Abstract
Tinea manuum is a superficial fungal infection affecting the hands, particularly the palms and interdigital areas. This retrospective study investigated clinical features, laboratory findings, treatment, and outcomes in patients with fungal hand infections at Siriraj Hospital between 2016 and 2020. Among 107 patients, representing 1.3% of those with fungal skin infections, 64.5% were male, with a mean age of 54.3 ± 18.5 years. Diabetes mellitus was present in 26.2%, and 23.4% had prior topical steroid use. The most common symptom was itching (75.7%), while palm-scale (85.9%) was the most prevalent clinical finding. Concurrent fingernail onychomycosis was observed in 43%, and 59.8% had additional fungal skin infections. Among 50 positive cultures, dermatophytes accounted for 86% and nondermatophytes for 14%, with Trichophyton rubrum (54%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex (24%) being the most frequent pathogens. Systemic antifungal treatment was administered to 57% of patients, with a mycological cure rate of 56.4%. A complete cure was achieved in 60.5% of dermatophyte infections but in none of the nondermatophyte cases (p = 0.003). These findings highlighted that tinea manuum could be caused by both dermatophytes and nondermatophytes, with significantly poorer outcomes observed in nondermatophyte infections. Concurrent fungal skin and nail infections should be evaluated for optimal management.

Abstract
Superficial mycoses of skin, nails and hair are among the common fungal infections. They are caused by dermatophytes, non-dermatophyte moulds, yeasts and yeast-like fungi. Such fungal infections are widespread all over the world and are predominant in tropical as well as subtropical regions. Environmental factors, such as warm, humid and pitiable hygienic conditions, are conducive for their growth and proliferation. Although it does not cause mortality, it is known to be associated with excessive morbidity which may be psychological or physical. This affects the quality of life of the infected individuals which leads to a negative impact on their occupational, emotional and social status. Such infections are increasing on a global scale and, therefore, are of serious concern worldwide. This review article covers the global and Indian scenario of superficial mycoses taking into account the historical background, aetiological agents, prevalence, cultural and environmental factors, risk factors, pathogenesis and hygienic practices for the prevention of superficial mycoses.

Abstract
Dermatophytes are a highly specialized group of keratinophilic and keratinolytic filamentous fungi causing a ringworm disease called dermatophytosis or superficial mycoses. Although dermatophyte infections do not threaten the host's life, they lower its quality in humans by causing discomfort related to cosmetic problems and through their epidemiological significance, whereas in farm animals they are responsible for economic losses and constitute a source of the spread of spores. Evidence from countless observational studies that have been conducted over the last 90 years indicates that dermatophytes infect humans of every age, race, gender and socioeconomic status with strikingly high rates, as well as both farmed and wild animals in various health conditions and with various epidemiological statuses. However, the prevalence of superficial fungal infections is highly variable, since it depends on several parameters associated with the infected individual and the dermatophyte, their mutual interactions, and epidemiological and geographical factors. The curious disparity in dermatophyte infection patterns has prompted many investigators to search for a link between the host, the host's predispositions and susceptibility to the disease, and the dermatophyte species and virulence. Thus, the question arises as to whether, in addition to the generally recognized factors predisposing hosts to diseases, there are some other predispositions to dermatophyte infections in a species-specific host. In this review, we describe recent findings about the mechanism of dermatophyte infections, focusing on the adaptation of the fungi to the host and conditions predisposing each side to the disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tinea manuum is considered in Italy as an uncommon infection, although no recent epidemiological data are available. METHODS In the period 2000-2018, we observed in the metropolitan area of Milan 18 patients with mycologically tinea manuum. RESULTS The infection was monolateral in all patients and characterised by erythema and scaling; in two patients, each vesicles and pustules were present. Two patients had also onychomycosis of one fingernail. No cases of simultaneous tinea pedis were observed. As far as the job of these patients is concerned, seven of them were masseurs, three barbers, two cattlemen, two masons, one car mechanic, one florist, one maid and one veterinarian. Trichophyton rubrum was isolated in 6 patients, Microsporum canis in 4, Trichophyton gypseum in 3, Trichophyton verrucosum in 3 and Trichophyton violaceum in 2 patients. CONCLUSION Masseurs were the most affected. Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis were the most frequent isolated dermatophytes.

