Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the accumulation of cerium-nitrate and samarium-nitrate on dentin without or with smear-layer and to test their antibacterial activity. DESIGN 24 dentin-enamel slices were cut from 24 extracted molars. 12 slices underwent smear-layer creation (320 grit, 200 g, 5 s), the other 12 smear-layer removal (20 % EDTA, 300 s). Slices were halved to 48 semilunar-shaped specimens. One specimen per tooth was treated with either Ce(NO3)3 (50 wt% aqueous solution; pH = 1.29; n = 6) or Sm(NO3)3 (50 wt% aqueous solution; pH = 1.88; n = 6). The other specimen served as control (A. demin). After water rinsing, elemental composition (Ce, Sm, Ca, P, O, N, Na, Mg, C) was measured (EDX; EDAX Octane-Elect, APEX v2.5, low-vacuum) in dentin. Atomic percent (At%), Ca/P- and Ca/N-ratios were calculated and analyzed non-parametrically (α = 0.05, error rates method). Additionally, antibacterial activity (2 min exposure) of Ce(NO3)3 and Sm(NO3)3 against Streptococcus mutans, Actinomyces naeslundii, Schaalia odontolytica, and Enterococcus faecalis was determined (colony forming units) after anaerobic incubation at 37 °C for 24 h (control: 0.2 % CHX). RESULTS At% (median) of Ce and Sm were as follows: Ce(NO3)3 3.4 and 0.9 At%Ce with and without smear-layer, respectively; Sm(NO3)3 2.4 and 1.3 At%Sm with and without smear-layer, respectively. Ce(NO3)3 and Sm(NO3)3-application significantly decreased Ca/P-ratios (1.22 - 1.45; p ≤ 0.02) compared to controls (1.47 - 1.63). With smear-layer, significantly higher Ca/N-ratios (5.1 - 29.3) could be detected across all groups (p ≤ 0.004) compared to specimens without smear-layer (0.37 - 0.48). Ce(NO3)3 and Sm(NO3)3 showed reduction rates of up to ≥ 5 log10 steps for S. mutans, A. naeslundii, and S. odontolytica. CONCLUSIONS Cerium and samarium nitrate showed accumulation on dentin and certain antibacterial activity and could therefore be identified as potential compounds to treat and prevent dentin and root caries and dentin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the chemical composition resulting from the chemical interaction between calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2] and chlorhexidine (CHX) using different 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR), correlated two-dimensional spectroscopy (2D COSY), heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments. The 5.25% Ca(OCl)2 was mixed with 2% CHX in a 1:1 ratio, obtaining an orange-brown precipitate that was filtered, washed in ultrapure water, dried and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, 2D COSY, HSQC and FTIR. One-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR spectra demonstrated the chemical changes around the protons and carbon atoms of the initial CHX and after reacted with Ca(OCl)2. These techniques and FTIR show that the interaction generated two by-products from the degradation of CHX, none of which were parachloroaniline (PCA) despite both products obtained being substituted benzene compounds. Using NMR and FTIR data together with a previously proposed catalytic cleavage degradation mechanism for CHX, the products appear to be parachlorophenylurea (PCU) and parachlorophenylguanidyl-1,6-diguanidyl-hexane (PCGH). Therefore, this in vitro study demonstrated that the precipitate formed from the chemical interaction between Ca(OCl)₂ and CHX results in two by-products, PCU and PCGH, neither of which is PCA. Due to the absence of cytotoxicity studies on the products generated from the combination of Ca(OCl)₂ and CHX, an intermediate rinse with an inert solution is recommended to remove these compounds from the root canals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the mechanical properties of root canal dentin treated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in combination with hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). METHODS For testing fracture resistance, 45 single-rooted teeth were instrumented and irrigated with NaOCl/HEDP, NaOCl/EDTA, or distilled water. Fifteen untreated teeth served as control. After obturation, specimens from the experimental groups were thermocycled, dynamically-loaded, and then statically-loaded in a universal testing machine until failure. For flexural strength analysis, 15 teeth were instrumented and irrigated with NaOCl/HEDP or NaOCl/EDTA. Root segments were sectioned into dentin bars and tested for flexural strength using a universal testing machine. For microhardness evaluation, 20 teeth were instrumented and irrigated with NaOCl/HEDP or NaOCl/EDTA. Dentin disks from the coronal-third of each root segment were prepared, one before and one after irrigation, for microhardness testing with a Knoop hardness tester. RESULTS The highest fracture resistance was recorded in the untreated group, and the lowest in the EDTA group. Although the HEDP group had higher fracture resistance than the EDTA group, the distilled water group demonstrated even greater fracture resistance than the HEDP group. Specimens treated with HEDP had significantly higher flexural strength and microhardness values when compared with those treated with EDTA. CONCLUSION The fracture resistance, flexural strength, and microhardness of root canal dentin were higher when root canals were irrigated with NaOCl/HEDP, when compared with NaOCl/EDTA. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Irrigating root canals with NaOCl combined with HEDP significantly improves the mechanical integrity of root canal dentin compared to the use of NaOCl with EDTA.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the dynamic recovery of biofilms within dentinal tubules after primary irrigation with different protocols, and to evaluate the efficacy of various re-irrigation protocols on recovered biofilm, considering factors such as smear layer, nutrient conditions, and primary irrigants. METHODOLOGY A total of 416 mono or multi-species biofilms samples were prepared from human teeth and incubated for 3 weeks. After inducing a smear layer on half of the samples, all specimens were irrigated with one of the following irrigant sequences: (1) 6% NaOCl +17% EDTA, (2) 6% NaOCl +8.5% EDTA, (3) 6% NaOCl and (8.5% EDTA +10 μg/mL DJK-5 antimicrobial peptide), or (4) sterile water. Thirty-two samples were used to assess immediate effect, whilst the rest were re-incubated to assess biofilms recovery. Nutrient conditions were defined based on whether culture media were changed (nutrient-rich) or not (nutrient-poor) during re-incubation. After 16 weeks, recovered biofilms underwent re-irrigation using four additional protocols, with or without DJK-5 peptide, based on primary irrigants. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was employed to evaluate immediate irrigant effects, biofilms recovery intervals (1, 3, 5, 8, 12, and 16 weeks after primary irrigation), and re-irrigation effects at the 16-week. Statistical analysis included one-way anova and two-way mixed anova tests. RESULTS The DJK-5 peptide irrigation protocols demonstrated the highest killing rates during primary irrigation and resulted in a longer biofilms recovery time of 16 weeks compared to non-peptide protocols (p < .001). Both primary irrigation type and smear layer presence significantly influenced biofilms recovery (p < .001). In the absence of smear layer, re-irrigation efficacy didn't significantly differ from primary irrigation, regardless of primary irrigation type or nutrient conditions. However, with a smear layer present, re-irrigation led to significantly higher proportion of dead bacteria compared to primary irrigation (p < .05). Inclusion of the DJK-5 peptide into the re-irrigation protocol displayed superior killing rate compared to other protocols (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Biofilms exhibited susceptibility to both peptide and non-peptide protocols during re-irrigation, irrespective of nutrient conditions or primary irrigation protocols. The DJK-5 peptide irrigation protocols consistently displayed superior effectiveness compared to non-peptide protocols.

Abstract
Purpose Chemical dissolution of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files involves the application of a fluoride solution in direct contact with a damaged instrument, whereas electrochemical dissolution involves the application of an electrical current to the electrolyte, which accelerates fragment dissolution. This study aimed to determine the hardness and concentration of calcium and phosphorus (Ca and P) ions in dentinal walls following chemical and electrochemical dissolution of fractured ProTaper F2 files with a novel chemical solution. Materials & Methods : Thirty human maxillary first molar palatal roots with fractured ProTaper F2 files in the middle third (length, 2.5 mm were divided into three groups according to the treatment techniques used with a novel solution (NaF 12 g/L + NaCl2 60 g/L + MgCl2 60 g/L + CaCl2 60 g/L) at pH 5: Group 1: distilled water (control group), Group 2: electrochemical dissolution, and Group 3: chemical dissolution using the novel solution. The novel solution was placed for 10 min using an electrochemical technique, and for 30 min in contact with the separated instrument in the chemical group. The Vickers microhardness test was performed in three areas: at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the apex, and an energy-dispersive X-ray test for both Ca and P ions was performed. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's tests were used for statistical analysis. Results According to the one-way ANOVA analysis, no difference was observed between the tested approaches (P > 0.05) in the three areas evaluated (3, 6, and 9 mm), with no difference in the Ca/P ratio between the tested groups. Conclusion Compared to the control group, the use of chemical and electrochemical dissolution methods with the novel solution did not affect dentin hardness or dentinal structure in terms of the Ca/P ratio, thereby indicating promising results while saving time.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of initial irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and final irrigation with QMix, 40% citric acid, and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) on smear layer removal and dentin erosion. METHODOLOGY Forty extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10) according to the type of final irrigants used: 17% EDTA, QMix, citric acid, and control (normal saline). Canals were mechanically prepared using ProTaper Next instruments to an apical size of X3. Subsequently, the roots were sectioned in a buccolingual direction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to assess the presence of the smear layer and the amount of dentin erosion in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the root canals. RESULTS In regards to smear layer removal, there was a significant difference between the control group and the other tested groups. Moreover, it was significantly higher in the coronal and middle thirds than in the apical third. However, there were no significant differences between the groups of EDTA, QMix, and citric acid. Concerning dentin erosion, citric acid produced significantly more dentin erosion than the other tested groups. CONCLUSION Final irrigation with solutions had a higher ability to remove the smear layer in the coronal and middle thirds compared to the apical third. Of all the solutions tested, 40% citric acid had the most pronounced impact on dentin erosion, followed by 17% EDTA and QMix.

