Abstract
Gray mold disease, caused by Botrytis cinerea is a major postharvest disease impacting fruits such as strawberries and tomatoes. This study explores the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus spp. as eco-friendly biocontrol agents against B. cinerea. In vitro experiments demonstrated that VOCs from Bacillus sp. LNXM12, B. thuringiensis GBAC46, and B. zhanghouensis LLTC93-VOCs inhibited fungal growth by 61.2%, 40.5%, and 21.6%, respectively, compared to the control. LNXM12 was selected for further experiments due to its highest control efficacy of 58.3% and 76.6% on tomato and strawberry fruits, respectively. The LNXM12 VOCs were identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, and 22 VOCs were identified. Synthetic VOCs with the highest probability percentage, namely ethyloctynol, 3-methyl-2-pentanone (3M2P), 1,3-butadiene-N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and squalene were used in experiments. The results showed that the synthetic VOCs ethyloctynol and 3M2P were highly effective, with an inhibition rate of 56.8 and 57.1% against fungal mycelium radial growth at 120 μg/mL on agar plates. Trypan blue staining revealed strongly disrupted, deeper blue, and lysed mycelium in VOC-treated B. cinerea. The scanning and transmission electron microscope (SEM and TEM) results showed that fungal mycelium was smaller, irregular, and shrunken after synthetic VOC treatments. Furthermore, the synthetic VOCs Ethyloctynol and 3M2P revealed high control efficacy on tomatoes and strawberries infected by B. cinerea. The control efficacy on leaves was 67.2%, 66.1% and 64.5%, 78.4% respectively. Similarly, the control efficiency on fruits was 45.5%, 67.3% and 46.3% 65.1%. The expression of virulence genes in B. cinerea was analyzed, and the results revealed that selected genes BcSpl1, BcXyn11A, BcPG2, BcNoxB, BcNoxR, and BcPG1 were downregulated after VOCs treatment. The overall result revealed novel mechanisms by which Bacillus sp. volatiles control postharvest gray mold disease.

Abstract
This study was carried out to screen the antifungal activity against Colletotrichum acutatum, Colletotrichum dematium, and Colletotrichum coccodes. Bacterial isolate GP-P8 from pepper soil was found to be effective against the tested pathogens with an average inhibition rate of 70.7% in in vitro dual culture assays. 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis result showed that the effective bacterial isolate as Bacillus siamensis. Biochemical characterization of GP-P8 was also performed. According to the results, protease and cellulose, siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, starch hydrolysis, and indole-3-acetic acid production were shown by the GP-P8. Using specific primers, genes involved in the production of antibiotics, such as iturin, fengycin, difficidin, bacilysin, bacillibactin, surfactin, macrolactin, and bacillaene were also detected in B. siamensis GP-P8. Identification and analysis of volatile organic compounds through solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS) revealed that acetoin and 2,3-butanediol were produced by isolate GP-P8. In vivo tests showed that GP-P8 significantly reduced the anthracnose disease caused by C. acutatum, and enhanced the growth of pepper plant. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis of pepper fruits revealed that GP-P8 treated pepper plants showed increased expression of immune genes such as CaPR1, CaPR4, CaNPR1, CaMAPK4, CaJA2, and CaERF53. These results strongly suggest that GP-P8 could be a promising biocontrol agent against pepper anthracnose disease and possibly a pepper plant growth-promoting agent.

Abstract
Previously, microbial communities of five commercial kimchi added with seafood and one kimchi without seafood were analyzed using a culture-independent (CI) method. In the current study, microbial communities of the same samples were analyzed using a culture-dependent (CD) method with two media: tryptic soy agar (TSA) and Lactobacilli de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) agar. MRS agar showed a higher proportion of lactic acid bacteria, while TSA showed a higher proportion of Bacillus species. Leuconostoc mesenteroides became dominant over time except in kimchi added with hongeu (HBK, okamejei kenojei). In the case of HBK, Bacillus was dominant. The low pH of HBK was confirmed by cell size and heat treatment under pH 4-7 conditions that Bacillus could be present in the form of spores. With the CD method, only Lactococcus lactis, Leu. citreum, and Weissella cibaria were detected. With the CI method, only Pediococcus inopinatus was detected. A notable finding was that Leu. mesenteroides was more abundant than Latilactobacillus sakei with the CD method, whereas it was similar or lower with the CI method. This discrepancy was confirmed to be due to different rates of DNA recovered from the two strains. This shows that the assay method may influence the detection of these two strains.

Abstract
The increasing public demand to avoid the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural production systems, causing serious environmental damages, has challenged industry to develop new and effective solutions to manage and control phytopathogens. Biopesticides, particularly microbial-based biopesticides, are a promising new alternative with high biodegradability, specificity, suitability for incorporation into integrated pest management practices, low likelihood of resistance development, and practically no known human health risks. However: expensive production methods, narrow action spectra, susceptibility to environmental conditions, short shelf life, poor storage stability, legislation registry constraints, and general lack of knowledge are slowing down their adoption. In addition to regulatory framework revisions and improved training initiatives, improved preservation methods, thoughtfully designed formulations, and field test validations are needed to offer new microbial- and nematode-based biopesticides with improved efficacy and increased shelf-life. During the last several years, substantial advancements in biopesticide production have been developed. The novelty part of this review written in 2023 is to summarize (i) mechanisms of action of beneficial microorganisms used to increase crop performance and (ii) successful formulation including commercial products for the biological control of phytopathogens based on microorganisms, nematode and/or metabolites.

Abstract
The Bacillus cereus group contains genetically closed bacteria displaying a variety of phenotypic features and lifestyles. The group is mainly known through the properties of three major species: the entomopathogen Bacillus thuringiensis, the animal and human pathogen Bacillus anthracis and the foodborne opportunistic strains of B. cereus sensu stricto. Yet, the actual diversity of the group is far broader and includes multiple lifestyles. Another less-appreciated aspect of B. cereus members lies within their antimicrobial potential which deserves consideration in the context of growing emergence of resistance to antibiotics and pesticides, and makes it crucial to find new sources of antimicrobial molecules. This review presents the state of knowledge on the known antimicrobial compounds of the B. cereus group members, which are grouped according to their chemical features and biosynthetic pathways. The objective is to provide a comprehensive review of the antimicrobial range exhibited by this group of bacteria, underscoring the interest in its potent biocontrol arsenal and encouraging further research in this regard.

Abstract
The identification of antifungal compounds produced by microorganisms is crucial in the context of sustainable agriculture. Bacteria of the genus Bacillus have a broad spectrum of action that can influence plant growth and control pests, vectors of public health relevance and phytopathogens. Lipopeptides are the main compounds related to the biological control of several pathogen species. Strains with biotechnological potential are identified by means of in vitro bioassays and molecular tests. In this study, strains from the Bacillus Bank of Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA/DF/Brazil) were selected to control the fungal pathogens Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Fusarium oxysporum by pairing assays. The detection of genes for biosynthesis of antifungal compounds from strains with high pathogen-inhibition capacity was correlated with peptide synthesis, such as bacillomycin D, fengycin d, bacilysin and surfactin. Their gene expression in contact with the pathogen was analyzed by Real-Time PCR. The volatile organic compounds produced by selected Bacillus strains were identified and quantified. In co-culture assays, the inhibition zone between Bacillus strains and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Thirteen potentially anti-pathogenic strains were selected. Genes related to the synthesis of antifungal peptides were detected in 11 of them. In five strains, all tested genes were detected. Bacillomycin was the most frequently found lipopeptide gene. The fungus-bacteria interaction potentiated the production of volatiles. Several ketones and other volatile compounds with antifungal activity were identified. Relevant morphological changes in the fungus were observed when paired with bacteria. The study demonstrated the efficacy of the selected strains with regard to the biological control of phytopathogens and their biotechnological potential.

