Abstract
Anaemia in pregnancy is a global problem of significance in all settings. The most common cause is iron deficiency. Large numbers of women are affected, ranging up to 25-30% antenatally and 20-40% postnatally. It is associated with serious adverse outcomes for both the mother and her baby. The risk of low birth weight, preterm birth, postpartum haemorrhage, stillbirth, and neonatal death are all increased in the presence of anaemia. For the infants of affected pregnancies, complications may include neurocognitive impairment. Making an accurate diagnosis during pregnancy has its challenges, which include the choice of thresholds of haemoglobin below which a diagnosis of anaemia in each trimester of pregnancy can be made and, aligned with this question, which are the most appropriate biomarkers to use to define iron deficiency. Treatment with oral iron supplements increases the haemoglobin concentration and corrects iron deficiency. But high numbers of women fail to respond, probably due to poor adherence to medication, resulting from side effects. This has resulted in an increased use of more expensive intravenous iron. Doubts remain about the optimal regimen to of oral iron for use (daily, alternate days, or some other frequency) and the cost-effectiveness of intravenous iron. There is interest in strategies for prevention but these have yet to be proven clinically safe and effective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron and folic acid supplementation have been recommended in pregnancy for anaemia prevention, and may improve other maternal, pregnancy, and infant outcomes. OBJECTIVES To examine the effects of daily oral iron supplementation during pregnancy, either alone or in combination with folic acid or with other vitamins and minerals, as an intervention in antenatal care. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Trials Registry on 18 January 2024 (including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO's International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, conference proceedings), and searched reference lists of retrieved studies. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised or quasi-randomised trials that evaluated the effects of oral supplementation with daily iron, iron + folic acid, or iron + other vitamins and minerals during pregnancy were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Review authors independently assessed trial eligibility, ascertained trustworthiness based on pre-defined criteria, assessed risk of bias, extracted data, and conducted checks for accuracy. We used the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of the evidence for primary outcomes. We anticipated high heterogeneity amongst trials; we pooled trial results using a random-effects model (average treatment effect). MAIN RESULTS We included 57 trials involving 48,971 women. A total of 40 trials compared the effects of daily oral supplements with iron to placebo or no iron; eight trials evaluated the effects of iron + folic acid compared to placebo or no iron + folic acid. Iron supplementation compared to placebo or no iron Maternal outcomes: Iron supplementation during pregnancy may reduce maternal anaemia (4.0% versus 7.4%; risk ratio (RR) 0.30, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.20 to 0.47; 14 trials, 13,543 women; low-certainty evidence) and iron deficiency at term (44.0% versus 66.0%; RR 0.51, 95% CI 0.38 to 0.68; 8 trials, 2873 women; low-certainty evidence), and probably reduces maternal iron-deficiency anaemia at term (5.0% versus 18.4%; RR 0.41, 95% CI 0.26 to 0.63; 7 trials, 2704 women; moderate-certainty evidence), compared to placebo or no iron supplementation. There is probably little to no difference in maternal death (2 versus 4 events, RR 0.57, 95% CI 0.12 to 2.69; 3 trials, 14,060 women; moderate-certainty evidence). The evidence is very uncertain for adverse effects (21.6% versus 18.0%; RR 1.29, 95% CI 0.83 to 2.02; 12 trials, 2423 women; very low-certainty evidence) and severe anaemia (Hb < 70 g/L) in the second/third trimester (< 1% versus 3.6%; RR 0.22, 95% CI 0.01 to 3.20; 8 trials, 1398 women; very low-certainty evidence). No trials reported clinical malaria or infection during pregnancy. Infant outcomes: Women taking iron supplements are probably less likely to have infants with low birthweight (5.2% versus 6.1%; RR 0.84, 95% CI 0.72 to 0.99; 12 trials, 18,290 infants; moderate-certainty evidence), compared to placebo or no iron supplementation. However, the evidence is very uncertain for infant birthweight (MD 24.9 g, 95% CI -125.81 to 175.60; 16 trials, 18,554 infants; very low-certainty evidence). There is probably little to no difference in preterm birth (7.6% versus 8.2%; RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.84 to 1.02; 11 trials, 18,827 infants; moderate-certainty evidence) and there may be little to no difference in neonatal death (1.4% versus 1.5%, RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.77 to 1.24; 4 trials, 17,243 infants; low-certainty evidence) or congenital anomalies, including neural tube defects (41 versus 48 events; RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.58 to 1.33; 4 trials, 14,377 infants; low-certainty evidence). Iron + folic supplementation compared to placebo or no iron + folic acid Maternal outcomes: Daily oral supplementation with iron + folic acid probably reduces maternal anaemia at term (12.1% versus 25.5%; RR 0.44, 95% CI 0.30 to 0.64; 4 trials, 1962 women; moderate-certainty evidence), and may reduce maternal iron deficiency at term (3.6% versus 15%; RR 0.24, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.99; 1 trial, 131 women; low-certainty evidence), compared to placebo or no iron + folic acid. The evidence is very uncertain about the effects of iron + folic acid on maternal iron-deficiency anaemia (10.8% versus 25%; RR 0.43, 95% CI 0.17 to 1.09; 1 trial, 131 women; very low-certainty evidence), or maternal deaths (no events; 1 trial; very low-certainty evidence). The evidence is uncertain for adverse effects (21.0% versus 0.0%; RR 44.32, 95% CI 2.77 to 709.09; 1 trial, 456 women; low-certainty evidence), and the evidence is very uncertain for severe anaemia in the second or third trimester (< 1% versus 5.6%; RR 0.12, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.63; 4 trials, 506 women; very low-certainty evidence), compared to placebo or no iron + folic acid. Infant outcomes: There may be little to no difference in infant low birthweight (33.4% versus 40.2%; RR 1.07, 95% CI 0.31 to 3.74; 2 trials, 1311 infants; low-certainty evidence), comparing iron + folic acid supplementation to placebo or no iron + folic acid. Infants born to women who received iron + folic acid during pregnancy probably had higher birthweight (MD 57.73 g, 95% CI 7.66 to 107.79; 2 trials, 1365 infants; moderate-certainty evidence), compared to placebo or no iron + folic acid. There may be little to no difference in other infant outcomes, including preterm birth (19.4% versus 19.2%; RR 1.55, 95% CI 0.40 to 6.00; 3 trials, 1497 infants; low-certainty evidence), neonatal death (3.4% versus 4.2%; RR 0.81, 95% CI 0.51 to 1.30; 1 trial, 1793 infants; low-certainty evidence), or congenital anomalies (1.7% versus 2.4; RR 0.70, 95% CI 0.35 to 1.40; 1 trial, 1652 infants; low-certainty evidence), comparing iron + folic acid supplementation to placebo or no iron + folic acid. A total of 19 trials were conducted in malaria-endemic countries, or in settings with some malaria risk. No studies reported maternal clinical malaria; one study reported data on placental malaria. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Daily oral iron supplementation during pregnancy may reduce maternal anaemia and iron deficiency at term. For other maternal and infant outcomes, there was little to no difference between groups or the evidence was uncertain. Future research is needed to examine the effects of iron supplementation on other maternal and infant health outcomes, including infant iron status, growth, and development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia prevalence estimates reported in population surveys can vary based on the blood specimen source (capillary or venous) and analytic device (hematology autoanalyzers or portable hemoglobinometers) used for hemoglobin (Hb) determination. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare accuracy and precision of Hb measurement in three blood specimen types on three models of hemoglobinometers against the results from venous blood from the same individuals measured on automated analyzers (AAs). METHODS This multisite (Cambodia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Tanzania) study assessed Hb measurements in paired venous and capillary blood specimens from apparently healthy women (aged 15-49 y) and children (aged 12-59 mo) using three HemoCue® Hb models (201+, 301, and 801). Measurements were compared against reference values: venous blood in hematology AA and adjusted via regression calibration or mean difference in HemoCue® Hb. Venous, capillary pool, and single-drop capillary blood specimens were assessed for accuracy and precision. RESULTS Venous blood measured using HemoCue® Hb 301 exhibited a positive mean error, whereas responses in HemoCue® Hb 201+ and 801 were nondirectional compared with the reference. Adjustment with the reference harmonized mean errors for all devices across study sites to <1.0 g/L using venous blood. Precision was highest for venous blood (±5-16 g/L) in all sites, lowest for single-drop capillary (±9-37 g/L), and intermediate (±9-28 g/L) for capillary pool blood specimen. Imprecision differed across sites, especially with both capillary blood specimens, suggesting different levels of personnel skills. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that venous blood is needed for accurate and precise Hb determination. Single-drop capillary blood use should be discouraged owing to high measurement variability. Further research should evaluate the viability and reliability of capillary pool blood for this purpose. Accuracy of HemoCue® Hb devices can be improved via standardization against results from venous blood assessed using AA.

