Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cardiac surgery induces systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), leading to higher morbidity and mortality. There are no individualized predictors for worse outcomes or biomarkers for the multifactorial, excessive inflammatory response. The interest of this study was to evaluate whether a systematic use of the SIRS criteria could be used to predict postoperative outcomes beyond infection and sepsis, and if the development of an exaggerated inflammation response could be observed preoperatively. DESIGN The study was observational, with prospectively enrolled patients. SETTING This was a single institution study in a hospital setting combined with laboratory findings. PARTICIPANTS The study included a cohort of 261 volunteer patients. INTERVENTIONS Patients underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, and were followed up to 90 days. Biomarker profiling was run preoperatively. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Altogether, 17 of 261 (6.4%) patients had prolonged SIRS, defined as fulfilling at least 2 criteria on 4 consecutive postoperative days. During hospitalization, postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) was found in 42.2% of patients, and stroke and transient ischemic attack in 3.8% of patients. Prolonged SIRS was a significant predictor of POAF (odds ratio [OR] 4.5, 95% CI 1.2-17.3), 90-day stroke (OR 4.5, 95% CI 1.1-18.0), and mortality (OR 10.7, 95% CI 1.7-68.8). Biomarker assays showed that preoperative nerve growth factor and interleukin 5 levels were associated with prolonged SIRS (OR 5.6, 95%, CI 1.4-23.2 and OR 0.7, 95%, CI 0.4-1.0, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Nerve growth factor and interleukin 5 can be used to predict prolonged systemic inflammatory response, which is associated with POAF, stroke, and mortality.

Abstract
The nerve growth factor (NGF) belongs to the family of neurotrophic factors. Initially discovered as a signaling molecule involved in the survival, protection, differentiation, and proliferation of sympathetic and peripheral sensory neurons, it also participates in the regulation of the immune system and endocrine system. NGF biological activity is due to the binding of two classes of receptors: the tropomyosin-related kinase A (TrkA) and the low-affinity NGF pan-neurotrophin receptor p75. Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) are one of the most frequent mental disorders in developed countries, characterized by heavy drinking, despite the negative effects of alcohol on brain development and cognitive functions that cause individual’s work, medical, legal, educational, and social life problems. In addition, alcohol consumption during pregnancy disrupts the development of the fetal brain causing a wide range of neurobehavioral outcomes collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The rationale of this review is to describe crucial findings on the role of NGF in humans and animals, when exposed to prenatal, chronic alcohol consumption, and on binge drinking.

Abstract
Kawasaki disease (KD) is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. In addition to coronary artery abnormalities, aneurysms and myocarditis, acute KD is also associated with echocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities in 40-80% of patients. Here, we show that these ECG changes are recapitulated in the Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE)-induced KD vasculitis mouse model. LCWE-injected mice developed elevated heart rate and decreased R wave amplitude, with significant differences in prolonged ventricular repolarization. LCWE-injected mice developed cardiac ganglion inflammation, that may affect the impulse-conducting system in the myocardium. Furthermore, serum nerve growth factor (NGF) was significantly elevated in LCWE-injected mice, similar to children with KD vasculitis, associated with increased neural remodeling of the myocardium. ECG abnormalities were prevented by blocking interleukin (IL)-1 signaling with anakinra, and the increase in serum NGF and cardiac neural remodeling were similarly blocked in Il1r1-/- mice and in wild-type mice treated with anakinra. Thus, similar to clinical KD, the LCWE-induced KD vasculitis mouse model also exhibits electrophysiological abnormalities and cardiac neuronal remodeling, and these changes can be prevented by blocking IL-1 signaling. These data support the acceleration of anti-IL-1 therapy trials to benefit KD patients.

