The effect of soil on human health: an overview

Vegetable and fruit wastes: Valuable source for organic fertilizer for effective growth of short-term crops: Solanum lycopersicum and Capsicum annum

Agriculture plays a vital role in the food security and economies of Asian countries. Annually, numerous metric tons of vegetable and fruit wastes are disposed of. This research aimed to convert the food wastes encompassing the vegetable and fruit wastes into solid and liquid organic fertilizer and to evaluate their influence on the growth (germination, phytochemicals, and biomolecules) of Solanum lycopersicum and Capsicum annum. Solanum lycopersicum, known as tomato, and Capsicum annum, known as bell pepper or chili pepper, are globally significant crops valued for their medicinal properties and economic importance. The pot experiment was performed with organic fertilizers (solid and liquid organic fertilizer) and compared with the influence of chemical fertilizer and control soil without fertilizers. Interestingly, the liquid organic fertilizer effectively enhanced the biometric profile and chlorophyll content of S. lycopersicum and C. annum Viz., 1.23 mg g-1 and 0.89 mg g-1, respectively. The results of a 30-days pot experiment with various fertilizer treatments showed significant influence of liquid organic fertilizer on the fresh and dry weight biomass of both S. lycopersicum and C. annum. Subsequently, the solid organic fertilizer showed considerable influence on test crops, and the influence of these organic fertilizers was more significant than the chemical fertilizer on crop growth in 30-days experiment. These results suggest that the sustainable approach can effectively convert vegetables and fruit waste into valuable organic fertilizer enriched with plant growth supporting essential nutritional elements.

Phytoremediation by trees as a nature-based solution for mitigating metal contamination in urban soils

Trace metals in the environment are important pollutants affecting human health, particularly in urban areas worldwide. Phytoremediation as a nature-based solution (NBS) and environmentally friendly technology may decrease high concentrations of trace metals in urban soils, protecting public health (especially children) and contributing to urban sustainability. This study examined trace metal contamination of urban soils and trees in six cities in the Republic of Srpska (RS), Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and investigated the potential of selected tree species for phytoremediation as a NBS for metal-polluted urban soils. Contamination of urban soils was assessed by quantifying the concentrations of 11 trace metals (B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn). To estimate phytoremediation potential of urban tree species, concentration and bioconcentration factor of the 11 metals were quantified in leaves of three common and abundant tree species: Aesculus hippocastanum L. (horse chestnut), Platanus acerifolia Willd. (plane), and Tilia sp. (lime). The results showed that trace metal concentrations in leaf samples did not exceed toxicity threshold guideline values. Further assessments are needed to establish the true potential of the three species as NBS for urban soils.

Potential contamination and health risk assessment of heavy metals in Hurghada coastal sediments, Northwestern Red Sea

Throughout the year, people flock to the Red Sea's shoreline for tourism and fishing. The current study aims to document heavy metal contamination and human health assessment in 30 surface sediment samples collected along the Hurghada shoreline in Egypt. To estimate sediment contamination, the pollution index (PI), pollution load index (PLI), degree of contamination (Cdeg), and Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI) were calculated, while the chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard index (HI), cancer risk (CR), and total lifetime cancer risk (LCR) were determined on both adults and children via ingestion, dermal, and inhalation pathways. The HM averages (μg/g dry weight) were in the following order: Fe (345.70) > Mn (49.36) > Pb (41.98) > Zn (7.47) > Ni (1.73) > Cu (1.23) > Co (1.09) > Cd (0.14). Pollution indices found that Hurghada coastal sediments were moderately polluted with Pb but not with the other HMs. The average CDI values were in the descending order of ingestion > dermal > inhalation pathways, and the average CDI values on children were higher than those on adults. The hazard index (HI) for adults and children was Pb > Ni > Cd > Fe > Mn > Co > Cu > Zn, and all values were <1.0, showing that these HMs had no substantial non-carcinogenic impacts on the human body. LCR results show that children have greater values than adults. LCR values in adults were lower than 1 × 10-6, indicating no substantial health concerns, while in children they ranged from 1 × 10-6 to 1 × 10-4, indicating no significant risk to human health.

Modeling and identification of affective parameters on cadmium's durability and evaluating cadmium pollution indicators caused by using chemical fertilizers in long term

Soil contamination by anthropogenic heavy metals has become a global issue. This study aimed to investigate cadmium (Cd) concentration, mobility, and contamination indices of Cd in soils in the Hamadan province, west of Iran. To investigate the concentration of Cd in soil, one hundred soil samples from wheat farms and five samples from control lands were collected. Pollution indexes, including Cd mobility, enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, contamination index, and availability ratio, were investigated. The structural equation model was also used to evaluate effective parameters on cadmium durability in soil. Results showed that mean values of available phosphorus (P) were 83.65, 129, and 65 (mg kg-1) in three land-use types rainfed, irrigated, and controlled, respectively. The mean values of Cd in different land-use types of rainfed, irrigated, and controlled were 0.15, 0.18, and 0.08 (mg kg-1), respectively. The results indicated that the amount of Cd in both forms (available and total) in ones that received fertilizer, especially P fertilizers, was higher than in the controlled one. Other pollution indexes revealed that the study area had been slightly contaminated due to anthropogenic activities. Lime, clay, lead, and OM were identified as affective parameters on cadmium durability. Finally, the results demonstrated that the mobility rate was high. Cd had a higher potential mobility in soil samples in the rain-fed and irrigated land than in the controlled land, and Cd had a low retention time.

Geological context and human exposures to element mixtures in mining and agricultural settings in Colombia

Anthropogenic and natural sources contribute to chemical mixtures in air, water, and soil, posing potential risks to the environment and human health. To understand the interplay between element profiles in the human body, geographical location, and associated economic activities, we carried out an observational analytic cross-sectional study. The study recruited 199 participants from three municipalities, two of which had gold-mining as their primary economic activity, while the other was dedicated to agricultural and other local activities not related to mining. The concentrations of a total of 30 elements in human hair samples and 21 elements in environmental soil samples were measured using various spectrometry techniques. Unsupervised clustering analysis using Self-Organizing Maps was applied to human hair samples to analyze element concentrations. Distinct clusters of individuals were identified based on their hair element profiles, which were mapped to geographical location and economic activities. While higher levels of heavy metals (Ag, As, Hg, and Pb) were observed in individuals engaged in mining activities in certain clusters, individuals in agricultural areas show higher concentrations of elements found in pesticides (Ba and Sr). However, the elemental composition of hair is influenced not only by the anthropogenic activities but also by the inherent geological context where people live. Our findings highlight the significance of accounting for environmental factors when evaluating human health risks, as the intricate mixture of elements can yield valuable insights for targeted health interventions.

Geochemical composition and potential health risks of geophagic materials: an example from a rural area in the Limpopo Province of South Africa

Geophagy is a common practice among rural population of the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality area in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Although, the practice might be beneficial to the health of the consumers, its negative effects could overshadow the positive effects and might lead to detrimental health issues. The present work sought to investigate the geochemical composition as well as pH and organic matter (OM) content of geophagic materials commonly consumed in the study area. Furthermore, assessment of the potential health risk of the materials on geophagic individuals was also considered. Twelve samples were collected in the study area and analysed by X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for major and trace elements composition. The results showed higher concentrations of non-essential elements (e.g., As, Cr, Pb) than the proposed recommended daily standards intake, suggesting a potential health risk. The alkaline nature (pH 6.80 to 9.22) of the studied samples might affect the bioacessibility of some essential elements. Furthermore, the OM content (> 0.7%) observed in some of the studied samples may retain pathogenic micro-organisms detrimental to health. Although As and Cr presented a low bioaccessible fraction (< 16.0%), health risk assessment revealed that their concentrations represented a hazard (HQ > 1) and might induce non-carcinogenic health threats to geophagic individuals. Based on the geochemical analysis, pH and OM content as well as health risk assessment findings, the studied geophagic materials are not considered suitable for human consumption. The practice should therefore be discouraged amongst the population in the study area to avoid possible detrimental health issues.