Abstract
Anaemia severely impacts physical and mental abilities, raises health risks, and diminishes the quality of life and work capacity. It is a leading cause of adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal mortality, especially in developing nations like India, where recent data on anaemia from National Family and Health Survey (NFHS-4) (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21) indicate a tremendous rise. Anaemia is a marker of poor nutrition and health, and socio-economic factors such as gender norms, race, income, and living conditions influence its impact. As a result, there are disparities in how anaemia affects different segments of society. However, existing research on health inequity and anaemia often employs a single-axis analytical framework of social power. These studies operate under the assumption that gender, economic class, ethnicity, and caste are inherently distinct and mutually exclusive categories and fail to provide a comprehensive understanding of anaemia prevalence. Therefore, the study has adopted the theoretical framework of intersectionality and analysed the NFHS-5 (2019-21) data using bivariate cross-tabulations and binary logistic regression models to understand how gender, class, caste, and place of residence are associated with the prevalence of anaemia. The results suggest that the women of Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) share a disproportionate burden of anaemia. This study confirms that economic class and gender, geographical location, level of education, and body mass index significantly determine the prevalence of anaemia. The ST and SC women who are economically marginalised and reside in rural areas with high levels of poverty, exclusion, and poor nutritional status have a higher prevalence of anaemia than other population groups. Thus, the study suggests that intersections of multiple factors such as caste, class, gender, and place of residence significantly determine 'who is anaemic in India'.

Abstract
Globally one-third of global population are victims of anemia, significantly impacting maternal and infant health and linked to poor cognition, productivity, and mortality risks. We used randomly selected 4040 lactating mothers' record from nationally representative survey. Descriptive statistics were weighted, and the standard hemoglobin cutoff point (below 12 g/dl) was used. Bivariable and multivariable multilevel binary logistic regression model considering the individual and community-level factors associated with anemia was employed. Crude and adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval were reported. In Ethiopia, 32.3% (95% CI 30.9-33.7%) of lactating women were anemic, with 23.4% having mild, 7.3% moderate, and 1.2% severe anemia. Pastoral regions (Afar, Somalia, and Oromia region) had higher burden of anemia than the others. The advanced age of the mother above 45 years (AOR = 1.43 (1.11-1.82), unemployment (AOR = 1.19; 95% CI 1.08-1.32), household wealth index (AOR = 0.56; 95% CI 0.50-0.63), extended family size (AOR = 1.20; 95% CI 1.04-1.46), and not using family planning (AOR = 1.70; 95% CI 1.49-1.93) were significant factors associated with anemia. Anemia is a moderate public health problem and associated with location and other factors to be addressed via effective interventions.

Abstract
Introduction With the acceleration of urbanization, public health issues have become increasingly prominent in smart city construction, especially in the face of sudden public health crises. A deep research method for public health management based on a 4M perspective (human, machine, materials, methods) is proposed to effectively address these challenges. Methods: The method involves studying the impact of human factors such as population age, gender, and occupation on public health from a human perspective. It incorporates a machine perspective by constructing a public health prediction model using deep neural networks. Additionally, it analyzes resource allocation and process optimization in public health management from the materials and methods perspectives. Results The experiments demonstrate that the public health prediction model based on deep neural networks achieved a prediction accuracy of 98.6% and a recall rate of 97.5% on the test dataset. In terms of resource allocation and process optimization, reasonable adjustments and optimizations increased the coverage of public health services by 20% and decreased the response time to public health events by 30%. Discussion This research method has significant benefits for addressing the challenges of public health in smart cities. It can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public health services, helping smart cities respond more quickly and accurately to potential large-scale public health events in the future. This approach holds important theoretical and practical significance.