Abstract
Tuberous sclerosis is associated with epilepsy that is often refractory. We examined cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations for neurotrophins, nerve growth factor (β-NGF) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in children with infantile spasms between 1997 and 2010. We classified the patients as follows: tuberous sclerosis (n = 5), cryptogenic spasms (n = 6), postinfectious spasms (n = 5) and other symptomatic spasms (n = 22). We had 22 age- and sex-matched controls for CSF-NGF and 14 for CSF-IGF-1. The median of CSF-NGF was higher in those with tuberous sclerosis, 56 (minimum-maximum, 8.0-131) ng/L, in relative to age- and sex-matched controls, 6.7 (0.0-22) ng/L, and symptomatic infantile spasms, 0.0 (0.0-4.5) ng/L or cryptogenic cases of infantile spasms, 6.2 (3.9-8.8) ng/L, respectively. CSF-NGF were highest in children with postinfectious aetiology, 408 (89-778) ng/L. CSF-IGF-1 of tuberous sclerosis, 0.65 (0.35-0.98) μg/L, did not differ from the cryptogenic spasms, 0.68 (0.32-0.87) μg/L, or from age- and sex-matched controls 0.52 (0.22-0.77) μg/L. Patients with tuberous sclerosis and cryptogenic spasms had normal development prior the ACTH therapy. We suggest that increased CSF-NGF might indicate a persistent activation of inflammatory pathways in cortical tubers in tuberous sclerosis and this would reflect in CSF concentrations.

Abstract
Promising studies suggest that defects in synaptic plasticity detected in schizophrenia may be linked to neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative abnormalities and contribute to disease-associated cognitive impairment. We aimed to clarify the role of the synaptic plasticity regulatory proteins, nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptor (NGFR) in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia by comparative analysis of their blood levels and functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding these proteins (NGF and NGFR) in schizophrenia-affected and healthy subjects. Relationships between the selected SNPs' genotypes and NGF and NGFR plasma levels were also assessed. Our results demonstrated a positive association between schizophrenia and the NGF rs6330 as well as the NGFR rs11466155 and rs2072446 SNPs. Also, a negative association between this disorder and NGF rs4839435 as well as NGFR rs734194 was found. In both, haloperidol-treated and antipsychotic-free patients decreased blood levels of the NGF and NGFR were found, and a positive interrelation between rs6330 and rs2072446 carriage and decreased NGF and NGFR levels, respectively, was revealed. In conclusion, our results demonstrate association of schizophrenia with the rs6330, rs4839435 and rs734194, rs11466155, rs2072446 as well as with the decreased blood levels of corresponding proteins. Our findings indicate the implication of alterations in NGFR and NGFR genes in schizophrenia, particularly, in defects of synaptic plasticity. Furthermore, the data obtained suggests that at least in Armenian population the NGF rs6330*T and NGFR rs11466155*T, rs2072446*T alleles might be nominated as risk factors, whereas the NGF rs4839435*A and NGFR rs734194*G alleles might be protective against developing schizophrenia. The NGF and NGFR functional polymorphisms in schizophrenia-affected and healthy subjects were studied. Blood plasma levels of these proteins were also evaluated. Decreased NGF and NGFR levels in schizophrenia patients were detected. The rs6330*T and rs2072446*T carriage was interrelated with low NGF and NGFR levels, respectively. The NGF rs6330*T and NGFR rs11466155*T, rs2072446*T alleles might be nominated as risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A growing number of studies implicate brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), an important promoter of synaptic transmission and neural plasticity, in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. However, the existing data are controversial, that may reflect population differences between studied groups. DESIGN AND METHODS In the present study we performed a comparative analysis of BDNF plasma levels and its relation with rs6265 (G196A; Val66Met) polymorphism of BDNF gene (BDNF) in schizophrenia-affected and healthy subjects (controls) of the Armenian population. To check the influence of antipsychotics on BDNF plasma levels both medicated and non-medicated patients were involved in this study. Patients with paranoid form of schizophrenia chronically treated with typical antipsychotics (n=103), age- and sex-matched controls (n=105), and 25 antipsychotic-naive first-episode schizophrenia patients were involved. The levels of BDNF in the blood plasma were measured with a solid-phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Decreased plasma levels of BDNF in both medicated and non-medicated schizophrenia patients compared to controls were observed. No significant difference in BDNF levels between medicated and non-medicated patients was detected. It was also detected that, compared to individuals homozygous for the standard allele (G/G) of rs6265, carriers of the rs6265 minor allele (A/G+A/A), which is significantly more frequent in schizophrenia patients than in controls, had decreased BDNF levels. CONCLUSIONS The data obtained suggested that the pathogenesis of schizophrenia is characterized by genetically predetermined decreased blood levels of BDNF. These results indicated that genetically determined alterations of neuroimmune modulators may be among the risk factors of schizophrenia and contribute to disease-specific pathologic changes in functional activity of both the neuronal synaptic plasticity and the immune system.

