Abstract
Frequent use of methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) and MI in cosmetic products has been the main cause of widespread sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis to these preservatives (biocides). Their use in non-cosmetic products is also an important source of sensitization. Less is known about sensitization rates and use of benzisothiazolinone (BIT), octylisothiazolinone (OIT), and dichlorooctylisothiazolinone (DCOIT), which have never been permitted in cosmetic products in Europe. BIT and OIT have occasionally been routinely patch-tested. These preservatives are often used together in chemical products and articles. In this study, we review the occurrence of contact allergy to MI, BIT, OIT, and DCOIT over time, based on concomitant patch testing in large studies, and case reports. We review EU legislations, and we discuss the role of industry, regulators, and dermatology in prevention of sensitization and protection of health. The frequency of contact allergy to MI, BIT, and OIT has increased. The frequency of contact allergy to DCOIT is not known because it has seldom been patch-tested. Label information on isothiazolinones in chemical products and articles, irrespective of concentration, is required for assessment of relevance, information to patients, and avoidance of exposure and allergic contact dermatitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Isothiazolinones are a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE To examine the prevalence of positive patch test reactions to isothiazolinones from 2017-2020 and characterize isothiazolinone-allergic (Is+) patients compared with isothiazolinone nonallergic (Is-) patients. METHODS Retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 9028 patients patch tested to methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI)/methylisothiazolinone (MI) 0.02% aqueous, MI 0.2% aqueous, benzisothiazolinone (BIT) 0.1% petrolatum, and/or octylisothiazolinone (OIT) 0.025% petrolatum. Prevalence, reaction strength, concurrent reactions, clinical relevance, and source of allergens were tabulated. RESULTS In total, 21.9% (1976/9028) of patients had a positive reaction to 1 or more isothiazolinones. Positivity to MI was 14.4% (1296/9012), MCI/MI was 10.0% (903/9017), BIT was 8.6% (777/9018), and OIT was 05% (49/9028). Compared with Is-, Is+ patients were more likely to have occupational skin disease (16.5% vs 10.3%, P <.001), primary hand dermatitis (30.2% vs 19.7%, P <.001), and be >40 years (73.1% vs 61.9%, P <.001). Positive patch test reactions to >1 isothiazolinone occurred in 44.1% (871/1976) of Is+ patients. Testing solely to MCI/MI would miss 47.3% (611/1292) of MI and 60.1% (466/776) of BIT allergic reactions. LIMITATIONS Retrospective cross-sectional study design and lack of follow-up data. CONCLUSION Sensitization to isothiazolinones is high and concurrent sensitization to multiple isothiazolinone allergens is common.

Abstract
Compression therapy is a conservative therapy that can be used in many patients with dermatological conditions, especially those associated with edema. In addition to its well-established use in venous and lymphatic disorders, there is increasing evidence that compression therapy supports the healing of inflammatory dermatoses. The presence of edema, regardless of its etiology, is an indication for the use of compression therapy. Nowadays, a variety of materials and treatment options are available for compression therapy, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Often, compression therapy with low resting pressures is sufficient for effective therapy and is better tolerated by patients. The main contraindications to compression therapy are advanced peripheral arterial disease and decompensated heart failure. Individual factors and economic considerations should be taken into account when deciding on compression therapy with the patient. Patient self-management should be encouraged whenever possible. This requires education and support tools.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungDie Kompressionstherapie ist eine konservative Therapie, die bei vielen Patienten mit dermatologischen Krankheiten durchgeführt werden kann, insbesondere wenn diese mit Ödemen assoziiert sind. Neben den wissenschaftlich sehr gut belegten Indikationen bei venösen und lymphatischen Erkrankungen, gibt es auch zunehmend wissenschaftliche Hinweise, dass durch die Kompressionstherapie die Abheilung entzündlicher Dermatosen unterstützt wird. Wenn Ödeme vorliegen, handelt es sich, unabhängig von deren Genese, um einen Einsatz im Rahmen der Zulassung der Kompressionstherapie.Für die Kompressionstherapie stehen heute verschiedene Materialien und Versorgungsoptionen mit systemspezifischen Vor‐ und Nachteilen zur Verfügung. Oft ist eine Kompressionstherapie mit niedrigen Ruhedruckwerten für einen Therapieerfolg ausreichend und wird von den Patienten besser toleriert. Als wichtigste Kontraindikationen der Kompressionstherapie sind die fortgeschrittene periphere arterielle Verschlusskrankheit und die dekompensierte Herzinsuffizienz zu beachten.Bei der gemeinsam mit dem Patienten getroffenen Entscheidung für eine Kompressionstherapie, sollten individuelle Faktoren und wirtschaftliche Aspekte berücksichtigt werden. Wann immer möglich, ist ein Selbstmanagement des Patienten zu unterstützen. Hierfür sind Edukation und Hilfsmittel erforderlich.

