A novel pH-responsive monomer inhibits Candida albicans via a dual antifungal mode of action

The scarcity of the antifungal drug arsenal highlights an urgent need to develop alternative treatments for candidiasis caused by Candida albicans (C. albicans). As pH is closely associated with C. albicans infection, it could be an essential target in a novel approach for designing antifungal therapy. In this study, a novel intelligent antifungal monomer, dodecylmethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEM), with a pH-responsive tertiary amine group and a methacrylate-derived CC double bond group is developed. It is uncovered that the two functional groups of DMAEM contribute to a dual mode of action. Under acidic pH, the tertiary amine of DMAEM protonates into a cationic fungicide, sharing similar structural and functional characteristics with quaternary ammonium salts, which exerts fungicidal activity by targeting the CHK1 two-component system in C. albicans. At neutral pH, the methacrylate-derived CC double bond group contributes to anti-virulence activity by blocking hyphal formation. In addition, it is also identified that DMAEM suppresses filamentation by altering the extracellular vesicles of C. albicans. These findings support that the novel intelligent pH-responsive monomer could be a therapeutic candidate for treating candidiasis.

3D micro-CT and O-PTIR spectroscopy bring new understanding of the influence of filler content in dental resin composites

BACKGROUND

Dental resin composites' performance is intricately linked to their polymerisation shrinkage characteristics. This study compares polymerisation shrinkage using advanced 3D micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and traditional 2D linear assessments. It delves into the crucial role of filler content on shrinkage and the degree of conversion in dental resin composites, providing valuable insights for the field.

METHODS

Five experimental dental composite materials were prepared with increasing filler contents (55-75 wt%) and analysed using either 3D micro-CT for volumetric shrinkage or a custom-designed linometer for 2D linear shrinkage. The degree of conversion was assessed using Optical Photothermal Infrared (O-PTIR) and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Light transmittance through a 2-mm layer was evaluated using a NIST-calibrated spectrometer. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) examined surface morphology and elemental distribution. Correlation between the investigated parameters was determined using Spearman correlation analyses.

RESULTS

The study found significant differences in polymerisation-related properties among different filler content categories, with volumetric shrinkage consistently demonstrating higher mean values than linear shrinkage across most groups. Volumetric shrinkage decreased with increasing curing depth, showing no direct correlation between filler content and shrinkage levels at different curing depths. The results highlighted a strong negative correlation between filler content and degree of conversion, volumetric and linear shrinkage, as well as maximum shrinkage rate. Light transmittance showed a moderate correlation with the filler content and a weak correlation with other tested parameters.

CONCLUSIONS

This study underscores the importance of considering both volumetric and linear shrinkage in the design and analysis of dental composite materials. The findings advocate optimising filler content to minimise shrinkage and enhance material performance. Integrating micro-CT and O-PTIR techniques offers novel insights into dental composites' polymerisation behaviour, providing a foundation for future research to develop materials with improved clinical outcomes.

Diversity of short-term DC outcomes in bulk-fill RBCs subjected to a 3 s high-irradiance protocol

OBJECTIVES

To determine the short-term (5 min) initial effects of a high-irradiance light-curing (LC) protocol on light transmission (LT%), radiant exposure (RE) and degree of conversion (DC%) of different bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Six bulk-fill composites with different viscosities were investigated: OBF (One Bulk Fill, 3 M), EB (Estelite bulkfill,Tokuyama), PFill, PFlow, ECeram and EFlow (PowerFill, Poweflow, Tetric EvoCeram bulkfill, Tetric Evoflow bulkfill, Ivoclar), subjected to different LC protocols: one ultra-high-intensity (3 W/cm2 -3 s via PowerCure LCU) and two conventional (1.2 W/cm2 -10 s and 20 s via PowerCure and Elipar S10 LCUs). Specimens (n = 5) were polymerized within their molds (ϕ5 mm × 4 mm depth) to determine LT% and RE at 4 mm using a MARC-LC spectrometer. For real-time DC% measurements by FTIR, similar molds were utilized. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests at 5 % significance.

RESULTS

Regardless of the applied LC protocols, OBF and low-viscosity RBCs (EB, PFlow and EFlow) had the lowest and highest LT%, RE, DC% and RPmax, respectively. RE results of all RBCs were in the same sequence: Elipar-20 s > PCure-10 s > PCure-3 s. DC% of PFill and PFlow displayed no significant difference between the applied LC protocols (p > 0.05). The polymerization kinetic in all materials was well described by an exponential sum function (r2 varied between 0.85 and 0.98), showing a faster polymerization with the PCure-3 s protocol.

SIGNIFICANCE

The measurement of LT% and DC% at 5 min gave an insight into the developing polymerization process. The initial response of these bulk-fill composite to a high-irradiation protocol varied depending on their composition and viscosity, being faster for low viscosity materials. Nevertheless, even though multiple resin composites are designed to be efficient during photopolymerization, care should be taken when selecting materials/curing protocol.

Light-curable urushiol enhanced bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate dentin bonding agent

OBJECTIVES

The low durability of composite resin restorations can be attributed to the degradation of the resin dentin bonding interface. Owing to the presence of hydrophilic components in the adhesive, the integrity of the resin dentin bonding interface is easily compromised, which, in turn, leads to a reduction in bond strength. The hydrophilic nature of the adhesive leads to water sorption, phase separation, and leaching of the resin component. Therefore, hydrophobic adhesives could effectively be used to stabilize the integrity and durability of the resin dentin bonding interface.

METHODS

We synthesized a novel hydrophobic dentin adhesive by partially replacing bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) with a light-curable urushiol monomer. The properties of the produced adhesive, including the degree of conversion, viscosity, contact angle, water sorption/solubility, and mechanical strength, were comprehensively examined and compared to those of the commercially adhesive Adper Single Bond2 as a positive control. The adhesive properties were determined using microtensile bond strength measurements, laser confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy observations, and nanoleakage tests. Finally, the novel adhesive was subjected to biocompatibility testing to determine its potential cytotoxicity.

RESULTS

At a light-curable urushiol content of 20 %, the synthesized adhesive exhibited high degrees of conversion and hydrophobicity, low cytotoxicity, good mechanical properties, and outstanding adhesive strength.

CONCLUSIONS

The introduction of the light-curable urushiol into dentin adhesives can significantly enhance their hydrophobic, mechanical, and bonding properties, demonstrating potential to significantly improve restoration longevity.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The integration of light-curable urushiol has endowed the experimental adhesives with several enhanced functionalities. These notable benefits underscore the suitability of this monomer for expanded applications in clinical practice.

A comparative study on the mechanical and antibacterial properties of BPA-free dental resin composites

OBJECTIVE

The commonly used base monomer utilized in resinous commercial dental restorative products is bis-GMA which is derived from bisphenol-A (BPA) - a well-known compound which may disrupt endocrine functions. To address concerns about its leaching into the oral environment and to optimize the quality of dental composites, a BPA-free alternative base monomer, fluorinated urethane dimethacrylate (FUDMA), was designed by modifying a UDMA monomer system.

METHODS

Nine groups of composites were prepared by mixing the base monomers and TEGDMA in a ratio of 70/30 wt% to which were added silanized glass particles (mean diameter: 0.7 µm) in 3 different volume fractions (40, 45, and 50 vol%). Bis-GMA and UDMA base monomers were used as control groups in the same ratios. Various properties including degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM), water sorption (WS), solubility (SL), surface hardness and roughness, and initial adhesion property against S.mutans were investigated. One-way analysis of variance followed by Bonferroni test at α = 0.05 was used to analyze the results.

RESULTS

A significant difference in FS between FUDMA-based composite with 40 vol% filler (120.3 ± 10.4 MPa) and Bis-GMA-based composite with the same filler fraction (105.8 ± 10.0 MPa) was observed but there was no significant difference among other groups. The UDMA based group exhibited the highest WS (1.3 ± 0.3 %). Bis-GMA showed greater initial bacterial adhesion but was not statistically different from the other groups (p = 0.082).

SIGNIFICANCE

FUDMA-based resin composites exhibit comparable mechanical and bacterial adhesion properties compared with Bis-GMA and UDMA-based composites. The FUDMA composites show positive outcomes indicating they could be used as substitute composites to Bis-GMA-based composites.

