Winter at the alpine timberline causes complex within-tree patterns of water potential and embolism in Picea abies

Adaptive strategies to freeze-thaw cycles in branch hydraulics of tree species coexisting in a temperate forest

Freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) limit the distribution and survival of temperate tree species. Tree species with different wood types coexist in temperate forests and are subjected to the same FTCs. It is essential to understand how these trees differentially cope with xylem hydraulic failure induced by FTCs in the field. The branch hydraulic traits and nonstructural carbohydrate concentration of six coexisting tree species in a temperate forest were measured from mid-winter to early spring when the FTCs occurred from January to April. The percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC) was lower, and the water potential inducing a 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (P50) was more negative in tracheid trees than in ring- and diffuse-porous trees, suggesting tracheid trees with narrow tracheid diameters showed less vulnerable to embolism and provided a lower degree of hydraulic failure during FTCs (stronger resistance). Ring-porous trees always showed lower hydraulic conductivity and higher PLC and P50, and these traits did not change during FTCs, suggesting that they might lose the hydraulic functions in winter and abandon the last year xylem. The P50 in diffuse-porous increased after several FTCs (frost fatigue), but that in tracheid species continued to increase (or even decrease) until the end of FTCs (69 cycles), suggesting that tracheid trees were less sensitive to frost fatigue than diffuse-porous trees. Soluble sugar concentration in deciduous trees negatively correlated with PLC at the end of FTCs, indicating that the effect of soluble sugar on refilling embolism occurred in early spring. While the soluble sugar concentration of deciduous trees decreased, that of two evergreen tracheid trees gradually increased, possibly due to the winter photosynthesis of evergreen leaves. Our results suggest temperate trees adopt different strategies to cope with the same FTCs. These findings enrich the understanding of plant hydraulics and carbon physiology in winter and provide insights into the response of different species coexisting in temperate forests under climate change.

Leaf-branch vulnerability segmentation occurs all year round for three temperate evergreen tree species

Vulnerability segmentation (VS) and Hydraulic segmentation (HS) hypotheses propose higher hydraulic resistance and vulnerability to embolism in leaves than in branches, respectively. The VS and HS are suggested as an acclimation strategy of trees to drought stress, but whether they occur during freezing stress has rarely been explored. We measured the leaf and branch hydraulic traits of three temperate evergreen tree species [Picea koraiensis (Korean spruce), Pinus koraiensis (Korean pine), and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica (Mongolian pine)] during four seasons (winter, spring, summer, and autumn) across the year. We assessed the applicability of VS and HS all year round, particularly in winter. The water potential at which leaf hydraulic conductance lost 50% (P_50L), was more negative in winter than in summer, while higher leaf mass per area was obtained in winter. These results suggest that these species invest more carbon into leaf (including hydraulic systems) to acclimate to winter frost drought. Leaf and branch hydraulic conductance (K_mL and K_mB) were lower, and the percentage loss of branch hydraulic conductance (PLC_B) was higher in spring than in autumn. These results were probably because of more freeze-thaw cycles in spring (69 cycles) than in autumn (37 cycles). The water potential at which branch hydraulic conductance lost 50%, P_50B, was more negative than P_50L across the year. The values of VS (P_50L minus P_50B) were positive, i.e. leaf was more vulnerable than the branch in all species and across seasons, with higher values occurring in spring or autumn. However, K_mL positively correlated with K_mB, suggesting hydraulic coordination between leaf and branch, but did not support HS. Our findings indicate that leaf-branch vulnerability segmentation can occur all year round, including freezing stress, to protect branches from hydraulic failure in temperate evergreen conifers.

Pit aspiration causes an apparent loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity in a subalpine fir (Abies mariesii Mast.) overwintering at the alpine timberline

