Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Inflammatory proteins are implicated in psychiatric disorders, but the causality and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. STUDY DESIGN We conducted bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) using genetic variants from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for 91 inflammatory proteins (N = 14 824) and 11 psychiatric disorders (N = 9725 to 1 035 760). The primary analysis used the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, with additional sensitivity analyses to confirm robustness. A two-step MR approach assessed whether brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) mediated the observed effects. STUDY RESULTS Forward MR analysis found the protective effect of CD40 on schizophrenia (SCZ) (IVW OR = 0.90, P = 5.29 × 10-6) and bipolar disorder (BD) (IVW OR = 0.89, P = 5.08 × 10-6). Reverse MR demonstrated that increased genetic risk of Tourette's syndrome (TS) was associated with reduced Fms-associated tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (Flt3L) levels (Flt3L) (Wald Ratio beta = -0.42, P = 1.99 × 10-7). The protective effect of CD40 on SCZ was partially mediated by the modulation of fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the right and left superior frontal occipital fasciculus, with mediation proportions of 9.6% (P = .025) and 11.5% (P = .023), respectively. CONCLUSION CD40 exerts an immunoprotective effect on SCZ and BD, and the effect of CD40 on SCZ was partially mediated through modulation of FA values in the superior frontal occipital fasciculus. These findings enhance comprehension of the etiology of these psychiatric conditions and underscore the promise of therapeutic strategies aimed at inflammatory proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although symptoms of depressive episodes in patients with bipolar depressive episodes (BDE) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are similar, the treatment strategies for these disorders are completely different, suggesting that BDE and MDD have different neurobiological backgrounds. In this study, we examined the relationship between brain function and clinical symptoms, particularly cognitive function, in female individuals with bipolar disorder and MDD experiencing depressive episodes. METHODS Regional homogeneity (ReHo) was analyzed in 51 medication-free female patients with BDE, 63 medication-free female patients with MDD, and 45 female healthy controls (HCs). Depressive symptom severity was assessed using the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-24), and multidimensional cognitive function was evaluated using the MATRICS Consensus Cognition Battery. Partial correlation analysis was used to explore the links between the brain regions and clinical characteristics. A support vector machine (SVM) was used to assess the classification accuracy. RESULTS Compared with HCs, patients with BDE and MDD had decreased ReHo in the left lobule VI of the cerebellum and increased ReHo in the left precuneus. Patients with BDE also had reduced ReHo in the left lobules IV-V of the cerebellum and increased ReHo in the right putamen, unlike patients with MDD who had no significant differences in these regions. Patients with BDE exhibited more severe cognitive deficits in processing speed, attention, word learning, and overall cognitive function than those with MDD. In patients with BDE, a significant negative correlation was found between the right putamen and HAMD-24 scores. However, no significant association was observed between abnormal ReHo levels and cognitive function. The SVM effectively differentiated between patients with BDE, MDD, and HCs. CONCLUSION Cognitive impairment was more severe in female patients with BDE than in those with MDD. Changes in the ReHo values of the right putamen and left lobules IV-V may serve as unique neuroimaging markers for BDE. Alterations in the ReHo values of the left precuneus and left lobule VI could serve as common pathophysiological mechanisms for BDE and MDD in women and indicate depressive states.

