Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation of children with disabilities is an indicator of social inclusion, health, and well-being, and its evaluation needs to be included in the clinical practice of rehabilitation professionals. OBJECTIVES To investigate the measurement properties of the Participation and Environment Measure - Children and Youth Brazilian version (PEM-CY Brazil). METHODS We used the PEM-CY to evaluate participation and environment of children with and without disabilities in the home, school, and community settings. Based on COSMIN guidelines, we analyzed two measurement properties: internal consistency for all domains using Cronbach's alpha; and construct (known-groups) validity, i.e., the degree to which instrument scores identify differences between groups. T-tests, Mann-Whitney, or Chi-square tests compared children with and without disabilities. RESULTS 101 Brazilian children (mean age=9.31 years) with (n = 62) and without (n = 39) disabilities were included. Internal consistency ranged from appropriate (0.70) to excellent (0.95) for all domains in all settings, except for Resources in the environment of the home setting (0.53). Regarding construct validity, PEM-CY participation scores were significantly different between groups in most domains. Children with disabilities were significantly less involved and participated in a smaller number of activities in all settings, in comparison to those without disabilities. The PEM-CY scores in all settings of the environment were significantly higher in the group of children without disabilities. CONCLUSION Preliminary support was provided for the internal consistency and construct (known-groups) validity of the PEM-CY Brazil to measure participation and the environment in the Brazilian context. The PEM-CY can therefore be used by rehabilitation professionals in Brazil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation in family, recreational activities and self-care is an integral part of health. It is also a main outcome of rehabilitation services for children and adolescents with disabilities. However, there are currently no available tools in Greek to assess participation in young children. METHODS The Child Engagement in Daily Life (CEDL) was cross-culturally translated into Greek using forward-backward translation, review by expert committee, pretest application and final review. Parents with children who have been diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) and were 18 months to 5 years old were recruited. Internal consistency was evaluated using the Cronbach alpha and test-retest reliability in 2 weeks using intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plot for the agreement of each domain score. Measurement error was assessed utilising the standard error of measurement (SEM) and the smallest detectable change (SDC) and interpretability was assessed using the floor and ceiling effects. Validity was evaluated using the 'known groups' method, that is, assessing parents of children with typical development (TD). RESULTS One hundred and seven children with CP (mean age 43.63 ± 13.5 months), Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I-V and 97 children with TD (mean age 43.63 ± 14.4 months) were included. Significant differences (p < 0.01) between children with CP and children with TD were recorded for all CEDL domains. Mean ± standard deviation of the CEDL domains 'frequency of participation', 'enjoyment of participation' and 'self-care' were 58.8 ± 14.5, 3.9 ± 0.9 and 49.7 ± 23.5, respectively for children with CP and 62.3 ± 9.1, 4.4 ± 0.9 and 74.2 ± 15 for children with TD. Internal consistency of all domains was high; Cronbach alpha for 'frequency of participation' was 0.83, for 'enjoyment of participation' was 0.76 and for 'self-care' was 0.92. Test-retest reliability (ICC) was excellent for the 'self-care' (0.95) and good for 'frequency of participation' and 'enjoyment of participation' domains (0.90 and 0.88, respectively) while Bland-Altman analysis revealed no systematic differences or bias between the two measurements. SEM was 0.8, 0.05 and 1.6 for frequency of participation, enjoyment and self-care with SDC of 2.4, 0.16 and 4.5, respectively. No relevant floor and ceiling effects were observed. CONCLUSION The Greek CEDL has good reliability, validity and interpretability. It can be used to evaluate participation in Greek young children with CP. Future studies should investigate the validity of this tool in longer periods and its responsiveness to intervention.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify and assess the clinimetric properties of psychological, cognitive, and social competence assessment tools relevant to physical activity for school-aged children (5-17 years) with neurodevelopmental disabilities. METHODS Seven electronic databases were searched. Study findings and methodologies were evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. Psychometric strength of assessment tools was determined using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation principles (GRADE) (Trial registration: CRD42020180616). RESULTS Study criteria were met by eight subscales from the BRIEF2, DMQ17, QI-Disability, SAID, and SDQ. Most subscales examined psychological competence (n = 5), with fewer addressing social competence (n = 2), or cognitive competence (n = 1). Validity was moderate to high strength for most subscales. Reliability was of moderate and unclear strength for two subscales. A five-level decision tree was devised to summarise: (1) physical literacy domains/elements, (2) populations, (3) assessment focus, (4) required resources, and (5) psychometric evidence. CONCLUSIONS Subscales are available to assess psychological, cognitive, or social competence. For school-aged children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, these have moderate to high strength psychometric support. A decision tree will assist practitioners in subscale selection. Future studies are needed to establish gold standard assessment of physical literacy for this population.