Brain structure changes in nondemented seniors after six-month dance-exercise intervention

The effects of a six-month exercise intervention on white matter microstructure in older adults at risk for diabetes

Older adults with prediabetes or obesity (i.e., those at risk for diabetes) exhibit impaired structural brain networks. Given findings that resistance training (RT) can combat brain impairments in many populations, this study aimed to test the effects of this type of exercise on white matter microstructure in older adults at risk for diabetes. Seventeen community-dwelling older adults (mean age 67.8 ± 5.7, 52.9 % female) with prediabetes or obesity were randomly allocated to thrice weekly RT or balance and tone training (BAT; control group) for six months. Diffusion weighted imaging via a 3T scanner was used to assess changes in white matter parameters -fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), radial diffusivity (RD) - over time. Participants in the RT group showed no significant changes in FA but had increased MD and RD in various regions related to cognitive function including the cingulate gyrus. Participants in the control group had both increased and decreased FA depending on the specific white matter tracts; increased FA was seen in areas related to motor coordination such as the middle cerebellar peduncle. The control group also exhibited decreased MD and RD in areas responsible for motor function (e.g., left anterior limb of the internal capsule). We conclude that both resistance and balance exercises result in changes in white matter microstructure albeit in divergent tracts that may be linked to the specific exercises performed.

Physical exercise for brain plasticity promotion an overview of the underlying oscillatory mechanism

The global recognition of the importance of physical exercise (PE) for human health has resulted in increased research on its effects on cortical activity. Neural oscillations, which are prominent features of brain activity, serve as crucial indicators for studying the effects of PE on brain function. Existing studies support the idea that PE modifies various types of neural oscillations. While EEG-related literature in exercise science exists, a comprehensive review of the effects of exercise specifically in healthy populations has not yet been conducted. Given the demonstrated influence of exercise on neural plasticity, particularly cortical oscillatory activity, it is imperative to consolidate research on this phenomenon. Therefore, this review aims to summarize numerous PE studies on neuromodulatory mechanisms in the brain over the past decade, covering (1) effects of resistance and aerobic training on brain health via neural oscillations; (2) how mind-body exercise affects human neural activity and cognitive functioning; (3) age-Related effects of PE on brain health and neurodegenerative disease rehabilitation via neural oscillation mechanisms; and (4) conclusion and future direction. In conclusion, the effect of PE on cortical activity is a multifaceted process, and this review seeks to comprehensively examine and summarize existing studies' understanding of how PE regulates neural activity in the brain, providing a more scientific theoretical foundation for the development of personalized PE programs and further research.

Moving Towards a Medicine of Dance: A Scoping Review of Characteristics of Dance Interventions Targeting Older Adults and a Theoretical Framework

Background

Dance combines cultural and aesthetic elements with behaviors important for brain health, including physical activity, social engagement, and cognitive challenge. Therefore, dance could positively impact public health given the rapidly aging population, increasing incidence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and lack of uptake of exercise in many older adults. Despite a high volume of literature, existing literature does not support evidence-based guidelines for dance to support healthy aging.

Objective

To conduct a scoping review of the dance intervention literature in older adults and provide information to facilitate a more consistent approach among scientists in designing dance interventions for older adults that stimulate physical and neurocognitive health adaptations.

Methods

Study characteristics (sample size, population, study design, outcomes, intervention details) were ascertained from 112 separate studies of dance reported in 127 papers that reported outcomes important for brain health (cardiorespiratory fitness, balance and mobility, cognition, mood, and quality of life).

Results

High heterogeneity across studies was evident. Class frequency ranged from < 1 to 5 classes per week, class length from 30-120 minutes, and intervention duration from 2 weeks to 18 months. Studies often did not randomize participants, had small (< 30) sample sizes, and used varied comparator conditions. Over 50 tests of cognition, 40 dance forms, and 30 tests of mobility were identified.

Conclusions

Based on these results, important future directions are establishing common data elements, developing intervention mapping and mechanistic modeling, and testing dosing parameters to strengthen and focus trial design of future studies and generate evidence-based guidelines for dance.