Abstract
Fungal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are responsible for fungal odor and play a key role in biological processes and ecological interactions. VOCs represent a promising area of research to find natural metabolites for human exploitation. Pochonia chlamydosporia is a chitosan-resistant nematophagous fungus used in agriculture to control plant pathogens and widely studied in combination with chitosan. The effect of chitosan on the production of VOCs from P. chlamydosporia was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Several growth stages in rice culture medium and different times of exposure to chitosan in modified Czapek-Dox broth cultures were analyzed. GC-MS analysis resulted in the tentative identification of 25 VOCs in the rice experiment and 19 VOCs in the Czapek-Dox broth cultures. The presence of chitosan in at least one of the experimental conditions resulted in the de novo production of 3-methylbutanoic acid and methyl 2,4-dimethylhexanoate, and oct-1-en-3-ol and tetradec-1-ene in the rice and Czapek-Dox experiments, respectively. Other VOCs changed their abundance because of the effect of chitosan and fungal age. Our findings suggest that chitosan can be used as a modulator of the production of VOCs in P. chlamydosporia and that there is also an effect of fungal age and exposure time.

Abstract
A contemporary agricultural production system relying on heavy usage of agrochemicals represents a questionable outlook for sustainable food supply in the future. The visible negative environmental impacts and unforeseen consequences to human and animal health have been requiring a shift towards the novel eco-friendly alternatives for chemical pesticides for a while now. Microbial-based biocontrol agents have shown a promising potential for plant disease management. The bacteria of the genus Bacillus have been among the most exploited microbial active components due to several highly efficient mechanisms of action against plant pathogens, as well as a palette of additional plant-beneficial mechanisms, together with their suitable properties for microbial biopesticide formulations. Among other bioactive metabolites, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been investigated for their biocontrol applications, exhibiting the main advantage of long-distance effect without the necessity for direct contact with plants or pathogens. The aim of this study is to give an overview of the state-of-the-art in the field of Bacillus-based VOCs, especially in terms of their antibacterial, antifungal, and nematicidal action as the main segments determining their potential for biocontrol applications in sustainable agriculture.

However, their capability to withstand harsh conditions (extreme temperature, Ultraviolet (UV) and γ-radiation, and dehydration) and the promiscuous metabolites they synthesize have created increased commercial interest in them as a therapeutic agent, a food preservative, and a plant-pathogen control agent. Nevertheless, the commercial-scale availability of these metabolites is constrained due to challenges in their accessibility via synthesis and low fermentation yields. In the context of this rising in interest, we comprehensively visualized the antimicrobial peptides produced by B. subtilis and highlighted their prospective applications in various industries. Moreover, we proposed and classified these metabolites produced by the B. subtilis group based on their biosynthetic pathways and chemical structures. The biosynthetic pathway, bioactivity, and chemical structure are discussed in detail for each class. We believe that this review will spark a renewed interest in the often disregarded B. subtilis and its remarkable biosynthetic capabilities.

Abstract
Semen coicis is not only a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but also a typical food in China, with significant medical and healthcare value. Because semen coicis is rich in starch and oil, it can be easily contaminated with Aspergillus flavus and its aflatoxins (AFs). Preventing and controlling the contamination of semen coicis with Aspergillus flavus and its aflatoxins is vital to ensuring its safety as a drug and as a food. In this study, the endosphere bacteria Pseudomonas palleroniana strain B-BH16-1 produced volatiles that strongly inhibited the mycelial growth and spore formation activity of A. flavus. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry profiling revealed three volatiles emitted from B-BH16-1, of which 1-undecene was the most abundant. We obtained authentic reference standards for these three volatiles; these significantly reduced mycelial growth and sporulation in Aspergillus, with dimethyl disulfide showing the most robust inhibitory activity. Strain B-BH16-1 was able to completely inhibit the biosynthesis of aflatoxins in semen coicis samples during storage by emitting volatile bioactive components. The microscope revealed severely damaged mycelia and a complete lack of sporulation. This newly identified plant endophyte bacterium was able to strongly inhibit the sporulation and growth of Aspergillus and the synthesis of associated mycotoxins, thus not only providing valuable information regarding an efficient potential strategy for the prevention of A. flavus contamination in TCM and food, but potentially also serving as a reference in the control of toxic fungi.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the biomass production of Bacillus subtilis in flask and bioreactor conditions. It is necessary to carry the culture from the shake flask to the pH, air, temperature and stirring controlled bioreactor in order to reduce the working time and increase the production efficiency and product quality. In this study, Bacillus was isolated from soil and grown under flask and bioreactor conditions as biocontrol agent against Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum. In this process, a pH value of 7.5, 100% O2 saturation, 30% dissolved O2, at the temperature of 37 °C, total flow of 0.1 Lmin-1 and mixing speed of 150 min-1 were preferred for optimal concerning high production yield of B. subtilis in bioreactor. To test whether B. subtilis has antifungal activity on the growth of B. cinerea and F. oxysporum, a dual culture assay in a PDA medium was carried out. Ultimately, high biomass production in a short incubation period by reaching 2.2 µg/mL after 9 h in the bioreactor. It was observed that the bacteria produced in the bioreactor cultivation grew stronger and showed high antifungal activity which resulted 33.33% inhibition percentage against B. cinerea. It was concluded that B. subtilis can be used as a green-fungicide against B. cinerea and F. oxysporum, and bacterial metabolites from B. subtilis could pave the way for the development of next generation green/biopesticides.

Abstract
Fusarium kalimantanense is a genetic lineage of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) and belongs to the Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC). This pathogen is a causative agent of Panama disease, an infection that has caused damage to the banana crop worldwide. Bacillus sp. (LPPC170) showed preliminary antagonist activity against F. kalimantanense (LPPC130) in vitro tests from the cultivation of axenic culture and co-culture with inhibition of mycelial growth of phytopathogen of 41.23%. According to these findings, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from Bacillus sp. were obtained by solid-phase microextraction and identified by gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The multivariate data analysis tool (PLS-DA and Heatmap) identified short-chain organic acids as the main antagonistic VOCs responsible for inhibiting the mycelial growth of LPPC130. Acetic acid, propanoic acid, butanoic acid, valeric acid, and isovaleric acid exhibited a strong inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of LPPC130, with inhibition of 20.68%, 33.30%, 26.87%, 43.71%, and 53.10%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that VOCs caused damage to the vegetative and reproductive structures of the fungus. These results suggest Bacillus LPPC170 as an excellent biocontrol tool against the phytopathogen causative agents of Panama disease.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are secondary metabolites of varied chemical nature that are emitted by living beings and participate in their interactions. In addition, some VOCs called bioactive VOCs cause changes in the metabolism of other living species that share the same environment. In recent years, knowledge on VOCs emitted by Aspergillus flavus, the main species producing aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly harmful mycotoxin, has increased. This review presents an overview of all VOCs identified as a result of A. flavus toxigenic (AFB1-producing) and non-toxigenic (non AFB1-producing) strains growth on different substrates, and the factors influencing their emissions. We also included all bioactive VOCs, mixes of VOCs or volatolomes of microbial species that impact A. flavus growth and/or related AFB1 production. The modes of action of VOCs impacting the fungus development are presented. Finally, the potential applications of VOCs as biocontrol agents in the context of mycotoxin control are discussed.