Properties of a Dental Adhesive Containing Graphene and DOPA-Modified Graphene

Graphene is a promising biomaterial. However, its dispersion in aqueous medium is challenging. This study aimed to modify graphene nanoparticles with L-dopa to improve the properties of experimental dental adhesives. Adhesives were formulated with 0% (control), 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75% of graphene, modified or not. Particle modification and dispersion were microscopically assessed. Degree of conversion was tested by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Flexural strength and modulus of elasticity were evaluated by a 3-point flexural test. Bond strength was tested by shear. To test water sorption/solubility, samples were weighed during hydration and dehydration. Antibacterial activity was tested by Streptococcus mutans colony-forming units quantification. Cytotoxicity on fibroblasts was evaluated through a dentin barrier test. The modification of graphene improved the particle dispersion. Control presented the highest degree of conversion, flexural strength, and bond strength. In degree of conversion, 0.25% of groups were similar to control. In bond strength, groups of graphene modified by L-dopa were similar to Control. The modulus of elasticity was similar between groups. Cytotoxicity and water sorption/solubility decreased as particles increased. Compared to graphene, less graphene modified by L-dopa was needed to promote antibacterial activity. By modifying graphene with L-dopa, the properties of graphene and, therefore, the adhesives incorporated by it were enhanced.

In vitro antifungal and physicochemical properties of polymerized acrylic resin containing strontium-modified phosphate-based glass

Acrylic resins are widely used as the main components in removable orthodontic appliances. However, poor oral hygiene and maintenance of orthodontic appliances provide a suitable environment for the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, strontium-modified phosphate-based glass (Sr-PBG) was added to orthodontic acrylic resin at 0% (control), 3.75%, 7.5%, and 15% by weight to evaluate the surface and physicochemical properties of the novel material and its in vitro antifungal effect against Candida albicans (C. albicans). Surface microhardness and contact angle did not vary between the control and 3.75% Sr-PBG groups (p > 0.05), and the flexural strength was lower in the experimental groups than in the control group (p < 0.05), but no difference was found with Sr-PBG content (p > 0.05). All experimental groups showed an antifungal effect at 24 and 48 h compared to that in the control group (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that 3.75% Sr-PBG exhibits antifungal effects against C. albicans along with suitable physicochemical properties, which may help to minimize the risk of adverse effects associated with harmful microbial living on removable orthodontic appliances and promote the use of various materials.

Marginal integrity in minimally invasive molar resin composite restorations: Impact of polymerization shrinkage

OBJECTIVES

This study utilized non-linear finite element (FE) models to explore polymerization shrinkage and its impact on marginal integrity in molars following both selective caries removal (SCR) and conventional treatment. Specifically, we performed 2D in silico simulations to study residual stresses post-resin polymerization shrinkage and their influence on the marginal integrity of various restoration types.

METHODS

Initially, FE models were developed based on a cohesive zone framework to simulate crack propagation along the bonded interfaces between restoration and tooth structure in SCR-treated molars with class I and class II restorations. The modeled resin composite restorations first underwent polymerization shrinkage and were then subjected to various occlusal loading conditions. Stress magnitudes and distributions were identified to evaluate the margin integrity and predict the mechanism and location of interfacial failure.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The FE models computed polymerization shrinkage stresses of less than 1 MPa, exerting a minor influence on the composite/tooth interface. Occlusal loading, however, significantly impacted the load-bearing capacity of the composite/tooth (c/t) interface, potentially jeopardizing the restoration integrity. Especially under bi-axial occlusal loading, interfacial debonding occurred in the vertical cavity walls of the class I restorations, increasing the risk of failure. Notably, SCR-treated teeth exhibited better margin integrity than restored teeth after complete caries removal (NCR). These findings provide valuable insights into the mechanical behavior of SCR-treated teeth under different loading conditions and highlight the importance of considering the load scenarios that may lead to failure at the c/t interface. By investigating the factors influencing crack initiation and delamination, this novel research contributes to the optimization of restorative treatments and aids in the design of more resilient dental restorations.

A Historical Perspective on Dental Composite Restorative Materials

This review article will discuss the origin of resin-based dental composite materials and their adoption as potentially useful adjuncts to the primary material used by most dentists for direct restorations. The evolution of the materials, largely driven by the industry's response to the needs of dentists, has produced materials that are esthetic, strong, and versatile enough to be used in most areas of the oral cavity to replace or restore missing tooth structures. Significant advancements, such as the transition from chemical to light-curing materials, refinements in reinforcing particles to produce optimum polishing and wear resistance, formulating pastes with altered viscosities to create highly flowable and highly stiff materials, and creating materials with enhanced depth of cure to facilitate placement, will be highlighted. Future advancements will likely reflect the movement away from simply being a biocompatible material to one that is designed to produce some type of beneficial effect upon interaction within the oral environment. These new materials have been called "bioactive" by virtue of their potential effects on bacterial biofilms and their ability to promote mineralization of adjacent tooth structures.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Chemico-structurally Modified Bis-GMA Analog for Dental Applications

AIM

This study aimed to synthesize and characterize a novel Bis-GMA analog, termed P-Bis-GMA, through structural modification by replacing hydroxyl (-OH) groups with phosphonooxy [-O-P(=O)(OH)2] groups and to evaluate and compare its viscosity with Bis-GMA.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Bis-GMA, triethylamine, dichloromethane, and phosphoryl chloride were utilized for the synthesis of P-Bis-GMA through phosphorylation. Fourier discerned the chemical structure of the synthesized P-Bis-GMA transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and its viscosity was assessed by rheometry in oscillatory shear mode over a frequency sweep range of 0.1-100 (ω, rad/s) at 25°C with a 25 mm parallel plate design and a 0.5 mm gap. The data was recorded and statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

The FTIR analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of P-Bis-GMA, evidenced by the disappearance of hydroxyl (-OH) peaks and the emergence of phosphonooxy [-O-P(=O)(OH)2] peaks in the P-Bis-GMA. Rheological testing demonstrated a notable reduction in viscosity for P-Bis-GMA (436.62 Pa.s) when compared to conventional Bis-GMA (1089.02 Pa.s), indicating improved handling characteristics.

CONCLUSION

P-Bis-GMA was successfully synthesized by phosphorylation reaction where the -OH groups responsible for the high viscosity in the Bis-GMA were replaced with the [-O-P(=O)(OH)2] groups with significantly reduced viscosity.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The development of P-Bis-GMA holds promise for simplifying dental procedures by reducing chairside time with uncooperative children. The P-Bis-GMA-based composites possess self-adhering properties thereby eschewing the etching and bonding procedures with reduced moisture contamination of the restoration during bonding. Effect of curing mode of resin composite cements on water sorption, color stability, and biaxial flexural strength

OBJECTIVES

To determine whether water sorption and solubility of a recently introduced self-adhesive cement is comparable to two clinically tested resin composite cements after thermal aging, and if this is affected by the curing mode. Whether water sorption is correlated with color difference and biaxial flexural strength was also investigated.

METHODS

Water sorption and solubility of three resin composite cements {RelyX Universal (RUV), (Panavia V5 (PV5), Panavia SA plus (PSA)} were measured after thermal aging. Disk-shaped specimens were either light-cured or autopolymerized (n = 15 per group). Color difference ΔE00 and biaxial flexural strength were also obtained.

RESULTS

Sorption was highest for RUV (auto: 54.9 ± 9.0 µg/mm3, light: 49.7 ± 4.9 µg/mm3), followed by PSA (auto: 37.7 ± 1.4 µg/mm3, light: 34.5 ± 1.1 µg/mm3) and PV5 (auto: 21.7 ± 0.7 µg/mm3, light: 22.1 ± 0.4 µg/mm3). Light-curing reduced solubility values, particularly for RUV (from 60.7 ± 20.8 µg/mm3 to 6.4 ± 0.8 µg/mm3). Color differences of ΔE00 > 1.8 (considered clinically not acceptable) were noted after aging for RUV and PSA. Sorption and ΔE00 values after aging were correlated linearly (R2 = 0.970). Biaxial flexural strength values were highest for PV5 (light: 153.4 ± 15.9 MPa; auto: 133.2 ± 18.0 MPa) and lowest for RUV (light: 99.3 ± 12.8 MPa; auto: 35.1 ± 8.3 MPa).

SIGNIFICANCE

Light-curing has beneficial effects on sorption, color stability, and biaxial flexural strength of resin composite cements. Cements containing 2-hydroxymethacrylate such as RUV and PSA are more prone to water sorption and color changes.