Genomic epidemiology and transmission characteristics of mcr1-positive colistin-resistant Escherichia coli strains circulating at natural environment

MCR-positive Escherichia coli (MCRPEC) have been reported in humans worldwide. The high prevalence of mcr-1 poses clinical and environmental risks due to its diverse genetic mechanisms. Given the vital role of animals and the environment in the spread of antibiotic resistance, a "One Health" perspective should be taken when addressing antimicrobial resistance issues. This study conducted a prospective study in six farms (located in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang province, China) in 2019. MCRPEC strains were screened from samples of different sources. The molecular epidemiological surveys and transmission potential were investigated by whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. MCRPEC were detected in different farms with various sources. Sequence type complex 10 was dominant and distributed widely in multiple sources. Core-genome multilocus sequence type (cgMLST) analysis indicated that clonal transmission could occur within and between farms. In addition, mcr-1 genes with different locations showed different transmission tendencies. The study indicated that interspecies and cross-regional transmission of MCRPEC could occur between different sectors in farms. Further surveillance and research of non-clinical MCRPEC strains are necessary to reduce the threat of MCRPEC.

Removal of fenamiphos, imidacloprid, and oxamyl pesticides from water by microalgal Nannochloropsis oculata biomass and their determination by validated HPLC method

The present study assessed the removal of fenamiphos, imidacloprid, and oxamyl pesticides from water using algal Nannochloropsis oculata biomass. Several factors, such as algal biomass concentration, incubation time, and pesticide concentration, were studied for their impact on pesticide removal. Analysis and quantification of pesticides by rapid HPLC have been developed and validated. The optimum conditions were obtained at 15 min, 50 mg/L of pesticide concentration, and 4,500 mg/L of the algal biomass with 92.24% and 90.43% removal for fenamiphos and imidacloprid, respectively. While optimum parameters of 10 min incubation, 250 mg/L of pesticide concentration, and 2,750 mg/L of the algal biomass exhibited 67.34% removal for oxamyl. N. oculata, marine microalgae, successively removed different concentrations of the tested pesticides from water, and the algal biomass showed a potential reduction of pesticides in polluted water samples.

Global Situation of Bioremediation of Leachate-Contaminated Soils by Treatment with Microorganisms: A Systematic Review

This systematic review presents the current state of research in the last five years on contaminants in soils, especially in leachates from solid waste landfills, with emphasis on biological remediation. In this work, the pollutants that can be treated by microorganisms and the results obtained worldwide were studied. All the data obtained were compiled, integrated, and analyzed by soil type, pollutant type, bacterial type, and the countries where these studies were carried out. This review provides reliable data on the contamination of soils worldwide, especially soils contaminated by leachate from municipal landfills. The extent of contamination, treatment objectives, site characteristics, cost, type of microorganisms to be used, and time must be considered when selecting a viable remediation strategy. The results of this study can help develop innovative and applicable methods for evaluating the overall contamination of soil with different contaminants and soil types. These findings can help develop innovative, applicable, and economically feasible methods for the sustainable management of contaminated soils, whether from landfill leachate or other soil types, to reduce or eliminate risk to the environment and human health, and to achieve greater greenery and functionality on the planet.

Soil, leaf and fruit nutrient data for pear orchards located in the Circum-Bohai Bay and Loess Plateau regions

The data described in this paper were collected from the Circum-Bohai Bay and Loess Plateau regions of northern China. Soil, leaf and fruit nutrients from 225 typical pear orchards in these regions were measured. Soil data included pH, organic matter, total N, alkaline hydrolysable N, available P and available K concentrations of 3 different soil layers, 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm, from different orchards. Leaf and fruit data included N, P, K, Ca, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B concentrations of pear trees from different orchards. These data can be used to assess the soil nutrient supply and leaf and fruit nutrient status of pear orchards in two major producing areas, Circum-Bohai Bay and Loess Plateau. Additionally, this dataset provides data to support the development of regionalized and standardized soil nutrient management programs for pear orchards, as well as regionalized layouts of the main varieties in the two producing areas.

Influence of soil inorganic amendments on heavy metal accumulation by leafy vegetables

The present study aims to assess the effect of four inorganic soil amendments, such as lime (CaCO3), red mud consisting of 75% hematite (Fe2O3), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), and Al oxide (Al2O3), of an alkaline heavy metal-contaminated soil. For this purpose, a pot experiment was conducted by physically mixing individual six subsamples of a soil sample collected from Thessaly area with four inorganic soil amendments along with two leafy plants, spinach and lettuce. Al oxide causes the maximum reduction of the water-soluble Cu concentration, as its concentrations is no longer detectable. The Cu availability index decreases when aluminum oxide was used. The use of gypsum and red mud caused almost equal reduction while the smallest decrease was caused by the use of lime. The Zn availability index decreased equally when aluminum oxide and gypsum were mixed with the soil sample. The highest reduction of Cu and Zn transfer coefficient (TC) was observed when the Al2O3 was used. In spinach, Zn TC reduction was 39.8% and Cu TC reduction was 41.0%. In lettuce, the addition of Al2O3 led to Cu TC reduction of over 37.3% and Zn TC reduction of up to 38.7%. Generally, Al2O3 nanoparticles may function as suitable sorbents for the removal of Zn and Cu from soil samples, with an increasing effectiveness in spinach rather than lettuce. Liming materials seem to increase the soil alkalinity and promote the complexation of soluble heavy metals with hydroxide ions leading to immobilization of heavy metals in soil and reduce their amount in leafy vegetables. Remediation of contaminated soils is considered necessary to reduce environmental risks and to achieve the means available to increase agricultural production of safe and quality food.

Soil microbiomes and one health

The concept of one health highlights that human health is not isolated but connected to the health of animals, plants and environments. In this Review, we demonstrate that soils are a cornerstone of one health and serve as a source and reservoir of pathogens, beneficial microorganisms and the overall microbial diversity in a wide range of organisms and ecosystems. We list more than 40 soil microbiome functions that either directly or indirectly contribute to soil, plant, animal and human health. We identify microorganisms that are shared between different one health compartments and show that soil, plant and human microbiomes are perhaps more interconnected than previously thought. Our Review further evaluates soil microbial contributions to one health in the light of dysbiosis and global change and demonstrates that microbial diversity is generally positively associated with one health. Finally, we present future challenges in one health research and formulate recommendations for practice and evaluation.

