Abstract
PURPOSE The oral structures such as the tongue and lips have remarkable somatosensory capacities, but understanding the roles of somatosensation in speech production requires a more comprehensive knowledge of somatosensation in the speech production system in its entirety, including the respiratory, laryngeal, and supralaryngeal subsystems. This review was conducted to summarize the system-wide somatosensory information available for speech production. METHOD The search was conducted with PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar for articles published until November 2023. Numerous search terms were used in conducting the review, which covered the topics of psychophysics, basic and clinical behavioral research, neuroanatomy, and neuroscience. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The current understanding of speech somatosensation rests primarily on the two pillars of psychophysics and neuroscience. The confluence of polymodal afferent streams supports the development, maintenance, and refinement of speech production. Receptors are both canonical and noncanonical, with the latter occurring especially in the muscles innervated by the facial nerve. Somatosensory representation in the cortex is disproportionately large and provides for sensory interactions. Speech somatosensory function is robust over the lifespan, with possible declines in advanced aging. The understanding of somatosensation in speech disorders is largely disconnected from research and theory on speech production. A speech somatoscape is proposed as the generalized, system-wide sensation of speech production, with implications for speech development, speech motor control, and speech disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Occlusal sensitivity (OS)-the ability to detect fine objects between opposing teeth-mainly relies on the activity of mechanoreceptors located in the periodontal ligament. We tested whether somatosensory amplification (SSA)-the tendency to perceive normal somatic sensations as being intense, noxious, and disturbing, which plays a critical role in hypervigilance-affects OS. MATERIALS AND METHODS We measured OS in 66 adults divided into three groups based on their SSA scores (LowSSA, Intermediate - IntSSA, HighSSA) by asking them to bite on aluminum foils (8 to 72 μm thick) and a sham foil, and report whether they felt each foil. We performed 20 trials for each thickness and sham condition (each participant was tested 120 times), and compared the frequency of correct answers (%correct) among groups after adjusting for participants' trait anxiety, depression, self-reported oral behaviors, and masseter cross-sectional area. RESULTS %correct was affected by the interaction Foil Thickness-by-SSA (p = 0.007). When tested with the 8 μm foil, the HighSSA group had a lower %correct than the IntSSA (contrast estimate [95% CI]: -14.2 [-25.8 - -2.6]; p = 0.012) and the LowSSA groups (-19.1 [-31.5 - -6.6]; p = 0.001). Similarly, with the 24 μm foil, the HighSSA group had a lower %correct compared to the IntSSA (-12.4 [-24.8-0.1]; p = 0.048) and the LowSSA groups (-10.8 [-22.5-0.8]; p = 0.073). CONCLUSION Individuals with high SSA present with an aberrant occlusal sensitivity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Our findings provide novel insights into the relationship between occlusal perception and psychological factors, which may influence an individual's ability to adapt to dental work.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional load capacity of the periodontal ligament (PDL) in a full arch maxilla and mandible model using a numerical simulation. The goal was to determine the functional load pattern in multi- and single-rooted teeth with full and reduced periodontal support. CBCT data were used to create 3D models of a maxilla and mandible. The DICOM dataset was used to create a CAD model. For a precise description of the surfaces of each structure (enamel, dentin, cementum, pulp, PDL, gingiva, bone), each tooth was segmented separately, and the biomechanical characteristics were considered. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software computed the biomechanical behavior of the stepwise increased force of 700 N in the cranial and 350 N in the ventral direction of the muscle approach of the masseter muscle. The periodontal attachment (cementum-PDL-bone contact) was subsequently reduced in 1 mm increments, and the simulation was repeated. Quantitative (pressure, tension, and deformation) and qualitative (color-coded images) data were recorded and descriptively analyzed. The teeth with the highest load capacities were the upper and lower molars (0.4-0.6 MPa), followed by the premolars (0.4-0.5 MPa) and canines (0.3-0.4 MPa) when vertically loaded. Qualitative data showed that the areas with the highest stress in the PDL were single-rooted teeth in the cervical and apical area and molars in the cervical and apical area in addition to the furcation roof. In both single- and multi-rooted teeth, the gradual reduction in bone levels caused an increase in the load on the remaining PDL. Cervical and apical areas, as well as the furcation roof, are the zones with the highest functional stress. The greater the bone loss, the higher the mechanical load on the residual periodontal supporting structures.