Abstract
Guidelines were developed by the Australian Society of Endodontology Inc. with the intent to describe relevant aspects of contemporary evidence-based root canal treatment. The document aims to support clinicians by describing a Standard of Practice in the Australian context. The presented guidelines refer to Competence criteria and Quality standards for the main steps in root canal treatment. While the intent is not to replace individual clinical decision-making, it is envisaged that these periodically reviewable guidelines may help to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Background The smear layer has an adverse effect on the sealing of root canals during obturation, and it is the main reason for the failure of root canal treatment. Root canal irrigation using a conventional irrigation system is ineffective for smear layer removal, especially from the apical third region, where most lateral canals are present. For successful endodontic treatment, the smear layer should be removed from the apical third region using an effective irrigation activation system. Aim This study aimed to compare smear layer removal by conventional irrigation, XP Endo Finisher (XPF), endoactivator (EA), passive ultrasonic activation, and root canal brush using 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a chelating solution and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite after chemomechanical preparation, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Method A total of 50 extracted human mandibular single canal premolars with mature roots were selected for this study. Samples were decoronated to obtain a standard working length (WL) of 15 mm. Canal patency was achieved using a 10 k file. Samples were sealed with sticky wax to obtain the vapor lock effect. Biomechanical preparation is done till F3. The samples were divided into five groups according to the final irrigation activation protocol: Group 1, control group; group 2, XPF; group 3, EA; group 4, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI); and group 5,, root canal brush. Samples were divided into two equal halves longitudinally. Each sample was analyzed for a smear layer under SEM at 2000x magnification. Statistical analysis was done using the one-way Anova "F" test and Tukey's post-hoc test. Results Group 3 showed the least presence of a smear layer, followed by groups 4, 2, 5, and 1. All the groups exhibited highly significant differences between each other (p < 0.001). Group B shows no significant difference with groups C, D, and E. Group C shows no significant difference with groups D and E. Group D shows no significant difference with group E. Conclusion The EA removes the smear layer effectively as compared with other groups. All the irrigation activation system shows the presence of smear layer. No activation systems were able to remove the smear layer completely.

Abstract
CONTEXT The smear layer may harbor many bacteria; hence, alternative methods are used to disrupt and remove biofilm. AIM The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of EndoActivator, PATS Vario System, and XP-endo Finisher files on smear layer removal using a scanning electron microscope. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Sixty single-rooted extracted premolars with Vertucci Type 1 configuration were decoronated and divided into four groups. The groups were instrumented with the rotary ProTaper file system. All specimens were flushed with 1 ml of 3% sodium hypochlorite. Group 1 was irrigated with a conventional needle and syringe. In Group 2, the irrigant was activated with an EndoActivator. In Group 3, the irrigant was activated with PATS Vario system, and in Group 4, XP-endo Finisher files were used after biomechanical preparation to remove debris and smear layer. All specimens were finally rinsed with 3 ml of 3% sodium hypochlorite. The teeth underwent longitudinal splitting and grooving in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds, and then, the samples were taken for scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the amount of smear layer removal in each third. RESULTS The middle and coronal thirds Showed that almost similar efficacy to remove smear layer in both Group II and Group III. At the apical third, Group III showed comparatively better results than Group I, II, and IV, respectively. CONCLUSION Equal amount of smear layer was seen with EndoActivator and PATS Vario system when used as sonic irrigation devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the obturation ability of simulated lateral canal in mandibular premolars at three levels (3, 5, and 7 mm) from the apex using gutta-percha and BC Sealer HiFlow (BCHiF) with different obturation techniques, including continuous wave compaction (CWC), cold lateral condensation (CLC), and single cone (SC) techniques, by a 3D assessment method of the obturation volume with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and MIMICS software analysis. METHODS Thirty intact human mandibular premolars were decoronated, instrumented up to #30 taper 4%, and uniformly irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. Six simulated lateral canals (3 pairs) were prepared at 3, 5, and 7 mm from the apex in each root, using #10 modified C-file. CBCT images were obtained, and lateral canal volumes were calculated using MIMICS software. The samples were divided into three groups: CWC (n = 10), CLC (n = 10), and SC (n = 10). All groups were obturated with BCHiF and gutta-percha. Another CBCT image was taken post-obturation, and 3D lateral canal obturation volume percentages were calculated using MIMICS software. Data were analyzed using SPSS software with One-way ANOVA and Sidak tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences were observed in the 3D lateral canal obturation volume percentage at all three levels (P < 0.05). Both CWC and CLC techniques demonstrated higher 3D lateral canal obturation volume percentages (x ¯ = 89.64% andx ¯ = 73.28%; respectively) compared to the SC group)x ¯ = 43.10%). CONCLUSION BCHiF combined with the CWC technique has a higher ability to achieve preferable 3D obturation volume in the simulated lateral canal at 3, 5, and 7 mm. CLINICAL RELEVANCE In cases requiring endodontic treatment with lateral canals, the CWC obturation technique using BCHiF with gutta-percha may offer better outcomes compared to other obturation techniques.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of various chelating agents, ethilenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), citric acid (CA), and etidronic acid (HEDP) mixed in two different forms, in removing the smear layer and promoting the penetration of an endodontic sealer into the dentinal tubules of extracted single-rooted teeth. METHODS The study used 75 teeth divided into five groups: 17% EDTA, 10% CA, 9% HEDP + NaOCl, 9% HEDP + distilled water (DW), and a control (DW) group. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess smear layer removal and confocal laser microscopy was used to evaluate tubular sealer penetration at different depths from the apical tip. RESULTS Sealer penetration was highest with 17% EDTA and 10% CA as compared with the other agents (p<0.001). At the cervical third, the sealer penetration for EDTA, HEDP + NaOCl, and HEDP + DW groups were significantly different than those in DW (p = 0.020). For the middle third, EDTA, CA, and HEDP + NaOCl groups were significantly higher than those of the DW group (p<0.001). Cervical-level values were significantly higher than apical-level values for HEDP + NaOCl, HEDP + DW, and DW (p<0.001). Smear layer removal was lower with 9% HEDP + DW than with 17% EDTA and 10% CA at all depths (p<0.001). A significancy in smear layer removal was observed between 10% CA and control (p = 0.015) in middle depth. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, highest values were seen in EDTA and CA in terms of sealer penetration and smear layer removal. In the light of these findings, the use of strong chelating agents highlights better clinical efficiency than dual-rinse or single HEDP irrigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Currently, premixed putty-type bioceramic cements (PPBCs) have become popular materials for root-end fillings. This study investigated three root-end filling techniques using PPBCs and calcium silicate-based sealers including EDTA pretreatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety root segments were prepared and standardized with an artificial fin and lateral canal, and assigned to three groups (n = 30). Root-end fillings were placed using BC-RRM Putty alone (Group PA), injection of BC sealer followed by BC-RRM Putty (Lid Technique: Group LT) or BC-RRM Putty with BC sealer coating (Deep putty packing technique: Group DP). Half of each group was pretreated with 17% EDTA. The radiographic images of the specimens were assessed by five graders and push-out bond strength tests were conducted. The data were analyzed with a general linear model including two-way ANOVA and chi-square test at a significance level of 5%. RESULTS DP approach demonstrated significantly higher bond strength than LT (P < 0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in bond strength between PA and either DP or LT. EDTA pretreatment had no significant effect on push-out bond strength. Radiographically, for the main canal, PA and DP scored significantly higher than LT. In the fin, PA scored significantly higher than others (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our study highlights variations in root-end filling techniques. Injecting a bulk of bioceramic sealer before the placement of PPBCs may reduce bond strength and radiopacity. The application of PPBCs alone or in the deep putty technique demonstrates potential for favorable outcomes. EDTA pretreatment did not enhance bond-strength. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Careful selection and application of bioceramic materials and techniques in root-end fillings may influence the outcome of endodontic root-end surgery. When PPBCs and calcium silicate-based sealers are used together for root-end fillings, sealer followed by deep putty application may offer improved bond strength and radiographic fill compared to the lid technique.