Abstract
Massoia lactone could be released from liamocins produced by Aureobasidium melanogenum M39. The obtained Massoia lactone was very stable and highly active against many fungal crop pathogens which cause many plant diseases and food unsafety. Massoia lactone treatment not only could effectively inhibit their hyphal growth and spore germination, but also caused pore formation in cell membrane, reduction of ergosterol content, rise in intracellular ROS levels, and leakage of intracellular components, consequently leading to cellular necrosis and cell death. The direct contact of Massoia lactone with Fusarium graminearum spores could stop the development of Fusarium head blight symptom in the diseased wheats. Therefore, Massoia lactone could be a promising candidate for development as an effective and green bio-fungicide because of its high anti-fungal activity and the multiplicity of mode of its action.

Abstract
Though information exists regarding the pathogenesis of the shot-hole disease (SH) in flowering cherry (FC), there has been a lack of research focusing on SH management. Therefore, here, we investigated the inhibitory activities of antagonistic bacteria against SH pathogens both in vitro and in vivo as well as their biochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds. Two biosurfactant-producing bacterial antagonists, identified as Bacillus velezensis strains JCK-1618 and JCK-1696, exhibited the best effects against the growth of both bacterial and fungal SH pathogens in vitro through their cell-free culture filtrates (CFCFs). These two strains also strongly inhibited the growth of the pathogens via the action of their antimicrobial diffusible compounds and antimicrobial volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Crude enzymes, solvent extracts, and biosurfactants of the two strains exhibited antimicrobial activities. Liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis of the partially purified active fractions revealed that the two antagonists produced three cyclic lipopeptides, including iturin A, fengycin A, and surfactin, and a polyketide, oxydifficidin. In a detached leaf assay, pre-treatment and co-treatment of FC leaves with the CFCFs led to a large reduction in the severity of the leaf spots caused by Epicoccum tobaicum and Bukholderia contaminans, respectively. In addition, the two antagonists produced indole-3-acetic acid, siderophore, and a series of hydrolytic enzymes, along with the formation of a substantial biofilm. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the antimicrobial activities of the diffusible compounds and VOCs of B. velezensis against the SH pathogens and their efficiency in the biocontrol of SH.

Abstract
Citrus fruits are the most produced fruits in the world, but they are threatened by several pathogens, including the fungus Phyllosticta citricarpa, the causal agent of citrus black spot (CBS). The fungus affects most citrus species and the infection results in economic losses in citrus-producing areas. This disease causes the aesthetic depreciation of fresh fruit, impairing its commercialization. As an alternative to the use of synthetic fungicides to control the pathogen, the biological control, using bacteria of the genus Bacillus, is highlighted. Such microorganisms enable biocontrol by the production of volatile organic compounds (VOC) or non-volatile. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the production of VOC by isolates of Bacillus spp. grown in different culture media; to evaluate the effects of these compounds on the evolution of CBS lesions in orange fruits; to study the effects of VOC on resistance induction in orange fruits; to evaluate the effects of VOC on P. citricarpa morphology in CBS lesions, and to identify the produced VOC. Tryptone soya agar (TSA) and tryptone soya broth (TSB) media used to culture the bacterium resulted in up to 73% pathogen inhibition by VOC. Volatile compounds from Bacillus spp. ACB-65 and Bacillus spp. ACB-73 when cultured in TSB culture medium provided 86% inhibition of freckles that evolved to hard spots. The volatile fractions produced by the bacteria were identified as alcohols, ketones, amines, ethers, aldehydes and carboxylic acids that can serve as arsenal against the phytopathogen. The present work demonstrated the potential of VOC produced by Bacillus spp. in the control of P. citricarpa.

Abstract
The antagonistic mechanisms of soluble non-volatile bioactive compounds, such as proteins and lipopeptides emitted from Bacillus have been widely studied. However, there are limited studies on the antifungal mechanisms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus against plant fungal diseases. In this study, the antagonistic mechanisms of one specific VOC, 6-methyl-2-heptanone, against Alternaria solani were investigated. To optimize the extraction conditions of headspace solid-phase microextraction, a 50/30-μm divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fiber at 50°C for 40 min was used. For gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using a free fatty acid phase capillary column, 6-methyl-2-heptanone accounted for the highest content, at 22.27%, of the total VOCs from Bacillus subtilis ZD01, which inhibited A. solani mycelial growth strongly in vitro. Therefore, 6-methyl-2-heptanone was selected as the main active chemical to elucidate the action mechanisms against A. solani. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that after exposure to an EC50 dose of 6-methyl-2-heptanone, A. solani hyphal cells had a wide range of abnormalities. 6-Methyl-2-heptanone also caused the capture of cellular fluorescent green label and the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from outer membranes A. solani cells, which may enhance 6-methyl-2-heptanone ability to reach the cytoplasmic membrane. In addition, 6-methyl-2-heptanone showed strong inhibitory effect on A. solani conidial germination. It also damaged conidial internal structures, with the treated group having collapsed shrunken small vesicles as observed by transmission electron microscopy. Because 6-methyl-2-heptanone showed strong effects on mycelial integrity and conidial structure, the expression levels of related pathogenic genes in A. solani treated with 6-methyl-2-heptanone were investigated. The qRT-PCR results showed that transcriptional expression levels of slt2 and wetA genes were strongly down-regulated after exposure to 6-methyl-2-heptanone. Finally, because identifying the functions of pathogenic genes will be important for the biological control of A. solani, the wetA gene was identified as a conidia-associated gene that plays roles in regulating sporulation yield and conidial maturation. These findings provide further insights into the mechanisms of VOCs secreted by Bacillus against A. solani.

