Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim was to determine the effect of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) care training given to hemodialysis (HD) patients on the self-care behaviors of patients. METHODS The randomized controlled experimental study was conducted in the HD unit. The study was carried out with a total of 66 patients. Patients in the intervention group were trained using the AVF Care Education Book for 4 weeks. The study data were collected using the scale for evaluating self-care behaviors related to AVF in HD patients (ASBHD-AVF). Shapiro-Wilk and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, independent t-tests, and ANOVA were used in the SPSS 25.0 package program. RESULTS As a result of the research, it was determined that the average ASBHD-AVF score of the patients in the trained intervention group increased from 54.52 ± 7.41 to 73.77 ± 3.05 (p <0.05). The mean ASBHD-AVF score of the patients in the control group increased from 56.14 ± 4.51 to 58.14 ± 5.93 (p >0.05). When the difference between the two groups was examined, it was determined that the average ASBHD-AVF score of the patients in the intervention group was statistically significantly higher than the control group (p <0.05). CONCLUSION AVF care education given to HD patients improves patients' self-care behaviors. Improved fistula self-care behaviors of patients will contribute to the healthy functioning of the AVF and the effective HD treatment of patients.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the factors that facilitate or hinder nurses in providing patient education. DESIGN A mixed-method systematic review. DATA SOURCES Six databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, MEDLINE and ERIC) were systematically searched for relevant publications. METHODS The study was conducted following the JBI for mixed-method systematic reviews, and the reporting followed the PRISMA guideline. Two researchers independently performed literature screening, literature evaluation, data extraction and synthesis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42023427451. RESULTS Twenty-six eligible articles were included, including 15 quantitative articles, 10 qualitative articles and 2 mixed-methods articles. The resultant synthesis of key findings led to the identification of these barriers and facilitators, categorised into five distinct levels: nurse-related factors, organisational factors, patient-related factors, the nurse-patient relationship and interdisciplinary collaboration. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the factors that facilitate or hinder nurses in providing patient education, suggesting that multifaceted interventions can enhance the practice of patient education in nursing and support the development of appropriate patient education guidelines or public policies. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This review delineates the facilitators and barriers influencing nurses' provision of patient education, offering an initial framework for nursing managers to craft interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of patient education provided by nurses, consequently elevating the overall quality of nursing.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of fluid management, symptom control, and quality of life on education based on the Roy Adaptation Model. This randomized controlled study was conducted with the participation of 107 patients (53 intervention, 54 control). Data were collected using the "Patient Data Collection Form," "Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients Scale," "Dialysis Symptom Index," and "Nottingham Health Profile." The forms were filled out through face-to-face interviews with the patients in the intervention and control groups at the 0th (onset), 1st, and 3rd months. The patients in the intervention group were trained with an education booklet based on the Roy Adaptation Model. The results revealed that the education given according to the Roy Adaptation Model improved the compliance with fluid control, quality of life, and symptom control of hemodialysis patients. It is recommended that education based on the Roy Adaptation Model be systematically used by hemodialysis nurses. The results are limited to the population included in the study, and further research on hemodialysis populations is needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES to assess risk factors for excess fluid volume in hemodialysis patients. METHODS a retrospective case-control study was conducted. A total of 392 patients (196 cases and 196 controls) from two hemodialysis centers were included. Sociodemographic data and 23 risk factors for excess fluid volume were assessed using a data collection form. Data were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS the insufficient knowledge (OR=2.06), excessive fluid intake (OR=2.33), inadequate fluid removal during hemodialysis (OR=2.62) and excessive sodium intake (OR=1.91) risk factors may increase the chance of occurrence of excess fluid volume in hemodialysis patients by approximately two times. Education level (OR=0.95) and age (OR=0.97) are protective factors for excessive fluid volume. CONCLUSIONS knowing these risk factors may help nurses with accurate and rapid diagnostic inference of the risk of excessive fluid volume.