Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most important foodborne pathogens, causing listeriosis, a disease characterized by high mortality rates. This microorganism, commonly found in food production environments and transmitted to humans by consuming contaminated food, has the ability to form biofilms by attaching to a wide variety of surfaces. Traditional hygiene and sanitation procedures are not effective enough to completely remove L. monocytogenes biofilms from food-contact surfaces, which makes them a persistent threat to food safety. Alternative approaches to combating Listeria biofilms are needed, and the use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their antimicrobial compounds shows promise. The present study investigated the effect of Lactobacillus strains, previously isolated from various foods and known to possess antimicrobial properties, on the biofilm formation of L. monocytogenes on three different food-contact surfaces. To study L. monocytogenes IVb ATCC 19115 type, culture was preferred to represent serotype IVb, which is responsible for the vast majority of listeriosis cases. The results demonstrated that cell-free supernatants (CFSs) of LAB strains inhibited biofilm formation by up to 51.57% on polystyrene, 60.96% on stainless steel, and 30.99% on glass surfaces. Moreover, these CFSs were effective in eradicating mature biofilms, with reductions of up to 78.86% on polystyrene, 73.12% on stainless steel, and 72.63% on glass surfaces. The strong inhibition rates of one strain of L. curvatus (P3X) and two strains of L. sakei (8.P1, 28.P2) used in the present study imply that they may provide an alternate technique for managing Listeria biofilms in food production environments.

Abstract
The resistance of biofilms to antibiotics is a key factor that makes bacterial infections unsusceptible to antimicrobial therapy. The results of classical tests of cell sensitivity to antibiotics cannot be used to predict therapeutic success in infections associated with biofilm formation. We describe a simple and rapid method for the real-time evaluation of bacterial biofilm sensitivity to antibiotics, with Pseudomonas putida and ampicillin as examples. The method uses an electric biosensor to detect the difference between changes in the biofilm electric polarizability, thereby evaluating antibiotic sensitivity. The electric signals showed that P. putida biofilms were susceptible to ampicillin and that at high antibiotic concentrations, the biofilms differed markedly in their susceptibility (dose-dependent effect). The sensor also detected differences between biofilms before and after ampicillin treatment. The electric-signal changes enabled us to describe the physical picture of the processes occurring in bacterial biofilms in the presence of ampicillin. The approach used in this study is promising for evaluating the activity of various compounds against biofilms, because it permits a conclusion about the antibiotic sensitivity of biofilm bacteria to be made in real time and in a short period (analysis time, not longer than 20 min). An added strong point is that analysis can be done directly in liquid, without preliminary sample preparation. KEY POINTS: • Sensor system to analyze biofilm antimicrobial susceptibility is described. • The signal change depended on the ampicillin concentration (dose-dependent effect). • The sensor allows real-time determination of the antibiofilm effect of ampicillin.

Abstract
The emergence of antimicrobial resistance remains one of the greatest public health concerns. Biofilm formation has been postulated as a mechanism of microbial pathogens to resist antimicrobial agents. Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) and their metabolites have been proposed to combat bacterial biofilms due to their antimicrobial activity. In this vein, the aim of the present study was to investigate the biofilm removal potential of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) of five wild-type Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus strains, isolated from Greek natural products, in comparison to the commercially available L. rhamnosus GG strain, against biofilms formed by common foodborne pathogens (Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus). The biofilm removal activity of LAB was assessed on a two-day-old mature biofilm using a microtiter plate-based procedure. Both non-neutralized and neutralized CFSs removed biofilms in a concentration-dependent manner. The biofilm removal activity of the non-neutralized CFSs was significantly higher compared to the neutralized CFSs, as expected, with ranges of 60-89% and 30-80%, respectively. The biofilm removal efficiency of L. rhamnosus OLXAL-3 was significantly higher among the wild-type L. rhamnosus strains tested (20-100% v/v). In conclusion, our results suggest the great potential of the application of wild-type L. rhamnosus strain' CFSs as effective natural agents against pathogenic bacterial biofilms.