Abstract
Purpose Completely edentulous arches can be restored using various prosthetic modalities, and the treatment outcome may include masticatory and speech discomforts. This study aimed to investigate the current status of prosthetic restoration modalities used for completely edentulous patients and investigate the association between prosthetic restoration modalities and subjective discomfort in mastication and speech by analyzing nationwide big data.Methods Of 97,622 individuals, data from 1,576 adults aged ≥40 years with no natural teeth and no requirement for
additional prosthetic treatments were included. Oral examination data were analyzed, and the prostheses of the edentulous arches were categorized as follows: CD, removable complete denture; OD, implant-retained overdenture; and IF, implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis. Discomforts in mastication and speech according to the prosthetic restorative modality groups was statistically analyzed using analysis of covariance (α = 0.05).Results The maxillary/mandibular prosthetic restorative modality most commonly used was CD/CD, followed by CD/OD, IF/IF, OD/OD, and CD/IF, with weighted percentages of 93.23%, 2.48%, 1.83%, 1.46%, and 0.84%, respectively. Even after adjusting for various covariates, masticatory discomfort in the CD/CD group was significantly greater than that in the OD/OD (P = 0.0004) and IF/IF (P = 0.0002). The CD/CD group also had significantly greater discomfort in speech than did the IF/IF group (P = 0.0119).Conclusions Most completely edentulous patients were rehabilitated with bimaxillary removable complete dentures; however, the discomforts in mastication and speech were the lowest when both arches were restored with implant-supported fixed restorations.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Peri-implantitis occurs around dental implants, and implantoplasty has been used to address this ongoing disease; however, the changes to the physical properties of an implant after implantoplasty have not been well documented. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of implantoplasty on fracture strength and the load required for plastic deformation after cyclic fatigue on dental implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-six titanium/zirconium (TiZr) alloy implants (Roxolid Bone Level Implant; 4.1×10 mm) were embedded with 50% thread exposure and divided into 4 groups based on whether they had implantoplasty treatment by using different diamond rotary instruments and/or cyclic loading at 250 N for 2 million cycles: C0 (control, no cyclic loading), T0 (test, no cyclic loading), CM (control, cyclic loading), and TM (test, cyclic loading). After implantoplasty and/or cyclic loading, all implants underwent a load-to-failure test. The maximum fracture strength (FS) and load required for the onset of plastic deformation (PD) were recorded in Newtons. One-way ANOVA and nonparametric comparisons with control by using the Dunn and Wilcoxon method for joint ranking were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The mean ±standard deviation FS for C0, CM, T0, and TM was 1465.2 ±86.4 N, 1480.7 ±64.1 N, 1299.3 ±123.8 N, and 1252.1 ±85.7 N, respectively. The mean ±standard deviation load for onset of PD for C0, CM, T0, and TM was 860.2 ±88.1 N, 797.0 ±130.5 N, 776.5 ±181.8 N, and 631.3 ±84.5 N, respectively. The TM group had a significantly lower FS and PD than the C0, CM, and T0 groups (P<.05) CONCLUSIONS: Both fracture strength (FS) and the onset of plastic deformation (PD) were significantly reduced after a TiZr alloy implant received implantoplasty and cyclic loading.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether periodontal status is associated with oral function, including masticatory performance and occlusal force, among community-dwelling older adults. BACKGROUND Although a potential association between periodontal status and oral function has been reported, variations in the root surface area (RSA) of each tooth have not been considered. METHODS We used data from a population-based study involving community-dwelling older adults. The RSA with periodontal ligament (RSA-PL), which quantifies the RSA attached to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, was calculated based on full-mouth periodontal examination. Masticatory performance was assessed using spectrophotometric measurement of the color (a* value) of color-changing chewing gum. The bilateral maximal occlusal force (MOF) was measured using a pressure-sensitive sheet and dedicated software. The associations of the RSA-PL, a quantitative marker of periodontal tissue support, with the a* value and MOF were assessed using linear regression models. RESULTS The analyses included data from 250 adults [60.8% women; age, mean (standard deviation) 82.5 (5.0) years]. On average, the study participants had an RSA-PL of 26.3 cm2 , a* value of 25.0, and an MOF value of 555.1 N. After adjustments for potential confounders, including dentition status, age, sex, dental visit regularity, smoking status, physical activity level, depressive symptoms, a history of stroke or diabetes mellitus, and body mass index, the RSA-PL was found to be associated with the a* value [coefficient (per 1 cm2 increase): 0.16, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.10-0.22)] and MOF (coefficient: 9.2, 95% CI 5.3-13.1). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that greater amounts of remaining tooth-supporting structures, indicated by higher RSA-PL values, were associated with better masticatory performance and a higher occlusal force among community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Dental implants are connected to the alveolar bone by osseointegration. Dental implants could be used as a potential bone conduction (BC) hearing assistive device in the mouth. However, the BC threshold of dental implants has not been reported. The present study aimed to examine the pure tone auditory thresholds of normal human subjects to BC stimulation of the implants. Dental implants showed a significantly lower BC threshold than natural teeth and mastoids. Mandibular dental implants had BC sensitivity similar to that of maxillary dental implants. The BC threshold of anterior dental implants was significantly lower than that of posterior dental implants. Dental implants exhibited excellent BC properties.

Abstract
Objectives Occlusal function stimulates different areas of the cerebral cortex. The purpose of this narrative review was to identify the relationship between occlusion and brain activity so as to provide theoretical support to enable future studies on the subject. Study selection, data, and sources Relevant case-control studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews available in English were retrieved from the following databases: MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, and Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS). Of the 53 articles obtained, 12 were included. Conclusion The sensorimotor cortex is affected by changes in occlusion. It is speculated that occlusion could play an important role in the development of diseases, from anxiety and stress to Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia. Further investigations into the interactions between occlusion and brain function are needed to elucidate the parts of the brain that are affected when occlusion is disturbed and to determine whether brain function is altered. Clinical significance Dentists must consider that alterations in the occlusal pattern during mastication can lead to changes in the activation of different brain regions related to memory, learning, anticipatory pain, and anxiety. This suggests that mastication maintains the integrity of certain brain areas and that it may be a key factor in the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
In the current study, we investigated the cortical response of the somatosensory cortex following thermal stimuli to dental implants. Five implants were inserted at the site of the left upper canine with immediate implant placement protocols in five cats. Intrinsic signal optical imaging was applied to measure the cortical responses evoked by thermal sensing via dental implants. The cortical response evoked by 60 g of tactile stimulus to implants was also examined. The response strength and activated location were compared between implants and natural teeth. Thermal stimuli via the implant could evoke reliable cortical responses in the tooth-related region. However, the response amplitude evoked by the cold stimuli applied to the implants was significantly lower than that evoked by the cold stimuli applied to the natural teeth, indicating that the implants were less sensitive to thermal change than the natural tooth. The response evoked by tactile stimuli to implants was significantly stronger than that evoked by cold stimuli. Thermal and tactile stimuli activated the same location of the tooth-related somatosensory cortex in both the implants and natural teeth. Therefore, the thermal change in implants could be detected at the cortical response level. Multimodal sensory integration of thermal and tactile functions existed for implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess whether pain and strain of the periodontal ligament (PDL), induced by orthodontic separation, alter the somatosensory ability to perceive small thicknesses between occluding teeth (occlusal tactile acuity, OTA). METHODS The OTA was tested at baseline (T0), using 9 aluminum foils (range 8-72 μm), randomly placed between the molar teeth, and 1 sham test (without foil), asking the participants whether they felt the foil between their teeth. Afterwards, orthodontic separators were placed, and subjects were randomly assigned to one of the two experimental groups: Group Pain (GP: 18 males; 14 females mean age 25.22 ± 2.28 years) had separators removed after 24 h; Group Strain (GS: 14 males; 17 females, mean age 24.03 ± 3.06 years) had separators removed after 7 days. The OTA measurement was repeated in both groups immediately after orthodontic separators removal (T1). A within-group comparison (T1 vs T0) was performed for each testing thickness (ANOVA for repeated measurements, with Bonferroni correction for multiple testing) (p < 0.005). RESULTS GP showed statistically significant reduction of the OTA at T1, as compared to T0, for the thicknesses 24 μm (p = 0.004) and 32 μm (p = 0.001). No significant reduction was observed in GS (all p > 0.005). CONCLUSIONS Acute periodontal pain tends to disturb the tactile ability of the teeth, while strain of the PDL in absence of painful sensation determines a return to OTA baseline values. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The reduction of OTA might explain the uncomfortable occlusal sensation referred by patients during acute periodontal pain.

