Abstract
BACKGROUND Interprofessional collaboration involves coordinated efforts by individuals from different professions. Trust is defined as an individual's willingness to be vulnerable within a relationship, while expecting the other party to act in their best interests. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of collaboration and trust among dental and medical professionals in Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study evaluated the attitudes of collaboration and trust among dental and medical professionals in Saudi Arabia using an online self-reported questionnaire distributed via social media. Data analysis was performed using SPSS. RESULTS The overall mean score for collaborative attitude was 6.2 (SD = 1.52), with 69.23% of participants exhibiting a positive attitude about collaboration. Participants rated family medicine (76.67%) and pediatric medicine (76.41%) as the medical specialties most relevant to dentistry, while obstetrics/gynecology was rated the lowest (32.31%). Dental professionals had a significantly higher mean score for collaborative attitude (m = 6.46, SD = 1.48) than did medical professionals (m = 5.93, SD = 1.51; p < 0.001). The score for dental professionals' trust in medical professionals (DTM) (m = 36.94, SD = 8.06) was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than the score for medical professionals' trust in dental professionals (MTD) (m = 33.81, SD = 8.20). The collaborative attitude scores among dental and medical professionals were not statistically significant when tested against the MTD score (p = 0.777) and DTM score (p = 0.419). CONCLUSIONS There is a high level of collaborative attitude and trust between dental and medical professionals in Saudi Arabia. Dentists exhibit a higher degree of these attributes than medical professionals. These findings support the implementation of a collaborative medical-dental education framework in Saudi Arabia, where both specialties can train together during their undergraduate years.

Abstract
Shame can arise during patient-health professional encounters when discussing traumatising and stigmatising topics and can contribute to negative patient outcomes. This review aims to summarise what is known regarding shame in patient-health professional encounters. We conducted a scoping review using Levac and colleagues' approach and reported the findings using the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. We searched four databases (CINAHL, PsychINFO, PubMed and SocINDEX) for empirical studies that involved shame in patient-health professional encounters contextualised by trauma or stigma and were published in English. We categorised what is known regarding shame in empirical studies using inductive content analysis. We also collected stakeholders' perspectives on the review findings through an online survey. Our initial search yielded 3658 articles, of which 37 were included. We summarised the literature into four categories: (1) What health professionals say they do in patient-health professional encounters, (2) What health professionals think patients feel in patient-health professional encounters, (3) Patients' descriptions of their own shame during patient-health professional encounters and (4) Health professionals' descriptions of their own shame during patient-health professional encounters. Shame can arise in a variety of circumstances during patient-health professional encounters. More research is needed to identify what specific communication strategies used by health professionals during patient-health professional encounters contribute to or avoid patient shame.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to examine what kinds of dental anxiety management techniques dentists use in the context of one-session treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS The data consisted of videotaped treatment sessions for five dentally anxious adults. The treatment was conducted by two experienced dentists without formal training in the treatment of dentally anxious patients or behavioral management techniques. Theory-driven qualitative content analysis, based on the anxiety management classification of Milgrom et al. was used to identify and classify the techniques used during the treatments. RESULTS Altogether, diverse categories of dental anxiety management techniques were identified under the main themes of enhancing trust and control and psychological management. Techniques that fell into enhancing trust and control included the categories of 'building a trustful relationship', 'informational control', and 'behavioral control'. These techniques were used consistently throughout the sessions. Additionally, psychological management techniques were identified and classified as 'behavioral strategies: relaxing the body' and 'cognitive strategies: relaxing the mind', which were regularly used in specific situations. CONCLUSION The results indicate that a variety of dental anxiety management techniques were used during one-session treatments. The findings provide valuable insights for dentists in managing their patients with dental anxiety and improving their overall treatment experience.

