Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study aimed to determine the association between sleep duration and quality with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among the Iranian older persons. METHODS This study was conducted on a representative sample of 3452 Iranian older people (≥ 60 years) who participated in the Iranian Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IRLSA) launched in Neyshabur (Razavi Khorasan province, northeastern Iran). The Persian versions of 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were utilized to measure the level of HRQoL and the level of sleep duration and quality, respectively. Multiple linear regression model was performed to analyze the data and clarify the independent association of sleep duration and quality with HRQoL. RESULTS More than half of the study population (52.4%) suffered from poor sleep quality. 57.3% and 3.9% of individuals were short sleepers (< 7 h) and long sleepers (equal or more than 9 h), respectively. The total score of HRQoL was achieved 65.87 ± 20.55. After adjusting the covariates, the results indicated that short sleep duration was negatively associated with HRQoL (P < 0.05), whereas no significant associations were found between long sleep duration and HRQoL (P > 0.05). Interestingly, the results of multiple linear regression model revealed a significant negative association between poor sleep quality and HRQoL (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The current study confirmed that short sleep duration and poor sleep quality were independently associated with lower HRQoL in the older persons. Therefore, interventional courses should be planned to enrich sleep-related healthcare and general HRQoL in the older persons.

Abstract
The understanding of the prevalence of sleep problems in older adults can provide a broad and reliable perspective into the occurrence of such issues among older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the worldwide prevalence of sleep problems in community-dwelling older adults. Studies that provide information on the prevalence of sleep problems in community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years) were screened between December 2022 and March 2023. A total of 20,379 studies were identified in database searches, from which 252 were included in this review. These studies covered the last 35 years (from 1988 to 2023) and pooled a sample of 995,544 participants from 36 countries. The most frequent sleep problem worldwide was obstructive sleep apnea (46.0%), followed by poor sleep quality (40.0%), other sleep problems (37.0%), insomnia (29.0%), and excessive daytime sleepiness (19.0%). No significant difference in the prevalence estimates of all sleep problems was observed between the sexes. This systematic review and meta-analysis showed a high prevalence of some sleep problems, mainly obstructive sleep apnea, poor sleep quality, and other sleep problems. Our estimates can be useful for managers and policymakers in planning healthcare strategies for sleep problems aimed at the older population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most common symptom and reason patients seek treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome is lack of sleep. Our purpose was to determine how much sleep-related symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome improve after carpal tunnel release using validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and objective sleep data as primary measures of interest. METHODS A PRISMA-guided literature search was conducted using Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Only interventional clinical trials that examined primary outcome measures of interest were included. Patient-reported outcome measures underwent meta-analysis to determine how much scores improved following carpal tunnel release. RESULTS The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index improved significantly after carpal tunnel release, by 4.43 points and 6.02 points at 1-3 and 6-12 months postoperatively, respectively, and continued to improve up to 2 years. Improvement on the Insomnia Severity Index after carpal tunnel release was also significant, with improvement up to 1 year postoperatively, by 8.54 points and 9.05 points at 1-3 and 6-12 months, respectively. Insomnia Severity Index scores improved significantly after splinting as well. CONCLUSIONS The present meta-analysis determined to what extent patients can expect their sleep to improve after operative and non-operative intervention, as measured by various patient-reported outcome measures that assess sleep. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Insomnia Severity Index correlated very well between studies and across hundreds of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Data are lacking to define the minimal clinically important difference and assess whether patients achieve a minimal clinically important difference for sleep questionnaires; more information on this topic is needed. Abstract
The current study was conducted to evaluate sleep disturbances by age group in patients who underwent carpal tunnel decompression (CTD). Individuals who applied to the orthopedic outpatient clinic and had CTD between 2018 and 2022 had their medical records reviewed. Pre-operative data included patient demographics and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). All post-surgery patients who returned for suture removal were clinically evaluated. Patients were requested to return for re-scoring on the PSQI 6 months after CTD. The cases' average age was 56.44±9.37 years. The study divided its subjects into two age ranges: those between the ages of 45 and 60 (82.2%) (Group1) and those between the ages of 70 and 85 (17.8%) (Group 2). The PSQI values of Group 1 were found to be significantly lower than Group 2. Preoperative PSQI levels were compared to post-op values at 2 weeks and 6 months, and both measurements decreased significantly. Sleep quality improved in all patient groups, regardless of their age, following CTD. Elderly patients had delayed improvements in sleep quality following CTD. The PSQI was effective in determining improvement following CTD, particularly in younger patients, and the progress remained for 6 months.