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONPsychological Activity Competence can be measured for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, subscales from The Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second Edition (BRIEF2; The Dimensions of Mastery Questionnaire 17.0 (DMQ17); and The Quality of Life Inventory-Disability (QI-Disability).Cognitive Activity Competence can be measured using a subscale from The Scale of Attention in Intellectual Disability (SAID).Social Activity Competence can be measured using subscales from the BRIEF2, and The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).Clinicians can use the Physical Literacy decision tree to guide selection of these tools.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies that have systematically reviewed the psychometric properties of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and subjective wellbeing instruments for adolescents with intellectual disabilities narrowly focus on disease or health-specific conditions. This review aimed to critically appraise the psychometric properties of self-report instruments used to measure HRQoL and subjective wellbeing of adolescents with intellectual disabilities. METHOD A systematic search was undertaken in four databases. The quality of the included studies and their psychometric properties was assessed according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments Risk of Bias checklist. RESULTS Seven studies reported psychometric properties of five different instruments. Only one instrument identified as having potential to be recommended for use but requires further validation research to assess its quality for this population. CONCLUSIONS There is insufficient evidence to support the recommendation of a self-report instrument to assess HRQoL and subjective wellbeing of adolescents with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) is the most widely used questionnaire for the assessment of children participation. While several cultural adaptations and translations exist, the quality of the methods used to produce them, as well as their psychometric properties, remains unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the different translated and/or culturally adapted versions of the CAPE for children and youth with and without disabilities. METHOD A search was performed in five electronic databases CINAHL (EBSCO), MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE (ELSEVIER), PSYCINFO (OVID), and WEB OF SCIENCE Core Collection (CLARIVATE), for articles available in French or English with the last update in July 2022. All studies related to a cultural adaptation and/or translation of the CAPE were retained and evaluated based on established guidelines for cross-cultural adaptations and measurement properties. The extraction was done independently by two authors. A critical appraisal of translation and psychometric properties methods was performed. Critical appraisal of the articles was done using the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures tool and the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) methodology. RESULTS The search identified 642 studies (321 duplicates removed), 16 of which underwent full-text review. Nine studies met all inclusion criteria and underwent analysis. According to the recommended steps for cross-cultural adaptations, one study performed 100% of the steps and two others performed 80%. None of the studies met all the recommendations for the evaluation of psychometric properties. A full evaluation of reliability and internal consistency were reported by 74% of studies. None of the studies reported a full evaluation of responsiveness, agreement and/or construct validity. CONCLUSIONS This review demonstrated limitations in the robustness of the methods used to develop and evaluate translated and culturally adapted versions of CAPE. To ensure valid and reliable results when conducting future research using the CAPE, it is recommended to fully evaluate the psychometric properties of the existing versions and to produce other translated and culturally adapted versions of the questionnaire.

Abstract
There is a shortage of research on the participation of children with intellectual disabilities from middle-income countries. Also, most child assessments measure either the child’s or the caregiver’s perceptions of participation. Participation, however, is an amalgamation of both perspectives, as caregivers play a significant role in both accessing and facilitating opportunities for children’s participation. This paper reports on both perceptions—those of children with intellectual disabilities and those of their caregiver, in India and South Africa. A quantitative group comparison was conducted using the Children’s Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) that was translated into Bengali and four South African languages. One hundred child–caregiver dyads from India and 123 pairs from South Africa participated in the study. The results revealed interesting similarities and differences in participation patterns, both between countries and between children and their caregivers. Differences between countries were mostly related to the intensity of participation, with whom, and where participation occurred. Caregiver and child reports differed significantly regarding participation and the enjoyment of activities. This study emphasises the need for consideration of cultural differences when examining participation and suggests that a combined caregiver-and-child-reported approach may provide the broadest perspective on children’s participation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore how children with cerebral palsy (CP) experience participation in leisure activities and to describe the environmental barriers and facilitators. METHODS Sixteen children with cerebral palsy aged 7 to 17 years participated in 3 focus groups. Data were analyzed thematically by 3 researchers on the basis of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. RESULTS A total of 38 International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health categories were identified (4 linked to Body functions; 2 linked to Body structures; 8 linked to Activities & Participation, and 24 to Environmental factors: 10 facilitators and 14 barriers). The most mentioned categories were Voluntary movement control functions, Functions related to gait pattern, Structure of upper arm, Recreation and leisure, Nuclear family and finally, and Individual attitudes of acquaintances. CONCLUSIONS The main barriers identified by children with cerebral palsy highlight aspects of the physical, social, and attitudinal environment that could be modified to enhance participation in leisure activities.