Abstract
Background A trusting dentist-patient relationship is pivotal in providing person-centred care. This scoping review aims to identify how trust is defined, measured and perceived by dental professionals.Methods The Joanna Briggs Institute framework was adopted. A search strategy was developed using MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms and key words. Medline/PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL were searched. Data were synthesised using thematic analysis.Findings In total, 16 studies were included that frequently used quantitative research methodology. Only four studies provided definition of trust. Many studies employed either Dental Trust Scale or Dental Beliefs Survey to measure dentist-patient trust, although others developed their own items. Limited research suggested that the dental professionals appreciated communication was paramount to building a trusting relationship with patients.Conclusion No consensus was found on the definition of trust, nor on a preferred assessment tool to measure dentist-patient trust. The limited evidence intimated that dental professionals acknowledged the importance of effective communication in building a trusting alliance with patients. The scarcity of relevant research highlights the need for more robust investigations of trust in dental care.

Abstract
The main aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the prevalence of dental fear among Finnish conscripts. Other aims were to study the association between dental fear and cariological status as well as their self-reported, dentition-related well-being. The study material consisted of 13,564 men and 255 women conscripts who underwent oral examinations. Of those, 8713 responded to a computer-based questionnaire. The mean number of decayed teeth (DT) was used in analyses for cariological status. Self-reported dental fear, dentition-related well-being and regular check-ups were analysed. Data were analysed with cross tables, Pearson Chi-Square tests, Fisher’s exact test and binary logistic regressive analysis. High dental fear or finding dental visits very scary was associated with DT > 2 both among women (14.6%, when DT = 0; 33.3%, when DT > 2) and men conscripts (2.3% and 10.8%, respectively). In addition, those reporting that dental health had a negative impact on their well-being and had no regular check-ups were more likely to need cariological treatment than the rest. A high education level, both one’s own and parental, was a protective factor for restorative treatment need in male conscripts. The findings of this study support the concept of a vicious cycle of dental fear and dental caries. A preventive, interactive way of work by dental teams would most likely be beneficial for dental health, avoiding the development of dental fear, and dentition-related well-being.

Abstract
The quality of patient-provider communication can predict the healthcare outcomes in patients, and therefore, training dental providers to handle the communication effort with patients is crucial. In our previous work, we developed an ontology model that can standardize and represent patient-provider communication, which can later be integrated in conversational agents as tools for dental communication training. In this study, we embark on enriching our previous model with an ontology of patient personas to portray and express types of dental patient archetypes. The Ontology of Patient Personas that we developed was rooted in terminologies from an OBO Foundry ontology and dental electronic health record data elements. We discuss how this ontology aims to enhance the aforementioned dialogue ontology and future direction in executing our model in software agents to train dental students.

Abstract
Effective communication forges the dentist-patient treatment alliance and is thus essential for providing person-centred care. Social rank theory suggests that shame, trust, communication and anxiety are linked together, they are moderated by socio-economic position. The study is aimed to propose and test an explanatory model to predict dental attendance behaviours using person-centred and socio-economic position factors. A secondary data analysis was conducted on a cross-sectional representative survey of a two-stage cluster sample of adults including England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Data were drawn from structured interview. Path analysis of proposed model was calculated following measurement development and confirmation of reliable constructs. The findings show model fit was good. Dental anxiety was predicted negatively by patient’s trust and positively by reported dentist communication. Patient’s shame was positively associated with dental anxiety, whereas self-reported dental attendance was negatively associated with dental anxiety. Both patient’s trust and dentist’s communication effects were moderated by social class. Manual classes were most sensitive to the reported dentist’s communications. Some evidence for the proposed model was found. The relationships reflected in the model were illuminated further when social class was introduced as moderator and indicated dentists should attend to communication processes carefully across different categories of patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study attitudes to dental visits in a child population attending public dental health care between 1973 and 2013. METHODS Random samples of individuals aged 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 years took part in cross-sectional studies based on clinical parameters and