Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding is the optimal method of providing infant nutrition. The Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) is a global strategy to promote breastfeeding. This study aimed to explore infant feeding data in Australian hospitals and compare outcomes between BFHI and non-BFHI accredited hospitals, and between public and private hospitals. METHODS We targeted publicly available Australian public and private hospital data on breastfeeding outcomes at discharge from 2018 to 2019. We linked the data to the BFHI accredited hospitals and used t tests to compare mean breastfeeding rates and Chi square or Fisher's exact test for categorical variables. FINDINGS Across all Australian states and territories, only New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (VIC) provided the publicly available target data. Breastfeeding indicators were defined differently between these states. In NSW, breastfeeding at discharge was reported as a full breastfeeding rate among live born infants (71 %) whereas in VIC, it was reported as exclusive breastfeeding rates among term babies only (79 %). Comparing public with private hospitals, the rates of full breastfeeding at discharge in NSW and exclusive breastfeeding in VIC were significantly lower among private non-BFHI accredited hospitals compared to public non-BFHI accredited hospitals. CONCLUSION BFHI accreditation can be beneficial in decreasing the rates of commercial milk formula use. Consistent reinforcement of BFHI principles and implementation in both private and public hospitals is required. Regular state monitoring and national dissemination of aggregated data collected using standardised breastfeeding indicators is also essential.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Breastfeeding represents an important opportunity to optimize health outcomes for both mother and infant, particularly in the context of maternal metabolic conditions such as diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. However, evidence suggests that women affected by these conditions breastfeed at reduced rates and durations. Our aim was to use the large, prospective, community-based Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) to conduct an in-depth exploratory analysis of breastfeeding outcomes in Australian women affected by key maternal metabolic conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from 12 920 pregnancies to 5605 women from the 1973-1978 birth cohort of the ALSWH were examined. Univariable and multivariable regression using generalized estimating equation models were applied to assess breastfeeding initiation and duration (outcome measures) in relation to key self-reported maternal metabolic diagnoses (pre-gestational type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome; main explanatory variables). Key sociodemographic and clinical covariates were also considered. RESULTS Results showed no significant association between specific maternal metabolic diagnoses (pre-gestational or gestational diabetes, or polycystic ovary syndrome) and breastfeeding outcomes. However, maternal body mass index emerged as a key predictor of suboptimal breastfeeding outcomes. Pregnancies affected by maternal obesity were associated with a 2.1-fold increase in the odds of not initiating breastfeeding, after adjusting for other key variables (95% CI 1.67 to 2.60, p < 0.01). Maternal overweight and obesity were, respectively, associated with an adjusted 1.4-fold (95% CI 1.20 to 1.55, p < 0.01) and 1.8-fold increase (95% CI 1.60 to 2.10, p < 0.01) in the odds of a breastfeeding duration less than 6 months. CONCLUSIONS Maternal obesity, rather than any specific maternal metabolic condition, appears to be a key predictor of breastfeeding outcomes in Australian women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (referred to hereafter as Aboriginal) women breastfeed at lower rates than non-Aboriginal women, and rates vary across and within Aboriginal populations. AIM To determine rates of breastfeeding initiation and maintenance and compare individually collected survey data with existing routinely collected state and national breastfeeding data for Aboriginal women. METHODS CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane library were searched for peer-reviewed literature published between 1995 and 2021. Quantitative studies written in English and reporting breastfeeding for Aboriginal women or women having an Aboriginal infant were included. Screening and quality assessment included co-screening 10 % of papers. Two reviewers completed data extraction. A proportional meta-analysis was undertaken for breastfeeding initiation and narrative data synthesis used to summarise breastfeeding maintenance. FINDINGS The initial search identified 12,091 records, with 31 full text studies retrieved, and 27 reports from 22 studies met inclusion criteria. Breastfeeding initiation was 79 % (95 % CI 0.73, 0.85), however, rates were lower than non-Aboriginal