Abstract
Trichophyton verrucosum is a zoophilic dermatophyte, known as a causative agent of inflammatory mycoses of the skin and the scalp in humans. In this study, we reviewed all cases of T. verrucosum infection diagnosed in our laboratory over a 12-year period, to determine epidemiological and clinical characteristics. Among 18,340 samples analyzed, 5,186 cultured positive with dermatophytes (2674 patients), of which 64 samples (41 patients) were positive for T. verrucosum. Our data show that there was a strong influence of age on the type of lesion, with children and adults presenting more frequently with tinea capitis and skin infections, respectively (P < .0001). Infection of children and adults resulted more frequently from indirect and direct exposure to cattle, respectively (P < .01). We observed a marked increase of cases over the last 4 years, with a correlation of the number of cases and the mean annual rainfall (P < .05), suggesting that increasing humidity favors cattle infection, and thereby, human infection. Whether this increase is the consequence of climate changes remains to be determined but should be considered.

Abstract
Dermatophytes evolve along with the geography and socioeconomic conditions. Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum audouinii and Trichophyton schoenleinii acted as the major pathogens of superficial fungal diseases 100 years ago, but their frequency decreased dramatically since the middle of the twentieth century and they are limited to some less-developed countries nowadays; meanwhile, frequency of Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton interdigitale, Trichophyton tonsurans and Microsporum canis increased gradually, and these fungi have become the major species globally. Some other dermatophytes, i.e., Trichophyton violaceum, Trichophyton verrucosum and Microsporum ferrugineum, are mainly endemic in some parts of Africa, Asia and Europe. At present, T. rubrum is the leading pathogen for skin and nail fungal infections, whereas M. canis, T. tonsurans and T. violaceum present as the predominant dermatophytes involved in tinea capitis. Population mobility, changes in human lifestyle and advents of antifungal drugs will continually drive the dermatophyte evolution in the skin microenvironment. Comprehensive observation is needed to better understand this kind of organisms and prospect the trends of their changes in future.

Abstract
Superficial fungal infections are most common in tropical and subtropical countries. In this study, 297 suspected superficial fungal infection cases were identified among 15,950 patients screened. The collected samples (skin, nail, and hair) were subjected to direct microscopy with potassium hydroxide and cultured on Sabourauds dextrose agar to identify the fungal species. The prevalence of superficial fungal infection was 27.6% (82/297), dermatophytosis was 75.6% (62/82), and non-dermatophytosis was 24.4% (20/82). Among the isolated dermatophytes, Trichophyton rubrum was the commonest species (79%) and Candida (60%) the commonest non-dermatophytic species. Tinea corporis was the commonest (78%) clinical presentation.

Abstract
AbstractThe aim of the study is to investigate the most frequent cause of superficial mycoses in patients from the territory of city Niš Southeast Serbia in the period from 1998 to 2010. A total of 3223 samples from 2887 patients with suspected dermatomycoses were examined. Superficial mycoses were diagnosed using standard microbiology techniques (conventional microscopy and cultivation). Dermatophytes were determined on the basis of their macroscopic and microscopic morphological and morphometric characteristics. Morphometric characteristics were obtained by Laboratory Universal Computer Image Analysis system (Lucia M, 1996). Species of genus Candida were identified using the test of production of germ tube in sera, by growth on comertial chromatogen medium (Chromotogenic Candida, Liofichem/Bacteriology products, Italy) and by using Auxacolor TMBioRad, France. The results were elaborated with the statistical method of descriptive and quantitative analysis (SPSS 14.0 for Windows 2003). The prevalence of superficial mycoses was 25,1%. Dermatophytes were identified in 67.6% of all positive cultures. Microsporum canis was the most prevalent (50.3%) dermatophyte isolated, followed by Trichophyton metagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (35.4%). Yeast genus Candida has become a more frequent cause of superficial fungal infection since 2001. and C. albicans was the dominant yeast (61.1%).