Abstract
The morphological variations in roots and root canals vary greatly in multi-rooted teeth making it a challenge for accurate diagnosis and effective endodontic therapy. In addition to using technology appropriately, this article highlights how important it is to have a complete understanding of root canal morphology. With the assistance of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and a dental operating microscope (DOM), successful endodontic treatment was performed on a single-rooted maxillary first molar with Vertucci's type II canal configuration. CBCT and DOM proved to be valuable tools for the effective diagnosis and management of this atypical morphology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The adhesive strength of sealers to dentin is influenced by various factors, and the presence of a smear layer is among the critical variables. Chitosan, known for its dentin compatibility, has previously demonstrated a reduction in dentin change and resin sealer bond strength comparable to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) when used as an irrigant and final rinse. The study investigates the impact of chitosan, used as both a lubricating gel and final rinse, on the push-out bond strength of resin sealer. MATERIALS AND METHOD Forty single-rooted premolar teeth, each with a fully formed root and a single root canal, were collected post-extraction. During canal preparation, 1 ml sodium hypochlorite (3%) was used for irrigation at every change of instrument, followed by applying specific chelating gel and final rinse for each experimental group. The groups included: Group 1 (17% EDTA chelating gel, final rinse with saline), Group 2 (17% EDTA chelating gel, final rinse with 17% EDTA solution), Group 3 (chitosan chelating gel, final rinse with saline solution), and Group 4 (chitosan chelating gel, final rinse with 0.2% chitosan solution), 10 specimens in each group. After obturation, specimens were sealed and incubated for a week at 37°C with 100% humidity. The universal testing machine was used for push-out tests, and specimens were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to identify various types of bond failure. RESULTS Among the four groups, Group 2 exhibited the highest mean push-out bond strength (7.33 ± 0.26 MPa), followed by Group 4 (5.33 ± 0.25 MPa), Group 1 (4.61 ± 0.30 MPa), and Group 3 (2.94 ± 0.32 MPa). The variations in bond strength suggest a notable impact of the chelating agents and final rinse solutions on the resin sealer's interaction with dentin. CONCLUSION The study concludes that the use of EDTA as both a lubricating gel and a final rinse significantly enhances push-out bond strength, outperforming chitosan in this study. Groups with saline as the final rinse (Group 1 and Group 3) exhibited the least bond strength, highlighting the importance of the final rinse in root canal therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To evaluate the push-out bond strength (POBS) of AH Plus sealer to root dentin and the adhesive interface quality after calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) intracanal dressing removal with different final irrigation protocols. METHOD After root canal instrumentation and irrigation, 40 root canals were filled with Ca(OH)2 and sealed. After 14 days, the specimens were randomly distributed according to the irrigation protocols for Ca(OH)2 removal (n = 10): GH2O (control) - distilled water; GNaOCl - 1% NaOCl; GEDTA - 17% EDTA; GEDTA + NaOCl - 17% EDTA + 1% NaOCl. The root canals were filled with AH Plus sealer and gutta-percha. After 7 days, the roots were sectioned into dentin slices and submitted to POBS test and analysis of the adhesive interface under scanning electron microscope. The POBS data were statistically evaluated (analysis of variance and Tukey test). The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the adhesive interface (α = 0.05). RESULTS GH2O, GNaOCl, and GEDTA + NaOCl had similar POBS values, with higher values on the apical third, in comparison with other thirds (P < .05). A homogeneous and free-of-gaps adhesive interface was observed for GH2O, GNaOCl, and GEDTA + NaOCl, with difference between GH2O and GEDTA (P < .05). GH2O and GEDTA + NaOCl presented higher sealer tags formation (P < .05). CONCLUSION The final rinse with EDTA for Ca(OH)2 dressing removal had a negative effect on the POBS of the filling material to root dentin. The use of EDTA followed by NaOCl had results similar to the distilled water, providing uniform and free-of-gaps adhesive interface, and a higher number of sealer tags.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluated the impact of different methods of irrigant agitation on smear layer removal in the apical third of curved mesial canals of 3 dimensionally (D) printed mandibular molars. Materials and Methods Sixty 3D-printed mandibular second molars were used, presenting a 70° curvature and a Vertucci type II configuration in the mesial root. A round cavity was cut 2 mm from the apex using a trephine of 2 mm in diameter, 60 bovine dentin disks were made, and a smear layer was formed. The dentin disks had the adaptation checked in the apical third of the teeth with wax. The dentin disks were evaluated in environmental scanning electron microscope before and after the following irrigant agitation methods: G1(PIK Ultrasonic Tip), G2 (Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation with Irrisonic- PUI), G3 (Easy Clean), G4 (HBW Ultrasonic Tip), G5 (Ultramint X Ultrasonic tip), and G6 (conventional irrigation-CI) (n = 10). All groups were irrigated with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Results All dentin disks were 100% covered by the smear layer before treatment, and all groups significantly reduced the percentage of the smear layer after treatment. After the irrigation protocols, the Ultra-X group showed the lowest coverage percentage, statistically differing from the conventional, PIK, and HBW groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference among Ultramint X, PUI-Irrisonic, and Easy Clean (p > 0.05). None of the agitation methods could remove the smear layer altogether. Conclusions Ultramint X resulted in the most significant number of completely clean specimens.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the penetration of a dye in root dentin after activation with different laser wavelengths. Materials Palatal roots of 38 human molars were enlarged and disinfected. Irrigation activation was performed with an Er:YAG laser: @50 mJ, 15 Hz (Er:YAG); a 9.3 µm CO2 laser: @40% power (CO2); diode lasers 455 nm/970 nm: @0.8 W, 15 Hz (D455, D970) and 808/980 nm: @1 W (D808, D980) and compared to positive control: etching with 35% H3PO4 (POS); negative control: water (NEG) and conventional needle irrigation: NaOCl and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (CONV). Methylene blue solution was introduced in the canal and laser-activated or left untouched for 100 s before the roots were dried and cut into horizontal slices. Dye penetration was automatically calculated by color recognition of two samples per root third (n = 8 per group in each coronal, middle and apical root thirds). The presence and absence of a smear layer was checked in two additional samples of the negative and positive control under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results Full-depth infiltration was not achieved in any group. Dye penetration in CONV was significantly less than in Er:YAG, CO2, POS, D455, D970, D808 and similar to NEG and D980 when results of different root thirds were pooled. Conclusion Laser activation using certain parameters enhanced dye penetration compared to conventional needle irrigation with NaOCl and EDTA (CONV).

Abstract
Background Apical microleakage is considered to be a common reason for the clinical failure of endodontic therapy. Three dimensional sealing of the root canal is one of the main goals of endodontic treatment and is essential for preventing reinfection of the canal and for preserving the health of the periapical tissues, Recently Epoxy resin sealers have been used because of their reduced solubility apical seal and micro-retention to root dentine. Aim and Objective This in vitro study was done to evaluate and compare the apical sealability of AH Plus and RealSeal SE using 5.25% sodium hypochlorite with 17% EDTA and 10% citric acid as irrigants. Materials and methods: 44 single-rooted premolars were selected and the teeth are randomly divided into 4 groups (n=10) and 2 control groups (n=2). The extent of dye penetration, from the apical to the coronal part of the root canal, was assessed using a stereomicroscope at 10x magnification for all groups.One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to compare statistically significant differences among the groups, using SPSS software version 10.0. Results Group IV (Citric acid + RealSeal SE) showed a statistically lower mean microleakage when compared to all other groups. Conclusion From, the present study, it was concluded that, RealSeal SE sealer with 10% citric acid as irrigant (group IV) showed better apical sealability followed by RealSeal SE sealer with 17% EDTA as irrigant (group III), when compared to AH Plus groups which showed least sealability.