Opportunistic Mycobiota of Dust in Cities of Different Climate Zones: Murmansk and Moscow

For the first time, mycological analysis of dust, including assessment of opportunistic fungal species, was carried out for the urban ecosystems of air, vegetation, and paved surfaces in different climate areas (the cities of Murmansk and Moscow). The combined effect of environmental factors (climate, functional zone, and substrate type) on qualitative and quantitative parameters of micromycete communities was assessed using MANOVA and cluster analysis. It was found that the abundance of culturable mycobiota in the air, on tree leaves, and on paved surfaces was lower in Murmansk than in Moscow. In both cities, approximately a half of fungal species were opportunistic pathogens. The relative abundance of opportunistic fungi of the BSL-2 group was higher in the air of the traffic zone in both cities and of the residential zone in Moscow. In the residential and traffic zones of Moscow, the most abundant species in the air in on the road dust were Aspergillus fumigatus and A. niger, while in Murmansk communities were dominated by members of the genera Cephalosporium, Scopulariopsis, and Trichoderma, which are less pathogenic for humans. The most significant factors affecting the abundance and species diversity of micromycetes, including opportunistic fungi, were the substrate type (air, leaves, or paved surfaces) and the climate, while the effect of the functional zone was not significant. The recreation zones of cities located in different climate regions are the most favorable for humans due to lower abundance of opportunistic fungi in the air and to lack of micromycetes of the BSL-2 and BSL-3 groups. However, the abundance of potentially pathogenic species on the surfaces of leaves and roads in this zone was higher than in the air. Therefore, it can be recommended that city residents minimize their contact with the leaves surface and road pavements, which is especially relevant for toddlers, so as to diminish the probability of encountering opportunistic mycobiota that potentially represents a health hazard.

Geographical distribution of trace elements (selenium, zinc, iron, copper) and case fatality rate of COVID-19: a national analysis across conterminous USA

Severe outcome particularly death is the largest burden of COVID-19. Clinical observations showed preliminary data that deficiency in certain trace elements, essential for the normal activity of immune system, may be associated with worse COVID-19 outcome. Relevant study of environmental epidemiology has yet to be explored. We investigated the geographical association between concentrations of Se, Zn, Fe and Cu in surface soils and case fatality rate of COVID-19 in USA. Two sets of database, including epidemiological data of COVID-19 (including case fatality rate, from the University of John Hopkinson) and geochemical concentration data of Se, Zn, Fe and Cu in surface soils (from the National Geochemical Survey), were mapped according to geographical location at the county level across conterminous USA. Characteristics of population, socio-demographics and residential environment by county were also collected. Seven cross-sectional sampling dates, with a 4-week interval between adjacent dates, constructed an observational investigation over 24 weeks from October 8, 2020, to March 25, 2021. Multivariable fractional (logit) outcome regression analyses were used to assess the association with adjustment for potential confounding factors. In USA counties with the lowest concentration of Zn, the case fatality rate of COVID-19 was the highest, after adjustment for other influencing factors. Associations of Se, Fe and Cu with case fatality rate of COVID-19 were either inconsistent over time or disappeared after adjustment for Zn. Our large study provides epidemiological evidence suggesting an association of Zn with COVID-19 severity, suggesting Zn deficiency should be avoided.

Activity concentrations and radiological hazard assessments of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in soil samples of oil-producing areas of South Africa

The specific activity of natural radionuclide in soil samples of the oil-producing areas of South Africa was measured using a High Purity Germanium detector. The activity of226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in the soil range from 16.5 ± 1.3 to 64.9 ± 3.1, 16.8 ± 1.5 to 88.6 ± 1.2, 135.2 ± 17.5 to 604.8 ± 13.4 Bqkg-1 for Mossel Bay; 14.3 ± 1.2 to 48.9 ± 8.2, 22.3 ± 1.4 to 45.1 ± 3.2, 237.7 ± 10.9 to 486.5 ± 40.1 Bqkg-1 for Cape Town; 10.5 ± 1.1 to 25.8 ± 3.2, 13.1 ± 1.9 to 44.3 ± 5.2, 140.2 ± 10.9 to 229.8 ± 12.8 Bqkg-1 for Nelson Mandela Bay and 5.6 ± 2.2 to 13.1 ± 2.9, 4.5 ± 2.5 to 14.1 ± 2.7, 62.7 ± 22.6 to 126.5 ± 21.2 Bqkg-1 for Msunduzi. Most soil samples' radiological hazards were within the world average.

Potential Health Risks of Lead Exposure from Early Life through Later Life: Implications for Public Health Education

Lead (Pb) exposure has been a serious environmental and public health problem throughout the world over the years. The major sources of lead in the past were paint and gasoline before they were phased out due to its toxicity. Meanwhile, people continue to be exposed to lead from time to time through many other sources such as water, food, soil and air. Lead exposure from these sources could have detrimental effects on human health, especially in children. UNICEF reported that approximately 800 million children have blood lead levels (BLLs) at or above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) globally. This paper reports on the potential risks of lead exposure from early life through later life. The articles used in this study were searched from databases such as Springer, Science Direct, Hindawi, MDPI, Google Scholar, PubMed and other academic databases. The levels of lead exposure in low income and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs) were reported, with the former being more affected. The intake of certain nutrients could play an essential role in reducing (e.g., calcium and iron) or increasing (e.g., high fat foods) lead absorption in children. Elevated blood lead levels may disturb the cells' biological metabolism by replacing beneficial ions in the body such as calcium, magnesium, iron and sodium. Once these ions are replaced by lead, they can lead to brain disorders, resulting in reduced IQ, learning difficulties, reduced attention span and some behavioral problems. Exposure to lead at an early age may lead to the development of more critical problems later in life. This is because exposure to this metal can be harmful even at low exposure levels and may have a lasting and irreversible effect on humans. Precautionary measures should be put in place to prevent future exposure. These will go a long way in safeguarding the health of everyone, most especially the young ones.

Composting effect and antibiotic removal under a new temperature control strategy

The main objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a new temperature control strategy in the co-composting process to accelerate operation cycle and remove antibiotics from mixed organic wastes. The evaluation of the composting process showed that composting with temperature control (TC) was completed within 14 days. The final compost of TC exhibited a 10% higher degradation of organic matters, more humus formation and 11.25% lower heavy metals concentration than conventional composting (CC), which fully met the Chinese National Agricultural Organic Fertilizer Standard requirements. The degradation extent and kinetic of macrolides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and fluoroquinolones showed that the removal efficiency of total antibiotics in TC was 23.58% higher than CC, with less half-life, which was significantly correlated with higher temperature. Particularly, the highest removal was observed for sulfonamides (87.45%) in TC, the half-life of which was reduced by 75.95% compared with CC. The higher degradation rate was attributed to enhanced decomposition of unstable antibiotics and degrading activity of microbes at high temperature. The microbiological analysis showed that the external heating led to a distinct composition and succession of bacterial community in TC. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota were dominant and the emergence of Patescibacteria and Chloroflexi at cooling period in TC proved that the later composting environment was in an oligotrophic state. Current research provided a promising rapid composting approach for high-quality fertilizer production and antibiotic management in organic waste disposal.

Arsenic contribution of poultry manure towards soils and food plants contamination and associated cancer risk in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Exposure to high level of arsenic (As) through the ingestion of contaminated soil, dust and food plants can pose health risk to humans. This study investigates the total arsenic (As), arsenobetaine (AsB), monomethylarsenate (MMA), dimethylarsenate (DMA), arsenite (As³⁺) and arsenate (As⁵⁺) concentrations in poultry feed, manure, agricultural soils and food plants collected from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. The total mean As concentrations in the edible parts of food plants ranged from 0.096 mg kg^-1 to 1.25 mg kg^-1 with percentile (P) values (P25-0.039, P50-0.0765, P75-0.165 1 mg kg^-1 to P25-0.95, P50-1.23, P75-1.6 1 mg kg^-1) and exceeded the food safety limit (0.1 mg kg^-1) of Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) in all plant species except Pisum sativum (pea) and Mentha arvensis (mint). The risk to human health was assessed through the average daily intake (ADI), hazards quotient (HQ), health risk index (HRI) and lifetime cancer risk (LTCR). The highest average daily intake of As via the ingestion of Malva neglecta (mallow, a leafy plant) was observed for adults and children. The ADI for adults and children (2.36 × 10^-4 mg kg^-1 day^-1 and 6.33 × 10^-4 mg kg^-1 day^-1) was about 13% and 5%, respectively, of the Bench Mark Dose Limit (BMDL_0.5) of 3.00 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1 day^-1 set by WHO. The HRI was 3 times more in the children (2.1) than the adults (0.79), posing non-cancer health risks (health risk index > 1) for children. The LTCR values were slightly higher (1.53 × 10^-4) relative to USEPA and WHO limits (1 × 10^-6 to 1 × 10^-4) for children whereas a minimal cancer risk was observed for adults via consumption of selected food plants. The results showed that poultry manure can contaminate food plants that may lead to cancer and non-cancer risks in agricultural areas, Pakistan. Thus, it is important to minimize As concentration in poultry feed to safeguard human health and environment from adverse effects.