Abstract
AIM Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression have been associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD); however, few studies have directly compared the risk of PD development between patients with BD and major depression while considering relevant risk factors and psychotropic medications. METHODS Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 21,186 patients with BD, 21,188 patients with major depression, and 42,374 controls were enrolled between 2001 and 2009, and followed until the end of 2011. Individuals who developed PD during the follow-up period were identified. Cox regression models were used to analyze the hazard ratio (HR) of developing PD, adjusting for demographic factors, comorbidities, and psychotropic medication usage. RESULTS Both patients with BD [HR 8.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) 6.35-11.72] and those with major depression (HR 5.68, 95% CI 4.15-7.78) had an elevated risk of subsequent PD compared to the controls. Patients with BD were associated with a 51% increased risk of subsequent PD compared with patients with major depression. Long-term treatment with antiepileptic mood stabilizers was associated with increased PD risk among patients with late-onset BD and high Charlson comorbidity index scores. Lithium was not associated with an increased PD risk. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights an elevated PD risk in patients with BD and major depression compared to the controls, with BD patients at highest risk. Further research is needed to elucidate the complex interplay between psychotropic medications and neurodegenerative processes in BD, aiming to optimize therapeutic strategies and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence indicates that individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at an increased risk of experiencing depressive disorders, which may accelerate its progression. However, the relationship between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and depression in CKD individuals remains unclear. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to assess whether such a relationship exists. To this end, the CKD cohort of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2020 was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analyses and a generalized additive approach. A recursive algorithm was employed to pinpoint the turning point, constructing a dual-segment linear regression model. The study included 10,563 participants. After controlling for all variables, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals indicated a 1.24 (range, 1.09-1.42) relationship between the TyG index and depression in the CKD cohort. The findings underscored an asymmetrical association, with a pivotal value at a TyG index 9.29. Above this threshold, the adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) was 1.10 (range, 0.93-1.31). This relationship was significant among the obese subgroups. The study results highlight the complex relationship between the TyG index and depression among American adults with CKD.

Abstract
Introduction: Cannabis is the most used illicit drug in the United States. With many states passing legislation to permit its recreational use, there is concern that cannabis use among adolescents could increase dramatically in the coming years. Historically, it has been difficult to model real-world cannabis use to investigate the causal relationship between cannabis use in adolescence and behavioral and neurobiological effects in adulthood. Materials and Methods: We used a response-contingent vapor administration model to investigate long-term effects of cannabis use during adolescence on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and mPFC-dependent behaviors in male and female rats. Results: Adolescent (35- to 55-day-old) female rats had significantly higher rates of responding for vaporized Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-dominant cannabis extract (CANTHC) compared with adolescent males. In adulthood (70-110 days old), female, but not male, CANTHC rats also took more trials to reach criterion and made more regressive errors in an automated attentional set-shifting task compared with vehicle rats, thereby indicating sex differences in behavioral flexibility impairments. Notably, sex-treatment interactions were not observed when rats of each sex were exposed to a noncontingent CANTHC vapor dosing regimen that approximated CANTHC vapor deliveries earned by females. No differences were observed in effort-based decision making in either sex. In the mPFC, female (but not male) CANTHC rats displayed more reactive microglia with no changes in myelin basic protein expression or dendritic spine density. Conclusion: Altogether, these data reveal important sex differences in rates of responding for CANTHC vapor in adolescence that may confer enduring alterations to mPFC structure and function and suggest that there may be subtle differences in the effects of response-contingent versus noncontingent cannabis exposure that should be systematically examined in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression, a prevalent mental disorder, has shown an increasing trend in recent years, imposing a significant burden on health and society. Adequate sleep has been proven to reduce the incidence of depression. This study seeks to explore how Weekend Catch-up Sleep (WCS) is connected with the prevalence of depression in the American population. METHODS The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) provides representative data for the U.S. POPULATION We utilized data from the 2017-2018 and 2019-2020 cycles. Depression was operationally defined as a PHQ-9 score exceeding 10. WCS duration was categorized into five groups: no change in sleep duration (=0 h), decreased sleep duration (<0), short catch-up sleep duration (>0 h, ≤1 h), moderate catch-up sleep duration (>1 h, <2 h), and long catch-up sleep duration (≥2 h). RESULTS Among the 8039 individuals, the distribution of WCS duration was as follows: no change (WCS = 0 h) in 2999 individuals (37.3 %), decreased sleep (WCS < 0 h) in 1199 individuals (14.9 %), short catch-up sleep (0 h < WCS ≤ 1 h) in 1602 individuals (19.9 %), moderate catch-up sleep (1 h < WCS < 2 h) in 479 individuals (6.0 %), and long catch-up sleep (WCS ≥ 2 h) in 1760 individuals (21.9 %). Acting by adjustment for all covariates in a multiple regression analysis, we discovered that persons with 1 to 2 h of weekend catch-up sleep had a substantially low prevalence of depression concerning those with WCS = 0 (OR 0.22, 95 % CI 0.08-0.59, P = 0.007). CONCLUSION The prevalence of depression in individuals engaging in weekend catch-up sleep for 1 to 2 h is lower than those who do not