Abstract
AIMS To describe the development process of a device from the conception of the idea to the first contact with the commercial environment, and to demonstrate its practical application through an interdisciplinary collaboration between nursing and engineering for the design of a protective device for peripheral venous catheters. BACKGROUND Nurses are key agents for identifying unresolved needs or problems related to nursing care. To address these needs, creative ideation processes are often triggered among nurses to seek technological answers to these challenges. RESULTS The ten steps to develop a device are presented: (1) detecting an unsatisfied clinical need; (2) searching for preexisting marketed products; (3) searching for patents; (4) maintaining confidentiality throughout the process; (5) obtaining institutional support; (6) forming a multidisciplinary team; (7) developing the idea; (8) applying for a patent; (9) building the prototype; (10) marketing the device. This methodology was applied to design a protective device for peripheral venous catheters in hospitalized patients. CONCLUSIONS Nurses can play a key role in the promotion of healthcare innovation in their field to improve procedures, thanks to their direct contact with patients, and by providing their insight on devices that can enhance patient care. The successful interdisciplinary collaboration between nurses and engineers can provide a response to relevant clinical problems such as the manipulation or removal of peripheral venous catheters. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND/OR HEALTH POLICY A hospital policy is required to encourage the participation of nurses in innovative actions. Furthermore, it is important to support nurse leaders who can play a pivotal role in incorporating creativity into work environments and empowering other nurses to innovatively address clinical issues. Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to explore the correlation between artificial intelligence (AI) literacy, AI anxiety and AI attitudes among paediatric nurses, as well as identify the influencing factors on paediatric nurses' AI attitudes. DESIGN A descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional research. METHODS This study was conducted between January and February 2024 with 170 nurses actively working in paediatric clinics in Turkey. The data collection tools included the Nurse Information Form, the General Attitudes Towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS), the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale (AILS) and the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale (AIAS). To determine the associations between the variables, the data was analysed using IBM SPSS 28, which included linear regression and Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS The study indicated significant positive correlations between paediatric nurses' age and their AIAS scores (r = .226; p < .01) and significant negative correlations between paediatric nurses' age and their AILS (r = -.192; p < .05) and GAAIS scores (r = -.152; p < .05). The GAAIS was significantly predictive (p < .000) and accounted for 50% of the variation in AIAS and AILS scores. CONCLUSION Paediatric nurses' attitudes towards AI significantly predicted AI literacy and AI anxiety. The relationship between the age of the paediatric nurses and the anxiety, AI literacy and attitudes towards AI was demonstrated. Healthcare and educational institutions should create customized training programs and awareness-raising activities for older nurses, as there are noticeable variations in the attitudes of paediatric nurses towards AI based on their age. IMPLICATIONS FOR PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE Providing in-service AI training can help healthcare organizations improve paediatric nurses' attitudes towards AI, increase their AI literacy and reduce their anxiety. This training has the potential to impact their attitudes positively and reduce their anxiety. REPORTING METHOD The study results were critically reported using STROBE criteria. Abstract
In the dynamic landscape of contemporary healthcare, the imperative for advancing the frontiers of knowledge and improving patient outcomes necessitates a paradigm shift towards a multidisciplinary approach. This background great enhances a nurse's ability to interface with technology and create technical solutions such as robots, patient care devices, or computer simulation for patient care needs and nursing care delivery. This study aims to describe, through a narrative review of evidence, a methodology to develop and manager Nursing-Engineering interdisciplinary project, clarify the key points and facilitate professionals who are not very familiar with this topic. The methodology employed highlights the importance of this kind of research that allows to achieve highest standards of practice leading to improved patient care, innovative solutions and a global contribution to healthcare excellence.

Abstract
OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSWe used a survey to evaluate the perceptions of nurses and nursing students on robotic technology for nursing care before and after reviewing an educational video that included examples of medical, care, and healthcare service robotic technology. We found that the perception of robotic technology was innately favorable and became more favorable after the video. It is beneficial for engineers to incorporate nurses' frontline knowledge into the design process from the beginning, while functional changes can be implemented since nurses comprise the largest group of healthcare professionals in hospitals and are the end users of technological devices. Educating nurses in state-of-the-art technology specific to what designers are developing can enable them to provide relevant insight. Designers and engineers can use this insight to create user-friendly, effective technology that improves not only patient care but also nurse job satisfaction.

