Acetic Acid: An Underestimated Metabolite in Ethanol-Induced Changes in Regulating Cardiovascular Function

Acetic acid is a bioactive short-chain fatty acid produced in large quantities from ethanol metabolism. In this review, we describe how acetic acid/acetate generates oxidative stress, alters the function of pre-sympathetic neurons, and can potentially influence cardiovascular function in both humans and rodents after ethanol consumption. Our recent findings from in vivo and in vitro studies support the notion that administration of acetic acid/acetate generates oxidative stress and increases sympathetic outflow, leading to alterations in arterial blood pressure. Real-time investigation of how ethanol and acetic acid/acetate modulate neural control of cardiovascular function can be conducted by microinjecting compounds into autonomic control centers of the brain and measuring changes in peripheral sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure in response to these compounds.

Research methods assessing sodium hypochlorite cytotoxicity: A scoping review

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) cytotoxicity has been assessed using different methodologies, which has led to arbitrary interpretations. This scoping review aimed to discuss the different methodological protocols for assessing NaOCl cytotoxicity. A literature review performed in the PubMed and Embase databases up to July 2023 identified manuscripts reporting NaOCl cytotoxicity. The dataset identified 546 publications, further screened by 2 reviewers. Ninety studies were identified and mined methodologically to collect information on cell type, cytotoxicity assay, NaOCl dilution solutions, presence of fetal bovine serum (FBS), and NaOCl exposure time. The culture medium used in cytotoxicity assays contains buffering substances that neutralize the pH of NaOCl, thus reducing its cytotoxicity, an approach that may lead to bias when solutions with different pH are compared. For short exposure periods, as in simulations to evaluate the contact between irrigant and periapical tissue cells during chemo-mechanical preparation, NaOCl dilution should be performed with saline, which does not buffer the irrigant. For long exposure periods, as in simulations of irrigant extrusions, NaOCl should be diluted in the culture medium, to reproduce the expected buffering effect occurring in extrusions. The presence of FBS in culture medium can decrease NaOCl toxicity. There is no standardization of NaOCl cytotoxicity methodologies. This poses the risk of arriving at incorrect results and, therefore, pertinent tests must be refined.

Calcium hypochlorite cytotoxicity mechanism in fibroblasts and effect on osteoblast mineralization

AIM

To determine the cytotoxicity mechanism of 2.5% calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2 ] in L929 fibroblasts and the effect of this solution on human osteoblast-like cells (Saos-2) mineralization, compared to that of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl).

METHODOLOGY

L929 fibroblasts were exposed to Ca(OCl)2 and NaOCl at different dilutions for 10 min. Cell metabolism was assessed by methyl-thiazole-tetrazolium (MTT); lysosome integrity, by neutral red (NR) assay; type of cell death, by flow cytometry (apoptosis/necrosis); cytoskeleton, by actin and α-tubulin fluorescence and cell ultrastructure, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mineralized nodule formation were determined in Saos-2 by thymolphthalein release and alizarin red staining (ARS), respectively. The data were analysed by two-way anova and Bonferroni's post-test (α = .05).

RESULTS

Ca(OCl)2 promoted higher cell viability and a lower percentage of apoptosis and necrosis than NaOCl (p < .05). Ca(OCl)2 and NaOCl decreased cell metabolism and lysosome integrity, induced the breakdown of microtubules and actin filaments, promoted alterations of rough endoplasmic reticulum and disruption of mitochondrial cristae. Additionally, Ca(OCl)2 did not induce ALP activity and had no effect on mineralized nodules formation.

CONCLUSIONS

Although Ca(OCl)2 and NaOCl promoted the same cytotoxicity mechanism, Ca(OCl)2 was less cytotoxic than NaOCl. As for ALP activity, no differences were observed between NaOCl and Ca(OCl)2 . The production of mineralized nodules induced by Ca(OCl)2 was lower than those induced by NaOCl, but was not different from those induced by the control group.