Conifers growing at the alpine timberline are exposed to combinatorial stresses that induce embolism in xylem during winter. We collected branches of Abies mariesii Mast. at the timberline on Mt Norikura of central Japan to evaluate the seasonal changes in the loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity (percent loss of hydraulic conductivity; PLC). Concurrently, we evaluated the distribution of embolized tracheids in native samples via cryo-scanning electron microscopic (cryo-SEM) observation in comparison with the drought-induced embolism samples used for the vulnerability curve. The twigs collected in late winter showed 100 PLC at a water potential of ~-3 MPa, and air-filled tracheids were observed sporadically in the cryo-SEM images. The cryo-SEM images also showed that nearly all pits of the samples from the timberline were aspirated in the xylem with 100 PLC. Conversely, in drought-induced samples used for vulnerability analysis, lower frequency of aspirated pits was observed at similar water potentials and all tracheids in the earlywood of xylem with 100 PLC were filled with air. We hypothesized that pit aspiration is the primary cause of the pronounced winter xylem conductivity loss at the timberline when water potential is near, but still above, the drought-induced vulnerability threshold. Pit aspiration before water loss may be an adaptation to severe winter conditions at timberlines to prevent widespread xylem embolism. The possible causes of pit aspiration are discussed in relation to complex stresses under harsh winter conditions at timberlines.

Narrow vessels cavitate first during a simulated drought in Eucalyptus camaldulensis

Establishing drying-limits for mortality of different tree species and understanding the anatomical and physiological traits involved is crucial to predict forests' responses to climate change. The xylem of Eucalyptus camaldulensis presents a complex of solitary vessels surrounded by different imperforate tracheary elements and parenchyma that influence, in a poorly known way, its hydraulic functioning. We aimed at describing the dynamics of embolism propagation in this type of xylem, seeking any vessel-size pattern, and unraveling the threshold of xylem embolism leading to nonrecovery after drought in E. camaldulensis. We assigned potted saplings to a protracted water-stress for 70 days. We relied on colorimetric and hydraulic methods to test for links between xylem anatomy and embolism propagation in the main stem. On average, the occurrence of embolism was randomly distributed in the stem xylem, but the probability of embolized vessels was higher than predicted by chance in the narrowest vessels of individuals that experienced low to moderate water-stress. The saplings could recover from severe water-stress if their percentage loss of conductance (PLC) was <77%, but not when the PLC was ˃ 85%. We concluded that, contrary to results reported for most species, the narrowest vessels are the most vulnerable to cavitation in E. camaldulensis, suggesting a lack of tradeoff between xylem efficiency and safety (in response to drought) at the tissue level. These results challenge the well-established paradigm of the effect of vessel size on cavitation, which states that the widest conduits are the most vulnerable to both freeze-thaw and drought-induced cavitation.

Branch water uptake and redistribution in two conifers at the alpine treeline

During winter, conifers at the alpine treeline suffer dramatic losses of hydraulic conductivity, which are successfully recovered during late winter. Previous studies indicated branch water uptake to support hydraulic recovery. We analyzed water absorption and redistribution in Picea abies and Larix decidua growing at the treeline by in situ exposure of branches to δ2H-labelled water. Both species suffered high winter embolism rates (> 40-60% loss of conductivity) and recovered in late winter (< 20%). Isotopic analysis showed water to be absorbed over branches and redistributed within the crown during late winter. Labelled water was redistributed over 425 ± 5 cm within the axes system and shifted to the trunk, lower and higher branches (tree height 330 ± 40 cm). This demonstrated relevant branch water uptake and re-distribution in treeline conifers. The extent of water absorption and re-distribution was species-specific, with L. decidua showing higher rates. In natura, melting snow might be the prime source for absorbed and redistributed water, enabling embolism repair and restoration of water reservoirs prior to the vegetation period. Pronounced water uptake in the deciduous L. decidua indicated bark to participate in the process of water absorption.

Effects of xylem embolism on the winter survival of Abies veitchii shoots in an upper subalpine region of central Japan

At high elevations, winter climatic conditions frequently cause excessive drought stress, which can induce embolism in conifer trees. We investigated the formation and repair of winter embolism in subalpine fir (Abies veitchii) growing near the timberline. We found a complete loss in xylem conductivity [100% percent loss of conductivity (PLC)] at the wind-exposed site (W+) and 40% PLC at the wind-protected site (W−). A PLC of 100% was far above the embolism rate expected from the drought-induced vulnerability analysis in the laboratory. At the W+ site, a PLC of 100% was maintained until May; this suddenly decreased to a negligible value in June, whereas the recovery at the W− site started in late winter and proceeded stepwise. The contrast between the two sites may have occurred because of the different underlying mechanisms of winter embolism. If most tracheids in the xylem of 100% PLC are air-filled, it will be difficult to refill quickly. However, embolism caused by pit aspiration could be restored rapidly, because aspirated pits isolate tracheids from each other and prevent the spread of cavitation. Although severe embolism may cause frost damage of needles, it may have a role in holding water within the stem.