catch up on weekends. This discovery on the treatment and prevention of depression provides a new perspective. However, further prospective research and clinical trials are needed for a comprehensive investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pregnant women may need to undergo non-obstetric surgery under general anesthesia owing to medical needs, and pregnant women frequently experience sleep disturbances during late gestation. Preclinical studies demonstrated that maternal isoflurane exposure (MISO) or maternal sleep deprivation (MSD) contributed to cognitive impairments in offspring. Research studies in mice have revealed that SD can aggravate isoflurane-induced cognitive deficits. However, it remains unclear whether MSD aggravates MISO-induced cognitive deficits in offspring. The purpose of this research was to explore the combined effects of MSD and MISO on offspring cognitive function and the role of neuroinflammation and synaptic function in the process of MSD + MISO. METHODS Pregnant mice were exposed to 1.4% isoflurane by inhalation for 4 h on gestational day (GD) 14. Dams were then subjected to SD for 6 h (12:00-18:00 h) during GD15-21. At 3 months of age, the offspring mice were subjected to the Morris water maze test to assess cognitive function. Then the levels of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers and synaptic function-related proteins were assessed using molecular biology methods. RESULTS The results of this study demonstrated that MISO led to cognitive dysfunction, an effect that was aggravated by MSD. In addition, MSD exacerbated the maternal isoflurane inhalation, leading to an enhancement in the expression levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha and a reduction in the hippocampal levels of IL-10, synaptophysin, post-synaptic density-95, growth-associated protein-43, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor. CONCLUSION Our findings revealed that MSD aggravated the cognitive deficits induced by MISO in male offspring mice, and these results were associated with neuroinflammation and alternations in synaptic function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent evidences have shown sex-differential cognitive deficits in bipolar disorder (BD) and differences in cognitions across BD subtypes. However, the sex-specific effect on cognitive impairment in BD subtype II (BD-II) remains obscure. The aim of the current study was to examine whether cognitive deficits differ by gender in youth with BD-II depression. METHOD This cross-sectional study recruited 125 unmedicated youths with BD-II depression and 140 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs). The Chinese version of the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was used to assess cognitive functions. Mood state was assessed using the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (24-HDRS) and the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was conducted. RESULT Compared with HCs, patients with BD-II depression had lower scores on MCCB composite and its seven cognitive domains (all p < 0.001). After controlling for age and education, MANCOVA revealed significant gender-by-group interaction on attention/vigilance (F = 6.224, df = 1, p = 0.013), verbal learning (F = 9.847, df = 1, p = 0.002), visual learning (F = 4.242, df = 1, p = 0.040), and composite (F = 8.819, df = 1, p = 0.003). Post hoc analyses suggested that males performed worse in the above-mentioned MCCB tests than females in BD-II depression. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated generalized cognitive deficits in unmedicated youths with BD-II depression. Male patients performed more serious cognitive impairment on attention/vigilance, verbal learning, and visual learning compared to female patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of antidiabetic agents in the treatment of major depressive disorder and bipolar depression. METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of antidiabetic agents in major depressive disorder or bipolar depression were searched in three electronic databases and three clinical trial registry websites from their inception up to October 2023. The differences in changes in the depression rating scale scores from baseline to endpoint or pre-defined sessions, response rate, remission rate, rate of side effects and dropout rate between antidiabetic agents and placebo were meta-analyzed. RESULTS Six RCTs involving 399 participants were included in the final meta-analysis, which did not find that antidiabetics outperformed the placebo in reducing depressive symptoms. The standardized mean difference (SMD) in the depression scores from baseline to endpoint was 0.25 (95% CI -0.1, 0.61). However, a subgroup analysis found a significant difference between antidiabetics and placebos in reducing depressive symptoms in Middle Eastern populations, with an SMD of 0.89 (95% CI 0.44, 1.34). CONCLUSIONS The current meta-analysis does not support the efficacy of antidiabetics being superior to the placebo in the treatment of unipolar and bipolar depression. However, a subgroup analysis indicates that patients from the Middle East may benefit from adding an antidiabetic medication to their ongoing medication(s) for their depression. Larger studies with good-quality study designs are warranted.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that hypertensive individuals have a greater risk of developing depression, and depression can also increase the incidence of hypertension. In the hypertensive population, the association between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and depression remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the association between TyG index and depression in hypertensive people through the cross-sectional study of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2018). To assess the relationship between TyG index and depression in hypertensive population, we conducted weighted multiple logistic regression models and used a generalized additive model to probe for nonlinear correlations. In addition, we employed a recursive algorithm to determine the inflection point and established a two-piece linear regression model. This study enrolled 5897 individuals. In the model adjusted for all covariates, the ORs (95% CI) for the relationship between TyG index and depression in hypertensive population were 1.32 (1.12-1.54). A nonlinear association was found between TyG index and depression, with an inflection point at 8.7. After the inflection point, the ORs (95% CI) were 1.44 (1.15-1.79). Only the interaction with the obese population was statistically significant. Our study highlighted a nonlinear association between TyG index and depression in American hypertensive adults.