a questionnaire, all repeated every 10 years using the same study design. One question related to dental attitude; "What do you feel at the prospect of an appointment with a dentist?". The affirmative answers were full of expectation, unaffected, ill at ease, frightened and sick, representing positive, neutral and negative attitudes. During the same 40-year period, a dental health care system based on prevention and regular dental appointments was reinforced. RESULTS In preschool children, the most pronounced change was an increase in the number of children reporting full of expectation during the study period. In 10-, 15- and 20-year-olds, there was an increase in unaffected and a decrease in ill at ease over time. A reduction in frightened was only seen in the 20-year-olds. CONCLUSIONS Despite a simultaneous dramatic decline in caries and a reduced need for operative dental treatment, the dental attitudes were fairly constant during the 40-year period. The moderate shifts to more positive or neutral dental attitudes were merely seen during the first 10 or 20 years. After this, the changes in answers were limited. This leads to the assumption that factors other than dental treatment experiences have an impact on dental attitudes in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of dental anxiety (DA) among adolescents in Tromsø and Balsfjord region in northern Norway and present a multivariate logistic regression model to predict high dental anxiety scores (DASs) among these adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used self-report questionnaires and clinical dental examination data from adolescents registered in upper secondary school (15-18 years of age) in this region (n = 986). Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) when using Corah's DAS as a dichotomous dependent variable. RESULTS Twelve percent of the respondents reported a DAS score ≥13, indicating high DA. The strongest predictors for reporting high DA were anticipated pain at the dentist, 'external control belief', avoidance, low social motivation on oral health behaviour and sex. In this population, dental caries (DMFS), symptoms of psychological distress (HSCL-10) and self-motivation concerning oral health behaviour did not differ significantly between those reporting high DA (DAS ≥13) and those that reported low DA (DAS ≤12). CONCLUSIONS Severe DA in adolescence is a dental public health challenge and this study shows that DA is a hindrance to seeking dental treatment irrespective of dental status. Dental anxiety should have a higher focus on preventive oral health strategies and have a higher priority in public dentistry to avoid this problem to escalate into adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of studies about how adolescents experience the interaction during dental visits. The experienced interaction during dental visits will influence how adolescents take care of their oro-dental health, and how they attend at the dentist's office. AIM To explore the interaction experiences during dental visits of 18-year-olds with or without a history of caries. DESIGN The dental health status at age 15 years was used as a predictor of subsequent interaction experiences with the dental staff. The dental health status was assessed by the Decayed Missed Filled Teeth index and interaction experiences by the Patient Dental Staff Interaction Questionnaire. RESULTS Adolescents with a history of caries experienced the interaction at dental visits significantly more often negatively than adolescents with healthy teeth. The association was significant after adjustment for potential confounding factors (sense of coherence, gender, and duration of maternal basic education). CONCLUSIONS Understanding, encouraging, and appropriate interaction with adolescents with caries may make patients more positive and receptive for treatment and self-care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate adult Finns' perceptions about communication with the dentist during their latest visit in three aspects: receiving adequate information about health status and care, being listened to and shown interest by the dentist, and being able to influence the treatment decisions. METHODS Data were taken from the Health 2011 Survey (BRIH8901). A representative sample (n = 5806) of adult Finns aged over 29 years old was interviewed or alternatively filled in a questionnaire. Basic descriptive tabulations, Rao-Scott chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were used to study how socioeconomic status, perceived oral health and oral Health care variables are associated with the three aspects of communication with the dentist. RESULTS Most (85%-90%) adult Finns felt that, during their latest visit to a dentist, they had received adequate information, were listened to and shown interest by their dentist, and that they had been able to influence the treatment decisions. Those who perceived poor oral health, felt visiting dentist somewhat frightening, were in a difficult economic situation, visited a public dentist, or tended to visit oral Health care services irregularly, felt more often that there was a deficit in communication with the dentist. CONCLUSIONS In 2011, most adult Finns did not report any deficit in communication with the dentist during their latest visit. Oral Health care professionals should focus more on communicating with patients who have economic problems, poor oral health, dental fear or a problem-oriented visiting pattern.