Fracture Strength and Fatigue Resistance of All-Ceramic Molar Crowns Manufactured with CADCAM Technology

Vertical marginal gap and internal fit of virgilite-based lithium disilicate glass ceramic veneers with different preparation designs

PURPOSE

To evaluate and compare internal fit and marginal adaptation of conventional lithium disilicate (LDS) glass ceramics and LDS containing virgilite computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) blocks before and after aging.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Seventy-two epoxy replicated dies from two prepared maxillary right central incisors acrylic typodont were divided into two groups of different preparation designs (n = 36): Group I, incisal butt-joint, and Group P, incisal overlap. Each group was further subdivided into two equal groups according to ceramic material (n = 18): Group E, IPS e.max CAD, and Group T, Tessera advanced lithium disilicate (ALD) CAD-CAM blocks. The replica technique was used to assess the internal fit using a stereomicroscope at 45× magnification. Laminate veneers were cemented to their corresponding epoxy dies, then the vertical marginal gap was evaluated before and after thermal cycling. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for marginal fit data and 2-way ANOVA for internal fit measurements (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

For internal fit, there were no significant differences between tested groups. For vertical marginal gap results, two-way ANOVA showed that only aging had a significant effect on the vertical marginal gap (p < 0.001), while different CAD-CAM materials and preparation designs did not affect the vertical marginal gap.

CONCLUSIONS

The vertical marginal gap and internal fits of IPS e.max CAD and CEREC Tessera CAD for both preparation designs were comparable. Aging significantly affected the vertical marginal gap of the laminate veneers of both materials and both preparation designs; however, all were within clinically acceptable ranges before and after aging.

Comparison of Dental Zirconium Oxide Ceramics Produced Using Additive and Removal Technology for Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry-Strength and Surface Tests: An In Vitro Study

BACKGROUND

The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the mechanical and functional properties of zirconium oxide ceramics made using 3D printing technology and ceramics produced using conventional dental milling machines.

METHODS

Forty zirconia samples were prepared for this study: the control group consisted of 20 samples made using milling technology, and the test group consisted of 20 samples made using 3D printing technology. Their surface parameters were measured, and then their mechanical parameters were checked and compared. Density, hardness, flexural strength and compressive strength were tested by performing appropriate in vitro tests. After the strength tests, a comparative analysis of the geometric structure of the surfaces of both materials was performed again. Student's t-test was used to evaluate the results (p < 0.01).

RESULTS

Both ceramics show comparable values of mechanical parameters, and the differences are not statistically significant. The geometric structure of the sample surfaces looks very similar. Only minor changes in the structure near the crack were observed in the AM group.

CONCLUSION

Ceramics made using additive technology have similar mechanical and surface parameters to milled zirconium oxide, which is one of the arguments for the introduction of this material into clinical practice. This in vitro study has shown that this ceramic can compete with zirconium made using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) methods.

The effect of cyclic loading on the fracture resistance of 3D-printed and CAD/CAM milled zirconia crowns-an in vitro study

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cyclic mechanical loading on the fracture resistance of 3D-printed zirconia crowns in comparison to milled zirconia crowns.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Monolithic zirconia crowns (n = 30) were manufactured using subtractive milling (group M) and 3D additive printing (group P). Nine samples of each group were fractured under one-time loading while the other 6 samples were subjected to cyclic loading for 1.2 million cycles before being subjected to one-time loading until fracture. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) fractographic analysis was carried out on fractured fragments of representative samples.

RESULTS

The mean for fracture resistance of group M was 1890 N without cyclic loading and 1642 N after being subjected to cyclic loading, and they were significantly higher than that of group P (1658 N and 1224 N respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

The fabrication technique and cyclic loading affect the fracture resistance of zirconia crowns. Although the fracture resistance values for the 3D-printed crowns were lower than those of the milled, still they are higher than the masticatory forces and thus could be considered being clinically acceptable.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Concerning fracture resistance, 3D-printed crowns can withstand the masticatory forces for the long term without any cracks or failure.

Comparative Effect of No Finish Line, Heavy Chamfer, and Shoulder Marginal Designs on the Fracture Resistance of Zirconia (Cercon) Ceramic Restoration: An In Vitro Study

Background Because all-ceramic crowns are more aesthetic and biocompatible than metal-ceramic crowns, they have grown in popularity among patients and dentists. Poor finish line layout can result in restoration margin fracturing, hence, finish line arrangement is critical to maintaining the restoration's marginal integrity. The goal of this in-vitro study is to evaluate zirconia's resistance to fracture (Cercon) ceramic restorations with three marginal designs (no finish line, heavy chamfer, and shoulder). This study is important in contributing to the ongoing debate about the optimal finish line design for zirconia restorations. Methodology Three different finish lines, namely, biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) with a marginal width of less than 0.3 mm, heavy chamfer with a marginal width of up to 0.3 mm, and shoulder with a marginal width greater than 0.3 mm, were made on 10 extracted maxillary first premolar tooth to make 30 epoxy resin dies on which zirconia (Cercon) coping was done using CAD/CAM technology, and marginal discrepancies were measured using a three-dimensional scanner. All the copings were affixed to their respective dies using GIC luting cement, and fracture resistance was measured using a digital universal testing machine. Results The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that the mean fracture resistance was more in the heavy chamfer finish line, followed by the no finish line (BOPT) and the shoulder finish line. No statistically significant difference was seen between the no finish line and the heavy chamfer finish line. There was a significant difference between the heavy chamfer and shoulder finish lines (p = 0.004). Conclusions To increase the biomechanical performance of posterior single zirconia restorations, heavy chamfer margins are indicated.

How does the occlusal contact region influence the mechanical fatigue performance and fracture region of monolithic lithium disilicate ceramic crowns?