Abstract
Several studies have reported that bacteria produce anti-fungal volatiles. We identified the organic volatile compounds produced by six cacao endophytic bacteria (CEB) strains (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CFFSUR-B35, Bacillus megaterium CFFSUR-B32, Bacillus muralis CFFSUR-B39, Bacillus pumilus CFFSUR-B34, Bacillus subtilis CFFSUR-B31, and Novosphingobium lindaniclasticum CFFSUR-B36). We evaluated their inhibitory effect on mycelium growth and spore germination of the phytopathogenic fungus Moniliophtora roreri. The volatiles produced by these six CEB, were collected and identified by SPME and GC-MS. Moreover, the inhibitory effect of five synthetic volatile organic compounds, individually and in mixtures (dimethyl disulfide, 2-5 dimethyl pyrazine, α-pinene, 2-heptanone and 2-ethyl hexanol) on M. roreri mycelium growth and spore germination was evaluated. All strains examined produced volatiles in different amounts; 13 to 10 compounds were identified, including sulfide, alcohol benzene derivate, pyrazine, ketone, nitrogen and terpene compounds. The B. subtilis CFFSUR-B31 strain produced the largest number of volatiles, while B. pumilus CFFSUR-B34 produced the fewest and the lowest amounts. The volatile organic compounds produced by B. pumilus CFFSUR-B34, B. muralis CFFSUR-B39 and N. lindaniclasticum CFFSUR-B36 inhibited M. roreri mycelium growth by more than 35%, sporulation by more than 81% and spore germination by more than 74%. However, when synthetic compounds were evaluated individually and in mixtures, 2-ethyl hexanol at 100,000 ppm (20 mg/filter paper disc) inhibited M. roreri mycelium growth by 100%, followed by organic volatile compound mixtures C (dimethyl disulfide, 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, α-pinene, 2-ethyl-hexanol, 2-Heptanone) and D (only the top four) at 100,000 ppm (4 and 5 mg/filter paper disc) which inhibited spore germination by 97 and 89%, respectively.

Abstract
Nocardiopsis are actinobacteria which produce active compounds, such as antifungals and volatile compounds. Ganoderma boninense is a pathogenic and aggressive fungus that decreases palm oil yield during production. In this study, we isolated two strains of Nocardia (GME01 and GME22) from airborne contaminants on the actinobacteria culture collection in the laboratory. The aim of this study is to identify two strains of Nocardiopsis and to obtain the antifungal potency of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) against G. boninese. We characterized the morphology using Scanning Electrone Microscope (SEM), molecular properties and whole-cell protein spectra using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), antifungal assay on G. boninense and VOCs analysis of Nocardia using solid phase micro extraction/gas chromatography (SPME/GC). The two Nocardiopsis strains had the similar characteristic such as white aerial mycelium and spores, aerobic, grow well on ISP-2, TSA and NA medium without diffusible pigment and had the highest similarity with Nocardiopsis alba DSM 43377 (99.63% and 99.55% similarity for GME01 and GME22, respectively), Different morphological feature was found in aerial mycelium and spores. GME22 has a clearly fragmented mycelium whereas GME01 has none. Other features also showed different on the whole-cell protein spectra, antifungal activity and VOCs profiles. Antifungal activity assay on G. boninense showed that N. alba GME22 has higher antifungal activity than GME01 related with the VOCs abundance in two strains. Almost 38.3% (18 VOCs) of N. alba GME22 and 25.5% (12 VOCs) of N. alba GME01 were found specifically in each strain, and 36.2% (the 17 same VOCs) produced by both. The known volatile antifungal compounds S-methyl ethanethioate, 1,2-dimethyldisulfane, acetic acid, 2-methyl propanoic acid, 3-methyl-butanoic acid, nonan-2-one, undecan-2-one and 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexan-1-ol only produced by N. alba GME22 and 1,3-dimethyltrisulfane only produced by N. alba GME01. A total of two known antifungal compounds 1,2-dimethyldisulfane and 6-methylheptan-2-one were produced by both N. alba. The abundance of antifungal VOCs produced by these bacteria is potentially to be used as biocontrol agent for pathogenic fungi in plants.

Abstract
Phytopathogenic fungal growth in postharvest fruits and vegetables is responsible for 20-25% of production losses. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been gaining importance in the food industry as a safe and ecofriendly alternative to pesticides for combating these phytopathogenic fungi. In this study, we analysed the ability of some VOCs produced by strains of the genera Bacillus, Peribacillus, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacillus and Staphylococcus to inhibit the growth of Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Monilinia fructicola, Monilinia laxa and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, in vitro and in vivo. We analysed bacterial VOCs by using GC/MS and 87 volatile compounds were identified, in particular acetoin, acetic acid, 2,3-butanediol, isopentanol, dimethyl disulphide and isopentyl isobutanoate. In vitro growth inhibition assays and in vivo experiments using cherry fruits showed that the best producers of VOCs, Bacillus atrophaeus L193, Bacillus velezensis XT1 and Psychrobacillus vulpis Z8, exhibited the highest antifungal activity against B. cinerea, M. fructicola and M. laxa, which highlights the potential of these strains to control postharvest diseases. Transmission electron microscopy micrographs of bacterial VOC-treated fungi clearly showed antifungal activity which led to an intense degeneration of cellular components of mycelium and cell death.

Abstract
Black spot disease caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata is destructive to the production, transportation, and storage of sweet potato. The antifungal effects of Bacillus tequilensis XK29 against C. fimbriata through volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated in this study. The activated carbon assay proved that XK29 could exert antibiotic effects through volatiles. By optimizing the wheat seed weight, inoculation method, concentration, volume, and time, the antifungal activity of XK29 was significantly improved. XK29 fumigation inhibited spore formation and germination and changed the cell morphology of C. fimbriata. During the storage of sweet potato tuber roots, XK29 effectively controlled black spot disease and reduced the weight loss and malondialdehyde content. Metabolomic analysis revealed that 21 volatile compounds were released from XK29. Isovaleric acid, isobutyric acid, and 2-methylbutanoic acid effectively inhibited the growth of C. fimbriata. These results indicate that B. tequilensis XK29 has a good potential to be developed as a microbial fumigation agent.

Abstract
Heavy reliance on synthetic pesticides for crop protection has become increasingly unsustainable, calling for robust alternative strategies that do not degrade the environment and vital ecosystem services. There are numerous reports of successful disease control by various microbes used in small-scale trials. However, inconsistent efficacy has hampered their large-scale application. A better understanding of how beneficial microbes interact with plants, other microbes, and the environment and which factors affect disease control efficacy is crucial to deploy microbial agents as effective and reliable pesticide alternatives. Diverse metabolites produced by plants and microbes participate in pathogenesis and defense, regulate the growth and development of themselves and neighboring organisms, help maintain cellular homeostasis under various environmental conditions, and affect the assembly and activity of plant and soil microbiomes. However, research on the metabolites associated with plant health-related processes, except antibiotics, has not received adequate attention. This review highlights several classes of metabolites known or suspected to affect plant health, focusing on those associated with biocontrol and belowground plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions. The review also describes how new insights from systematic explorations of the diversity and mechanism of action of bioactive metabolites can be harnessed to develop novel crop protection strategies.