Abstract
Alternative methods to reduce infectious diseases caused by bacterial pathogens and their virulence factors, biofilm formations, have arisen to reduce the pressure on existing or currently developed disinfectants and antimicrobial agents. The current strategies for reducing the severity of periodontal pathogen-caused disease by using beneficial bacteria and their metabolites are highly desirable. Probiotic strains of lactobacilli related to foods from Thai-fermented foods were selected and their postbiotic metabolites (PM) were isolated with inhibitory activity on periodontal pathogens and their biofilm formation. The PM from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PD18 (PD18 PM) with the highest antagonistic effect against Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Prevotella loescheii was selected from 139 Lactobacillus isolates. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC) values of PD18 PM against the pathogens ranged from 1:2 to 1:4. The PD18 PM demonstrated the ability to prevent the biofilm formation of S. mutans and P. gingivalis by showing a significant reduction in viable cells, high percentages of biofilm inhibition at 92.95 and 89.68%, and the highest effective contact times at 5 and 0.5 min, respectively. L. plantarum PD18 PM showed potential as a promising natural adjunctive agent to inhibit periodontal pathogens and their biofilms.

Abstract
Microorganisms tend to adhere to food contact surfaces and form biofilms, which serve as reservoirs for bacteria that can contaminate food. As part of a biofilm, bacteria are protected from the stressful conditions found during food processing and become tolerant to antimicrobials, including traditional chemical sanitisers and disinfectants. Several studies in the food industry have shown that probiotics can prevent attachment and the consequent biofilm formation by spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. This review discusses the most recent and relevant studies on the effects of probiotics and their metabolites on pre-established biofilms in the food industry. It shows that the use of probiotics is a promising approach to disrupt biofilms formed by a large spectrum of foodborne microorganisms, with Lactiplantibacillus and Lacticaseibacillus being the most tested genera, both in the form of probiotic cells and as sources of cell-free supernatant. The standardisation of anti-biofilm assays for evaluating the potential of probiotics in biofilm control is of extreme importance, enabling more reliable, comparable, and predictable results, thus promoting significant advances in this field.

Abstract
The colon has a very large surface area that is covered by a dense mucus layer. The biomass in the colon includes 500-1000 bacterial species at concentrations of ~1012 colony-forming units per gram of feces. The intestinal epithelial cells and the commensal bacteria in the colon have a symbiotic relationship that results in nutritional support for the epithelial cells by the bacteria and maintenance of the optimal commensal bacterial population by colonic host defenses. Bacteria can form biofilms in the colon, but the exact frequency is uncertain because routine methods to undertake colonoscopy (i.e., bowel preparation) may dislodge these biofilms. Bacteria in biofilms represent a complex community that includes living and dead bacteria and an extracellular matrix composed of polysaccharides, proteins, DNA, and exogenous debris in the colon. The formation of biofilms occurs in benign colonic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. The development of a biofilm might serve as a marker for ongoing colonic inflammation. Alternatively, the development of biofilms could contribute to the pathogenesis of these disorders by providing sanctuaries for pathogenic bacteria and reducing the commensal bacterial population. Therapeutic approaches to patients with benign colonic diseases could include the elimination of biofilms and restoration of normal commensal bacteria populations. However, these studies will be extremely difficult unless investigators can develop noninvasive methods for measuring and identifying biofilms. These methods that might include the measurement of quorum sensing molecules, measurement of bile acids, and identification of bacteria uniquely associated with biofilms in the colon.

Antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of bacteriocin by Lactococcus lactis strain CH3 isolated from fermented dairy products-An in vitro and in silico approach. Abstract
The current study aimed to screen bacteriocin producing LAB from different dairy products and evaluation of their biological properties. Initially, 12 (4-chess, 4-curd, and 4-yohurt) LAB species were isolated and only 4 isolates alone were selected based on their clear yellow halo zone around the colonies in the selective medium. The selected 4 isolates were identified based on their morphological and biochemical characteristics. Among them, the strain CH3 have showed better antimicrobial effects on selected human pathogens. The isolated strain CH3 were further identified as Lactococcus lactis strain CH3 (MZ636710) by SEM imaging and 16 s rRNA molecular sequencing. Bacteriocin was extracted from L. lactis strain CH3 and partially purified using 60 % ammonium sulphate and then completely purified by G-50 column chromatography. The purified bacteriocin showed a specific activity of 5859.37 AU/mg in 24.7 % of recovery and 10.9-fold purification. The molecular weight of bacteriocin was 3.5 kDa as observed in SDS-PAGE. The bacteriocin showed sensitivity to proteolytic enzymes and resistance to high temperature, wide range of pH, organic solvents and detergents. FT-IR spectral studies of bacteriocin detected the existence of OH/NH-stretching, CH, and COC and CO bonds. NMR spectrum showed one doublet and 4 various singlet peaks at different ppm, indicating the occurrence of six amino acids in the structure of purified bacteriocin. The purified bacteriocin have shown stronger antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity against selected human pathogens at 100 μg/mL. SEM showed the evidence of structural deformation and loss of membrane integrity of bacterial cells treated with bacteriocin. Bacteriocin exhibited greater DPPH radical scavenging potential with an EC50 value of 12.5 μg/mL. Bacteriocin have not shown significant toxicity on normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells (83.2 % at 100 μg/ mL). Furthermore, in silico studies using molecular modeling and docking were performed to know the proteins involved in antimicrobial action. The results suggests that bacteriocin could be an alternative to combat AMR pathogens and more suitable for food and dairy industries to preserve food without contamination.

Effect of Bacteriocin (ALC102) of Enterococcus faecium GRD AA on Biofilm Forming Listeria monocytogenes MTCC 657. JOURNAL OF PURE AND APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY 2022. Abstract
Antilisterial bacteriocin producing strain were isolated from milk samples and were subjected to 16S rRNA sequencing and found to be of genus Enterococcus faecium. The bacteriocin ALC102 were partially purified by Amberlite XAD-16 adsorption followed by column chromatography. The biofilm formation capacity of Listeria monocytogenes MTCC 657 were evaluated by tube method and CV binding assay. Biofilm formation on different abiotic substrates were also evaluated. Among three substrates stainless steel had a strong biofilm formation followed by glass and aluminum foil. From the results of biofilm eradication studies, the bacteriocin ALC102 showed almost similar activity of commercial bacteriocin nisin on all the substrates at 45°C, 30°C, 4°C and -20°C. Based on CBD® biofilm eradication assay, the eradication potential of ALC102 and nisin were found to be similar on high (45°C) and freezing (-20°C) temperatures. From the study, antilisterial bacteriocin ALC102 found to be able to inhibit the biofilm formed Listeria monocytogenes MTCC 657 at different temperatures and different incubation periods (24h, 48h and 72h). The biofilm eradication potential of antilisterial bacteriocin ALC102 was similar to nisin. Neither incubation temperature nor incubation period doesn’t altered the activity of the bacteriocin. So this bacteriocin can be considered as a potential competitor in food industry and we strongly recommend the use of this bacteriocin from Enterococcus faecium GRD AA in the food preservation industry to a higher temperature (45°C) to freezing temperature (-20°C).