Temporal Interactions between Maintenance of Cerebral Cortex Thickness and Physical Activity from an Individual Person Micro-Longitudinal Perspective and Implications for Precision Medicine

Maintenance of brain structure is essential for neurocognitive health. Precision medicine has interests in understanding how maintenance of an individual person's brain, including cerebral cortical structure, interacts with lifestyle factors like physical activity. Cortical structure, including cortical thickness, has recognized relationships with physical activity, but concepts of these relationships come from group, not individual, focused findings. Whether or how group-focused concepts apply to an individual person is fundamental to precision medicine interests but remains unclear. This issue was studied in a healthy man using concurrent micro-longitudinal tracking of magnetic resonance imaging-defined cortical thickness and accelerometer-defined steps/day over six months. These data permitted detailed examination of temporal relationships between thickness maintenance and physical activity at an individual level. Regression analyses revealed graded significant and trend-level temporal interactions between preceding activity vs. subsequent thickness maintenance and between preceding thickness maintenance vs. subsequent activity. Interactions were bidirectional, delayed/prolonged over days/weeks, positive, bilateral, directionally asymmetric, and limited in strength. These novel individual-focused findings in some ways are predicted, but in other ways remain unaddressed or undetected, by group-focused work. We suggest that individual-focused concepts of temporal interactions between maintenance of cortical structure and activity can provide needed new insight for personalized tailoring of physical activity, cortical, and neurocognitive health.

It underscores the importance of considering cultural and gender perspectives in sports psychology, advocating for an integrated physical-psychological approach to promote overall well-being.

Exploratory analysis of cortical thickness in low- and high-fit young adults

OBJECTIVE

Studies have shown changes in the human brain associated with physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The effects of CRF on cortical thickness have been well-described in older adults, where a positive association between CRF and cortical thickness has been reported, but the impact of sustained aerobic activity in young adults remains poorly described. Here, exploratory analysis was performed on cortical thickness data that was collected in groups of fit and sedentary young adults.

METHODS

Twenty healthy sedentary individuals (<2 h/week physical activity) were compared to 20 active individuals (>6 h/week physical activity) and cortical thickness was measured in 34 cortical areas. Cortical thickness values were compared between groups, and correlations between cortical thickness and VO2 max were tested.

RESULTS

Cardiorespiratory fitness was significantly higher in active individuals compared to sedentary individuals. Cortical thickness was lower in regions of the left (lateral and medial orbitofrontal cortex, pars orbitalis, pars triangularis, rostral anterior cingulate cortex, superior temporal cortex and frontal pole) and right (lateral and medial orbitofrontal cortex and pars opercularis) hemispheres. Only the left frontal pole and right lateral orbitofrontal cortical thickness remained significant after false discovery rate correction. Negative correlations were observed between VO2 max and cortical thickness in the left (frontal pole) and right (caudal anterior cingulate and medial orbitofrontal cortex) hemispheres.

CONCLUSION

The present exploratory analysis supports previous findings suggesting that neuroplastic effects of cardiorespiratory fitness may be attenuated in young compared with older individuals, underscoring a moderating effect of age on the relationship between fitness and cortical thickness.

Overnight olfactory enrichment using an odorant diffuser improves memory and modifies the uncinate fasciculus in older adults

OBJECTIVE

Cognitive loss in older adults is a growing issue in our society, and there is a need to develop inexpensive, simple, effective in-home treatments. This study was conducted to explore the use of olfactory enrichment at night to improve cognitive ability in healthy older adults.

METHODS

Male and female older adults (N = 43), age 60-85, were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to an Olfactory Enriched or Control group. Individuals in the enriched group were exposed to 7 different odorants a week, one per night, for 2 h, using an odorant diffuser. Individuals in the control group had the same experience with de minimis amounts of odorant. Neuropsychological assessments and fMRI scans were administered at the beginning of the study and after 6 months.

RESULTS

A statistically significant 226% improvement was observed in the enriched group compared to the control group on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test and improved functioning was observed in the left uncinate fasciculus, as assessed by mean diffusivity.

CONCLUSION

Minimal olfactory enrichment administered at night produces improvements in both cognitive and neural functioning. Thus, olfactory enrichment may provide an effective and low-effort pathway to improved brain health.