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has limited hemodialysis patient's attendance in healthcare centers and receiving diet education. This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of distance learning on the nutrition quality of hemodialysis patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In the single-blind randomized clinical trial, 60 patients undergoing hemodialysis were randomly divided into control (n=30) and experimental (n=30) groups. Before and after the intervention, Dialysis Malnutrition Score (DMS), Malnutrition-Inflammation Score (MIS) (primary outcome), albumin, the total iron-binding capacity of the blood (TIBC), and body mass index (BMI) (Secondary outcome) were investigated. The experimental group received educational content through social networks for three months, whereas the control group received routine care and training. Results There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean of DMS, MIS, albumin, and TIBC before the intervention. Pre-test BMI had a confounding effect; therefore, an analysis of covariance was performed to eliminate that effect. This analysis showed significant differences in the post-test mean DMS, MIS, TIBC, and BMI between the two groups. In the control group, significant differences were observed in MIS and BMI toward deterioration. The results also indicated a significant relationship between education level and age with TIBC and between marital status and albumin index. Conclusion Distance learning can be considered by healthcare managers and police makers as a suitable alternative to the classic face-to-face learning method to enhance hemodialysis patients' nutrition quality during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Strict adherence to a diet is an essential pillar of long-term treatment for many inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs). Tools that educate patients about dietary management can positively condition adherence and prevent morbidity. We designed a free online dietary calculation program (Odimet®, version 2.1.) for IEMs patients in 2008, updated in 2022, that provides detailed information on the content of amino acids, protein, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in >3000 food products, including specific medical foods for IEM. We analyzed the statistics on visits to Odimet® to evaluate its usefulness for long-term dietary management during a 5-year period focusing on three periods: pre-pandemic (15 March 2018-14 March 2020); pandemic 1 (15 March 2020-14 March 2021); and pandemic 2 period (15 March 2021-15 March 2023), in 120 patients with the following distribution: 84 patients with phenylketonuria (PKU); 12 with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD); 11 with urea cycle disorders (UCDs); and 13 with classical galactosemia. The evolutionary levels of their specific metabolic markers were evaluated, showing that globally, both pediatric and adult patients maintain a good metabolic control, even during a pandemic (median levels of phenylalanine in pediatric PKU patients 213.4 µmol/L and 482.3 µmol/L in adults; of leucine in MSUD patients: 144.2 µmol/L; of glutamine in UCDs: 726.8 µmol/L; and of galactose 1-phosphate levels in galactosemia: 0.08 µmol/L). The proportion of patients using Odimet® ranges from 78-100%. An increase in the number of diets being calculated was observed during COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, 14,825 products have been introduced (3094 from the general database, and 11,731 added by users to their own profiles). In 2023 63 emergency dietary adjustments in the studied intoxication-type pathologies were calculated in Odimet®. Our results suggest that its regular use contributes to maintaining metabolic stability in IEMs patients, allowing them to adapt their menus to their lifestyle, and represents a powerful complementary tele-health tool which can be used to perform remote real-time dietary follow-up.