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to design a structured treatment model focusing on all levels of adult's dental fear, the Jönköping Dental Fear Coping Model (DFCM). The aim was to study the DFCM from a dental health professional perspective. MATERIAL AND METHODS The DFCM was studied by means of quantitative and qualitative analyses. Nine dental clinics participated in Period I (pre-intervention/standard care), and 133 dental health professionals (dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants) and 3088 patients were included. After completion of Period I, four of the clinics were randomized to Period II (intervention), beginning with the professionals undergoing DFCM training. Following that, 51 dental health professionals treated 1417 patients according to the DFCM. The other five clinics served as controls. RESULTS Half or more of the dental health professionals assessed the model as better than standard care, regarding anamnesis and diagnostics, communication and contact, and understanding of patients and dental fear. The dental health professionals reported higher tension in their fearful patients in Period II compared with Period I, possibly due to their increased awareness of dental fear. CONCLUSIONS The qualitative data suggest that dental health professionals find the DFCM beneficial in routine dental care. The model promotes a holistic approach to the treatment of adult patients. However, stress among the professionals was not reduced when measured, neither quantitatively nor qualitatively. It is important to evaluate the model in further studies to make it possible to draw generalizable conclusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Existing measures of children's dental anxiety have not been developed with children or based on a theoretical framework of dental anxiety. AIM To develop the children's experiences of dental anxiety measure (CEDAM) and evaluate the measure's properties. DESIGN The measure was developed from interviews with dentally anxious children. Children recruited from a dental hospital and secondary school completed the CEDAM and Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDAS). A subgroup of children completed the CEDAM before and after receiving an intervention to reduce dental anxiety to examine the measure's responsiveness. Rasch and Classical test analyses were undertaken. RESULTS Children were aged between 9 and 16 years (N = 88 recruited from a dental hospital and N = 159 recruited from a school). Rasch analysis confirmed the measure's unidimensionality. The CEDAM correlated well with the MCDAS (rho = 0.67, P < 0.01) and had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.98). The CEDAM was also able to detect changes in dental anxiety following the intervention (baseline mean = 22.36, SD = 2.57 and follow-up mean = 18.88, SD = 2.42, t(df = 37) = 9.54, P < 0.01, Cohen's d = 1.39). CONCLUSIONS The results support the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the CEDAM. Initial findings indicate it has potential for use in future intervention trials or in clinical practice to monitor children's dental anxiety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Dental anxiety, fear and phobia have different etiology, response patterns, time courses, and intensities that justify a clear distinction between these constructs. Differentiation of dental anxiety, fear or phobia in practice is a critical prerequisite for developing and implementing effective treatment for children. The aim of this study was to investigate whether current researches in the pediatric dentistry appropriately discriminate the central construct of dental anxiety, fear and phobia. We also highlighted the specific methodological issues in the assessment of these issues in pediatric dentistry. STUDY DESIGN A systematic search was conducted in Pubmed/medline and Scopus for articles which assessed dental anxiety, fear or phobia in children. RESULTS 104 research papers were included in the review that had made a distinction between dental anxiety, fear and phobia and had not used them interchangeably. Only five studies used different clinical measures or cut-offs to discriminate between dental anxiety, fear and phobia. CONCLUSION The dental literature appears unable to capture and also measure the multi-sided construct of dental anxiety, fear and phobia and, therefore, there was a tendency to use them interchangeably.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the compatibility of dental hygienist education with working life from the perspective of their educators. METHODS We conducted a qualitative study among principal educators of dental hygienists in Finland in 2012-2013. The participants were leading educators of dental hygienists (n = 13) from the four Finnish education units. We used semi-structured interviews based on previous Nordic studies to collect the data and analysed them using inductive content analysis. RESULTS According to the educators, dental hygienists' skills at work are neither fully nor effectively utilized, even though their education meets the needs of working life quite well. The educators felt that hygienists' professional competence would prove more useful in health promotion and orthodontic measures and that the division of labour should be clearer. Clarifying this distinction in periodontal therapy could be improved. CONCLUSION Fully utilizing dental hygienists' competence in clinical work would benefit from further development. The content of dental hygienists' clinical work should be reassessed so as to utilize their skills more fully. The compatibility of dental hygienist education corresponds largely to the needs of future working life.