Abstract
Contact allergy (sensitisation) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) resulting from it have a considerable public health impact. For the present review, all pertinent articles were systematically searched via Medline and Web of Science™; additionally, all available issues of the journals "Contact Dermatitis" and "Dermatitis" were manually searched, covering the years 2018-2019, thereby extending and re-focusing a previous similar review. New allergens, or previously described allergens found in a new exposure context or of other current importance, are described in sections according to substance classes, e.g., metals, preservatives, fragrances. As a common finding in many investigations, a lack of information on product composition has been noted, for instance, regarding a newly described allergen in canvas shoes (dimethylthiocarbamylbenzothiazole sulfide) and, most notably, absence of co-operation from manufacturers of glucose-monitoring devices and insulin pumps, respectively. These latter devices have been shown to cause severe ACD in a considerable number of diabetic patients caused by the liberation of isobornyl acrylate and N,N'-dimethylacrylamide, respectively, as demonstrated by an international collaboration between dermatologists and chemists. Improved and complete ingredient labelling for all types of products, and not just cosmetics, must be put on the legislative agenda.

Abstract
Biocides are frequently used in the manufacturing of textiles that are in direct contact with human skin. Recently regulated biocides do not have validated methods for testing; so, their presence cannot be estimated in the consumer products. Hence a rapid method was developed for the separation and quantitative analysis of biocide contents (2-methyl-4-isothaizolin (MIT), 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothaizolin-3-one (CIT), 2-octo-4-isothaizolin-3-one (OIT), and 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenxy) phenol (triclosan)) from the textile test specimens. Test specimens were extracted with methanolic sonication and purified by centrifugation and filtration. Biocide contents were separated at C18 column with 0.4% acetic acid: methanol (1 : 1 v/v) under isocratic mode and detected at 280 nm wavelength. Pretreatment factors such as extraction solvent, extraction method, dilution ratio, and extraction time were optimized initially and plotted calibration curve showed regression (r 2 ≥ 0.9995) in the range of 1.0-5.0 mg L-1. Recoveries were between 95% and 108% with the relative standard deviation ≤ 4%. Limits of detection (LODs) were between 0.06 mg L-1 and 0.12 mg L-1 and limits of quantification (LOQs) were between 0.21 mg L-1 and 0.38 mg L-1. From the results, conclusion was made that the method can achieve the purpose of quantitative detection and the analysis of real test specimens verified the reliability of this method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are limited data regarding the prevalence and concentration of isothiazolinone preservatives in consumer adhesives. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and concentration of 5 specific isothiazolinones (methylisothiazolinone [MI], methylchloroisothiazolinone [MCI], benzisothiazolinone [BIT], butyl BIT, and octylisothiazolinone) in US adhesives. METHODS Thirty-eight consumer adhesives were analyzed using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometry. Fisher exact tests were used to test for isothiazolinone content and: 1) glue format (2) application purpose and 3) extraction method. RESULTS Nineteen adhesives (50%) had at least 1 isothiazolinone, and 15 contained 2 isothiazolinones. Frequencies and concentrations were as follows: MI (44.7%; 4-133 ppm), MCI (31.6%; 7-27 ppm), BIT (15.8%; 10-86 ppm), and octylisothiazolinone (2.6%; 1 ppm). Butyl BIT was not detected in any of the adhesives. Format (stick vs liquid) was not statistically associated with isothiazolinone presence. At least half of adhesives in the following application purposes had at least 1 isothiazolinone: shoe, craft, fabric, and school. All-purpose glues had a statistically significant lower concentration of MI and MCI, whereas craft glues were associated with higher concentrations of MI and MCI. Compared with other glues, fabric adhesives were associated with a higher risk of containing BIT. CONCLUSIONS Half of the tested adhesives contained at least 1 isothiazolinone. Methylisothiazolinone and MCI were the most common. Consumers and dermatologists should be aware of adhesives as a source of isothiazolinones.

Abstract
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from isothiazolinones has frequently been described in the literature. Following an epidemic of sensitization to methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) in the 1980s, and more recently to MI, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission banned their use in leave-on products, while restricting that in rinse-off cosmetics. Despite a decreasing prevalence of ACD from MCI/MI and MI, cases caused by occupational exposure and non-cosmetic isothiazolinone sources are on the rise. Moreover, sensitization to newer and lesser known isothiazolinones has been reported. This paper reviews the epidemiology of contact allergy to different isothiazolinones, clinical presentation of isothiazolinone-induced ACD, most relevant sensitization sources and potential cross-reactions between isothiazolinone derivatives. It also provides an update on recent legislative measures.