women. Maintenance ranged between one week and five years. Rates and definitions varied significantly between studies, with inconsistencies in government collection and reporting of breastfeeding. CONCLUSION Significant variation in definitions and reporting make comparisons difficult. Breastfeeding rates were below recommended targets. Future pattern and trend analyses require standardised measures and definitions. Current collection and reporting of breastfeeding data, particularly routinely collected state-based data, is inadequate to present an accurate picture of current breastfeeding in Australia for Aboriginal women and infants, and to effectively inform interventions and policies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding provides many short- and long-term health benefits for mothers and their infants and is a particularly relevant strategy for women who experience Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy. However, breastfeeding rates are generally lower amongst this group of women than the general population. This review's objective is to identify the factors that influence breastfeeding by exploring the experiences and outcomes of women in in high-income health care contexts when there is a history of GDM in the corresponding pregnancy. METHODS A comprehensive search strategy explored the electronic databases Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science and Scopus for primary studies exploring breastfeeding practices for papers published between January 2011 and June 2023. All papers were screened independently by two researchers with included papers assessed using the Crowe Critical Appraisal tool. Findings were analysed using a narrative synthesis framework. RESULTS From an initial search result of 1037 papers, 16 papers representing five high-income nations were included in this review for analysis - the United States of America (n = 10), Australia (n = 3), Finland (n = 1), Norway (n = 1), and Israel (n = 1). Fifteen papers used a quantitative design, and one used a qualitative design. The total number of participants represented in the papers is 963,718 of which 812,052 had GDM and 151,666 did not. Women with an immediate history of GDM were as likely to initiate breastfeeding as those without it. However, they were more likely to have the first feed delayed, be offered supplementation, experience delayed lactogenesis II and or a perception of low supply. Women were less likely to exclusively breastfeed and more likely to completely wean earlier than the general population. Maternity care practices, maternal factors, family influences, and determinants of health were contextual and acted as either a facilitator or barrier for this group. CONCLUSION Breastfeeding education and support need to be tailored to recognise the individual needs and challenges of women with a history of GDM. Interventions, including the introduction of commercial milk formula (CMF) may have an even greater impact and needs to be very carefully considered. Supportive strategies should encompass the immediate and extended family who are major sources of influence.

Abstract
Background: Breastfeeding is especially beneficial to women with diabetes and their infants, yet diabetic mothers frequently experience less favorable breastfeeding outcomes. Objectives: To identify facilitators and barriers to breastfeeding for women with diabetes by comparing cognitive and social factors, health and hospital-related factors, and breastfeeding outcomes between women with and without diabetes. Design/Methods: Women with any type of diabetes (n = 28) and without diabetes (n = 29) were recruited during pregnancy. Data were collected from the electronic medical record and maternal surveys at 24-37 weeks' gestation, birth hospitalization, and 4 weeks' postbirth. We compared differences in mother's regard for breastfeeding, breastfeeding intention, and birth hospital experience by diabetes status, and estimated odds ratios for exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and unmet intention to breastfeed. Results: Women with and without diabetes had similar breastfeeding intentions, attitudes, and self-efficacy. Women with diabetes were less likely to EBF, and more likely to have unmet intentions to EBF at hospital discharge, compared to women without diabetes. At 4 weeks' postpartum, there was no difference in breastfeeding by diabetes status, although EBF at hospital discharge was strongly associated with EBF at 4 weeks. Infant neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and hypoglycemia were significantly associated with diabetes status, reduced EBF rates, and unmet breastfeeding intentions. Conclusions: Despite having a strong intent to breastfeed, women with diabetes experienced less favorable early breastfeeding outcomes and were less likely to meet their own breastfeeding goals. These differences may be driven by neonatal complications, such as infant hypoglycemia and NICU admissions, rather than maternal cognitive and social factors.