Synthesis of a novel monomer "DDTU-IDI" for the development of low-shrinkage dental resin composites

OBJECTIVE

The current dental resin composites often suffer from polymerization shrinkage, which can lead to microleakage and potentially result in recurring tooth decay. This study presents the synthesis of a novel monomer, (3,9-diethyl-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane-3,9-diyl)bis(methylene) bis((2-(3-(prop-1-en-2-yl)phenyl)propan-2-yl)carbamate) (DDTU-IDI), and evaluates its effect in the formulation of low-shrinkage dental resin composites.

METHODS

DDTU-IDI was synthesized through a two-step reaction route, with the initial synthesis of the required raw material monomer 3,9-diethyl-3,9-dihydroxymethyl-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro-[5,5] undecane (DDTU). The structures were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) spectroscopy. Subsequently, DDTU-IDI was incorporated into Bis-GMA-based composites at varying weight percentages (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%). The polymerization reaction, degree of conversion, polymerization shrinkage, mechanical properties, physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of the low-shrinkage composites were thoroughly evaluated. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were assessed after a thermal cycling test with 10,000 cycles to determine the stability.

RESULTS

The addition of DDTU-IDI at 10, 15, and 20 wt% significantly reduced the polymerization volumetric shrinkage of the experimental resin composites, without compromising the degree of conversion, mechanical and physicochemical properties. Remarkably, at a monomer content of 20 wt%, the polymerization shrinkage was reduced to 1.83 ± 0.53%. Composites containing 10, 15, and 20 wt% DDTU-IDI exhibited lower water sorption and higher contact angle. Following thermal cycling, the composites exhibited no significant decrease in mechanical properties, except for the flexural properties.

SIGNIFICANCE

DDTU-IDI has favorable potential as a component which could produce volume expansion and increase rigidity in the development of low-shrinkage dental resin composites. The development of low-shrinkage composites containing DDTU-IDI appears to be a promising strategy for reducing polymerization shrinkage, thereby potentially enhancing the longevity of dental restorations.

Validation of a human saliva model for the determination of leachable monomers and other chemicals from dental materials

This study aimed to prove the validity of a mixture of chemicals, including salts, small organic molecules, mucin, and α-amylase, as saliva surrogate ("artificial saliva") for assessing leakage of methacrylate monomers and other constituents from dental materials. To achieve this, we developed and validated a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the quantification of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), diurethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BisGMA), diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (TPO), bisphenol A (BPA), and five homologues of ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate (BisEMA EO2-6) in unstimulated and artificial saliva, and compared their concentrations in the two saliva media following either spiking with a mixture of the compounds or incubation of test specimens of printed biomaterials. Test specimens were immersed in unstimulated/artificial saliva, incubated at 37 °C for 24 h, and saliva aliquots were extracted with methanol and subsequently analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The method was validated with regard to matrix effects, linearity, selectivity, lower limits of quantification (LLOQ), precision, bias and combined measurement uncertainty (u'). The performance characteristics of the method were comparable for unstimulated and artificial saliva samples. The combined u' for individual chemicals at a concentration of 10 × LLOQ were within the range of 5.3-14 % for unstimulated saliva and 6.9-16 % for artificial saliva, except for the BisEMA homologues. Combined u' for the latter were 27-74 % in unstimulated saliva, and 27-79 % in artificial saliva. There was no detectable release of BPA from the test specimens, and the TPO concentrations were mainly below the LLOQ. TEGDMA and UDMA were detected in the highest quantities, and at comparable concentrations in the unstimulated and artificial saliva. For all BisEMA homologues, the release was higher in unstimulated saliva than in artificial saliva. The study showed that the artificial saliva model can be a suitable replacement for native saliva, but might underestimate leakage of more lipophilic methacrylates.

Prediction of wear of dental composite materials using machine learning algorithms

Since dental materials are worn down over time and eventually need to be replaced. Resin composites are frequently employed as dental restorative materials. By employing the in-vitro test findings of the pin-on-disc tribometer [ASTM G99-04], the goal of this study is to evaluate the capability of three different machine learning (ML) models in analyzing the wear of dental composite materials when immersed in chewable tobacco solution. Four distinct dental composite material samples are used in this investigation, and after being dipped in a chewing tobacco solution for a few days, the samples are taken out and subjected to a wear test. Three different ML models (MLP, KNN, XGBoost) have been chosen for predicting the wear of dental composite specimens. XGBoost ML model yields an R2 value of 0.9996 and it performs noticeably better than the other approaches.

Properties of model E-glass fiber composites with varying matrix monomer ratios

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate properties of fiber-reinforced-composites (FRC) containing Bis-EMA/UDMA monomers but identical dispersed phase (60% wt BaSi glass power +10% wt E-glass fibre).

METHODS

A control (Group A), monomer mixture comprising 60% Bis-GMA, 30% TEGDMA, and 10% PMMA (typical FRC monomers) was used. The following monomer mass fractions were mixed: 50% bis-GMA plus 50% of different ratios of Bis-EMA+UDMA to produce consistent formulations (Groups B-E) of workable viscosities was also studied. Flexural strength (FS), fracture toughness (KIC), water sorption (SP), solubility (SL) and hygroscopic expansion (HE) were measured. FS and KIC specimens were stored for 1, 7 d, and 30 d in water at 37 °C. SP/SL specimens were water-immersed for 168d, weighed at intervals, then dried for 84 d at 37 °C. To analyze differences in FS, and KIC, a two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests (α = 0.05) were conducted. For SP/SL, and HE, one-way ANOVA with subsequent Tukey post-hoc tests (α = 0.05) were utilized.

RESULTS

FS and KIC for groups A, D, E decreased progressively after 1 d. Groups B and C (highest amounts of Bis-EMA) did not decrease significantly. The modified matrix composites performed significantly better than the control group for SP and HE. The control group outperformed the experimental composites only for SL with up to 250% higher SL for group E (6.9 μg/mm) but still below the maximum permissible threshold of 7.5 μg/mm.

SIGNIFICANCE

EXPERIMENTAL: composites with highest amounts of Bis-EMA showed improved hydrolytic stability and overall enhancement in several clinically-relevant properties. This makes them potential candidates for alternative matrices to a semi-interpenetrating network in fiber-reinforced composites.

Influence of Specimen Dimension, Water Immersion Protocol, and Surface Roughness on Water Sorption and Solubility of Resin-Based Restorative Materials

The evaluation of water sorption and solubility is pivotal for the development of new resin-based restorative materials with the potential for clinical application. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the specimen dimension, water immersion protocol, and surface roughness on the water sorption and solubility of three resin-based restorative materials. Disk-shaped specimens of 15 mm × 1 mm, 10 mm × 1 mm, and 6 mm × 1 mm were produced with a composite resin (Z100), a resin cement (RelyX ARC), and an adhesive system (Single Bond 2-SB2). The specimens were immersed in distilled water according to four protocols: ISO (all the specimens for each group were vertically immersed in 50 mL); IV-10 (the specimens were individually and vertically immersed in 10 mL); IH-10 (the specimens were individually and horizontally immersed in 10 mL); and IH-2 (the specimens were individually and horizontally immersed in 2 mL). The surface roughness (Sa and Sp) was evaluated using an atomic force microscope, and the degree of conversion was determined using FT-IR spectrometry. The specimen dimension and water immersion protocol had no effect on water sorption and solubility. For the three resin-based restorative materials, Sp was higher than Sa. The degree of conversion was not influenced by the specimen dimension. The variations in the specimen dimension and water immersion protocol compared to those determined by ISO 4049 did not prevent the comparison between the values of water sorption and solubility obtained for a given resin-based restorative material.

UV-Curing Assisted Direct Ink Writing of Dense, Crack-Free, and High-Performance Zirconia-Based Composites With Aligned Alumina Platelets

Additive manufacturing (AM) of high-performance structural ceramic components with comparative strength and toughness as conventionally manufactured ceramics remains challenging. Here, a UV-curing approach is integrated in direct ink writing (DIW), taking advantage from DIW to enable an easy use of high solid-loading pastes and multi-layered materials with compositional changes; while, avoiding drying problems. UV-curable opaque zirconia-based slurries with a solid loading of 51 vol% are developed to fabricate dense and crack-free alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) containing 3 wt% alumina platelets. Importantly, a non-reactive diluent is added to relieve polymerization-induced internal stresses, avoid subsequent warping and cracking, and facilitate the de-binding. For the first time, UV-curing assisted DIW-printed ceramic after sintering reveals even better mechanical properties than that processed by a conventional pressing. This is attributed to the aligned alumina platelets, enhancing crack deflection and improving the fracture toughness from 6.8 ± 0.3 MPa m0.5 (compacted) to 7.4 ± 0.3 MPa m0.5 (DIW). The four-point bending strength of the DIW ATZ (1009 ± 93 MPa) is also higher than that of the conventionally manufactured equivalent (861 ± 68 MPa). Besides homogeneous ceramic, laminate structures are demonstrated. This work provides a valuable hybrid approach to additively manufacture tough and strong ceramic components.

