Abstract
Background Prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality. Rare research in China has evaluated the prevalence of prediabetes among children and adolescents using the HbA1c criterion or the combined FPG-or-HbA1c diagnostic criterion, and researchers paid no attention to the distributions of blood glucose in Shenzhen, especially for juveniles. Methods We conducted a school-based cross-sectional study based on the first-year students from 17 primary, middle, and high schools. Prediabetes was defined as FPG of 5.6-6.9 mmol/L or HbA1c of 5.7%-6.4%. The crude and standardized prevalence of prediabetes with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was estimated. Results A total of 7519 participants, aged 6 to 17 years, were included. For all subjects, the crude prevalence (95% CI) of prediabetes was 1.49% (1.21-1.77), 8.72% (8.08-9.36), and 9.80% (9.13-10.47) by the FPG-only, HbA1c-only, and FPG-or-HbA1c criteria, respectively. Based on the 2010 Shenzhen census population, the standardized prevalence was 1.56% (males 1.85%, females 1.19%), 11.05% (males 11.47%, females 10.53%), and 12.19% (males 13.01%, females 11.15%) by the corresponding criteria. The proportion of prediabetes was higher for males than females, and the prevalence decreased with grade for males but increased for females. The association of BMI and prediabetes was U-shaped curve, indicating higher rates of prediabetes for underweight and obesity people. Conclusion The blood glucose status of children and adolescents in Shenzhen is worrisome, and the early detection and management of prediabetes are imperative.

Abstract
A simple, robust, and characterized adiposity indicator may be appropriate to be used as a risk screening tool for identifying metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents. This study used dual adolescent populations to develop and validate efficient adiposity indicators from 12 characterized candidates for identifying MetS that may occur during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Data from the adolescent Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (n = 1920, 12–18 years) and the multilevel Risk Profiles for adolescent MetS study (n = 2727, 12–16 years) were respectively used as training and validation datasets. The diagnostic criteria defined by the International Diabetes Federation for adolescents (IDF-adoMetS) and the Joint Interim Statement for adults (JIS-AdMetS) were employed to evaluate MetS. In the training dataset, principal component analysis converted 12 interrelated obesity indices into bodyfat-, lipid-, and body-shape-enhanced groups, with the first two characteristic-groups having a higher discriminatory capability in identifying IDF-adoMetS and JIS-AdMetS. In the validation dataset, abdominal volume index (AVI) among girls and waist circumference (WC) among boys were respectively validated to have a higher Youden’s index (0.740–0.816 and 0.798–0.884) in identifying the two MetS. Every 7.4 and 4.3 positive tests of AVI (cutoff = 13.96) had an accurate IDF-adoMetS and JIS-AdMetS, respectively, and every 32.4 total tests of WC (cutoff = 90.5 cm) had a correct identification for the two MetS. This study stresses the discriminatory capability of bodyfat- and lipid-enhanced adiposity indicators for identifying MetS. AVI and WC were, respectively, supported as a risk screening tool for identifying female and male MetS as adolescents transition to adulthood.

High sugar-sweetened beverage intake frequency is associated with smoking, irregular meal intake and higher serum uric acid in Taiwanese adolescents. J Nutr Sci 2020; 9:e7. Abstract
Types of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) can differ greatly between countries, with greater consumption of sweetened tea in Asia. This study aimed to understand changes in SSB consumption by adolescents in Taiwan over 18 years and their association with demographic characteristics and clinical outcome. This study used survey data from the 1993-1996 and 2010-2011 Nutrition and Health Surveys in Taiwan. Participants were high school students aged 13 to 18 years. Data were weighted and analysed using SUDAAN 11.0 and SAS 9.4. Participants were asked about intake frequencies of SSB and were grouped into four different SSB intake groups based on the combination of high or low frequency (including moderate frequency) of intake of sweetened tea and soda/sports/energy drinks. Results indicated over 99 % of teens reported having at least one SSB in the past week. Smoking status was significantly associated with SSB intake types with high tea intake (high tea and low soda (HL) group, OR 7·56, P < 0·001; high tea and high soda (HH) group, OR 9·96, P < 0·001). After adjustment for potential confounders, adolescents in the low tea and high soda (LH) group (β = 0·05, P = 0·034) had significantly higher mean serum uric acid values. In conclusion, sugary tea remains the SSB of choice for Taiwanese adolescents. Those with a frequent intake of soda/sports/energy drinks had a higher chance of being hyperuricaemic.