Role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in boosting the phytoremediation of stressed soils: Opportunities, challenges, and prospects

Soil is considered as a vital natural resource equivalent to air and water which supports growth of the plants and provides habitats to microorganisms. Changes in soil properties, productivity, and, inevitably contamination/stress are the result of urbanisation, industrialization, and long-term use of synthetic fertiliser. Therefore, in the recent scenario, reclamation of contaminated/stressed soils has become a potential challenge. Several customized, such as, physical, chemical, and biological technologies have been deployed so far to restore contaminated land. Among them, microbial-assisted phytoremediation is considered as an economical and greener approach. In recent decades, soil microbes have successfully been used to improve plants' ability to tolerate biotic and abiotic stress and strengthen their phytoremediation capacity. Therefore, in this context, the current review work critically explored the microbial assisted phytoremediation mechanisms to restore different types of stressed soil. The role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and their potential mechanisms that foster plants' growth and also enhance phytoremediation capacity are focussed. Finally, this review has emphasized on the application of advanced tools and techniques to effectively characterize potent soil microbial communities and their significance in boosting the phytoremediation process of stressed soils along with prospects for future research.

Novel Fuller Earth, Rock Phosphate, and Biochar for Phytomanagement of Toxic Metals in Polluted Soils

The present study was aimed to assess the efficacy of individual and combined effects of novel fuller earth, rock phosphate, and biochar (grapefruit peel) at 1% dosage on maize plant growth, soil chemical properties anduptake of toxic metals (TMs), such as Cu, Zn, Fe, and Cd, by maize plant sown in Korangi (district of Karachi, Pakistan) heavily polluted and Korangi less polluted (K-HP and K-LP) soils. The obtained results indicate that the dry biomass of maize crop increased by 14.13% with combined (FE1% + GBC1%) on K-HP soil and 18.24% with combined (FE 1% + GBC 1%) effects on K-LP soil. The maximum immobilization of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Cd was observed by 36% with GBC1%, 11.90% with FE1%, 98.97% with combined RP1% + GBC1%, 51.9% with FE1% + GBC1% for K-HP, 11.90% with FE1%, 28.6% with FE1%, 22.22% with RP1% + GBC1%, and 57.05% with FE 1% + GBC 1% for K-LP soil. After the addition of proposed substances, modification of soil OM, SOC, TOC, and pH level appeared this lead to the changes in the phyto-availability of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Cd in maize plant. It was concluded that the application of individual and combined effects of novel fuller earth, rock phosphate, and biochar (grapefruit peel) have potential to stabilize pollutants from multi-metal polluted soils for safe crop production.

An assessment of various potentially toxic elements and associated health risks in agricultural soil along the middle Gangetic basin, India

The present study analysed the levels of potentially toxic elements along with physico-chemical properties of agricultural soil samples (n = 59) collected from fields situated along the path of river Ganga in the middle Gangetic floodplain in two districts, Ballia and Ghazipur. Arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) levels were analysed by Wavelength Dispersive-X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (WD-XRF) and the associated health risks along with diverse indices were calculated. The mean concentrations of As, Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn and Ni were found to be 15, 42, 85, 18, 87 and 47 mg kg^-1, respectively in Ballia and 13, 31, 73, 22, 77 and 34 mg kg^-1, respectively in Ghazipur. Physico-chemical properties like pH, ORP and organic matter were found to be 7.91, 209 and 1.20, respectively in Ballia and 8.51, 155 and 1.25, respectively in Ghazipur. The calculated health quotient (HQ) for all the elements was observed to be within the threshold value of one, however with few exemptions. Therefore, the present study showcases the contamination of potentially toxic elements in agricultural fields and possible health hazards for people.

Genotoxic Assessment of Nutraceuticals Obtained from Agricultural Biowaste: Where Do We "AMES"?

Several pharmaceutical companies are nowadays considering the use of agri-food waste as alternative raw material for the extraction of bioactive compounds to include in nutraceuticals and food supplements. This recycling activity is encountering the support of authorities, which are alarmed by air, soil and water pollution generated by agricultural waste disposal. Waste reuse has several economic advantages: (i) its low cost; (ii) its abundance; (iii) the high content of bioactive molecule (antioxidants, minerals, fibers, fatty acids); as well as (iv) the financial support received by governments eager to promote eco-compatible and pollution-reducing practices. While nutraceuticals produced from biowaste are becoming popular, products that have been risk-assessed in terms of safety are quite rare. This despite waste biomass, in virtue of its chemical complexity, could, in many cases, mine the overall safety of the final nutraceutical product. In this review, we summarize the scientific results published on genotoxicity risk-assessment of bioactive compounds extracted from agricultural waste. The review depicts a scenario where the risk-assessment of biowaste derived products is still scarcely diffuse, but when available, it confirms the safety of these products, and lets us envisage their future inclusion in the list of botanicals allowed for formulation intended for human consumption.

The Role of Grass Compost and Zea Mays in Alleviating Toxic Effects of Tetracycline on the Soil Bacteria Community

Given their common use for disease treatment in humans, and particularly in animals, antibiotics pose an exceptionally serious threat to the soil environment. This study aimed to determine the response of soil bacteria and oxidoreductases to a tetracycline (Tc) contamination, and to establish the usability of grass compost (G) and Zea mays (Zm) in mitigating adverse Tc effects on selected microbial properties of the soil. The scope of microbiological analyses included determinations of bacteria with the conventional culture method and new-generation sequencing method (NGS). Activities of soil dehydrogenases and catalase were determined as well. Tc was found to reduce counts of organotrophic bacteria and actinobacteria in the soils as well as the activity of soil oxidoreductases. Soil fertilization with grass compost (G) and Zea mays (Zm) cultivation was found to alleviate the adverse effects of tetracycline on the mentioned group of bacteria and activity of oxidoreductases. The metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the bacteria belonging to Acidiobacteria and Proteobacteria phyla were found to prevail in the soil samples. The study results recommend soil fertilization with G and Zm cultivation as successful measures in the bioremediation of tetracycline-contaminated soils and indicate the usability of the so-called core bacteria in the bioaugmentation of such soils.