A low-shrinkage-stress and anti-bacterial adherent dental resin composite: physicochemical properties and biocompatibility

Polymerisation shrinkage and biofilm accumulation are the two main problems associated with dental resin composites (DRCs) that induce secondary caries, which can cause restoration failure. Polymerisation shrinkage can lead to microleakage gaps between the tooth and the DRCs, causing the aggregation of bacteria and development of secondary caries. Reducing the shrinkage stress (SS) and improving the resistance to bacterial adhesion have always been the focus of this field in modifying DRCs. A thiol-ene resin system can effectively reduce the polymerisation SS via its step-growth mechanism for delaying the gel point. Fluorinated compounds can reduce the surface free energies, thereby reducing bacterial adhesion. Thus, in this study, a range of mass fractions (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt%) of a fluorinated thiol-ene resin system were added to a fluorinated dimethacrylate resin system/tricyclo decanedimethanol diacrylate to create a fluorinated methacrylate-thiol-ene ternary resin matrix. DRCs were prepared using the obtained ternary resin matrix, and their physical and chemical properties, effect on bacterial adhesion, and biocompatibility were investigated. The results demonstrated that the volumetric shrinkage and SS of the DRCs were reduced with no reduction in conversion degree even after the thiol-ene resin system was added. All DRC-based fluorinated resin systems exhibited an excellent anti-bacterial adhesion effect, as evidenced by the colony-forming unit counts, live/dead bacterial staining, and crystal violet staining tests against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). The genetic expressions associated with the bacterial adhesion of S. mutans were substantially affected after being cultured with fluorinated DRCs. All fluorinated DRCs demonstrated good biocompatibility through the in vitro cytotoxicity test and live/dead staining images of the L-929 cells. The above results illustrate that the DRCs based on the fluorinated methacrylate-thiol-ene resin matrix can be potentially applied in clinical practice due to their low SS and anti-bacterial adhesion effect.

The impact of Bis-GMA free and Bis-GMA containing resin composite as posterior restoration on marginal integrity: a randomized controlled clinical trial

BACKGROUND

There have been concerns surrounding the utilization of Bis-GMA, a type of bisphenol A (BPA) derivative, within the dental industry. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of bulk fill Bis-GMA-free resin composite class II restorations in respect of its marginal integrity in comparison to bulk fill Bis-GMA-containing resin composite class II restorations over a 12-month period in a parallel clinical trial utilizing a split-mouth, double-blind, randomized strategy.

METHODS

20 patients participated in this study. Each patient has received one pair of class II posterior restorations, Bis-GMA-free (Admira fusion x-tra), and Bis-GMA containing (x-tra fil) on each side of the mouth (split-mouth strategy), (n = 40). The restorations' marginal integrity was evaluated based on Ryge's criteria (modified USPHS) at baseline (after 1 week), as well as 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and after 12 months of follow-up by two calibrated examiners. The statistical analyses utilizing the Friedman and Wilcoxon tests, the significance level was adjusted to 0.05.

RESULTS

Following the 12-month period, all patients attended the recall visits to evaluate the restorations. The Wilcoxon signed-rank and Friedman tests, revealed that both types of bulk fill had 100% of Alpha (A) scores at baseline and after 1 month with no significant statistical differences. After 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, both tested bulk fill restorations showed Bravo (B) score with Bis-GMA free 10% and 5% for Bis-GMA containing with no statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) for clinical marginal integrity parameter in USPHS criteria.

CONCLUSIONS

Bis-GMA-free resin composites demonstrated satisfactory, marginal integrity compared with Bis-GMA-containing resin composites within 12 months.

Advancing Dimethacrylate Dental Composites by Synergy of Pre-Polymerized TEGDMA Co-Filler: A Physio-Mechanical Evaluation

Dental resin composites (DRCs) have gained immense popularity as filling material in direct dental restorations. They are highly valued for their ability to closely resemble natural teeth and withstand harsh oral conditions. To increase the clinical performance of dental restorations, various fillers are incorporated into DRCs. Herein, the effect of incorporating pre-polymerized triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (P-TEGDMA) as a co-filler in varying proportions (0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10% by weight) into bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA)/TEGDMA/SiO2 resin composite was investigated. The obtained DRCs were examined for morphology, rheological properties, degree of crosslinking (DC), Vickers microhardness (VMH), thermal stability, and flexural strength (FS). The results revealed that SiO2 and P-TEGDMA particles were uniformly dispersed. The introduction of P-TEGDMA particles (2.5 wt.%) into the resin composite had a remarkable effect, leading to a significant reduction (p ≤ 0.05) in complex viscosity, decreasing from 393.84 ± 21.65 Pa.s to 152.84 ± 23.94 Pa.s. As a result, the DC was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved from 61.76 ± 3.80% to 68.77 ± 2.31%. In addition, the composite mixture demonstrated a higher storage modulus (G') than loss modulus (G″), indicative of its predominantly elastic nature. Moreover, the thermal stability of the DRCs was improved with the addition of P-TEGDMA particles by increasing the degradation temperature from 410 °C to 440 °C. However, the VMH was negatively affected. The study suggests that P-TEGDMA particles have the potential to be used as co-fillers alongside other inorganic fillers, offering a means to fine-tune the properties of DRCs and optimize their clinical performance.

Effects of Short-Term Exposure of Chloramine-T Solution on the Characteristics of Light-Cured and Chemical-Cured Adhesives

This study evaluated the effect of a 0.5% chloramine T solution on a chemical-cured universal adhesive by comparing the light-cured, one-step, self-etch adhesive for the bonding performance, mechanical properties, and resin-dentin interfacial characteristics. Caries-free human molars were randomly assigned into eight groups based on the bonding systems employed (Bond Force II, BF and Bondmer Lightless, BL), the immersion solutions used before bonding (0.5% chloramine T solution and distilled water), and the immersion durations (5 and 60 min). Microtensile bond strength (μTBS), nanoleakage evaluation, and nanoindentation tests were performed, and the surface morphology of the resin-dentin interface was examined using a focus ion beam/scanning ion microscopy system. Immersion in chloramine-T for 5 min significantly decreased the μTBS of Bondmer Lightless (from 22.62 to 12.87 MPa) compared with that in distilled water. Moreover, there was also a decreasing trend after immersing in chloramine-T for 60 min (from 19.11 to 13.93 MPa). Chloramine T was found to have no effect on the hardness, elastic modulus, or morphological characteristics of the ion-beam milled resin-dentin interfacial surfaces in the tested adhesives, suggesting that chloramine T might reduce the bond strength by interfering with the interaction and the sealing between the adhesive resin and dentin in the chemical-cured universal adhesive, albeit without affecting the mechanical properties.

Effect of irradiance and exposure time on the adhesive properties of universal adhesives after 2 years of storage

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to evaluate the effects of exposure time and irradiance on the dentin bonding properties (microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage (NL)) of the Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CUQ) adhesive and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU) immediately and after 2 years of water storage.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Hence, 128 human molars were randomly assigned to 16 groups based on adhesive strategy, irradiance/exposure times, and storage time for each universal adhesive tested. The adhesives were applied using the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies and were light-cured using four different irradiance/exposure times: 1400 mW/cm2 for 5 s (1400 × 5), 1400 mW/cm2 for 10 s (1400 × 10), 3200 mW/cm2 for 5 s (3200 × 5), and 3200 mW/cm2 for 10 s (3200 × 10). Then, each sample was restored and sectioned into a resin-dentin bonded stick to be tested for μTBS and NL (immediately and after 2 years of water storage). The mean μTBS and NL of all resin-dentin bonded sticks from the same hemi-tooth (factor time) were statistically analyzed using a three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (a = 0.05).

RESULTS

Despite a significant decrease in the μTBS values for all groups after 2 years of water storage, the 3200 × 5 group showed higher μTBS values, whereas the 3200 × 10 group showed lower μTBS values for both universal adhesives tested. Although a significant increase in the NL values was observed for all groups after 2 years of water storage, the 3200 × 10 group showed higher NL values than the other groups (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Results indicate that light-curing the adhesive layer with 14-16 J/cm2 led to an improvement in the stability of the resin-dentin adhesive interface. A longer exposure time (10 s) coupled with a higher irradiance (3200 mW/cm2) resulted in a greater degree of degradation of the adhesive interface.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

To guarantee better stability of the adhesive interface, clinicians could be preferred a light-cured universal adhesive layer with 14-16 J/cm2. Higher irradiances should be avoided.