Abstract
A total of 555 specimens from 372 patients with symptoms compatible with superficial mycosis were included in this study. Those from patients clinically diagnosed as having dermatomycosis were thoroughly investigated by mycological examinations in the laboratory, including microscopic studies of KOH mounts and cultivation of the samples in culture. The results of this study and a previous study in our hospital conducted in 1980 were compared with respect to clinical presentation and etiological agents. Onychomycosis was the most common clinical form of dermatomycoses, and Trichophyton rubrum was the most common pathogen in this study.

Abstract
Considerable changes in the dermatophyte spectrum have been observed in the past century. Hence, many authors point out the necessity of performing periodical overviews of the mycological flora producing mycoses in humans in a given area. Analysis of dermatophyte species was performed, which were isolated from the lesions in patients suspected of superficial mycosis and referred to the Department of Mycology. The materials were isolated from patients suspected of superficial mycosis from Kraków region from January 1, 1972 through December 31, 2007. A total of 4983 dermatophyte strains were isolated from 23 124 specimens, which amounts to 21.5%. The percentage of dermatophytes isolated in the past decade decreased to 13.1% in the year 2007. Trichophyton rubrum outnumbered Trichophyton mentagrophytes during the entire survey period: 62.4 vs. 33.5%. The participation of Microsporum canis amounted to 1.71% and that of Epidermophyton floccosum to 1.32%. The species M. canis appeared by the end of the 1980s. The remaining dermatophyte species comprised 1% of the isolates. A considerable decrease in dermatophyte isolations has been observed since 2000. Trichophyton rubrum outnumbered T. mentagrophytes during the entire period of study. The percentages of T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes are decreasing while the percentages of other dermatophytes are slowly increasing.

Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm) is the most common dermatophyte infection of the scalp affecting mainly children and rarely adults. The epidemiology of tinea capitis varies within different geographical areas throughout the world. It may occur sporadically or epidemically and an increase in its incidence has been noted over the last few decades. The aim of the study is to obtain a general overview of the current state and changing pattern of tinea capitis in Europe. According to the literature, there has been a significant increase in the incidence of tinea capitis and a change in the pattern of infectious agents in particular. Microsporum canis, a zoophilic dermatophyte, is still the most common reported causative agent of tinea capitis in Europe. The countries reporting the highest incidence of M. canis infections are mainly in the Mediterranean but also bordering countries like Austria, Hungary, Germany and Poland. Besides the increase in Microsporum-induced tinea capitis, there is a shift towards anthrophilic tinea capitis mainly in urban areas in Europe. The largest overall increase with anthropophilic dermatophytes has been noted with Trichophyton tonsurans mainly in the UK and with Trichophyton soudanense and Microsporum audouinii in France. The occurrence of anthropophilic infections seems to be geographically restricted and is possibly linked to the immigration from African countries. Children (aged 3-7 years with no predilection of gender) remain the most commonly affected, but recently an increase of tinea capitis has been observed in adults and in the elderly. The results of the study clearly demonstrate the importance of diagnosing and proper treatment of mycotic scalp infection in the Europe. If not diagnosed and treated properly, its prevalence might reach epidemic proportions in the near future. Therefore, an increased level of surveillance (screening in schools), and a highly effective interdisciplinary cooperation among general practitioners, mycologists, veterinarians and dermatologists are strongly recommended.