Insights into trunks of Pinus cembra L.: analyses of hydraulics via electrical resistivity tomography

The lack of elevational changes in electrical resistivity in Pinus cembra trunks indicated consistent growth and hydraulics across elevations. Though, electrical resistivity tomograms exhibited pronounced temperature-driven seasonal changes.

ABSTRACT

Alpine conifers growing at high elevation are exposed to low temperatures, which may limit xylogenesis and cause pronounced seasonal changes in tree hydraulics. Electrical resistivity (ER) tomography enables minimal invasive monitoring of stems in situ. We used this technique to analyze Pinus cembra trunks along a 400 m elevational gradient up to the timberline and over seasons. Furthermore, ER data of earlywood across tree rings were compared with the respective specific hydraulic conductivity (K S), measured on extracted wood cores. ER tomograms revealed pronounced changes over the year and a strong correlation between average ER (ERmean) and air and xylem temperatures. Surprisingly, no elevational changes in ERmean, earlywood ER or K S were observed. ER data corresponded to variation in earlywood K S, which decreased from the youngest (ca. 4-5 cm2s-1 MPa-1) to the oldest tree rings (0.63 ± 0.22 cm2s-1 MPa-1). The lack of changes in ER data and earlywood K S along the study transect indicated consistent growth patterns and no major changes in structural and functional hydraulic traits across elevation. The constant decrease in earlywood K S with tree ring age throughout all elevations highlights the hydraulic relevance of the outermost tree rings in P. cembra. Seasonal measurements demonstrated pronounced temperature effects on ER, and we thus recommend a detailed monitoring of trunk temperatures for ER tomography.

Winter Embolism and Recovery in the Conifer Shrub Pinus mugo L

Research Highlights: Pronounced winter embolism and recovery were observed in the Alpine conifer shrub Pinus mugo L. Data indicated that the hydraulic courses and underlying mechanism were similar to timberline trees. Background and Objectives: At high elevation, plants above the snow cover are exposed to frost drought and temperature stress during winter. Previous studies demonstrated winter stress to induce low water potentials (Ψ) and significant xylem embolism (loss of conductivity, or LC) in evergreen conifer trees, and recovery from embolism in late winter. Here, we analyzed xylem hydraulics and related structural and cellular changes in a conifer shrub species. Materials and Methods: The uppermost branches of Pinus mugo shrubs growing at the Alpine timberline were harvested over one year, and the Ψ, water content, LC, proportion of aspirated pits, and carbohydrate contents were analyzed. Results: Minimum Ψ (−1.82 ± 0.04 MPa) and maximum LC (39.9% ± 14.5%) values were observed in mid and late winter, followed by a recovery phase. The proportion of aspirated pits was also highest in winter (64.7% ± 6.9% in earlywood, 27.0% ± 1.4% in latewood), and decreased in parallel with hydraulic recovery in late winter and spring. Glucose and fructose contents gradually decreased over the year, while starch contents (also microscopically visible as starch grains in needle and stem tissues) increased from May to July. Conclusions: The formation and recovery of embolism in Pinus mugo were similar to those of timberline trees, as were the underlying mechanisms, with pit aspiration enabling the isolation of embolized tracheids, and changes in carbohydrate contents indicating adjustments of osmotic driving forces for water re-distribution. The effects of future changes in snow cover regimes may have pronounced and complex effects on shrub-like growth forms, because a reduced snow cover may shorten the duration of frost drought, but expose the plants to increased temperature stress and impair recovery processes.

Repair of severe winter xylem embolism supports summer water transport and carbon gain in flagged crowns of the subalpine conifer Abies veitchii