Comparison of residual monomer amounts released from indirect bonding adhesives

OBJECTIVES

To quantify the amount of residual monomer released from orthodontic adhesives used in the indirect bonding technique and compare it to a direct bonding composite resin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Five hundred stainless steel orthodontic brackets were bonded on bovine incisors using five groups of bonding resins: Transbond XT (TXT), Transbond Supreme LV (SLV), Sondhi Rapid-Set (SRS), Transbond IDB (IDB), and Custom I.Q. (CIQ). Liquid samples were gathered on the first, seventh, 21st, and 35th days. Residual monomer release was measured from the liquid samples with a liquid chromatography device. In addition, the amount and shape of the adhesive between the tooth surface and the bracket base was evaluated using obtained electron microscopy images. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance, and a Tukey post-hoc test was applied.

RESULTS

Hydroxyethylmethacrylate and bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate monomers were released by all study groups. Urethane-dimethacrylate was released from the TXT, SLV, IDB, and CIQ groups. Triethylene glycol dimethacrylate was released from TXT, SLV, IDB, and SRS groups. The amount of total monomer release was higher in chemically cured adhesives than in light-cured adhesives. Among the chemically cured adhesives, premix adhesives had the highest amount of total monomer release. The light-cured adhesives had less thickness.

CONCLUSIONS

Light-curing adhesives have significantly less monomer release than chemically polymerized adhesives.

In Vitro Evaluation of Candida albicans Adhesion on Heat-Cured Resin-Based Dental Composites

Microbial adhesion on dental restorative materials may jeopardize the restorative treatment long-term outcome. The goal of this in vitro study was to assess Candida albicans capability to adhere and form a biofilm on the surface of heat-cured dental composites having different formulations but subjected to identical surface treatments and polymerization protocols. Three commercially available composites were evaluated: GrandioSO (GR), Venus Diamond (VD) and Enamel Plus HRi Biofunction (BF). Cylindrical specimens were prepared for quantitative determination of C. albicans S5 planktonic CFU count, sessile cells CFU count and biomass optical density (OD570 nm). Qualitative Concanavalin-A assays (for extracellular polymeric substances of a biofilm matrix) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analyses (for the morphology of sessile colonies) were also performed. Focusing on planktonic CFU count, a slight but not significant reduction was observed with VD as compared to GR. Regarding sessile cells CFU count and biomass OD570 nm, a significant increase was observed for VD compared to GR and BF. Concanavalin-A assays and SEM analyses confirmed the quantitative results. Different formulations of commercially available resin composites may differently interact with C. albicans. The present results showed a relatively more pronounced antiadhesive effect for BF and GR, with a reduction in sessile cells CFU count and biomass quantification.

Fabrication of Novel Pre-Polymerized BisGMA/Silica Nanocomposites: Physio-Mechanical Considerations

Resin composite mimics tooth tissues both in structure and properties, and thus, they can withstand high biting force and the harsh environmental conditions of the mouth. Various inorganic nano- and micro-fillers are commonly used to enhance these composites' properties. In this study, we adopted a novel approach by using pre-polymerized bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA) ground particles (XL-BisGMA) as fillers in a BisGMA/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) resin system in combination with SiO₂ nanoparticles. The BisGMA/TEGDMA/SiO₂ mixture was filled with various concentrations of XL-BisGMA (0, 2.5, 5, and 10 wt.%). The XL-BisGMA added composites were evaluated for viscosity, degree of conversion (DC), microhardness, and thermal properties. The results demonstrated that the addition of a lower concentration of XL-BisGMA particles (2.5 wt.%) significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.05) the complex viscosity from 374.6 (Pa·s) to 170.84. (Pa·s). Similarly, DC was also increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) by the addition of 2.5 wt.% XL-BisGMA, with the pristine composite showing a DC of (62.19 ± 3.2%) increased to (69.10 ± 3.4%). Moreover, the decomposition temperature has been increased from 410 °C for the pristine composite (BT-SB0) to 450 °C for the composite with 10 wt.% of XL-BisGMA (BT-SB10). The microhardness has also been significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.05) from 47.44 HV for the pristine composite (BT-SB0) to 29.91 HV for the composite with 2.5 wt.% of XL-BisGMA (BT-SB2.5). These results suggest that a XL-BisGMA could be used to a certain percentage as a promising filler in combination with inorganic fillers to enhance the DC and flow properties of the corresponding resin-based dental composites.

Formulation, Configuration, and Physical Properties of Dental Composite Resin Containing a Novel 2π + 2π Photodimerized Crosslinker - Cinnamyl Methacrylate: An In Vitro Research

AIM

To formulate and characterize the chemical structure of a new dental composite with photodimerized cinnamyl methacrylate (PD-CMA) photo-crosslinking comonomer and to evaluate the monomer-to-polymer conversion (MPC) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the new composite copolymers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

CMA was PD by ultraviolet C-type (UVC) irradiation. The research groups were a control group C0 without PD-CMA and two trial groups: E10 (10 wt. % PD-CMA substituted in the base comonomers (B) and diluent (D) mixture); E20 (20 wt.% PD-CMA completely replacing the diluent (D) monomer). Infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were employed for ascertaining copolymerization (CP). The surface features and composition of the copolymers were explained by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, respectively. The MPC and Tg of the copolymers were assessed using FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Statistical tests were used to compare the groups.

RESULTS

The configuration of the new copolymers P (BD-Co-CMA) and P(B-Co-CMA) was confirmed. The MPC% and T g of the copolymers were better than the control. PD-CMA at 20 wt. % in the P (B-Co-CMA) copolymer exhibited the highest MPC% and Tg.

CONCLUSION

The incorporation of PD-CMA in the composite resin resulted in new P (BD-Co-CMA) and P (B-Co-CMA) copolymers with improved MPC% and Tg.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The substitution with PD-CMA offset the shortcomings of the conventional BD comonomers concerning the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the restorative composite resin. This might ameliorate the restorations in vivo longevity and serviceability.

Effect of monomer composition and filler fraction on surface microhardness and depth of cure of experimental resin composites

This study evaluated microhardness profiles and calculated depths of cure at 80% of the surface microhardness of experimental dental resin composites having different base monomer compositions and different filler fractions. Composites were prepared using four different base monomers (bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate [Bis-GMA], urethane dimethacrylate [UDMA], ethoxylated bisphenol-A dimethacrylate [Bis-EMA], and Fit-852) with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) used as a co-monomer at three filler:resin matrix weight percent fractions (50:50, 60:40, and 70:30). Uncured material was placed in 3D printed molds and light cured for 40 s from the top surface only. Knoop microhardness was measured at the top of the specimen, and at every 0.5 mm up to 4 mm in depth. Microhardness at the surface increased in all experimental composites as the filler fraction increased. When comparing base monomers, microhardness was the highest in UDMA-based composites, while Bis-GMA-based composites showed the lowest values. When comparing depth of cure as a function of base monomer type, both Bis-GMA and Bis-EMA showed significantly lower values than UDMA or Fit-852. Composites having 50 wt% filler showed a significantly higher depth of cure than those with 60 and 70 wt% filler. Base monomer and filler fraction significantly influence microhardness and depth of cure in these experimental composites.

High Tg, Bio-Based Isosorbide Methacrylate Resin Systems for Vat Photopolymerization

The use of isosorbide-derived polymers has garnered significant attention in recent decades as a high-performance, renewable material sourced from biomass. Of particular interest is isosorbide methacrylate, which possesses low viscosity (<500 cps), high thermal properties (T_g ≈ 220 °C), and high modulus (>4 GPa). These characteristics present a promising opportunity to replace BPA-derived methacrylate compounds in various applications. This investigation aims to synthesize and characterize isosorbide-based low-viscosity resin systems for 3D printing. The resin blends are composed of isosorbide methacrylate and two bio-renewable methacrylates, furfuryl methacrylate (FM) and bis-hydroxymethyl-furan methacrylate (BHMF-M), polymerized through a digital light processing (DLP) technique. The addition of the bio-based co-monomers serves to enhance the fracture toughness of the brittle isosorbide methacrylate crosslinked homopolymer (G_Ic = 37 J/m²). The resulting polymers exhibit T_g values greater than 200 °C and G_Ic around 100 J/m². These resin systems hold potential for imparting high bio-based content to polymers used in additive manufacturing for high-performance applications.