Abstract
The role of the gingiva in the tactile perception of teeth is unclear, and the physiological basis of tooth tactile function needs to be examined at the cortical response level. In the presented study, gingiva from the upper left canine was removed under local anesthesia from five cats. Intrinsic signal optical imaging was used to measure population response characteristics of the cat oral-related cortex when punctate mechanical stimuli were separately applied to the left gingiva-stripped canine and right intact canine. Then, their response characteristics were compared. There were no significant differences in the cortical response strength between the anesthetized and unanesthetized canines. Signal strength of the gingiva-stripped tooth was significantly weaker than that of the intact tooth at low stimulus strength. However, no significant differences between the gingiva-stripped tooth and intact tooth were found after saturation. Based on the evoked cortical responses, the gingiva is involved in low-intensity tactile perception of teeth, which could explain the reason why chronic gingivitis results in the paresthesia of natural teeth.

Abstract
Few studies have assessed active tactile sensibility in patients rehabilitated with implants. Improved knowledge about functional tactile sensibility will contribute to several clinical applications, such as protocols for immediate loading, prosthesis design, occlusal improvement in implantology, and physiological integration of implant-supported prostheses. The present study evaluated active tactile sensibility in patients rehabilitated with Brånemark-type mandibular prostheses that impede the total mucosa-supported maxillary prosthesis. Thirty-five subjects participated in this study. The experimental group (n = 18) inclusion criteria were as follows: Brånemark-type prosthesis and a total mucosa-supported maxillary prosthesis. The control group (n = 17) was composed of participants with complete healthy dentition. Carbon foils with different thicknesses (12 μm, 24 μm, 40 μm, 80 μm, and 200 μm) were placed in the premolar region to evaluate the brink of active oral tactile sensibility. The researchers assessed the participants 120 times. After evaluation, we observed a statistical difference (p < 0.05) between the groups. Additionally, the degree of sensibility was found for all thicknesses, except for 12 μm, on both sides. There was a more significant increase in perception in the control group as the carbon thickness increased. The tactile sensibility threshold was 2.5 times greater for participants with prostheses. Thus, the tactile sensibility for mandibular implant-supported and maxillary mucosa-supported prostheses is significantly lower than that of dentate patients, which was detected above the thickness of 80 μm; in patients with natural dentition, different thicknesses were seen starting from 24 μm.

Abstract
Osmotic swelling and residual stress are increasingly recognized as important factors in soft tissue biomechanics. Little attention has been given to residual stress in periodontal ligament (PDL) biomechanics despite its rapid growth and remodeling potential. Those tissues that bear compressive loads, e.g., articular cartilage, intervertebral disk, have received much attention related to their capacities for osmotic swelling. To understand residual stress and osmotic swelling in the PDL, it must be asked (1) to what extent, if any, does the PDL exhibit residual stress and osmotic swelling, and (2) if so, whether residual stress and osmotic swelling are mechanically significant to the PDL's stress/strain behavior under external loading. Here, we incrementally built a series of computer models that were fit to uniaxial loading, osmotic swelling and residual stretch data. The models were validated with in vitro shear tests and in vivo tooth-tipping data. Residual stress and osmotic swelling models were used to analyze tension and compression stress (principal stress) effects in PDL specimens under external loads. Shear-to-failure experiments under osmotic conditions were performed and modeled to determine differences in mechanics and failure of swollen periodontal ligament. Significantly higher failure shear stresses in swollen PDL suggested that osmotic swelling reduced tension and thus had a strengthening effect. The in vivo model's first and third principal stresses were both higher with residual stress and osmotic swelling, but smooth stress gradients prevailed throughout the three-dimensional PDL anatomy. The addition of PDL stresses from residual stress and osmotic swelling represents a unique concept in dental biomechanics.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the cortical response characteristics evoked by natural teeth and implants. METHODS Five cats were subjected to intrinsic signal optical imaging to measure the cortical responses evoked by natural teeth and implants. The difference in tactile sensation between the implant and natural tooth was compared in detail at the cortical response level. RESULTS Some similarities were observed between the implants and natural teeth. The stimulating-response curves of the implants and natural teeth were generally S-curves, and both implants and natural teeth preferred labial-lingual direction stimulation. The implants and natural teeth differed in terms of their tactile sensitivity: implants were weaker than natural teeth in terms of both static and dynamic sensitivity. However, after saturation, there was no significant difference in tactile strength between implants and natural teeth. CONCLUSIONS Both natural teeth and implants are able to distinguish the tactile strength and stimulation direction. Although implants are less sensitive than the natural tooth, the maximal tactile function and directional preference of implants are similar to those of natural teeth.

Abstract
AIM We aimed to clarify the association between deterioration of periodontal status and masticatory performance in a longitudinal follow-up study of a general urban population. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study investigated 663 participants in the Suita study with no changes in the number of functional teeth or occlusal support areas during a 5-year follow-up period. Participants were classified into three groups according to changes in periodontal status during the survey period: a recovered group; a stable group; and a deteriorated group. Rate of masticatory performance change was calculated by subtracting the value at baseline from the value at follow-up and dividing the resulting value by the baseline value. RESULTS Median rates of masticatory performance change were -11.7% in the recovered group, -19.2% in the stable group, and -30.8% in the deteriorated group, and these values were significantly different (p < .001). Multiple regression analysis revealed periodontal status group (recovered group: reference; stable group: p = .029; deteriorated group: p = .006) as an independent variable was significantly associated with the rate of masticatory performance change. CONCLUSION The present results suggest that deterioration of periodontal status increases the risk of age-related declines in masticatory performance.