Abstract
Undoubtedly, technology continues to permeate the world at an unprecedented pace. The discipline of nursing is not alien to this phenomenon as nurses continue to employ various technological objects and applications in clinical practice, education, administration and research. Despite the centrality of technology in nursing, it has not been recognised as a metaparadigm domain of interest in the discipline of nursing. Thus, this paper sought to examine if technology truly reflected a metaparadigm domain using the four requirements posited by Fawcett. Using these requirements, we examined the onto-epistemology of technology in relation to nursing and conclude that technology potentially represents a distinct domain that intersects with nursing (particularly, from the humanities perspective). Also, technology encompasses some phenomena of interest to the discipline of nursing, demonstrates perspective-neutrality, and is international in scope and substance albeit with some nuances which do not fit well with nursing onto-epistemology. Put together, it is highlighted that technology intersects with the existing metaparadigm domains (person, health, environment and nursing) which positions it as a potential phenomenon of interest to the discipline of nursing requiring further work to articulate its position and role.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Touch is an integral part of human interaction. Health care makes significant use of touch, and for most healthcare professionals, it is indispensable to their practice. An essential and inevitable facet of the nursing profession is the touching of patients during the provision of care. Unfortunately, touch is seldom considered in the nursing framework today. AIMS To emphasize the importance of touch in contemporary nursing practice in a highly technological environment. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search was conducted on February-May 2022. The initial search identified 84 articles and the final analysis included 38 articles that met the inclusion criteria (touch; touch in health care; touch and nursing; touch and technology; nursing and technology; nursing and caring; touch and caring). RESULTS The nurses' touch will always be an irreplaceable component of caring in nursing. DISCUSSION There can be no substitute to the expressive touch of a nurse. As the technological revolution in nursing is inevitable, it is imperative that nurses consider how much these technologies impact the nurse-patient relationships. CONCLUSION The study emphasized the importance of touch in contemporary nursing practice. The study found that the nurses' touch will always be an irreplaceable component of caring in nursing. The finding will have an impact on nurses and patients situated in highly technological healthcare environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will transform nursing across all domains of nursing practice, including administration, clinical care, education, policy, and research. PURPOSE This study examined the impact of an AI course in the nursing curriculum on students' medical AI readiness. DESIGN AND METHODS This comparative quasi-experimental study was conducted with a total of 300 3rd-year nursing students, 129 in the control group and 171 in the experimental group. Students in the experimental group received 28 hours of AI training. The students in the control group were not given any training. Data were collected by a socio-demographic form and the Medical Artificial Intelligence Readiness Scale. RESULTS An AI course should be included in the nursing curriculum, according to 67.8% of students in the experimental group and 57.4% of students in the control group. The mean score of the experimental group on medical AI readiness was higher ( P < .05) and the effect size of the course on readiness was -0.29. CONCLUSIONS An AI nursing course positively affects students' readiness for medical AI.

Abstract
Introduction Nurses frequently innovate in response to operational failures, regulations, procedures, and/or other workflow barriers that prevent them from delivering high-quality patient care. Unfortunately, most nurse innovations do not diffuse to a broader audience, depriving other nurses from taking advantage of solutions that have already been developed elsewhere. This under-diffusion is problematic from a societal and welfare point of view. The goal of this paper is to understand how diffusion shortage of nurse innovations can be reduced. Methods We develop a qualitative case study of a medical makerspace at the largest academic hospital in the Netherlands. This medical makerspace reported unusually high rates of nurse innovation diffusion. Our data collection includes on-site observations, archival data, secondary data, and fifteen in-depth interviews with key informants. Qualitative coding procedures and a combination of deductive and inductive reasoning are used to analyze the data. Results Our data show that personal, organizational, regulatory, and market barriers prevent nurses from further developing and diffusion their innovations in an anticipatory manner. That is, because nurses expect that transforming an initial solution into an innovation that can be shared with others will be too time consuming and difficult they do not proceed with the further development. The medical makerspace that we investigated adequately addresses this problem by developing an innovation ecosystem that largely takes over the innovation and diffusion process. Discussion We provide a concrete example of how a medical makerspace, and innovation support systems in a broader sense, can be designed to more adequately address the nurse innovation-diffusion gap. The two main elements of the practical solution that we identified are: (1) Support systems should facilitate that others may lead the development and diffusion of innovations and (2) The support system should promote that actors integrate their functional specializations within an innovation ecosystem. We make two theoretical contributions. First, we contribute to understanding barriers in the nurse innovation-diffusion process from a psychological point. Second, we identified that an ecosystem perspective is beneficial to develop innovation support systems in which diffusion occurs more often.

