Evidence Dorsal Spine Removal is Nonlethal and Unharmful for Largemouth Bass in Florida

Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides, Florida Bass Micropterus floridanus, and their intergrade are socially and economically valuable sport fish. In the southeastern United States, it is customary for fisheries personnel to age black bass Micropterus species using sagittal otoliths, which requires killing the fish. Presently, fisheries managers and black bass anglers show reluctance to sacrifice large individuals. Development of a nonlethal ageing technique would not only allay concerns of sacrificing large black bass, but it could offer a pathway for new research, management, and conservation. We excised dorsal spines III–V from Largemouth Bass in Florida varying from 30 to 57 cm total length to evaluate the effects of the procedure on survival over 35 d. No mortalities were observed for fish with excised dorsal spines, and experiment-wide survival was 0.94 (0.87–1.00; 95% confidence interval). No significant differences in survival, weight change, or incidence of external injuries were observed between control and excised fish. The areas of spine excision healed with no visible infection or inflammation at the conclusion of the experiment. Therefore, dorsal spine removal offers managers a nonlethal option for collecting ageing structures of adult Largemouth Bass in Florida, including large individuals, and this result likely extends to other Micropterus species as well.

Key transitions in morphological development improve age estimates in white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus

We reared white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus under laboratory conditions and found that a random-forest model containing scute counts and total length predicted age significantly better than total length alone. Scute counts are rapid, inexpensive and non-lethal meristics to gather in the field. This technique could improve age estimates of imperilled sturgeon populations.

Fin healing and regeneration in sturgeon

Pectoral fin healing in fin spines and rays were examined in juvenile Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus following three different sampling techniques (n = 8-9 fish per treatment): entire leading fin spine removed, a 1-2 cm portion removed near the point of articulation, or a 1-2 cm portion removed from a secondary fin ray. Also, to determine whether antibiotic treatment influences healing, an additional group of fish (n = 8) was not given an injection of an oxytetracycline (OTC)-based antibiotic following removal of the entire leading fin spine. Following fin sampling, fish from different treatments were mixed equally between three large (4,000 I) recirculating systems and fin-ray healing and mortality were monitored over a 12 month period. To assess healing, blood samples were collected at 4 months to measure immune system responses, radiographs were taken at 4, 8 and 12 months to assess the degree of calcification in regions of damaged fins and fins were analyzed histologically at 12 months. Fish grew from a mean weight of 1.8 to 3.2 kg during the experiment and survival was near 100% in all treatments, with only one fish dying of unknown causes. Leukocyte counts, an indication of health status and survival were similar among treatments and in groups with or without antibiotic injection. Radiographs revealed mineralization took longer in fish with the entire leading fin spine removed and was the slowest near the point of articulation, presumably due to the greater structural support for the pectoral fin at this location. Histological sampling indicated spines and rays had similar healing patterns. Following injury, an orderly matrix of collagen bundles and many evenly spaced scleroblasts were present, transitioning to Sharpey fibres, with concentric layers forming lamellar bone. Healing and mineralization were characterized as periosteal osteogenesis and included embedded osteocytes surrounded by an osteoid seam. Chondroid formation was apparent in a few fractures not associated with treatments. The duration of time for external wound healing and internal mineralization of spines and rays depended on the fin treatment, with the slowest healing observed in fish with the most tissue removed, the entire leading fin spine.

The annual marine feeding aggregation of Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus in the inner Bay of Fundy: population characteristics and movement

Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus aggregate to feed from May to October in Minas Basin (45° N; 64° W), a large, cul-de-sac embayment of the inner Bay of Fundy. The aggregation consists mainly of migrants from the Saint John, NB and Kennebec Rivers, ME (99%). During 2004-2015, 4393 A. oxyrinchus were taken as by-catch by commercial fish trawlers or at intertidal fishing weirs, and 1453 were marked and/or sampled and released. Fork length (L_F ) ranged from 458 to 2670 mm, but 72·5% were <1500 mm. Mass (M) ranged from 0·5 to 58·0 kg. The mass-length relationship for fish ≤50 kg was log₁₀ M = 3·32log₁₀ L_F - 5·71. Observed growth of unsexed A. oxyrinchus recaptured after 1-8 years indicated fish of 90-179 cm L_F grew c. 2-4 cm a year. Ages obtained from pectoral spines were from 4 to 54 years. The Von Bertalanffy growth model predicted K = 0·01 and L_∞ = 5209 mm L_F . Estimated annual mortality was 9·5-10·9%. Aggregation sizes in 2008 and 2013 were 8804 and 9244 individuals, respectively. Fish exhibited high fidelity for yearly return to Minas Basin and population estimates indicated the total at-sea number utilizing the Basin increased from c. 10 700 in 2010 to c. 37 500 in 2015. Abundance in the Basin was greatest along the north shore in spring and along the south shore in summer, suggesting clockwise movement following the residual current structure. Marked individuals were recaptured in other bays of the inner Bay of Fundy, north to Gaspé, Quebec, and south to New Jersey, U.S.A., with 26 recoveries from the Saint John River, NB, spawning run. Fish marked at other Canadian and U.S. sites were also recovered in Minas Basin. Since all A. oxyrinchus migrate into and out of the Basin annually they will be at risk of mortality if planned tidal power turbines are installed in Minas Passage.