Abstract
Teeth are critical to the functional ecology of vertebrate trophic abilities, but are also used for a diversity of other non-trophic tasks. Teeth can play a substantial role in how animals move, manipulate their environment, positively interact with conspecifics, antagonistically interact with other organisms, and sense the environment. We review these non-trophic functions in an attempt to place the utility of human and all other vertebrate dentitions in a more diverse framework that emphasizes an expanded view of the functional importance and ecological diversity of teeth. In light of the extensive understanding of the developmental genetics, trophic functions, and evolutionary history of teeth, comparative studies of vertebrate dentitions will continue to provide unique insights into multi-functionality, many-to-one mapping, and the evolution of novel abilities.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the improvement in oral stereognostic ability, masticatory efficiency, and difference in salivary flow rate in nonexperienced denture wearers, before, after, and 6 months after rehabilitation with complete dentures. Settings and Design: Invivo – Observational study. Materials and Methods: Seventy edentulous subjects were selected who came for rehabilitation with complete dentures for the first time. The study was conducted in three stages–before denture insertion, after denture insertion, and 6 months after denture insertion. Oral stereognostic ability was evaluated by asking the subjects to identify six heat cured acrylic resin samples by oral manipulation without seeing it. The unstimulated salivary flow rate was estimated by measuring the time taken to collect 5 ml of the whole saliva. Masticatory efficiency of the subjects was assessed with the help of preweighed chewing gums. The chewing gums were desiccated after the chewing strokes and weighed again. Statistical Analyses Used: Data were tabulated and analyzed statistically using pairedt-test, one-way ANOVA test, and the post hoc test. Results: Oral stereognostic ability increased immediately on insertion of complete dentures and was still higher 6 months post insertion of dentures. Comparison of the means of masticatory efficiency after denture insertion and 6 months after denture usage gave highly significant values (p< 0.001). The salivary flow which increased immediately following denture insertion returned to almost normal 6 months after denture insertion. Conclusion: The study support the hypothesis that the presence of dentures improve oral sterognostic ability and masticatory efficiency.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occlusal force adjusting ability of implant-supported overdenture (IOD) wearers, as compared with natural teeth and complete dentures. METHODS Subjects were those with natural dentition (ND group; 19 subjects), those with implant-supported overdentures (IOD group; 7 subjects), and those with complete dentures (CD group; 14 subjects). Subjects were asked to hold test foods (peanuts and biscuits mounted on a custom-made apparatus with a force transducer) between their anterior incisors (hold phase) and split test foods (split phase). The mean value of the occlusal force during the hold phase (hold force), the peak force rate during the split phase (peak force rate), the time required to split test foods (duration), and the maximum occlusal force in the split phase (split force) were selected as outcomes. Data were analyzed with Wilcoxon's signed rank test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiple regression analysis (Statistical significance levels: 5%). RESULTS For peanuts, the peak force rate for the ND group was significantly higher than the IOD and CD groups. The duration of the CD group was significantly longer than the ND and IOD groups. Multiple regression analysis indicated that even with adjustment for age and sex, there were significant differences in the peak force rate between the ND and the IOD, CD groups, and in the duration between the ND and CD group. CONCLUSIONS Subjects with IODs showed superior ability to adjust occlusal force, as compared with complete dentures, although it didn't match the natural dentition.

Abstract
Background and objective Orofacial quantitative sensory testing (QST) is an increasingly valuable psychophysical tool for evaluating neurosensory disorders of the orofacial region. Here, we aimed to evaluate the current evidence regarding this testing method and to discuss its future clinical potential. Data treatment We conducted a literature search in Medline, Embase and Scopus for English‐language articles published between 1990 and 2019. The utilized search terms included QST, quantitative, sensory testing and neurosensory, which were combined using the AND operator with the terms facial, orofacial, trigeminal, intraoral and oral. Results Our findings highlighted many methods for conducting QST—including method of levels, method of limits and mapping. Potential stimuli also vary, and can include mechanical or thermal stimulation, vibration or pinprick stimuli. Orofacial QST may be helpful in revealing disease pathways and can be used for patient stratification to validate the use of neurosensory profile‐specific treatment options. QST is reportedly reliable in longitudinal studies and is thus a candidate for measuring changes over time. One disadvantage of QST is the substantial time required; however, further methodological refinements and the combination of partial aspects of the full QST battery with other tests and imaging methods should result in improvement. Conclusions Overall, orofacial QST is a reliable testing method for diagnosing pathological neurosensory conditions and assessing normal neurosensory function. Despite the remaining challenges that hinder the use of QST for everyday clinical decisions and clinical trials, we expect that future improvements will allow its implementation in routine practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the smallest thickness that can be perceived between occluding teeth (occlusal tactile acuity, OTA) of temporomandibular disorder pain (TMD-P) patients with that of control (CTR) individuals. METHODS Twenty TMD-P patients (17 women and 3 men, mean age: 31.3 ± 10.4 years) diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) protocol and 20 age- and gender-matched controls (17 women and 3 men, mean age: 31.4 ± 10.5 years) were enrolled. The OTA was tested with 10 different thicknesses: 9 aluminium foils (8 µm-72 µm with a constant increment of 8 µm) and 1 sham test (without foil), each thickness being tested 10 times in random order (100 tests in total). The participants were instructed to close their mouth once and to report whether they felt the foil between their molar teeth. A between-group comparison (TMD-P vs CTR) was performed for each testing thickness (analysis of variance for repeated measurements, with Bonferroni multiple correction) (P < .005). RESULTS Significantly increased OTA was observed in the TMD-P group for the thicknesses between 8 µm and 40 µm, while no significant differences were found for the sham test and for the larger thicknesses tested (from 48 µm to 72 µm). CONCLUSIONS TMD-pain subjects presented an increased OTA as compared to controls.