The Neuroscience of Dance: A Conceptual Framework and Systematic Review

Ancient and culturally universal, dance pervades many areas of life and has multiple benefits. In this article, we provide a conceptual framework and systematic review, as a guide for researching the neuroscience of dance. We identified relevant articles following PRISMA guidelines, and summarised and evaluated all original results. We identified avenues for future research in: the interactive and collective aspects of dance; groove; dance performance; dance observation; and dance therapy. Furthermore, the interactive and collective aspects of dance constitute a vital part of the field but have received almost no attention from a neuroscientific perspective so far. Dance and music engage overlapping brain networks, including common regions involved in perception, action, and emotion. In music and dance, rhythm, melody, and harmony are processed in an active, sustained pleasure cycle giving rise to action, emotion, and learning, led by activity in specific hedonic brain networks. The neuroscience of dance is an exciting field, which may yield information concerning links between psychological processes and behaviour, human flourishing, and the concept of eudaimonia.

Cross-sectional associations between cortical thickness and physical activity in older adults with spontaneous memory complaints: The MAPT Study

BACKGROUND

Age-related changes in brain structure may constitute the starting point for cerebral function alteration. Physical activity (PA) demonstrated favorable associations with total brain volume, but its relationship with cortical thickness (CT) remains unclear. We investigated the cross-sectional associations between PA level and CT in community-dwelling people aged 70 years and older.

METHODS

A total of 403 older adults aged 74.8 ± 4.0 years (mean ± SD) who underwent a baseline magnetic resonance imaging examination and who had data on PA and confounders were included. PA was assessed with a questionnaire. Participants were categorized according to PA levels. Multiple linear regressions were used to compare the brain CT (mm) of the inactive group (no PA at all) with 6 active groups (growing PA levels) in 34 regions of interest.

RESULTS

Compared with inactive persons, people who achieved PA at a level of 1500-1999 metabolic equivalent task-min/week (i.e., about 6-7 h of brisk walking for exercise and those who achieved it at 2000-2999 metabolic equivalent task-min/week (i.e., 8-11 h of brisk walking for exercise) had higher CT in the fusiform gyrus and the temporal pole. Additionally, dose-response associations between PA and CT were found in the fusiform gyrus (B = 0.011, SE = 0.004, adj. p = 0.035), the temporal pole (B = 0.026, SE = 0.009, adj. p = 0.048), and the caudal middle frontal gyrus, the entorhinal, medial orbitofrontal, lateral occipital, and insular cortices.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates a positive association between PA level and CT in temporal areas such as the fusiform gyrus, a brain region often associated to Alzheimer's disease in people aged 70 years and older. Future investigations focusing on PA type may help to fulfil remaining knowledge gaps in this field.

IMOVE: Protocol for a randomized, controlled 2x2 factorial trial of improvisational movement and social engagement interventions in older adults with early Alzheimer's disease

Background

In addition to cognitive impairment, people with Alzheimer's disease (PWAD) experience neuropsychiatric symptoms (e.g., apathy, depression), altered gait, and poor balance that further diminish their quality of life (QoL). Here, we describe a unique, randomized, controlled trial to test the hypothesis that both movement and social engagement aspects of a group dance intervention alter the connectivity of key brain networks involved in motor and social-emotional functioning and lead to improved QoL in PWAD.

Methods

IMOVE (NCT03333837) was a single-center, randomized, controlled 2x2 factorial trial that assigned PWAD/caregiver dyads to one of 4 study conditions (Movement Group, Movement Alone, Social Group, or Usual Care control). The Movement Group participated in twice-weekly group improvisational dance (IMPROVment® Method) classes for 12 weeks. The Movement Alone intervention captured the same dance movement and auditory stimuli as the group class without social interaction, and the Social Group used improvisational party games to recapitulate the fun and playfulness of the Movement Group without the movement. The primary outcome was change in QoL among PWAD. Key secondary outcomes were functional brain network measures assessed using graph-theory analysis of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans, as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms, gait, and balance.

Results

A total of 111 dyads were randomized; 89 completed the study, despite interruption and modification of the protocol due to COVID-19 restrictions (see companion paper by Fanning et al.). The data are being analyzed and will be submitted for publication in 2023.

Chronic effects of different exercise types on brain activity in healthy older adults and those with Parkinson’s disease: A systematic review

Objective: This study aimed to compare the regulation of brain activity by different kinds of long-term exercises (Tai Chi, treadmill training, and dancing) in healthy older adults and those with PD.

Methods: From January 2000 to October 2021, the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched. All articles were screened throughout the inclusion and exclusion criteria, which was followed by PICOS criteria. Finally, all articles were systematically reviewed with analyses.

