x-ray diffraction studies accompanied by anisotropic lattice parameter changes and large unit cell volume collapse during the transition. This structural transition is corroborated by anomalous softening and large increase in full width half maximum of M₂(640 cm^-1) Raman mode above 10 GPa. We speculate that enhancement of large structural distortion and large reduction inc/aratio above 10 GPa might be associated with antiferroelectric to ferroelectric transition in the system.

Crystal Structure Evolution of CaSiO3 Polymorphs at Earth’s Mantle Pressures

CaSiO3 polymorphs are abundant in only unique geological settings on the Earth’s surface and are the major Ca-bearing phases at deep mantle condition. An accurate and comprehensive study of their density and structural evolution with pressure and temperature is still lacking. Therefore, in this study we report the elastic behavior and structural evolution of wollastonite and CaSiO3-walstromite with pressure. Both minerals are characterized by first order phase transitions to denser structures. The deformations that lead to these transformations allow a volume increase ofthe bigger polyhedra, which might ease cation substitution in the structural sites of these phases. Furthermore, their geometrical features are clear analogies with those predicted and observed for tetrahedrally-structured ultra-high-pressure carbonates, which are unfortunately unquenchable. Indeed, wollastonite and CaSiO3-walstromite have a close resemblance to ultra-high-pressure chain- and ring-carbonates. This suggests a rich polymorphism also for tetrahedral carbonates, which might increase the compositional range of these phases, including continuous solid solutions involving cations with different size (Ca vs. Mg in particular) and important minor or trace elements incorporation.

Evaluation of the Defect Cluster Content in Singly and Doubly Doped Ceria through In Situ High-Pressure X-ray Diffraction

Defect aggregates in doped ceria play a crucial role in blocking the movement of oxygen vacancies and hence in reducing ionic conductivity. Nevertheless, evaluation of their amount and the correlation between domain size and transport properties is still an open issue. Data derived from a high-pressure X-ray diffraction investigation performed on the Ce_1–x(Nd_0.74Tm_0.26)_xO_2–x/2 system are employed to develop a novel approach aimed at evaluating the defect aggregate content; the results are critically discussed in comparison to the ones previously obtained from Sm- and Lu-doped ceria. Defect clusters are present even at the lowest considered x value, and their content increases with increasing x and decreasing rare earth ion (RE³⁺) size; their amount, distribution, and spatial correlation can be interpreted as a complex interplay between the defects’ binding energy, nucleation rate, and growth rate. The synoptic analysis of data derived from all of the considered systems also suggests that the detection limit of the defects by X-ray diffraction is correlated to the defect size rather than to their amount, and that the vacancies’ flow through the lattice is hindered by defects irrespective of their size and association degree.

A novel approach to the treatment of high-pressure X-ray diffraction data is applied to several rare earth-doped ceria systems with the aim of providing an evaluation of the amount of defect aggregates and of the composition of the CeO₂-based solid solution. By this method, it is possible to effectively correlate the structural properties and ionic conductivity of the studied material.

Large scale synthesis of copper nickel alloy nanoparticles with reduced compressibility using arc thermal plasma process

Among the various methods employed in the synthesis of nanostructures, those involving high operating temperature and sharp thermal gradients often lead to the establishment of new exotic properties. Herein, we report on the formation of Cu-Ni metallic alloy nanoparticles with greatly enhanced stiffness achieved through direct-current transferred arc-thermal plasma assisted vapour-phase condensation. High pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) at ambient temperature as well as XRPD in the temperature range 180 to 920 K, show that the thermal arc-plasma route resulted in alloy nanoparticles with much enhanced bulk modulus compared to their bulk counterparts. Such a behaviour may find an explanation in the sudden quenching assisted by the retention of a large amount of local strain due to alloying, combined with the perfect miscibility of the elemental components during the thermal plasma synthesis process.