Abstract
Infections of the skin, hair and nails by dermatophyte fungi are common in developed and developing countries alike. However, the species involved and the resulting clinical entities vary both geographically and with time. We have surveyed 15,333 dermatophytes obtained from primary isolations at the Mycology Reference Laboratory, Bristol, UK from 1980 through 2005. Several striking trends in dermatophyte prevalence were apparent over this period. The relative frequencies of isolations of Microsporum canis (cat and dog ringworm), Trichophyton verrucosum (cattle ringworm), T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (rodent ringworm) and Epidermophyton floccosum (a cause of human groin and foot infections) all decreased by 90%. Conversely, the contributions of T. tonsurans and T. violaceum (two anthropophilic scalp-infecting species) to total dermatophyte isolations increased by 1000% over the same period. Finally, T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale, the two common causes of foot infection comprised 80% of all dermatophytes isolated in 1980 and 90% of isolations in 2005. Similar trends in dermatophyte prevalence were evidenced throughout the British Isles, based on the voluntary reporting of isolations from a large number of British laboratories at 5-yearly intervals over the same period. The implications of these changing patterns of dermatophyte species, and the clinical entities they produce are discussed in the context of a review of worldwide dermatophyte isolations over the last three decades, with emphasis on the causal agents of tinea capitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Modifications in social habits together with the increase of emigration have contributed not only to increased dermatophytoses but also to an altered etiology. During the last few years, Braga has suffered a radical change from a rural to a cosmopolitan life-style. METHODS A statistical study of dermatophytoses and the etiology of their causative agents was performed by a retrospective survey carried out among patients of Hospital de São Marcos, Braga, Portugal, from 1983-2002. In this study, a total of 10,003 patients were analyzed. RESULTS Over this period the frequency of dermatophytoses, as defined by the recovery of a dermatophyte in culture, was found to be 23.6%, whereas nondermatophytic infections accounted for 7.0%. Analysis of the clinical forms and the isolated fungi supports that the dermatophyte species have a predilection for certain body areas (P <or= 0.01). Age is a very important factor regarding the occurrence of dermatophytoses (P <or= 0.0001), with a correlation between increasing age and infection, positive for Trichophyton rubrum and negative for Microsporum canis. Overall the gender of the patients is not an association factor for the development of dermatophytoses; however, significant differences were detected in the distribution of some etiologic agents (P <or= 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results showed the main etiologic agent of dermatophytoses to be Trichophyton rubrum (37.4%). Moreover, dermatophytoses are both decreasing and showing a new profile in Braga, and a pronounced decrease of Trichophyton megninii was observed throughout the study.

Abstract
Trichophyton verrucosum is a zoophilic infectious agent causing 98% of the dermatophytic infections of cattle. Transmission to humans has, until recently, been rare. One reason for an increase of infection in humans and animals seems to be the decrease in immunisation of cattle. We report on three cases of pertinent human infections with disseminated, sharply defined, bluish red, partly oedematous nodules and plaques in particular not only on the thighs, but also on the trunk and arms. Two of our patients work with farm animals. The third one works as an assistant in a butcher shop, but lives on a cow farm. All three patients are often exposed to the cold. In all three cases T. verrucosum was detected by culture. Tinea corporis was histologically confirmed in two patients. Based on the microbiological results, we began a combined systemic and local antimycotic therapy with fluconazole 50 mg day(-1) in two patients, itraconazole 100 mg day(-1) in one patient p.o. combined with topical ciclopiroxolamine. All patients were cured. Dermatophytosis caused by T. verrucosum can, under certain circumstances, such as frequent exposure to cold or a long-term corticosteroid therapy, mimic the characteristic clinical picture of perniosis, as we demonstrate here.

Abstract
This study was conducted on the primary school students in Ceyhan district of Adana, Turkey between May and June 2002 to determine the clinical form, causative agents and prevalence of tinea capitis. A total of 9576 students, with a male-to-female ratio of 50.6-49.4% were screened in 24 primary schools. Tinea capitis superficialis was diagnosed in seven cases, and kerion Celsi in one. Among eight cases, there were seven boys and one girl. Trichophyton violaceum was the most frequent causative agent, followed by T. tonsurans, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis and M. gypseum.