Five-Year Clinical Performance of Complex Class II Resin Composite and Amalgam Restorations-A Retrospective Study

The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the clinical performance of posterior complex resin composite (RC) and amalgam (AM) restorations after a five-year period. One hundred and nineteen complex Class II restorations placed by dental students were evaluated using the USPHS criteria. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, and Wilcoxon tests at a 0.05 level of significance. After five years, the percentages of clinically satisfactory complex Class II RC and AM restorations were 78% and 76.8%, respectively. The main reasons for the failure of AM restorations included secondary caries (Bravo-10.1%), defective marginal adaptation (Charlie-8.7%), and fracture of the tooth (Bravo-7.2%). RC restorations presented failures related to the fracture of the restoration (Bravo-16%) and defective marginal adaptation (Charlie-8.2%). There was a significantly higher incidence of secondary caries for AM restorations (AM-10.1%; RC-0%; p = 0.0415) and a higher number of fractures for RC restorations (AM-4.3%; RC-16%; p = 0.05). Regarding anatomy, AM restorations presented a significantly higher number of Alfa scores (49.3%) compared to RC restorations (22.4%) (p = 0.0005). The results of the current study indicate that complex class II RC and AM restorations show a similar five year clinical performance.

Effect of Collagen-Reactive Functional Monomer on Etch-and-Rinse Adhesives

In this study, we evaluated a novel functional monomer (4-formylphenyl acrylate [FA]) that can specifically and covalently bind to the dentin collagen matrix as a potential alternative hydrophobic diluent-like monomer for improving the durability of dentin bonding. Experimental adhesives with different FA contents (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) were evaluated as partial substituents for the hydrophilic monomer 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, with the commercial adhesive One-Step (Bisco, Inc.) employed as the positive control. Their degree of conversion, viscosity, hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, and water absorption/solubility were measured as the comprehensive characterization. In situ zymographic assays were performed to determine the extent to which FA inhibits the endogenous hydrolytic activity of dentin. Finally, the bonding performances of the novel adhesives were evaluated with microtensile strength tests and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the incorporation of FA significantly improved the mobility of experimental adhesives attributable to the dilution property of FA. In contrast to the possible compromised rate of polymerization by hydroxyethyl methacrylate, FA exhibited typical characteristics of favorable copolymerization with polymerizable monomers in adhesives and improved the degree of conversion of experimental adhesives. The rigidity and hydrophobic properties of the phenyl framework of the FA molecule conferred superior mechanical properties and hydrolysis resistance to the novel experimental adhesives. An inhibitory effect on gelatinolytic activities within the hybrid layer was also observed in the in situ zymographic assays, even at a low FA concentration (10%). In conjunction with the significantly improved infiltration found via scanning electron microscopy, the experimental adhesives containing FA possessed significantly better-maintained microtensile strength, even after aging. Thus, the incorporation of this novel monomer endowed the experimental adhesives with multiple enhanced functionalities. These remarkable advantages highlight the suitability of the monomer for further applications in clinical practice.

Conditional Mitigation of Dental-Composite Material-Induced Cytotoxicity by Increasing the Cure Time

Light-cured composite resins are widely used in dental restorations to fill cavities and fabricate temporary crowns. After curing, the residual monomer is a known to be cytotoxic, but increasing the curing time should improve biocompatibility. However, a biologically optimized cure time has not been determined through systematic experimentation. The objective of this study was to examine the behavior and function of human gingival fibroblasts cultured with flowable and bulk-fill composites cured for different periods of time, while considering the physical location of the cells with regard to the materials. Biological effects were separately evaluated for cells in direct contact with, and in close proximity to, the two composite materials. Curing time varied from the recommended 20 s to 40, 60, and 80 s. Pre-cured, milled-acrylic resin was used as a control. No cell survived and attached to or around the flowable composite, regardless of curing time. Some cells survived and attached close to (but not on) the bulk-fill composite, with survival increasing with a longer curing time, albeit to <20% of the numbers growing on milled acrylic even after 80 s of curing. A few cells (<5% of milled acrylic) survived and attached around the flowable composite after removal of the surface layer, but attachment was not cure-time dependent. Removing the surface layer increased cell survival and attachment around the bulk-fill composite after a 20-s cure, but survival was reduced after an 80-s cure. Dental-composite materials are lethal to contacting fibroblasts, regardless of curing time. However, longer curing times mitigated material cytotoxicity exclusively for bulk-fill composites when the cells were not in direct contact. Removing the surface layer slightly improved biocompatibility for cells in proximity to the materials, but not in proportion to cure time. In conclusion, mitigating the cytotoxicity of composite materials by increasing cure time is conditional on the physical location of cells, the type of material, and the finish of the surface layer. This study provides valuable information for clinical decision making and novel insights into the polymerization behavior of composite materials.

Study on New Dental Materials Containing Quinoxaline-Based Photoinitiators in Terms of Exothermicity of the Photopolymerization Process

Modern dentistry places great demands on the dental composites used for filling tooth cavities or treating cavitated tooth decay. The aim of the work was to modify the properties of composites by changing the initiators and co-initiators. This was achieved by using initiators based on a quinoxaline skeleton and co-initiators that are derivatives of acetic acid, which is an advantage of these photoinitiating systems due to the elimination of aromatic amines from the photocurable composition. The composites also differed in dental fillers. The effect of the compounds on the exothermicity of the photopolymerization process, the surface morphology of the obtained materials and the maximum compressive strength were determined. The photoinitiating capacity of the two-component systems was tested by the microcalorimetric method using the multifunctional monomer TMPTA, typical for dental filler compositions. The new photoinitiating systems show particularly good efficiency of free radical polymerization initiation, which occurs by the photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The comparison of the tested systems with camphorquinone, a photoinitiator traditionally used in dentistry, made it possible to observe a decrease in temperature during photopolymerization without a significant decrease in the polymerization rate or increase in photocuring time, as well as a better homogeneity of the surface of the obtained polymeric materials. This indicates that dye-acetic acid derivative systems may be useful in dental applications.

Global research on dental polymers and their application: A bibliometric analysis and knowledge mapping

Purpose

The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the top-cited articles, countries, journals, authors, and papers published related to dental polymers and their application. Research articles published from 1962 to 2021 on dental polymers and their application were identified using the Scopus database.

Methodology

Bibliographical data related to the abstract, citations, keywords, and other relevant information was extracted using different combinations of keywords. Further evaluation and visualization of the selected data were performed with the help of various tools, including MS Excel, Microsoft Word, Google open refine, Biblioshiny, BibExcel, and VOS viewer. An initial search revealed 351 documents, of which 327 were chosen for further analysis.

Results

A substantial increase in the number of publications related to this domain was observed. The United States was the most prolific country, while the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from Greece was identified as the leading institute.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis can guide researchers, funding agencies, industry, and institutions.

How the Duration and Mode of Photopolymerization Affect the Mechanical Properties of a Dental Composite Resin

Composite materials are the most common materials in use in modern dentistry. Over the years, the methods of photopolymerization of composite materials have been improved with the use of various devices, such as quartz tungsten halogen lamps (QTHs), light-emitting diode units (LEDs), plasma-arc lamps and argon-ion lasers. This study aimed to compare the mechanical properties of a composite material, depending on the time and mode of photopolymerization. One hundred and forty rectangular specimens (25 × 2 × 2 mm) and forty-two disc-shaped samples (5 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness) were prepared from shade A2 Boston composite resin. Samples were cured using the following seven photopolymerization protocols: four fast-cure modes (full power for 3, 5, 10, and 20 s), two pulse-cure modes (5 and 10 shots of 1 s exposures at full power), and one step-cure mode (soft start with a progressive cycle lasting 9 s). Specimens were subjected to a flexural strength test, Vickers microhardness test, and FTIR spectroscopy test. A 2-factor ANOVA and post-hoc tests were carried out to assess the differences in the flexural strength parameter between the tested groups of samples before and after aging. A mixed-model ANOVA was carried out to assess the differences in the Vickers microhardness parameter between the tested groups of samples before and after aging. The lowest values of flexural strength (p < 0.001) and Vickers microhardness (p < 0.001) were obtained for the 3 s mode for the pre- and post-aging groups. The FTIR mapping tests showed a much more homogeneous chemical structure of the composite after 20 s of continuous irradiation, compared to the sample irradiated for 5 s in the continuous mode. The mode and cure time affects the mechanical properties of the composite resin. Appropriate selection of the cure mode and time ensures better mechanical properties of composite resin. This suggests that the survival of dental restorations within the oral cavity could be extended by using longer photopolymerization durations.