Results: 29 studies were identified for this review, 24 of which were finally included in a group of healthy older adults, and five of which in a group of people with PD. All studies showed that significant changes were showed on people with PD and healthy older adults’ brain activity after three terms of the exercises we chose. An inverse change trend on the functional connectivity in people with PD was observed after treadmill training, whereas increased brain activity, cognitive function, memory, and emotion were noticed in healthy older adults.

Conclusion: Our findings suggest that different patterns of brain activity were also observed between healthy older adults and people with PD after treadmill training. However, more robust evidence and comprehensive studies are needed to determine if there is a difference between healthy older adults and people with PD.

Dance movement therapy for neurodegenerative diseases: A systematic review

Background

The proportion of the world's elderly population continues to rise, and the treatment and improvement of neurodegenerative diseases have become issue of public health importance as people live longer and many countries have aging populations. This systematic review aims to discuss the effects of dance movement therapy (DMT) on motor function, cognitive deficit, mood, and quality of life in people with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods

Two reviewers independently conducted systematic search on the Cochrane library, PubMed database, Web of Science Core Collection database, and Physiotherapy Evidence database until February 1, 2022. Only systematic analyses and randomized controlled trials were included and further analyzed.

Results

Thirty-three studies on PD, 16 studies on MCI, 4 studies on AD were obtained. This systematic review found that DMT substantially improved the global cognitive function, memory, and executive function on the population with MCI. Compared with the non-dance group, DMT remarkably improved general disease condition, balance, and gait for individuals with PD. The evidence of the efficacy of DMT on AD is insufficient, and further research is needed.

Conclusion

DMT can effectively improve the motor function and cognitive deficits in neurodegenerative diseases. Positive effects of DMT on the mood and quality of life in ND patients are controversial and require further evidence. Future research on the effects of DMT on AD requires scientific design, large sample size, long-term comprehensive intervention, and clear reporting standards.

Dance therapy and cognitive impairment in older people: A review of clinical data

ABSTRACT The growing interest for nonpharmacological treatment alternatives to older people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia has increased exponentially for the past few years; in this context, dance therapy is an effective therapeutic tool in improving the cognition of older people. The aim of this study was to verify whether dance therapy is a viable tool in promoting benefits with regard to the cognition and mood of older people with cognitive impairment. A database search covering the past 10 years was carried out. Result: The search found 193 papers; after title, abstract, and duplicity analysis, 14 of those were selected, of which 10 were fully revised. The studies showed positive results regarding the improvement of cognitive function after dance stimulations, as well as beneficial effects on the mood of older people with cognitive impairment.

Senior Women's Dance: From Pleasure to Emancipation

The aim of this paper is to capture older adult women’s experience of dance. To this purpose, a qualitative research study was carried out with members of the ‘Gracje’ dance group. The study used Jürgen Habermas’s theory of communicative action as its theoretical underpinnings. The focus was on the models of action and validity claims expressed in language (narrative). In this theoretical framework, dancing activity has been shown as promoting not only physical health and mental wellbeing but also social involvement. Our study has found that, in and through dance, the older adults primarily realised their claims to pleasure, attractiveness, health and emancipation. This has considerably improved their bodily capacity and increased their self-esteem. However, what the older adults themselves find most important is that the realisation of these claims beneficially affects their interactions in family and neighbourly communities and facilitates their engagement in volunteer activities, helping people at risk of exclusion due to age and/or disability.

Effects of Two Short-Term Aerobic Exercises on Cognitive Function in Healthy Older Adults during COVID-19 Confinement in Japan: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Aerobic exercise improves executive function-which tends to decline with age-and dual-task training with aerobic exercise improves the global cognitive function. However, home-based older adults could not follow these programs due to social isolation during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Therefore, we conducted a single-blind randomized controlled trial with 88 healthy older adults without dementia or sarcopenia who were randomly assigned into the Nordic walking (aerobic exercise), dance (dual-task training with aerobic exercise), or control group. The participants in both exercise intervention groups trained for 30 min, three times per week, for 4 weeks. All groups consumed amino acid-containing foods three times per week. We found that both exercise intervention groups showed improvements in executive function, while the dance group showed additional improvement in global cognitive function. The dance group showed a higher maximum gait speed, greater improvement in imitation ability, and improved executive function and cognitive function than the Nordic walking group. The intervention programs did not significantly affect the muscle mass or muscle output than the control group; however, both programs improved the participant neurological functions such as the heel lift, with dance training being the most effective intervention. In conclusion, dance training effectively improves cognitive function.