OBJECTIVE

To characterize the effect of the occlusal contact region on the mechanical fatigue performance and on the fracture region of monolithic lithium disilicate ceramic crowns.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Monolithic lithium disilicate ceramic crowns were machined in a CAD/CAM system and adhesively luted onto glass-fiber reinforced epoxy resin preparations with resin cement. The crowns were divided into three groups (n = 16) according to load application region (cusp tip: restricted to cusp tips; cusp plane: restricted to cuspal inclined plane; or mixed: associating tip cusp and cuspal inclined plane). The specimens were submitted to a cyclic fatigue test (initial load: 200 N; step-size: 100 N; cycles/step: 20,000; loading frequency: 20 Hz; load applicator: 6 mm or 40 mm diameter stainless steel) until observing cracks (1st outcome) and fracture (2nd outcome). The data were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier + Mantel-Cox post-hoc tests for both outcomes (cracks and fracture). Finite element analysis (FEA), occlusal contact region, contact radii measurements, and fractographic analyzes were performed.

RESULTS

The mixed group presented worse fatigue mechanical behavior (550 N / 85.000 cycles) compared to the cuspal inclined plane group (656 N / 111,250 cycles) (p < 0.05) for the first crack outcome, while the cusp tip group was similar to both groups (588 N / 97,500 cycles) (p > 0.05). The mixed group had the worst fatigue behavior (1413 N / 253,029 cycles) in relation to the other groups (Cusp tip: 1644 N / 293,312 cycles; Cuspal inclined plane: 1631 N / 295,174 cycles) considering the crown fracture outcome (p < 0.05). FEA showed higher tensile stress concentration areas just below the load application region. In addition, loading on the cuspal inclined plane induced a higher tensile stress concentration in the groove region. The most prevalent type of crown fracture was the wall fracture. Groove fracture was observed in 50% of the loading specimens exclusively on the cuspal inclined plane.

CONCLUSION

Load application on distinct occlusal contact regions affects the stress distribution pattern and consequently the mechanical fatigue performance and fracture region of the monolithic lithium disilicate ceramic crowns. A combination of loading at distinct regions is recommended to promote better evaluation of the fatigue behavior of a restored set.

Fatigue Resistance of 3-Unit CAD-CAM Ceramic Fixed Partial Dentures: An FEA Study

PURPOSE

To estimate the fatigue life of 3-unit molar fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made from two different monolithic ceramic systems, zirconia cercon (ZC) and lithium disilicate (LD). The effect of the connector size on the fatigue resistance of the monolithic FPD was also investigated.

METHODS

Two models for the FPDs were built, a 3-unit all-ceramic and a porcelain-fused-to-metal. The porcelain-fused-to-metal FPD model was used as the control. Actual 3-unit FPDs (replacing the second lower premolar) were constructed using a computer aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system. Finite element analysis (FEA) was executed. A hemispherical indenter was used to simulate occlusal load. The occlusal load phase of the chewing cycle was applied at the premolar pontic.

RESULTS

The failure location for the monolithic FPD was always located at the distal connector. Connector size played a key role in determining the long-term survival of the prosthesis. The fatigue resistance was predicted to be 670 N for the ZC with a connector size 4 × 3 mm, while it was only 226 N for LD. As for porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), FEA predicts that fatigue resistance can reach up to 770 N. Under the cyclic load of 670 N, the fatigue life for the zirconia FPD with connector size 4 × 3 mm was 2.23 × 10⁶ cycles while it survived only 3.1 × 10⁵ cycles when the connector was reduced to 3.5 × 2.5 mm. The angle of the oblique load has a significant effect on the stress distribution.

CONCLUSION

3-unit monolithic FPDs made of ZC have superior fatigue performance compared to those made of LD. The fatigue life of the zirconia FPD was about three times longer than that made of LD with a connector size of 4 mm × 3 mm. The survival rates of ZC FPDs are comparable to porcelain-fused-to-metal. A significant reduction in fatigue strength is predicted for reduced connector size. Therefore, it is necessary to establish general guidelines for the minimum connector size.

Overview of Several Typical Ceramic Materials for Restorative Dentistry

With the development of ceramic technology, prosthodontic ceramics are becoming a useful option for improving esthetic outcomes in dentistry. In this paper, various ceramic materials were reviewed and evaluated, and their advantages and disadvantages and indications in oral prosthodontics were analyzed objectively. The properties of resin-based ceramics, polycrystalline ceramics, and silicate ceramics were compared and analyzed. Resin-based ceramics may replace other ceramic materials in the CAD/CAM field.

Fatigue Resistance of Cast-on Implant Abutment Fabricated with Three Different Alloys

OBJECTIVES

 This study aimed to evaluate fatigue resistance of cast-on implant abutment using three alloys.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Forty specimens of implant-supported crowns were prepared; Group 1 (TA) stock titanium abutments, Group 2 (GS) abutment cast with 40% gold alloy, Group 3 (GP) abutment cast with palladium alloy, and Group 4 (CN) abutment cast with nickel-chromium alloy. Specimens were cyclic loaded at 20 Hz, starting from 200 N (5,000 cycles), followed by stepwise loading of 400, 600, 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,400, 1,600, and 1,800 N (30,000 cycles/step). Specimens were loaded until failure or reached 245,000 cycles.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 The withstand cycles were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Weibull survival analysis. Fracture surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy.

RESULTS

 The results of withstand cycles were TA (189,883 ± 22,734), GS (195,028 ± 22,371), GP (187,662 ± 22,555), and CN (200,350 ± 30,851). The statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.673).

CONCLUSION

 Although CN has higher Weibull characteristic strength which means greater durability, its lower Weibull modulus demonstrated less structural reliability. Consistent failures at implant fixture level were also found in CN group.