Abstract
The palatine tonsils, nasopharyngeal tonsil (adenoid) and lingual tonsil constitute the major part of Waldeyer's ring, with the tubal tonsils and lateral pharyngeal bands as less prominent components. The lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer's ring is located at the gateway of the respiratory and alimentary tract and belongs to the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). Mucosae-associated lymphoid tissues are richly innervated and the mucosae contain peptidergic nerve endings associated with different types of cells and macrophages. The lymphatic tissue is known to interact with the nervous system and several organs implicated in the host response to a wide range of stressors. This study focuses on the expression of some neurotrophins (NTs), their high- and low-affinity receptors in human adenoid tissues, lingual and palatine tonsils via immunohistochemical analysis, as well as on the expression of some inflammatory cytokines and other tissue growth factors. Light microscopy immunohistochemistry showed human samples to be generally positive for all the NTs investigated (NGF, BDNF, NT-3) and their receptors (TrKA, TrKB and TrKC) with some different expression levels. IL-6, IL1-b, TNF-α, VEGF, ICAM-1 and TGF-b were also investigated by immunohistochemistry. These results suggest the presence of a pattern of neurotrophic innervation in the human lymphatic tissues which may play a role in sustaining inflammatory conditions and in modulating a close interaction between the nervous system and the different immune cellular subtypes. Our data also corroborate previous studies, suggesting that neurotrophins and inflammatory cytokines may mediate functional signals in lymphoid aggregates. In this context, owing to their widespread expression in immune organs and immunocompetent cells, NTs and inflammatory cytokines are potential candidates for a prominent role in the regulation of immune and neuroimmune interactions.

Abstract
Jugulo-tympanic paragangliomas are the most common primary neoplasm of the middle ear, but little is still known about the histological features differentiating the benign and malignant forms. We investigated, with an immunohistochemical procedure, the expression of neurotrophins with their receptors, in fifteen samples of paragangliomas, and MIB-1 in order to consider them as prognostic factors of malignancy. We observed a general positivity for NGF – TrKA – NT4 – TrKC in the cytoplasm, and a strong expression for BDNF in the extracellular space. MIB-1 was moderate in the nucleus of neoplastic cells, weak in the cytoplasm and totally absent in the extracellular space. The comparison between the clinical recurrences and the rate of cytoplasmatic neurotrophins showed strong immunoreactivity in recurrent patients. It should be emphasized that 2 of the 3 recurrences had a wider distribution of the neutrophins, leading to hypothesize the involvement of these substances in the cell proliferation of glomus tumors. Malignant forms of these rare glomus tumors cannot be clearly identified using MIB-1 as a prognostic marker, although we can affirm that neurotrophins and their receptors can be considered as a panel of potential diagnostic markers to monitor the development of such malignancies. Although the small number of patients does not allow definitive conclusions to be made, our findings showed a possible trend towards significance which requires a more powerful study to evaluate this further.