Xylem embolism induced by winter drought is a serious dysfunction in evergreen conifers growing at wind-exposed sites in the mountains. Some coniferous species can recover from winter embolism. The aim of this study was to determine whether wind direction influences embolism formation and/or repair dynamics on short windward and long leeward branches of asymmetrical `flagged' crowns. We analyzed the effect of branch orientation on percentage loss of xylem conductive area (PLC), leaf functional traits and the xylem:leaf area ratio for subalpine, wind-exposed flagged-crown Abies veitchii trees in the northern Yatsugatake Mountains of central Japan. In late winter, the shoot water potential was below -2.5 MPa, and the PLC exceeded 80% in 2-year-old branches, independent of branch orientation within a flagged crown. Both of these parameters almost fully recovered by summer. At branch internodes 4 years of age and older, seasonal changes in PLC were not found in either windward or leeward branches, but the PLC was higher in less leafy windward branches. The leaf nitrogen content and water-use efficiency of mature leaves were comparable between windward branches and leafy leeward branches. The ratio of xylem conductive area to total leaf area was the same for windward and leeward branches. These results indicate that the repair of winter xylem embolism allows leaf physiological functions to be maintained under sufficient leaf water supply, even on winter-wind-exposed branches. This permits substantial photosynthetic carbon gain during the following growing season on both windward and leeward branches. Thus, xylem recovery from winter embolism is a key trait for the survival of harsh winters and to support productivity on the individual level in flagged-crown A. veitchii trees.

Robustness of xylem properties in conifers: analyses of tracheid and pit dimensions along elevational transects

In alpine regions, tree hydraulics are limited by low temperatures that restrict xylem growth and induce winter frost drought and freezing stress. While several studies have dealt with functional limitations, data on elevational changes in functionally relevant xylem anatomical parameters are still scarce. In wood cores of Pinus cembra L. and Picea abies (L.) Karst. trunks, harvested along five elevational transects, xylem anatomical parameters (tracheid hydraulic diameter dh, wall reinforcement (t/b)2), pit dimensions (pit aperture Da, pit membrane Dm and torus Dt diameters) and respective functional indices (torus overlap O, margo flexibility) were measured. In both species, tracheid diameters decreased and (t/b)2 increased with increasing elevation, while pit dimensions and functional indices remained rather constant (P. cembra: Dt 10.3 ± 0.2 μm, O 0.477 ± 0.005; P. abies: Dt 9.30 ± 0.18 μm, O 0.492 ± 0.005). However, dh increased with tree height following a power trajectory with an exponent of 0.21, and also pit dimensions increased with tree height (exponents: Dm 0.18; Dt 0.14; Da 0.11). Observed elevational trends in xylem structures were predominantly determined by changes in tree size. Tree height-related changes in anatomical traits showed a remarkable robustness, regardless of the distributional ranges of study species. Despite increasing stress intensities towards the timberline, no adjustment in hydraulic safety at the pit level was observed.

The cost of avoiding freezing in stems: trade-off between xylem resistance to cavitation and supercooling capacity in woody plants

Stems and leaves of Olea europaea L. (olive) avoid freezing damage by substantial supercooling during the winter season. Physiological changes during acclimation to low temperatures were studied in five olive cultivars. Water relations and hydraulic traits, ice nucleation temperature (INT) and temperatures resulting in 50% damage (LT50) were determined. All cultivars showed a gradual decrease in INT and LT50 from the dry and warm summer to the wet and cold winter in Patagonia, Argentina. During acclimation to low temperatures there was an increase in leaf cell wall rigidity and stomatal conductance (gs), as well as a decrease in leaf apoplastic water content, leaf water potential (Ψ), sap flow and stem hydraulic conductivity (ks). More negative Ψ as a consequence of high gs and detrimental effects of low temperatures on root activity resulted in a substantial loss of ks due to embolism formation. Seasonal stem INT decrease from summer to winter was directly related to the xylem resistance to cavitation, determined by the loss of ks across cultivars. Thus the loss of freezable water in xylem vessels by embolisms increased stem supercooling capacity and delayed ice propagation from stems to the leaves. For the first time, a trade-off between xylem resistance to cavitation and stem and leaf supercooling capacity was observed in plants that avoid extracellular freezing by permanent supercooling. The substantial loss of hydraulic function in olive cultivar stems by embolism formation with their high repair costs are compensated by avoiding plant damage at very low subzero temperatures.