Temperature Dependent Structural Evolution of WSe2: A Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Study

A thorough investigation of the structural parameters of micromechanically exfoliated multilayer WSe2 flakes was undertaken between 400 K to 110 K. Crystal structure of WSe2 remains in the trigonal prismatic structure in this temperature range, however, with a clear difference in the temperature dependence of the in-plane a, and the out-of-plane c, lattice parameters. The linear coefficients of thermal expansion of a and c are 5.132 × 10−6/K and 8.105 × 10−6/K, respectively. The temperature dependence of the unit-cell volume is analyzed using zero-pressure equation-of-state which yielded the Debye temperature of the WSe2 to be 160 K. Following the temperature dependence of the W-Se and W-W bond distances, a nonlinear behavior is observed in the former in contrast to a rather regular behavior of the later. This significant difference in the temperature dependence of the a and c lattice parameters can have consequences in the macroscopic physical properties of the system. A good correlation between the temperature dependence of the W-Se bond distance and Raman E2g1 mode has been observed.

Crystal structure of monoclinic hafnia (HfO2) revisited with synchrotron X-ray, neutron diffraction and first-principles calculations

A study on the crystal structure of monoclinic HfO₂ has been performed using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction data separately, as well as a combination of both. The precision of the structural parameters increases significantly due to application of the neutron diffraction technique. The experimental oxygen positions in HfO₂, derived precisely, are visualized only by semi-local density functional calculations in terms of the calculated electronic band gap, but are not captured as accurately by using hybrid functionals.

Pressure dependence of room-temperature structural properties of CaAl2Si2

We investigated the pressure dependence of the crystal structure of CaAl2Si2by means ofab initiocalculations and room-temperature synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction.Ab initiocalculations reproduce satisfactorily the experimentally observed pressure-dependent structural evolution up to 3 GPa where the title system remains in the trigonalP3¯m1phase. In the pressure range 3-8 GPa, pressure evolution of the calculated in-plane lattice parameters is steeper than the observed.Ab initiocalculations predict a structural phase transition to a tetragonal phase (P3¯m1to I4/mmm) near 7.5 GPa for zero (or room) temperature. Temperature effects are included through calculation of vibrational properties (phonon spectra). These calculations confirm that both phases are either globally or locally stable (metastable) and allow for the construction of aP-Tphase diagram for this system. However, our experiments show no sign of such a transition up to 12 GPa. Such a discrepancy can be explained if one considers the trigonal (P3¯m1) structure to be metastable above the critical pressure, but is separated from the predicted tetragonal (I4/mmm) structure by a relatively high energy barrier. The applied pressure alone may not be able to surpass the energy-barrier; rather a joint high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) treatment may lead to it. However, empirical verification of such a hypothetical transition may be hampered by the chemistry of CaAl2Si2system which shows tendency to decompose peritectically into Ca2Al3Si4and aluminum under HPHT treatment.

In Situ High Pressure Structural Investigation of Sm-Doped Ceria

As a result of the lattice mismatch between the oxide itself and the substrate, the high-pressure structural properties of trivalent rare earth (RE)-doped ceria systems help to mimic the compressive/tensile strain in oxide thin films. The high-pressure structural features of Sm-doped ceria were studied by X-ray diffraction experiments performed on Ce1−xSmxO2−x/2 (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6) up to 7 GPa, and the cell volumes were fitted by the third order Vinet equation of state (EoS) at the different pressures obtained from Rietveld refinements. A linear decrease of the ln B 0 vs. ln ( 2 V a t ) trend occurred as expected, but the regression line was much steeper than predicted for oxides, most probably due to the effect of oxygen vacancies arising from charge compensation, which limits the increase of the mean atomic volume ( V a t ) vs. the Sm content. The presence of RE2O3-based cubic microdomains within the sample stiffens the whole structure, making it less compressible with increases in applied pressure. Results are discussed in comparison with ones previously obtained from Lu-doped ceria.