Little is known about factors associated with breastfeeding specific to Aboriginal women and infants. AIM Determine the protective and risk factors associated with breastfeeding for Aboriginal women in Australia. METHODS CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane library were searched for peer-reviewed literature published between 1995 and 2021. Quantitative studies written in English reporting protective and risk factors associated with breastfeeding for Aboriginal women or women having an Aboriginal infant were included. Ten percent of papers were co-screened, and two reviewers completed data extraction. Narrative data synthesis was used. FINDINGS The initial search identified 12,091 records, with 31 full text studies retrieved, and 17 reports from 14 studies met inclusion criteria. Protective factors included living in a remote area, attending an Aboriginal-specific service, attending a regional service, higher levels of education attainment, increased maternal age, living in larger households, being partnered, and having a higher reported number of stressful events and social health issues. The identified risk factors were smoking in pregnancy, admission to SCN or NICU, and being multiparous. CONCLUSION This review identified factors associated with breastfeeding for Aboriginal women. Government focus, support, and consistent funding are required to plan and implement evidence-based interventions and services for Aboriginal women and infants in urban, rural, remote, and very remote locations. Rigorous research is required to understand the Aboriginal-specific factors associated with breastfeeding to improve rates and health outcomes for Aboriginal women and infants.

Abstract
Aims Our study aimed to identify the common themes, knowledge gaps and to evaluate the quality of data linkage research on diabetes in Australia. Methods This systematic review was developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (the PRISMA Statement). Six biomedical databases and the Australian Population Health Research Network (PHRN) website were searched. A narrative synthesis was conducted to comprehensively identify the common themes and knowledge gaps. The guidelines for studies involving data linkage were used to appraise methodological quality of included studies. Results After screening and hand-searching, 118 studies were included in the final analysis. Data linkage publications confirmed negative health outcomes in people with diabetes, reported risk factors for diabetes and its complications, and found an inverse association between primary care use and hospitalization. Linked data were used to validate data sources and diabetes instruments. There were limited publications investigating healthcare expenditure and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in people with diabetes. Regarding methodological assessment, important information about the linkage performed was under-reported in included studies. Conclusions In the future, more up to date data linkage research addressing costs of diabetes and its complications in a contemporary Australian setting, as well as research assessing ADRs of recently approved antidiabetic medications, are required.

Abstract
AIMS (1) To determine the likelihood of full breastfeeding at 3 months postpartum in women with and without diabetes in pregnancy (DiP); (2) to explore the associations between diabetes management practices and infant feeding practices in those who had DiP and (3) to examine women's experiences of feeding their infants after having DiP. METHODS The quantitative study used data from Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition (APrON) cohort study. Participants who had DiP (n = 62) were matched 1:3 to participants without DiP for pre-pregnancy BMI, parity, mode of delivery and pre-term birth. Infant feeding questionnaires, prospective breastfeeding diaries and medical chart data were analysed to determine likelihood of fully breastfeeding at 3 months postpartum. For the qualitative study, interviews were conducted with postpartum women who had DiP to explore the experiences of infant feeding. Interviews were thematically analysed, and the results were compared between women who were categorized as 'full breast feeders' or 'mixed feeders'. RESULTS The odds of fully breastfeeding were 50% lower in women with DiP than women without DiP (OR: 0.50, 95% CI 0.25-0.99, p = 0.04). Qualitative interviews identified that although all women showed resilience in the face of infant feeding challenges, those who were fully breastfeeding reported seeking out external infant feeding supports, for example, classes or Doula's. Mixed Feeders perceived there was a lack of infant feeding information and support given to them prior to giving birth. CONCLUSION Women with DiP may require additional prenatal and postnatal infant feeding support to be better prepared to overcome feeding challenges they may face.

Abstract
PROBLEM Women with gestational diabetes have higher rates of introducing infant formula before leaving hospital. BACKGROUND Despite health professional support, less women with gestational diabetes exclusively breastfeed in hospital. AIM To find factors that positively influence in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding practices among women with gestational diabetes. METHODS An online search was performed in Medline, Scopus, Pubmed, CINAHL and Cochrane databases. Studies containing the keywords gestational diabetes and breastfeeding were retrieved. FINDINGS Authors identified 1935 papers from search criteria. Twenty-six papers with no restrictions on research design met inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Factors were divided into personal, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal factors. The main modifiable factors that were associated with improved in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding rates were having a strong intention to breastfeed, being confident, feeling supported and having continuity of education and support. Women's main reasons to introduce formula were related to baby's hypoglycaemia, delayed lactogenesis II and perceived low milk supply. Skin-to-skin contact after birth combined with frequent breastfeeds were effective ways to improve in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding rates. CONCLUSION Influencing factors such as women's breastfeeding intention, confidence and ongoing support are no different to the general population of women. However, promoting skin-to-skin contact after birth combined with frequent feeds are crucial for women with gestational diabetes who are more likely to introduce formula due to delayed lactogenesis II and fear of neonatal hypoglycaemia. There is a need for developing educational and supportive interventions that are tailored specifically for women who have gestational diabetes.