Abstract
Background Autologous plasma fractions, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-poor plasma (PPP), contain growth factors that can enhance neural cell survival and are therefore likely to have the ability to promote nerve regeneration. The present study compared the effect of PRP and PPP application on myelinated nerve density and diameter in the peri-implant bone region. In addition, the effect of healing time on nerve regeneration was assessed. Materials and methods Nine beagle dogs randomly received 54 dental implants in the bilateral mandible according to a split-mouth design. Each implant was randomly assigned to one of three implant protocols: delayed implant placement with delayed loading (DIP + DL) with local application of PRP, DIP + DL with local application of PPP and DIP + DL without any plasma additive. The animals were euthanized at 1, 3, and 6 months after loading (3 dogs per time point). Block biopsies were prepared for histomorphometry in the peri-implant bone within 500 μm around the implants. Results Myelinated nerve fibers were identified in the trabecular bone and in the osteons near the implants surface. The nerve fibers in the PRP group (median ± IQR; 2.88 ± 1.55 μm) had a significantly (p < 0.05) greater diameter compared to the PPP (2.40 ± 0.91 μm) and control (2.11 ± 1.16 μm) group. The nerve diameter after 6 months healing (3.18 ± 1.58 μm) was significantly (p < 0.05) greater compared to 1 (2.08 ± 0.89 μm) and 3 (2.49 ± 1.22 μm) months. No significant difference was found for myelinated nerve density between groups and healing time. Conclusions The present study showed that the healing time significantly influenced the diameter of the myelinated nerve fibers in peri-implant bone. PRP exerted a significant effect on the diameter of the myelinated nerve fibers as compared to PPP. Large-scale animal studies and longer follow-up periods are needed to confirm these findings and to verify whether platelet plasma can facilitate nerve regeneration process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marginal bone stability is considered one of the most important issues in implant dentistry. It is essential to understand how various factors influence bone resorption around implants. The purpose of this retrospective longitudinal study was to identify potential risk indicators associated with marginal bone resorption around implants in function for at least 4 years. METHODS Several systemic-related, intraoral-related, implant-related factors were collected. Marginal bone level change (MBLC) was determined by comparing intraoral radiographs taken at baseline (1 year after prosthesis delivery), and at follow-up (over 3 years from baseline). A hierarchical regression analysis using liner mixed-effects models was performed to examine correlations between MBLC and various factors. RESULTS Overall, 514 patients with 1535 implants were analyzed. The mean age of the participants was 62.9 years. Mean annual MBLC was 0.048 mm, and mean functional time was 5.96 years. The result showed that the following explanatory variables had significant effects on MBLC: functional time, plaque control record > 20%, Eichner index C1-3, maxilla, cement-retained superstructure, and keratinized mucosa width < 2 mm. We did not find statistically significant associations between bone resorption and some variables known as risk factors, such as diabetes, smoking, and history of periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS Within the limits of this study, longer functional time, poor oral hygiene, loss of occlusal support, location in the maxilla, cement-retained superstructure, and less keratinized mucosa should be considered as risk indicators for bone resorption around implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the trueness of 3D digital models derived from CBCT and IOS and to evaluate their accuracy for implementation in oral implant rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS A dry human mandible with a full set of intact teeth was included in the study. The mandible was scanned using Trios IOS and four different CBCT machines with various protocols for generation of 3D digital models. A µCT was utilized to scan each tooth individually. Following registration and segmentation, the trueness evaluation of 3D digital models was carried out by part comparison analysis and color-coded mapping of the superimposed teeth surfaces. RESULTS The four CBCT-derived 3D digital models with different protocols had better trueness than Trios IOS. NewTom VGi evo (110 KV), ProMax 3D (90 kV), 3D Accuitomo 170 (90 kV), Green 21 (110 kV), and Green 21 (90 kV) showed significantly better trueness than IOS. However, 3D Accuitomo 170 and ProMax 3D CBCT devices with 70 kV protocol showed better trueness without any significant difference with IOS. CONCLUSION CBCT-derived 3D digital models showed better trueness when compared with IOS. When CBCT data are available for preoperative planning for oral implant rehabilitation, it may preclude the need for IOS for obtaining 3D study models.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Oral parafunctional behaviors are characterized by an overuse of the masticatory muscles, thus applying aberrant occlusal force to the teeth for prolonged periods. However, whether increased periodontal receptor activity in individuals with a high degree of oral parafunction alters the occlusal sensitivity is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate occlusal sensitivity in adults reporting a high or low frequency of awake oral parafunctional behaviors, as assessed with the short version of the oral behavior checklist (OBC-It 6). MATERIAL AND METHODS Self-reporting questionnaires (N=212) were distributed among dental and medical students. Individuals with an OBC-It 6 score below the 20th percentile (low-frequency parafunction (LFP) group: 13 men and 15 women) and above the 80th percentile (high-frequency parafunction [HFP] group: 11 men and 17 women) were selected for the occlusal sensitivity assessment. The occlusal sensitivity was tested with 10 different thicknesses: 9 aluminum foils ranging from 8 μm to 72 μm with a constant increment of 8 μm and 1 sham test without any foil. The testing foils were presented 10 times in random order (100 tests in total). The participants were instructed to close their mouth only once and to report whether they felt the aluminum foil between their teeth. A between-group comparison (HFP versus LFP) was performed for each testing thickness (Student t test for unpaired data, Bonferroni correction) (α=.005). RESULTS For the sham test and for the testing thicknesses between 8 μm and 48 μm, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 groups. The thicknesses 0.56 mm, 0.64 mm, and 0.72 mm were significantly better perceived in the HFP group than in the LFP group (P<.005, P<.001, and P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Individuals with a high frequency of self-reported awake oral parafunction presented higher occlusal sensitivity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of sleep restriction on somatosensory sensitivity related to occlusion. METHODS Twelve healthy participants participated in an experimental voluntary total sleep restriction (SR) study. In a study design, they were invited to sleep as usual, normal sleep (NS) or to restrict their sleep for four nights. Following the SR night, participants were followed for 3 consecutive days including the 2 sleep nights. In NS experiment, all participants were instructed to maintain NS both nights. During all nights, actigraphy data were collected and total sleep time was estimated. On days before and after sleep conditions, all participants underwent measurements of tactile detection threshold (TDT), interocclusal detection threshold (IDT), perception of unpleasantness (POU), and the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). RESULTS As expected, total sleep time on the first night in SR experiment was significantly shorter than on the second night in SR experiment and on the first night in NS experiment (P<0.05). ESS values on Day-2 following SR experiment were significantly higher than on Day-1 and Day-3 in SR experiment and Day-2 in NS experiment (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in TDT and IDT between each day at each measurement point in both experiments. POU was significantly lower on Day-2 in SR experiment than on Day-1 and Day-3 in SR experiment and on Day-2 in NS experiment (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present results suggest that SR affects to occlusal sensation related to POU.

Abstract
Background and Objective:
The relationship between periodontal sensation and Myofascial Pain (MP) is not yet fully clarified. The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the periodontal sensation threshold between subjects with MP and subjects with no Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD).
Methods:
Participants have clinically assessed in accordance with the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders version 1.0 guidelines and assigned to the MP group (mean age 54.8 ± 14.8 years; 1 male and 11 females) or the control group (mean age: 63.9 ± 13.2 years; 1 male and 15 females). The Passive Periodontal Sensation Threshold (PPST) was evaluated using impulsive mechanical stimulation on the occlusal surface parallel to the tooth axis of the maxillary first molar, if present. The difference in the mean PPST between the MP group and the control group was evaluated using the Student t-test after checking for homoscedasticity.
Results:
The mean PPST value was 1050.1 ± 480.3 mN in the MP group and 712.3 ± 288.5 mN in the control group. A significant difference was observed between these mean PPST values (p = 0.045).
Conclusion:
There was a significant difference in PPST between the MP group and the control group. Although the etiology of the change of PPST is still unknown, the higher PPST value observed in MP patients suggests that future study on occlusal dysesthesia or occlusal sensation-related pathosis is warranted.