Abstract
This study is to examine the effect of graphene oxide (GO) and GO-based nanocomposites (GO_EDTA, GO_CHIT) on the smear layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sixty human single-rooted anterior teeth were used. Samples were randomly categorised into six groups. Distilled water in group 1, 17% EDTA in group 2, chitosan (CHIT) solution in group 3, GO solution in group 4, GO_EDTA solution in group 5 and GO_CHIT in group 6 were used as irrigation solutions. Photomicrographs were acquired from the coronal, middle and apical parts of the samples by SEM. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. There was a statistically significant difference among the groups (p < 0.003). Adding GO to CHIT and EDTA did not affect removing the smear layer in all segments (p < 0.003). Incorporating GO into EDTA and CHIT solutions did not change their interaction with the smear layer.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to investigate the effect of dentin conditioning by subablative Er:YAG (erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) laser on dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) viability. Methods For this in-vitro experimental study, root fragments were longitudinally hemisected after decoronation of single-rooted extracted teeth and preparation of root canals. Prepared samples were randomly assigned to 2 experimental groups (n = 17) as follows; 1) laser conditioning: irradiation with Er:YAG laser beams (2940 nm, 50 mJ per pulse, 20 Hz) 2) Chemical conditioning: 1.5% NaOCl, followed by phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), 17% EDTA, followed by PBS as a final rinse. The samples were ultraviolet-sterilized, and DPSCs were seeded on the samples. MTT assay was performed after 1, 4 and 7 days of incubation to assess the cell viability (n = 5/group per day). Also, after 7 days, two samples of each group underwent SEM (scanning electron microscope) analysis. Statistical analysis was done using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA at a significance level of 0.05. Results Laser irradiated samples exhibited significantly higher cell viability of DPSCs on days 4 (p < 0.0001) and 7 (p < 0.0001), unlike day 1 (p = 0.131). SEM photomicrographs revealed that Er:YAG laser performed much better smear layer removal and created surface irregularities. Several different cell morphologies were observable on the laser-treated samples, which cells with cytoplasmic extensions being the most frequent. Conclusions Dentin conditioning by Er:YAG laser enhances DPSCs viability and can be a valuable modality for conditioning dentin to perform regenerative endodontic procedures. Further clinical studies are suggested.

Abstract
Aims This study evaluated the effectiveness of different mechanical protocols using rotary brush (RB), ultrasonic tip, and oscillatory system (OS) associated with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in the removal of residues and dentin permeability in the cervical and apical segments of the post space. Settings and Design Experimental in vitro study. Methods Forty roots from human first molars were prepared and divided into four groups according to the cleaning protocols: Control (CO), NaOCl 2.5% conventional irrigation with a syringe; RB associated with NaOCl 2.5%; ultrasonic tip (US) associated with NaOCl 2.5%; OS associated with NaOCl 2.5%. Statistical Analysis Used The persistence of residues was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and data submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests, and dentin permeability evaluated by confocal microscopy and date submitted to ANOVA one-way and Tukey's tests (P = 0.05). Results There were no differences in residue cleaning among the CO, RB, US, and OS groups, regardless of the analyzed root segment (P > 0.05). When comparing groups, dentin permeability in the CO group was significantly lower in the cervical segment (P < 0.05). Conclusions The OS group promoted the highest permeability value in the apical segment. RB, US, and OS are similar in removing residues from the post space. However, OS results in higher dentin permeability in the apical segment.

Abstract
Aim This in vitro study aims to assess and compare the effectiveness of different irrigation activation techniques in removing the smear layer from the root canal dentin using Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. Materials and Methods A total of 60 extracted single-rooted premolar with straight canal and mature apex were used for this study. After the selection of teeth, all the samples were decoronated followed by biomechanical preparation. The sample after preparation was irrigated with sodium hypochlorite and randomly divided into three groups with 20 sample in each group (n = 20), (Group 1) control, (Group 2) ultrasonic, and (Group 3) laser. The irrigant activation was done in all the groups and then sample was prepared for the scanning electron microscope analysis. Statistical Analysis The statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney-U-test. Results The findings suggested that the diode laser irrigant activation technique was superior to the ultrasonic and conventional techniques to eradicate smear layers. Conclusion With the limitation of this study, diode laser activation showed better cleaning of root dentinal walls compared to ultrasonic activator and traditional method.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the cleaning efficacy of three irrigant activation devices with a control of non-activated syringe and needle irrigation in curved root canals. Sixty human curved roots were endodontically prepared and divided into four groups (n = 15) with similar root curvature distributions. Final irrigation using 4% NaOCl was performed with a syringe and needle (30-G) alone, or with Eddy sonic powered irrigation system (polymeric tip #0.25/0.06), Endosonic ultrasonic activation (polymeric tip #0.25/0.03), or Irrisafe ultrasonic activation (stainless-steel tip, #0.25/0.00). SEM was used to evaluate cleaning efficacy, employing five-score systems for debris and smear layer. While no significant difference in debris removal was observed between Endosonic or Irrisafe activation and non-activated irrigation, Eddy sonic powered irrigation system significantly improved debris removal in the apical third of curved root canals. Smear layer removal was effective in coronal and mid-root sections for all groups but less so in the apical third. Thus, Eddy sonic powered irrigation system demonstrated higher efficacy in removing debris from the apical third of curved root canals compared with non-activated syringe and needle irrigation. However, all three irrigant activation systems exhibited no difference from the non-activated control in smear layer removal.

Abstract
We assessed the effect of different compositions and concentrations of two etidronate-containing irrigants on the antibacterial activity of sodium hypochlorite (SH) against Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans in vitro. Pure cultures of C. albicans and E. faecalis were isolated from root canal samples. The disc diffusion method was used to compare the antibacterial effect of pure SH and SH mixed with 9%, 15%, and 18% etidronate of two manufactures (dual rinse (DR); IsraDent (ID)) and EDTA. The pH and temperature of the solutions were measured immediately after mixing and within 40 min. The ANOVA revealed a significant influence of the type of irrigating solution on the C. albicans and E. faecalis inhibition zone diameters that ranged from 6.6 to 51.6 mm and from 6.4 to 12.4 mm, respectively. SH with DR 9% exhibited the highest effect against C. albicans. The antifungal activity of the other irrigants was SH = SH + DR15% = SH + DR18% = SH + ID9% > SH + EDTA > SH + ID15% > SH + ID18%. No significant differences in the anti-E. faecalis effect were revealed between the tested solutions except for the mixtures of SH and 15% and 18% ID, which exhibited no antiseptic effect. There was a strong positive correlation between antiseptic activity against both microorganisms and the pH values of the tested solutions. In conclusion, most etidronate formulations did not significantly hamper sodium hypochlorite activity against C. albicans and E. faecalis. The effect was concentration- and manufacturer-dependent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most efficient root canal irrigant to date. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of NaOCl used at different temperatures and concentrations on the compressive strength of root dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-two extracted human single-canaled straight roots of comparable size and length were selected and randomly divided into six groups (n = 12): Group (A) served as a control with unprepared canals. The other groups were instrumented with rotary ProTaper Universal files up to size F3. Group (B) was irrigated with 1% NaOCl at room temperature, Group (C) with 1% NaOCl heated to 70 °C, Group (D) with 5.25% NaOCl at room temperature, and Group (E) with 5.25% NaOCl heated to 70 °C. Saline was used in Group (F). The roots were sectioned into 2-mm-thick disks that underwent compression testing using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS A total of 255 disks were tested. The control group showed the highest compressive strength (p = 0.0112). However, this did not differ significantly from that of heated (p = 0.259) or unheated (p = 0.548) 1% NaOCl. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups of instrumented teeth. CONCLUSION Within the conditions of this study, irrigation with NaOCl at different concentrations and temperatures during root canal preparation did not affect the compressive strength of root dentin. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study demonstrates that the use of NaOCl as a root canal irrigant is not associated with a clinically relevant decrease in root compressive strength, especially when compared to saline.

Abstract
Background Successful endodontic treatment relies on the effective removal of debris and the prevention of smear layer formation within the root canals. The choice of nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary instrument systems can significantly impact these outcomes. Aim This study aims to evaluate and compare the debris and smear layer formation in root canals of extracted mandibular second premolar teeth following instrumentation with the ProTaper Universal (Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, NC) (Group II), Twisted File (Kerr Endodontics, Gilbert, AZ) (Group III), and XP Endo (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) (Group IV) Ni-Ti rotary instrument systems. Methods In this in vitro study, 60 extracted mandibular second premolar teeth were randomly divided into four groups, each containing 15 teeth. Group I served as the control with no instrumentation. Groups II, III, and IV were instrumented with the ProTaper Universal rotary file, the Twisted File, and the XP Endo file systems, respectively. Debris and smear layer formation were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photomicrographs were scored using a standardized index. Results Group II (ProTaper) exhibited the highest mean debris and smear layer scores, with values of 3.50 and 2.70, respectively. Group IV (XP Endo) demonstrated the least debris and smear layer formation, with mean scores of 2.65 and 2.08, respectively. Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences among the groups for both debris and smear layer formation. Conclusion The results highlight the practical importance of selecting appropriate Ni-Ti rotary instrument systems to minimize debris and smear layer formation during endodontic procedures. The XP Endo file system showed promise as a favorable choice in this regard, but further clinical research is needed to validate these findings.