Comparative efficacy evaluation of disinfectants against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2

BACKGROUND

Disinfection is one of the most effective ways to block the rapid transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Due to the prolonged coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, disinfectants have become crucial to prevent person-to-person transmission and decontaminate hands, clothes, facilities and equipment. However, there is a lack of accurate information on the virucidal activity of commercial disinfectants.

AIM

To evaluate the virucidal efficacy of 72 commercially available disinfectants constituting 16 types of ingredients against SARS-CoV-2.

METHODS

SARS-CoV-2 was tested with various concentrations of disinfectants at indicated exposure time points as recommended by the manufacturers. The 50% tissue culture infectious dose assay was used to calculate virus titre, and trypan blue staining and CCK-8 were used to assess cell viability after 3-5 days of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

FINDINGS

This study found that disinfectants based on 83% ethanol, 60% propanol/ethanol, 0.00108-0.0011% sodium dichloroisocyanurate and 0.497% potassium peroxymonosulfate inactivated SARS-CoV-2 effectively and safely. Although disinfectants based on 0.05-0.4% benzalkonium chloride (BAC), 0.02-0.07% quaternary ammonium compound (QAC; 1:1), 0.4% BAC/didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), 0.28% benzethonium chloride concentrate/2-propanol, 0.0205-0.14% DDAC/polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) and 0.5% hydrogen peroxide inactivated SARS-CoV-2 effectively, they exhibited cytotoxicity. Conversely, disinfectants based on 0.04-4% QAC (2:3), 0.00625% BAC/DDAC/PHMB, and 0.0205-0.14% and 0.0173% peracetic acid showed approximately 50% virucidal efficacy with no cytotoxicity. Citric acid (0.4%) did not inactivate SARS-CoV-2.

CONCLUSION

These results indicate that most commercially available disinfectants exert a disinfectant effect against SARS-CoV-2. However, re-evaluation of the effective concentration and exposure time of certain disinfectants is needed, especially citric acid and peracetic acid.

Comparative analysis of peracetic acid (PAA) and permaleic acid (PMA) in disinfection processes

The growing demand to reduce chlorine usage and control disinfection byproducts increased the development of new strategies in wastewater treatments. Organic peracids are increasingly attracting interest in disinfection activities as a promising alternative to chlorine and chlorine-based agents. In this study, we assessed the antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of a new organic peracid, permaleic acid (PMA) compared with the reference peracetic acid (PAA). Disinfectant properties were evaluated by i) disk diffusion agar, ii) broth microdilution, iii) antibiofilm properties. PMA demonstrated a 10- and 5-fold decrease in the microbial inhibitory concentration (MIC) value against E. coli and S. aureus respectively, compared to PAA. Results showed greater efficacy of PMA regarding wastewater (WW) and treated wastewater (TWW) disinfection at low concentrations. Furthermore, the biofilm degradation ability was only observed following PMA treatment, for both strains. Bacterial regrowth from biofilm matrix after PAA and PMA disinfection, in the absence and presence of organic matter, was evaluated. PMA was more efficient than PAA to prevent the regrowth of planktonic cells of S. aureus and E. coli. After PAA and PMA treatment, in the presence of organic matter, the bacterial regrowth inhibition was maintained up to 10 and 5 g/L, respectively. Based on these results, PMA could be used as a valid alternative to the currently used disinfection methods.

Evaluation of Low-Temperature Sterilization using Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Containing Peracetic Acid

In low-temperature sterilization for the medical field, hydrogen peroxide sterilization is widely used for its safety. However, its low penetrability and residual amount of sterilant are major concerns. Recently, the combination of hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid has been found to enforce sporicidal effect, with low concentration in hydrogen peroxide. The application of this finding in medical sterilization is still very limited. To elucidate the combination effect, we compare peracetic acid containing hydrogen peroxide gas sterilizer and conventional hydrogen peroxide gas (plasma) sterilizers. The sterilant penetrability was examined in hollow load process challenge devices with inner diameters of 1 and 2 mm and lengths of 1, 2, and 3 m. As a result, peracetic acid containing hydrogen peroxide gas sterilizer demonstrated total inactivation with all diameters and lengths and achieved the highest sterilant penetrability in this study. The amount of residual sterilant on the surface of the sterilized object was 4.2 μg/cm², which corresponds to half amount of those of conventional hydrogen peroxide gas sterilizers. These results suggest that the addition of peracetic acid to hydrogen peroxide gas sterilizer can enhance sterilization efficiency and safety.