Effects of traditional Cantonese opera songs on Cantonese-speaking, community-dwelling older adults' cognitive and psychological function, well-being, and health

Objectives: Experiencing multi-sensory cognitive stimulation through the enjoyment of Cantonese opera songs, with their lively rhythms, familiar folk tales, meaningful lyrics and pleasant scenarios, has the potential to increase neuroplasticity and prevent cognitive decline.Methods: This prospective pre- and post-test quasi-experimental randomised controlled trial design study aimed to explore the social benefits of older adults' active participation in practising Cantonese opera songs as compared with passive participation (as an audience) and a non-interventional control group on cognitive function psychological function, functional independence, well-being and health.Results: By recruiting a group of older adults who were receiving day activities social service in Hong Kong. Thirty participants were randomly allocated to active participation in Cantonese opera (ACO). They participated in practising Cantonese opera songs. Thirty-four participants were assigned to passive participation in Cantonese opera (PCO). They received passive intervention by listening to and appreciating the opera songs as a social event. Thirty-one participants were used as a control group and received no similar training. (Results) ACO caused a positive change in cognitive function as compared to PCO and to no intervention, which implies that active learning and practise of opera songs benefits global cognitive function. The psychological function of the participants in the PCO group showed an elevated positive affect and a reduced negative affect. A statistically significant difference was noted in the time effect among the physical domains of health status, functional independence and well-being of participants who underwent Cantonese opera intervention.

Evidence of cortical thickness increases in bilateral auditory brain structures following piano learning in older adults

Morphological differences in the auditory brain of musicians compared to nonmusicians are often associated with life-long musical activity. Cross-sectional studies, however, do not allow for any causal inferences, and most experimental studies testing music-driven adaptations investigated children. Although the importance of the age at which musical training begins is widely recognized to impact neuroplasticity, there have been few longitudinal studies examining music-related changes in the brains of older adults. Using magnetic resonance imaging, we measured cortical thickness (CT) of 12 auditory-related regions of interest before and after 6 months of musical instruction in 134 healthy, right-handed, normal-hearing, musically-naive older adults (64-76 years old). Prior to the study, all participants were randomly assigned to either piano training or to a musical culture/music listening group. In five regions-left Heschl's gyrus, left planum polare, bilateral superior temporal sulcus, and right Heschl's sulcus-we found an increase in CT in the piano training group compared with the musical culture group. Furthermore, CT of the right Heschl's gyrus could be identified as a morphological substrate supporting speech in noise perception. The results support the conclusion that playing an instrument is an effective stimulator for cortical plasticity, even in older adults.

Effect of 3-Month Aerobic Dance on Hippocampal Volume and Cognition in Elderly People With Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Controlled Trial

As an intermediate state between normal aging and dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), especially amnestic MCI (aMCI), is a key stage in the prevention and intervention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Whether dancing could increase the hippocampal volume of seniors with aMCI remains debatable. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of aerobic dance on hippocampal volume and cognition after 3 months of aerobic dance in older adults with aMCI. In this randomized controlled trial, 68 elderly people with aMCI were randomized to either the aerobic dance group or the control group using a 1:1 allocation ratio. Ultimately, 62 of 68 participants completed this study, and the MRI data of 54 participants were included. A specially designed aerobic dance routine was performed by the dance group three times per week for 3 months, and all participants received monthly healthcare education after inclusion. MRI with a 3.0T MRI scanner and cognitive assessments were performed before and after intervention. High-resolution three-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted anatomical images were acquired for the analysis of hippocampal volume. A total of 35 participants (mean age: 71.51 ± 6.62 years) were randomized into the aerobic dance group and 33 participants (mean age: 69.82 ± 7.74 years) into the control group. A multiple linear regression model was used to detect the association between intervention and the difference of hippocampal volumes as well as the change of cognitive scores at baseline and after 3 months. The intervention group showed greater right hippocampal volume (β [95% CI]: 0.379 [0.117, 0.488], p = 0.002) and total hippocampal volume (β [95% CI]: 0.344 [0.082, 0.446], p = 0.005) compared to the control group. No significant association of age or gender was found with unilateral or global hippocampal volume. There was a correlation between episodic memory and intervention, as the intervention group showed a higher Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised Logical Memory (WMS-RLM) score (β [95% CI]: 0.326 [1.005, 6.773], p = 0.009). Furthermore, an increase in age may cause a decrease in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score (β [95% CI]: −0.366 [−0.151, −0.034], p = 0.002). In conclusion, 3 months of aerobic dance could increase the right and total hippocampal volumes and improve episodic memory in elderly persons with aMCI.