Abstract
PURPOSE Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) is associated with incident diabetes, cardiovascular risk, and markers of atherosclerosis in early adulthood. We aimed to explore the 10-year change in IFG prevalence among adolescent participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study, a population-based study from Iran. METHODS For our study, we used data on fasting plasma glucose (FPG), anthropometric, and demographic information of 11 to 19-year-old adolescents in study periods I (1999-2005; 1415 boys, 1583 girls) and II (2011-2014; 477 boys, 469 girls). Sex-adjusted and sex-stratified multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship of the study period (reference: study period I) with IFG. RESULTS The prevalence of IFG, general obesity, and central obesity increased from 7%, 13.3%, and 18.8% in study period I to 16.6%, 24%, and 37.4% in study period II; while a favorable trend was seen for blood pressure, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. In the fully adjusted model, being older (age group 15-19 vs 11-14 years) and female sex were associated with lower risk. Being overweight and obese increased the risk by risk ratios (confidence interval) of 1.57 (1.17-2.11) and 1.63 (1.15-2.30), respectively. Central adiposity did not remain as an independent risk factor. Nevertheless, study period persisted as a significant factor despite all adjustments [2.20 (1.81-2.68)]. Results in the sex-stratified models were generally the same. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that the over 2-fold rise in IFG prevalence among adolescents was not solely dependent on general and central obesity.

Abstract
Clustering of metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk components in childhood has been linked to a higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. By using data from the 2010⁻2011 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan, this study investigated epidemic patterns and correlates for the clustering of MetS risk components. A total of 1920 adolescents aged 12⁻18 years were included in this study. The MetS diagnostic criteria defined by the Taiwan Pediatric Association (TPA) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for adolescents and the criteria defined by the Joint Interim Statement for adults (JIS-Adult) were used to evaluate MetS and its abnormal components. The prevalence of TPA-, IDF-, and JIS-Adult-defined MetS was 4.1%, 3.0%, and 4.0%, with 22.1%, 19.3%, and 17.7%⁻18.1% of adolescents having high fasting glucose, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and central obesity, respectively. A 0.4-to-0.5-fold decreased risk of having ≥2 MetS abnormal components was detected among adolescents who consumed ≥1 serving/week of dairy products and fresh fruits. Boys who consumed ≥7 drinks/week of soda and girls who consumed ≥7 drinks/week of tea had a 4.6- and 5.2-fold risk of MetS, respectively. In conclusion, our findings revealed significant dimensions of adolescent MetS, including detecting population-specific prevalent patterns for MetS risk components and their clustering, and emphasized on health promotion activities that reduce sugar-sweetened beverage intake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prediabetes, a high-risk state for developing diabetes, has become more prevalent among children and adolescents in recent decades. This study sought to estimate the prevalence of prediabetes and assess its association with adiposity among adolescents in Kuwait. Also, to determine whether maternal and paternal history of diabetes associate with offspring prediabetes in a sex-specific manner. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted by enrolling students (n = 1959; aged 14-19 years) attending high schools across Kuwait. Body mass index-for-age z-scores were estimated using the World Health Organization growth reference. Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was measured in capillary blood using point-of-care testing. Prediabetes was defined according to the diagnostic criteria of the American Diabetes Association (ADA; 5.7 ≤ HbA1c% ≤ 6.4) and the International Expert Committee (IEC; 6.0 ≤ HbA1c% ≤ 6.4). Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Poisson regression with robust variance estimation. RESULTS According to the ADA criteria, 33.3% (620/1845) of participants had prediabetes; whereas, 8.5% (157/1845) met the IEC definition for prediabetes. Subjects classified as obese had higher prevalence of prediabetes compared to children in the thinness/normal group (aPR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.44-1.95). Analysis stratified by offspring sex showed that maternal history of diabetes is associated with prediabetes among male offspring (aPR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.02-1.63). In contrast, paternal history of diabetes showed an association with prediabetes among female offspring (aPR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01-1.48). CONCLUSIONS Prediabetes affects a substantial proportion of adolescents in Kuwait and adiposity and parental diabetes being the main associated factors with prediabetes.