Effect of post-space irrigation with acid solutions on bond strength and dentin penetrability using a self-adhesive cementation system

Background

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface treatments with 1% peracetic acid (PA), solution containing 17% EDTA (SmearClear, Kerr Endodontics), solution containing a combination of 17% EDTA with 2% chlorhexidine (QMix, Dentsply Sirona) on the post-space root dentin compared to 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on bond strength and resin tags length in dentin.

Material and Methods

Forty human-canine roots were endodontically treated and the post space was prepared. The specimens were randomised into four groups (n = 10): control – irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl solution, PA – irrigation with 1% PA, SmearClear – irrigation with SmearClear solution, and QMix – irrigation with QMix solution. The fibre posts were cemented using a self-adhesive resin system (Relyx U200, 3M ESPE). After six months, the specimens were cross-sectioned and subjected to push-out and confocal laser microscopy tests. One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests were used to analyse the data (α= 0.05).

Results

PA and QMix presented the highest bond strength values compared to the other groups (p< 0.05). There was no significant difference between the resin tags length in dentin by the groups (p = 0.75).

Conclusions

Irrigation of the post space with 1% PA and QMix showed a positive clinical impact on the adhesion between the fiber post and root dentin. However, these materials had no influence on resin tags length in dentin by self-adhesive resin cement.

Final Endodontic Irrigation with 2% Peracetic Acid: Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxicity

OBJECTIVE

 The aim of present study was to assess the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial efficacy of 2% peracetic acid (PAA) compared with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 2% chlorhexidine (CHX).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

 For the cytotoxicity test, 100 µl of the tested solutions were added in 12 wells with ECV 304 endothelial cells in each group: NaOCl, CHX, and PAA, in addition to the control group. Each solution was evaluated after 24 hours of contact in four dilutions: 0.2, 0.1, 0.05 and 0.025 through mitochondrial function using MTT colorimetric assay. In the antimicrobial evaluation, 40 dentin blocks 5 mm in length and 0.2 g in weight were incubated with 400 µl of Enterococcus faecalis suspension for 21 days at 37°C. The contaminated samples were divided into three experimental groups within 5 minutes of contact: NaOCl group, CHX group, PAA group, as well as the positive control group. The specimens received treatment and were transferred to a tube with saline for serial dilution of the solution and seeding for isolation and colony forming unit (CFU) count.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 The results obtained were expressed as mean (A570 nm) ± standard deviation (SD) and in a multiple linear regression model and multiple comparisons conducted.

RESULTS

 The antimicrobial evaluation revealed that the NaOCl and CHX groups showed a statistically significant difference compared with the control group (p < 0.001), while the PAA reduced only the CFU growth. It can be concluded that, among the agents tested, PAA expressed greater cell viability, followed by CHX and NaOCl. However, it did not show greater antimicrobial activity in vitro in the mature biofilm of Enterococcus faecalis.

Physicochemical properties, cytotoxicity and penetration into dentinal tubules of sodium hypochlorite with and without surfactants

Objectives

The aim of this study was to assess the physicochemical properties, cytotoxicity and penetration into dentinal tubules of ChlorCid™ Surf (3% sodium hypochlorite [NaOCl] with surfactant) in comparison to ChlorCid™ (3% NaOCl without surfactant).

Materials and Methods

The physicochemical properties evaluated were pH, surface tension, free available chlorine (FAC) and contact angle. Cytotoxicity was evaluated in L929 fibroblasts exposed to the solutions by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and neutral red assays. Assessment of penetration into dentinal tubules was performed by staining single-rooted permanent human teeth with crystal violet (n = 9), which were irrigated with the solutions and analyzed in cervical, middle and apical segments. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-test, 2-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post-test or t-test (α = 0.05).