Background: While some long-term effects of COVID-19 are respiratory in nature, a non-respiratory effect gaining attention has been a decline in hemoglobin, potentially mediated by inflammatory processes. In this study, we examined the correlations between hemoglobin levels and inflammatory biomarkers and evaluated the association between hemoglobin and fatigue in a cohort of Long-COVID patients. Methods: This prospective cohort study in the Netherlands evaluated 95 (mostly hospitalized) patients, aged 40-65 years, 3-6 months post SARS-CoV-2 infection, examining their venous hemoglobin concentration, anemia (hemoglobin < 7.5 mmol/L in women and <8.5 mmol/L in men), inflammatory blood biomarkers, average FSS (Fatigue Severity Score), demographics, and clinical features. Follow-up hemoglobin was compared against hemoglobin during acute infection. Spearman correlation was used for assessing the relationship between hemoglobin concentrations and inflammatory biomarkers, and the association between hemoglobin and fatigue was examined using logistic regression. Results: In total, 11 (16.4%) participants were suffering from anemia 3-6 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The mean hemoglobin value increased by 0.3 mmol/L 3-6 months after infection compared to the hemoglobin during the acute phase (p-value = 0.003). Whilst logistic regression showed that a 1 mmol/L greater increase in hemoglobin is related to a decrease in experiencing fatigue in Long-COVID patients (adjusted OR 0.38 [95%CI 0.13-1.09]), we observed no correlations between hemoglobin and any of the inflammatory biomarkers examined. Conclusion: Our results indicate that hemoglobin impairment might play a role in developing Long-COVID fatigue. Further investigation is necessary to identify the precise mechanism causing hemoglobin alteration in these patients.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices among anemia patients toward disease management. Methods This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted between September and December 2023 at The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine). A self-designed questionnaire was developed to collect demographic information of anemia patients, and assess their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) toward disease management. Results A total of 396 valid questionnaires were collected. The mean age of the participants was 57.44 ± 16.80 years, and 52.02% were female. The mean knowledge, attitudes, and practices scores were 11.47 ± 1.73 (possible range: 0-14), 27.32 ± 2.96 (possible range: 7-35), and 40.49 ± 6.06 (possible range: 10-50), respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that bachelor's degree or above was independently associated with sufficient knowledge (OR = 2.372, 95%CI: 1.160-4.853, p = 0.018). Knowledge (OR = 1.350, 95%CI: 1.166-1.563, p < 0.001) and hemoglobin within 60-90 g/L (OR = 1.782, 95%CI: 1.090-2.912, p = 0.021) were independently associated with positive attitudes. Moreover, attitudes (OR = 1.618, 95%CI: 1.454-1.799, p < 0.001) and diagnosis ≥1 year (OR = 1.949, 95%CI: 1.171-3.243, p = 0.010) were independently associated with proactive practices. The path analysis demonstrated that knowledge was directly and positively correlated with attitudes (β = 0.484, 95% CI: 0.363-0.647, p = 0.008), and attitudes was directly and positively correlated with practices (β = 1.195, 95% CI: 1.062-1.332, p = 0.007). Moreover, knowledge was indirectly and positively correlated with practice (β = 0.579, 95% CI: 0.434-0.805, p = 0.004). Conclusion Anemia patients have sufficient knowledge, negative attitudes, but proactive practices toward the toward disease management Comprehensive training programs are needed to improve anemia patients practices in this area.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutrient-related health problem in the world. There is still a lack of comprehensive comparative study on the efficacies of commonly used iron supplements such as polysaccharide iron complex (PIC), iron protein succinylate (IPS) and ferrous succinate (FS) for IDA. In this study, we compared the PIC, IPS and FS efficacies in IDA rats via intragastric administration. The results showed that the three iron supplements had similar efficacies. PIC/IPS/FS at a dose of 15 mg Fe/kg/d for 10 d increased the hematological and serum biochemical parameters to 2.15/2.12/2.18 (Hb), 1.71/1.67/1.69 (RBC), 2.10/2.11/2.12 (HCT), 1.26/1.22/1.22 (MCV), all 1.34 (MCH), 1.15/1.15/1.14 (MCHC), 1.94/1.82/1.91 (SF), 9.75/9.67/9.53 (SI), and 23.30/22.68/21.64 (TS) times, and reduced TIBC to 0.42/0.43/0.44 times, compared to untreated IDA rats. PIC performed slightly better than IPS and FS in restoring MCV level. Meanwhile, the heart, spleen and kidney coefficients reduced to 67%/74%/65% (heart), all 59% (spleen) and 87%/88%/88% (kidney), and the liver coefficient increased to 116%/115%/116%, compared to untreated IDA rats. The liver iron content was found to be more affected by IDA than the spleen iron content. PIC/IPS/FS at 15 mg Fe/kg/d increased organ iron contents to 4.20/3.97/4.03 times (liver) and 1.36/1.24/1.41 times (spleen) within 10 d compared to untreated IDA rats, and PIC-H and FS were slightly better than IPS in restoring spleen iron content. The results of this study can provide useful data information for the comparison of three iron supplements, PIC, IPS and FS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, there is a lack of clear guidance on hemoglobin (Hb) data quality parameters and plausible flagging ranges for population-representative surveys. There is a need to determine which properties of Hb data indicate lower data quality and increased measurement error and which represent intrinsic