Abstract
AIM The genus Fusarium comprises plant pathogenic species with agricultural relevance. Fusarium oxysporum causes tomato wilt disease with significant production losses. The use of agrochemicals to control the Fusarium wilt of tomato is not environmentally friendly. Bacillus species, as biocontrol agents, provide a safe and sustainable means to control Fusarium-induced plant diseases. In this study, the ability of Bacillus cereus MH778713, a strain isolated from root nodules of Prosopis laevigata, to protect tomato plants against Fusarium wilt was evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS Bacillus cereus MH778713 and its volatiles inhibited the radial growth of F. oxysporum and stimulated tomato seedling growth in in vitro and in vivo tests. When tomato plants growing in the greenhouse were inoculated with B. cereus MH778713, the percentage of wilted plants decreased from 96% to 12%, indicating an effective crop protection against Fusarium wilt. Among the metabolites produced by B. cereus MH778713, hentriacontane and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol promoted tomato seedling growth and showed antifungal activity against the target pathogen. CONCLUSION The inoculation of B. cereus MH778713 on tomato seedlings helped plants to manage Fusarium wilt, suggesting the potential of B. cereus MH778713 as a biocontrol agent. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These results complement our previous studies on chromium tolerance and bioremediation traits of B. cereus MH778713 by highlighting the potential of this metal-resistant micro-organism to boost crop growth and disease resistance.

Abstract
Table grapes (Vitis vinifera) are affected by botrytis bunch rot and summer bunch rot, the latter a complex disease caused by Botrytis cinerea, Aspergillus spp., Penicillium expansum and Rhizopus stolonifer. To search for biocontrol alternatives, a new bioproduct composed of Gluconobacter cerinus and Hanseniaspora osmophila, a consortium called PUCV-VBL, was developed for the control of fungal rots in table grapes. Since this consortium presents new biocontrol species, the effect of their VOCs (volatile organic compounds) was evaluated under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The VOCs produced by the PUCV-VBL consortium showed the highest mycelial inhibition against Botrytis cinerea (86%). Furthermore, H. osmophila was able to inhibit sporulation of A. tubingensis and P. expansum. VOCs' effect in vivo was evaluated using berries from Red Globe, Thompson Seedless and Crimson Seedless grapes cultivars, demonstrating a mycelial inhibition by VOCs greater than 70% for all evaluated fungal species. The VOC identification of the PUCV-VBL consortium was analyzed by solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GCMS). A total 26 compounds were identified, including 1-butanol 3-methyl, propanoic acid ethyl ester, ethyl acetate, phenylethyl alcohol, isobutyl acetate and hexanoic acid ethyl ester. Our results show that VOCs are an important mode of action of the PUCV-VBL biological consortium.

Abstract
Soilborne fungal diseases are most common among vegetable crops and have major implications for crop yield and productivity. Eco-friendly sustainable agriculture practices that can overcome biotic and abiotic stresses are of prime importance. In this study, we evaluated the ability of plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) Bacillus aryabhattai strain SRB02 to control the effects of tomato wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (strain KACC40032) and promote plant growth. In vitro bioassays showed significant inhibition of fungal growth by SRB02. Inoculation of susceptible and tolerant tomato cultivars in the presence of SRB02 showed significant protection of the cultivar that was susceptible to infection and promotion of plant growth and biomass production in both of the cultivars. Further analysis of SRB02-treated plants revealed a significantly higher production of amino acids following infection by F. oxysporum. Analysis of plant defense hormones after inoculation by the pathogen revealed a significantly higher accumulation of salicylic acid (SA), with a concomitant reduction in jasmonic acid (JA). These results indicate that B. aryabhattai strain SRB02 reduces the effects of Fusarium wilt disease in tomato by modulating endogenous phytohormones and amino acid levels.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of some fungal species and represent important contaminants of food and feed. This study aimed to explore the biological control activity of Bacillus megaterium BM344-1 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the growth and mycotoxin production of single representatives of the toxigenic species Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus carbonarius, Penicillium verrucosum, and Fusarium verticillioides. In vitro co-incubation experiments indicated the P. verrucosum isolate as the most sensitive one, with a growth inhibition ratio of 66.7%, followed by A. flavus (29.4%) and F. verticillioides (18.2%). Exposure of A. flavus, P. verrucosum, and F. verticillioides to BM344-1 VOCs resulted in complete inhibition of aflatoxins (AFB1, AFG1, and AFG2), ochratoxin A, and fumonisin B1 (FB1) synthesis on artificial media, respectively. In vivo experiments on maize kernels showed 51% inhibition of fungal growth on ears simultaneously infected with A. flavus spores and exposed to BM344-1 volatiles. Likewise, AF synthesis by A. flavus was significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited (25.34 ± 6.72 μg/kg) by bacterial volatiles as compared to that in control maize ears (91.81 ± 29.10 μg/kg). Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry-based analysis of headspace volatiles revealed hexadecanoic acid methyl ester (palmitic acid) and tetracosane as bioactive compounds in the BM344-1 volatilome. Bacterial volatiles have promising potential to control the growth and mycotoxin synthesis of toxigenic fungi and may present valuable aid in the efforts to warrant food and feed safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soybean meal (SBM) is the most common protein source used in the poultry and livestock industries. It has high-quality protein, an excellent amino acid (AA) profile, and positive isoflavone properties. However, the antigen proteins in SBM are unsuitable for young animals. The objective of this study was to identify a Bacillus strain that can degrade soybean antigen proteins, and to evaluate the feasibility of its application in SBM fermentation. RESULTS Bacillus velezensis DP-2 was isolated from Douchi, a fermented Chinese food. It degraded 96.14% and 66.51% of glycinin and β-conglycinin, and increased the trichloroacetic acid-soluble protein (TCAN) content by 5.46 times in the SBM medium. DP-2 could secrete alkaline protease and neutral protease, with productivities of 5.85 and 5.99 U mL-1 . It had broad-spectrum, antibacterial activities against Rhizopus nigricans HR, Fusarium oxysporum ACCC37404, Penicillium digitatum SQ2, Aspergillus flavus C1, Aspergillus niger ACCC30005, Trichoderma viride YZ1, Candida tropicalis CICC1630, and Salmonella sp. ZY. For SBM fermentation, the optimal inoculum rate, temperature, and fermentation time of DP-2 were 2.21 × 107 CFU g-1 , 37 °C, and 48 h, respectively. The fermented soybean meal (FSBM) was cream-colored and glutinous. Its crude protein (CP), soluble protein, and TCA-N content were improved by 13.45%, 12.53%, and 6.37 times, respectively. The glycinin and β-conglycinin content were reduced by 78.00% and 43.07%, respectively, compared with raw SBM. CONCLUSIONS Bacillus velezensis DP-2 has potential as a starter culture for SBM fermentation. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Antifungal Effect of Volatile Organic Compounds from Bacillus velezensis CT32 against Verticillium dahliae and Fusarium oxysporum. Processes (Basel) 2020. Abstract
The present study focuses on the inhibitory effect of volatile metabolites released by Bacillus velezensis CT32 on Verticillium dahliae and Fusarium oxysporum, the causal agents of strawberry vascular wilt. The CT32 strain was isolated from maize straw compost tea and identified as B. velezensis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Bioassays conducted in sealed plates revealed that the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by the strain CT32 possessed broad-spectrum antifungal activity against eight phytopathogenic fungi. The volatile profile of strain CT32 was obtained by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 30 volatile compounds were identified, six of which have not previously been detected in bacteria or fungi: (Z)-5-undecene, decyl formate, 2,4-dimethyl-6-tert-butylphenol, dodecanenitrile, 2-methylpentadecane and 2,2’,5,5’-tetramethyl-1,1’-biphenyl. Pure compounds were tested in vitro for their inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of V. dahliae and F. oxysporum. Decanal, benzothiazole, 3-undecanone, 2-undecanone, 2-undecanol, undecanal and 2,4-dimethyl-6-tert-butylphenol showed high antifungal activity, with benzothiazole and 2,4-dimethyl-6-tert-butylphenol being the most potent compounds. These results indicate that the VOCs produced by B. velezensis CT32 have the potential to be used as a biofumigant for management of vascular wilt pathogens.