Fracture Resistance in Non-Vital Teeth: Absence of Interproximal Ferrule and Influence of Preparation Depth in CAD/CAM Endocrown Overlays-An In Vitro Study

There is ample evidence to support the use of endocrowns to restore endodontic teeth. However, the influence of the position of the interproximal margins on fracture strength has not yet been studied. The aim was to determine the relationship between the apicocoronal position of the interproximal restorative margins and fracture resistance in nonvital teeth restored with CAD/CAM endocrown overlays. Forty extracted human maxillary premolars were prepared for endocrown overlay restorations without ferrule on the interproximal aspects and classified according to the position of the interproximal restoration margins in relation to the alveolar crest: 2 mm (group A), 1 mm (group B), 0.5 mm (group C), and 0 mm (group D). Fracture strength was measured using a universal testing machine applying a compressive force to the longitudinal tooth axis. Group A had a mean fracture resistance of 859.61 (±267.951) N, group B 1053.9 (±333.985) N, group C 1124.6 (±291.172) N, and group D 780.67 (±183.269) N, with statistical differences between groups. Group C had the highest values for fracture strength compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). The location of the interproximal margins appears to influence the fracture resistance of CAD/CAM endocrown overlays. A distance of 0.5 mm between the interproximal margin and the alveolar crest was associated with increased fracture resistance.

Effect of occlusal anatomy of CAD/CAM feldspathic posterior crowns in the stress concentration and fracture load

OBJECTIVES

This study evaluated the effect of restoration occlusal design on the maximum fracture load and stress distribution of a feldspathic ceramic crown.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty dentin analogues were used to simulate a full-crown preparation. Next, 20 feldspathic crowns were milled according to the occlusal design parameter available in the CAD database (Young or Adult). The crowns were cemented with dual cure resin-cement and loaded until fracture at 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). The same geometry and experimental setup was modeled and exported to the computer aided engineering software and tensile stress concentration was calculated using the finite element method with 300 N occlusal load simulation.

RESULTS

The occlusal anatomy significantly influenced the load-to-fracture (p < 0.05). Adult design showed higher mean values (1149 ± 201 N) than Young design (454 ± 77 N). The maximum principal stress criteria showed similar stress pattern for both designs, however, the highest stress concentration was calculated for Young design (91 MPa) in the occlusal surface.

CONCLUSIONS

An anatomy design with reduced cusp angulation and less evident occlusal sulcus can reduce the stress concentration and increase the fracture load for feldspathic CAD/CAM posterior crowns.

Effect of three different veneering techniques on the stress distribution and in vitro fatigue behavior of core-veneer all-ceramic fixed partial dentures

Background. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of the veneering technique on the tensile stress distribution and survival of full-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Methods. A three-dimensional model of an FDP was modeled on a second premolar and a second molar with a pontic between them for finite element analysis (FEA). The groups were divided according to the veneering technique: conventional stratification, rapid layer, and CAD-on techniques. A mesh control test determined the number of elements and nodes. The materials' properties were attributed to each solid component with isotropic, homogeneous, and linear elastic behavior. For the in vitro fatigue test (n=30), the FDPs were cemented on dentin analog abutments and submitted to 2×10⁶ mechanical cycles (100 N at 3 Hz). Results. Maximum principal stress showed that the connector between the pontic and the second molar concentrated higher stresses, regardless of the techniques: Rapid layer (6 MPa) > CAD-on (5.5 MPa) > conventional stratification (4 MPa). The conventional stratification technique concentrated high stresses at the interface between the framework and veneering ceramic (2 MPa), followed by the rapid layer (1.8 MPa) and CAD-on (1.5 MPa) techniques. The crowns fabricated using the rapid layer and CAD-on techniques exhibited a 100% survival rate, while the conventional stratification group had 0% survival. Conclusion. Even with similar stress distribution between the veneering techniques, the conventional stratification technique was more prone to failure under fatigue due to higher defects incorporated than CAD-on and rapid layer techniques.

Evaluation of Marginal/Internal Fit and Fracture Load of Monolithic Zirconia and Zirconia Lithium Silicate (ZLS) CAD/CAM Crown Systems

Fit accuracy and fracture strength of milled monolithic zirconia (Zi) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) crowns are important parameters determining the success of these restorations. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the marginal and internal fit of monolithic Zi and ZLS crowns, along with the fracture load, with and without mechanical aging. Thirty-two stone dies acquired from a customized master metal molar die were scanned, and ceramic crowns (16 Zi Ceramill Zolid HT⁺ and 16 ZLS Vita Suprinity) were designed and milled. Absolute marginal discrepancies (AMD), marginal gaps (MG), and internal gaps (IG) of the crowns, in relation to the master metal die, were evaluated using x-ray nanotomography (n = 16). Next, thirty-two metal dies were fabricated based on the master metal die, and crowns (16 Zi; 16 ZLS) cemented and divided into four groups of eight each; eight Zi with mechanical aging (MA), eight Zi without mechanical aging (WMA), eight ZLS (MA), and eight ZLS (WMA). Two groups of crowns (Zi-MA; ZLS-MA) were subjected to 500,000 mechanical cycles (200 ± 50 N, 10 Hz) followed by axial compressive strength testing of all crowns, until failure, and the values were recorded. Independent sample t tests (α = 0.05) revealed no significant differences between Zi and ZLS crowns (p > 0.05); for both internal and marginal gaps, however, there were significant differences in AMD (p < 0.005). Independent samples Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests revealed significant differences between the two materials, Zi and ZLS, regardless of fatigue loading, and for the individual material groups based on aging (α = 0.05). Multiple comparisons using Bonferroni post-hoc analysis showed significant differences between Zi and ZLS material groups, with or without aging. Within the limitations of this study, the ZLS crown fit was found to be on par with Zi, except for the AMD parameter. As regards fracture resistance, both materials survived the normal range of masticatory forces, but the Zi crowns demonstrated greater resistance to fracture. The monolithic Zi and ZLS crowns seem suitable for clinical application, based on the fit and fracture strength values obtained.

Survival and complications of monolithic ceramic for tooth-supported fixed dental prostheses: A systematic review and meta-analysis

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Although recent studies have reported the success of implant-supported monolithic restorations, consensus on the use of monolithic ceramic restorations is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the survival and biological and technical complication rates of monolithic single crowns and fixed partial dentures (FPDs).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An electronic search was conducted by 2 independent authors on the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale and Cochrane risk of bias tool were used to assess the quality and risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was performed by using the R software program.