Abstract
AIMS Evaluation of the effects of the latest root canal disinfectants i.e., Micro-bubble emulsion (MBE), Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite (Nd: YAP), Emblica officinalis (E. officinalis) on the removal of smear layer (SL) and push out bond strength (PBS) of resin-based root canal sealer to the radicular dentin. METHODS The coronal portion of sixty single-rooted human mandibular premolar teeth was precisely sectioned at the cementoenamel junction. The canals were prepared to utilize ProTaper universal rotary files till F3. All the study specimens were divided into four groups based on the disinfection regime (n = 15) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl, Group 2: MBE, Group 3: Nd: YAP laser and Group 4: E. officinalis extract. All the canals were then finally irrigated using 17% EDTA solution as a final disinfecting agent. SL removal assessment was performed on five samples from each group using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Ten samples from each group were then filled with root canal filling material and the roots were sectioned. Push-out test and failure mode analysis were performed using the universal testing machine (UTM) and stereomicroscope respectively. The mean scores of PBS and SL removal were compared using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc Tukey's HSD test p = 0.05. RESULTS Group-2 (MBE + EDTA) coronal section (1.50 ± 0.23) exhibited the most effective eradication of SL from the canal space. The apical third of Group-1 (NaOCl+EDTA) (2.68 ± 0.82) samples demonstrated the least effective removal of SL from the radicular canal. The maximum score of PBS of AH plus sealer to the canal dentin was exhibited by the coronal section of Group-2 (MBE + EDTA) (9.55 ± 0.45 MPa) samples. However, the apical third of Group-1 (NaOCl+ EDTA) specimens (5.16 ± 0.32 MPa) demonstrated the minimum EBS. CONCLUSION MBE+ EDTA displayed better smear layer removal and bond integrity of AH plus sealer to the root canal dentin. Nd: YAP+ EDTA laser and E.officinalis displayed comparable outcomes to that of control NaOCl+ EDTA.

Abstract
Introduction The present study aimed to investigate the capacity of different irrigation protocols using heated distilled water at 65°C (HDW), in preventing the formation of the brown-orange precipitate observed after the interaction between sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX). Methods Forty human canines were selected, prepared, and cleaved in two halves. Images of delimited areas in each root canal thirds were obtained through a stereomicroscope (16x and 40x). After reassembly, the teeth were distributed into four groups (n = 10) according to the final irrigation protocol: G1 (no HDW): EDTA + NaOCl + CHX with conventional irrigation (CI); G2 (HDW + CI): EDTA with passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) + NaOCl (PUI) + HDW (CI) + CHX (PUI); G3 (HDW + PUI): EDTA + NaOCl + HDW + CHX with PUI; G4 (HDW + CUI): EDTA (PUI) + NaOCl (PUI) + HDW with continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI) + CHX (PUI). After irrigation, the teeth were re-separated and images of the same delimited areas were obtained again. Scores were assigned according to the amount of precipitate observed, comparing the initial and final images. The data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn and Friedman statistical tests (α = 5%). Results G1(no HDW) showed the highest scores in the analysis between groups (p < 0.001), with a greater amount of precipitate in the cervical and medium thirds (p < 0.001). The thirds of the other experimental groups did not differ from each other (p > 0.05). Conclusion The intermediate irrigation with heated distilled water at 65°C prevented the formation of brown-orange precipitate, regardless of the use of ultrasonic activation (PUI or CUI).

Abstract
This scoping review aimed to synthesize and explore the current boundaries and limitations of laboratory research on the effectiveness of continuous chelation irrigation protocol in endodontics. This scoping review was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Extension for Scoping Reviews. Literature search was conducted on Pubmed and Scopus to identify all laboratory studies evaluating smear layer and hard-tissue debris removal or, antimicrobial efficacy, or dentine erosion induced by continuous chelation. Two independent reviewers performed the all review steps and the relevant items were recorded. Seventy-seven potentially relevant studies were identified. Finally, 23 laboratory studies met the eligibility criteria for qualitative synthesis. Seven studies focused on the smear layer/debris removal outcome, 10 on antimicrobial activity, and 10 on dentine erosion. In general, the continuous chelation protocol was equally or more effective in the cleanliness of root canals and antimicrobial activity compared with traditional sequential protocol. In addition, etidronate solutions seemed to be milder chelating agents compared to those with EDTA, thus resulting in reduced or no dentine erosion and roughness modification. Yet, the methodological differences among the included studies limit the results' generalizability. The continuous chelation seems to be equally or more effective in all investigated outcomes when compared with the traditional sequential protocol. The methodological variability among the studies and shortcomings in the methods employed limit the generalizability and clinical relevance of the results. Standardized laboratory conditions combined with reliable three-dimensional investigation approaches are necessary to obtain clinically informative findings.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the amount of erosion during activated endodontic irrigation with either HEDP or EDTA via high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Two root canals of twenty premolars were prepared with ProTaper Next and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite. Palatal canals, which served as control groups, were sealed, while buccal canals were further irrigated with either EDTA (n = 10) or HEDP (n = 10), which served as test groups. Micro-CT was performed to measure erosion depth. For 2D and 3D measurements, non-parametric repeated ANOVA measurements and post hoc tests were performed. 2D analysis showed highly significant differences between the case groups at each position of the root (p ≤ 0.01). The cervical and apical positions showed significant differences in the EDTA group (p = 0.03). The 3D analysis also showed significant differences between both chelating agents (p < 0.01) and the case and control groups (p = 0.01). The mean erosion depths in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the EDTA group were 45.75, 41.79, and 32.25 µm, and for the HEDP group were 20.25, 16.40, and 15.96 µm, respectively. HEDP seems to have a significantly less erosive effect. Different irrigation protocols with harsher conditions, as might be the case during endodontic retreatment, could be assessed with micro-CT.

Abstract
The penetration depth and extent of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) crystallisation into dentinal tubules at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after chelation and MTA obturation were investigated. Standardised 12 mm human root specimens (45) were prepared with NiTi rotary files using 4% NaOCl irrigation. They were randomly allocated to three irrigants (n = 15: 4% NaOCl, 15% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or Edgemix) and obturated with sodium fluorescein tagged ProRoot MTA. One millimetre thick apical, middle and coronal sections were examined using confocal laser scanning microscopy to determine MTA penetration depth and area. Depths varied from 352 to 1821 μm at 6 weeks depending on section level and were unaffected by chelation. No differences (p > 0.05) were found in mean maximum penetration depth or dentine area (%) between the 3 irrigants at all time intervals. MTA mineralisation penetrated up to 90% of dentinal tubules and can extend to the cementum in roots with patent, non-infected tubules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To comparatively evaluate the nisin-incorporated ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (N-EDTA) and MTAD on cytotoxicity, endodontic biofilm eradication potential, smear layer removal ability, and sealer penetration depth. MATERIALS AND METHODS N-EDTA was prepared and characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Minimum inhibitory, minimum bactericidal, and minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBC, MIC, and MBIC) were determined on Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) strain. The cytocompatibility of N-EDTA and MTAD was evaluated using 3,(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT)-based colorimetric assay. Dentin specimens (n = 88 for antibacterial analysis, n = 170 for sealer penetration depth) were prepared and subjected to the classical irrigating strategy and obturation, respectively. The scanning electron microscopic evaluation (SEM) was done for the evaluation of biofilm disruption and smear layer removal. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) evaluation was done for determining percentage of bacterial viability and sealer penetration depth. Statistical analysis of one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc tests for bacterial viability and Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test for smear layer removal and depth of penetration were done with the significance level set at p < 0.05. RESULTS MTAD and N-EDTA showed cytocompatibility without any statistical differences from each other. For N-EDTA, the MIC and MBC values were 12.5 μg/ml (1:8), and MBIC values were 36 μg/ml. Biofilm disruption and killed bacterial percentage of N-EDTA was statistically higher than MTAD, whereas both the materials showed similar efficacy in the removal of the smear layer and sealer penetration depth. CONCLUSION N-EDTA had negligible cytotoxicity with similar smear layer removal ability, sealer penetration, and better antibiofilm potential than MTAD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE N-EDTA can serve as a viable alternative endodontic irrigant.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine whether erbium laser irradiation emitted by modified glass-fiber tips would improve the intraradicular bonding of fiber posts. Forty human canines were endodontically treated and prepared for fiber-post placement. Roots were divided into five groups (n=8); according to the laser-tip combinations (2,940 nm Er:YAG and 2,780 nm Er,Cr:YSGG). Non-irradiated root canals served as control. Posts were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement and subjected to push-out test. Failure modes were characterized, and intraradicular bonded interfaces were analyzed by SEM and submitted to nanoleakage evaluation. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). No significant differences were observed in cervical and middle sections (p>0.05), while significantly higher bond strengths were observed in apical sections (p<0.05). Laser irradiation reduced adhesive failures, cement-dentin gap formation, and nanoleakage apically. Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the possible use of a non-instrumentation technique including blue light irradiation for root canal cleaning. Extracted human single rooted teeth were selected. Nine different groups included distilled water, NaOCl, intra-canal heated NaOCl, and NaOCl + EDTA irrigation after either instrumentation or non-instrumentation, and a laser application group following non-instrumentation technique. The chemical assessment of the root canal dentine was evaluated using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Surface microstructural analyses were performed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The antimicrobial efficacy of different preparation techniques was evaluated using microbial tests. Light application didn't change the calcium/phosphorus, carbonate/phosphate and amide I/phosphate ratios of the root canal dentin. The root canal dentin preserved its original chemistry and microstructure after light application. The instrumentation decreased the carbonate/phosphate and amide I/phosphate ratios of the root canal dentin regardless of the irrigation solution or technique (p < 0.05). The application of light could not provide antibacterial efficacy to match the NaOCl irrigation. The NaOCl irrigation both in the non-instrumentation and instrumentation groups significantly reduced the number of bacteria (p < 0.05). The use of minimally invasive root canal preparation techniques where the root canal is not instrumented and is disinfected by light followed by obturation with a hydraulic cement sealer reduced the microbial load and preserved the dentin thus may be an attractive treatment option for management of vital teeth needing root canal therapy.