Abstract
Background Excessive weight loss enhances the incidence of neonatal hypernatremic dehydration (NHD). We compared the effect of a new breastfeeding policy against an old breastfeeding policy on neonatal weight change and the incidence of NHD. Methods This was a QA project between two sets of breastfeeding (BF) protocols for exclusively BF newborns. Under our old BF policy, a number of neonates had a significant loss of weight after birth and were admitted to the NICU due to NHD. We implemented a new BF policy that was used when a newborn loses>5% of previously recorded weight within a 24-h interval. Two groups were compared: the preintervention group (old BF policy) and postintervention group (new BF policy). Additionally, characteristics of newborns admitted to NICU were separately compared with the subgroup of pre- and post intervention dehydration groups. Results Preintervention = 1320 and postintervention = 1450. Neonates with weight loss of ≥ 5% within the first 24-h time interval were higher in the postintervention group (19.7%) as compared to the preintervention group (10.2%) (P < .05). However, the number of infants diagnosed to have NHD was lower in the postintervention group (0.68%) than in the preintervention group (1.66%), (P < .03). Neonatal characteristics were comparable between subgroups of dehydration. Conclusion An intervention at ≥ 5% neonatal weight loss markedly reduces the incidence of NHD-associated NICU admissions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prudent infant nutrition, including exclusive breastfeeding to 6 months, is essential for optimal short-term and long-term health. Quantitative research to date has documented that many Indigenous communities have lower breastfeeding rates than the general population and that this gap in breastfeeding initiation and maintenance may have an important impact on chronic disease risk later in life. However, there are critical knowledge gaps in the literature regarding factors that influence infant feeding decisions. Qualitative research on infant feeding experiences provides a broader understanding of the challenges that Indigenous caregivers encounter, and insights provided by this approach are essential to identify research gaps, community engagement strategies, and programme and policy development. The objective of this review is to summarise the qualitative literature that describes breastfeeding and other infant feeding experiences of Indigenous caregivers. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This scoping review will follow guidelines from Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews, the Joanna Briggs Institute and the methodological framework from Arksey and O'Malley. In October 2020, we will conduct an electronic database search using Medline, Embase, The Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PsycINFO, and Scopus, and will focus on qualitative studies. Publications that have a focus on infant feeding in Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, and the Indigenous caregiver experience from the caregiver perspective, will be included. We will conduct a grey literature search using Indigenous Studies Portal, country-specific browser searches, and known government, association, and community websites/reports. We will map themes and concepts of the publications, including study results and methodologies, to identify research gaps, future directions, challenges and best practices in this topic area. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval is not required for this review as no unpublished primary data will be included. The results of this review will be shared through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. This protocol is registered through the Open Science Framework (osf.io/4su79).