Assessing the thermal dissipation sap flux density method for monitoring cold season water transport in seasonally snow-covered forests

Productivity of conifers in seasonally snow-covered forests is high before and during snowmelt when environmental conditions are optimal for photosynthesis. Climate change is altering the timing of spring in many locations, and changes in the date of transition from winter dormancy can have large impacts on annual productivity. Sap flow methods provide a promising approach to monitor tree activity during the cold season and the winter-spring and fall-winter transitions. Although sap flow techniques have been widely used, cold season results are generally not reported. Here we examine the feasibility of using the Granier thermal dissipation (TD) sap flux density method to monitor transpiration and dormancy of evergreen conifers during the cold season. We conducted a laboratory experiment which demonstrated that the TD method reliably detects xylem water transport (when it occurs) both at near freezing temperature and at low flow rate, and that the sensors can withstand repeated freeze-thaw events. However, the dependence between sensor output and water transport rate in these experiments differed from the established TD relation. In field experiments, sensors installed in two Abies forests lasted through two winters and a summer with low failure. The baseline (no-flow) sensor output varied considerably with temperature during the cold season, and a new baseline algorithm was developed to accommodate this variation. The Abies forests differed in elevation (2070 and 2620 m), and there was a clear difference in timing of initiation and cessation of transpiration between them. We conclude that the TD method can be reliably used to examine water transport during cold periods with associated low flow conditions.

Annual patterns of xylem embolism in high-yield apple cultivars

Temperate angiosperm species show pronounced annual patterns in xylem embolism. In this study, we investigated whether high-yield cultivars of Malus domestica Borkh. growing under optimised soil water conditions follow similar patterns to wild-type plants, and evaluated crucial factors for the formation of winter embolism and the subsequent restoration of the hydraulic system in spring. In five different cultivars growing at three different sites, various hydraulic and microclimatic parameters were monitored over three successive years. In all cultivars on all sites and in all years, the percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC) increased in autumn with freeze-thaw events and accumulated over winter. Maximum values were reached in late winter and differed significantly among cultivars. In spring, the hydraulic system was restored and PLC remained negligible during summer. Embolism formation in autumn was significantly correlated with the occurrence of freeze-thaw events, whereas further conductivity losses over winter were related to winter desiccation and influenced by climatic and cultivar-specific parameters. Restoration of the hydraulic system in spring was strongly linked to a decrease in the starch content of wood and buds, and soil temperature. Despite high soil water availability, hydraulic recovery took several weeks and was not completed before bud break. Spring is thus a critical phase for temperate angiosperms, especially for high-yield cultivars with risky hydraulic strategies.

Cavitation and water fluxes driven by ice water potential in Juglans regia during freeze-thaw cycles

Freeze-thaw cycles induce major hydraulic changes due to liquid-to-ice transition within tree stems. The very low water potential at the ice-liquid interface is crucial as it may cause lysis of living cells as well as water fluxes and embolism in sap conduits, which impacts whole tree-water relations. We investigated water fluxes induced by ice formation during freeze-thaw cycles in Juglans regia L. stems using four non-invasive and complementary approaches: a microdendrometer, magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray microtomography, and ultrasonic acoustic emissions analysis. When the temperature dropped, ice nucleation occurred, probably in the cambium or pith areas, inducing high water potential gradients within the stem. The water was therefore redistributed within the stem toward the ice front. We could thus observe dehydration of the bark's living cells leading to drastic shrinkage of this tissue, as well as high tension within wood conduits reaching the cavitation threshold in sap vessels. Ultrasonic emissions, which were strictly emitted only during freezing, indicated cavitation events (i.e. bubble formation) following ice formation in the xylem sap. However, embolism formation (i.e. bubble expansion) in stems was observed only on thawing via X-ray microtomography for the first time on the same sample. Ultrasonic emissions were detected during freezing and were not directly related to embolism formation. These results provide new insights into the complex process and dynamics of water movements and ice formation during freeze-thaw cycles in tree stems.

Effects of environmental factors and management practices on microclimate, winter physiology, and frost resistance in trees

Freezing stress is one of the most important limiting factors determining the ecological distribution and production of tree species. Assessment of frost risk is, therefore, critical for forestry, fruit production, and horticulture. Frost risk is substantial when hazard (i.e., exposure to damaging freezing temperatures) intersects with vulnerability (i.e., frost sensitivity). Based on a large number of studies on frost resistance and frost occurrence, we highlight the complex interactive roles of environmental conditions, carbohydrates, and water status in frost risk development. To supersede the classical empirical relations used to model frost hardiness, we propose an integrated ecophysiologically-based framework of frost risk assessment. This framework details the individual or interactive roles of these factors, and how they are distributed in time and space at the individual-tree level (within-crown and across organs). Based on this general framework, we are able to highlight factors by which different environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, light, flood, and drought), and management practices (pruning, thinning, girdling, sheltering, water aspersion, irrigation, and fertilization) influence frost sensitivity and frost exposure of trees.