Abstract
Introduction Objective: dietary advice provided through a nutritional intervention program (NIP) is recommended by renal clinic guidelines to prevent or treat malnutrition, that could improve quality of life (QoL) and survival in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This study set out to evaluate the effect of a personalized NIP on the nutritional status and its impact on QoL and mortality in dialyzed patients. Material and methods: this was a 12-month intervention study with regular follow-up in which nutritional parameters were measured at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. QoL was assessed by the Kidney Disease Quality of Life version 1.2 (KDQOL-SF) at baseline and at the end of the study. All dialyzed patients received individualized consultations with a trained dietitian. The content of the nutritional education program included a personalized meal plan and educational materials addressing nutrition to manage fluids, electrolytes, and vitamin D. Results: a total of 75 patients were included. After the NIP, visceral proteins, phosphorous, potassium and vitamin D levels had improved significantly (p < 0.001). The percentage of well-nourished patients increased by 30 % (p < 0.001). At the end of the study, the well-nourished patients had significantly improved scores on the general summary areas of the KDQOL-SF, reduced worry concerning fluid and dietary restrictions (p < 0.001), and the survival rate was 12 months longer (p < 0.01). Conclusion: the results of this study suggest that personalized NIP contributed to improved nutritional status, QoL and survival in HD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Good knowledge of and attitudes toward hemodialysis and its complications might be expected to promote good practices and improve adherence. This study investigated, the knowledge, attitude, and practice of patients receiving hemodialysis regarding hemodialysis and its complications. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled patients with uremia who were receiving hemodialysis at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (China) between January 9, 2023, and January 16, 2023. A questionnaire was designed that included the following dimensions: demographic/clinical information, knowledge, attitude, and practice. Correlations between knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS The analysis included 493 patients (305 males, 61.87%). The average knowledge, attitude, and practice score was 19.33 ± 7.07 (possible range, 0-31), 28.77 ± 3.58 (possible range, 8-40), and 43.57 ± 6.53 (possible range, 11-55) points, respectively. A higher knowledge score was associated with younger age (P < 0.001), a higher education level (P < 0.001), and not living alone (P < 0.001), while a higher practice score was associated with a shorter history of hemodialysis (P < 0.001). There were positive correlations between the knowledge and practice scores (r = 0.220, P < 0.001) and between the attitude and practice scores (r = 0.453, P < 0.001), although the knowledge and attitude scores were not significantly correlated. CONCLUSIONS The results provide important insights into the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of patients with uremia in Nanjing (China) regarding hemodialysis and its complications. These findings may facilitate education programs to improve self-care practices in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis in Nanjing (China).

Abstract
Fluid-control adherence was important for hemodialysis (HD) patients, and while significant correlations between treatment adherence and illness perceptions have been found, there is limited research that explored the relationship between illness perceptions and fluid-control adherence. We sought to assess illness perceptions and fluid-control adherence and to explore the relationship between them among Chinese hemodialysis patients. A cross-sectional study of 253 Chinese HD patients was conducted. We recorded sociodemographic and disease characteristics, Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) responses, Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients Scale (FCHPS) scores and the interdialytic weight gain (IDWG). The total FCHPS score of hemodialysis patients was of a moderate level, and 45.85% hemodialysis patients' IDWG exceeded 3.0 kg. Regression analysis revealed that sex, academic level, marital status, treatment control dimension and causal (physical) factors of illness perceptions explained 12.7% variance in the total FCHPS score. Age, normalized whole-body urea clearance (Kt/V), dry weight (DW) residual urine volume (mL/24 h) and consequence dimension of illness perceptions explained 29.0% variance in IDWG. About mediating effect analysis, positive indirect effects on IDWG were found for identity, consequences and emotional representations through the attitude dimension of FCHPS, and negative indirect effects on IDWG were found for treatment control and illness coherence through the attitude dimension of FCHPS. The results demonstrated that some sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and illness perceptions were associated with fluid-control adherence, and the patient's attitude toward fluid control is an important mediator between illness perceptions and IDWG, implying that attitude can be a focus of intervention programs based on illness perceptions to improve Chinese HD patients' fluid-control adherence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This work aimed to shed light on the notorious debate over the role of an educational/cognitive/behavioral or psychological approach in the reduction of interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) in patients on chronic hemodialysis. METHODS Searches were run from 1975 to January 2022 on Medline, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. The search terms included "hemodialysis/haemodialysis" AND "adherence" AND ("fluid intake" OR "water intake") AND ("weight gain" OR "interdialytic weight gain" OR "IDWG") AND "patient-level interventions. Randomized controlled studies were eligible if they were in English, published in a peer-reviewed journal and regarded adults patients with on chronic hemodialysis for at least 6 months; compared educational/cognitive and/or counseling/behavioral or psychological interventions to no intervention on interdialytic weight gain. Outcome of interest was interdialytic weight gain. The review was registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews in Health and Social Care (PROSPERO, ID number CRD42022332401). RESULTS Eighteen studies (1759 patients) were included in the analysis. Compared to the untreated group, educational/cognitive and/or counseling/behavioral interventions significantly reduced interdialytic weight gain with a pooled mean difference of - 0.15 kg (95% CI - 0.26, 30-0.05; P = 0.004). On the other hand, psychological/affective interventions reduced interdialytic weight gain with a pooled mean difference of - 0.26 kg (95% CI - 0.48, - 0.04; P = 0.020). CONCLUSIONS Educational/cognitive, counseling/behavioral or psychological/affective interventions significantly reduced the interdialytic weight gain in patients on chronic hemodialysis, although such reduction did not appear to be clinically relevant on hard outcomes.