RESULTS

The search identified 763 articles, 18 of which met the eligibility criteria. A total of 15 studies evaluated monolithic ceramic single crowns, and 4 studies evaluated FPDs. The studies included 1061 monolithic single crowns (524 lithium disilicate, 461 zirconia, and 76 polymer-infiltrated ceramic network [PICN]) and 104 FPDs (36 lithium disilicate and 68 zirconia). Meta-analysis of single-arm studies indicated the proportion of survival, biological, and technical complication rates of 1% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0% to 3%), 1% (CI: 0% to 4%), and 2% (CI: 1% to 4%), respectively, for single crowns, independent of ceramic material, and 3% (CI: 0% to 34%), 5% (CI: 1% to 21%), and 5% (CI: 1% to 21%) for FPDs, respectively. Only 5 studies performed a direct comparison between monolithic and veneered ceramic restorations, and no significant difference was observed in terms of survival (risk ratio [RR]: 0.68; CI: 0.25-1.91; P=.96), biological (RR: 0.69; CI: 0.31-1.53; P=.35), and technical complication rates (RR: 0.87; CI: 0.40-1.88; P=.29).

CONCLUSIONS

The use of monolithic ceramic can be considered a favorable treatment for tooth-supported single crowns and FPDs, with high survival and low complication rates. However, further randomized controlled trials are needed to reassess these clinical performances, mainly by comparing them with the performance of veneered restorations.

Behavior of CAD/CAM ceramic veneers under stress: A 3D holographic study

OBJECTIVES

Ceramic veneers restorations may undergo damages, such as cracks, fractures, or debonding. Full-field measurements must be carried out in order to visualize and analyze the strain fields. This paper demonstrates that digital holography permits to investigate the mechanical behavior under stress of a natural incisor and a natural incisor reconstructed with CAD/CAM ceramic veneer.

METHODS

The facial surface of a maxillary central incisor is prepared to receive a monolithic ceramic reconstruction manufactured using a chairside computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system (Cerec AC® system, Sirona Dental System®, Bensheim, Germany). One incisor is kept intact for comparison. The samples are sectioned longitudinally to obtain a planar observation of the region of interest. A mechanical indentation head and digital holographic set-ups permit a full-field, contact-less and single-shot measurement of the three-dimensional displacement fields at the surface of the tooth sample when subjected to load. Stain fields are then estimated and comparison of the results between two samples can be carried out.

RESULTS

3D displacement, fields and strain fields are measured and highlight the behavior of the region of interest in three directions of space for the ceramic veneer and the natural incisor. The strain maps reveal the local behavior, especially the concentration or the sudden change in strain. The transition zones are clearly observed, particularly for the veneered sample.

CONCLUSION

Digital holography highlights the localization of stress concentration zones in regions of interest and yields comparative analysis between samples with different tooth preparations.

SIGNIFICANCE

holography permits to visualize and compare the mechanical response of the ceramic veneer and natural tooth. This helps choosing the mechanical properties of the bonding interface.

Effect of Adhesive Gap Setting on Fracture Resistance of All-ceramic Crowns

Background:

Several factors might affect the fracture resistance of all-ceramic crowns, including cement thickness.

Aim:

To evaluate the influence of cement thickness on the fracture resistance.

Objective:

To determine the effect of varying the adhesive gap thickness on the fracture loads of all-ceramic CEREC 3D molar crowns.

Methods:

Standardized prepared epoxy resin molar dies (Viade Inc.) were fabricated. A standard molar crown was designed using a CEREC 3D machine (Sirona Dental Systems). Twenty-four crowns were milled from Vita Mark II blocks (Vita Zahnfabrik), using adhesive gap settings of 30, 60 and 90 µm (n=8). A dual-cure resin cement (PanaviaF 2.0, Kuraray) was used to cement the crowns to their respective dies, following manufacturer's recommendation. After 1 week of storage in distilled water at 37°C, each crown was loaded in compression until complete failure in a universal testing machine (Instron 8501) and fracture loads (N) were recorded. Fractured specimens were sectioned to determine cement thickness. Sections were examined using a traveling light microscope to measure cement thickness. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA test and Pearson's correlation at (α=0.05).

Results:

The mean fracture loads and standard deviation values in N were 1,267.57 (122.82), 1,225.20 (179.46) and 1,180.76 (161.77) for the crowns with 30, 60 and 90µm, respectively. ANOVA indicated no significant differences among mean fracture strength values (p = 0.55). All crowns failed in a catastrophic mode and were not repairable.

Conclusions:

Adhesive cement gap as achieved with three CEREC 3D settings from 30 to 90µm had no significant effect on fracture strength of crowns made from Vita Mark II blocks.

Long-term fracture load of all-ceramic crowns: Effects of veneering ceramic thickness, application techniques, and cooling protocol

Background

To evaluate, in vitro, the effects of the cooling protocol, application technique, and veneering ceramic thickness on the fracture resistance of ceramic crowns with Y-TZP frameworks.

Material and Methods

80 frameworks were made from zirconia by the CAD/CAM technique and divided into 8 groups (n = 10) according to the factors: “application technique” (stratified-L and pressed -P), “thickness” (1 mm and 2 mm), and “cooling protocol” (slow-S and fast-F) of the feldspathic veneering ceramic. After, all crowns were cemented over G10 preparations with resin cement (Panavia F, Kuraray), mechanically cycled (2x106 cycles, 200 N, 3Hz), and subjected to the axial compression resistance test (0.5 mm/min, 10 kN). The data (N) underwent descriptive statistical analysis by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (5%). Fracture analysis was performed to determine the possible origin of failure.

Results

The factors “cooling protocol” (P=0.0058) and “application” technique (P=0.0001) influenced the fracture resistance of the crowns. For pressed veneer technique, the P2S (4608.9±464.5). A presented significantly higher results than that P2F(3621.1±523.0)BCD (Tukey’s test). For the stratified technique, this difference was not observed (P>0.05). The thickness of the veneering ceramic was not significant regardless of the cooling protocol and technique (P>0.05). The predominant failure mode was chipping of the ceramic veneer originating in the subsurface.