Extended-spectrum-beta-lactamases and carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from fresh produce farms in different governorates of Egypt

Background and Aim: Fresh produce farms represents a major source of concern since they are becoming increasingly antibiotic resistant. This study aimed to investigate t he occurrence of carbapenemase and extended-spectrum-beta-lactamases (ESBL) - producing genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from fresh produce farms in Egypt, irrigation water, and people working in these fields. Materials and Methods: One hundred tomatoes from typical farms were collected in plastic bags. The study also included 20 surface-water samples from different irrigation watersheds in fresh produce farms, as well as 50 feces samples from farmworkers. Suspected K. pneumoniae was grown on Eosin Methylene Blue agar for 24 h before being biochemically identified using the RapID ONE test. PCR was used to detect carbapenemase (blaKPC, blaOXA-48, and blaNDM) and ESBL (blaSHV, blaTEM, and blaCTX) expressing genes on isolates. Results: K. pneumoniae was identified in 30% of water and 10% of worker samples, while only one isolate was found in tomato samples. One of the six irrigation water isolates tested positive for carbapenem-resistant NDM. In contrast, two isolates tested positive for ESBL determinants, one of which was blaSHV and the other having both blaSHV and blaTEM genes. Two of the five K. pneumoniae isolates from farmworkers were positive for blaNDM, with one isolate also testing positive for blaSHV and blaTEM. The blaOXA-48 gene was also discovered in the carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae tomato isolate used in this study. Conclusion: Carbapenemase- and ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae were found in fresh produce farms, implying that these resistance genes were being passed down to Egyptian consumers.

Soil parameters affecting the levels of potentially harmful metals in Thessaly area, Greece: a robust quadratic regression approach of soil pollution prediction

The behavior and possible contamination risk due to the presence of potentially harmful metals (PHM) were studied based on 2250 soil samples that were collected in a 5-year period (2013-2017) from the plain of Thessaly (prefectures of Karditsa, Trikala, and Larissa). The vertical distribution of metals was also investigated from sample profiles at three depths 0-30, 30-60, and 60-90cm. The soils of the sampling belong to four taxonomy soil orders that are dominant in the studied area (Alfisols, Inceptisols, Endisols, and Vertisols). In a novel approach, robust quadratic regression analysis on multiple variables was used to define prediction models of the concentrations of two metals: Fe which is an essential metal and the toxic Cd. Linear and quadratic regression formulae were estimated based on the iteratively reweighted least squares robust regression approach in an effort to eliminate the impact of the outliers. These formulae define how several soil properties affect the distribution of the considered metals in each soil order. The evaluation of the estimated regression equations based on the R² metric indicates that they constitute a useful, reliable, and valuable tool for managing, describing, and predicting the pollution in the studied area.

Insights into the nurse effect of a native plant Ficus tikoua on Pb‒Zn tailing wastelands in western Hunan, China

Lead‒zinc (Pb‒Zn) processing and extraction activity generates large volumes of highly toxic and bare tailing (BT) wastelands which poses a potentially extreme risk to the surrounding environment. Revegetation in the Pb‒Zn tailing wastelands is usually considered a beneficial approach. Ficus tikoua is a native vine which can successfully colonize on Maoping Pb‒Zn mine tailing wastelands in western Hunan, China. This study involved examination of the nurse effect of F. tikoua on Pb‒Zn tailing wastelands, to provide insights into the potential mechanism of F. tikoua influencing soil quality and vegetation succession. The vegetation characteristics, nutrient properties, and heavy metal contents of three different types of vegetation patches associated with F. tikoua in Pb‒Zn tailing wastelands, representing different stage of succession, were investigated. The height, coverage, and aboveground and underground biomass of these vegetation patches showed an increasing trend from vegetation patch I (VP-I) to patch III (VP-III). The nutrient pool and chemical properties of these tailing wastelands gradually re-established from BT wasteland to VP-III. From VP-I to VP-III, the total heavy metal contents (i.e., Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd) and DTPA-extractable Pb, Cu, and Cd contents significantly decreased, while the DTPA-extractable Zn content remained unchanged. Our findings suggested that F. tikoua exerts a distinct nurse plant effect by increasing the essential nutrient content of soil, reducing the available heavy metal content, and subsequently increasing the number of plant species and the biomass. Therefore, F. tikoua may be used as a promising nurse plant for triggering revegetation and phytostabilization of Pb‒Zn tailing wastelands at the initial stage of remediation.

Characteristics changes on Applications of Antibiotics and Current Approaches to Enhance Productivity with Soil Microbiome

The contamination of environmental sully with antibiotics is regarded as a major problem today and predictable to attain more recognition in near future. However, human intervention resulting in antibiotic consumption is being enhancing all around the world. Our review of literature revealed the role of microbiome in sully and how antibiotic resistant genes raised. The structure of antibiotics basically influenced by natural components such as biotic and abiotic push which shifts based on different soils. Therefore, management of microbiome in soil and their expression studies were distinctively revealed. The assessment of antibiotic resistance genes with help of next generation sequencing provided a clear comprehension on genome and transcriptome of the bacterial genes. Thus, interaction of microbiome with soil can also be well understood. The current findings in our study will guide every researcher to follow logical protocol in analyzing microbiota composition is covered as well and also to understand its metagenomic and sequenced with next-generation sequencer which helps to comprehend the diverse micro-flora present in soil and its operation. Finally, later progresses in bioinformatics computer program, flow of work, and applications for analyzing metagenomic information are put in a nutshell.

Graphene Based Nanohybrid Aptasensors in Environmental Monitoring: Concepts, Design and Future Outlook

In view of ever-increasing environmental pollution, there is an immediate requirement to promote cheap, multiplexed, sensitive and fast biosensing systems to monitor these pollutants or contaminants. Aptamers have shown numerous advantages in being used as molecular recognition elements in various biosensing devices. Graphene and graphene-based materials/nanohybrids combined with several detection methods exhibit great potential owing to their exceptional optical, electronic and physicochemical properties which can be employed extensively to monitor environmental contaminants. For environmental monitoring applications, aptamers have been successfully combined with graphene-based nanohybrids to produce a wide range of innovative methodologies. Aptamers are immobilized at the surface of graphene based nanohybrids via covalent and non-covalent strategies. This review highlights the design, working principle, recent developmental advances and applications of graphene based nanohybrid aptasensors (GNH-Apts) (since January 2014 to September 2021) with a special emphasis on two major signal-transduction methods, i.e., optical and electrochemical for the monitoring of pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, antibiotics, and organic compounds from different environmental samples (e.g., water, soil and related). Lastly, the challenges confronted by scientists and the possible future outlook have also been addressed. It is expected that high-performance graphene-based nanohybrid aptasensors would find broad applications in the field of environmental monitoring.

Assessing Vegetation Decline Due to Pollution from Solid Waste Management by a Multitemporal Remote Sensing Approach

Nowadays, the huge production of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is one of the most strongly felt environmental issues. Consequently, the European Union (EU) delivers laws and regulations for better waste management, identifying the essential requirements for waste disposal operations and the characteristics that make waste hazardous to human health and the environment. In Italy, environmental regulations define, among other things, the characteristics of sites to be classified as “potentially contaminated”. From this perspective, the Basilicata region is currently one of the Italian regions with the highest number of potentially polluted sites in proportion to the number of inhabitants. This research aimed to identify the possible effects of potentially toxic element (PTE) pollution due to waste disposal activities in three “potentially contaminated” sites in southern Italy. The area was affected by a release of inorganic pollutants with values over the thresholds ruled by national/European legislation. Potential physiological efficiency variations of vegetation were analyzed through the multitemporal processing of satellite images. Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images were used to calculate the trend in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) over the years. The multitemporal trends were analyzed using the median of the non-parametric Theil–Sen estimator. Finally, the Mann–Kendall test was applied to evaluate trend significance featuring areas according to the contamination effects on investigated vegetation. The applied procedure led to the exclusion of significant effects on vegetation due to PTEs. Thus, waste disposal activities during previous years do not seem to have significantly affected vegetation around targeted sites.