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of different final irrigation regimens (Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet, MTAD, and EDTA) in removing the smear layer from intra-radicular dentin using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Eighty-four mandibular premolars were prepared with ProTaper Universal hand files and were equally divided into four groups i.e. Normal saline (control), EDTA, MTAD and CAP Plasma Jet. Prepared samples in the control, EDTA and MTAD groups were irrigated with 5 milliliters of the irrigant, and it was retained for 2 min. In the CAP Plasma Jet group, the plasma plume was directed towards the canal lumen for 2 min. The smear layer removal of all the groups was evaluated at the coronal, middle and apical thirds. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn's test. Evaluation by SEM showed that the smear layer removal ability of MTAD and EDTA were significantly better than CAP Plasma Jet (p < 0.05). While CAP Plasma Jet showed results comparable to EDTA in the coronal third. In the middle and apical third of the canal, its effect was comparable to the control group (p > 0.05). MTAD and EDTA aided in better smear layer removal than the CAP Plasma Jet in the coronal, middle, and apical third of the test samples. CAP Plasma jet performed better in the coronal third.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and/or calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2 ) are commonly used during root canal treatment. Evaluation of their effectiveness regarding clinical and patient-related outcomes requires further understanding. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of root canal irrigation and dressing for the treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis (AP). METHODS A search was conducted in the PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE, Google scholar databases and available repositories, followed by hand searches, until July 2021. Eligibility criteria followed the a priori formulated Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, Timing, and Study design (PICOTS) framework. Clinical studies restricted to English language were included. The revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials (RoB 2) was used to assess the quality of included studies. Meta-analyses were performed using the fixed-effect model to obtain Risk Ratio (RR) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI), with sensitivity analysis. Overall quality of evidence of meta-analyses was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool. RESULTS The search identified 1357 records of which six fulfilled the inclusion criteria, providing data for 'irrigation' from 212 teeth and for 'dressings' from 438 teeth. Two studies reported no significant difference regarding the outcome 'pain at 7 days' using 2% chlorhexidine vs. 5.25% NaOCl and EDTA or after using different concentrations of NaOCl (1% vs. 5%). No significant difference was detected between different NaOCl concentrations regarding the reduction of AP. A meta-analysis was possible for the comparison of single-visit (SV) versus multiple-visits including the use of Ca(OH)2 demonstrating a significant effect in favour of SV (RR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.03-1.19; p = .007; I2 = 0). RoB of included studies was moderate to low. DISCUSSION The use of Ca(OH)2 for the treatment of AP may not be beneficial. There is scarce or no evidence fulfilling the proposed PICOTS regarding irrigants and dressings. CONCLUSIONS There is moderate certainty that SV treatment is associated with better radiographic evidence of normal periodontal ligament space (strict criteria) compared with the use of Ca(OH)2. Reduction of AP is comparable after irrigation with 1% and 5% NaOCl, whereas postoperative pain at 7 days for the irrigants assessed is similar. REGISTRATION PROSPERO database CRD42021260271.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the effects of three irrigation activation systems (IAS) on postoperative pain (PP) in activating three final irrigants: sodium hypochlorite 5.25%, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid 17%, and chlorhexidine 2%. MATERIALS AND METHODS This parallel randomized clinical trial included referred patients with asymptomatic large-sized apical lesion incisors. A standard method was followed in the canal cleaning and shaping for all included patients in the study. Then, the patients were randomly assigned (1:1 allocation) into three groups: G1 (n = 20) with passive ultrasonic irrigation activation; G2 (n = 20) with XP-Endo Finisher file activation; and G3 (n = 20) with diode laser (810 nm) activation. PP was estimated in all groups using a visual analog scale after 1, 3, 7, and 14 days of treatment. Comparisons between the groups were made using the Kruskal-Wallis test, whereas the Mann-Whitney U test was used in the pairwise comparisons. RESULTS Sixty patients were followed-up in this trial. There were significant differences between the groups in terms of PP After 1, 3, and 7 days of treatment (p = 0.002, p = 0.017, and p = 0.006, respectively). On the first day of treatment, G3 showed the lowest PP compared with G1 and G2 (p = 0.007 and p = 0.001, respectively). On the third day of treatment, G3 showed less PP compared with G2 (p = 0.005). On the seventh day of treatment, G2 showed the highest PP compared with G1 and G3 (p = 0.012 and p = 0.003, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The XP-Endo Finisher file caused the highest PP level especially in the next day and 3 days of the treatment, whereas the diode laser had the lowest PP level during the first week of treatment. It is noteworthy that PP disappeared completely after 2 weeks of treatment with all three IASs. TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial was registered in the ISRCTN registry (Trial ID: SRCTN99457940).