Abstract
Recent decades have seen a surge of scientific interest in happiness. However, its theoretical conceptualization is a work in progress. Much of the literature focuses on two main forms: hedonic (encompassing life satisfaction and positive affect) and eudaimonic (encompassing phenomena such as character development and meaning in life). However, this binary has been critiqued as being incomplete, in part because it reflects a Western-centric perspective that overlooks forms emphasized in non-Western cultures. As a result, scholars have begun to highlight other forms besides hedonia and eudaimonia. This article surveys the literature to identify 16 potential forms in total, classified according to whether they primarily pertain to feelings (hedonic, contented, mature, chaironic, and vital), thought (evaluative, meaningful, intellective, aesthetic, and absorbed) or action (eudaimonic, masterful, accomplished, harmonic, nirvanic, and relational). This article thus offers a more expansive, albeit still just provisional, taxonomy of this vital and still-evolving topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep is a potential modifiable risk factor for later life development cognitive impairment. The aim of this study is to examine if subjective measures of sleep duration and sleep disturbance predict future cognitive decline in a population-based cohort of 60, 66, 72 and 78-year-olds with a maximal follow up time of 18 years. METHODS This study included participants from the Swedish National Study on Ageing and Care - Blekinge, with assessments 2001-2021. A cohort of 60 (n = 478), 66 (n = 623), 72 (n = 662) and 78 (n = 548) year-olds, were assessed at baseline and every 6 years until 78 years of age. Longitudinal associations between sleep disturbance (sleep scale), self-reported sleep duration and cognitive tests (Mini Mental State Examination and the Clock drawing test) were examined together with typical confounders (sex, education level, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking status, physical inactivity and depression). RESULTS There was an association between sleep disturbance at age 60 and worse cognitive function at ages 60, 66 and 72 years in fully adjusted models. The association was attenuated after bootstrap-analysis for the 72-year-olds. The items of the sleep scale most predictive of later life cognition regarded nightly awakenings, pain and itching and daytime naps. Long sleep was predictive of future worse cognitive function. CONCLUSION Sleep disturbance was associated with worse future cognitive performance for the 60-year-olds, which suggests poor sleep being a risk factor for later life cognitive decline. Questions regarding long sleep, waking during the night, pain and itching and daytime naps should be further explored in future research and may be targets for intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The effect of chronic pain on the elderly population is enormous in terms of both human suffering and cost. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with chronic low back pain in older adults by performing a comprehensive geriatric assessment. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 225 elderly patients admitted to a geriatric outpatient clinic. All participants underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment, and factors related to chronic low back pain were assessed. Participants were grouped as those with and without chronic pain. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 72.9±6.9 years, and 149 (66.2%) of them had chronic pain complaints. The number of chronic diseases and medications, depressive symptom scores, and sleep quality scores were higher, and quality of life (European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions index and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions visual analog scale) and nutritional status scores were lower in the chronic pain group. The pain visual analog scale score had a statistically significant moderate negative correlation with the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions index (r=-0.440, p=0.000) and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions visual analog scale (r=-0.398, p=0.000) scores. The male gender was associated with a reduced risk of chronic pain, while poor sleep quality and number of comorbidities were associated with an increased risk of chronic pain (p=0.000, OR 0.20, p=0.021, OR 2.54, and p=0.010, OR 1.40, respectively). CONCLUSION: Chronic pain is common and independently associated with poor sleep quality, an increased number of diseases, and female gender. The results of our study may guide pain management in older individuals.