Abstract
Introduction: Orofacial pain of periodontal origin has a wide range of causes, and its high prevalence and negative effect on patients' quality of life make intervention mandatory. This review provides a periodontological overview of the field of orofacial pain, focusing on the entities which involve the periodontal tissues and may be the cause of this pain or discomfort. Methods: The study comprised a literature search of these pathologies conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed Database. Acute infectious entities such as gingival and periodontal abscesses are emergencies that require a rapid response. Periodontitis associated with endodontic processes, necrotizing periodontal disorders, desquamative gingivitis, gingival recession, and mucogingival herpetic lesions, cause mild to severe pain due to tissue destruction and loss. Other lesions that lead to periodontal discomfort include gingival enlargement and periodontal ligament strains associated with occlusal trauma, parafunctional habit and the impaction of food or foreign bodies. Conclusion: A range of therapeutic, pharmacological and surgical alternatives are available for the management of these injuries. However, the wide variety of causes of orofacial pain or periodontal discomfort may confuse the clinician during diagnosis and may lead to the wrong choice of treatment.

Abstract
Patients sometimes complain that non-vital teeth after root canal treatment (RCT) are paresthesia compared with vital teeth, and previous psychological studies on the tactile sensibility of non-vital teeth remained controversial. In the present study, intrinsic signal optical imaging, which served as an objective tool, was employed to compare the cortex response characteristics following forces applied to the cat non-vital and vital canines. Based on the evoked cortical responses, the response threshold, signal strength, spatial pattern, temporal dynamics and the preference of force direction, they were not significantly different between vital and non-vital canines. It seemed that the tactile sensibility of vital and non-vital teeth was comparable at the cortical response level, and pulpal receptors were not concerned in tactile function.

Abstract
We investigated the oral stereognostic ability (OSA) of dentate individuals, conventional complete denture patients, and maxillary implant-supported denture patients with bar attachments. Stereognosis tests were carried out, and the relationship between OSA and patient satisfaction was assessed with a satisfaction survey: the Turkish version of the oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-TR-14). To compare differences in oral sensory function among individuals with natural dentition, complete denture wearers, and maxillary implant-supported denture wearers, tactile awareness (thickness perception threshold) and pressure awareness (threshold of lateral loading) were assessed. According to the results, the oral perception level of natural dentate patients was higher than that of the complete denture group and maxillary implant-supported complete denture group at the end of the study. There was no statistically significant difference in OHIP-TR-14 scores between the maxillary implant-supported complete denture group and the complete denture group ( P < .05). The control group perceived the applied lateral and vertical forces statistically earlier than the other groups ( P < .001). There was no statistically significant difference between the complete denture and maxillary implant-supported denture groups in terms of the lateral pressure threshold or thickness tactile threshold ( P > .05). At the end of the study it was concluded that there was no correlation between oral perception levels and satisfaction in patients with complete dentures and patients with maxillary implant-supported complete dentures. The control group, compared with the complete denture and maxillary implant-supported complete denture groups, perceived the lateral and vertical forces statistically earlier than the other groups.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate sensibility threshold for interocclusal thickness in experienced and nonexperienced denture wearers after the insertion of new complete dentures. Materials and Methods A total of 88 patients with complete dentures have participated in this study. The research was divided into two experimental groups, compared with the previous experience prosthetic dental treatment. The sensibility threshold for interocclusal thickness was measured with metal foil with 8 μm thickness and width of 8 mm, placed between the upper and lower incisor region. Statistical analysis was performed using standard software package BMDP (biomedical statistical package). Results Results suggest that time of measurement affects the average values of the sensibility threshold for interocclusal thickness (F = 242.68, p = 0.0000). Gender appeared to be a significant factor when it interacted with time measurement resulting in differences in sensibility threshold for interocclusal thickness (gender: F = 9.84, p = 0.018; F = 4.83, p = 0.0003). Conclusion The sensibility threshold for interocclusal thickness was the most important functional adaptation in patient with complete dentures. A unique trait of this indicator is the progressive reduction of initial values and a tendency to reestablish the stationary state in the fifteenth week after dentures is taken off.