Abstract
The current study aimed to explore the performance of a probiotic Lactobacillus strain as an adjunct culture in yogurt production and to assess Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as a rapid, noninvasive analytical technique to evaluate the quality and the shelf life of yogurt during storage. In this respect, bovine milk (full-fat) was inoculated with the typical yogurt starter culture without (control case) or with the further addition of Lactobacillus plantarum T571 as an adjunct (probiotic case). The milk was also inoculated with a cocktail mixture of three strains of Listeria monocytogenes in two different initial levels of inoculum, and the fermentation process was followed. Accordingly, yogurt samples were stored at 4 and 12°C, and microbiological, physicochemical, molecular, and sensory analyses were performed during storage. Results showed that the lactic acid bacteria exceeded 7 log CFU/g during storage in all samples, where the probiotic samples displayed higher acidity, lower pH, and reduced counts of Lb. monocytogenes in a shorter period than the control ones at both temperatures. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis verified the presence of the probiotic strain until the end of storage at both temperatures and in adequate amounts, whereas the survival and the distribution of Listeria strains depended on the case. The sensory evaluation showed that the probiotic samples had desirable organoleptic characteristics, similar to the control. Finally, the spectral data collected from the yogurt samples during storage were correlated with microbiological counts and sensory data. Partial least squares and support vector machine regression and classification models were developed to provide quantitative estimations of yogurt microbiological counts and qualitative estimations of their sensory status, respectively, based on Fourier transform infrared fingerprints. The developed models exhibited satisfactory performance, and the acquired results were promising for the rapid estimation of the microbiological counts and sensory status of yogurt.

Abstract
The study reports protective role of potential probiotic cultures against infection by biofilm forming Cronobacter sakazakii in Caenorhabditis elegans model system. Among the fifteen indigenous potential probiotics, the cell free supernatant of Lactobacillus gastricus BTM7 possessed highest antimicrobial action and biofilm inhibition against C. sakazakii. The competitive exclusion assays revealed that preconditioning with probiotics resulted in increased mean life span of the nematode to 12-13 days as compared to 5-6 days when the pathogen was administered alone. Enhanced expression of the marker genes (pmk-1, daf-16 and skn-1) was observed during the administration of probiotic cultures. The highest expression of pmk-1 (2.5 folds) was observed with administration of L. gastricus BTM7. The principal component analysis on selected variables revealed that L. gastricus BTM7 has the potential to limit the infection of C. sakazakii in C. elegans and enhance the expression of key genes involved in extending life span of the worm.

Abstract
There are many critical challenges in the use of primary and secondary cultures and their biological compounds in food commodities. An alternative is the application of postbiotics from the starter and protective lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The concept of postbiotics is relatively new and there is still not a recognized definition for this term. The word "postbiotics" is currently used to refer to bioactive compounds, which did not fit to the traditional definitions of probiotics, prebiotics, and paraprobiotics. Therefore, the postbiotics may be presently defined as bioactive soluble factors (products or metabolic byproducts), produced by some food-grade microorganisms during the growth and fermentation in complex microbiological culture (in this case named cell-free supernatant), food, or gut, which exert some benefits to the food or the consumer. Many LAB are considered probiotic and their postbiotic compounds present similar or additional health benefits to the consumer; however, this review aimed to address the most recent applications of the postbiotics with food safety purposes. The potential applications of postbiotics in food biopreservation, food packaging, and biofilm control were reviewed. The current uses of postbiotics in the reduction and biodegradation of some food safety-related chemical contaminants (e.g., biogenic amines) were considered. We also discussed the safety aspects, the obstacles, and future perspectives of using postbiotics in the food industry. This work will open up new insights for food applications of postbiotics prepared from LAB.

Abstract
The use of biological immunostimulants is considered a valuable practice to improve culture conditions in aquaculture sector that may help to increase production and maintain healthy environment. We undertook this study in order to evaluate the potential effect of the administration of two exopolysaccharides (EPS) "EPLB" and "EPB" derived from potential probiotic strains on immune and antioxidant status of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) larvae. In order to find out if the EPSs have an effect on the biochemical composition during the trial period, the nutritional value has been evaluated. The results revealed that expression levels of immune-relevant genes (infg, Il1b, Il8, Il6 and tcr-β) in the gut and head kidney and the scavenging enzymes (cat, sod, gr) genes in the liver were modulated. In fact, the dietary supplementation with the tested EPSs, significantly enhances the expression of immune-associated genes in the head-kidney, particularly infg and tcrβ, as well as catalase gene in liver. During the period of study, EPSs administration did not affect the fatty acid profiles of larvae, which is balanced. This is confirmed by the Docosahexaenoic acid / Eicosapentaenoic acid ratio and demonstrates that EPLB and EPB can be administrated without any negative effect on biochemical composition of European sea bass. The present findings provided evidence that the tested EPSs with antibacterial and antioxidant activities can enhance immune response without negative effect on the biochemical composition. The used EPSs can be considered as a good source of natural functional aquafeed ingredients for European sea bass.