Abstract
Nursing science contributes to advancements in patient care, public health, and innovation within numerous scientific domains. Despite commonality with United States Department of Education definitions of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational programs, nursing continues to be excluded from Department of Homeland Security STEM classification. This exclusion prevents societal recognition of nursing as a science and limits attraction of clinicians and nurse scientists born outside of the United States due to omission from various federal visa provisions the Department of Homeland Security classification provides. We evaluated existing Department of Homeland Security STEM-classified educational programs and identified methodological and content congruency among STEM-classified programs and nursing. We provide clear evidence that nursing contributes impactful STEM research; and argue that inclusion is critical for advancement of the profession and the potential to mitigate the faculty shortage. Beyond evaluation of nursing as a STEM field, we offer a policy-focused solution for development and diversification of the nursing workforce.

Abstract
AIM To examine the need for information and communication technology (ICT)-based nursing care in improving patient management during the pandemic. BACKGROUND Maintaining traditional approaches to nursing in the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic predisposes health care systems to a risk of diminished quality of care. Using ICT (real-time videoconferencing, mobile robots and artificial intelligence) could reduce burnout and infection risks by minimizing face-to-face contact. METHOD Qualitative descriptive design with content analysis. RESULTS Overall, 24 participants (14 nurses, six medical/nursing informatics experts and four technology experts) were interviewed. Three main themes were extracted: emerging challenges for nurses due to COVID-19, impact of new technology on patient and nurse experiences and concerns with implementation of technology. CONCLUSION A significant portion of nurses' work was unrelated to professional nursing, causing burnout. ICT could help reduce nurses' burden by facilitating environmental management and non-contact communication and providing emotional support for patients. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Establishing an ICT-based nursing care system that considers the physical environment and communication infrastructure of health care institutions, user's digital health literacy and user safety to effectively manage non-nursing care-related activities and undertake tasks that can be delegated may improve the quality of care for quarantined patients and reduce risk of cross-infection.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aims to develop a measurement tool that will determine the innovative leadership levels of nurses. METHODS This methodological paper was conducted with 615 nurses. The content validity, factor analyses, and Cronbach's alpha test were used for psychometric assessment. FINDINGS As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, the scale consists of 43 items and five subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the innovative leadership scale (ILS) is a valid model. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS There is a need for innovative leading nurses in the healthcare field. The psychometric assessment showed the ILS is a valid and reliable scale.

Abstract
Remote health monitoring (RHM) technologies (eg, wearables, smart phones, embedded sensors, and telehealth platforms) offer significant opportunities to improve health and wellness for older adults facing serious illness. This article highlights key challenges and opportunities for designing and deploying RHM systems in the context of caring for older adults with cancer, with an emphasis on the key role nurses can play in this work. Focal topics include user-centered design, interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing health inequities and disparities, privacy and data security, participant recruitment and burden, personalized and tailored care, rapid technological change, family caregiver perspectives, and naturalistic data collection. It is critical for nurses to be aware of both challenges and opportunities within each of these areas in order to develop RHM systems that are optimally beneficial for patients, family caregivers, clinicians, and organizations. By leveraging their unique knowledge of the illness experience from the patient, family, and health care provider perspective, nurses can make essential clinical and scientific contributions to advance the field of RHM.

Abstract
AIM Due to the COVID pandemic and technological innovation, robots gain increasing role in nursing services. While studies investigated negative attitudes of nurses towards robots, we lack an understanding of nurses' preferences about robot characteristics. Our aim was to explore how key robot features compare when weighed together. METHODS Cross-sectional research design based on a conjoint analysis approach. Robot dimensions tested were: (1) communication; (2) look; (3) safety; (4) self-learning ability; and (5) interactive behaviour. Participants were asked to rank robot profile cards from most to least preferred. RESULTS In order of importance, robot's ability to learn ranked first followed by behaviour, look, operating safety and communication. Most preferred robot combination was 'robot responds to commands only, looks like a machine, never misses target, runs programme only and behaves friendly'. CONCLUSIONS Robot self-learning capacity was least favoured by nurses showing potential fear of robots taking over core nurse competencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Descriptions of convergence research include promises to solve complex societal problems, such as environmental determinants of health and social determinants of health, through the integration of diverse disciplines, such as nursing and engineering, to create novel frameworks, such as the V-shaped professional. PURPOSE The purpose of this paper was to define the nurse+engineer as a prototypical V-shaped professional. METHODS Starting from a description of the I-shaped discipline of nursing and the I-shaped discipline of engineering, we follow an intentional pathway to define the concept of the nurse+engineer as a new V-shaped professional. FINDINGS Examples of the nurse+engineer at the bedside and the nurse+engineer in the community are highlighted to support a theoretical definition of the V-shaped nurse+engineer. DISCUSSION Implications of the nurse+engineer in the workforce and practical recommendations for training nurse+engineer professionals are provided to improve healthcare policy, practice, research, and education through scientific discovery and innovation.