Transfer of Metal(loid)s from Soil to Leaves and Trunk Xylem Sap of Medicinal Plants and Possible Health Risk Assessment

The objective of the present study was to investigate metal(loid)s in soils, in the trunk xylem sap and in the leaves of the Dipteryx alata plant located near the highway with high vehicle traffic in agricultural regions and near landfills, and to assess the transfer of metal(loid)s from soil to plant and possible health risk assessment. Trunk xylem sap, leaves and soil samples were collected at three sites near the highway. The analysis of trace elements was carried out using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES). In the three soil sampling sites far from the highway edge, 15 elements were quantified. The concentrations of elements in the soil presented in greater proportions in the distance of 5 m in relation to 20 and 35 m. The metal(loid)s content in the study soil was higher than in other countries. The concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, P, Se and Zn in the xylem sap were much higher than the leaves. The values of transfer factor of P, Mg and Mn from soil to the xylem sap and transfer factor of P from soil to leaf were greater than 1, indicating that the specie have a significant phytoremediation and phytoextraction potential. This plant has a tendency to accumulate As, Cd and Cr in its leaf tissues. The chronic hazard index (HI) values recorded in this study were above 1 for adults and adolescents. It is concluded that the soil, the trunk xylem sap and leaves of this plant are contaminated by heavy metals. Ingestion of the trunk xylem sap of this plant can cause toxicity in humans if ingested in large quantities and in the long term; therefore, its consumption should be avoided.

Human health risk assessment of lead, cadmium, and mercury co-exposure from agricultural soils in the Tuzla Canton (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

The aim of this study was to assess the risk of human exposure to lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) through agricultural soil by considering both uncertainty and variability in key exposure parameters. For this reason we collected soil samples from 29 locations in the Tuzla Canton (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and measured their metal levels with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission or absorption spectrometry (ICP-AES and ICP-AAS, respectively). The levels of Pb ranged from 13.33 to 1692.33 mg/kg, of Cd from 0.05 to 3.67 mg/kg, and of Hg from 0.02 to 2.73 mg/kg. To estimate cancer and non-cancer risks we used deterministic and semi-probabilistic methods. Lead was found to involve higher health risk than the other two heavy metals. Its hazard index (HI) decreased between population groups (children>women>men) and exposure routes (ingestion>skin contact>inhalation). Our Monte Carlo simulations indicated that Pb HIs for both adult populations had a 0.6 % probability to exceed the threshold value of 1, while in children this probability was 14.2 %. Cd and Hg showed no probability to exceed the threshold in any scenario. Our simulation results raise concern about possible adverse health effects of heavy metals from soil, especially in children. It is very important to continue monitoring environmental pollution and assess human health risk, not only with respect to soil, but also with other important environmental compartments, such as air and water.

Influence of Manure Application on the Soil Bacterial Microbiome in Integrated Crop-Livestock Farms in Maryland

As a traditional agricultural system, integrated crop-livestock farms (ICLFs) involve the production of animals and crops in a shared environment. The ICLFs in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States practice sustainable manure aging or composting processes to provide an on-farm source of soil amendment for use as natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for crop production. However, crop fertilization by soil incorporation of aged manure or compost may introduce different microbes and alter the soil microbial community. The aim of this study was to characterize the influence of aged or composted manure application on the diversity of soil bacterial community in ICLFs. Soil samples from six ICLFs in Maryland were collected before (pre-crop) and during the season (2020–2021) and used to analyze soil bacterial microbiome by 16S rDNA sequencing. Results showed that both phylum- and genus-level alterations of soil bacterial communities were associated with amendment of aged or composted manure. Particularly, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were enriched, while Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi were reduced after manure product application. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of Bacillus was decreased, while two zoonotic pathogens, Salmonella and Listeria, were enriched by manure amendments. Overall, animal manure amendment of soil increased the phylogenetic diversity, but reduced the richness and evenness of the soil bacterial communities. Although manure composting management in ICLFs benefits agricultural sustainable production, the amendments altered the soil bacterial communities and were associated with the finding of two major zoonotic bacterial pathogens, which raises the possibility of their potential transfer to fresh horticultural produce crops that may be produced on the manured soils and then subsequently consumed without cooking.

Spatial variability and delineation of management zones based on soil micronutrient status in apple orchard soils of Kashmir valley, India

Knowledge and up-scaling of status, availability, and distribution of soil micronutrients are hugely significant for enhancing crop productivity and profitability. However, regional database entailing spatial variability of key micronutrients for a major apple-producing region like the Kashmir Himalayan Region (KHR) is missing. We investigated 588 topsoil samples between 2016 and 2017 (to 30 cm depth) to estimate spatial variability of extractable Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe; develop spatial maps; and delineate potential management zones (MZs) in apple orchards using geo-statistical methods. Soil sampling was performed post-harvest season. Principal component analysis and fuzzy c-mean clustering were performed to develop MZs. Results exhibited wide variation, with high coefficient of variation (%) for Mn and Cu (123.9 and 114.4, respectively) and low (71.6) and medium (104) variability for Fe and Zn. Mean concentrations followed the order: Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn, with deficiencies evident towards central and northern regions of the study area. The best-fitted model was exponential. The nugget/sill ratio values were 0.41, 0.08, 0.37, and 0.38 for Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe, respectively, indicating strong spatial dependence for Cu and moderate dependence for Fe, Zn, and Mn. Correlations between elevation, slope, and soil pH with micronutrients were negative, whereas with soil organic carbon and electrical conductivity positive relationships were identified. Three principal components accounted for 67·18% data variance. Based on the fuzzy performance index and modified partition entropy, five MZs were delineated, which exhibited variations from each other. These MZs highlighted the need for specific supplemental provisions in increasing soil fertility and apple productivity.

Multiple sequence types, virulence determinants and antimicrobial resistance genes in multidrug- and colistin-resistant Escherichia coli from agricultural and non-agricultural soils

In soils, the presence of clinically relevant bacteria carrying ARGs, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase- and plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase-encoding genes, is an underestimated public health problem that requires more attention. For this investigation, 300 samples from agricultural and non-agricultural soils were used to obtain 41 MDR E. coli isolates, standing out the resistance to β-lactams, fluoroquinolones and colistin. Virulence genes related to diarrheagenic E. coli and extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli were detected. Several ARGs were found, highlighting the presence of at least one β-lactamase-encoding gene (bla_TEM, bla_CMY, bla_SHV, bla_OXA-1-like, bla_CTX-M-2, and/or bla_CTX-M-15) in each isolate. Among the fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli isolates, the plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes (qnrB and oqxA) and substitutions in the quinolone resistance-determining regions were detected. Some isolates were resistant to colistin (MICs of 4-8 mg/L) and, although no mcr-like gene was detected, substitutions in the two-component systems involving PhoP/PhoQ and PmrA/PmrB were found. Furthermore, the E. coli isolates presented plasmids and class 1 integrons, the last one detected in all isolates. The ARGs bla_TEM, aadA and dfrA and the lpfA virulence-associated gene presented statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) in agricultural soils, while the bla_OXA-1-like gene presented a statistically significant difference in non-agricultural soils. Thirty-eight sequence types (STs) were identified among the isolates, spotlighting the 20 different STs that carried bla_CMY and bla_CTX-M-type genes and those commonly reported in infections worldwide. The occurrence of virulent, multidrug- and colistin-resistant E. coli isolates in soils could lead to contamination of surrounding environments and food, increasing the risk of human and animal exposure. Therefore, this study contributes to a better understanding of E. coli in soils and reinforces the importance of the One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance surveillance.

