Abstract
Herpes zoster (HZ) is a painful rash which typically affects older adults. This is of concern in Asia-Pacific given its aging population. As HZ epidemiology and burden are evolving, this systematic literature review aimed to update the current understanding of HZ burden and associated costs for selected Asia-Pacific locales. MEDLINE and Embase were searched for English articles of HZ studies conducted in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan. Eligible outcomes included HZ incidence and prevalence, occurrence of HZ-related complications, healthcare resource utilization, costs, and HZ-associated quality of life outcomes. This paper focused on HZ data in the general adult population (N = 90 articles). Substantial HZ-related disease and economic burden were observed in these locales, consistent with global trends. These findings reinforce the increasing burden of HZ and need for preventive strategies, which may include raising awareness and encouraging timely vaccination.

Abstract
Background The treatment of herpes zoster-related pain is challenging, and requires a variety of methods including pulse radio frequency modulation. Among them, single-time high-voltage long-term pulsed radiofrequency (HL-PRF) has been proved to be an effective treatment for subacute postherpetic neuralgia. However, it has the possibility of poor long-term curative effect and recurrence of neuralgia. In this study, we aim to identify the clinical efficacy and safety of twice repeated HL-PRF treatment in patients with subacute postherpetic neuralgia. Design We conducted a retrospective analysis of subacute postherpetic neuralgia patients who underwent HL-PRF treatment. Setting Pain Management Department of First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College. Patients We enrolled all patients with subacute postherpetic neuralgia, who underwent HL-PRF treatment from January 2023 to October 2023. Measurements The primary outcome variable was the visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores at 1, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after treatment. Secondary outcomes included Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) score, and total effective rate after treatment. Results A total of 63 patients were included in the analysis. Among them, 33 patients received single-time HL-PRF treatment (Group S) and 30 patients received twice repeated HL-PRF treatment (Group T). Pain scores, PSQI scores, and SF-36 score were reduced in both groups after treatment (P < 0.001). Compared to group S, the VAS scores, PSQI scores, anxiety scores, and depression scores were significantly lower at 1, 4, 8, and 12 weeks in group T. (P < 0.001). The total efficiency rate at 12 weeks after treatment of group T was statistically higher than that of group S (60.6% vs 86.7%, P < 0.05). Conclusion Twice repeated high-voltage long-duration PRF therapy demonstrates satisfactory efficacy in patients with subacute postherpetic neuralgia and is associated with no significant adverse reactions.

Abstract
Sleep is crucial for human health, insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality may negatively affect sleep function and lead to a state of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can result in various health problems, including chronic pain. The intricate relationship between sleep and pain is complex and intertwined, with daytime pain affecting sleep quality and poor sleep increasing pain intensity. The article first describes the influence of sleep on the onset and development of pain, and then explores the impact of daytime pain intensity on nighttime sleep quality and subsequent pain thresholds. However, the primary emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of oxidative stress in this bidirectional relationship. Although the exact mechanisms underlying sleep and chronic pain are unclear, this review focuses on the role of oxidative stress. Numerous studies on sleep deprivation have demonstrated that it can lead to varying degrees of increased pain sensitivity, while chronic pain leads to sleep deprivation and further exacerbates pain. Further research on the role of oxidative stress in the mechanism of sleep deprivation-induced pain sensitization seems reasonable. This article comprehensively reviews the current research on the interrelationship between sleep deprivation, pain and the crucial role of oxidative stress.

Abstract
Sleep problems was associated with increased risk for herpes zoster (HZ). This study examined subjects with insomnia or a combination of insomnia and depression and their risk of HZ. This retrospective cohort study included a total of 47,256 participants, with a control comprising 31,504 age- and sex-matched patients. Clinical data from 2000 to 2013 in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were used for analysis. Insomnia, depression, and HZ were defined according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification. Subjects with insomnia had a significantly higher incidence of HZ (2.77 per 1000 person-years) than the controls (1.81 per 1000 person-years) as well as a higher risk of developing HZ (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) = 1.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.35-1.93). Results shown subjects with insomnia durations of < 4 years, 4-6 years, and > 6 years had a significantly higher risk of HZ compared with the controls (AHR: 6.69, 95% CI 4.44-9.39; AHR: 4.42, 95% CI 3.07-6.36; AHR:1.38, 95% CI 1.14-1.87, respectively). We found a significantly higher risk of HZ in subjects with both insomnia and depression (AHR = 4.95; 95% CI = 3.99-7.02) than in those without related conditions. Patients with insomnia, and even more so those with comorbid depression, had a higher risk of developing HZ. This indicates a joint effect of insomnia and depression on HZ.

Abstract
Introduction Patients with neuropathic pain (NP) report a higher impairment of quality of life and sleep than patients with chronic pain without neuropathic characteristics. These include somatosensory peculiarities like allodynia, a surrogate marker for central sensitization. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the relation between symptoms of central sensitization and sleep disturbances in patients with NP. Methods Within this cross-sectional study, data sets of 3339 patients with chronic NP syndromes (painful diabetic polyneuropathy, n = 543; postherpetic neuralgia, n = 1480) or complex regional pain syndromes (CRPS, n = 1316) were analyzed. Neuropathic pain symptoms were assessed with the painDETECT questionnaire (PD-Q), depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and sleep impairment with items of the Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Scale in 4 subscales. The association of demographic/clinical data, somatosensory phenotype, depression, and pain intensity with sleep impairment was assessed by unadjusted Spearman correlation analyses and multivariable regression analyses. Results Sleep impairment was observed in all pain aetiologies although with some significant differences in the single sleep items. The intensity of the individual PD-Q items differed to some extent between the 3 pain entities, whereas the PD-Q sum score was similar. Thermal hyperalgesia and burning assessed by the PD-Q were significantly associated with sleep disturbance, adequacy, and quantity but not with sleep somnolence. Only depression and self-reported allodynia had a significant relation to all 4 sleep elements. Conclusion Beside depression, allodynia as a surrogate marker hints to a possible impact of central sensitization on the sleep disruption of patients with NP.