Abstract
Background Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi), the causative agent of typhoid fever, causes serious systemic disease in humans. Antibiotic treatment is required for the S. Typhi infection, while the inappropriate use of antibiotics causes increased drug-resistant S. Typhi. Hence, alternative therapies through non-antibiotic approaches are urgently needed. The use of beneficial lactic acid bacterium and/or its metabolites to control typhoid fever represent a promising approach, as it may exert protective actions through various mechanisms. Method In this study, the cell-free culture supernatant (CFCS) of Weissella confusa WM36 was evaluated via the antibacterial activity, and its metabolites were identified. In addition, the effects of CFCS on Salmonella virulence behaviors were also investigated. Result Based on strong inhibition the growth of S. Typhi DMST 22842, organic acids (lactic acid and acetic acid) and 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol (2,4 DTBP), were the main antibacterial metabolites presented in CFCS of strain WM36. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at 40% WM36–CFCS dramatically reduced the S. Typhi population to more than 99.99% at 4 h and completely inhibited biofilm formation, while sub-MIC at 20% (v/v) and MIC could reduce 100% of motility. Additionally, sub-MIC at only 10% (v/v) WM36–CFCS did down-regulate the expression of virulence genes which are responsible for the type-III secretion system, effector proteins, and quorum sensing system in this pathogen. Conclusion W. confusa WM36 and its metabolites are shown to be a promising candidates, and an effective approach against typhoid Salmonella burden.

Abstract
Background Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Typhimurium are the causative pathogens of salmonellosis, and they are mostly found in animal source foods (ASF). The inappropriate use of antibiotics enhances the possibility for the emergence of antibiotic resistance in pathogens and antibiotic residue in ASF. One promising alternative to antibiotics in animal farming is the use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Methods The present study was carried out the cells and/or the cell-free culture supernatants (CFCS) from beneficial LAB against S. Typhi and S. Typhimurium. The antibacterial mechanisms of LAB-CFCS as biocontrol agents against both Salmonella serovars were investigated through the analysis of anti-salmonella growth activity, biofilm inhibition and quorum quenching activity. Results Among 146 LAB strains isolated from 110 fermented food samples, the 2 strong inhibitory effect strains (WM33 and WM36) from fermented grapes against both Salmonella serovars were selected. Out of the selected strains, WM36 was the most effective inhibitor, which indicated S. Typhi by showing 95.68% biofilm inhibition at 20% biofilm inhibition concentration (BIC) and reduced 99.84% of AI-2 signaling interference. The WM33 was the best to control S. Typhimurium by producing 66.46% biofilm inhibition at only 15% BIC and 99.99% AI-2 signaling a reduction. The 16S rDNA was amplified by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The selected isolates were identified as Weissella viridescens WM33 and Weissella confusa WM36 based on nucleotide homology and phylogenetic analysis. Conclusion The metabolic extracts from Weissella spp. inhibit Salmonella serovars with the potential to be used as biocontrol agents to improve microbiological safety in the production of ASF.