Abstract
Summary The authors report a case of bullous tinea pedis caused by Trichophyton violaceum with dermatophytid reaction in a 26-year-old woman who had been in Africa. Diagnosis was based on mycological examination (direct microscope observation and culture). Recovery was achieved after systemic antimycotic therapy with itraconazole and topical imidazole for a month.

Abstract
We studied dermatophyte infections in patients, examined in the Mycological Laboratory of the Department of Dermatology, University Medical Centre Ljubljana during the period 1995-2002. A total of 42,494 samples were collected from 33,974 patients suspected to have dermatomycosis. Dermatophytes were identified in 8286 (71.2%) positive cultures. Microsporum canis was the most frequent dermatophyte isolated (46.8%), followed by Trichophyton rubrum (36.7%), T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (7.9%) and T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (4.9%). Less frequently isolated were M. gypseum, T. verrucosum, Epidermophyton floccosum, T. tonsurans and T. violaceum. The most common dermatophyte infections included tinea corporis, onychomycosis, tinea pedis and tinea faciei. Zoophilic dermatophytes were most commonly recovered from children and adolescents with tinea capitis, tinea corporis and tinea faciei. Anthropophilic species were identified mostly in adults with tinea pedis, onychomycosis and tinea inguinalis. During the period studied, we recorded a decline in the rate of M. canis infections, while infections produced by T. rubrum increased in frequency.

Abstract
In the 5-years period, 1996-2000, 1045 children under 13 years old were examined for suspected dermatomycosis. In 611 cases fungi were isolated. Male children were mainly affected on the scalp and body area. Girls were more affected in the location of the arms and legs. There was a greater proportion of cases in the age range 2-12 years. The most prominent fungus was Microsporum canis (515 cases) followed by Trichophyton rubrum (34) and Candida albicans (20). Tinea capitis (280 cases) mainly caused by M. canis (276 cases) was the most common clinical form. Tinea corporis (109 cases) mainly caused by M. canis (88 cases), C. albicans (10 cases) and T. rubrum (seven cases) was the second most frequent clinical form.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the epidemiology of dermatophyte infections in Split and Dalmatia County, Croatia, between 1996 and 2002. Of 5792 samples 1318 (23.8%) were positive. Tinea corporis and tinea cruris were the most common types of dermatophytoses. Microsporum canis (36.5%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (24.8%), and T. rubrum (21.5%) were the main etiologic factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis is the most common mycosis of the scalp in preschool and school-aged children in Greece. OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy, safety and tolerability of an 8-week course of oral terbinafine at different doses. METHODS Patients received oral terbinafine at doses ranging from 3.3 to 12.5 mg/kg/day for 8 weeks, as follows: group A, terbinafine 3.3 to </= 6.0 mg/kg/day (40 patients); group B, terbinafine > 6.0 to 7.0 mg/kg/day (23 patients); group C, terbinafine > 7.0 to 12.5 mg/kg/day (37 patients). Fungal microscopy and cultures were performed 4 weeks before the start of the treatment, at the end of the treatment (week 8) and at a follow-up visit at week 16. RESULTS At week 8 mycological cure was achieved in one patient (2.7%) in group A, in 21 patients (91.3%) in group B and in 34 patients (97.1%) in group C. At week 16 mycological cure was achieved in one patient (2.7%) in group A, in 22 patients (95.7%) in group B and in 35 patients (100%) in group C. There was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.0005) between dose level and efficacy of terbinafine at the end of the treatment period and also at the follow-up visit at week 16. Five patients (three in group A and two in group C) discontinued treatment because of adverse events. CONCLUSIONS The administration of terbinafine at a dose of either 6-7 or 7-12.5 mg/kg/day for 8 weeks is safe and effective for the treatment in children of tinea capitis caused by M. canis.