Improvisational Movement to Improve Quality of Life in Older Adults With Early-Stage Dementia: A Pilot Study

Alzheimer's disease has profound effects on quality of life, affecting not only cognition, but mobility and opportunities for social engagement. Dance is a form of movement that may be uniquely suited to help maintain quality of life for older adults, including those with dementia, because it inherently incorporates movement, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation. Here, we describe the methods and results of the pilot study for the IMOVE trial (NCT03333837, www.clinicaltrials.gov), a clinical trial designed to use improvisational dance classes to test the effects of movement and social engagement in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early-stage dementia. The pilot study was an 8-week investigation into the feasibility and potential effects of an improvisational dance intervention on people with MCI or early-stage dementia (PWD/MCI) and their caregivers (CG). The pilot aimed to assess changes in quality of life, balance, mood, and functional brain networks in PWD/MCI and their CG. Participants were recruited as dyads (pairs) that included one PWD/MCI and one CG. Ten total dyads were enrolled in the pilot study with five dyads assigned to the usual care control group and five dyads participating in the dance intervention. The intervention arm met twice weekly for 60 min for 8 weeks. Attendance and quality of life assessed with the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease (QoL-AD) questionnaire were the primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes included balance, mood and brain network connectivity assessed through graph theory analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Class attendance was 96% and qualitative feedback reflected participants felt socially connected to the group. Increases in quality of life and balance were observed, but not mood. Brain imaging analysis showed increases in multiple brain network characteristics, including global efficiency and modularity. Further investigation into the positive effects of this dance intervention on both imaging and non-imaging metrics will be carried out on the full clinical trial data. Results from the trial are expected in the summer of 2022.

Evidence for exercise-related plasticity in functional and structural neural network connectivity

The number of studies investigating exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)-related changes in the functional and structural organization of brain networks continues to rise. Functional and structural connectivity are critical biomarkers for brain health and many exercise-related benefits on the brain are better represented by network dynamics. Here, we reviewed the neuroimaging literature to better understand how exercise or CRF may facilitate and maintain the efficiency and integrity of functional and structural aspects of brain networks in both younger and older adults. Converging evidence suggests that increased exercise performance and CRF modulate functional connectivity of the brain in a way that corresponds to behavioral changes such as cognitive and motor performance improvements. Similarly, greater physical activity levels and CRF are associated with better cognitive and motor function, which may be brought about by enhanced structural network integrity. This review will provide a comprehensive understanding of trends in exercise-network studies as well as future directions based on the gaps in knowledge that are currently present in the literature.

Dance Intervention Impact on Brain Plasticity: A Randomized 6-Month fMRI Study in Non-expert Older Adults

Background: Dance is a complex activity combining physical exercise with cognitive, social, and artistic stimulation.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the effects of dance intervention (DI) on intra and inter-network resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) and its association to cognitive changes in a group of non-demented elderly participants.

Methods: Participants were randomly assigned into two groups: DI and life as usual (LAU). Six-month-long DI consisted of supervised 60 min lessons three times per week. Resting-state fMRI data were processed using independent component analysis to evaluate the intra and inter-network connectivity of large-scale brain networks. Interaction between group (DI, LAU) and visit (baseline, follow-up) was assessed using ANOVA, and DI-induced changes in rs-FC were correlated with cognitive outcomes.

Results: Data were analyzed in 68 participants (DI; n = 36 and LAU; n = 32). A significant behavioral effect was found in the attention domain, with Z scores increasing in the DI group and decreasing in the LAU group (p = 0.017). The DI as compared to LAU led to a significant rs-FC increase of the default mode network (DMN) and specific inter-network pairings, including insulo-opercular and right frontoparietal/frontoparietal control networks (p = 0.019 and p = 0.023), visual and language/DMN networks (p = 0.012 and p = 0.015), and cerebellar and visual/language networks (p = 0.015 and p = 0.003). The crosstalk of the insulo-opercular and right frontoparietal networks were associated with attention/executive domain Z-scores (R = 0.401, p = 0.015, and R = 0.412, p = 0.012).