Conclusions

The pressed technique, used with a slow-cooling protocol, leads to the best outcome for the veneering of all-ceramic crowns.

Surface Characterization of Electro-Assisted Titanium Implants: A Multi-Technique Approach

The understanding of chemical-physical, morphological, and mechanical properties of polymer coatings is a crucial preliminary step for further biological evaluation of the processes occurring on the coatings' surface. Several studies have demonstrated how surface properties play a key role in the interactions between biomolecules (e.g., proteins, cells, extracellular matrix, and biological fluids) and titanium, such as chemical composition (investigated by means of XPS, TOF-SIMS, and ATR-FTIR), morphology (SEM-EDX), roughness (AFM), thickness (Ellipsometry), wettability (CA), solution-surface interactions (QCM-D), and mechanical features (hardness, elastic modulus, adhesion, and fatigue strength). In this review, we report an overview of the main analytical and mechanical methods commonly used to characterize polymer-based coatings deposited on titanium implants by electro-assisted techniques. A description of the relevance and shortcomings of each technique is described, in order to provide suitable information for the design and characterization of advanced coatings or for the optimization of the existing ones.

In vitro evaluation of fracture resistance and cyclic fatigue resistance of computer-aided design-on and hand-layered zirconia crowns following cementation on epoxy dies

Aim

This in vitro study was to compare the fracture resistance and cyclic fatigue resistance of hand-layered zirconia crowns and computer-aided design (CAD)-on crowns (lithium disilicate with zirconium oxide).

Settings and Design

Comparative -Invitro study design.

Materials and Methods

All ceramic crown preparation was done on a mandibular molar ivorine tooth, impression made, and duplicated. Twenty hand-layered zirconia crowns and twenty CAD-on crowns were fabricated using CAD/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technique. All crowns were cemented to their respective dies using resin cement for evaluating fracture resistance and cyclic fatigue resistance using universal testing machine.

Statistical Analysis Used

Independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Shapiro-Wilk test were used.

Results

The mean fracture resistance of CAD-on crowns (2660.50 ± 501.303 N) was significantly more than that of hand-layered zirconia crowns (1963.60 ± 452.895 N) (independent samples t-test, P < 0.023). Cyclic fatigue resistance test results showed that the mean number of cycles before failure for hand-layered zirconia crowns was 175,297 and for CAD-on crowns was 212,097 (Mann-Whitney U-test, P < 0.012).

Conclusion

CAD-on crowns were found to have significantly higher fracture resistance and cyclic fatigue resistance properties than hand-layered zirconia crowns.

Comparative Evaluation of Mechanical Properties and Wear Ability of Five CAD/CAM Dental Blocks

This study compares the mechanical properties and wear ability of five CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) millable dental blocks. All the discs, including Amber Mill Hybrid, Vita Enamic, Katana Avencia, Lava Ultimate, and Amber Mill, were cut in dimensions of 1.2 mm in thickness and 12 mm in diameter, polished to a machined surface, and immersed in distilled water for seven days. Vickers hardness was measured and the indentations were observed using microscope. The discs were brushed under a 150 g load. Mean surface roughness (Ra) and topography were determined after 100,000 cycles. Finally the biaxial flexure strength of the discs was measured and the broken surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data was subjected to Weibull analysis. All data were analyzed by one-way analysis (ANOVA). The results of Vickers hardness are shown as: Amber Mill > Vita Enamic > Amber Mill Hybrid > Lava Ultimate > Katana Avencia. Katana Avencia showed the highest volume percentage reduction and the roughest surface after toothbrushing. The biaxial flexural strength is shown as: Amber Mill > Katana Avencia > Lava Ultimate > Amber Mill Hybrid > Vita Enamic. All the tested materials exhibited varying degrees of mass loss and surface roughness. The properties of the composite materials are related to the filler content, filler volume, and polymerization methods.

Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of CAD/CAM Materials for Monolithic Dental Restorations

PURPOSE

To determine and compare the microstructure, flexural strength, flexural modulus, fracture strength, and microhardness of four types of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials for monolithic dental restorations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A lithium disilicate (LD; IPS e.max CAD), a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS; VITA Suprinity), a hybrid high-performance polymer (HPP) composite resin (GC Cerasmart), and a hybrid polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) material (VITA Enamic) were used to manufacture monolithic ceramic posterior crowns (n = 10) that were adhesively cemented on resin-based composite dies and loaded until fracture. In addition, 40 rectangular bars (n = 10) were milled and polished for three-point flexural strength testing. Microhardness (Vickers indentation), as well as quantitative (energy dispersive spectroscopy) and qualitative (scanning electron microscopy) structural analysis were conducted on fracture surfaces. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc test (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

Mechanical testing results showed that the material type has a significant effect on the fracture strength (p < 0.0001) of the monolithic crowns with ZLS and LD presenting significantly higher fracture strength than the PICN and HPP hybrid materials. LD showed the highest flexural strength (p < 0.0001) followed by ZLS, HPP, and PICN, respectively. The lowest flexural modulus and hardness were presented by HPP whereas ZLS had the highest flexural modulus and hardness. The LD presented the highest modulus of resilience and the PICN the lowest.

CONCLUSIONS

All CAD/CAM crown materials exhibited high values of fracture and flexural resistance, making them suitable materials for posterior full-crown restorations. Glass-ceramics suffered more from catastrophic and nonreparable fracture patterns, whereas minimal chipping and type II fracture patterns were more common in hybrid materials. The combination of more flexibility, less stiffness, and increased softness with satisfactory flexural and fracture strength values observed in PICN and HPP makes these two hybrid materials suitable choices for chairside monolithic crown fabrication.

Zirconia toughened mica glass ceramics for dental restorations

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the present study is to understand the role of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in achieving the desired spectrum of clinically relevant mechanical properties (hardness, elastic modulus, fracture toughness and brittleness index) and chemical solubility of mica glass ceramics.