Abstract
The frequency of dermatomycoses as well as the spectrum of causative agents in the Rijeka area, northwestern part of Croatia, in the periods before and during the war (1990-1994) and in the postwar period (1995-1999) were analyzed. A total of 20 463 patients with clinically suspected dermatomycoses referred to the Department of Dermatovenerology, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, was examined. In the period from 1990 till 1994, 2462 samples were positive, compared with 2250 positive samples during the period from 1995 to 1999. The most frequently isolated dermatophytes were in both periods Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis, followed by Microsporum gypseum, Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton verrucosum and in the first period T. rubrum. An intensive change in composition of the flora was observed in the postwar period, mainly connected to the migration of population from other regions to the Rijeka area. This was demonstrated by a disappearance of T. verrucosum and T. rubrum and by an eruptive occurrence of Trichophyton violaceum. This antropophilic species became third representative in the postwar period, followed by M. gypseum, and E. floccosum. Our data were compared with those obtained in the same area in previous studies, and with results obtained in other countries.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated epidemiological and clinical aspects of dermatophyte foot infections among employees of one dairy product company located in Kanagawa prefecture in central Japan. Sixty-nine of 377 subjects were reported having "athlete's foot" in response to a simple questionnaire. A subsequent mycological examination revealed 41 untreated patients with tinea pedis and/or tinea unguium (89% of subjects examined) and the overall prevalence was estimated at 18%. Comparing severity scores of five clinical symptoms (itching, erythema, vesicles/pustules, erosion/maceration, and scales) between those untreated patients within the subjects and another group of patients who spontaneously attended dermatological clinics to treat tinea pedis, itching, erythema, and total score were significantly higher in the latter group.

Abstract
A total of 576 dermatophytes were isolated from patients with a variety of skin infections from January 1993 to May 2000. Ten species of dermatophytes were identified: Epidermophyton floccosum (0.7%), Microsporum audouinii (1.1%), M. canis (3.1%), M. gypseum (0.3%), Trichophyton concentricum (3.5%), T. equinum (0.2%), T. mentagrophytes (36.1%), T. rubrum (53.8%), T. verrucosum (0.2) and T. violaceum (1.0%). The body sites most frequently affected by dermatophytes were the buttocks, nails and trunk. Anthropophilic dermatophytes made up 60.1% of the isolates; the most common species was T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes and M. canis were the two main zoophilic dermatophytes. T. mentagrophytes was isolated from all body sites except the scalp. M. canis was found to be associated with domestic dogs and was not isolated from ethnic Malays. The only geophilic dermatophyte was M. gypseum, an uncommon dermatophyte associated with tinea pedis.

Abstract
A deep absceding infection is reported of the inframandibular part of the face of a 22-year-old male student due to a zoophilic strain of Trichophyton interdigitale. The fungus was probably acquired from the cat of the patient. Initial therapy by a general practitioner was with topical glucocorticoids and oral antihistaminica. The patient developed a severe phlegmoneous inflammation of the bearded part of the face. Later, the patient was successfully treated by a combination of itraconazole and fluconazole. Identification of the species was confirmed by light and scanning microscopy as well as sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal DNA.

Abstract
Tinea capitis is a common cutaneous fungal infection in US school children, but adults may be carriers of tinea pathogens in the scalp. However, few cases of actual tinea capitis in adults have been reported in the literature. A retrospective analysis of all adult patients with positive scalp fungal cultures from June 1997 to March 2000 were reviewed. Seventy-nine cases of tinea capitis were identified. Nine (11.4%) were adults, 7 of whom were African American women, who were an average of 46 years old (range, 25 to 64 years). Three of these patients had prior exposure to a child with tinea capitis. These results suggest that tinea capitis affects adult African Americans, particularly women. Widespread scalp culture is indicated for papulosquamous disease and alopecia in this segment of the population.