Abstract
AIM To examine which instruments used to assess participation of children with acquired brain injury (ABI) or cerebral palsy (CP) align with attendance and/or involvement constructs of participation; and to systematically review measurement properties of these instruments in children with ABI or CP, to guide instrument selection. METHOD Five databases were searched. Instruments that quantified 'attendance' and/or 'involvement' aspects of participation according to the family of participation-related constructs were selected. Data on measurement properties were extracted and methodological quality of the studies assessed. RESULTS Thirty-seven instruments were used to assess participation in children with ABI or CP. Of those, 12 measured attendance and/or involvement. The reliability, validity, and responsiveness of eight of these instruments were examined in 14 studies with children with ABI or CP. Sufficient measurement properties were reported for most of the measures, but no instrument had been assessed on all relevant properties. Moreover, most psychometric studies have marked methodological limitations. INTERPRETATION Instruments to assess participation of children with ABI or CP should be selected carefully, as many available measures do not align with attendance and/or involvement. Evidence for measurement properties is limited, mainly caused by low methodological study quality. Future studies should follow recommended methodological guidelines. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS Twelve instruments used to assess participation of children with acquired brain injury (ABI) or cerebral palsy (CP) aligned with attendance/involvement. Seven instruments have some psychometric evidence supporting their use with children with CP. For children with ABI, only the Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation has shown preliminary evidence of measurement properties.

Abstract
Background: Children's play and leisure participation is often assessed by occupational therapists. As such, it is essential that therapists utilize play and leisure scales that are valid, reliable and responsive.Aim: To examine the convergent validity between the Children's Leisure Assessment Scale (CLASS) and Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment and Preferences for Activities of Children (CAPE/PAC).Methods: Forty healthy Australian children (60% female; mean age 9.2 ± 2.01 years) completed the CLASS and CAPE/PAC. Spearman's rho correlations with bootstrapping were completed.Results: A number of the CLASS and CAPE/PAC subscales were significantly correlated. The CAPE's overall scale scores and CLASS's instrumental indoor activities, outdoor activities and games and sport activities subscales were significantly correlated (p > 0.05). The CAPE's Social domain showed several significant correlations with the CLASS's instrumental indoor activities, outdoor activities and self-enrichment activities domains (p < 0.05). Statistically significant relationships were found between the CLASS's outdoor activity preference and the PAC's recreational, physical, formal, informal and overall performance scores (r = 0.466-0.773, p < 0.05).Conclusions and Significance: Preliminary evidence in support of the convergent validity between the CAPE/PAC and CLASS was obtained. Limitations include a small sample size and convenience sampling. Further investigation of the psychometric properties of the CAPE/PAC and CLASS are recommended.

Abstract
The Activity Card Sort (ACS) measures the level of participation, as perceived by each person which, unlike other scales, makes it both personal and significant. However, there is a limitation to applying the ACS to Spanish older adults as it is restricted to culturally relevant activities solely in the United States. Therefore, the aim of this study was to select activity items that reflected Spanish older adults' lifestyles in order to develop the Activity Card Sort-Spain Version (ACS-SP). Frequently, activities performed in Spain (n = 103) were listed in an initial draft. The Likert scale was administrated to a large group of Spanish nationals over the age of 60 years (n = 98) to establish which type of activities will be eventually included in the Spanish version. The final version was drawn up comprising 79 activities distributed between four performance areas. In addition, other activities that were not previously included by other assessment tools were considered and have been listed in this review, such as taking a nap, going out for a drink or “tapas,” or searching for a job. The gradual adaptation to ACS for Spaniards will make it possible to measure the level of an individual's participation within a community. However, further work on psychometric properties is needed.