Abstract
Purpose Urban-rural health disparity is one of the most prominent challenges in China today. The goal of this study is to find differences in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its associated factors among older people in urban and rural areas. Methods A multi-stage stratified sampling method was conducted in Shanxi Province, with a total of 3250 older adults participated in this cross-sectional survey. HRQoL was assessed using the Chinese version of the EQ-5D-5L. Tobit regression models were employed to identify associated factors for HRQoL. Results The mean EQ-5D utility score of the total sample was 0.87± 0.23, with a statistically significant difference observed between urban (0.89 ± 0.22) and rural areas (0.86 ± 0.23). Obesity (Coe=−0.10, p=0.021) and nutrition awareness (Coe=−0.14, p=0.009) were two unique associated factors to rural older adults’ HRQoL. While, age (Urban: Coe=0.13, p=0.001; Rural: Coe=−0.019, p<0.001), socioeconomic status (Urban: Coe=0.13, p<0.001; Rural: Coe=0.14, p<0.001), number of chronic non-communicable diseases (Urban: Coe=−0.20, p<0.001; Rural: Coe=−0.15, p<0.001), sleep quality (Urban: Coe=−0.22, p<0.001; Rural: Coe=0.15, p<0.001) and daytime sleepiness (Urban: Coe=−0.13, p<0.001; Rural: Coe=−0.13, p<0.001) were found to be associated with HRQoL regardless of the residential area. Conclusion This study suggested that rural older adults are facing HRQoL disadvantages compared to those in urban area. Accordingly, more attention should be devoted to rural older adults’ HRQoL, particularly to the unique factors like body weight and nutrition awareness. Targeted policies and interventions should be implemented to improve HRQoL and bridge the urban-rural HRQoL gap.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality has a negative effect on pain among older adults. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) state of emergency, lifestyle changes can cause psychologic stressors and lead to poor sleep quality. Aim This study examined whether sleep quality status was associated with low back or knee pain changes during the COVID-19 state of emergency among community-dwelling Japanese old-old adults. Design Cross-sectional investigation. Methods In July 2020, during the COVID-19 epidemic, we conducted a postal survey for old-old adults aged ≥77 years and collected data on 597 participants. For those who had low back or knee pain at the time of the survey (in July), characteristics such as low back pain, knee pain, changes in pain status, and sleep quality status during the COVID-19 state of emergency (in March) were assessed. Results Data from 597 participants showed the prevalence of low back pain (50.6%) and knee pain (40.7%) in July. Of those with low back or knee pain, 374 had pain changes during the state of emergency, with 12.3% worsening. Of these, 23.9% had poor sleep quality in March compared to non-change (p = .008). In a multivariate logistic regression model adjusted for potential confounders, poor sleep quality was significantly associated with pain worsening (odds ratio 2.80, 95% confidence interval 1.26-6.22). Conclusions During the COVID-19 state of emergency, poor sleep quality was associated with worsening low back or knee pain. This may indicate the need to pay attention to poor sleep quality to prevent the exacerbation of pain among old-old adults.

Abstract
This study examined the available literature concerning the association between sleep quality and quality of life (QoL) in autonomous older people with no sleep disorders. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on studies identified in the PsycInfo, PubMed and Scopus databases that examined the associations between QoL and sleep quality in older adults. Our systematic literature search identified 23 studies concerning a total of 21,092 participants (range of mean ages: 58-79 years). The results showed that self-reported sleep quality, but not objective sleep quality, correlated positively with QoL with a moderate effect size (for self-reported sleep quality, the overall estimate of the average effect size was a Pearson's r = .28 [95% CI: .34, .23]; for objective sleep quality, it was r = .01 [.12, -.09]). This also applied to the main domains of QoL concerning physical and psychological health, social relationships and environmental aspects (the estimated average effect sizes ranged from Pearson's r = .13 to r = .35). These findings highlight the influence of sleep quality, and particularly of self-reported sleep quality, on QoL (as a whole and in its specific domains) in older adults with normal aging and no insomnia. This influence should therefore be investigated systematically when examining QoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose was to examine whether longitudinal changes in self-reported energy predict incident mobility disability and mortality. We further explored whether changes in energy-related behaviors (physical activity, appetite, or sleep quality) would explain these associations. METHODS N = 2021 participants from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study free from mobility disability and with at least three energy assessments from years 2 to 10. MEASUREMENTS The outcomes were time to first self-reported inability to walk a quarter of a mile (mobility disability) and death. Self-reported energy level (SEL) was a single-item indicator over the prior month, ranging from 0 to 10; person-specific slopes measured whether individuals increased or decreased in SEL across the total follow-up time (mean 7.09 years, +1.72, range 2-8 years). Potential energy-related mediators were baseline and change in self-reported physical activity, appetite, and sleep quality. Covariates were baseline levels and change in demographics, health characteristics and behaviors, tiredness, cognition, mood, and gait speed. RESULTS A total of 947 developed disability and 567 died over the study follow-up. A one-point change in SEL over the follow-up (or an average 0.125 points/year) was inversely associated with a 35% risk of incident mobility disability (hazard ratio = 0.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.55, 0.76, p < 0.001) and 35% risk of death (hazard ratio = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.42, 0.87, p = 0.003), independent of covariates. Potential energy-related mediators did not attenuate this association. CONCLUSIONS In this longitudinal analysis of community-dwelling older adults, energy decline was common and a significant independent predictor of disability risk and mortality.