Results

ChlorCid™ Surf and ChlorCid™ FAC values were close to those indicated by the manufacturer. ChlorCid™ Surf showed lower surface tension and contact angle on dentin, and higher pH than ChlorCid™ (p < 0.05). The penetration of ChlorCid™ Surf was higher in cervical and middle segments, compared with ChlorCid™ (p < 0.05). There was no difference in irrigant cytotoxicity (p > 0.05).

Conclusions

ChlorCid™ Surf showed lower surface tension, lower contact angle on root canal dentin, higher penetration into dentinal tubules and more alkaline pH, compared with ChlorCid™. However, both solutions showed similar cytotoxicity and FAC content.

Effects of octenidine applied alone or mixed with sodium hypochlorite on eukaryotic cells

AIM

To assess the effects of octenidine dihydrochloride (OCT) on eukaryotic cells and the cytotoxicity of OCT associated with sodium hypochlorite - NaOCl (NaOCl/OCT).

METHODOLOGY

L929 fibroblasts and human osteoblast-like cells (Saos-2) were exposed to 0.1% OCT, 2% CHX, 2.5% NaOCl, 5.25% NaOCl and mixtures of 5.25% NaOCl and 0.1% OCT (NaOCl/OCT) at 90 : 10, 80 : 20 and 50 : 50 ratios. Cell viability was assessed by methyl-thiazol-tetrazolium (MTT) and neutral red (NR) assays; type of cell death, by flow cytometry; cytoskeleton, by actin and α-tubulin fluorescence; and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, by thymolphthalein release. The data were analysed by two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

MTT and NR assays revealed that 0.1% OCT had the lowest cytotoxicity (P < 0.05), followed by 2% CHX (P < 0.05). The 2.5% NaOCl, NaOCl/OCT 80 : 20 and NaOCl/OCT 50 : 50 solutions had intermediate cytotoxicity. NaOCl 5.25% and NaOCl/OCT 90 : 10 had the highest cytotoxicity (P < 0.05). The OCT group had a higher percentage of viable cells than the NaOCl and CHX groups (P < 0.05), and induced apoptosis at higher doses. The cytoskeleton alterations were observed at 0.12%, 0.6% and 2.02% for the NaOCl, CHX and OCT groups, respectively. The solutions did not induce ALP activity.

CONCLUSION

Octenidine dihydrochloride was less cytotoxic, induced apoptosis at higher doses, caused few changes in the cytoskeleton and did not induce alkaline phosphatase activity. In addition, octenidine dihydrochloride reduced the cytotoxicity of 5.25% NaOCl when combined at 20 and 50%.

Evaluation by Flow Cytometry of Escherichia coli Viability in Lettuce after Disinfection

Foodborne outbreaks due to the consumption of ready-to-eat vegetables have increased worldwide, with Escherichia coli (E. coli) being one of the main sources responsible. Viable but nonculturable bacteria (VBNC) retain virulence even after some disinfection procedures and constitute a huge problem to public health due to their non-detectability through conventional microbiological techniques. Flow cytometry (FCM) is a promising tool in food microbiology as it enables the distinction of the different physiological states of bacteria after disinfection procedures within a short time. In this study, samples of lettuce inoculated with E. coli were subject to disinfection with sodium hypochlorite at free chlorine concentrations of 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 mg·L⁻¹ or with 35% peracetic acid at concentrations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg·L⁻¹. The efficiency of these disinfectants on the viability of E. coli in lettuce was evaluated by flow cytometry with LIVE/DEAD stains. Results from this study suggest that FCM can effectively monitor cell viability. However, peracetic acid is more effective than sodium hypochlorite as, at half the concentration, it is enough to kill 100% of bacteria and always induces a lower percentage of VBNC. Finally, we can conclude that the recommended levels of chemical disinfectants for fresh fruit and vegetables are adequate when applied in lettuce. More importantly, it is possible to ensure that all cells of E. coli are dead and that there are no VBNC cells even with lower concentrations of those chemicals. These results can serve as guidance for lettuce disinfection, improving quality and the safety of consumption.