Abstract
Sensory information from periodontal mechanoreceptors (PMRs) surrounding the roots of natural teeth is important for optimizing the positioning of food and adjustment of force vectors during precision biting. The present experiment was designed to test the hypothesis; that reduction of afferent inputs from the PMRs, by anesthesia, perturbs the oral fine motor control and related jaw movements during intraoral manipulation of morsels of food. Thirty healthy volunteers with a natural dentition were equally divided into experimental and control groups. The participants in both groups were asked to manipulate and split a spherical candy into two equal halves with the front teeth. An intervention was made by anesthetizing the upper and lower incisors of the experimental group while the control group performed the task without intervention. Performance of the split was evaluated and the jaw movement recorded. The experimental group demonstrated a significant decrease in measures of performance following local anesthesia. However, there was no significant changes in the duration or position of the jaw during movements in the experimental and control group. In conclusion, transient deprivation of sensory information from PMRs perturbs oral fine motor control during intraoral manipulation of food, however, no significant alterations in duration or positions of the jaw during movements can be observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Occlusal adjustment can optimize the result of orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, and comprehensive restoration, and resolve adverse forces to the dentition that affect the entire masticatory system. Mounted diagnostic casts and computerized occlusal analysis offer complementary advantages for evaluating occlusal problems. Predictable occlusal adjustment is facilitated by precise, measured documentation of occlusal force by computerized occlusal analysis. CLINICAL PRESENTATION A conservative, structural correction of a pronounced, chronic occlusal problem by additive and subtractive occlusal adjustment was performed after a previous failed occlusal adjustment. The patient's chief concerns were significant anterior teeth fremitus in maximum intercuspation and "pain in the teeth and a poor bite" after 30+ adjustments over 2.5 years. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Confirmation of specific criteria for a therapeutic occlusion resolved the anterior teeth fremitus and uneven bite. Traumatic occlusal contact on posterior teeth may elicit protective mandibular repositioning affecting anterior teeth relationships and should be considered during comprehensive diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the properties of nerve fibers of dogs by immunohistochemical staining method. METHODS Intact bone blocks above the inferior alveolar nerve canal were cut from the medial of the second premolar to the distal of the third premolar of healthy adult Beagle dogs of 18 months, embedded to make hard tissue sections, stained with S100 and neurofilament protein (NFP) antibodies, and finally observed the nerve distribution under the microscope. RESULTS The distribution of S100 positive tissue in the periodontal ligament of dogs showed the following patterns: bundles of densely gathered rings with different diameters, filaments accompanied by lumens, free endings and deep-dyeing oval lamellasome. The location of NFP positive tissue was similar to that of S100 positive tissue, but the distribution of these NFP positive filaments with various diameters showed largely as bundles, free ending and branches scattering in periodontal membrane. CONCLUSIONS We may firstly distinguish the structure of the nerve fibers in periodontal ligament of nerve distribution, and then judge the categories of the nerve fibers by S100 immunohistochemistry furtherly according to comparison of the thickness of neural axon by NFP immunohistochemistry, and finally distinct the function and attribute of the nerve fibers in the periodontal ligament of dogs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Replacement of lost teeth has significant functional and psychosocial effects. The capability of osseointegrated dental implants to transmit a certain amount of sensibility is still unclear. The phenomenon of developing a certain amount of tactile sensibility through osseointegrated dental implants is called osseoperception. The aim of this article is to evaluate the available literature to find osseoperception associated with dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS To identify suitable literature, an electronic search was performed using Medline and PubMed database. Articles published in English and articles whose abstract is available in English were included. The articles included in the review were based on osseoperception, tactile sensation, and neurophysiological mechanoreceptors in relation to dental implants. Articles on peri-implantitis and infection-related sensitivity were not included. Review articles without the original data were excluded, although references to potentially pertinent articles were noted for further follow-up. The phenomenon of osseoperception remains a matter of debate, so the search strategy mainly focused on articles on osseoperception and tactile sensibility of dental implants. This review presents the histological, neurophysiological, and psychophysical evidence of osseoperception and also the role of mechanoreceptors in osseoperception. RESULTS The literature on osseoperception in dental implants is very scarce. The initial literature search resulted in 90 articles, of which 81 articles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in this systematic review. CONCLUSION Patients restored with implant-supported prostheses reported improved tactile and motor function when compared with patients wearing complete dentures.

Abstract
Accidentally biting hard on a piece of hard foreign object in food is among the causes of tooth fracturing and could be associated with oral sensibility. This study has investigated the effect of chewing speed on the ability to detect a foreign object in food in human. Fourteen healthy subjects were asked to randomly chew one of 10 cooked rice balls, five of which containing a foreign object made from a tiny uncooked rice grain, until they detected the rice grain. Each subject chewed the test foods both at 50 (slow) and 100 (fast) chews min(-1). The accuracy of detection and the number of chews before detection (CBD) were recorded and compared between the two chewing speeds using paired t-tests. The results showed that almost all subjects detected the foreign object by biting. The accuracy of detection was more than 90% and not significantly different between slow and fast chewing but the mean CBD in slow chewing (11·7 ± 1·3 chews) was significantly different from that in fast chewing (20·7 ± 1·9 chews; P < 0·001). The study showed that slow chewers required less number of chews before a foreign object in food could be detected and was, presumably, more effective in detecting the object compared to fast chewers. If each chew bears equal probability of teeth encountering the foreign object, slow chewing might also reduce the chance of accidentally biting hard on the foreign object and fracturing the tooth.

Abstract
Osseointegration of dental implants has been researched extensively, covering various aspects such as bone apposition, biomechanics and microbiology etc however, physiologic integration of implants and the associated prosthesis in the body has received very little attention. This integration is due to the development of a special sensory ability, which is able to restore peripheral sensory feedback mechanism. The underlying mechanism of this so-called 'osseoperception' phenomenon remains a matter of debate. The following article reveals the histological, neurophysiologic and psychophysical aspects of osseoperception. A comprehensive research to provide scientific evidence of osseoperception was carried out using various online resources such as Pubmed, Google scholar etc to retrieve studies published between 1985 to 2014 using the following keywords: "osseoperception", "mechanoreceptors", "tactile sensibility". Published data suggests that a peripheral feedback pathway can be restored with osseointegrated implants. This implant-mediated sensory-motor control may have important clinical implications in the normal functioning of the implant supported prosthesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To systematically review the available literature on the influence of dental implant placement and loading protocols on peri-implant innervation. MATERIAL AND METHODS The database MEDLINE, Cochrane, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS, OpenGrey and hand searching were used to identify the studies published up to July 2013, with a populations, exposures and outcomes (PEO) search strategy using MeSH keywords, focusing on the question: Is there, and if so, what is the effect of time between tooth extraction and implant placement or implant loading on neural fibre content in the peri-implant hard and soft tissues? RESULTS Of 683 titles retrieved based on the standardized search strategy, only 10 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria, five evaluating the innervation of peri-implant epithelium, five elucidating the sensory function in peri-implant bone. Three included studies were considered having a methodology of medium quality and the rest were at low quality. All those papers reported a sensory innervation around osseointegrated implants, either in the bone-implant interface or peri-implant epithelium, which expressed a particular innervation pattern. Compared to unloaded implants or extraction sites without implantation, a significant higher density of nerve fibres around loaded dental implants was confirmed. CONCLUSIONS To date, the published literature describes peri-implant innervation with a distinct pattern in hard and soft tissues. Implant loading seems to increase the density of nerve fibres in peri-implant tissues, with insufficient evidence to distinguish between the innervation patterns following immediate and delayed implant placement and loading protocols. Variability in study design and loading protocols across the literature and a high risk of bias in the studies included may contribute to this inconsistency, revealing the need for more uniformity in reporting, randomized controlled trials, longer observation periods and standardization of protocols.