Abstract
Abstract. Circadian mechanisms and the sleep-wakefulness rhythms guarantee survival, adaptation, efficient action in everyday life or in emergencies and well-being. Disordered circadian processes at central and/or cellular levels, sleep disorders, and unhealthy wakefulness/sleep rhythms can impair the physiological circadian organization and result in subjective, professional, or behavioral changes ranging from functional inadequacy to higher risks at work or on the road to medical relevance. Circadian rhythms and the sleep organization change ontogenetically; major changes result from normal aging and from the multiple diseases that are often associated. There are circular functional interactions involving sleep/sleep disorders, the autonomic and immune systems, and the functional changes in the circadian system due to aging that deserve attention but have been overlooked thus far.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to measure the relationship between sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), in Indian population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS A cross-sectional study, included a total of 300 patients with T2DM. All participants were responding to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D). A PSQI global score ≥5 was defined as poor sleep quality. EQ-5D visual analogue scale (VAS), determining the overall health status. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between PSQI and EQ-5D. All the study data were analysed using the SPSS software version 20.0. Values of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS The mean age of included participants were 55.29. Majority of the participants (55.3%) were identified as "poor sleepers" and female (31.3%) contributing higher proportion. Poor sleepers had significantly lower the HRQoL (p < 0.001). After adjustment, poor sleep quality was significantly associated with a lower HRQoL; EQ-5D index (OR = 1.080, 95%, CI: 1.015-1.148, p < 0.05), and EQ-5D VAS (OR = 1.092, 95%, CI: 1.021-1.176, p < 0.01). Overall, the EQ-5D index and EQ-5D VAS were found to be an independent predictors of sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality is prevalent in Indian T2DM population, and it imparts negative impact on several dimensions of EQ-5D that characterising the daily activities performance. Therefore, further real-world studies are needed to determine the causal relationship between T2DM patients and measure of objective sleep and their impact on health.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the association in frailty and sleep disorder as assessed by the Japanese version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-J) in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs, n = 317, 141 males). Frailty was determined using the following five phenotypes: unintentional body weight loss, self-reported exhaustion, muscle weakness, slow walking speed, and low physical activity. Sleep disorder was defined as patients with PSQI-J score 6 or greater. Robust (phenotype, 0), prefrail (1 or 2 phenotypes) and frailty (3 phenotypes or greater) were observed in 101 (31.9%), 174 (54.9%) and 42 (13.2%), respectively. The median (interquartile range (IQR)) PSQI-J score was 4 (3, 7). Sleep disorder was found in 115 patients (36.3%). The median (IQR) PSQI-J scores in patients of the robust, prefrail, and frail groups were 3 (2, 5), 5 (3, 7), and 8 (4.75, 10.25), respectively (p < 0.0001 between any two groups and overall p < 0.0001). The ratios of sleep disorder in patients with robust, prefrail and frailty were 15.8% (16/101), 39.1% (68/174), and 73.8% (31/42), respectively (overall p < 0.0001). In conclusion, CLD patients with frailty can involve poorer sleep quality. As sleep disorder in CLDs is potentially remediable, future frailty-preventive strategies must take sleep complaints into account.

Abstract
Sleep duration and quality have been associated with poor physical function, but both the temporality of the association and the independence of sleep duration and quality are unclear. We examined the prospective association of sleep duration and quality with physical function impairment and disability in older adults. Data were taken from participants in the Seniors-ENRICA (2012-2015, n= 1,773) and in the ELSA cohort (waves 4 and 6, n=4,885) aged ≥60 years. Sleep duration and quality were self-reported. Physical function impairment and disability was obtained either from self-reports (ENRICA and ELSA) or from performance assessment (ENRICA). Logistic regression models were adjusted for potential confounders. After a follow-up of 2.0-2.8 years, no association was found between changes in sleep duration and physical function impairment or disability. However, in both studies, poor general sleep quality was linked to higher risk of impaired agility [OR: 1.93 (95% CI: 1.30-2.86) in Seniors-ENRICA and 1.65 (1.24-2.18) in ELSA study] and mobility [1.46 (0.98-2.17) in Seniors-ENRICA and 1.59 (1.18-2.15) in ELSA study]. Poor general sleep quality was also associated with decreased physical component summary (PCS) [1.39 (1.05-1.83)], disability in instrumental activities of daily living [1.59 (0.97-2.59)] and in basic activities of daily living [1.73 (1.14-2.64)] in Seniors-ENRICA. In addition, compared to those with no sleep complaints, participants with 2 or more sleep complaints had greater risk of impaired agility, impaired mobility, decreased PCS and impaired lower extremity function in both cohorts. Poor sleep quality was associated with higher risk of physical impairment and disability in older adults from Spain and from England.