Higher functionality of bacterial plasmid DNA in water after peracetic acid disinfection compared with chlorination

Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging disinfectant with a low disinfection by-product formation potential, but how PAA destroys gene function after killing bacteria remains to be studied. Bacterial plasmid DNA is a mobile genetic element that often harbors undesirable genes encoding antibiotic resistance and virulence factors. Even though PAA efficiently kills bacteria, bacterial plasmids and other mobile genetic elements might still be intact and functional after PAA disinfection, posing potential public health and environmental risks. This study evaluated the impact of PAA disinfection on the functionality of plasmid DNA in vivo and compared the results with those from chlorination. We delivered a plasmid DNA harboring two antibiotic resistance genes to Escherichia coli TOP10 to form an antibiotic-resistant bacterium (ARB). The planktonic ARB was treated with PAA and chlorine to find the minimum doses inhibiting the regrowth of the strain. PAA and chlorine stopped the regrowth at 8 ± 1 mg PAA·L^-1 and 20 ± 9 mg Cl₂·L^-1, respectively. The functionality of the plasmid DNA after PAA and chlorine disinfection was then determined at higher doses in vivo. Neither PAA nor chlorine completely destroyed the plasmid DNA. However, chlorine was more efficient than PAA in eliminating the plasmid DNA. PAA at 25 mg PAA·L^-1 reduced the transforming activity of the plasmid DNA by less than 0.3 log₁₀ units, whereas chlorine at 25 mg Cl₂·L^-1 reduced the transforming activity by approximately 1.7 log₁₀ units. Chlorine had a more pronounced impact on the functionality of the plasmid DNA because it oxidizes or destroys bacterial components including plasmid DNA faster than PAA. In addition, environmental scanning electron microscopy shows that chlorination desiccated the cells resulting in the flat cellular structure and possibly more complete loss of plasmid DNA, whereas PAA disinfection had a less impact on cell structure and morphology. This study demonstrates that more plasmid DNA remains functional in water after PAA disinfection than after chlorination. These functional genetic elements could be acquired by other microorganisms via horizontal gene transfer to pose potential public health and environmental risks.

Effect of peracetic acid used as single irrigant on the smear layer, adhesion, and penetrability of AH Plus

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of peracetic acid (PAA) as a single irrigant on the smear layer, on the intraradicular dentinal bond strength, and on the penetrability of an epoxy-based resin sealer into the dentinal tubules. A total of 120 roots were distributed into 4 groups according to the irrigant used in root canal preparation: 1% PAA (PAA); 2.5% NaOCl followed by final irrigation with 17% EDTA and 2.5% NaOCl (NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl); 2.5% NaOCl (NaOCl); and saline solution (SS). The smear layer was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The bond strength of an epoxy-based resin sealer (AH Plus) to root dentin was evaluated by the push-out test and penetrability of the sealer into dentinal tubules was observed by confocal laser microscopy. The results were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and the Dunn post-test (α = 0.05). The use of 1% PAA as single root canal irrigant provided smear layer removal and improved the penetrability and bond strength of AH Plus to root dentin in a manner similar to that of the NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl group (p > 0.05). The NaOCl and SS groups had higher values of smear layer and lower values of sealer penetrability and dentin bond strength than the PAA and NaOCl-EDTA-NaOCl groups (p < 0.05). Thus, 1% PAA has the potential to be used as a single irrigant in root canals.

Effect of different chelating agents on dentinal crack formation

The present study aimed to evaluate the degree of crack formation during canal preparation using reciprocating files. A total of 120 incisor teeth were divided into eight groups according to irrigation protocol (n = 15). The irrigation solution and chelating agents included distilled water, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), citric acid, maleic acid, peracetic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) gel, and EDTA liquid. The root canals were prepared using reciprocating instruments while one of the agents was present within the root canals. A control group was subjected to neither preparation nor irrigation. The roots were horizontally sectioned 3, 6, and 9 mm away from the apices. The numbers of cracks were recorded. Statistical analyses were performed using a chi-squared test. The chelating agents resulted in similar numbers of cracked sections. The use of one of the chelating agents during preparation using reciprocating instruments appears to be beneficial in reducing crack formation.