The Effects of Selected Mouthwashes on the Surface Microhardness of a Single-shade Universal Resin Composite: In Vitro Study

Aim:

To investigate the effects of selected alcohol-free mouthwashes with different formulations (zinc-hydroxyapatite, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium fluoride) on the surface microhardness of a single-shade universal resin composite.

Materials and Methods:

Forty disc-shaped specimens (8 × 2 mm) from the universal resin composite (Omnichroma®), and a nano-hybrid composite (Tetric® N-Ceram) were prepared. After polymerization, baseline surface microhardness values were recorded using Vickers microhardness tester. The samples from each material were randomly assigned to 4 groups ( n = 10) and immersed in 20 ml of the mouthwashes: Biorepair®, Listerine®, Colgate® Optic White, and distilled water (control). The samples were kept in the immersion solutions for 24 hours, and post-immersion microhardness values were recorded. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and paired sample t-tests at p < .05.

Results:

Significant reduction in microhardness was observed in all resin composite groups after immersion in the mouthwashes compared to baseline values ( p < .0001). The highest microhardness reduction in Omnichroma® group was observed after immersion in Colgate® Optic White; and Tetric® N-Ceram group after immersion in Listerine® mouthwash. For both materials, the least reduction in microhardness was observed after immersion in Biorepair®. Microhardness values for Omnichroma were significantly higher than Tetric® N-Ceram ( p < .0001). However, Omnichroma exhibited a significantly greater reduction in microhardness after immersion in the tested mouthwashes.

Conclusion:

In vitro simulated use of the investigated mouthwashes negatively affected the surface microhardness of both tested resin composites. The observed effects were both mouthwash and material dependent.

Does Multifunctional Acrylate's Addition to Methacrylate Improve Its Flexural Properties and Bond Ability to CAD/CAM PMMA Block?

This study investigated the effects of a multifunctional acrylate copolymer-Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate (TMPTA) and Di-pentaerythritol Polyacrylate (A-DPH)-on the mechanical properties of chemically polymerized acrylic resin and its bond strength to a CAD/CAM polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) disk. The methyl methacrylate (MMA) samples were doped with one of the following comonomers: TMPTA, A-DPH, or Trimethylolpropane Trimethacrylate (TMPTMA). The doping ratio ranged from 10 wt% to 50 wt% in 10 wt% increments. The flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM) of PMMA with and without comonomer doping, as well as the shear bond strength (SBS) between the comonomer-doped PMMA and CAD/CAM PMMA disk, were evaluated. The highest FS (93.2 ± 4.2 MPa) was obtained when doped with 20 wt% of TMPTA. For TMPTMA, the FS decreased with the increase in the doping ratio. For SBS, TMPTA showed almost constant values (ranging from 7.0 to 8.2 MPa) regardless of the doping amount, and A-DPH peaked at 10 wt% doping (8.7 ± 2.2 MPa). TMPTMA showed two peaks at 10 wt% (7.2 ± 2.6 MPa) and 40 wt% (6.5 ± 2.3 MPa). Regarding the failure mode, TMPTMA showed mostly adhesive failure between the CAD/CAM PMMA disk and acrylic resin while TMPTA and A-DPH showed an increased rate of cohesive or mixed failures. Acrylate's addition as a comonomer to PMMA provided improved mechanical properties and bond strength to the CAD/CAM PMMA disk.

A Study on the Photopolymerization Kinetics of Selected Dental Resins Using Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)

The aim of the presented study was a comparative analysis of the polymerization kinetics of dental resin-based composites currently used in dentistry in different environmental conditions (irradiance, activation time, layer thickness). The photopolymerization kinetics of eleven dental resins were investigated using a Woodpecker LED source. The DC was measured by FTIR in transmission mode and attenuated total reflection (ATR) from 5 s to 7 days. In the transmission mode, the spectra from parallel optical layers (about 0.2 mm thick) of samples placed between the KBr crystals were recorded. In the reflection mode, an ATR attachment with a diamond window was used. The DC calculation method was applied based on the application of a monomer absorption band at 1638 cm^-1 (stretching vibration double bond C=C of the vinyl group) without using a reference band. The data were analyzed by performing an ANOVA test comparison between sample groups at the significance level α = 0.05. For all tested materials, the polymerization kinetics consist of three stages. The fastest stage occurs during the irradiation, and the achieved DC value is 70-75% of the maximum value 5 s after the irradiation. Another 15-20% DC increase at a moderate speed takes about 15-20 min. There is also a very slow further increase in DC of 5-10% within 5 days after irradiation. For 8 out of the 11 tested fillings, the optimal photopolymerization conditions are as follows: a power density of 400 or 1000 mW/cm²; an exposure time of 10 s; and a thickness of the irradiated resin layer of up to 2 mm. The influence of various conditions and factors on the reaction kinetics is dominant only in the early, rapid phase of the conversion. After longer times, the DC values gradually level out under different light conditions. The DC of the dental resins are dependent on the irradiance, light source, filler type, time after irradiance, and monomer thickness.

Bio-based Non-estrogenic Dimethacrylate Dental Composite from Cloves

Bisphenol A (BPA), as an endocrine disruptor derived from petroleum-based chemicals, has been prohibited by several regulatory agencies for use in a wide variety of consumer products. For the sake of reducing human exposure to BPA derivatives and in the context of sustainability, it is far-reaching to develop high-performance and low-toxic materials from bountiful biomass sources. The objective of this work was to synthesize 2 bio-based dimethacrylate monomers, 2,2'-dially-4,4'-dimethoxy-5,5'-diglycerolate acrylatediphenylmethane (BEF-EA) and 2,2'-dially-4,4'-dimethoxy-5,5'-diglycerolate methacrylatediphenylmethane (BEF-GMA), using eugenol as the raw material. The estrogenic activity of bio-based bisphenol 2,2'-dially-4,4'-dimethoxy-5,5'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane (BEF) was evaluated and compared with estrogen and commercial bisphenols. After photopolymerization of the di(meth)acrylates diluted with tri(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), bio-based visible light-curing materials were prepared, and their properties were systematically investigated. Notably, di(meth)acrylates BEF-GMA and BEF-EA derived from these nonestrogenic bio-based phenols exhibited improved biocompatibility and low viscosity (down to 220-280 Pa.s). BEF-GMA and BEF-EA resin matrix exhibits lower volumetric polymerization shrinkage (about 8.5%), high photopolymerization reactivity (>50% in 60 s), and mechanical properties (fracture energy >5.5 N mm; flexural strength of 87-91 MPa, etc), which were comparable or superior to commercial Bis-GMA. The respective bio-based composites still exhibit adequate properties. Therefore, introducing eugenol-based visible light-curable dimethacrylate monomers into dental materials is a potential strategy to establish green sustainability and biocompatible dental materials without BPA.

Influence of Irradiance and Exposure Times on the Mechanical and Adhesive Properties of Universal Adhesives with Dentin

OBJECTIVES

This study evaluated the influence of irradiance/exposure time on the Knoop hardness (KHN) and polymer cross-linking density (PCLD), as well as microtensile bond strength (μTBS), nanoleakage (NL), and in situ degree of conversion (DC) of universal adhesives.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Two universal adhesive systems, Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CUQ) and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU), were light-cured using various irradiance/exposure times: 1400 mW/cm2 for 5 s (1400*5); 1400 mW/cm2 for 10 s (1400*10); 3200 mW/cm2 for 5 s (3200*5); and 3200 mW/cm2 for 10 s (3200*10). Adhesive disks from each group were used to measure PCLD by KHN. One hundred and twenty-eight human molars were randomly assigned to 16 groups according to the following variables: adhesive system vs adhesive strategies vs radiance/exposure times. After restoration, specimens were sectioned into resin-dentin sticks and tested for μTBS, NL, and DC. The data from PCLD (%), KHN, μTBS (MPa), NL (%), and DC (%) data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05).

RESULTS

Significant reductions in KHN, μTBS, and DC (p=0.00001) values and an increase in NL and PCLD (p=0.00001) values were observed for 3200*10 when compared with other groups. Higher KHN, μTBS, and DC (p=0.000001) values were observed for 3200*5 in comparison with the other groups. The 1400*5 (7 J/cm2) and 1400*10 (14 J/cm2) groups showed intermediate values (p=0.000001).