Abstract
Our primary objective was to 1) determine the prevalence of pain locus of control (LOC) subscales in a population of older adults with pain conditions, and 2) estimate their associated protective effects on pain outcomes. A mailed survey was sent to a stratified sample of older adults age≥65 with diagnosed back pain, osteoarthritis and/or rheumatoid arthritis. Multivariate logistic regression modeling was used to determine the relative protective associations of positive resources, including LOC, resilience and social networks, on pain outcomes. Among respondents (N = 3,824), 31% were identified as internal; 34% as powerful others; and 35% as chance. In adjusted models, internal was associated with outcomes of lower pain severity, reduced chronic opioid use and increased physical functionality. Powerful others was partially protective; chance was associated with the poorest outcomes. Multidimensional pain programs should incorporate the enhancement of positive resources, including LOC, to maximize the effectiveness of pain management strategies.

Abstract
Sleep disturbance is a frequent symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of median nerve decompression on sleep quality of patients with this condition. The study sample consisted of 41 patients with severe carpal tunnel syndrome who were admitted to our clinic and treated with open median nerve decompression. Sensation and functional recovery of the patients were followed using the Boston Function Questionnaire, the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test and the two-point discrimination test. Symptomatic recovery of the patients was followed by the Boston Symptom Questionnaire. The tests were used before surgery and at three and six months afterwards. Sensory, functional and symptomatic recovery from the third month to the sixth month following surgery also affected sleep parameters and improved the sleep quality of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Abstract
Depression, stress, and poor sleep have been associated with increased pain among older adults; positive resources, such as resilience and social networks, may help to buffer the impacts of these negative attributes on pain outcomes. The primary objective was to determine the relative effects of positive resources and negative attributes on pain outcomes among older adults with diagnosed back pain, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The stratified study sample was identified from older adults ages ≥65 years. Members received a survey assessing positive resources (resilience, social networks), negative attributes (depression, stress, poor sleep), and pain outcomes (severity, interference). Opioid and other medication use was determined from pharmaceutical claims. After weighting to representative distributions of pain conditions and adjusting for survey response bias, multinomial logistic regressions were used to determine the relative associations of positive and negative attributes on pain outcomes. Among survey respondents (N = 4161), prevalence of self-reported pain severity and interference for no/mild, moderate, and severe categories was 61%, 21%, and 18%, and 67%, 16%, and 17%, respectively. In bivariate models, negative attributes of depression, stress, and poor sleep had stronger associations with pain severity and interference than the moderating effects of positive resources of high resilience and diverse social networks. In fully adjusted multivariate models, the strongest associations with moderate and severe pain severity and interference remained depression, stress, and poor sleep. Based on these results, multidimensional pain management strategies should include management of negative attributes along with enhancement of positive resources for effective management of chronic pain.