Abstract
Immunity is known to persist after vaccination for varicella zoster virus, but the duration of immunity in patients who develop herpes zoster (HZ) remains unknown. To investigate the association between a past history of HZ and its occurrence in the general population. The Shozu HZ (SHEZ) cohort study included data for 12 299 individuals aged ≥50 years with information on their HZ history. Cross-sectional and 3-year follow-up studies were carried out to analyze the associations between a history of HZ (yes <10 years, yes ≥10 years, no) and the proportion of positive varicella zoster virus skin test results (erythema diameter ≥5 mm) and the risk of HZ after adjusting for potential confounding factors including age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, sleep duration, and mental stress. The incidences of positive skin test results were 87.7% (470/536) for individuals with a history of HZ <10 years ago, 82.2% (396/482) for those with a history of HZ ≥10 years, and 80.2% (3614/4509) for those with no history of HZ. The multivariable odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of erythema diameter ≥5 mm were 2.07 (1.57-2.73) and 1. 39 (1.08-1.80) for individuals with a history <10 years and ≥10 years ago, respectively, compared with no history. The corresponding multivariable hazard ratios of HZ were 0.54 (0.34-0.85) and 1.16 (0.83-1.61), respectively. A past history of HZ <10 years ago may reduce the occurrence of HZ.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and pain fluctuations of methylcobalamin in combination with lidocaine local injection treatment for subacute herpetic neuralgia (SHN). Methods Seventy-nine women (60.4 ± 2.7 years) with thoracic SHN were enrolled and randomized to receive a combination of methylcobalamin and lidocaine local injection (MI, N=40), or a combination of lidocaine patch 5% and oral methylcobalamin (PO, N=39) for four weeks. Repeated-measures analyses of variance were used to evaluate the effect on pain levels. Generalized estimation equations were used to analyze the cause-effect relationship between pain fluctuations and influencing factors. Results At the treatment endpoint, the group, treatment time, and group interacted with treatment time effects of the pain scores and area were statistically significant (P<0.001), The pain scores were 2.9 ±0.9 (MI) and 4.3 ± 1.5 (PO). 80.00% (MI) or 28.21% (PO) of patients had pain scores ≤ 3, the odds ratio was 2.84 (95% CI: 1.68 to 4.79). The incidence of postherpetic neuralgia was 5.0% (2/40) at 3 months. Pain fluctuated repeatedly during treatment. The pain fluctuation increased from 8.75 log folds in the afternoon, to 79.85 log folds at night. With the ADLs level increasing from 1 to 3, the pain fluctuated from 4.28 to 17.70 log folds. Allodynia, itching, sleep quality, and ADLs were the significant influencing factors (P<0.05). Conclusion This study validated the efficacy of methylcobalamin combined with lidocaine for SHN, and confirmed that pain levels in patients with SHN had an obvious circadian rhythm. ADLs were an important cause of pain fluctuations.

Abstract
Data science continues to be recognized and used within healthcare due to the increased availability of large data sets and advanced analytics. It can be challenging for nurse leaders to remain apprised of this rapidly changing landscape. In this article, we describe our findings from a scoping literature review of papers published in 2019 that use data science to explore, explain, and/or predict 15 phenomena of interest to nurses. Fourteen of the 15 phenomena were associated with at least one paper published in 2019. We identified the use of many contemporary data science methods (eg, natural language processing, neural networks) for many of the outcomes. We found many studies exploring Readmissions and Pressure Injuries. The topics of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Acceptance, Burnout, Patient Safety, and Unit Culture were poorly represented. We hope that the studies described in this article help readers: (1) understand the breadth and depth of data science's ability to improve clinical processes and patient outcomes that are relevant to nurses and (2) identify gaps in the literature that are in need of exploration.

Abstract
Introduction Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a neuropathic pain secondary to shingles. Studies have shown that early pain intervention can reduce the incidence or intensity of PHN. The aim of this study was to predict whether a patient with acute herpetic neuralgia will develop PHN and to help clinicians make better decisions. Method Five hundred two patients with shingles were reviewed and classified according to whether they had PHN. The risk factors associated with PHN were determined by univariate analysis. Logistic regression and random forest algorithms were used to do machine learning, and then the prediction accuracies of the two algorithms were compared, choosing the superior one to predict the next 60 new cases. Results Age, NRS score, rash site, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) score, antiviral therapy and immunosuppression were found related to the occurrence of PHN. The NRS score was the most closely related factor with an importance of 0.31. As for accuracy, the random forest was 96.24%, better than that of logistic regression in which the accuracy was 92.83%. Then, the random forest model was used to predict 60 newly diagnosed patients with herpes zoster, and the accuracy rate was 88.33% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 77.43–95.18%. Conclusions This study provides an idea and a method in which, by analyzing the data of previous cases, we can develop a predictive model to predict whether patients with shingles will develop PHN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a well-known painful syndrome. Acupuncture is a treatment for PHN. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of pain control between press needle and electroacupuncture (EA) in PHN patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study by a review of PHN patients treated with the press needle and the EA and compared the Pain visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after treatment. Propensity score matching was applied to adjust the confounding. RESULTS 48 patients in each group had a matched propensity score. The absolute reduction of VAS in the press needle and the EA groups were not different (5.4±2.8 vs. 5.4±2.9, p=0.971). The VAS score improvement was not statistically different between groups. CONCLUSION The Press needle and the EA are equally effective in the treatment of PHN.