Abstract
Aberrant neurodevelopment contributes to the etiology of schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the potential association of netrin G1 (NTNG1) rs628117 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met (rs6265) genetic polymorphisms with susceptibility to schizophrenia. One hundred three Armenian patients with schizophrenia and 105 healthy control subjects were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers. Whereas the NTNG1 rs628117 genotypes were equally distributed in the groups, the carriers of the less common BDNF 66Met allele were overrepresented among patients with schizophrenia when compared with healthy controls (55% vs 35%, odds ratio = 2.28, 95% confidence interval 1.14-1.98, p(corrected) = 0.006). Furthermore, the 66Met/Met genotype correlated with earlier disease onset (p = 0.024). In conclusion, our single-cohort study nominates the BDNF 66Met allele as a risk factor for schizophrenia in an Armenian population. This must be confirmed in other Armenian cohorts.

Abstract
Gut commensals modulate host immune, endocrine, and metabolic functions. They also affect peripheral and central neural reflexes and function. We have previously shown that daily ingestion of Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) for 9 d inhibits the pseudoaffective cardiac response and spinal single-fiber discharge evoked by visceral distension, and decreases intestinal motility and myenteric AH cell slow afterhyperpolarization (sAHP) by inhibiting a Ca-activated K (IK(Ca)) channel. We tested whether luminal LR could acutely decrease motility in an ex vivo perfusion model of naive Balb/c jejunum. Live LR dose dependently decreased motor complex pressure wave amplitudes with 9- to 16-min onset latency and an IC(50) of 5 × 10(7) cells/ml Krebs. Heat-killed LR or another live commensal, Lactobacillus salivarius, were without effect. The IK(Ca) channel blocker TRAM-34, but neither the opener (DCEBIO) nor the hyperpolarization-activated cationic channel inhibitor ZD7288 (5 μM) (or TTX 1 μM), mimicked the LR effect on motility acutely ex vivo. We provide evidence for a rapid, strain-specific, dose-dependent action of a live Lactobacillus on small intestinal motility reflexes that recapitulates the long-term effects of LR ingestion. These observations may be useful as a first step to unraveling the pathways involved in bacteria to the nervous system communication.

Abstract
Gallbladder carcinoma is the most common biliary tract tumor and the fifth most common gastrointestinal tract cancer. The prognosis of gallbladder carcinoma is poor and less than 5% of the patients are still alive five years postoperatively. Gallbladder specimens were obtained during surgical operations performed in eleven patients for resection of a gallbladder carcinoma, and during five autopsies (control cases selected among patients who died from for other causes, excluding those suffering from biliary or hepatic diseases). Immunohistochemical characterization and distribution of neurotrophins, with their respective receptors, were analyzed. The actual role played by these neurotrophic factors in the general regulation, vascular permeability, algic responsiveness, release of locally active substances and potential tumorigenesis in the gallbladder and biliary ducts compartment remains controversial. Our study revealed an increased immunohistochemical expression of NGF and TrKA in the epithelium and in the epithelial glands of the gallbladder carcinoma together with an evident immunoreactivity for BDNF in the same neoplastic areas. An evident immunoreactivity for NGF, TrKA and BDNF was observed in control specimens of gallbladder obtained during autopsies, whereas a weak or quite absent immunoreactivity was observed in the same specimens for NT4, TrKC and p75. On the contrary an appreciable immunoreactivity for p75 was observed in the specimens harvested from patients with gallbladder carcinoma. We also investigated the expression of some known tumor markers such as MIB-1 (anti Ki-67), CD34 and CA15-3, to identify a possible correlation between the expression of these molecular factors and the prognosis of gallbladder carcinoma. They resulted highly expressed in the stroma (CD34 and CA 15-3) and in the epithelium/epithelial glands (MIB-1) of the neoplastic areas and appeared to be almost absent in the control cases, suggesting that these markers, taken together, could be adopted as a panel of prognostic factors in the evaluation of the gallbladder carcinoma.