Abstract
Biofilm-associated bacterial infections represent one of the major threats to modern medical treatments. Bacteria encased in biofilm matrix are more resistant towards antimicrobials and thus the capability of microbes to persist and nurture in a biofilm seems to be the foremost aspect of pathogenesis and therapeutic failure. Therefore, there is a pressing demand for new drugs active against microbial biofilms. In the current study, anti-biofilm potential of Lactobacillus spp. cell-free supernatants (CFSs) against Cronobacter sakazakii and Listeria monocytogenes was characterized using crystal violet staining and MTT assay. CFSs of goat milk origin lactobacilli not only prevented biofilm formation but also disrupted preformed biofilms. Neutralized and heat-treated preparations of Lactobacillus CFSs also inhibited biofilm formation by test pathogens. The results were quantitatively confirmed by light and fluorescent microscopy observations. Biofilms developed under static conditions displayed typical compact microcolonies with uniform distribution over the surface, while upon CFS challenge, biofilms were disrupted with presence of dead cells. These findings highlight the anti-biofilm potency of Lactobacillus spp. strains of goat milk origin and their potential application in food industries.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria Gram-negative and Gram-positive, including lactic acid bacteria (LAB), organisms that are traditionally used in food preservation practices. Bacteriocins have been shown to have an aptitude as biofilm controlling agents in Listeria monocytogenes biofilms, a major risk for consumers and the food industry. Biofilms protect pathogens from sanitization procedures, allowing them to survive and persist in processing facilities, resulting in the cross-contamination of the end products. Studies have been undertaken on bacteriocinogenic LAB, their bacteriocins, and bioengineered bacteriocin derivatives for controlling L. monocytogenes biofilms on different surfaces through inhibition, competition, exclusion, and displacement. These alternative strategies can be considered promising in preventing the development of resistance to conventional sanitizers and disinfectants. Bacteriocins are "friendly" antimicrobial agents, and with high prevalence in nature, they do not have any known associated public health risk. Most trials have been carried out in vitro, on food contact materials such as polystyrene and stainless steel, while there have been few studies performed in situ to consolidate the results observed in vitro. There are strategies that can be employed for prevention and eradication of L. monocytogenes biofilms (such as the establishment of standard cleaning procedures using the available agents at proper concentrations). However, commercial cocktails using alternatives compounds recognized as safe and environmental friendly can be an alternative approach to be applied by the industries in the future.

Abstract
Probiotics have a role in maintaining oral health through interaction with oral microbiome, thus contributing to healthy microbial equilibrium. The nature and composition of any individual microbiome impacts the general health, being a major contributor to oral health. The emergence of drug resistance and the side effects of available antimicrobials have restricted their use in an array of prophylactic options. Indeed, some new strategies to prevent oral diseases are based on manipulating oral microbiota, which is provided by probiotics. Currently, no sufficient substantial evidence exists to support the use of probiotics to prevent, treat or manage oral cavity diseases. At present, probiotic use did not cause adverse effects or increased risks of caries or periodontal diseases. This implicates no strong evidence against treatment using probiotics. In this review, we try to explore the use of probiotics in prevention, treatment and management of some oral cavity diseases and the possibilities of developing designer probiotics for the next generation of oral and throat complimentary healthcare.

There is an increasing trend in the food industry on the Listeria monocytogenes biofilm formation and inhibition. This is attributed to its easy survival on contact surfaces, resistance to disinfectants or antibiotics and growth under the stringent condition used for food processing and preservation thereby leading to food contamination products by direct or indirect exposure. Though, there is a lack of conclusive evidences about the mechanism of biofilm formation, in this review, the concept of biofilm formation and various chemical, physical, and green technology approaches to prevent or control the biofilm formed is discussed. State-of-the-art approaches ranging from the application of natural to synthetic molecules with high effectiveness and non-toxicity targeted at the different steps of biofilm formation could positively influence the biofilm inhibition in the future.