METHODS

The glass-zirconia mixtures with varying amounts of YSZ (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20wt.%) were ball milled, compacted and sintered to obtain pellets of glass ceramic-YSZ composites. Phase analysis was carried out using X-ray diffraction and microstructural characterization with SEM revealed the crystal morphology of the composites. Mechanical properties such as Vickers hardness, elastic modulus, indentation fracture toughness and chemical solubility were assessed.

RESULTS

Phase analysis of sintered pellets of glass ceramic-YSZ composites revealed the characteristic peaks of fluorophlogopite (FPP) and tetragonal zirconia. Microstructural investigation showed plate and lath-like interlocking mica crystals with embedded zirconia. Vickers hardness of 9.2GPa, elastic modulus of 125GPa, indentation toughness of 3.6MPa·m^1/2, and chemical solubility of 30μg/cm² (well below the permissible limit) were recorded with mica glass ceramics containing 20wt.% YSZ.

SIGNIFICANCE

An increase in hardness and toughness of the glass ceramic-YSZ composites with no compromise on their brittleness index and chemical solubility has been observed. Such spectrum of properties can be utilised for developing a machinable ceramic for low stress bearing inlays, onlays and veneers.

In Vitro Investigation of Wear of CAD/CAM Polymeric Materials Against Primary Teeth

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of polymeric computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing CAD/CAM materials on antagonistic primary tooth wear. Five CAD/CAM polymeric materials were examined: Vipi Block Monocolor (VBM), Yamahachi polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (YAP), Mazic Duro (MZD), Vita Enamic (ENA), and Pekkton (PEK). All of the specimens were tested in a thermomechanical loading machine with the primary canine as the antagonist (50 N, 1.2 × 10⁵ cycles, 1.7 Hz, 5/55 °C). The wear losses of the antagonist tooth and the restorative materials were calculated using reverse modelling software and an electronic scale. VBM and ENA showed significantly higher antagonist tooth wear than PEK (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference observed among VBM, YAP, MZD, and ENA (p > 0.05). PEK showed the largest value in both material volumetric and weight losses. In terms of material volumetric losses, there was no significant difference between all of the groups (p > 0.05). In terms of material weight losses, PEK was significantly larger than ENA (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between VBM, YAP, MZD, and ENA (p > 0.05). Volumetric and weight losses of materials showed similar wear behaviour. However, the wear patterns of antagonists and materials were different, especially in PEK.

Repair bond strengths of non-aged and aged resin nanoceramics

PURPOSE

To explore the influence of different surface conditionings on surface changes and the influence of surface treatments and aging on the bond strengths of composites to non-aged and aged resin nanoceramics.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Rectangular-shaped non-aged and aged (5000 thermocycles) resin nanoceramic specimens (Lava Ultimate) (n=63, each) were divided into 3 groups according to surface treatments (untreated, air abrasion, or silica coating) (n=21). The surface roughness was measured and scanning electron microscopy was used to examine one specimen from each group. Afterwards, the specimens were repaired with a composite resin (Filtek Z550) and half were sent for aging (5000 thermocycles, n=10, each). Shear bond strengths and failure types were evaluated. Roughness and bond strength were investigated by two- and three-way analysis of variance, respectively. The correlation between the roughness and bond strength was investigated by Pearson's correlation test.

RESULTS

Surface-treated samples had higher roughness compared with the untreated specimens (P=.000). For the non-aged resin nanoceramic groups, aging was a significant factor for bond strength; for the aged resin nanoceramic groups, surface treatment and aging were significant factors. The failures were mostly adhesive after thermal cycling, except in the non-aged untreated group and the aged air-abraded group, which had mostly mixed failures. Roughness and bond strength were positively correlated (P=.003).

CONCLUSION

Surface treatment is not required for the repair of non-aged resin nanoceramic; for the repair of aged resin nanoceramic restorations, air abrasion is recommended.

Using CAD/CAM–Modified Correlation Mode to Produce Laminate Veneers: A Six-Month Case Report

The expectation of an esthetically harmonious smile increases the level of difficulty when treating patients. Laminate veneers stand out as a treatment option for cosmetic rehabilitation in clinical practice, as they are a more conservative procedure and mimic dental structures. These laminate veneers are generally made with different techniques; the most common requires an impression of the prepared tooth, an impression antagonist, fabrication models, and extensive laboratory time. The computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system optimizes the fabrication of prosthetic structures, reducing chairside time and promoting good esthetic results. Thus, the purpose of this case report is to present the esthetic result of multiple CAD/CAM manufactured laminate veneers using a new self-etching glass ceramic primer with a lithium disilicate ceramic, using the modified correlation and biogeneric modes.

Glass Ceramic CAD/CAM crowns and severely altered posterior teeth: a three levels study

For many practitioners, longevity of full glass ceramic crowns in the posterior area, molars and premolars, remains a real challenge. The purpose of this article is to identify and evaluate the parameters that can significantly influence their resistance when preparing a tooth. The analysis proposed in this article relies on interrelated studies conducted at three levels: in vitro (mechanical tests), in silico (finite elements simulations) and in vivo (clinical survival rates). The in vitro and the in silico studies proved that an appropriate variation of the geometric design of the preparations enables to increase up to 80% the mechanical strength of ceramic reconstructions. The in vivo clinical study of CAD/CAM full ceramic crowns was performed in accordance with the principles stated within the in vitro and the in silico studies and provided a 98.97% success rate over a 6 years period. The variations of geometric design parameters for dental preparation allows for reconstructions with a mechanical breaking up to 80% higher than that of a non-appropriate combination. These results are confirmed in clinical practice.