Abstract
Herein, we performed a meta-analysis evaluating the effects of treatment adherence enhancement programs on treatment adherence and secondary outcomes for hemodialysis patients. Twenty-five Korean and international articles published prior to 31 March 2022 were selected following the PRISMA and Cochrane Systematic Review guidelines. We calculated summary effect sizes, conducted homogeneity and heterogeneity testing, constructed a funnel plot, and performed Egger's regression test, Begg's test, trim-and-fill method, subgroup analyses, and univariate meta-regression. The overall effect of treatment adherence enhancement programs for hemodialysis patients was statistically significant (Hedges' g = 1.10, 95% CI: 0.77, 1.43). On performing subgroup analysis to determine the cause of effect size heterogeneity, statistically significant moderating effects were found for a range of input variables (Asian countries, study centers, sample size, study design, intervention types, number of sessions, quality assessment scores, funding, and evidence-based interventions). On univariate meta-regression, larger synthesized effect sizes were found for a range of study characteristics (Asian populations, single-center studies, studies with <70 participants, quasi-experimental studies, educational interventions, studies with >12 sessions, studies with quality assessment scores above the mean, unfunded studies, and non-theory-based interventions). Our results provide evidence-based information for enhancing program efficacy when designing treatment adherence enhancement programs for hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
Hemodialysis (HD) is a life-sustaining therapy as well as an intermittent and repetitive stress condition for the patient. In ridding the blood of unwanted substances and excess fluid from the blood, the extracorporeal procedure simultaneously induces persistent physiological changes that adversely affect several organs. Dialysis patients experience this systemic stress condition usually thrice weekly and sometimes more frequently depending on the treatment schedule. Dialysis-induced systemic stress results from multifactorial components that include treatment schedule (i.e. modality, treatment time), hemodynamic management (i.e. ultrafiltration, weight loss), intensity of solute fluxes, osmotic and electrolytic shifts and interaction of blood with components of the extracorporeal circuit. Intradialytic morbidity (i.e. hypovolemia, intradialytic hypotension, hypoxia) is the clinical expression of this systemic stress that may act as a disease modifier, resulting in multiorgan injury and long-term morbidity. Thus, while lifesaving, HD exposes the patient to several systemic stressors, both hemodynamic and non-hemodynamic in origin. In addition, a combination of cardiocirculatory stress, greatly conditioned by the switch from hypervolemia to hypovolemia, hypoxemia and electrolyte changes may create pro-arrhythmogenic conditions. Moreover, contact of blood with components of the extracorporeal circuit directly activate circulating cells (i.e. macrophages-monocytes or platelets) and protein systems (i.e. coagulation, complement, contact phase kallikrein-kinin system), leading to induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and resulting in chronic low-grade inflammation, further contributing to poor outcomes. The multifactorial, repetitive HD-induced stress that globally reduces tissue perfusion and oxygenation could have deleterious long-term consequences on the functionality of vital organs such as heart, brain, liver and kidney. In this article, we summarize the multisystemic pathophysiological consequences of the main circulatory stress factors. Strategies to mitigate their effects to provide more cardioprotective and personalized dialytic therapies are proposed to reduce the systemic burden of HD.