Effects of Calcium Hypochlorite and Octenidine Hydrochloride on L929 And Human Periodontal Ligament Cells

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess cytotoxicity and cell migration of calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2] and octenidine hydrochloride - OCT (Octenisept®, Schülke & Mayr, Norderstedt, Germany) in L929 and human periodontal ligament (hPDL) cells. The cells were exposed to different doses of different solutions: 2.5% and 5% Ca(OCl)2, 0.1% OCT, 2.5% NaOCl and 2% CHX for 10 min. Cell viability was assessed by methyl-thiazol-tetrazolium (MTT) and neutral red (NR) assays, and cell migration was determined by wound-healing assay. Statistical analysis was performed by two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests (α=0.05). The MTT and NR assays revealed that 0.1% OCT was less cytotoxic in hPDL cells (p<0.05), followed by 2% CHX and 2.5% Ca(OCl)2 (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between 2.5% NaOCl and 5% Ca(OCl)2 (p>0.05), but these solutions showed greater cytotoxicity than the others. The result was the same for L929 cells, except that there was no significant difference between 2% CHX and 2.5% Ca(OCl)2 (p>0.05). Wound-healing assay in L929 and hPDL cells showed that cell migration of 0.1% OCT, 2% CHX and 2.5% Ca(OCl)2 groups was higher than 5% Ca(OCl)2 and 2.5% NaOCl groups at 24 h (p<0.05). In conclusion, 0.1% OCT had lower cytotoxicity in tested cell lines than CHX, Ca(OCl)2 and NaOCl. Cell migration was higher for 0.1% OCT, 2% CHX and 2.5% Ca(OCl)2. Therefore, in terms of cytotoxicity, OCT and Ca(OCl)2 have the potential to be used as root canal irrigants.

Inhibition of regrowth of planktonic and biofilm bacteria after peracetic acid disinfection

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a promising alternative to chlorine for disinfection; however, bacterial regrowth after PAA disinfection is poorly understood. This study compared the regrowth of bacteria (Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and Gram-positive Bacillus sp.) after disinfection with PAA or free chlorine. In the absence of organic matter, PAA and free chlorine prevented the regrowth of planktonic cells of P. aeruginosa PAO1 at C·t (= disinfectant concentration × contact time) doses of (28.5 ± 9.8) mg PAA·min·L^-1 and (22.5 ± 10.6) mg Cl₂·min·L^-1, respectively, suggesting that they had comparable efficiencies in preventing the regrowth of planktonic bacteria. For comparison, the minimum C·t doses of PAA and free chlorine to prevent the regrowth of P. aeruginosa PAO1 biofilm cells in the absence of organic matter were (14,000 ± 1,732) mg PAA·min·L^-1 and (6,500 ± 2,291) mg Cl₂·min·L^-1, respectively. PAA was less effective than free chlorine in killing bacteria within biofilms in the absence of organic matter most likely because PAA reacts with biofilm matrix constituents slower than free chlorine. In the presence of organic matter, although the bactericidal efficiencies of both disinfectants significantly decreased, PAA was less affected due to its slower reaction with organic matter and/or slower self-decomposition. For instance, in a dilute Lysogeny broth-Miller, the minimum concentrations of PAA and free chlorine to prevent the regrowth of planktonic P. aeruginosa PAO1 were 20 mg PAA·L^-1 and 300 mg Cl₂·L^-1, respectively. While both disinfectants are strong oxidants disrupting cell membrane, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) revealed that PAA made holes in the center of the cells, whereas free chlorine desiccated the cells. Overall, this study shows that PAA is a powerful disinfectant to prevent bacterial regrowth even in the presence of organic matter.