Esthetic Rehabilitation of Anterior Teeth with Copy-Milled Restorations: A Report of Two Cases

Digitalization has become part and parcel of contemporary prosthodontics with the probability of most of the procedures being based on the digital techniques in the near future. This digital revolution started in the latter half of the 20th century by converting analog objects/signals into digital bits and bytes. Recent developments in all-ceramic materials and systems of computer-aided designing and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), copy milling, and so forth offer excellent esthetics and superb biocompatibility. Copy milling system for ceramics enables milling of the zirconia cores of all-ceramic restorations precisely and also if this system is properly used the procedure for fabricating all-ceramic restorations can be substantially simplified. This case report presents fabrication of all-ceramic Maryland Bridge and post-core with a copy milling system for esthetics and preservation of integrity of tooth. For both of the patients, the use of biologic, all-ceramic, copy-milled restorations resulted in clinical success and recovered function and esthetics.

Esthetic Rehabilitation through Crown Lengthening Surgery and Conservative CAD/CAM Veneers: A Multidisciplinary Case Report

This case report describes a successful multidisciplinary approach used to improve the smile esthetics of a patient presenting with excessive gingival display, asymmetric gingival margins, and small upper anterior teeth and lower anterior teeth. The treatment combined esthetic crown lengthening, dental bleaching, and restorative dentistry using CAD/CAM veneer. The 6-month follow-up examination confirmed the stability of the modification and absence of adverse effects.

A Critical Perspective on Mechanical Testing of Implants and Prostheses

The degree of interplay among variables in dental implant treatment presents a challenge to randomized clinical trials attempting to answer questions in a timely, unbiased, and economically feasible fashion. Further adding complexity to the different scenarios is the varied implant designs and related bone response, area of implantation, implant bulk material, restoration, abutments and related screws, fixation mode (screwed, fixed, or a combination), and horizontal implant-abutment matching geometry. This article critically appraises the most common mechanical testing methods used to characterize the implant-prostheses complex. It attempts to provide insight into the process of construction of an informed database of clinically relevant questions regarding preclinical evaluation of implant biomechanics and failure mechanisms. The use of single load to failure, fatigue life, fatigue limit, and step-stress accelerated life testing is discussed with emphasis on their deliverables, weaknesses, and strengths. Fractographic analysis and challenges in the correlation between laboratory- and in-service-produced failures of dental ceramics, resin composites, and titanium are introduced. In addition, examples are presented of mechanical characterization studies used in our laboratory to assess some implant-supported rehabilitation variables.

Fracture Resistance of Molar Crowns Fabricated with Monolithic All-Ceramic CAD/CAM Materials Cemented on Titanium Abutments: An In Vitro Study

PURPOSE

To assess the fracture resistance of single-tooth implant-supported crown restorations made with different CAD/CAM blocks.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-six titanium abutments were put on dental implant analogs (Mis Implant). For each of three test groups (n = 12/group), implant-supported, cement-retained mandibular molar single crowns were produced. Crowns were made of lithium disilicate glass (LD) IPS e.max CAD, feldspathic glass ceramic (FEL) Vita Mark II, and resin nano-ceramic (RNC) Lava Ultimate. The crowns were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement RelyX Unicem 2. After chewing cycling, crowns were tested to failure in a universal testing machine. Fracture values were calculated as initial (F-initial) and maximum fracture (F-max).

RESULTS

The study groups were ranked, in order of having highest value, (LD > FEL) > RNC for F-initial load value and (LD > RNC) > FEL for F-max load value. This demonstrated that there was no parallel change in the F-initial and F-max values presenting the fracture resistance of specimens.

CONCLUSIONS

There was no accordance between the F-initial and F-max values of the LD, RNC, and FEL after chewing simulation with thermocycling resembling 5 years of clinical functional use. LD had the highest fracture resistance during the fracture test. RNC had low fracture resistance; however, it had considerably high fracture resistance during the fracture test. FEL had considerably low fracture resistance values.

Fracture Strength of Aged Monolithic and Bilayer Zirconia-Based Crowns

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of design and surface finishing on fracture strength of yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) crowns in monolithic (1.5 mm thickness) and bilayer (0.8 mm zirconia coping and 0.7 mm porcelain veneer) configuration after artificial aging. Bovine incisors received crown preparation and Y-TZP crowns were manufactured using CAD/CAM technique, according to the following groups (n = 10): Polished monolithic zirconia crowns (PM); Glazed monolithic zirconia crowns (GM); Bi-layer crowns (BL). Crowns were cemented with resin cement, submitted to artificial aging in a chewing simulator (2.5 million cycles/80 N/artificial saliva/37°C), and tested for fracture strength. Two remaining crowns referring to PM and GM groups were submitted to a chemical composition analysis to measure the level of yttrium after aging. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (P = .05) indicated that monolithic zirconia crowns presented similar fracture strength (PM = 3476.2 N ± 791.7; GM = 3561.5 N ± 991.6), which was higher than bilayer crowns (2060.4 N ± 810.6). There was no difference in the yttrium content among the three surfaces evaluated in the monolithic crowns. Thus, monolithic zirconia crowns present higher fracture strength than bilayer veneered zirconia after artificial aging and surface finishing does not affect their fracture strength.

Mechanical properties of resin-ceramic CAD/CAM restorative materials

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The recent development of polymer-based computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) milling blocks and the limited availability of independent studies on these materials make it pertinent to evaluate their properties and identify potential strengths and limitations.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine and compare mechanical properties (flexural strength, flexural modulus, modulus of resilience) and compare the margin edge quality of recently introduced polymer-based CAD/CAM materials with some of their commercially available composite resin and ceramic counterparts.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The materials studied were Lava Ultimate Restorative (LVU; 3M ESPE), Enamic (ENA; Vita Zahnfabrik), Cerasmart (CES; GC Dental Products), IPS Empress CAD (EMP; Ivoclar Vivadent AG), Vitablocs Mark II (VM2; Vita Zahnfabrik), and Paradigm MZ100 Block (MZ1; 3M ESPE). Polished 4×1×13.5 mm bars (n=25) were prepared from standard-sized milling blocks of each tested material. The bars were subjected to a 3-point flexural test on a 10-mm span with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. In addition, 42 conventional monolithic crowns (7 per material) were milled. Margin edge quality was observed by means of macrophotography and optical microscopy, providing a qualitative visual assessment and a measurement of existing roughness. The results were analyzed by ANOVA followed by the Tukey HSD test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The mean flexural strength of the tested materials ranged from 105 ±9 MPa (VM2) to 219 ±20 MPa (CES). The mean flexural modulus ranged from 8 ±0.25 GPa (CES) to 32 ±1.9 GPa (EMP). The mean modulus of resilience ranged from 0.21 ±0.02 MPa (VM2) to 3.07 ±0.45 MPa (CES). The qualitative assessment of margin edge roughness revealed visible differences among the tested materials, with mean roughness measurements ranging from 60 ±16 μm (CES) to 190 ±15 μm (EMP). The material factor had a significant effect on the mean flexural strength (P<.001), flexural modulus (P<.001), modulus of resilience (P<.001), and margin edge roughness (P<.001) of the tested specimens.