Evaluation of the impact of frost resistances on potential altitudinal limit of trees

Winter physiology of woody plants is a key issue in temperate biomes. Here, we investigated different frost resistance mechanisms on 1-year-old branches of 11 European tree species from November until budburst: (i) frost hardiness of living cells (by electrolyte leakage method), (ii) winter embolism sensitivity (by percentage loss of conductivity: PLC) and (iii) phenological variation of budburst (by thermal time to budburst). These ecophysiological traits were analyzed according to the potential altitudinal limit, which is highly related to frost exposure. Seasonal frost hardiness and PLC changes are relatively different across species. Maximal PLC observed in winter (PLCMax) was the factor most closely related to potential altitudinal limit. Moreover, PLCMax was related to the mean hydraulic diameter of vessels (indicating embolism sensitivity) and to osmotic compounds (indicating ability of living cells to refill xylem conducting elements). Winter embolism formation seems to be counterbalanced by active refilling from living cells. These results enabled us to model potential altitudinal limit according to three of the physiological/anatomical parameters studied. Monitoring different frost resistance strategies brings new insights to our understanding of the altitudinal limits of trees.

Cell physiology of plants growing in cold environments

The life of plants growing in cold extreme environments has been well investigated in terms of morphological, anatomical, and ecophysiological adaptations. In contrast, long-term cellular or metabolic studies have been performed by only a few groups. Moreover, a number of single reports exist, which often represent just a glimpse of plant behavior. The review draws together the literature which has focused on tissue and cellular adaptations mainly to low temperatures and high light. Most studies have been done with European alpine plants; comparably well studied are only two phanerogams found in the coastal Antarctic. Plant adaptation in northern polar regions has always been of interest in terms of ecophysiology and plant propagation, but nowadays, this interest extends to the effects of global warming. More recently, metabolic and cellular investigations have included cold and UV resistance mechanisms. Low-temperature stress resistance in plants from cold environments reflects the climate conditions at the growth sites. It is now a matter of molecular analyses to find the induced genes and their products such as chaperones or dehydrins responsible for this resistance. Development of plants under snow or pollen tube growth at 0 degrees C shows that cell biology is needed to explain the stability and function of the cytoskeleton. Many results in this field are based on laboratory studies, but several publications show that it is not difficult to study cellular mechanisms with the plants adapted to a natural stress. Studies on high light and UV loads may be split in two parts. Many reports describe natural UV as harmful for the plants, but these studies were mainly conducted by shielding off natural UV (as controls). Other experiments apply additional UV in the field and have had practically no negative impact on metabolism. The latter group is supported by the observations that green overwintering plants increase their flavonoids under snow even in the absence of UV. Thus, their defense and antioxidant role dominates. Ultrastructural comparisons were unable to find special light adaptations in plants taken from polar regions vs. high alpine species. The only adaptation found at the subcellular level for most alpine and polar plants are protrusions of the chloroplast envelopes. They are seen as a demand for fast membrane transport requiring additional membrane surface area, whereby the increase in stroma volume may help to support carbohydrate formation. Plants forming such protrusions have to cope with a short vegetation time. These observations are connected to the question as to how photosynthesis works quite well even at or under zero temperatures. The interplay between plastids, mitochondria, and peroxisomes, known as photorespiration, seems to be more intense than in lowland plants. This organelle cooperation serves as a valve for a surplus in solar energy input under cold conditions. Additional metabolic acclimations are under investigation, such as the role of an alternative plastid terminal oxidase. Plants from cold environments may also be seen as ideal objects for studying the combined effects of high light plus cold resistance-from the molecular level to the whole plant adaptation. Modern instrumentation makes it possible to perform vital metabolic measurements under outdoor conditions, and research stations in remote polar and alpine areas provide support for scientists in the preparation of samples for later cellular studies in the home laboratory.