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and obesity experience lower rates of breastfeeding. Little is known about breastfeeding among mothers with type 2 diabetes. Australian Indigenous women have a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes in pregnancy. We aimed to evaluate the association of hyperglycaemia, including type 2 diabetes, with breastfeeding outcomes. METHODS Indigenous (n = 495) and non-Indigenous (n = 555) participants of the Pregnancy And Neonatal Diabetes Outcomes in Remote Australia (PANDORA) cohort included women without hyperglycaemia in pregnancy (n = 222), with GDM (n = 684) and with type 2 diabetes (n = 144). The associations of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy and breastfeeding at hospital discharge, 6 weeks and 6 months post-partum were evaluated with logistic regression, after adjustment for maternal obesity, ethnicity, maternal and neonatal characteristics. RESULTS Indigenous women were more likely to predominantly breastfeed at 6 weeks across all levels of hyperglycaemia. Compared with women with no hyperglycaemia in pregnancy, women with type 2 diabetes had lower odds for exclusive breastfeeding at discharge (adjusted OR for exclusive breastfeeding 0.4 [95% CI 0.2, 0.8] p = 0.006). At 6 weeks and 6 months, the relationship between type 2 diabetes and predominant breastfeeding was not statistically significant (6 weeks 0.7 [0.3, 1.6] p = 0.40, 6 months 0.8 [0.4, 1.6] p = 0.60). Women with gestational diabetes were as likely to achieve predominant breastfeeding at 6 weeks and 6 months as women without hyperglycaemia in pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Indigenous women had high rates of breastfeeding. Women with type 2 diabetes had difficulty establishing exclusive breastfeeding at hospital discharge. Further research is needed to assess the impact on long-term breastfeeding outcomes. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Background Studies reveal that promoting the breastfeeding knowledge level help to improve breastfeeding behaviors. Promoting breastfeeding knowledge is a simple and economical way to increase breastfeeding rates. However, there are no studies focus on the level of breastfeeding knowledge and factors influencing the knowledge in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is defined as any degree of glucose tolerance impairment first diagnosed during pregnancy. Thus, the objectives of this study were to investigate the breastfeeding knowledge level of GDM pregnant women and explore factors influencing the knowledge level. Methods Cross-sectional survey and convenience sampling were conducted in this study. The sociodemographic characteristics, caregivers in pregnancy, knowledge source, breastfeeding status and breast status information of participants were collected. Breastfeeding Knowledge Scale was used to assess the breastfeeding knowledge level of pregnant women with GDM. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the influence factors of breastfeeding knowledge level in this study. Results A total of 226 questionnaires were issued and finally 212 valid questionnaires were collected. Some misconceptions still existed (e.g. ‘breastfeeding cannot prevent your baby from being overweight’ and ‘it is advisable to breastfeed 3-4 times per day within 2-3 days after delivery’), although women with GDM had a good score of breastfeeding knowledge (mean score: 103.5 ± 10.4). Multiple linear regression analysis found that gestational age, family per capita monthly income, educational level, knowledge source were the independent protective factors for breastfeeding knowledge and minority nationality was the independent risk factor. The educational level had the greatest influence on the breastfeeding knowledge level of GDM pregnant women (β = 0.210, t = 2.978, P = 0.003). Conclusion GDM pregnant women with insufficient gestational age, low educational level, low family per capita monthly income and single access to knowledge should be included in the focus of health education on breastfeeding. In-depth and systematic health education should be conducted for pregnant women with GDM to improve their breastfeeding rate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding offers benefits to mother and child but is frequently not practiced among women whose pregnancy is complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus. Factors associated with not initiating or not maintaining breastfeeding among these women have been little investigated. RESEARCH AIMS (1) To evaluate the frequency of breastfeeding for 30 days among women with a recent pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes and (2) to determine factors associated with not initiating or not maintaining breastfeeding. METHODS Between January 2014 and July 2017 we enrolled women with gestational diabetes at high-risk prenatal services in three Brazilian cities. We collected baseline sociodemographic and health data and followed up with participants by telephone. Using Kaplan-Meier curves, we calculated the proportions of participants not initiating breastfeeding or not maintaining it for at least 30 days. We used Poisson regression with robust variance to identify factors related to this outcome. RESULTS Of the 2328 participants with complete information, 2236 (96.1%) initiated breastfeeding, and 2166 (93.1%) maintained breastfeeding for 30 days. Not having breastfed the previous infant (relative risk [RR] = 5.02, 95% CI [3.39, 7.45]), smoking during pregnancy (RR = 2.37, 95% CI [1.48, 3.80]), infant with health problems (RR = 2.25, 95% CI [1.27, 3.99]), early preterm birth (RR = 2.49, 95% CI [1.07, 5.77]), and not intending to breastfeed (RR = 3.73, 95% CI [1.89, 7.33]) were related to not maintaining breastfeeding for at least 30 days. CONCLUSIONS Breastfeeding initiation was nearly universal among participants, and most maintained breastfeeding for 30 days. Factors relating to not breastfeeding at 30 days were easily identifiable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Women with diabetes in pregnancy may experience unique breastfeeding challenges. Few studies have examined the effectiveness of hospital policy to support breastfeeding in this patient population. This study aimed 1) to describe infant feeding practices of mother-infant pairs with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or type 2 diabetes in pregnancy before and after introduction of an in-hospital policy and, 2) to compare feeding practices before and after policy introduction. METHODS A retrospective chart audit of mother-infant pairs (n=120) was performed: 60 at 1 year before and 60 after policy introduction. The primary outcome was provision of breast milk at discharge; a chi-square test was completed to compare pre- and postpolicy groups. Secondary outcomes included participant and infant feeding characteristics. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the number of infants receiving breast milk at discharge between pre- (58% [35 of 60]) and postpolicy (58% [35 of 60]) groups (p=0.64). The number of infants receiving breast milk exclusively throughout the hospital stay also did not differ by group (37% [22 of 60] before; and 43% [26 of 60] after; p=0.39). Information for each feed was infrequently recorded in charts for the method of feeding (34% [704 of 2,064]), infant state (96% [1,991 of 2,064]) and feeding description (96% [1,987 of 2,064]). CONCLUSIONS This practice-based research has highlighted a need for continuation of this work, examining an in-hospital policy to support breastfeeding in those with GDM or type 2 diabetes in pregnancy. Initially, feedback could be collected from health-care providers to understand perceived facilitators and barriers to policy application and the use of job aids (e.g. record keeping tools).

Abstract
Studies of gestational diabetes mellitus in relation to breastfeeding are limited, while their findings are inconsistent. This systematic review was conducted to assess the associations between gestational diabetes and breastfeeding outcomes. An initial search of PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest identified 518 studies, and after applying the inclusion criteria, 16 studies were finally included in the review. Four studies reported that “exclusive/predominant/full breastfeeding” rates at discharge were lower in mothers with gestational diabetes than in those without gestational diabetes, and 2 studies showed a shorter duration of “exclusive/predominant breastfeeding” in the former than in the latter. However, most studies found no apparent difference in the rate of “breastfeeding initiation”, “any breastfeeding” duration, or “any breastfeeding” in hospital and at discharge between mothers with and without gestational diabetes. In summary, mothers with gestational diabetes were less likely to exclusively breastfeed their infants and may have a shorter breastfeeding duration than other mothers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding (BF) neonates generally lose weight after birth. Neonatal factors like gestational age, birth weight and mode of delivery can affect the neonatal weight loss after birth. Similarly, maternal age, parity and illness may contribute to newborn weight loss. However, influence of the time of birth and season on changes in weight is not well elucidated. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to determine the effect of birth time and the seasonal variations on weight loss in BF newborns. METHODS In this retrospective study of a prospectively maintained database of two sets of groups, from January 2013 to October 2016, were evaluated- Birth time group and Seasonal group; Birth time of the groups was: night time 7pm to 7am and day time 7am to 7pm; and the seasonal variations groups studies were summer, fall, winter and spring. Weight loss of >5%, 7%, and 10% at <24 hours (h), 48 h and 72 h of birth, respectively, were considered as a significant weight loss. Preterm, exclusively formula fed and neonates admitted to NICU were excluded. RESULTS A total of 2044 newborns were analyzed. In the birth time group, babies born during the night time had significantly lost >5% of birth weight at <24 h (p < 0.01) and >7% birth weight at <48 h of life (p < 0.02). Weight loss >10% at <72 h was similar in both birth time cohorts. C-section, prolonged rupture of membrane, and maternal pre-delivery hospital stay for >12 h were significant contributing factors. Whereas, seasonal variations were not associated with weight loss in neonates. CONCLUSION BF babies born at night time lose significantly more weight during the first two days of life and seasonal association was not found to affect weight loss in the neonates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and its complications are major concerns because of the negative effects of GDM during antenatal period and on the future health of mothers and infants. Breastfeeding is beneficial for GDM mothers and their babies to reduce future health risks. Little is known about the link between GDM and the duration of "any" breastfeeding. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between GDM and the duration for which Vietnamese women breastfeed their babies postpartum. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective cohort of 2,030 pregnant women between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation was recruited. GDM status was determined using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test. Included mothers were then followed up from discharge after childbirth until 12 months postpartum to determine their breastfeeding duration. Kaplan-Meier estimates, log-rank tests, logistic and Cox regression models were used to examine the association between GDM and breastfeeding outcomes. RESULTS In our cohort, 94.4% of all women reported "any" breastfeeding at discharge and 72.9% of women were still breastfeeding at 12 months postpartum. The risk of early breastfeeding cessation was higher in GDM women than their non-GDM counterparts after adjustment for demographic factors (hazard ratios [HR] = 1.39, 95% confidence intervals [CI] = 1.13-1.71, p = 0.002), and all potential confounding factors (HR = 1.38, 95% CI = 1.12-1.70, p = 0.002). There were no significant differences in breastfeeding outcomes at discharge (early initiation, prelacteal feeding, and "any" breastfeeding rate) between GDM and non-GDM mothers. CONCLUSIONS GDM was associated with shorter breastfeeding duration. Women with GDM require ongoing support after hospital discharge to maintain long-term breastfeeding.