Abstract
Bacillus mycoides strain BM02 originally isolated from the tomato rhizosphere was found to have beneficial functions in tomato by promoting plant growth and reducing the severity of Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol). Cytological experiments demonstrated B. mycoides BM02 reduced Fol invasion by reducing spore attachment and increasing hyphal deformation in hydroponics-grown tomato root tissues. Two volatile antifungal compounds, phenylacetic acid (PAA) and methylphenyl acetate (MPA), were identified from the culture filtrates of B. mycoides BM02 by GC-MS analysis. Chemically synthesized PAA, and to a lower extent MPA, suppressed spore germination but have no effects on the hyphal growth of Fol. Our results indicated that the biocontrol agent B. mycoides BM02 produced an array of bioactive compounds including PAA and MPA to suppress plant diseases caused by Fol and other pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract
Trichoderma spp. are known as biocontrol agents of fungal plant pathogens and have been recognized as a potential source of bioactive metabolites. The production of antimicrobial substances from strains T. atroviride (TS) and T. asperellum (IMI 393899) was investigated. The bioactivity of 10- and 30-day culture filtrate extracted with ethyl acetate was assessed against a set of pathogenic fungi and oomycetes. The 30-day extracts of both strains had significant cytotoxic effects against the tested pathogens, with values of minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) ranging between 0.19 and 6.25 mg/mL. Dual culture assay (direct contact and nondirect contact) and the percentage inhibition of radial growth (PIRG) was calculated. The highest PIRG values were 76% and 81% (direct contact) with IMI 393899 and TS, respectively. Nondirect contact does not show inhibition on any of pathogens tested, indicating that the inhibition is not due to the secretion of volatile substances. Culture filtrates were analyzed by GC-MS and HPLC-Q-TOF-MS for the identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nonvolatile organic compounds (nVOCs), respectively. Seven classes of VOCs and 12 molecules of nVOCs were identified. These results indicate that these strains of Trichoderma had antimicrobial activities and they are potential natural sources of compounds with biological activity.

Abstract
The dynamics of volatilomes emitted during the interaction between plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and the phytopathogen Fusarium solani were evaluated for 5 days. The first screening was done to evaluate the antagonist activity of volatile compounds emitted by PGPB against F. solani. Volatilomes from 11 PGPB were determined individually and together with F. solani by using solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. Isolates of PGPB belonged to the Bacillus genus and inhibited from 18 to 24% the fungal mycelium growth. The isolates also induced morphological alterations of fungal hyphae, like small globular vesicles and the formation of chlamydospores, suggesting a stress mechanism response by the fungus. Volatilome profile showed 49 different compounds that appeared in the bacterial-fungal interaction, such as ketones, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenoids, alkanes, alkenes, carboxylic acids, and fatty acids. Some ketones and alcohols were detected in high abundance only in the interaction PGPB-fungus at 3 and 5 days. Bacillus circulans A19, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens A21, and Bacillus wiedmannii S18 shared a group of emitted alcohols and ketones when they were exposed to F. solani. F. solani produced its own volatilome profile, with the presence of sesquiterpenes, such as α-cubebene and caryophyllene, which increased significantly in co-incubation with the tested bacteria, suggesting chemical communication between them.

Abstract
Loquat fruit is one of the most perishable fruits in China, and has a very limited shelf life because of mechanical injury and microbial decay. Due to an increasing concern about human health and environmental security, antagonistic microorganisms have been a potential alternative for fungicides to control postharvest diseases. In this work, the antifungal effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus methylotrophicus BCN2 and Bacillus thuringiensis BCN10 against five postharvest pathogens isolated from loquat fruit, Fusarium oxysporum, Botryosphaeria sp., Trichoderma atroviride, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Penicillium expansum were evaluated by in vitro and in vivo experiments. As a result, the VOCs released by BCN2 and BCN10 were able to suppress the mycelial growth of all targeted pathogens according to inhibition ratio in the double petri-dish assay as well as disease incidence and disease diameter on loquat fruits. The main volatile compounds were identified by solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-gas chromatography. These VOCs produced by the two strains played complementary roles in controlling these five molds and enabled loquat fruits to keep fresh for ten days, significantly. This research will provide a theoretic foundation and technical support for exploring the functional components of VOCs applicable in loquat fruit preservation.

Abstract
Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria attain increasing importance in agriculture as biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. These properties significantly depend on the formation of bioactive compounds produced by such organisms. In our work we investigated the biosynthetic potential of 13 industrially important strains of the Bacillus subtilis complex by mass spectrometric methodology. Typing of these organisms was performed with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry followed by comprehensive profiling of their bioactive peptide products. Volatiles were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Representative products of the members of the B. subtilis complex investigated in detail were: the surfactin familiy (surfactins, lichenysins, pumilacidins); the iturin family (iturins, mycosubtilins and bacillomycins); plantazolicin and the dual lantibiotics lichenicidins, as well as a wide spectrum of volatiles, such as hydrocarbons (alkanes/alkenes), alcohols, ketones, sulfur-containing compounds and pyrazines. The subcomplexes of the B. subtilis organizational unit; (a) B. subtilis/Bacillus atrophaeus; (b) B. amyloliquefaciens/B. velezensis; (c) B. licheniformis, and (d) B. pumilus are equipped with specific sets of these compounds which are the basis for the evaluation of their biotechnological and agricultural usage. The 13 test strains were evaluated in field trials for growth promotion of potato and maize plants. All of the implemented strains showed efficient growth stimulation of these plants. The highest effects were obtained with B. velezensis, B. subtilis, and B. atrophaeus strains.