CONCLUSION

Although similar results in terms of hardness, polymer cross-linking density and nanoleakage were observed when 5 seconds at 3200 mW/cm2 and 10 seconds at 1400 mW/cm2 groups were compared, the use of higher irradiance (3200 mW/cm2) for only 5 seconds showed better results in terms of bond strength and degree of conversion for both universal adhesives to dentin. The prolonged exposure time (10 seconds) at the higher irradiance (3200 mW/cm2) showed the worst results.

Eight-year clinical evaluation of two types of resin composite in non-carious cervical lesions

OBJECTIVES

In this clinical study, the 8-year clinical performances of a flowable resin composite was compared with that of a conventional resin composite.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Ninety non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in 19 participants were involved in this trial. NCCLs were restored with a flowable composite (Clearfil Flow FX: FX, Kuraray Noritake, Japan) or a conventional resin composite (Clearfil AP-X: AP) in conjunction with a one-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil S3 Bond). Each participant had both types of resin composite restorations that were randomly allocated. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and annually up to 8 years using modified USPHS criteria. The data were statistically analyzed using the Fisher's exact test, Kaplan-Meier method, and a multivariate Cox-regression with frailty models (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

The 8-year participant recall rate was 95%. One hundred percent retention was recorded for AP, whereas four out of 46 restorations were lost for FX during the 8 years. The incidence of marginal staining increased over time regardless of the type of resin composite, showing 48% for AP and 57% for FX after 8 years. Wear of the resin composite occurred only for the flowable material and there was a significant difference between the types of resin composite (p = 0.024). Overall survival rates at 8 years for AP and FX were 98% and 82% respectively (p = 0.110).

CONCLUSIONS

The flowable resin composite presented lower wear resistance and showed a lower survival rate compared with the conventional composite after eight years of clinical service.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Flowable resin composites may show greater wear after long-term clinical service.

Facile Microfluidic Fabrication of Biocompatible Hydrogel Microspheres in a Novel Microfluidic Device

Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) microgels with tuneable size and porosity find applications as extracellular matrix mimics for tissue-engineering scaffolds, biosensors, and drug carriers. Monodispersed PEGDA microgels were produced by modular droplet microfluidics using the dispersed phase with 49–99 wt% PEGDA, 1 wt% Darocur 2959, and 0–50 wt% water, while the continuous phase was 3.5 wt% silicone-based surfactant dissolved in silicone oil. Pure PEGDA droplets were fully cured within 60 s at the UV light intensity of 75 mW/cm2. The droplets with higher water content required more time for curing. Due to oxygen inhibition, the polymerisation started in the droplet centre and advanced towards the edge, leading to a temporary solid core/liquid shell morphology, confirmed by tracking the Brownian motion of fluorescent latex nanoparticles within a droplet. A volumetric shrinkage during polymerisation was 1–4% for pure PEGDA droplets and 20–32% for the droplets containing 10–40 wt% water. The particle volume increased by 36–50% after swelling in deionised water. The surface smoothness and sphericity of the particles decreased with increasing water content in the dispersed phase. The porosity of swollen particles was controlled from 29.7% to 41.6% by changing the water content in the dispersed phase from 10 wt% to 40 wt%.

Evaluation of residual monomer release after polymerization of different restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry

BACKGROUND

The choice of the restorative resin material to be used in pediatric dentistry is of a great importance due to the cytotoxic effects caused by residual monomers. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the amount of residual monomer released over time from different resin-based restorative materials, which are widely used in pediatric dentistry, by using high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA).

METHODS

The compomers in all colors (Twinky Star and Glasiositte A₂), two composites with different hybrid properties (Arabesk-GrandioSO), and RMGIC (Ionolux) samples with 2 × 5 mm diameters were prepared. The samples were polymerized with an LED light unit (CELALUX 2, VOCO, Cuxhaven, Germany) and then finishing-polishing procedures were applied. A total of 156 samples were obtained, 13 samples in each of the 12 groups. The amount of residual monomer (BIS-GMA; HEMA, TEGDMA, UDMA) (µg/mL) released into the 75% ethanol solution was determined at different times, (1st hour, 1st, 7th, 14th, and 21st day) by using HPLC-PDA.

RESULTS

The residual monomer release continued on day 21 and BIS-GMA was the most released monomer in all groups. HEMA release showed a maximum increase in all the materials at day 7. The highest amount of residual monomer was detected in the gold-colored compomer. HEMA and BIS-GMA release from RMGIC was less than others in all time frames.

CONCLUSIONS

The color and composition of resin-based restorative materials affect the amount of residual monomer. Pediatric dentists should prefer gold-colored compomers less than others as a restorative material, especially in deep cavities. More studies are needed about the subject.

The First Step in Standardizing an Artificial Aging Protocol for Dental Composites—Evaluation of Basic Protocols

The clinical performance of a dental restoration is strongly influenced by the complex and dynamically-changing oral environment; however, no standard procedure exists to evaluate this lifetime. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the effect of different aging procedures on the flexural strength (FS), diametral tensile strength (DTS) and hardness (HV) of selected dental materials (Resin F, Flow-Art and Arkon). Material structure was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that each aging protocol had some influence on the tested properties, with continual erosion and degradation being observed. Greater mechanical degradation was observed for Resin F (neat resin) after the applied aging protocols, suggesting that a resin matrix is more susceptible for degradation. The most aggressive aging protocol was Protocol 5: 0.1 M NaOH, seven days, 60 °C. Further studies on the effect of artificial aging on dental materials should include a study of the thermal and chemical factors. A standardized aging procedure is crucial for improving the resistance of dental resin composite to oral conditions and their clinical performance.

Comparison of Polishing Systems on the Surface Roughness of Resin Based Composites Containing Different Monomers

Changes in the organic matrix of composite resins have been proposed to improve their surface properties. However, polishing systems may perform differently in different materials. This study compared the effect of polishing systems on the surface roughness of four composite resins containing different resin monomers: Admira Fusion (nanohybrid containing pure ormocer), Aura Bulkfill (nanohybrid containing Bis-GMA, UDMA), Charisma Diamond (nanohybrid containing TCD-DI-HEA) and Vittra APS (nanofilled containing UDMA). Cylinders (N = 120, n = 10) were prepared from each material and the top surface of each specimen was grounded using a diamond finishing bur. Baseline measurements of surface roughness (Ra) were recorded using a contact profilometer and the specimens of each composite were divided into three subgroups according to the polishing system: one-step, two-step, three-step. Ra measurements were recorded also after polishing. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). The baseline roughness of all composites was significantly reduced after polishing (p < 0.001). The two-step polishing system provided the smoothest surface for Admira Fusion (0.0770 ± 0.0171) and Charisma (0.1091 ± 0.0090), whereas for Aura and Vittra no significantly differences were found for the three polishing systems tested. The surface smoothness seems to be more material dependent than step dependent, but all tested systems provided clinically acceptable results.

Developments in resin-based composites

With the phasing down of dental amalgam use in response to the Minamata Convention, it is likely that resin-based composite restoratives will be the dental material of choice for the direct restoration of compromised dentition in the UK, at least for the foreseeable future. The current materials have a finite lifespan, with failures predominately due to either secondary caries or fracture. Consequently, there is considerable in vitro research reported each year with the intention of producing improved materials. This review describes the recent research in materials designed to have low polymerisation shrinkage and increased mechanical properties. Also described is research into materials that are either antimicrobial or are designed to release ions into the surrounding oral environment, with the aim of stimulating remineralisation of the surrounding dental tissues. It is hoped that by describing this recent research, clinicians will be able to gain some understanding of the current research that will potentially lead to new products that they can use to improve patient treatment in the future.

Resin-based composite materials: elution and pollution

Pollution arises from all human activity and the provision of oral healthcare using resin-based composite restorative materials (RBCs) should be considered. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the potential pollutant risk to the environment from the chemical compounds found in resin-based restorative materials, by including: 1) the principal pollutant compounds present in the resin matrix; 2) the degradation process of RBCs and its consequences; 3) the methods used for the detection and quantification of monomer elution and RBC microparticles; and 4) a review of the release mechanisms of eluates and RBC microparticles into the environment.RBCs are pollutants by virtue of the compounds created during the degradation processes. These are in the form of the constituent eluted monomers and microparticles. Their impact on the environment and biodiversity is unknown. These materials are currently one of the main direct-placement restorative materials and their success is unquestionable when used and maintained correctly. Mitigation strategies for reducing the impact of pollution on the environment should be considered and implemented by all stakeholders and processes in the supply chain, from manufacturing, clinical use and waste management.