Abstract
The digitalization of healthcare work has gained center stage in academic debates spanning disciplines as diverse as medicine, sociology and STS. The different analytical interests and methodological traditions of these three strains of scholarship have, however, resulted in quite diverging approaches to this issue. Points of interest have ranged from the (disattended) promise of increased efficiency of healthcare work, to dynamics of task delegation, (re-)professionalization and (re-)distribution of invisible work, to the disruption of informal organization. Instead of studying these dynamics in practice, in this paper we foreground the potentiality for theory-making inherent in the systematic cross-contamination of different theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. We perform a Critical Interpretive Synthesis (CIS) centering the ways the digitalization of healthcare work has been investigated in recent STS, sociological and medical literature. To open up assumptions and insights intrinsic to each body of literature for scholars and practitioners in other fields, we propose here a metaphor-based variation on CIS approaches. We probe, in turn, what slime molds can teach us about STS's focus on interconnections and materiality, how we can better understand sociological analyses of invisible work exploring them through theatrical performances, and which lessons river engineering offers concerning medical scholarship's discussion of efficiency and proper healthcare work. Thinking through these metaphors, we conceptualize the digitalization of healthcare work as a phenomenon spanning, at once, the directionality of technological innovation trajectories and the open-endedness of situated changes in work practices. Based on our analysis, we propose focusing on technological scripts, and various forms of invisible work and informal organization as entry points into the study of the tension between directionality and open-endedness in the context of the digitalization of healthcare work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Capnography is commonly used for nurse-administered procedural sedation. Distinguishing between capnography waveform abnormalities that signal the need for clinical intervention for an event and those that do not indicate the need for intervention is essential for the successful implementation of this technology into practice. It is possible that capnography alarm management may be improved by using machine learning to create a "smart alarm" that can alert clinicians to apneic events that are predicted to be prolonged. OBJECTIVE To determine the accuracy of machine learning models for predicting at the 15-second time point if apnea will be prolonged (ie, apnea that persists for >30 seconds). METHODS A secondary analysis of an observational study was conducted. We selected several candidate models to evaluate, including a random forest model, generalized linear model (logistic regression), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression, ridge regression, and the XGBoost model. Out-of-sample accuracy of the models was calculated using 10-fold cross-validation. The net benefit decision analytic measure was used to assist with deciding whether using the models in practice would lead to better outcomes on average than using the current default capnography alarm management strategies. The default strategies are the aggressive approach, in which an alarm is triggered after brief periods of apnea (typically 15 seconds) and the conservative approach, in which an alarm is triggered for only prolonged periods of apnea (typically >30 seconds). RESULTS A total of 384 apneic events longer than 15 seconds were observed in 61 of the 102 patients (59.8%) who participated in the observational study. Nearly half of the apneic events (180/384, 46.9%) were prolonged. The random forest model performed the best in terms of discrimination (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.66) and calibration. The net benefit associated with the random forest model exceeded that associated with the aggressive strategy but was lower than that associated with the conservative strategy. CONCLUSIONS Decision curve analysis indicated that using a random forest model would lead to a better outcome for capnography alarm management than using an aggressive strategy in which alarms are triggered after 15 seconds of apnea. The model would not be superior to the conservative strategy in which alarms are only triggered after 30 seconds.