statistical properties of Hb distributions rather than quality problems. METHODS We explored statistical characteristics of Hb distributions and plausible exclusion ranges in population-representative surveys of non-pregnant women of reproductive age (WRA) (15-49 years, n = 401 surveys) and children (6-59 months, n = 461 surveys) conducted in refugee settings by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Hb distribution characteristics [standard deviation (SD), skewness and kurtosis] were compared to those from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). RESULTS Overall, 0.08% of child and 0.14% of WRA Hb values were outside of the previously proposed 4.0-18.0 g/dL plausible range. Surveys conducted in Uganda tended to have unusually high SD compared with surveys from other settings, possibly an indication of problematic measurement quality. We therefore used summary results on SD, skewness and kurtosis excluding surveys from Uganda when comparing with DHS results or proposing plausible ranges. Both WRA and child Hb distributions tended to be left-skewed and had excess positive kurtosis. Mean survey-level SD was greater, mean skewness more negative, and mean kurtosis more positive in WRA surveys compared to child surveys. All these findings were broadly similar to those from DHS surveys. Mean SD in DHS surveys was higher than that in our data for both children (1.48 vs. 1.34) and WRA (1.58 vs. 1.43). CONCLUSIONS We observed several statistical characteristics of Hb distributions that may not necessarily be indicative of data quality problems and bear strong similarities with the characteristics found in DHS surveys. Hb distributions tended to be negatively skewed and positively kurtotic, and SD in many surveys exceeded 1.5 (previously proposed upper plausible range). Based on our empirical evidence, surveys with skewness above + 0.2 and kurtosis below -0.5 or Hb SD outside the range of 1.1-1.55 g/dL for children (6-59 mo) or 1.1-1.65 g/dL for non-pregnant WRA (15-49 y) may require further quality investigation.

Abstract
Background In line with the growing industrial applications of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) in various fields, concerns about their potentially harmful consequences on the environment, human, and animal health are increasing. Giloy is considered an alternative medicine to treat various ailments. Giloy's potential in helping manage diabetes, alleviating arthritis and joint pain, and addressing skin disorders such as eczema and acne underscores its multifaceted role in traditional medicine. Moreover, it is deemed beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety levels, promoting liver health, and potentially impacting heart health by regulating cholesterol levels. Emerging research also explores its potential in cancer prevention. This study aimed to evaluate the hematotoxicity of CuONPs and the alleviating effect of giloy in adult rats. Materials and methods In this experiment, 28 laboratory rats were used, set to four groups (7/group), as follows: control group without any dose; CuONPs group administered copper oxide nanoparticles at 300 mg/kg/day; CuONPs + giloy group dosed with CuONPs at 300 mg/kg/day plus giloy at 100 mg/kg/day; giloy group treated only with giloy at 100 mg/kg/day. All treatments were given by gastric gavage and continued for 28 uninterrupted days. Results Dosing animals with CuONPs led to significant adverse changes in the examined blood profile. In contrast, when the animals were coadministered with giloy, restoring the disturbed blood levels was observed. Conclusion Copper oxide nanoparticles at a high dose had notable hematotoxicity in laboratory rats and, supplemented with giloy, could reduce this hematological toxicity.

Abstract
Objective Contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is a critical complication when applying contrast medium, and the risk factors of CA-AKI have not been fully clarified. This study aimed to explore the relationships of CA-AKI with erythrocyte parameters, anemia conditions, and sex differences in patients after coronary angiography (CAG). Methods In this retrospective study, 4,269 patients who underwent CAG were enrolled. CA-AKI was defined as an increase in plasma creatinine of at least 0.5 mg/dl (44 μmol/L) or 25% within 72 h after exposure to the contrast medium. Three erythrocyte parameters, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell (RBC) count, were collected on admission. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations of sex differences and erythrocyte parameters with CA-AKI in the overall population, restricted cubic splines to visualize these associations flexibly. Moreover, stratified and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. Results Overall, the mean (± standard deviations) age of patients was 67.05 ± 10.77 years, and 759 subjects (17.8%) developed CA-AKI. The results showed L-shaped relationships between erythrocyte parameters and CA-AKI incidence in each model (all P < 0.001). The incidence of CA-AKI was positively associated with the severity of anemia, while it showed no significant differences among the types of anemia. Moreover, female patients undergoing CAG had a higher risk of CA-AKI than male patients. Mediation analysis verified that erythrocyte parameters exerted an indirect effect on the sex differences of CA-AKI incidences. Conclusion In conclusion, females, perioperative anemia conditions, and lower erythrocyte parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit, and RBC count) were verified as risk factors of CA-AKI in patients undergoing CAG. Furthermore, lower erythrocyte parameters among females exerted indirect effects on the sex differences in CA-AKI incidence.