Abstract
According to contemporary dental standards, the primary goal of endodontic therapy is the chemo-mechanical cleaning of the complex root canal system. Watering root canals with approved solutions and activating them are essential parts of this operation. This review outlines various irrigant activation methods for root canal therapy. Specifically, a comparison among the methods of manual dynamic activation, sonics (subsonic, sonic, and ultrasonic), internal heating, and lasers, was conducted. The results in this work were gathered using Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases by searching the following keywords: sodium hypochlorite, cleaning, activation, and irrigation methods. The present work concluded that the use of irrigant activation has a greater benefit than its absence. Regardless, it is impossible to point to a single effective activation method.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the effect of the application method of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) and its influence on the adhesion of fiberglass posts cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods Sixty human mandibular premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups (n = 12), according to the canal irrigant and its application method: 2 groups with conventional syringe irrigation (CSI)-2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (control) and 2% CHX- and 3 groups with 2% CHX irrigation/activation-by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), Easy Clean file, and XP-Endo Finisher file. Two roots per group were evaluated for smear layer (SL) removal by scanning electron microscopy. For other roots, fiber posts were luted using a self-adhesive resin cement. The roots were sectioned into 6 slices for push-out bond strength (BS) (7/group) and nanoleakage (NL) (3/group). Data from SL removal were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (α = 0.05). Data from BS and NL were evaluated by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results For SL removal and BS, the CHX irrigation/activation promoted better values than CSI with CHX (p < 0.05), but it was not significantly different from CSI with NaOCl (p > 0.05). For NL, the lowest values were obtained by the chlorhexidine irrigation/activation groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions Active 2% CHX irrigation can be used to improve the post space cleaning and adhesion before fiber post cementation with self-adhesive resin cements.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smear layer removal from root canals aid in the penetration of both irrigants and endodontic sealer into the dentinal tubules, thereby improving the efficacy of endodontic treatment. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the smear layer removal ability of a conventional endodontic irrigation regimen, MTAD (mixture of tetracycline, acid, and detergent), and QMix™ (Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, North Carolina, United States) with that of a mixture of herbal irrigants, namely, aqueous extracts of Azadirachta indica (neem) and Citrus limon (lemon), evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS We selected 40 extracted human premolar teeth for the study, which we randomly divided into five groups (eight samples each) according to irrigation solution: (i) Group A (normal saline); (ii) Group B (conventional endodontic regimen, 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + 17% ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) + 2% chlorhexidine (CHX)); (iii) Group C (MTAD); (iv) Group D (QMix 2-in-1); and (v) Group E (aqueous extracts of Azadirachta indica and Citrus limon). After we prepared the canals with ProTaper Universal nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary files (Dentsply Sirona) and the respective irrigants, we split the teeth longitudinally to evaluate the amount of remnant smear layer in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds using SEM photomicrographs. We performed statistical analyses of the data using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests, where the level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS The SEM analysis of the coronal third showed mean values of 3.83 in Group A, 3.67 in Group B, 2.79 in Group C, 3.63 in Group D, and 4.00 in Group E. The SEM analysis of the middle third showed mean values of 4.00 in Group A, 3.88 in Group B, 3.75 in Group C, 3.50 in Group D, and 3.50 in Group E. The SEM analysis of the apical third showed mean values of 3.92 in Group A, 3.63 in Group B, 3.71 in Group C, 3.88 in Group D, and 3.17 in Group E. Therefore, we found that there were significant statistical differences between the groups when an overall comparison was done for the coronal, middle, and apical third, with a p-value of 0.001. On multiple comparisons across the different tooth-section thirds. Groups A and B showed statistically significant differences in the apical third (p-value=0.017). Groups A and C showed statistically significant differences in the coronal third and middle third (p-values=0.001 and 0.010, respectively). Groups A and D showed statistically significant differences in the middle third (p-value=0.001). Groups A and E showed statistically significant differences in all thirds (p-values=0.039, 0.001, and 0.001, respectively) Conclusion: The conventional needle irrigation with MTAD showed the highest level of smear layer removal ability on the root canal surface, followed by QMix 2-in-1, the Azadirachta indica leaf and Citrus limon extract mixture, and the conventional endodontic regimen. Normal saline showed the lowest smear layer removal effect.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to compare an experimental model simulating clinical root canal irrigation (root canal model) with a conventional experimental model immersing dentin sample to irrigants (immersion model) to evaluate removal of the smear layer and decalcification of the root canal dentin using sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and two different concentrations of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution. Materials and Methods Forty-five single-rooted extracted human teeth were prepared using a Ni-Ti rotary file. EDTA, NaOCl, and citric acid were used in the root canal models and the immersion models. After the irrigation protocol, root canal surfaces were observed under scanning electron microscopy. Residual smear and decalcification of the root canal dentin were evaluated objectively by measuring the percentage of the area occupied by visible dentin tubules, the number of visible dentin tubules, and the mean area of a visible single dentin tubule. Results Root canal and immersion models with the same irrigation protocol showed significantly different results for smear residues and decalcification of root canal dentin. In the root canal model, neither different EDTA concentrations nor the order of EDTA and NaOCl applications significantly impacted smear residues or decalcification of root canal dentin. Furthermore, no erosion of the root canal dentin surface was observed in any experimental groups in the root canal model using EDTA and NaOCl compared to intact dentin. Conclusions Experimental design affected results for residual smear layer and decalcification of root canal dentin. The order of EDTA and NaOCl use and the concentration of EDTA did not affect results. EDTA and NaOCl irrigation did not cause erosion in the root canal model in this study.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the outcome of post space disinfection using Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECYL), riboflavin photosensitizer (RFP), and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) along with ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) as final irrigant on the bond values of glass fiber post (GFP) to the canal wall. Materials and methods: Forty human mandibular premolars were subjected to root canal treatment after decoronation till the cementoenamel junction. Post space was prepared using a Gates-Glidden drill leaving 4 mm of gutta perch at the apical third of the root section. Random allocation of samples was performed into four groups based on the post space disinfection (n = 10 each): Group 1: 1% RFP and 17% EDTA, group 2: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% EDTA (control), group 3: PIPS and 17% EDTA, and group 4: ECYL and 17% EDTA. GFP was luted using Rely X Unicem. A universal testing machine and stereomicroscope were used to assess the push-out bond strength (PBS) and failure mode, respectively. Analysis of variance determined the PBS amid different experimental groups at three root levels. Multiple group comparison using means of tested groups was identified using post hoc Tukey. Results: The coronal third of group 2 (5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA) demonstrated the highest PBS (8.83 ± 0.11 MPa). However, the lowest bond integrity (4.15 ± 0.52 MPa) was displayed in an apical third of group 1 (RFP +17% EDTA). The intergroup comparison revealed that 5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA at all three levels demonstrated comparable outcomes of PBS with PIPS +17% EDTA and ECYL +17% EDTA specimens (p > 0.05). However, riboflavin +17% EDTA demonstrated the lowest bond strength (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Er,Cr: YSGG and PIPS in combination with 17% EDTA demonstrated comparable outcomes of bond score with those of conventional gold standard irrigation regime 5.25% NaOCl.

Abstract
The use of chelating agents (CAs) in the endodontic irrigation protocol is required to dissolve the inorganic components of the smear layer. We aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of dental professionals regarding the use of CAs during root canal treatment. A cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted among specialized endodontists and general dentists who routinely perform endodontic treatment and work in government-funded or private clinics in Moscow. The 8 min survey consisted of four parts: basic demographic data, knowledge (five items), attitude (four items), and practice (five items). We collected 376 completed questionnaires; a majority of the respondents were general dentists (87.5%) and worked in private clinics (77.4%). Most respondents (83.5%) showed a fair knowledge of the CAs used in endodontics, while 16.5% showed a poor knowledge of the topic. Small yet significant differences were found between endodontists and general practitioners and between dentists employed by private and government-funded clinics. A majority of dental practitioners (83%) demonstrated a positive attitude towards the use of CAs in endodontic treatment, and there were no differences among the study subgroups. Almost a third of the respondents always used chelating solutions during endodontic treatment, while 17% of the respondents did not use them at all. There were significant differences in this parameter between dentists working in private and government-funded clinics. Practice significantly correlated with attitude towards chelating agents and with knowledge of the topic. In conclusion, dental practitioners demonstrated a fair knowledge of CAs. Despite a positive attitude, 71% of the respondents did not use CAs for all endodontic patients.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Successful root canal treatment depends on the thorough removal of biofilms through chemomechanical preparation. This study aimed to investigate and compare the cleaning and disinfecting efficiency of oval-shaped root canals using XP-endo Shaper (XPS), ProTaper Next (PTN), and HyFlex CM (HCM) in combination with passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI). Materials and Methods: Ninety extracted teeth were contaminated and randomly divided into three groups: XPS, PTN, and HCM. Each group was assigned to three subgroups: subgroup A (sterile saline), subgroup B (3% sodium hypochlorite and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), and subgroup C (3% sodium hypochlorite, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and PUI). Bacterial sampling was conducted both from baseline samples and samples after chemomechanical preparation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate the residue bacterial biofilms, hard tissue debris, and smear layers on the buccolingual walls of oval-shaped root canals. Results: When combined with sterile saline, XPS demonstrated a higher reduction of bacterial counts and was more effective in eradicating Enterococcus faecalis in the middle third of the canals compared to the other instruments (p < 0.05). Additionally, when used with antimicrobial irrigants, XPS was more effective in disinfecting the coronal third of the canals than the other instruments (p < 0.05). Furthermore, XPS reduced hard tissue debris more effectively in the middle third of canals than in the apical third (p < 0.05). Conclusions: XPS outperforms PTN and HCM in disinfecting oval-shaped root canals. Despite the fact that combining XPS and PUI improves cleaning and disinfecting, removing hard tissue debris from the critical apical area remains challenging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the capacity of canal wall smear layer removal, precipitation caused by irrigant interaction, antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of three 2-in-1 root canal irrigating solutions METHODS: Forty single-rooted teeth were mechanically instrumented and irrigated with QMix, SmearOFF, Irritrol or 0.9% saline. Each tooth was evaluated for smear layer removal using scanning electron microscopy. Precipitation after interaction of the irrigating solutions with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was evaluated with 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the irrigants against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms. Neutral red and clonogenic assays were performed on Chinese hamster V79 cells to evaluate the short-term and long-term cytotoxicity of the irrigants RESULTS: There was no significant difference between QMix and SmearOFF in eliminating smear layers from the coronal-third and middle-third of the canal spaces. In the apical-third, SmearOFF removed smear layers effectively. Irritrol incompletely removed smear layers from all the canal-thirds. When mixed with NaOCl, precipitation was evident only with Irritrol. QMix demonstrated a higher E. faecalis cell death percentage and a smaller biovolume. SmearOFF exhibited a larger decrease in biovolume compared with Irritrol, although Irritrol had a higher death percentage. Irritrol was more cytotoxic than the other irrigants on a short-term interval. In terms of long-term cytotoxicity, both Irritrol and QMix were cytotoxic CONCLUSION: QMix and SmearOFF performed better in smear layer removal and antimicrobial activity. QMix and Irritrol were cytotoxic when compared to SmearOFF. Irritrol was associated with precipitation after interacting with NaOCl.