Conclusion: The DI led to intervention-specific complex brain plasticity changes that were of cognitive relevance.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal interaction effects of physical activity and APOE-ε4 on white matter integrity in older adults: The MAPT study

BACKGROUND

Physical activity (PA) has been shown to modulate the detrimental effect of carrying the apolipoprotein-E epsilon 4 (APOE-ɛ4) allele on brain structure. However, the current literature mainly provides cross-sectional data, and longitudinal studies investigating the interaction between genotype and PA on white matter (WM) integrity are lacking.

OBJECTIVES

We investigated both the cross-sectional and the longitudinal interactive effects of APOE-ɛ4 and PA on WM integrity in older adults.

METHODS

Fractional anisotropy, as well as axial, radial, and mean diffusivity, extracted from brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were used to assess WM integrity in non-demented older adults. They were categorized according to their APOE-ɛ4 status (carriers vs. non-carriers), and their level of total (TPA), moderate to vigorous (MVPA) and light (LPA) PA were assessed using a questionnaire. Mixed model regressions were performed to test the interactive effects of APOE-ɛ4 status and PA on WM integrity at baseline and over a 3-year follow-up.

RESULTS

190 subjects with a mean age 74.5 years (SD = 3.9) were examined. Despite a lack of cross-sectional associations, sensitivity analyses revealed that, in the carrier group only, higher levels of LPA, but not MVPA, were mainly associated with higher axial and mean diffusivity values over time.

CONCLUSIONS

This study partially confirms the previously reported interactive associations between PA, APOE-ɛ4 genotype and WM integrity, supporting the hypothesis that PA may protect against fiber loss in WM tracts containing crossing fibers. Future studies assessing sedentary behaviors in addition to PA could bring relevant contributions to the field. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER FROM CLINICALTRIALS.GOV: NCT00672685.

Impact of cognitive reserve on dance intervention-induced changes in brain plasticity

Dance is a complex sensorimotor activity with positive effects on physical fitness, cognition, and brain plasticity in the aging population. We explored whether individual levels of cognitive reserve (CR) proxied by education moderate dance intervention (DI)-induced plasticity assessed by resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) changes of the sensorimotor network (SMN), and between the dorsal attention network (DAN) and anterior default mode network (aDMN). Our cohort consisted of 99 subjects, randomly assigned to either a DI group who underwent a 6-month intervention (n = 49, M_age = 69.02 ± 5.40) or a control group (n = 50, M_age = 69.37 ± 6.10). Moderation analyses revealed that CR moderated DI-induced increase of the SMN rs-FC with significant changes observed in participants with ≥ 15 years of education (b = 0.05, t(62) = 3.17, p = 0.002). Only DI alone was a significant predictor of the DAN-aDMN crosstalk change (b = 0.06, t(64) = 2.16, p = 0.035). The rs-FC increase in the SMN was correlated with an improved physical fitness measure, and changes in the DAN-aDMN connectivity were linked to better performance on figural fluency. Consistent with the passive CR hypothesis, we observed that CR correlated only with baseline behavioral scores, not their change.

Dance, aging, and neuroplasticity: an integrative review

This study aimed to summarize investigations that examined the benefits of dance on the neuroplasticity of older healthy adults, report structural and functional changes in the brain, and identify the strategies used in training protocols. The integrative review was perfomed in PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases, including randomized clinical trials, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional and cohort studies published in English, between 2010-2020. Twelve articles ware selected. Dance practice was associated with an improvement in functional connectivity, cognitive performance, and incresead brain volumes. Our results main supports studies on the plasticity induced by dance training in healthy older people.

How does physical activity benefit people living with dementia? A systematic review to identify the potential mechanisms of action

Purpose

One limitation of research that assesses the effectiveness of physical activity interventions for people with dementia is that most do not describe the intervention in sufficient detail to ascertain a theoretical basis or mechanism of action that determines the effective components. This paper aims to identify studies which evaluate the mechanisms of action of physical activity interventions for people with dementia, to further inform effective intervention development.

Design/methodology/approach

Papers were screened for evidence of evaluation of specific forms of physical activity, using pre-defined inclusion criteria. Analysis was conducted to ascertain if mechanisms of action were corroborated by data within and between studies.

Findings

The authors identified 26 studies with a measured mechanism of action; these related to the effects of physical activity on either neurological structure or endocrinal markers, including hormones. Physical activity had potential to reduce hippocampal atrophy, increase neural recruitment, activate the noradrenergic system and improve anti-inflammatory responses. While individual studies were hampered by small sample sizes, the body of evidence indicated that physical activity may have potential to delay cognitive decline.