Abstract
Adherence to fluid-restriction is a clinical priority in nephrology care. This study examines the effects of a combination of auricular acupressure (AA) and a fluid-restriction adherence program on the salivary flow rate, xerostomia, fluid control, interdialytic weight gain (IDWG), and diet-related quality of life (DQOL) among hemodialysis patients in South Korea. Using a quasi-experimental design, 84 hemodialysis patients were assigned to the experimental group (AA + fluid-restriction adherence program; n = 29), the comparison group (fluid-restriction adherence program; n = 27), and the control group (usual care; n = 28). The program lasted 6 weeks, and data were collected at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and 4 months post-intervention. There was a significant interaction between group and time for salivary flow rate, fluid control, IDWG, and DQOL (all p < 0.005). Compared with the control group, the experimental group had a significantly improved salivary flow rate, fluid control, IDWG, and DQOL at weeks 6 and 22, whereas the comparison group had improved fluid control and DQOL at week 6. The combination of AA and a fluid-restriction adherence program could be provided to hemodialysis patients as cost-effective, safe, and complementary interventions to promote sustainable patient adherence to fluid-restriction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adherence to fluid intake, diet, and drug management is very important in hemodialysis patients. Educational and self-management interventions are frequently used to improve adherence to treatment in hemodialysis patients. OBJECTIVES To synthesize a comparison of the effect of educational and self-management interventions on adherence to treatment in hemodialysis patients in randomized controlled trials. METHODS Systematic searches were conducted using 11 multidisciplinary databases in June 2020. The PRISMA checklist was used. The subgroup analysis was used to compare the effect of educational and self-management interventions on adherence to fluid intake, diet, and drug management. RESULTS In the included studies, educational interventions were performed ranging from 15 to 60 minutes, in 1-72 sessions. Self-management interventions were performed ranging from 10 to 120 minutes, in 1-84 sessions. The overall effect of educational interventions was small on adherence to fluid intake (P = .019, Hedges' g = -0.39), diet in serum phosphorus level (P = .001, Hedges' g = -0.35), drug management (P = .002, Hedges' g = -0.44), and not significant on adherence to diet in serum potassium level (P = .181). The overall effect of self-management interventions was small on adherence to fluid intake (P = .001, Hedges' g = -0.19) and diet in serum phosphorus level (P < .001, Hedges' g = -0.42). Additionally, the overall effect of self-management interventions was moderate on adherence to diet in serum potassium level (P = .002, Hedges' g = -0.75) and drug management (P < .001, Hedges' g = -0.55). There was no difference between the educational and self-management interventions on adherence to fluid intake, diet, and drug management (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS The analysis shows that educational and self-management interventions had a beneficial effect on adherence to fluid intake, diet, and drug management and no difference between these interventions. Therefore, these interventions can be used by healthcare professionals. It is also recommended that these interventions be well defined and transferable to routine clinical practice.

Abstract
Background: Hemodialysis patients require self-care training to manage their problems. To understand the effectiveness of different educational methods, it is necessary to evaluate these methods using knowledge, attitude, and practice assessment tool. Objectives: The current study aimed to compare the effects of group discussion and teach-back self-care education on the knowledge, attitude, and performance of hemodialysis patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental study is conducted on 67 patients who were undergoing hemodialysis via fistula for at least 6 months. Using the convenient sampling method, the patients were randomly allocated into two groups: teach-back training (n = 34), and group discussion (n = 33). Both groups were provided with three sessions of self-care training on nutrition, activity, and fistula care by the researcher. Considering the teaching materials, patients in the teach-back group were taught individually to ensure complete comprehension of the information. On the other hand, subjects in the group discussion were exposed to the teaching materials in the form of group training. Data were collected before and one month after providing the training sessions. Results: In this study, the majority of patients in both groups were married men with an average age of 52 years. Following education, knowledge, attitude, and performance increased in both groups. However, the teach-back method (113.88 ± 4.13) had a higher impact on the attitude of patients than group discussion (110.48 ± 5.68) (P = 0.009). Conclusions: Teach-back education increased the knowledge, performance, and attitude of patients. It is, therefore, recommended to use this method for patients with negative attitudes toward treatment and disease.