CONCLUSIONS

The new-generation polymer-based materials tested in this study exhibited significantly higher flexural strength and modulus of resilience, along with lower flexural modulus values compared with the tested ceramic or hybrid materials. Crowns milled from the new resin-based blocks seemed to exhibit visibly smoother margins compared with the ceramic materials studied.

Effect of Different Luting Agents on the Retention of Lithium Disilicate Ceramic Crowns

No studies are available that evaluate the retention of disilicate crowns according to different cementation procedures. The purpose of this study was to measure the retention of lithium disilicate crowns cemented using two different cementation systems. Twenty extracted mandibular premolars were prepared. Anatomic crowns were waxed and hot pressed using lithium disilicate ceramic. Teeth were divided into two groups (n = 10): (1) self-curing luting composite and (2) glass-ionomer cement (GIC). After cementation, the crowns were embedded in acrylic resin block with a screw base. Each specimen was pulled along the path of insertion in Universal Testing Machine. Failure load in Newtons (N) and failure mode were recorded for each specimen. Failure mode was classified as decementation or fracture. Failure load data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Failure modes were compared using Pearson’s Chi-square test. Mean failure load was 306.6(±193.8) N for composite group and 94.7(±48.2) N for GIC group (p = 0.004). Disilicate crown cemented with luting composite most often failed by fracture; otherwise, crown cemented with glass-ionomer cement most often failed by decementation (p = 0.02). Disilicate full crown cemented with luting composite showed higher failure load compared with conventional cementation with glass-ionomer cement.

Fitting accuracy and fracture resistance of crowns using a hybrid zirconia frame made of both porous and dense zirconia

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fitting accuracy and fracture resistance of crowns using a hybrid zirconia frame made of both porous and dense zirconia. Commercial semi-sintered zirconia, sintered dense zirconia and sintered hybrid zirconia were used. Sintered zirconia was milled using the CAD/CAM system, and semi-sintered zirconia was milled and sintered to fabricate molar crown frames. Completed frames were veneered with tooth-colored porcelain. The marginal and internal gaps between frames/crowns and abutments were measured. Each crown specimen was subjected to a fracture test. There were no significant differences in marginal and internal gap among all the frames and crowns. The crown with the hybrid zirconia frame had a 31-35% greater fracture load than that with the commercial or dense zirconia frame (p<0.01). This suggests that the all-ceramic crowns with a hybrid zirconia frame have a high fracture resistance.

Ceramic dental biomaterials and CAD/CAM technology: state of the art

PURPOSE

Ceramics are widely used as indirect restorative materials in dentistry because of their high biocompatibility and pleasing aesthetics. The objective is to review the state of the arts of CAD/CAM all-ceramic biomaterials.

STUDY SELECTION

CAD/CAM all-ceramic biomaterials are highlighted and a subsequent literature search was conducted for the relevant subjects using PubMed followed by manual search.

RESULTS

Developments in CAD/CAM technology have catalyzed researches in all-ceramic biomaterials and their applications. Feldspathic glass ceramic and glass infiltrated ceramic can be fabricated by traditional laboratory methods or CAD/CAM. The advent of polycrystalline ceramics is a direct result of CAD/CAM technology without which the fabrication would not have been possible.

CONCLUSIONS

The clinical uses of these ceramics have met with variable clinical success. Multiple options are now available to the clinicians for the fabrication of aesthetic all ceramic restorations.

Fatigue resistance of CAD/CAM complete crowns with a simplified cementation process

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Various computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials are available to fabricate complete crowns. The type of material may have an effect on the longevity of these restorations.

PURPOSE

To evaluate the fatigue resistance, load-to-failure, failure mode, and antagonistic wear of complete molar computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) crowns made of resin nanoceramic (RNC), feldspathic glass ceramic (FEL), or lithium disilicate (LD) placed with a simplified cementation process.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Forty-five molars received a standardized complete crown preparation and were restored with CAD/CAM crowns (1.5-mm thickness, n=15) made of RNC, FEL, and LD. After cementation, the restorations were submitted to cyclic isometric loading: 200 (×5000), 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, and 1400 N at a maximum of 30 000 cycles each. Surviving specimens were axially loaded until failure or to a maximum load of 4500 N. The specimens were analyzed as to failure mode: catastrophic, possibly repairable, and repairable. The groups were compared by using the life table survival analysis and the t test (α=.05).

RESULTS

All the specimens survived the fatigue process until the 800-N step. The survival rate of RNC was 80%, LD 93.3%, and FEL 6.6%. The survival of RNC and LD crowns did not differ from each other but exceeded that of FEL. Postfatigue load-to-failure test was 2500 N (FEL), 3122 N (RNC), and 3237 N (LD). No catastrophic failure occurred in the fatigue test, whereas all of the specimens in the load-to-failure test exhibited catastrophic fractures. Crowns made of RNC seemed to generate the least amount of antagonistic wear.

CONCLUSIONS

Posterior crowns made of RNC and LD were not statistically different, and both had significantly higher fatigue resistance than FEL. All materials survived beyond the normal range of masticatory forces, and all failures were possibly re-restorable except those in the load-to-failure test. RNC crowns seemed to cause less wear of the antagonist.