Practical implications

Mechanisms of action in relation to dementia and physical activity are likely to be multifaceted, and physical activity may be protective against progression in the early stages of cognitive decline. Physical activity may be of greatest benefit if incorporated into on-going lifestyle, rather than engaged in for short periods, and combined with social interaction.

Originality/value

This paper is unique in its focus on the mechanisms of action of physical activity interventions for people with dementia.

The effect of dance interventions on cognition, neuroplasticity, physical function, depression, and quality of life for older adults with mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Mild cognitive impairment is an age-related cognitive disorder which is associated with frequent memory lapses, impaired judgement, and progressive functional decline. If untreated early, 39.2% of people with mild cognitive impairment could progress to develop dementia. However, there are currently no approved pharmacological interventions to treat the condition, which lead researchers to explore non-pharmacological options, such as dance therapy.

OBJECTIVES

This systematic review aimed to examine the effectiveness of dance interventions on cognition, neuroplasticity, physical function, depression, and quality of life in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

METHODS

Seven databases were systematically searched from their respective inception dates to 31 March 2020. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were screened and assessed for risk of bias. Eight RCTs evaluating dance interventions were included.

RESULTS

Results showed that dance interventions had a significant moderate effect on global cognition (SMD=0.54, Z = 3.55, p<0.001), significantly improved memory (SMD=0.33, Z = 3.97, p<0.001), visuospatial function (SMD=0.42, Z = 2.41, p = 0.02), and language (SMD=0.39, Z = 2.69, p = 0.007). We found that dance interventions produced a significant moderate effect on physical function (SMD=0.55, Z = 3.43, p<0.001), and a significant effect on quality of life (SMD=0.93, Z = 5.04, p<0.0.001).

CONCLUSION

Dance is a non-pharmacological and inexpensive intervention that can be implemented for older adults on a large scale. It can slow down the cognitive deterioration of older adults with mild cognitive impairment. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to the heterogeneity in intervention designs. Rigorous design studies with long-term follow-ups, neuroimaging, biological markers, and comprehensive neuropsychological assessment are required to understand the mechanism of dance interventions and demonstrate its efficacy for older adults with mild cognitive impairment. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020173659).

Development of Creative Intelligence in Physical Education and Sports Science Students through Body Expression

Body expression can enhance movement creativity and at the same time promote the growth of creative intelligence in college age. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of an intervention in body expression classes on the creative intelligence of university students. The 49 participants aged 19 to 38 years engaged in the body expression course for seven weeks, 3 h per week. The Creative Intelligence test (CREA) was applied as an evaluative method to obtain the initial data and after the intervention the test was reapplied. Pre- and post-test results were analyzed and compared by gender and type of sporting background (team or individual sports). The results indicate an overall improvement in creative intelligence with a significant difference between the two evaluations (p < 0.001). Women started with a higher score than men, and although an improvement in their final mean score could be observed, it was not significant. Men, on the other hand, had noted a significant increase (p < 0.001) of these values in the post-test. Regarding the type of sports, at the beginning of the study, both groups had similar results; however, in the final test, the team sports players obtained better scores. In conclusion, body expression, thanks to its content focused on artistic-creative development, has been shown to be useful in the general progression of creative intelligence in college age.

Association between social participation and cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults living alone: Analysis of a nationally representative survey

AIM

Social disengagement and cognitive decline commonly coexist among older adults, and living alone may be a significant risk factor for cognitive decline. This study aimed to identify differences in variables between older adults living alone and living with others; it also evaluated the association between social participation and cognitive function in older adults living alone.

METHODS

A secondary analysis was performed using the data collected between June and August 2017 of 10 299 nationally representative adults aged ≥65 years, obtained from the Korean Institute for Health and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Chi-square and t tests were used to compare characteristics between the two groups. Multiple linear regression analyses were utilized to examine the association between social participation and cognition, after adjusting for other variables.

RESULTS

Among 10 055 adults, 24% lived alone. Sociodemographic and health-related variables and social participation differed significantly between the two groups. On multiple linear regression, participation in fraternal group activity, religious activity, and contact with siblings and relatives through phone calls or letters contributed significantly to cognitive function in older adults living alone.

CONCLUSION

Nurses can encourage various intellectually and emotionally stimulating social activities, as they help to maintain and improve the cognitive function of older people living alone.