Abstract
This review aims to highlight the strengths and weaknesses emerging from diagnostic evaluations and prescriptions in an intent to prevent progression over time of malnutrition and/or protein-energy wasting (PEW) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. In particular, indications of the most effective pathway to follow in diagnosing a state of malnutrition are provided based on a range of appropriate chemical-clinical, anthropometric and instrumental analyses and monitoring of the nutritional status of HD patients. Finally, based on the findings of recent studies, therapeutic options to be adopted for the purpose of preventing or slowing down malnutrition have been reviewed, with particular focus on protein-calorie intake, the role of oral and/or intravenous supplements and efficacy of some classes of amino acids. A new determining factor that may lead inexorably to PEW in hemodialysis patients is represented by severe amino acid loss during hemodialysis sessions, for which mandatory compensation should be introduced.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the perceptions, barriers, and facilitators of patient education and factors influencing the performance of patient education among hemodialysis unit nurses. METHODS This study used a descriptive correlational design in which a total of 262 nurses from 27 hemodialysis facilities in six provinces in the Republic of Korea participated. Self-administered questionnaires were used to identify the perceptions, barriers, facilitators, and performance of patient education. Data were analyzed using a t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS Factors influencing patient education performance were nurses' total clinical experience, perceptions, working experience in a hemodialysis unit, facilitators, number of nurses in the hemodialysis unit, and barriers. These variables accounted for 37.2 % of the variance in the final model. CONCLUSION Nurses' performance in patient education was significantly influenced by perceptions, facilitators, and barriers. Nurses' total clinical experience, working experience in a hemodialysis unit, and number of nurses in the unit also influenced patient education performance. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS A nurse training program should be developed to reinforce nurses' patient education competency.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the time in therapeutic range (TTR) for dialysis patients on warfarin, and improve TTR with dietary review and intervention of interacting foods. We identified 151 patients undergoing hemodialysis in two units who were being treated with warfarin from January 1, 2010, through February 1, 2018, who were included in the overall TTR study. Of these, 15 patients were available to undergo the dietary intervention. International normalized ratio values were collected retrospectively for all eligible hemodialysis patients, and TTR was calculated for each period in which the patient was on hemodialysis. Patients who were available and agreed to the intervention underwent targeted dietician review of interacting foods, and their TTR post-treatment was calculated. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) TTR was 44 (IQR, 29 to 53) % among the 151 patients. Among the 15 patients who underwent the intervention, median (IQR) TTR was 52 (IQR, 32 to 56) pre-intervention and 51 (IQR, 38 to 69) post-intervention (P=0.53). TTR for dialysis patients is low in this overall cohort despite patients being seen at an integrated health care system. Focused improvement projects such as dietary review of interacting foods may help increase a patient's TTR.

Abstract
Patient experience is an integral aspect of the care we deliver to our dialysis patients. Standardized evaluation of patient experience with in-center hemodialysis started in the United States in 2012 with the In-Center Hemodialysis Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (ICH CAHPS) survey. Over time there have been a few changes to this survey, how it is administered, and how it fits within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services End-Stage Renal Disease Quality Incentive Program. Although the importance of this survey has been growing, knowledge of this survey among nephrologists has lagged. We provide a review of the survey development and how its use has evolved since 2012. We discuss in detail research done on this survey to date, including survey psychometric evaluation. We highlight gaps in our knowledge that need further research and end with general recommendations to improve patient experience within hemodialysis facilities, which we believe is a worthy goal for all members of the dialysis team.