Abstract
Over a 12-year period, from 1987 to 1998, the spectrum of aetiological agents isolated from 11208 patients (6265 females and 4943 males) suspected of having dermatomycosis was analysed in the mycological laboratory of the Department of Dermatology, Charles University, Prague. The most frequently examined locations were toenails (34.9%), feet (15.6%), fingernails (12.8%), toe webs (11%), trunk (10%) and hands (8.7%). Dermatophytes were isolated from 5605 (30.2%) of all 18528 samples examined. Among dermatophytes, the most common infectious agent was Trichophyton rubrum (90.2%) followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes (6.6%), Microsporum canis (1.8%) and Epidermophyton floccosum (1.4%). Trichophyton verrucosum, Microsporum persicolor and Microsporum gypseum were rare. During this 12-year period the pattern of aetiological agents of dermatomycoses in Prague was relatively stable.

Abstract
A clinico-mycological study of 100 cases of dermatophytosis was done in the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in the eastern region of Nepal. The incidence of dermatophytoses in this study was 4.54% with a M: F ratio of 2.5: 1. The commonest age group was 11-20 years old. A single clinical type was found in 68%; 32% had two or more clinical types. The study revealed tinea corporis (43%) as the most common clinical type followed by tinea cruris (33%) and tinea pedis (20%). Positive culture was obtained in 94% of cases. A total of eight different species of dermatophytes were isolated with T. rubrum (45.74%) as the most common species followed by T. mentagrophytes (26.6%), T. tonsurans (11.7%), M. audouinii (8.36%), E. floccosum (4.26%), T. schoenlenii (2.13%), T. violaceum (2.13%) and T. verrucosum (1.06%).

Abstract
We describe 45 cases of dermatophytosis due to Trichophyton violaceum diagnosed in Tuscany from 1985 to 1997. Diagnosis was based on direct microscope mycological examination and culture. Nine of the 45 patients were Italian, eight of whom were born and resident in Tuscany; the others were Africans who contracted the infection in their country of origin. The first case in a non-European was observed in 1985, but since 1991 isolation from foreigners has become more frequent. The increase in cases of infection by T. violaceum in our region is certainly linked to immigration. The cases of epidermomycosis in Tuscans suggests that the fungus has already become autochthonous.

Abstract
The case of a 42-year-old father is presented with 6 weeks' history of a painful kerion-like sycosis barbae. His two children had suffered from tinea manus 3 months previously, also caused by the zoophilic fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes probably acquired from guinea-pigs. Seemingly ignoring the pathogenetic link, oral antibacterial treatment had been the first therapeutic attempt initiated by the family physician. Finally, successful treatment was performed by means of oral application of fluconazole 50 mg daily for a period of 6 weeks.

Abstract
Both, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are multifactorial diseases with an unknown pathogenesis. To elucidate the influence of fungal infections in the onset or recurrence of those inflammatory skin disease we determined the frequencies of Candida and dermatophyte infections of the skin and orointestinal tract concomitantly seen in patients with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. We analyzed the files of more than 40,000 in-patients of the Department of Dermatology, Kiel. Sex- and age-adjusted relative risk were calculated. The results demonstrate that patients with psoriasis (N = 3006) presented with a decreased rate of tinea. This was significant for tinea corporis (RR = 0.13, p < 0.01). Candida infections of the skin were seen more often in psoriasis patients compared to controls. Differentiating between Type I (early onset) and Type II (late onset) psoriasis only Type I psoriasis patients presented with decreased dermatophyte infections and increased Candida colonization of the intestinum. However, patients with Type II psoriasis demonstrated an increased rate of candidosis cutis and candidosis oris as compared to controls. Patients with atopic dermatitis (N = 1808) displayed a decreased overall incidence of tinea and Candida infections. Furthermore, in patients with atopic dermatitis a Candida colonization of the orointestinal tract was found elevated (RR = 1.51, p < 0.01), whereas tinea corporis (RR = 0.24, p < 0.01) and candidosis cutis (RR = 0.30, p < 0.001) was found decreased compared to controls. Our results show that the influence of fungal infections on the two skin diseases investigated is not as strong as often considered. The increased relative risk in patients with atopic dermatitis to present with Candida colonization in the digestive tract or vice versa may contribute to the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis.