Abstract
Twenty consecutive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients (mean age 50.4 +/- 10.5 years; 17 females; mean disease duration 5.78 +/- 3.75 years) enrolled for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) blockers therapy (10 infliximab and 10 etanercept) were selected. Before starting therapy, 3 and 6 months thereafter all patients were evaluated for disease activity score (DAS), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nerve growth factor (NGF), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). After 3 and 6 months a significant reduction in DAS, ESR, CRP, and IL-6 was observed, whereas no significant differences of NGF and BDNF serum levels were found. These preliminary results confirm that TNF-alpha blockers significantly improve disease activity and inflammation in RA; nevertheless further studies are needed to explain the mechanisms regulating NGF and BDNF release in RA patients treated with TNF-alpha blockers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether expression of the four members of the neurotrophin (NT) family and their four corresponding receptors is related to synovial inflammation in patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). MATERIAL AND METHODS Synovial fluid (SF) and serum NTs and their receptors were measured by ELISA. Immunohistochemistry was used for synovial tissue biopsy specimens from patients with SpA, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis (OA). In SpA synovium, immunoreactivity of the receptors trkA and NGFRp75 was also assessed before and after 12 weeks of treatment with the monoclonal anti-tumour necrosis factor alpha antibody, infliximab. RESULTS mRNA transcripts of all NTs and receptors were expressed in the inflamed synovium. At the protein level, brain derived neurotrophic factor and NT-3 were significantly higher in the SF of patients with SpA than in those with OA. In contrast, ELISA of serum samples showed that the highest member in SpA was NT-4. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the NT receptors trkA and NGFRp75 were highly expressed in the inflamed synovium of patients with SpA, correlating with vascularity and lymphoid aggregates, respectively. Additionally, immunoreactivity of both receptors was significantly decreased after infliximab treatment. CONCLUSIONS NTs and their receptors are expressed in inflamed peripheral joints of patients with SpA. Their expression is not constitutive but related to inflammation and they may be involved in the local disease processes.

Abstract
The neurotrophins are a family of polypeptide growth factors that are essential for the development and maintenance of the vertebrate nervous system. In recent years, data have emerged indicating that neurotrophins could have a broader role than their name might suggest. In particular, the putative role of NGF and its receptor TrkA in immune system homeostasis has become a much studied topic, whereas information on the other neurotrophins is scarce in this regard. This paper reviews what is known about the expression and possible functions of neurotrophins and their receptors in different immune tissues and cells, as well as recent data obtained from studies of transgenic mice in our laboratory. Results from studies to date support the idea that neurotrophins may regulate some immune functions. They also play an important role in the development of the thymus and in the survival of thymocytes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Ablation of the enteric glia leads to a fulminant hemorrhagic jejunoileitis. We hypothesized that glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) may be involved in mucosal protection of the gut. Therefore, we examined the regulation of GDNF and its receptor (GFR-alpha1) in colonic inflammation and its effects on colonic epithelial cell apoptosis. METHODS The expression of GDNF and GFR-alpha1 was investigated in experimental colitis of rats and in human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). GDNF-induced activation of Akt (protein kinase B [PKB]) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in the colonic epithelial cell lines HT-29 and SW480 was studied. Furthermore, the antiapoptotic potency of GDNF in SW480 cells was evaluated. RESULTS GDNF was specifically up-regulated in experimental rat colitis and in IBD. In contrast, GFR-alpha1 was constitutively expressed in rat and human colonic epithelium. GDNF potently activated MAPK and Akt (PKB) in colonic epithelial cells. Moreover, GDNF strongly prevented apoptosis in SW480 cells. Our data show that GDNF-mediated protection against apoptosis depends on activation of the MAPK and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt (PKB) pathways. CONCLUSIONS GDNF is up-regulated in IBD and has strong antiapoptotic properties in colonic epithelial cells. This points to a novel role of the neurotrophic factor GDNF for mucosal protection and regeneration in IBD.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease of presumably autoimmune aetiology, is characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal degeneration in the central nervous system. Current treatment concepts target the inflammatory activity, reducing the number of relapses and inflammatory lesions on magnetic resonance imaging as well as the proinflammatory cytokine production in blood lymphocytes. Recently, the neuroprotective aspect of inflammation has been documented and is thought to be mediated by neurotrophins, like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The question whether the in vitro BDNF production in MS patients and healthy controls is influenced by the immunomodulatory agents interferon beta (IFN-beta) and immunoglobulin G (Ig) is addressed. A significantly increased BDNF production in MS patients was found compared with normal controls (mean +/- SD: 492 +/- 172 pg/mL versus 217 +/- 55 pg/mL, P < 0.001). IFN-beta and low-dose Ig had no effect on BDNF production, whereas high-dose Ig reduced in vitro BDNF production in MS patients significantly (to 409 +/- 125 pg/mL, P = 0.001). These in vitro findings might indicate that Igs in high doses potentially interfere with neuroprotective mechanisms despite their potent anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract
Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophic factor, which is expressed both in the nervous system and in peripheral organs. NGF is also present in mast cells, and in B- and T-lymphocytes, and may play a role in the immune cell development and differentiation. Various cytokines have been shown to affect NGF expression, and NGF is elevated in inflammation and in some autoimmune diseases. Here we have studied NGF concentrations in serum of pediatric patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) using a two-site enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We have further correlated the levels of NGF to the inflammatory state of the disease. The mean value of serum NGF in SLE patients was significantly increased compared with controls (3346 vs 627pg/ml). There was a correlation between the activity of SLE and the levels of NGF. The results show that NGF is elevated in childhood SLE and that the levels are correlated with disease activity. The present results suggest that NGF may play a role in the pathogenesis of SLE and may have a prognostic value in evaluating the course of the disease and in outlining the medication.