Abstract
In this study we assessed the efficacy of chitosan (CHI) (2%) emulsion added with Ruta graveolens L. essential oil (REO) at different concentrations (0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%) to control C. gloesporioides grows both "in situ" and "in vitro" in papaya Maradol (Carica papaya L.). In vitro studies showed a decrease on fungal growth (mycelia diameter) with the increase of REO concentration, while 0.5% of REO induce a reduction of 56.42%, REO at 1.0% and 1.5% induced a reduction of 97%. Microscopic analysis showed irreversible deleterious morphological and ultrastructural alterations as well as changes in conidia morphology, and conidia germination inhibition up to 90%. Among the most abundant REO constituents, 2-Nonanol showed strong antifungal activity followed by 2-Undecanone, Benzyl acetate, 2-Nonanone, 2-Tridecanone and 2-Dodecanone. Studies "in situ" on papaya fruit during 12 days at 20 °C, showed a reduction of the C. gloesporioides lesion expansion by 50% using CHI-REO 0.5% emulsions and by 100% with treatments of CHI-REO 1.0 and 1.5%, in addition the emulsions were efficacious to reduce the fruit surface microbiota. On the other hand, physicochemical analysis of the papaya fruits demonstrated that CHI-REO emulsions treatment delayed papaya ripening without affecting the organoleptic characteristics. All these results demonstrated for the first time the application of coatings CHI-REO as a postharvest treatment for the control of anthracnose on papaya fruit.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are produced by plants, fungi, bacteria and animals. These compounds are metabolites originated mainly in catabolic reactions and can be involved in biological processes. In this study, the airborne effects of five monoterpenes (α-pinene, limonene, eucalyptol, linalool, and menthol) on the growth and oxidative status of the rhizobial strain Rhizobium leguminosarum E20-8 were studied, testing the hypothesis that these VOCs could influence Rhizobium growth and tolerance to cadmium. The tested monoterpenes were reported to have diverse effects, such as antibacterial activity (linalool, limonene, α-pinene, eucalyptol), modulation of antioxidant response or antioxidant properties (α-pinene and menthol). Our results showed that non-stressed cells of Rhizobium E20-8 have different responses (growth, cell damage and biochemistry) to monoterpenes, with α-pinene and eucalyptol increasing colonies growth. In stressed cells the majority of monoterpenes failed to minimize the detrimental effects of Cd and increased damage, decreased growth and altered cell biochemistry were observed. However, limonene (1 and 100 mM) and eucalyptol (100 nM) were able to increase the growth of Cd-stressed cells. Our study evidences the influence at-a-distance that organisms able to produce monoterpenes may have on the growth and tolerance of bacterial cells challenged by different environmental conditions.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis releases a broad range of volatile secondary metabolites, which are considered as long- and short distance infochemical signals mediating inter- and intra-specific processes. In addition, they often show antimicrobial or antifungal activities. This review attempts to summarize yet known volatile secondary metabolites produced and emitted by Bacillus subtilis isolates focusing on the structural diversity and distribution patterns. Using in vitro volatile-collection systems, 26 strains of B. subtilis isolated from different habitats were found to produce in total 231 volatile secondary metabolites. These volatile secondary metabolites comprised mainly hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, aldehydes, ester, acids, aromatics, sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds. Reviewed data revealed to a great extent isolate-specific emission patterns. The production and release of several volatile bioactive compounds was retained in isolates of the species B. subtilis, while volatiles without a described function seemed to be isolate-specifically produced. Detailed analysis, however, also indicated that the original data were strongly influenced by insufficient descriptions of the bacterial isolates, heterogeneous and poorly documented culture conditions as well as sampling techniques and inadequate compound identification. In order to get deeper insight into the nature, diversity, and ecological function of volatile secondary metabolites produced by B. subtilis, it will be necessary to follow well-documented workflows and fulfill state-of-the-art standards to unambiguously identify the volatile metabolites. Future research should consider the dynamic of a bacterial culture leading to differences in cell morphology and cell development. Single cell investigations could help to attribute certain volatile metabolites to defined cell forms and developmental stages.

Abstract
Although the use of crop-associated bacteria as biological control agents of fungal diseases has gained increasing interest, the biotechnological potential of forest tree-associated microbes and their natural products has scarcely been investigated. The objective of this study was to identify bacteria or bacterial products with antagonistic activity against Fusarium solani and Fusarium kuroshium, causal agent of Fusarium dieback, by screening the rhizosphere and phyllosphere of three Lauraceae species. From 195 bacterial isolates, we identified 32 isolates that significantly reduced the growth of F. solani in vitro, which mostly belonged to bacterial taxa Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Actinobacteria. The antifungal activity of their volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was also evaluated. Bacterial strain Bacillus sp. CCeRi1-002, recovered from the rhizosphere of Aiouea effusa, showed the highest percentage of direct inhibition (62.5 %) of F. solani and produced diffusible compounds that significantly reduced its mycelial growth. HPLC-MS analyses on this strain allowed to tentatively identify bioactive compounds from three lipopeptide groups (iturin, surfactin and fengycin). Bacillus sp. CCeRi1-002 and another strain identified as Pseudomonas sp. significantly inhibited F. solani mycelial growth through the emission of VOCs. Chemical analysis of their volatile profiles indicated the likely presence of 2-nonanone, 2-undecanone, disulfide dimethyl and 1-butanol 3-methyl-, which had been previously reported with antifungal activity. In antagonism assays against F. kuroshium, Bacillus sp. CCeRi1-002 and its diffusible compounds exhibited significant antifungal activity and induced hyphal deformations. Our findings highlight the importance of considering bacteria associated with forest species and the need to include bacterial products in the search for potential antagonists of Fusarium dieback.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the antagonistic activity of Bacillus licheniformis BL350-2 against mycotoxigenic strains of Aspergillus and Penicillium. In vitro coincubation for 5 days indicated Aspergillus westerdijkiae BA1 as the most sensitive strain, with a growth inhibition of 62%, followed by A. carbonarius MG7 (60%), Penicillium verrucosum MC12 (53%), A. niger MC05 (50%), A. flavus CM5 (49%), A. parasiticus SB01 (47%), and A. ochraceus MD1 (44%). Likewise, the majority of the tested strains on exposure to bacterial volatiles showed complete inhibition of mycotoxin synthesis. In vivo assays on maize ears resulted in 88% reduction in A. flavus CM5 growth and complete inhibition of fungal sporulation and aflatoxin accumulation. The GC-MS-based volatile profile showed 3-methyl-1-butanol as the most abundant compound. The findings of the present study advocate that B. licheniformis BL350-2 is suitable as a biocontrol agent against mycotoxigenic fungi, at least during storage of cereal grains.

Abstract
The occurrence of pests and diseases can affect plant health and productivity in ecosystems that are already at risk, such as tropical montane cloud forests. The use of naturally occurring microorganisms is a promising alternative to mitigate forest tree fungal pathogens. The objectives of this study were to isolate rhizobacteria associated with five Lauraceae species from a Mexican tropical montane cloud forest and to evaluate their antifungal activity against Fusarium solani and F. oxysporum. Fifty-six rhizobacterial isolates were assessed for mycelial growth inhibition of Fusarium spp. through dual culture assays. Thirty-three isolates significantly reduced the growth of F. solani, while 21 isolates inhibited that of F. oxysporum. The nine bacterial isolates that inhibited fungal growth by more than 20% were identified through 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis; they belonged to the genera Streptomyces, Arthrobacter, Pseudomonas, and Staphylococcus. The volatile organic compounds (VOC) produced by these nine isolates were evaluated for antifungal activity. Six isolates (Streptomyces sp., Arthrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Staphylococcus spp.) successfully inhibited F. solani mycelial growth by up to 37% through VOC emission, while only the isolate INECOL-21 (Pseudomonas sp.) inhibited F. oxysporum. This work provides information on the microbiota of Mexican Lauraceae and is one of the few studies identifying forest tree-associated microbes with inhibitory activity against tree pathogens.