Abstract
Intravenous therapy administration through peripheral venous catheters is one of the most common nursing procedures performed in clinical contexts. However, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) remain insufficiently used by nurses and can be considered a potential alternative for patients who need aggressive intravenous therapy and/or therapy for extended periods. The purpose of this study was to understand nurses' perspectives about PICC implementation in their clinical practice. As part of an action-research project, three focus groups were developed in June 2019 with nineteen nurses of a cardiology ward from a Portuguese tertiary hospital. From the content analysis, two main categories emerged: 'nursing practices' and 'patients'. Nurses considered PICC beneficial for their clinical practice because it facilitates maintenance care and catheter replacement rates. Moreover, nurses suggested that, since there is a need for specific skills, the constitution of vascular access teams, as recommended by international guidelines, could be an advantage. Regarding patient benefits, nurses highlighted a decrease in the number of venipunctures and also of patient discomfort, which was associated with the number of peripheral venous catheters. Infection prevention was also indicated. As an emerging medical device used among clinicians, peripherally inserted central catheters seem to be essential to clinical practice.

Abstract
Given the complexity and rapidly changing pace of 21st-century healthcare, the need for research intensive Ph.D. prepared nurses has never been greater. Philanthropic funders and sponsors of Ph.D. nursing education have important insights into how investments in Ph.D. education have direct and positive impacts on healthcare, and consequently bring important perspectives to emerging roles for Ph.D. prepared nurses. To elicit these perspectives focused questions were posed to four leading philanthropic funders/sponsors of Ph.D. nursing education: The Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation; The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Sigma Theta Tau- International Honor Society of Nursing, and the Jonas Nursing & Veterans Healthcare of Jonas Philanthropies. The interviews were conducted as part of a special session from the October 2019 PhD Summit "Re-Envisioning PhD Programs of the Future". A common theme that emerged from these discussions was the compelling need to prepare research intensive Ph.D. prepared nurses with advanced skills in leadership and innovation in order to leverage the larger impact of their work on health, health care and health policy. Lessons learned from the programs supported by these sponsors can be used to refine and implement future Ph.D. programs that provide the leadership and innovation skills required of research intensive Ph.D. prepared nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the rapid advancements in precision medicine and artificial intelligence, interdisciplinary collaborations between nursing and engineering have emerged. Although engineering is vital in solving complex nursing problems and advancing healthcare, the collaboration between the two fields has not been fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES To identify the study areas of interdisciplinary collaboration between nursing and engineering in health care, particularly focusing on the role of nurses in the collaboration. METHODS In this study, a scoping review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews was performed. A comprehensive search for published literature was conducted using the PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Digital Library, and Association for Computing Machinery Digital Library from inception to November 22, 2020. Data screening and extraction were performed independently by two reviewers. Any discrepancies in results were resolved through discussions or in consultation with a third reviewer. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results were visualized in an interdisciplinary collaboration model. RESULTS We identified 6,752 studies through the literature search, and 60 studies met the inclusion criteria. The study areas of interdisciplinary collaboration concentrated on patient safety (n = 18), symptom monitoring and health management (n = 18), information system and nursing human resource management (n = 16), health education (n = 5), and nurse-patient communication (n = 3). The roles of nurses in the interdisciplinary collaboration were divided into four themes: requirement analyst (n = 21), designer (n = 22), tester(n = 37) and evaluator (n = 49). Based on these results, an interdisciplinary collaboration model was constructed. CONCLUSIONS Interdisciplinary collaborations between nursing and engineering promote nursing innovation and practice. However, these collaborations are still emerging and in the early stages. In the future, nurses should be more involved in the early stages of solving healthcare problems, particularly in the requirement analysis and designing phases. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to develop interprofessional education, strengthen nursing connections with the healthcare engineering industry, and provide more platforms and resources to bring nursing and engineering disciplines together.