Tracheid production phenology of Picea mariana and its relationship with climatic fluctuations and bud development using multivariate analysis

Research on cambium phenology in trees and its limiting factors in natural conditions is still at an early stage of development, restricting our capacity to precisely evaluate the effect of growing season length and climate fluctuations on tracheid production. The first objective of this paper was to describe cambial tracheid production phenology of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mills.) BSP). Repeated tree ring sampling was performed from 2002 to 2006 on four sites (48 degrees 13.78' N, 71 degrees 15.18' W; 48 degrees 51.92' N, 70 degrees 20.57' W; 49 degrees 43.92' N, 71 degrees 56.88' W; and 50 degrees 41.78' N, 72 degrees 11.03' W) representative of closed black spruce forest in Quebec, Canada. The timing of cambial initiation and cambial cessation in black spruce differs from year to year, the first occurring on 4 June on average, whereas the second occurs on 15 August. During a single year, these events do not vary significantly in space within the study area. The duration of cambial tracheid production does not vary significantly in either time or space. The second objective of this study was to identify the climatic factors that explain variations in initiation and cessation. Air temperature and humidity, soil temperature and water content, rain precipitations, snow cover as well as photosynthetically active radiation were monitored at each studied site. These were then used to create sets of candidate regressors to explain timing of phenological events. Timing of cambial initiation is primarily dependent on mean temperature between mid-March and initiation itself. Vapor pressure during this period is also important but in a negative way. A significant effect of the previous year's August soil and air temperature conditions suggests a link with spring bud activity resumption, an interpretation that is supported by an analysis significantly linking measured timing of bud break to cambial initiation. Cessation of cambial tracheid production is influenced by factors linked to photosynthesis during the period from mid-July to cessation. Those related to water status, namely saturation vapor pressure, soil water content and vapor pressure are particularly influential, but light intensity and soil temperature also have an effect. Also, because mid-July corresponds to the timing of bud set and because the previous late summer's soil temperature has a significant effect, a clear link is established with apical cessation.

Damage in needle tissues after infection with Chrysomyxa rhododendri increases cuticular conductance of Picea abies in winter

Chrysomyxa rhododendri is a rust which infects Picea abies growing near the alpine timberline. Attacked needles are normally shed, but few remain on shoots. We hypothesised that these needles increase transpiration of Picea during winter. Partly damaged, completely damaged and healthy needles of an infected tree as well as healthy needles of a resistant tree were compared in a microscopy analysis, and needle conductance of shoots was measured gravimetrically. Despite needle shedding, more than 6% of needles remaining on infected tree shoots were damaged. Partly damaged needles showed local brownish areas in the periphery and completely damaged needles necrotic parenchyma and epidermal tissues. Cuticular conductance of affected shoots was up to 25.23 +/- 2.75 mmol m(-2) s(-1) at moderate water potential and thus twofold higher than in the resistant tree. Needle shedding reduces negative effects of Chrysomyxa infections during summer, but remaining damaged needles impair tree water relations in winter.

The hydraulic architecture of Juniperus communis L. ssp. communis: shrubs and trees compared

Juniperus communis ssp. communis can grow like a shrub or it can develop a tree-like habit. In this study, the hydraulic architecture of these contrasting growth forms was compared. We analysed the hydraulic efficiency (leaf-specific conductivity, k(l); specific conductivity, k(s); Huber value, HV) and the vulnerability to cavitation (the water potential corresponding to a 50% loss of conductivity, Psi(50)), as well as anatomical parameters [mean tracheid diameter, d; mean hydraulic diameter, d(h); cell wall reinforcement (t/b)(h)(2)] of shrub shoots, tree stems and tree branches. Shrub shoots were similar to tree branches (especially to lower branches) in growth form and conductivity (k(l) = 1.93 +/- 0.11 m(2) s(-1) MPa(-1) 10(-7), k(s) = 5.71 +/- 0.19 m(2) s(-1) MPa(-1) 10(-4)), but were similar to tree stems in their vulnerability to cavitation (Psi(50) = -5.81 +/- 0.08 MPa). Tree stems showed extraordinarily high k(l) and k(s) values, and HV increased from the base up. Stem xylem was more vulnerable to cavitation than branch xylem, where Psi(50) increased from lower (Psi(50) = -6.44 +/- 0.19 MPa) to upper branches (Psi(50) = -5.98 +/- 0.13 MPa). Conduit diameters were correlated with k(l) and k(s). Data indicate that differences in hydraulic architecture correspond to changes in growth form. In some aspects, the xylem hydraulics of tree-like Juniperus communis differs from that of other coniferous tree species.