Abstract
Background: Participation is a major pediatric rehabilitation goal according to The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Children and Youth version (ICF-CY). ICF-based leisure participation measures for Portuguese-speaking children with cerebral palsy are currently not available. The aim of this study is to assess validity and reliability of the Portuguese (European) version of the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE). Methods: CAPE Portuguese version was applied to 170 children with cerebral palsy (n = 69) and typical development (n = 101) aged between 8 and 18 years (mean = 12.5 years; SD = 2.91). Construct validity was assessed by using the know-groups method and the correlation between participation and quality of life. Reliability was determined by internal consistency and test-retest. Results: CAPE discriminates between participation scores of children with cerebral palsy and typical development. A positive correlation was found between participation frequency and physical well-being. Internal consistency was not entirely satisfactory but comparable with that from the original CAPE study. Test-retest reliability was considered good. Conclusions: CAPE Portuguese (European) version showed satisfactory validity and test-retest reliability to assess leisure participation in children with cerebral palsy and typical development aged between 8 and 18 years.

Abstract
PURPOSE To establish the construct validity and internal consistency of the Arabic Children Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) and Preferences for Activities of Children (PAC) and to determine the effects of age, gender, and disability status on diversity and intensity of participation. METHODS The World Health Organization guidelines for translation of measures were applied to translate the CAPE and PAC, 75 children with cerebral palsy (mean age = 10.7 ± 2.9 years) and 75 children with typical development (mean age = 10.8 ± 2.7 years) completed the translated measures. The construct validity of the translated measures was demonstrated by principle component analyses in addition to the known-groups method by examining the effects of age, gender, and presence of disability on diversity and intensity scores. The internal consistencies of the extracted components were examined by Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS Four components emerged: (1) physical activities; (2) home-based activities; (3) self-improvement activities; and (4) social activities. Cronbach's alpha varied from 0.61 (social activities) to 0.83 (physical activities). Age, gender, and disability were significant determinants of types of activities. CONCLUSIONS The Arabic CAPE and PAC are culturally valid in measuring participation of children with or without disabilities in Jordan. The child's age, gender, and disability should be considered to provide participation-based plans of care that are considerate for children and their families. Implications for rehabilitation The Arabic CAPE and PAC are culturally valid measures for participation of children with or without disabilities in Jordan. The Arabic CAPE and PAC measures can guide participation-based plans of care that are meaningful and considerate for children and their families. Child age and gender should be considered to provide appropriate activities and to facilitate participation of children with and without disabilities. Families and service providers in Jordon are encouraged to provide children opportunities to participate in desired physical, self-improvement, and social activities.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the level of agreement between reports of health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) obtained from children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) and their parents. We also examined the relationships between child and parent perception of the different domains of HR-QoL and participation dimensions. Sixty-nine children and adolescents with CP and their parents separately completed parallel forms of the KIDSCREEN questionnaire. The Spanish version of the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) was completed by the child/adolescent. Concordance between the children's and the parents' HR-QoL scores was analyzed via Pearson and intraclass correlations. Differences in means were tested using paired Student's t-tests. Chi-square tests were using to assess the incidence of personal variables in the agreement and disagreement of children-parents' responses. The relationships between HR-QoL and leisure participation was confirmed with Pearson's correlation coefficients. Correlations between child and parent HR-QoL scores were small in 7 domains, medium in 2 and large in the Social Support & Peers domain. Children reported significantly better HR-QoL than their parents did. Participation was positively associated with specific domains of HR-QoL, but only weakly, and there were discrepancies between parent and child reports of HR-QoL. These findings provide interesting information about the importance of hearing the voices of children and adolescents with CP to promote HR-QoL and leisure participation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The introduction of the International Classification of Functioning, Disabilities and Health of the World Health Organization in 2001 made social participation a major rehabilitation outcome and the ultimate goal of rehabilitation services. There is no available instrument to measure the youth participation in leisure activities apart from asking the youth themselves. The goal of this study was to present a German version of the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment and Preferences for Activities of Children (CAPE/PAC). METHODS The CAPE/PAC questionnaire was translated into German, a cultural adaptation process was designed and a reliability study was conducted. One hundred and fifty-two youths with and without disabilities, with a mean age of 15.2 years (standard deviation 1.7), participated in the study. The participants completed CAPE and PAC twice within 4 weeks. Reliability was examined by intraclass correlation coefficients, standard error of measurement, smallest detectable change and Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS The absolute values of participation differ between the typically developed youth group and those with impairments; the