Abstract
Pain is common in athletes, and pain management in sport has traditionally been equated with injury management. Although both pain and injury interfere with sport performance, they are not synonymous. Acute musculoskeletal injury commonly manifests as nociceptive pain, inflammatory pain, or both. Pain that persists beyond expected injury recovery must account for all potential contributors to pain, including ongoing biomechanical abnormalities, underlying pathophysiology, and psychosocial issues. Pain chronification involves multiple pathophysiologic and neurobehavioral processes that lead from acute injury-related pain to subacute and chronic pain, and must be distinguished from an ongoing biomechanical overuse pattern. The foundation of pain management in athletes is proper pain classification, which involves assessing for any combination of nociceptive/inflammatory pain, neuropathic pain, central sensitization, and autonomic/motor/affective manifestations of pain. Understanding this foundation is critical because there are scant evidence-based guidelines for the management of pain in sport. This chapter will explore the relationship of sport-related injury and pain, and will provide a management framework that is consistent with International Olympic Committee consensus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most previous studies showed an association between sleep impairment in the elderly and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Majority of these studies were conducted in "strong", community-dwelling elderly. AIM To assess the association between subjective sleep impairment and its affective disturbances among frail elderly patients. METHODS The retrospective study included patients 65 years old and above. Data included socio-demographic characteristics, the mini-mental state examination, the short anxiety screening test, the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Patient Health Questionnaire. The patients were asked about sleep complaints. RESULTS The study population consisted of 496 patients. The mean age was 83.7 ± 6.2 years, and only 7 (1.4%) did not report any sleep disturbance. After adjustment, depression symptoms were associated only with decreased overall sleep satisfaction (OR 2.62, 95% CI 1.18-5.81), while anxiety symptoms were associated with decreased overall sleep satisfaction (OR 3.17, 96% CI 1.71-5.88), difficulty falling asleep (OR 3.58, 95% CI 1.96-6.52), waking up during the night (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.63-6.1), morning weakness (OR 2.68, 95% CI 1.44-5.0) and daytime drowsiness (OR 2.39, 95% CI 1.21-4.69). DISCUSSION Sleep impairment is very prevalent among frail elderly and associated much more with anxiety than with depression. CONCLUSION The findings of the present study provide further evidence for the importance in taking a detailed history of sleep habits during the course of the geriatric assessment in frail elderly patients.

Abstract
Purpose The aims of this study were to investigate the distribution of sleep quality and its relationship with the prevalence of pain among rural Chinese people and to explore the association between sleep quality and pain intensity among the general population in real-life settings. Methods This cross-sectional survey included a total of 2052 adults from rural areas in Liuyang, Hunan Province, recruited through random multistage sampling. The distributions of sleep quality and pain prevalence among the participants over a 4-week period were described. Because of multicollinearity among variables, the influence of self-rated sleep quality and psychosocial covariates on pain intensity was explored using a ridge regression model. Results The data showed that participants reporting all categories of sleep quality experienced some degree of pain. Sleep quality, along with physical and mental health, was a negative predictor of pain intensity among the general population. Symptoms of depression positively predicted pain intensity. Conclusion Poor sleep quality increased pain intensity among the participants. Both previous research and the present data suggest that improving sleep quality may significantly decrease pain intensity in the general population. The relationship between sleep and pain may be bidirectional. This finding also suggests that treatment for sleep disorders and insomnia should be addressed in future efforts to alleviate pain intensity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep complaints are common and enduring among old people. The study aimed to extend current knowledge by exploring the effects of episodic versus chronic sleep complaints on a range of physical and mental health outcomes. METHODS Older adults (N = 8934, mean age = 64) who participated in Waves 1, 2 and 4 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) reported sleep and health outcome measures. Episodic sleep complaints, in the first or in the second wave and chronic sleep complaints, in both waves were recorded. Outcomes in Wave 4 included physical symptoms, difficulties in activities of daily living and low quality of life. RESULTS Logistic regressions examined whether episodic and chronic sleep complaints at W1 and W2 predict W4 health outcomes. Chronic sleep complaints predicted worse outcomes, compared to no sleep difficulties and to episodic sleep complaints, even after adjusting for demographic characteristics and previous levels of health. CONCLUSION Sleep complaints and mainly chronic sleep complaints are related to elevated risk of future health and functional problems. Caregivers are encouraged to address sleep complaints and provide their older patients with help before sleep complaints become persistent.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To determine the associations of self-reported sleep quality and duration with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in older Chinese. METHODS We analyzed community-based cross-sectional data of 5,539 individuals aged 60 years and older in the Weitang Geriatric Disease Study. Information of sleep quality and duration were self-reported through participants' responses to predefined questions; HRQOL data were collected by using the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D). We estimated the associations of sleep quality and duration with the EQ-5D index and visual analog scale (VAS) scores using linear regression models. The associations between sleep quality and duration and EQ-5D-detected health problems were modeled using logistic regression. RESULTS In multiple linear models adjusting sociodemographic factors, health conditions, and lifestyle habits, both EQ-5D index and VAS scores declined with deterioration of sleep quality. The coefficients for poor and intermediate sleep quality were -0.053 (95% confidence interval [CI]:-0.065, -0.042) and -0.022 (95% CI: -0.030, -0.013), respectively, in relation to EQ-5D index score. They were -5.2 (95% CI: -6.7, -2.4) and - 3.8 (95% CI: -4.9, -2.7) in modeling the EQ-5D VAS score. HRQOL declined as sleep duration decreased below 7.01 hours or exceeded 8.01 hours, though most of the associations did not reach statistical significance. In multiple logistic models, poor sleep quality was associated with problems of mobility, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/ depression; short sleep duration was associated with mobility problems. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality and extreme sleep durations appeared to be negatively associated with HRQOL in older Chinese adults.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: To study the quality of sleep in very elderly people with chronic pain. Methods: We investigated 51 very elderly people without dementia and with chronic pain according to the Geriatric Pain Measure. Katz and Lawton questionnaires were used to evaluate functionality. The Geriatric Depression Scale and Geriatric Psychosocial Assessment of Pain-induced Depression were also used. Self-perceptions of sleep and quality of sleep were checked using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: Moderate pain was seen in 64.7% participants. The tracking of depression was positive for 41.2%. Poor quality of sleep was noted in 49% of them, but 82.3% perceived that they had a very good, or a good, sleep. The main factors associated with poor sleep quality were measurement of pain, self-perception of sleep, and pain-induced depression. Conclusion: Very elderly people with chronic pain, and without dementia, had a higher prevalence of poor sleep; however, they overestimated their sleep quality. Poor quality of sleep was associated with a poor self-perception of sleep and pain-induced depression.