Abstract
Although neurophysiological and psychophysical proof of osseoperception is accumulating, histomorphometric evidence for the neural mechanisms of functional compensation following immediate and delayed implant loading is still lacking. For this randomized split-mouth study, six mongrel dogs randomly received one of four treatment protocols at 36 implant-recipient sites over 16 weeks (third maxillary incisor, third and fourth mandibular premolar): immediate implant placement and immediate loading (IIP+IL); delayed implant placement and delayed loading (DIP+DL); delayed implant placement and immediate loading (DIP+IL); and natural extraction socket healing (control). Histomorphometry was performed in the peri-implant bone and soft tissues within 300 µm around the implants. Immunocytochemistry and transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm the presence of neural structures and to reveal their ultrastructural characteristics, respectively. Myelinated nerve fibres densely populated the peri-implant crestal gingival and apical regions, although they were also identified in the woven bone and in the osteons near the implant threads. Compared with the control group in the mandible, the group that received IIP+IL showed a higher innervation (in N⋅mm−2, 5.94±1.12 vs. 3.15±0.63, P<0.001) and smaller fibre diameter (in µm, 1.37±0.05 vs. 1.64±0.13, P=0.016), smaller axon diameter (in µm, 0.89±0.05 vs. 1.24±0.10, P=0.009) and g-ratio (0.64±0.04 vs. 0.76±0.05, P<0.001) in the middle region around the implants. Compared with DIP+IL in the mandible, IIP+IL had a higher nerve density (in N⋅mm−2, 13.23±2.54 vs. 9.64±1.86, P=0.027), greater fibre diameter (in µm, 1.32±0.02 vs. 1.20±0.04, P=0.021), greater axon diameter (in µm, 0.92±0.01 vs. 0.89±0.03, P=0.035) and lower g-ratio (0.69±0.01 vs. 0.74±0.01, P=0.033) in the apical region around the implants. It may be assumed that the treatment protocol with IIP+IL is the preferred method to allow optimized peri-implant re-innervation, but further functional measurements are still required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Preoperative planning of mandibular reconstruction has moved from mechanical simulation by dental model casts or stereolithographic models into an almost completely virtual environment. CAD/CAM applications allow a high level of accuracy by providing a custom template-assisted contouring approach for bone flaps. However, the clinical accuracy of CAD reconstruction is limited by the use of prebent reconstruction plates, an analogue step in an otherwise digital workstream. TECHNICAL REPORT In this paper the integration of computerized, numerically-controlled (CNC) milled, patient-specific mandibular plates (PSMP) within the virtual workflow of computer-assisted mandibular free fibula flap reconstruction is illustrated in a clinical case. Intraoperatively, the bone segments as well as the plate arms showed a very good fit. Postoperative CT imaging demonstrated close approximation of the PSMP and fibular segments, and good alignment of native mandible and fibular segments and intersegmentally. Over a follow-up period of 12 months, there was an uneventful course of healing with good bony consolidation. CONCLUSION The virtual design and automated fabrication of patient-specific mandibular reconstruction plates provide the missing link in the virtual workflow of computer-assisted mandibular free fibula flap reconstruction.

Abstract
The fracture of porcelain structures have been related in either natural dentition or implant-supported restorations. Techniques using a composite resin or indirect methods can be used. This article presents a porcelain fracture on implant-supported metal-ceramic restoration. IPS Empress e.max laminate veneer restoration was used to repair the fracture. With this technique, it was possible to restore aesthetics and function, combined with low cost and patient satisfaction.

Abstract
Due to the brittleness and limited tensile strength of the veneering glass-ceramic materials, the methods that combine strong core material (as zirconia or alumina) are still under debate. The present study aims to evaluate the fracture strength and the mechanism of failure through fractographic analysis of single all-ceramic crowns supported by implants. Forty premolar cores were fabricated with CAD/CAM technology using alumina (n = 20) and zirconia (n = 20). The specimens were veneered with glass-ceramic, cemented on titanium abutments, and subjected to loading test until fracture. SEM fractographic analysis was also performed. The fracture load was 1165 (±509) N for alumina and 1638 (±662) N for zirconia with a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.026). Fractographic analysis of alumina-glass-ceramic crowns, showed the presence of catastrophic cracks through the entire thickness of the alumina core; for the zirconia-glass-ceramic crowns, the cracks involved mainly the thickness of the ceramic veneering layer. The sandblast procedure of the zirconia core influenced crack path deflection. Few samples (n = 3) showed limited microcracks of the zirconia core. Zirconia showed a significantly higher fracture strength value in implant-supported restorations, indicating the role played by the high resistant cores for premolar crowns.

Abstract
The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a small fossorial rodent with specialized dentition that is reflected by the large cortical area dedicated to representation of the prominent incisors. Due to naked mole-rats’ behavioral reliance on the incisors for digging and for manipulating objects, as well as their ability to move the lower incisors independently, we hypothesized that expanded somatosensory representations of the incisors would be present within the cerebellum in order to accommodate a greater degree of proprioceptive, cutaneous, and periodontal input. Multiunit electrophysiological recordings targeting the ansiform lobule were used to investigate tactile inputs from receptive fields on the entire body with a focus on the incisors. Similar to other rodents, a fractured somatotopy appeared to be present with discrete representations of the same receptive fields repeated within each folium of the cerebellum. These findings confirm the presence of somatosensory inputs to a large area of the naked mole-rat cerebellum with particularly extensive representations of the lower incisors and mystacial vibrissae. We speculate that these extensive inputs facilitate processing of tactile cues as part of a sensorimotor integration network that optimizes how sensory stimuli are acquired through active exploration and in turn adjusts motor outputs (such as independent movement of the lower incisors). These results highlight the diverse sensory specializations and corresponding brain organizational schemes that have evolved in different mammals to facilitate exploration of and interaction with their environment.

Abstract
Stereognosis has been defined as the appreciation of the form of objects by palpation. Whilst this definition holds good for the manual exploration of objects, it is possible for the shape of objects to be explored intra orally referred to as oral stereognosis. To better understand patients' relative satisfaction with complete dentures, differences in oral stereognostic perception, based on the identification of 6 edible objects was analyzed in a group of 30 edentulous individuals at 3 stages, namely, just before (pre-treatment), 30 min after (30 min post-treatment) and 1 month after (1 month post-treatment) the insertion of new dentures. The time required to identify each object was recorded and the correctness of identification of each object was scored using oral stereognostic score. Descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon signed rank test, Spearman's rank correlation test, Pearson Chi square test was used to statistically analyze the data obtained. OSA scores was significantly increased 1 month post-treatment compared to 30 min post-treatment (p < 0.05). It was found that Oral stereognostic test is reliable for measuring patients' oral stereognostic perception and may be used as one of the clinical aids in appreciating the functional limitations imposed by the prostheses.