Abstract
Objectives This study aims to investigate the antimicrobial and the anti-biofilm activities of Lactobacillus plantarum extract (LPE) against a panel of oral Staphylococcus aureus (n = 9) and S. aureus ATCC 25923. The in vitro ability of LPE to modulate bacterial resistance to tetracycline, benzalchonium chloride, and chlorhexidine were tested also. Methods The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and the minimal bactericidal concentrations of Lactobacillus plantarum extract, tetracycline, benzalchonium chloride and clohrhexidine were determined in absence and in presence of a sub-MIC doses of LPE (1/2 MIC). In addition, the LPE potential to inhibit biofilm formation was assessed by microtiter plate and atomic force microscopy assays. Statistical analysis was performed on SPSS v. 17.0 software using Friedman test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test. These tests were used to assess inter-group difference (p < 0.05). Results Our results revealed that LPE exhibited a significant antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activities against the tested strains. A synergistic effect of LPEs and drug susceptibility was observed with a 2–8-fold reduction. Conclusion LPE may be considered to have resistance-modifying activity. A more detailed investigation is necessary to determine the active compound responsible for therapeutic and disinfectant modulation.

Abstract
Both the whole cells and protoplasts of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and Bacillus cereus, two biofilm-forming bacteria, were disrupted by the lipopeptide 6-2 produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens anti-CA. The lipopeptide 6-2 could also effectively inhibit the formation of biofilms and disperse pre-formed biofilms. Live/dead staining of the biofilms grown in the absence or presence of the lipopeptide 6-2 showed that more dead bacterial cells in the presence of the lipopeptide than those in the absence of the lipopeptide and biofilm formation was greatly reduced by the lipopeptide 6-2. Expression of the PslC gene related to exopolysaccharides in P. aeruginosa PAO1 was also inhibited. All these results demonstrated that the lipopeptide 6-2 produced by B. amyloliquefaciens anti-CA had a high activity against biofilm-forming bacteria. The lipopeptide 6-2 also killed the larvae of Balanus amphitrite and inhibit the germination of Laminaria japonica spore and growth of protozoa, all of which were the fouling organisms in marine environments.

Abstract
In this study, three lactic acid bacteria (LAB), isolated from barley, traditional dried meat and fermented olive were characterized and tested for their anti-bacterial and anti-biofilm activities against oral bacteria. Our results revealed that the tested LAB were γ-hemolytic and were susceptible to four antibiotics. All the strains were resistant to low pH, bile salt, pepsin and pancreatin. Furthermore, FB2 displayed a high aut-oaggregative phenotype (99.54%) while FF2 exhibited the best co-aggregation rate. Concerning the microbial adhesion to solvent, FB2 was the most hydrophobic strain (data obtained with chloroform and n-hexadecane). In addition Pediococcus pentosaceus FB2 and Lactobacillus brevis FF2 displayed a significant inhibitory effect against Streptococcus salivarius B468 (MIC = 10%). Moreover the selected strains were able to inhibit biofilm formation of Bacillus cereus ATCC14579 (MBIC50 = 28.16%) and S. salivarius B468 (MBIC50 = 42.28%). The selected LAB could be considered as candidate probiotics for further application in functional food and mainly in the prevention of oral diseases.

Abstract
Novel lactic acid bacteria isolated from different organs of freshwater fish were examined for their potential application as probiotics in raw and processed foods. Four isolates of Enterococcus faecium and Leuconostoc mesenteroides were identified at the molecular level by 16S rRNA sequencing and random amplification of polymorphic DNA - polymerase chain reaction, and their antimicrobial activity against a panel of pathogens and food-poisoning bacteria was investigated. The whole bacteriocins of the 4 isolates were characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequences in PCR. The isolates exhibited high inhibitory activities against food-borne pathogens and spoilage microbial species and have significant probiotic profiles, since they survived at pH 3.0 and in the presence of bile salts, pancreatin, and pepsin, without any detectable hemolytic activity. Further, moderate heat resistance, adhesion ability to steel surfaces, and sensitivity to clinically relevant antimicrobial agents were revealed for all the isolates. These results highlight the specific probiotic properties of the strains and give evidence for potential application in minimally processed foods subjected to moderate heat processing.