Heavy Metal Contents and Assessment of Soil Contamination in Different Land-Use Types in the Qaidam Basin

Due to the unique geographical location and rapid development in the agricultural industry, heavy metals’ risk of soil contamination in the Qaidam Basin is gradually increasing. The following study was conducted to determine the soil heavy metal contents under different types of land use, contamination levels, and the physicochemical properties of soil. Soil samples were collected from facility lands, orchards, farmlands, and grasslands at 0–10 and 10–20 cm soil layers. Heavy metals including copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the soil was evaluated with different methods. Overall, the average Cu (25.07 mg/kg), Cr (45.67 mg/kg), Ni (25.56 mg/kg), Zn (71.24 mg/kg), Pb (14.19 mg/kg), Cd (0.17 mg/kg), As (12.54 mg/kg), and Hg (0.05 mg/kg) were lower than the environmental quality standard. However, the Cu, Cr, Ni, and As were highest in farmland, and Zn and Hg were highest in the facility land. The Pb content was highest in orchards, and the Cd content was the same in facility land, orchards, and farmland. Among the different land-use types, the soil heavy metal concentrations decreased in the order of facility land > farmland > grassland > orchards. The pH was alkaline, the content of SOC (soil organic carbon) 15.76 g/kg in grassland, TN (total nitrogen) 1.43 g/kg, and TP (total phosphorus) 0.97 g/kg in facility land showed the highest result. The soil BD (bulk density) had a significant positive correlation with Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, and the TP positively correlated with Cu, Zn, Cd, and Hg. The soil evaluation results of the comprehensive pollution index indicated that the soil was in a clean condition. The index of potential environmental risk indicates that heavy metals are slightly harmful to the soil.

Cytotoxicity analysis of pre- and post-hurricane harvey soil samples collected from greater houston bayous

Rapid urbanization, anthropogenic pollution and frequent flooding events are affecting the soil and water quality along the streams and bayous of Houston. Soil acts as sink and reservoir of heavy metals and nutrients affecting human and animal health. The objectives of the study are 1) to analyze the effects of the metal and nutrient concentration of bayou flood plain surface soil samples on the gut cell cytotoxicity and 2) to evaluate the spatial and temporal difference in soil contamination on cell viability of colon cancer (HT-29) and normal colon epithelial (CCD 841 CoN) cell lines. To evaluate soil contamination between pre- and post-hurricane (Summer and Fall) conditions in six Bayous (Brays, Buffalo, Halls, Hunting, Greens and White Oak Bayous) of Harris County, Texas, in vitro bioassay analysis was applied to soil extracts. The MTT assay determined that, with increase in concentration of Bayou soil from 12.5% to 100%, the viability of CCD 841 CoN and HT-29 cells decreased significantly, across all sampling locations during both summer and fall seasons. Among all the bayous, the viability of CCD 841 CoN cells in summer and fall followed the pattern of White Oak > Greens > Halls > Brays Bayou, where the viability of cells exposed to White Oak soils was 3-4 times higher than cells exposed to Brays Bayou soil at 100% soil concentration. The viability of HT-29 cells in both seasons followed the pattern of Greens > White Oak > Halls > Brays Bayou, where the viability of cells exposed to Greens Bayou soil was more than 3-4 times higher than the cells exposed to Brays Bayou soil at 100% concentration. The higher concentration of metals and nutrients such as P, Zn, Cd, and Cu might have contributed to the significant cell lethality in Brays Bayou samples compared to other locations.

Deficiency of phyto-available sulphur, zinc, boron, iron, copper and manganese in soils of India

Nutrient deficiencies in soil–crop contexts and inappropriate managements are the important reasons for low crop productivity, reduced nutritional quality of agricultural produce and animal/human malnutrition, across the world. The present investigation was carried out to evaluate nutrient deficiencies of sulphur (S) and micronutrients [zinc (Zn), boron (B), iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn)] in agricultural soils of India for devising effective management strategies to achieve sustainable crop production, improved nutritional quality in crops and better animal/human health. A total of 2,42,827 surface (0–15 cm depth) soil samples were collected from agriculture fields of 615 districts lying in 28 states of India and were analysed for available S and micronutrients concentration. The study was carried out under the aegis of All India Coordinated Research Project on Micro- and Secondary-Nutrients and Pollutant Elements in Soils and Plants. The mean concentrations were 27.0 ± 29.9 mg kg⁻¹ for available S, 1.40 ± 1.60 mg kg⁻¹ for available Zn and 1.40 ± 4.70 mg kg⁻¹ for available B, 31.0 ± 52.2 mg kg⁻¹ for available Fe, 2.30 ± 3.50 mg kg⁻¹ for available Cu and 17.5 ± 21.4 mg kg⁻¹ for available Mn. There were variable and widespread deficiencies of S and micronutrients in different states. The deficiencies (acute deficient + deficient + latent deficiency) of S (58.6% of soils), Zn (51.2% of soils) and B (44.7% of soils) were higher compared to the deficiencies of Fe (19.2% of soils), Cu (11.4% of soils) and Mn (17.4% of soils). Out of 615 districts, > 50% of soils in 101, 131 and 86 districts were deficient in available S, available Zn and available B, respectively. Whereas, > 25% of soils in 83, 5 and 41 districts had deficiencies of available Fe, available Cu and available Mn, respectively. There were occurrences of 2-nutrients deficiencies such S + Zn (9.30% of soils), Zn + B (8.70% of soils), S + B (7.00% of soils) and Zn + Fe (5.80% of soils) to a greater extent compared to the deficiencies of Zn + Mn (3.40% of soils), S + Fe (3.30% of soils), Zn + Cu (2.80% of soils) and Fe + B (2.70% of soils). Relatively lower % of soils were deficient in 3-nutrients (namely S + Zn + B, S + Zn + B and Zn + Fe + B), 4-nutrients (namely Zn + Fe + Cu + Mn) and 5-nutrients (namely Zn + Fe + Cu + Mn + B) simultaneously. The information regarding the distribution of deficiencies of S and micronutrients (both single and multi-nutrients) could be used by various stakeholders for production, supply and application of right kind of fertilizers in different districts, states and agro-ecological regions of India for better crop production, crop nutritional quality, nutrient use efficiency, soil health and for tackling human and animal malnutrition.

Assessing the Role of Soils When Developing Sustainable Agricultural Production Systems Focused on Achieving the UN-SDGs and the EU Green Deal

The general concept of sustainable development has been specified in terms of goals, targets, and indicators by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015, followed by the Green Deal of the European Union in 2019. The focus on targets and indicators does, however, not address the issue as to how these goals can be achieved for land-related SDGs in the real world, and attention in this paper is therefore focused on how land management can contribute to providing ecosystem services in line with the aims of the SDGs and the Green Deal. Agricultural production systems should at least produce healthy food (SDG2 and 3), protect ground- and surface water quality (SDG6), mitigate climate change (SDG13), avoid soil degradation, and support biodiversity (SDG15). The corresponding ecosystem services are discussed with particular emphasis on the role of soils, which are characterized in terms of soil health, defined as: contributing to ecosystem services in line with the SDGs and the Green Deal. Appropriate management, as developed and proposed by researchers working jointly with farmers in living labs, can only be realized when it is part of sound long-term business plans, supported by independent advice that is focused on farmers’ concerns based on the requirements for adaptive management. The research effort in living labs, addressing “wicked” problems, needs to be judged differently from classical linear research. As the development of successful ecosystem services requires an interdisciplinary research effort based on a systems analysis, SDG-oriented soil research in the future should be focused on: (i) presenting suitable data to the interdisciplinary effort beyond standard data to be found in existing databases; (ii) using soil types as “carriers of information” to allow extrapolation of results; (iii) providing data with a comparable degree of detail when analyzing the various ecosystem services, and (iv) revisit past experiences in soil survey and soil fertility research when contact with farmers was intense, as is again needed in future to realize ecosystem services in line with the SDGs and the Green Deal.