Abstract
Introduction In root canal treatment, chemical debridement of the root canal with the help of irrigants is important due to the complex internal anatomy of the teeth. Biomechanical root canal preparation produces a smear layer. It covers the dentinal tubules, which may interfere with the penetration of various irrigants and intracanal medicaments, so the smear layer has to be removed. The potential side effects and certain limitations of chemical irrigants for smear layer removal have led to a shift toward herbal alternatives. Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the smear layer removal efficacy of Neem leaf extract, Propolis, and Orange oil as endodontic irrigants using the scanning electron microscope. Materials and Methods Ninety samples were taken and then randomly (simple random sampling method) divided into three experimental groups (n = 30) depending upon different endodontic irrigants used: Group 1-Neem leaf extract, Group 2-Orange oil and Group 3-Propolis and smear layer removal evaluation was done under the scanning electron microscope Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at all the levels, i.e., coronal, middle, and apical. Results The collected data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Group 1 (Neem leaf extract) showed the highest smear layer removal efficacy, which was followed by Group 2 (Orange oil) and the least efficacy of smear layer removal was shown by Group 3 (Propolis) at coronal, middle, and apical levels. Conclusion Group 1 (Neem leaf extract) performed significantly better in removing the smear layer at coronal, middle, and apical levels as compared to the other two groups.

Abstract
Background: In endodontics, the three processes of biomechanical preparation, disinfection, and obturation are each essential. The electron microprobe and scanning electron microscope (SEM) allowed for the detection and identification of the smear layer and debris. The purpose of the current investigation was to use a scanning electron microscope to evaluate the relative merits of two single-file systems, the reciprocating WaveOne and the continuous motion F360 files, in the cleaning and contouring of root canals in removed teeth. Materials and method: The 50 central maxillary permanent teeth Data was gathered from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division at Sri Ganganagar's Maharaja Ganga Singh Dental College and Research Centre for a number of reasons. Group A followed the manufacturer's guidelines for using the WaveOne instrument, whereas Group B utilised the F360. Reciprocating motion WaveOne system (group A) and continuous motion F360 system (group B) root canals were scored at three levels: coronal third, middle third, and apical third (group B). SPSS version 22 was used for the data analysis. The data were examined using the chi-square test and the one-way analysis of variance. Results: A greater quantity of smear layer was found in the apical third, whereas better results were achieved in the coronal and middle thirds. When compared to the F360 file system, the WaveOne file system is subpar when it comes to clearing the canal of debris. While both groups showed a large amount of debris in the apical third, outcomes were somewhat better in the coronal and middle thirds. Conclusion: The WaveOne and F360 file systems were both more effective in removing trash from the coronal and middle thirds of the disc than they were from the apical thirds. In comparison to the continuous motion F360 file system, WaveOne files demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the amount of debris cleared from root canals in all three root zone thirds (coronal, middle, and apical). The reciprocating action of the WaveOne file system, in contrast to the continuous motion of the F360 file system, resulted in more extensive cleaning of the root canal smear layer in the coronal and middle thirds and less thorough cleaning in the apical thirds of the canal.

Abstract
Background This study evaluated the effect of using chitosan, nano-chitosan, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as final irrigating solutions on smear layer cleanliness and Ca/P ratio of dentin. Methodology Forty-eight decoronated human single-rooted teeth were used. They were divided randomly into four groups (n = 12) based on the final irrigating solution used as follows: (a) control group (IA; n = 6) normal saline, (IB; n = 6) were left unprepared; group II - 0.2% chitosan; group III - 0.2% nano-chitosan; and group IV - 17% EDTA. Samples were prepared using ProTaper Next and irrigated with 2.6% NaOCl 5 ml after each instrument using 31-gauge needle. Final rinse was used 5 ml/3 min according to the assigned group. The specimens were prepared for evaluation. Results Best smear layer removal was observed in group IV. No statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed between the experimental groups (II, III, and IV) coronally; however, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) was observed between groups II and IV at middle and apical thirds. Intragroup comparison showed that apical third exhibited the highest mean smear layer score among all experimental groups. The highest mean Ca/P ratio was in the 0.2% nano-chitosan group, while the highest calcium loss was in the 17% EDTA group. Conclusions 17% EDTA is a potent chelating agent that can successfully remove the smear layer but compromises the Ca/p ratio of dentin. However, 0.2% chitosan and its nanoparticles have comparable chelating effects and induce remineralization of the root canal dentin.

Abstract
Hard dental tissue pathologies, such as caries, are conventionally managed through replacement by tooth-colored inert biomaterials. Tissue engineering provides novel treatment approaches to regenerate lost dental tissues based on bioactive materials and/or signaling molecules. While regeneration in the form of reparative dentin (osteo-dentin) is feasible, the recapitulation of the tubular microstructure of ortho-dentin and its special features is sidelined. This study characterized in vitro, and in vivo human EDTA-treated, freeze-dried dentin matrices (HTFD scaffolds) conditioned with calcium phosphate nanoparticles (NPs) bearing plasmids encoding dentinogenesis-inducing factors (pBMP2/NPs or pDMP1/NPs). The uptake and transfection efficiency of the synthesized NPs on dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) increased in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, as evaluated qualitatively by confocal laser microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, and quantitatively by flow cytometry, while, in parallel, cell viability decreased. HTFD scaffolds conditioned with the optimal transfectability-to-viability concentration at 4 µg Ca/mL of each of the pBMP2/NPs or pDMP1/NPs preserved high levels of cell viability, evidenced by live/dead staining in vitro and caused no adverse reactions after implantation on C57BL6 mice in vivo. HTFD/NPs constructs induced rapid and pronounced odontogenic shift of the DPSCs, as evidenced by relevant gene expression patterns of RunX2, ALP, BGLAP, BMP-2, DMP-1, DSPP by real-time PCR, and acquirement of polarized meta-mitotic phenotype with cellular protrusions entering the dentinal tubules as visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Taken together, HTFD/NPs constitute a promising tool for customized reconstruction of the ortho-dentin/odontoblastic layer barrier and preservation of pulp vitality. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In clinical dentistry, the most common therapeutic approach for the reconstruction of hard dental tissue defects is the replacement by resin-based restorative materials. Even modern bioactive materials focus on reparative dentinogenesis, leading to amorphous dentin-bridge formation in proximity to the pulp. Therefore, the natural microarchitecture of tubular ortho-dentin is not recapitulated, and the sensory and defensive role of odontoblasts is sidelined. This study approaches the reconstruction at the dentin-pulp interface using a construct of human treated dentin (HTFD) scaffold and plasmid-carrying nanoparticles (NPs) encoding dentinogenic factors (DMP-1 or BMP-2) with excellent in vitro and in vivo properties. As a future perspective, the HTFD/NPs constructs could act as bio-fillings for personalized reconstruction of the dentin-pulp interface.

Abstract
The utilization of lasers has been regarded as a novel technique for the purposes of clinical use in the dental field. Recently, numerous studies have been conducted on the potential applications of laser therapy in endodontics. Moreover, due to their ablation, penetrability, and disinfection capabilities, lasers have performed well with respect to endodontic treatments, including root canal treatment, vital pulp therapy (pulp capping and pulpotomy), dentinal hypersensitivity treatment, and management of dental pain related to pulp and periradicular disease. In particular, the superiorities of laser-aided pulp therapy are emphasized through condensed clinical controlled trials, and histological studies, in this review. Moreover, the ingenious use of laser applications with respect to aiding in the acceleration of root development and the extraction of foreign matters (i.e., broken files and fiber posts) in canals has quickly become the cutting-edge trend of current research. This review offers a summary and discussion of the current literature on all the aforementioned laser applications. Moreover, the characteristics of laser devices, including erbium lasers, neodymium-doped lasers, CO2 lasers, and diode lasers, are detailed and discussed here, providing useful references for laser application in endodontics. We also focus on the different wavelengths with respect to the lasers that are applied in endodontics. High-power lasers perform well as operative instruments; in addition, low-level lasers lead to the regulation of pulp inflammation, and the promotion of pulp healing. This narrative review provides a summary of the advanced applications of lasers in conjunction with various devices in the practice of endodontics, and aims to inspire innovative perspectives on lasers in the context of the treatment of dental diseases, especially pulp diseases, in the future.