Abstract
This study investigated the efficacy and safety of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) in relapse prevention of bipolar disorder (BD), addressing the shortcomings of current medications. Thirty-one stable BD patients were randomized to receive n-3 PUFAs or placebo for 6 months and intergroup differences in the incidence of the recurrence of bipolar depression were assessed. Differences in depression severity, manic symptoms, and routine biochemical parameters were also assessed. Interestingly, n-3 PUFAs demonstrated a favorable preventive effect on bipolar depression recurrence (p=0.005; Log-Rank) and reduced depression severity compared to placebo, and were well-tolerated, suggesting their potential as a safe prophylactic therapy for BD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are characterized by specific alterations of mood. In both disorders, alterations in cognitive domains such as impulsivity, decision-making, and risk-taking have been reported. Identification of similarities and differences of these domains in BD and MDD could give further insight into their etiology. The present study assessed impulsivity, decision-making, and risk-taking behavior in BD and MDD patients from bipolar multiplex families. METHODS Eighty-two participants (BD type I, n = 25; MDD, n = 26; healthy relatives (HR), n = 17; and healthy controls (HC), n = 14) underwent diagnostic interviews and selected tests of a cognitive battery assessing neurocognitive performance across multiple subdomains including impulsivity (response inhibition and delay aversion), decision-making, and risk behavior. Generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were used to analyze whether the groups differed in the respective cognitive domains. RESULTS Participants with BD and MDD showed higher impulsivity levels compared to HC; this difference was more pronounced in BD participants. BD participants also showed lower inhibitory control than MDD participants. Overall, suboptimal decision-making was associated with both mood disorders (BD and MDD). In risk-taking behavior, no significant impairment was found in any group. LIMITATIONS As sample size was limited, it is possible that differences between BD and MDD may have escaped detection due to lack of statistical power. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that alterations of cognitive domains-while present in both disorders-are differently associated with BD and MDD. This underscores the importance of assessing such domains in addition to mere diagnosis of mood disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have revealed the frontoparietal network (FPN) plays a key role in the imaging pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). However, network homogeneity (NH) in the FPN among bipolar mania (BipM), remitted bipolar disorder (rBD), and healthy controls (HCs) remains unknown. The present study aimed to explore whether NH within the FPN can be used as an imaging biomarker to differentiate BipM from rBD and to predict treatment efficacy for patients with BipM. METHODS Sixty-six patients with BD (38 BipM and 28 rBD) and 60 HCs participated in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological tests. Independent component analysis and NH analysis were applied to analyze the imaging data. RESULTS Relative to HCs, BipM patients displayed increased NH in the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and rBD patients displayed increased NH in the right inferior parietal lobule (IPL). Compared to rBD patients, BipM patients displayed reduced NH in the right IPL. Furthermore, support vector machine results exhibited that NH values in the right IPL could distinguish BipM patients from rBD patients with 69.70 %, 57.89 %, and 91.67 % for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, respectively, and support vector regression results exhibited a significant association between predicted and actual symptomatic improvement based on the reduction ratio of the Young` Mania Rating Scale total scores (r = 0.466, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The study demonstrated distinct NH values in the FPN could serve as a valuable neuroimaging biomarker capable of differentiating patients with BipM and rBD, and NH values of the left MFG as a potential predictor of early treatment response in patients with BipM.