Assessing the distribution of cadmium under different land-use types and its effect on human health in different gender and age groups

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the toxic elements entering the food chain in various ways, including chemical fertilizers. This study aimed to assess different amounts and forms of available Cd in soils under wheat cultivation affected by long-term use of phosphorus chemical fertilizers and also to study the rate of Cd intake by people with age and gender differences. To investigate the Cd status in wheat-cultivated lands, 105 soil samples and also 24 wheat samples were collected from three land uses of rainfed, irrigated, and control one. Phosphorus levels were also measured in soil samples to investigate the relationship between the amount of chemical fertilizer consumption and the amount of Cd. The mean values of available Cd were 0.15, 0.18, and 0.08 (mg/kg) under three land-use types of rainfed, irrigated, and control one, respectively, and the mean values of total Cd were also 1.9, 2.22, and 1.30 in the rainfed land, irrigated land, and control one, respectively. The results showed that the amount of available and total Cd in the irrigated and rainfed lands was higher than the amount of Cd in the control sample. According to the results of Cd fractionation, the highest amounts of Cd were in the residual, carbonate, organic, soluble, and exchangeable fractions, respectively. The amounts of Cd in the three parts of root, stem, and grain were 1.08, 0.65, 0.91 (mg/kg), respectively. Finally, the results showed that the rate of Cd entry into the children's body was higher than that of adults and the elderly.

Planning for disposal of COVID-19 pandemic wastes in developing countries: a review of current challenges

The health sector is critical to the well-being of any country, but developing countries have several obstacles that prevent them from providing adequate health care. This became an even larger concern after the COVID-19 outbreak left millions of people dead worldwide and generated huge amounts of infected or potentially infected wastes. The management and disposal of medical wastes during and post-COVID-19 represent a major challenge in all countries, but this challenge is particularly great for developing countries that do not have robust waste disposal infrastructure. The main problems in developing countries include inefficient treatment procedures, limited capacity of healthcare facilities, and improper waste disposal procedures. The management of medical wastes in most developing countries was primitive prior to the pandemic. The improper treatment and disposal of these wastes in our current situation may further speed COVID-19 spread, creating a serious risk for workers in the medical and sanitation fields, patients, and all of society. Therefore, there is a critical need to discuss emerging challenges in handling, treating, and disposing of medical wastes in developing countries during and after the COVID-19 outbreak. There is a need to determine best disposal techniques given the conditions and limitations under which developing countries operate. Several open questions need to be investigated concerning this global issue, such as to what extent developing countries can control the expected environmental impacts of COVID-19, particularly those related to medical wastes? What are the projected management scenarios for medical wastes under the COVID-19 outbreak? And what are the major environmental risks posed by contaminated wastes related to COVID-19 treatment? Studies directed at the questions above, careful planning, the use of large capacity mobile recycling facilities, and following established guidelines for disposal of medical wastes should reduce risk of COVID-19 spread in developing countries.

Synergistically promoting plant health by harnessing synthetic microbial communities and prebiotics

Soil-borne diseases cause serious economic losses in agriculture. Managing diseases with microbial preparations is an excellent approach to soil-borne disease prevention. However, microbial preparations often exhibit unstable effects, limiting their large-scale application. This review introduces and summarizes disease-suppressive soils, the relationship between carbon sources and the microbial community, and the application of human microbial preparation concepts to plant microbial preparations. We also propose an innovative synthetic microbial community assembly strategy with synergistic prebiotics to promote healthy plant growth and resistance to disease. In this review, a new approach is proposed to improve traditional microbial preparations; provide a better understanding of the relationships among carbon sources, beneficial microorganisms, and plants; and lay a theoretical foundation for developing new microbial preparations.

Integrated Approach for Quality Assessment of Technosols in Experimental Mesocosms

The assessment of Technosols quality in urban environments is pivotal for the maintenance of ecosystems impacted by human activities. The study was performed on Technosols constructed in experimental mesocosms in the suburban area of Naples (Southern Italy) to highlight changes in the main soil properties over eight years and to identify the most suitable indices at quality monitoring. In this study, several chemical, biological, and integrated indices were analysed to evaluate the mineral accumulation, potential ecological risk, edaphon activity, fertility, and the overall soil quality. The Technosols showed alkaline pH, nitrogen ranged from 24.5 to 39.5 g kg−1, high organic matter contents above 40 g kg−1, and there were no evident processes of soil compaction. Heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) did not exceed the thresholds defined by the Italian law for urban soils, despite their volcanic components. During eight years, the chemical indices depicted changes in the elements balance and increase in ecological risk; the biological indices indicated a reduction in the fungal fraction (fivefold) and in the resources utilisation and carbon storage. The soil quality index with all parameters highlighted the reduction in the soil quality (from 0.78 to 0.65) due to the decrease of the chemical quality, the increase of microbial stress conditions, and changes of the microbial composition, underlining the importance of integrating chemical and biological information for monitoring Technosols.

The role of soils in provision of genetic, medicinal and biochemical resources

Intact, 'healthy' soils provide indispensable ecosystem services that largely depend on the biotic activity. Soil health is connected with human health, yet, knowledge of the underlying soil functioning remains incomplete. This review highlights selected services, i.e. (i) soil as a genetic resource and hotspot of biodiversity, forming the basis for providing (ii) biochemical resources and (iii) medicinal services and goods. Soils harbour an unrivalled biodiversity of organisms, especially microorganisms. Some of the abilities of autochthonous microorganisms and their relevant enzymes serve (i) to improve natural soil functions and in particular plant growth, e.g. through beneficial plant growth-promoting, symbiotic and mycorrhizal microorganisms, (ii) to act as biopesticides, (iii) to facilitate biodegradation of pollutants for soil bioremediation and (iv) to yield enzymes or chemicals for industrial use. Soils also exert direct effects on human health. Contact with soil enriches the human microbiome, affords protection against allergies and promotes emotional well-being. Medicinally relevant are soil substrates such as loams, clays and various minerals with curative effects as well as pharmaceutically active organic chemicals like antibiotics that are formed by soil microorganisms. By contrast, irritating minerals, soil dust inhalation and misguided soil ingestion may adversely affect humans. The Monitoring of Selected Heavy Metals Content and Bioavailability in the Soil-Plant System and Its Impact on Sustainability in Agribusiness Food Chains

This study assisted in identifying and preventing the increase in heavy metals in soil and winter wheat. Its accumulation can affect cultivated crops, quality and crop yields, and consumers’ health. Selected heavy metals were analyzed using the GTAAS method. They were undertaken on selected heavy metals content (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in arable soils at three sites in Slovakia and their accumulation in parts of cultivated winter wheat. Our study showed that the limit value of Cd in soil samples was exceeded in the monitored arable soils from 2017–2019. The average content values of Cu and Zn did not exceed the limit values, even in Pb values (except for the spring period). The analyses also showed that the heavy metals content for plants bioavailable in soil did not exceed the statutory critical values for Cd, Cu, and Zn’s average content values. However, Pb content exceeded permitted critical values. Heavy metals bioaccumulation (Zn, Cu) was within the limit values in wheat. Analyzed Cd content in wheat roots and Pb content were determined in all parts of wheat except grain. The study showed that grain from cultivated winter wheat in monitored arable soils is not a risk for consumers.