Abstract
Obesity has been estimated to decrease life expectancy by as little as 0.8 to as much as 7 years being the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States after smoking. Along with the increase in the prevalence of obesity, there has been a dramatic rise of the prevalence of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes among adolescents. Despite that, very little is known about the pathogenesis of these conditions in pediatrics and about how we could detect prediabetes in an early stage in order to prevent full blown diabetes. In this review we summarize the current knowledge on the pathophysiology of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in adolescents and describe how biomarkers of beta-cell function might help identifying those individuals who are prone to progress from normal glucose tolerance towards prediabetes and overt type 2 diabetes. To better understand and fight this disease, we will need to explore and develop novel therapeutic strategies and individuate more sensitive and specific biomarkers that can allow an earlier detection of the disease.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the PPARGC1A and UCP1 genes on impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the haplotype-based interaction between these genes.A cross-sectional study was conducted by cluster sampling in Henan province, China. Based on the level of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and the history of T2DM, the participants were divided into 2 groups; 83 individuals were in the IFG+DM group (those with IFG or T2DM) and 445 individuals were in the NFPG group (those with normal FPG). Kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA), a haplotype-based gene-gene interaction method, which can increase the biological interpretability and extract nonlinear characteristics of SNPs, was used to analyze the correlation and interaction between PPARGC1A and UCP1 genes.The age, BMI, total cholesterol and triglycerides were statistically different between 2 groups (P ≤ .001). Haplotype analysis showed no significant difference in frequency distribution between the 2 groups when the PPARGC1A or UCP1 gene was tested (P > .05). KCCA analysis showed that the maximum kernel canonical correlation coefficient of the PPARGC1A and UCP1 genes was 0.9977 and 0.9995 in the IFG+DM and NPFG groups, respectively. A haplotype-based gene-gene interaction was observed significantly (U = -6.28, P < .001), indicating the possibility of an interaction between haplotype AAG of the PPARGC1A gene and haplotypes CTCG (odds ratio [OR] = 1.745, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.069-2.847) and CTCA (OR = 0.239, 95% CI 0.060-0.958) of the UCP1 gene.Haplotype-based interaction between the PPARGC1A and UCP1 genes is associated with IFG or T2DM among residents in Henan, China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Taiwanese adolescents' unhealthy lifestyles (e.g., unhealthy eating and sedentary behavior) are associated with excess weight and obesity, which affect their physical and mental health (e.g., depression). Because adolescents' beliefs about healthy lifestyles predict their actual lifestyles, a valid and reliable tool to measure their beliefs about healthy lifestyles is needed. METHODS The Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale (HLBS) was translated into Chinese based on recommended guidelines. A convenience sample of 186 Taiwanese adolescents completed the Chinese version Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale (CHLBS) anonymously. We used Cronbach's α to determine the internal consistency of the CHLBS and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to examine the factor structure. RESULTS The Cronbach's α for the CHLBS was .94. Exploratory analysis suggested that there were two factors and explained 57% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable fit. CONCLUSION The CHLBS is a reliable and valid scale. It can be used to gather information about Taiwanese adolescents' beliefs about healthy lifestyles, which will assist in developing culturally and developmentally relevant interventions.

Abstract
AIM To examine the association between insomnia with short sleep duration and hypercholesterolemia in Taiwanese adults. BACKGROUND Previous studies mostly focused on the association between sleep duration and hyperlipidemia, but the results were not consistent. Besides, very few studies extensively examined the association between insomnia and hypercholesterolemia. This study hypothesized that insomnia with short sleep duration is associated with hypercholesterolemia. DESIGN Secondary data analysis. This study analysed the latest database of the cross-sectional Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan which was released on 2011 (data collected between 2005-2008) and collected data using stratified three-staged probability sampling design. METHODS This study analysed 1533 participants aged between 19-64 (733 males and 800 females) and used logistic regression model to calculate the odds ratio and the 95% confidence interval of insomnia with short sleep duration to hypercholesterolemia. Controlled confounders included age, gender, sample weight, body mass index, waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose, hypertension and diabetes. RESULTS Insomnia with 5-6 hours of sleep duration was significantly associated with hypercholesterolemia. The odds ratio of mild insomnia or moderate/severe insomnia with 5-6 hours of sleep duration to hypercholesterolemia was higher, compared with the reference group (without insomnia and >6 hours of sleep duration). CONCLUSION Insomnia with short sleep duration was associated with increased odds of hypercholesterolemia. Caregivers in clinical practice should watch out for the effect brought by this novel factor.