Abstract
Background International cooperation for infection control is important to prevent global pandemics. University students were difficult groups to manage of infection control measures. They often had overconfidence to their health, ineffective personal hygiene, and active social activities. Their misperceptions and inappropriate preventive behaviors increase the infection risks to university and community. Understanding university students’ perceptions of airborne infection management will contribute to the establishment of relevant policies and health education programs. Method This study explored subjective perceptions of airborne infection among university students in South Korea using Q-methodology. Forty university students representing different majors ranked a set of 33 statements reflecting their perceptions of airborne infection. They sorted the statements into a distribution on seven scales ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” Collected data were analyzed by the PC-QUANL program. The subjective perception types were extracted by using the principal component analysis. Results Four type are derived regardingperception of airborne infection: Type I (Government responsibility), Type II (Personal responsibility in self-management), Type III (Strict external management) and Type IV (Comprehensive countermeasures management). Thesefour types accounted for 45.6% of the total variance, and the individual contributions of Types I, II, III, and IV were 27.7, 7.6, 6.2, and 4.1%, respectively. Conclusion The major contribution of this study is to clarify university students’ perceptions of airborne infection. These findings can be used in formulating effective strategies for health education, media reporting, and public health policy to improve airborne infection management. Abstract
Caring expression in nursing is rapidly changing to include the use of sophisticated healthcare technologies. Unfortunately, few nurses participate in developing healthcare technologies. The current study aimed to generate a theory of nursing grounded in the phenomenon of nursing technologies creativity in nursing practice. The study design used a constructivist grounded theory. Sixteen Indonesian nurses selected by purposive sampling were interviewed in-depth. Data analysis used constant comparative analysis through Charmaz's coding process. This study generated two core conceptual categories that included technological creativity and drivers for technological development. Five theoretical statements were developed leading to the Technological Creativity as Caring in Nursing Theory. This theory is a middle-range theory that focuses on technological creativity to express caring for patients, nurses, and management in nursing practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will transform nursing across all domains of nursing practice, including administration, clinical care, education, policy, and research. Increasingly, researchers are exploring the potential influences of AI health technologies (AIHTs) on nursing in general and on nursing education more specifically. However, little emphasis has been placed on synthesizing this body of literature. OBJECTIVE A scoping review was conducted to summarize the current and predicted influences of AIHTs on nursing education over the next 10 years and beyond. METHODS This scoping review followed a previously published protocol from April 2020. Using an established scoping review methodology, the databases of MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central, Education Resources Information Centre, Scopus, Web of Science, and Proquest were searched. In addition to the use of these electronic databases, a targeted website search was performed to access relevant grey literature. Abstracts and full-text studies were independently screened by two reviewers using prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Included literature focused on nursing education and digital health technologies that incorporate AI. Data were charted using a structured form and narratively summarized into categories. RESULTS A total of 27 articles were identified (20 expository papers, six studies with quantitative or prototyping methods, and one qualitative study). The population included nurses, nurse educators, and nursing students at the entry-to-practice, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. A variety of AIHTs were discussed, including virtual avatar apps, smart homes, predictive analytics, virtual or augmented reality, and robots. The two key categories derived from the literature were (1) influences of AI on nursing education in academic institutions and (2) influences of AI on nursing education in clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS Curricular reform is urgently needed within nursing education programs in academic institutions and clinical practice settings to prepare nurses and nursing students to practice safely and efficiently in the age of AI. Additionally, nurse educators need to adopt new and evolving pedagogies that incorporate AI to better support students at all levels of education. Finally, nursing students and practicing nurses must be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to effectively assess AIHTs and safely integrate those deemed appropriate to support person-centered compassionate nursing care in practice settings. Abstract
BACKGROUND Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to transform the health system, yet little research to date has explored its influence on nurses-the largest group of health professionals. Furthermore, there has been little discussion on how AI will influence the experience of person-centered compassionate care for patients, families, and caregivers. OBJECTIVE This review aims to summarize the extant literature on the emerging trends in health technologies powered by AI and their implications on the following domains of nursing: administration, clinical practice, policy, and research. This review summarizes the findings from 3 research questions, examining how these emerging trends might influence the roles and functions of nurses and compassionate nursing care over the next 10 years and beyond. METHODS Using an established scoping review methodology, MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central, Education Resources Information Center, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases were searched. In addition to the electronic database searches, a targeted website search was performed to access relevant gray literature. Abstracts and full-text studies were independently screened by 2 reviewers using prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Included articles focused on nursing and digital health technologies that incorporate AI. Data were charted using structured forms and narratively summarized. RESULTS A total of 131 articles were retrieved from the scoping review for the 3 research questions that were the focus of this manuscript (118 from database sources and 13 from targeted websites). Emerging AI technologies discussed in the review included predictive analytics, smart homes, virtual health care assistants, and robots. The results indicated that AI has already begun to influence nursing roles, workflows, and the nurse-patient relationship. In general, robots are not viewed as replacements for nurses. There is a consensus that health technologies powered by AI may have the potential to enhance nursing practice. Consequently, nurses must proactively define how person-centered compassionate care will be preserved in the age of AI. CONCLUSIONS Nurses have a shared responsibility to influence decisions related to the integration of AI into the health system and to ensure that this change is introduced in a way that is ethical and aligns with core nursing values such as compassionate care. Furthermore, nurses must advocate for patient and nursing involvement in all aspects of the design, implementation, and evaluation of these technologies. Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing students are required to be adequately prepared to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in clinical practice. Yet, studies conducted worldwide indicate personal, organizational, and social barriers reported by students and a discrepancy between clinical resources and students' needs. PURPOSE To explore nursing students' usage of ICT during clinical placement and the associations between students' ICT acceptance, human and organizational resources, and ICT usage. METHOD Data were collected from 303 second and third year Israeli nursing students, through a self-administered structured questionnaire. RESULTS The use of Medical Health Records during clinical placements was rated highest (M = 4.62, SD = 0.74, range 1-5), whereas the use of e-Books was rated lowest (M = 2.26, SD = 1.37, range 1-5). Positive correlations were found between ICT use and human resources, social influence, organizational resources, and performance expectancy. Significant differences were found according to study years and proficiency in computer skills between students. Perceived human resources, cultural group, Hebrew proficiency, and social influence explained 28% of students' variance in ICT usage. CONCLUSIONS Nurse administrators and educators should promote the preparation of clinical settings in accordance with students' needs and proficiencies. Moreover, the development of curricula and clinical practicums must also take into account the role of organizational, social, and computer proficiency in students' ICT adoption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recognition for medical inventions and innovations is largely associated with physician-researchers, scientists, and engineers. The term "nurse" is largely absent from patents awarded in the United States. Yet, as front-line healthcare providers, who better to add to the current population of inventors and innovators of new, meaningful scientific and engineering medical discoveries than specialized advanced practice nurses and their registered nurse colleagues? Although medical inventions and innovations are not entirely new activities for nurses, the authors speculate that greater opportunities exist for these healthcare professionals to lead in and be officially recognized for medical care discoveries and advancements by having their names on patents awarded. Also, we surmise that without the active and dedicated participation of nurses, important and significant discoveries may be missed. AIMS The purpose of this paper is to address the importance of having nurses at all levels and specialties engaged in healthcare inventions and innovations. The foundation for this thesis begins by describing the findings from the first quantitative analysis of nurses' participation and/or recognition for the invention and innovation of medical devices and instruments, defined by having their names on awarded United States patents. In addition, we identify meaningful pathways for nurses to engage in this space. METHODS Data to evaluate nurse participation and recognition for medical device and instrument inventions and innovations were collected through a publicly accessible website, the United States Patent and Trademark Office database, and analyzed with respect to whether the patent author(s) were nurses or nonnurses. RESULTS More than 65 000 patents were identified with the terms "medical device" and "medical instrument." From the 65 000+ patent-population, 100 random patents were analyzed for the purposes of this first study and none were determined to have a nurse listed as a participating inventor or innovator. As a result of this analysis, the authors: (a) identify that nurses are largely unrecognized in the medical device invention and innovation space and (b) create models that explain nurses' engagement in this space from (i) historical and contemporary perspectives and (ii) for enhanced future involvement in healthcare patent activities. The future model is especially important as it provides a pathway for nurses to enhance their inventive and innovative competencies, effectiveness, and efficiency through new professional roles, additional education, creation of new educational programs, and formation of professional collaborations. It also calls for organizations that employ nurses to overtly allocate time, resources, and support for invention and innovation activities. We posit that fostering and facilitating nurses to enter the medical invention and innovation space stimulates discoveries that can improve patient care experiences, operations, and outcomes, reduce healthcare costs and provide myriad benefits to these professionals and the organizations that employ them. Examples of benefits from nursing inventions and innovations include prestige, scholarship, and the financial assets associated with intellectual property (ie, patents awarded) for both the nurse and the employing institution. Furthermore, direct involvement and engagement in inventions and innovations define a new practice space and contribution for nurses.

Abstract
To synthesize and critique studies that examined the impact of exergames on depressive symptoms in older adults. Articles were retrieved from the databases CINAHL, Embase, PsychINFO, and Medline. Studies were included in the review if they involved a physical activity/videogame intervention and measured outcomes of depressive symptoms in older adults. The search generated 957 articles for consideration, which were narrowed to 17 articles after applying exclusion criteria. In studies that required depressive symptoms as an inclusion criterion, there was an improvement in depressive symptoms in older adults following the exergame intervention. In studies that did not require depressive symptoms as an inclusion criterion, researchers found mixed results. Future older adult exergame research should measure depression as a primary outcome, utilize control groups with random sampling, consist of larger sample sizes, and include people with disabilities.