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by extreme mood swings ranging from manic/hypomanic to depressive episodes. The severity, duration, and frequency of these episodes can vary widely between individuals, significantly impacting quality of life. Individuals with BD spend almost half their lives experiencing mood symptoms, especially depression, as well as associated clinical dimensions such as anhedonia, fatigue, suicidality, anxiety, and neurovegetative symptoms. Persistent mood symptoms have been associated with premature mortality, accelerated aging, and elevated prevalence of treatment-resistant depression. Recent efforts have expanded our understanding of the neurobiology of BD and the downstream targets that may help track clinical outcomes and drug development. However, as a polygenic disorder, the neurobiology of BD is complex and involves biological changes in several organelles and downstream targets (pre-, post-, and extra-synaptic), including mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, altered monoaminergic and glutamatergic systems, lower neurotrophic factor levels, and changes in immune-inflammatory systems. The field has thus moved toward identifying more precise neurobiological targets that, in turn, may help develop personalized approaches and more reliable biomarkers for treatment prediction. Diverse pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches targeting neurobiological pathways other than neurotransmission have also been tested in mood disorders. This article reviews different neurobiological targets and pathophysiological findings in non-canonical pathways in BD that may offer opportunities to support drug development and identify new, clinically relevant biological mechanisms. These include: neuroinflammation; mitochondrial function; calcium channels; oxidative stress; the glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3) pathway; protein kinase C (PKC); brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF); histone deacetylase (HDAC); and the purinergic signaling pathway.

Abstract
Seasonality patterns are reported in various psychiatric disorders. The current paper summarizes findings on brain adaptations associated with seasonal changes, factors that contribute to individual differences and their implications for psychiatric disorders. Changes in circadian rhythms are likely to prominently mediate these seasonal effects since light strongly entrains the internal clock modifying brain function. Inability of circadian rhythms to accommodate to seasonal changes might increase the risk for mood and behavior problems as well as worse clinical outcomes in psychiatric disorders. Understanding the mechanisms that account for inter-individual variations in seasonality is relevant to the development of individualized prevention and treatment for psychiatric disorders. Despite promising findings, seasonal effects are still understudied and only controlled as a covariate in most brain research. Rigorous neuroimaging studies with thoughtful experimental designs, powered sample sizes and high temporal resolution alongside deep characterization of the environment are needed to better understand the seasonal adaptions of the human brain as a function of age, sex, and geographic latitude and to investigate the mechanisms underlying the alterations in seasonal adaptation in psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because of a relative dearth of longitudinal studies, the directionality of the relationship between mood and inflammation among patients with bipolar disorder (BD) is still unclear. We aimed to investigate the longitudinal associations of pro-inflammatory markers with mood symptom severity in BD. METHODS Hundred and thirty-two adult patients with BD were enrolled. At the baseline and 1-year follow-up visit, all participants received mood assessment with Montgomery Åsberg depression rating scale (MADRS) and Young mania rating scale, and underwent blood draws to quantify metabolic profile and serum levels of the pro-inflammatory markers, including soluble interleukin-6 receptor, soluble tumor necrosis factor-α receptor type 1 (sTNF-αR1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and C-reactive protein. A four-factor model of MADRS, consisting of sadness, negative thoughts, detachment, and neurovegetative symptoms, were applied. RESULTS At baseline, 65 patients with BD were in depressed state, and 67 patients with BD were in euthymic state. Among patients in depressed state, baseline MADRS total score positively correlated with sTNF-αR1 level at follow-up. While baseline sTNF-αR1 level positively predicted sadness symptom in euthymic patients with BD who later developed depression (n = 22), sadness in patients with bipolar depression predicted later increase in serum sTNF-αR1 level even after remission (n = 17). Moreover, lithium had a stronger effect of lowering peripheral sTNF-αR1 level as compared with other mood stabilizers. CONCLUSION Our results indicate the bidirectional inflammation-depression relationship in BD.