reliability of the CAPE/PAC is comparable in both groups. Intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.43 to 0.74 for the CAPE and from 0.71 to 0.83 for the PAC in all participants. The alpha values for internal consistency ranged from 0.42 to 0.82 for the CAPE and from 0.65 to 0.92 for the PAC. CONCLUSIONS The German version of the PAC showed satisfactory reliability; however, reliability was not satisfactory for all scores of the CAPE, but comparable with versions in other languages. The need for newly developed participation measurements requires further discussion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge about patterns of participation can be used to highlight groups of children and adolescents with low attendance, or low involvement in activities and who may therefore be at risk of mental or physical health concerns. This study used the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) and the Preferences for Activity of Children (PAC) to describe the patterns of participation of children and adolescents in activities outside mandated school in Victoria, Australia. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of Victorian children and adolescents was conducted. Eligible participants were aged 6 to 18 years, enrolled in mainstream schools, with sufficient English language skills to complete the questionnaires. Parents of participants completed a demographic questionnaire. Sample representativeness was assessed against Victorian population statistics for gender, school type, language spoken at home and socio-economic status. Data for the CAPE and PAC were summarised using descriptive statistics. Patterns of activity diversity by age were assessed using curve estimation, with additional analyses to describe differences between genders. RESULTS Of 9337 potential participants targeted through school advertising, 512 agreed (5.5 % consent rate), and 422 questionnaires were returned (82.4 % response rate). The sample was representative in terms of gender and language. Compared to the Victorian population, a slightly higher proportion of participants attended Government and Catholic schools and there was evidence of marginally greater socioeconomic resources than the population average. A broad range of recreational, active physical, social, skill-based and self-improvement activities were completed by all age groups. There was a reduction in the number and enjoyment of recreational activities with increasing age. In contrast, there was relative stability in intensity, frequency and preference scores across the age-groups for all activity types. Female participants typically took part in more activities (higher diversity scores), more intensely, with higher enjoyment and had higher preferences for each activity type than males, with the exception of active physical activities. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence of the participation patterns of typically developing children and adolescents in activities outside school. The findings have implications for researchers, clinicians and educators for comparative purposes and to inform future research.

Abstract
Introduction Improving occupational performance is a key service of occupational therapists and client-centred approach to care is central to clinical practice. As such it is important to comprehensively evaluate the quality of psychometric properties reported across measures of occupational performance; in order to guide assessment and treatment planning. Objective To systematically review the literature on the psychometric properties of child-report measures of occupational performance for children ages 2–18 years. Methods A systematic search of the following six electronic databases was conducted: CINAHL; PsycINFO; EMBASE; PubMed; the Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI) database; and Google Scholar. The quality of the studies was evaluated against the COSMIN taxonomy of measurement properties and the overall quality of psychometric properties was evaluated using pre-set psychometric criteria. Results Fifteen articles and one manual were reviewed to assess the psychometric properties of the six measures–the PEGS, MMD, CAPE, PAC, COSA, and OSA- which met the inclusion criteria. Most of the measures had conducted good quality studies to evaluate the psychometric properties of measures (PEGS, CAPE, PAC, OSA); however, the quality of the studies for two of these measures was relatively weak (MMD, COSA). When integrating the quality of the psychometric properties of the measures with the quality of the studies, the PAC stood out as having superior psychometric qualities. Conclusions The overall quality of the psychometric properties of most measures was limited. There is a need for continuing research into the psychometric properties of child-report measures of occupational performance, and to revise and improve the psychometric properties of existing measures.

Abstract
PURPOSE To critically appraise the measurement properties of questionnaires measuring participation in children and adolescents (0-18 years) with a disability. METHODS Bibliographic databases were searched for studies evaluating the measurement properties of self-report or parent-report questionnaires measuring participation in children and adolescents (0-18 years) with a disability. The methodological quality of the included studies and the results of the measurement properties were evaluated using a checklist developed on consensus-based standards. RESULTS The search strategy identified 3,977 unique publications, of which 22 were selected; these articles evaluated the development and measurement properties of eight different questionnaires. The Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation was evaluated most extensively, generally showing moderate positive results on content validity, internal consistency, reliability and construct validity. The remaining questionnaires also demonstrated positive results. However, at least 50 % of the measurement properties per questionnaire were not (or only poorly) assessed. CONCLUSIONS Studies of high methodological quality, using modern statistical methods, are needed to accurately assess the measurement properties of currently available questionnaires. Moreover, consensus is required on the definition of the construct 'participation' to determine content validity and to enable meaningful interpretation of outcomes.