Abstract
Indigenous women and children experience some of the most profound health disparities globally. These disparities are grounded in historical and contemporary trauma secondary to colonial atrocities perpetuated by settler society. The health disparities that exist for chronic diseases may have their origins in early-life exposures that Indigenous women and children face. Mechanistically, there is evidence that these adverse exposures epigenetically modify genes associated with cardiometabolic disease risk. Interventions designed to support a resilient pregnancy and first 1000 days of life should abrogate disparities in early-life socioeconomic status. Breastfeeding, prenatal care and early child education are key targets for governments and health care providers to start addressing current health disparities in cardiometabolic diseases among Indigenous youth. Programmes grounded in cultural safety and co-developed with communities have successfully reduced health disparities. More works of this kind are needed to reduce inequities in cardiometabolic diseases among Indigenous women and children worldwide.

Abstract
Background Cumulative evidence indicates an association between maternal overweight and gestational diabetes with delayed breastfeeding initiation; however, the presence of both conditions simultaneously has been little explored. This study aims to investigate the interaction between maternal overweight/obesity and gestational diabetes on breastfeeding initiation. Methods This study comprises data from the IVAPSA Birth Cohort, a prospective follow-up of mothers and their newborns. Two of the five groups from IVAPSA were evaluated, considering women with and without gestational diabetes. These women were further categorized according to their pre-pregnancy body mass index as normal weight or overweight/obese. Results 219 women were evaluated, 53.4% of them had pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and 32% had gestational diabetes. Most women were able to initiate breastfeeding within 12 hours from delivery (92.7%) and only eight (3.7%) women had not breastfed in the first 24 hours postpartum. Of these, seven were overweight/obese (77.8%) and five had gestational diabetes (66.7%), with four of them having overweight/obesity and gestational diabetes concomitantly. Women with both adverse conditions had an adjusted relative risk of delayed breastfeeding initiation of 1.072 (95% CI 1.006; 1.141), p = 0.032. Conclusions The results indicate an additive interaction between maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and gestational diabetes on delayed breastfeeding initiation.

Abstract
AIM It has previously been shown that breastfeeding may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in mothers with recent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This study compared the cessation of predominant breastfeeding in mothers with and without recent GDM in a multi-ethnic population. METHODS From May 2008 to May 2010, healthy pregnant women attending antenatal care provided by community health services in Eastern Oslo, Norway were recruited. We included 616 women-58% non-Western-and interviewed and examined them at a mean of 15 and 28 weeks of gestation and 14 weeks' postpartum. Cox regression models examined the association between GDM, as assessed by the 2013 World Health Organization criteria, and breastfeeding cessation. RESULTS Overall, 190 of the 616 (31%) mothers had GDM and they ended predominant breastfeeding earlier than mothers without GDM, with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.33 and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of 1.01-1.77. Mothers of South Asian origin ended predominant breastfeeding earlier than Western European mothers in the adjusted analysis (aHR 1.53, 95% CI: 1.04-2.25), but Middle Eastern mothers did not. CONCLUSION Recent gestational diabetes was associated with earlier cessation of predominant breastfeeding in Western European and non-Western women.