Abstract
Peripheral inflammation induces p38 MAPK activation in the soma of C fiber nociceptors in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) after 24 hr. Inflammation also increases protein, but not mRNA levels, of the heat-gated ion channel TRPV1 (VR1) in these cells, which is then transported to peripheral but not central C fiber terminals. Inhibiting p38 activation in the DRG reduces the increase in TRPV1 in the DRG and inflamed skin and diminishes inflammation-induced heat hypersensitivity without affecting inflammatory swelling or basal pain sensitivity. p38 activation in the DRG is secondary to peripheral production of NGF during inflammation and is required for NGF-induced increases in TRPV1. The activation of p38 in the DRG following retrograde NGF transport, by increasing TRPV1 levels in nociceptor peripheral terminals in a transcription-independent fashion, contributes to the maintenance of inflammatory heat hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Inflammation in skeletal muscle is a consistent feature of Lyme borreliosis, both in the human disease and experimental models. This study had two goals: to evaluate the expression of selected pro-inflammatory and chemokine genes in skeletal muscle in the Rhesus model of Lyme disease, and to identify unexpected cytokine genes involved in Lyme myositis. Two different techniques for measuring cytokine messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were used to achieve these goals: gene expression microarrays and. real-time RT-PCR (Taqman). Muscle from necropsies and biopsies were used, and were obtained from both infected and uninfected non-human primates (NHPs). Although many cytokines were found expressed in muscle tissue, pro-inflammatory cytokines commonly associated with inflammation were not consistently upregulated in infected muscles relative to uninfected muscles. However, B-lymphocyte chemoattractant (BLC), a chemokine implicated in the trafficking of B-cells into tissue, was increased in expression. This study is the first to extensively characterize cytokine gene expression in chronically inflamed tissue in Lyme borreliosis.

Abstract
The intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii has the capacity to persist in the brain within neurons. In this study we demonstrated that T. gondii infected murine cerebellar neurons in vitro and replicated within these cells. Stimulation with gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and/or tumor necrosis factor (TNF) did not enable neurons to inhibit parasite invasion and replication. Cultured neurons constitutively produced interleukin 1 (IL-1), IL-6, macrophage inflammatory protein 1alpha (MIP-1alpha), and MIP-1beta but not transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1), IL-10, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. Neuronal expression of some cytokines (IL-6, TGF-beta1) and chemokines (MIP-1beta) was regulated by infection and/or by IFN-gamma and TNF.