Abstract
Members of the Scedosporium apiospermum species complex are the second most frequently isolated pathogens after Aspergillus fumigatus from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with fungal pulmonary infections. Even so, the main risk factors for the infection are unrevealed. According to previous studies, bacterial infections might reduce the risk of a fungal infection, but an antibacterial therapy may contribute to the airway colonization by several fungal pathogens. Furthermore, corticosteroids, which are often used to reduce lung inflammation in children and adults with CF, are also proved to enhance the growth of A. fumigatus in vitro. Considering all the above discussed points, we aimed to test how Pseudomonas aeruginosa influences the growth of scedosporia and to investigate the potential effect of commonly applied antibacterial agents and corticosteroids on Scedosporium species. Direct interactions between fungal and bacterial strains were tested using the disk inhibition method. Indirect interactions via volatile compounds were investigated by the plate-in-plate method, while the effect of bacterial media-soluble molecules was tested using a modified cellophane assay and also in liquid culture media conditioned by P. aeruginosa. To test the effect of bacterial signal molecules, antibacterial agents and corticosteroids on the fungal growth, the broth microdilution method was used. We also investigated the germination ability of Scedosporium conidia in the presence of pyocyanin and diffusible signal factor by microscopy. According to our results, P. aeruginosa either inhibited or enhanced the growth of scedosporia depending on the culture conditions and the mode of interactions. When the two pathogens were cultured physically separately from each other in the plate-in-plate tests, the presence of the bacteria was able to stimulate the growth of several fungal isolates. While in direct physical contact, bacterial strains inhibited the fungal growth. This effect might be attributed to bacterial signal molecules, which also proved to inhibit the germination and growth of scedosporia. In addition, antibacterial agents showed growth-promoting, while corticosteroids exhibited growth inhibitory effect on several Scedosporium isolates. These data raise the possibility that a P. aeruginosa infection or a previously administered antibacterial therapy might be able to increase the chance of a Scedosporium colonization in a CF lung.

Abstract
Over the last seven decades, applications using members of the Bacillus subtilis group have emerged in both food processes and crop protection industries. Their ability to form survival endospores and the plethora of antimicrobial compounds they produce has generated an increased industrial interest as food preservatives, therapeutic agents and biopesticides. In the growing context of food biopreservation and biological crop protection, this review suggests a comprehensive way to visualize the antimicrobial spectrum described within the B. subtilis group, including volatile compounds. This classification distinguishes the bioactive metabolites based on their biosynthetic pathways and chemical nature: i.e., ribosomal peptides (RPs), volatile compounds, polyketides (PKs), non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs), and hybrids between PKs and NRPs. For each clade, the chemical structure, biosynthesis and antimicrobial activity are described and exemplified. This review aims at constituting a convenient and updated classification of antimicrobial metabolites from the B. subtilis group, whose complex phylogeny is prone to further development.

Abstract
Recent studies showed that bacterial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role in the suppression of phytopathogens. The ability of VOCs produced by avocado (Persea americana Mill.) rhizobacteria to suppress the growth of common avocado pathogens was therefore investigated. We evaluated the antifungal activity of VOCs emitted by avocado rhizobacteria in a first screening against Fusarium solani, and in subsequent antagonism assays against Fusarium sp. associated with Kuroshio shot hole borer, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Phytophthora cinnamomi, responsible for Fusarium dieback, anthracnosis and Phytophthora root rot in avocado, respectively. We also analyzed the composition of the bacterial volatile profiles by solid phase microextraction (SPME) gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seven isolates, belonging to the bacterial genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas, reduced the mycelial growth of F. solani with inhibition percentages higher than 20%. Isolate HA, related to Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, significantly reduced the mycelial growth of Fusarium sp. and C. gloeosporioides and the mycelium density of P. cinnamomi. Isolates SO and SJJ, also members of the genus Bacillus, reduced Fusarium sp. mycelial growth and induced morphological alterations of fungal hyphae whilst isolate HB, close to B. mycoides, inhibited C. gloeosporioides. The analysis of the volatile profiles revealed the presence of ketones, pyrazines and sulfur-containing compounds, previously reported with antifungal activity. Altogether, our results support the potential of avocado rhizobacteria to act as biocontrol agents of avocado fungal pathogens and emphasize the importance of Bacillus spp. for the control of emerging avocado diseases such as Fusarium dieback.

Abstract
The present study compares for the first time the effects of h-MoO3 and α-MoO3 against two fungal strains: Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. The h-MoO3 nanoparticles were more toxic to both fungi than α-MoO3. The toxic effects of h-MoO3 were more pronounced toward A. flavus, which presented a growth inhibition of 67.4% at 200 mg L-1. The presence of the nanoparticles affected drastically the hyphae morphology by triggering nuclear condensation and compromising the hyphae membrane. Further analysis of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by both fungi in the presence of the nanomaterials indicated important metabolic changes related to programmed cell death. These nanomaterials induced the production of specific antifungal VOCs, such as β-Elemene and t-Cadinol, by the fungi. The production of essential enzymes involved in fungal metabolism, such as acid phosphatase, naphthol-As-BI-phosphohydrolase, β-galactosidase, β-glucosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, reduced significantly in the presence of the nanomaterials. The changes in enzymatic production and VOCs corroborate the fact that these nanoparticles, especially h-MoO3, exert changes in the fungal metabolism, triggering apoptotic-like cell death responses in these fungi.

Abstract
The grain contamination by Aspergillus spp. has been a serious issue. This study exhibited the excellent antifungal effects of the essential oil compounds (EOCs) geraniol and citral against common grain pathogens (A. flavus and A. ochraceus) in vitro and in situ. The inhibitory mechanisms were also evaluated from the perspective of cell membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and Aspergillus spp. growth-related gene expression. Meanwhile, the combined effects of EOCs in the vapor phase and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) were examined to find an alternative preservation method for controlling Aspergillus spp. The results indicated that citral exhibited the antifungal activity mainly by downregulating the sporulation- and growth-related genes for both pathogens. Geraniol displayed inhibitory effectiveness against A. flavus predominantly by inducing the intracellular ROS accumulation and showed toxicity against A. ochraceus principally by changing cell membrane permeability. Furthermore, the synthetic effects of EOCs and MAP (75% CO2 and 25% N2) induced better grain quality than the current commercial fumigant AlP. These findings reveal that EOCs have potential to be a novel grain preservative for further application.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis and B. velezensis are frequently isolated from various niches, including fermented foods, water, and soil. Within the Bacillus subtilis group, B. velezensis and B. subtilis subsp. subtilis have received significant attention as biological resources for biotechnology-associated industries. Nevertheless, radical solutions are urgently needed to identify microbes during their ecological succession to accurately confirm their action at the species or subspecies level in diverse environments, such as fermented materials. Thus, in this study, previously published genome data of the B. subtilis group were compared to exploit species- or subspecies-specific genes for use as improved qPCR targets to detect B. velezensis and B. subtilis subsp. subtilis in kimchi samples. In silico analyses of the selected genes and designed primer sequences, in conjunction with SYBR Green real-time PCR, confirmed the robustness of this newly developed assay. Consequently, this study will allow for new insights into the ontogeny and succession of B. velezensis and B. subtilis subsp. subtilis in various niches. Interestingly, in white kimchi without red pepper powder, neither B. subtilis subsp. subtilis nor B. velezensis was detected.