Abstract
Changes in sleep and cognition occur with advancing age. While both may occur independently of each other, it is possible that alterations in sleep parameters may increase the risk of age-related cognitive changes. This review aimed to understand the relationship between sleep parameters (sleep latency, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency, sleep duration, general sleep complaints) and cognition in community-dwelling adults aged 60 years and older without sleep disorders. Systematic, computer-aided searches were conducted using multiple sleep and cognition-related search terms in PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. Twenty-nine manuscripts met the inclusion criteria. Results suggest an inconsistent relationship between sleep parameters and cognition in older adults and modifiers such as depressive symptoms, undiagnosed sleep apnea and other medical conditions may influence their association. Measures of sleep and cognition were heterogeneous. Future studies should aim to further clarify the association between sleep parameters and cognitive domains by simultaneously using both objective and subjective measures of sleep parameters. Identifying which sleep parameters to target may lead to the development of novel targets for interventions and reduce the risk of cognitive changes with aging.

Abstract
Sleep is implicated in cognitive functioning in young adults. With increasing age, there are substantial changes to sleep quantity and quality, including changes to slow-wave sleep, spindle density, and sleep continuity/fragmentation. A provocative question for the field of cognitive aging is whether such changes in sleep physiology affect cognition (e.g., memory consolidation). We review nearly a half century of research across seven diverse correlational and experimental domains that historically have had little crosstalk. Broadly speaking, sleep and cognitive functions are often related in advancing age, though the prevalence of null effects in healthy older adults (including correlations in the unexpected, negative direction) indicates that age may be an effect modifier of these associations. We interpret the literature as suggesting that maintaining good sleep quality, at least in young adulthood and middle age, promotes better cognitive functioning and serves to protect against age-related cognitive declines.

Abstract
Objective. Sleep disturbances are common in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This study investigates the impact of CTS on sleep quality and clarifies the magnitude of this relationship. Methods. This is a prospective investigation of patients with CTS. Patients responded to the Levine-Katz Carpal Tunnel and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaires to assess symptom severity and quality, respectively. Descriptive and bivariate analyses summarized the findings and assessed the correlations between CTS severity and sleep quality parameters. Results. 66 patients (53F, 13M) were enrolled. Patients reported a sleep latency of 30.0 (±22.5) minutes, with a total sleep time of 5.5 (±1.8) hours nightly. Global PSQI score was 9.0 (±3.8); 80% of patients demonstrated a significant reduction in sleep quality (global PSQI score >5). Increased CTS symptom and functional severity both resulted in a significant reduction in quality and time asleep. Both significantly correlated with subjective sleep latency, sleep disturbance, use of sleep promoting medications, daytime dysfunction, and overall global PSQI score. Conclusions. The findings confirm the correlation of sleep disturbances to CTS, that is, significant reduction of sleep duration and a correlation to sleep quality. Patients sleep 2.5 hours less than recommended and are at risk for comorbid conditions.
