Abstract
[Purpose] The simultaneous application of static stretching and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to calf muscles may enhance physiological parameters in young and healthy individuals; however, the efficacy of this intervention and potential sex variation remain to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate these aspects. [Participants and Methods] Thirty healthy university students (15 males and 15 females) participated in this study. All participants simultaneously underwent static stretching and NMES of the calf muscles for 4 min while lying on an upright and tilted table. The mean differences in the dorsiflexion angle (DFA), finger-floor distance (FFD), and straight leg raising (SLR) angle before and after the intervention were calculated. Sex variations were assessed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). [Results] The DFA, FFD, and SLR angle exhibited significant effects on time. No significant sex variations were observed between the groups. [Conclusion] Simultaneous static stretching and NMES of the calf muscles potentially enhanced the DFA, FFD, and SLR angle in healthy university students, irrespective of sex.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increases in maximal strength and muscle volume represent central aims of training interventions. Recent research suggested that the chronic application of stretch may be effective in inducing hypertrophy. The present systematic review therefore aimed to syntheisize the evidence on changes of strength and muscle volume following chronic static stretching. METHODS Three data bases were sceened to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis. Studies using randomized, controlled trials with longitudinal (≥ 2 weeks) design, investigating strength and muscle volume following static stretching in humans, were included. Study quality was rated by two examiners using the PEDro scale. RESULTS A total of 42 studies with 1318 cumulative participants were identified. Meta-analyses using robust variance estimation showed small stretch-mediated maximal strength increases (d = 0.30 p < 0.001) with stretching duration and intervention time as significant moderators. Including all studies, stretching induced small magnitude, but significant hypertrophy effects (d = 0.20). Longer stretching durations and intervention periods as well as higher training frequencies revealed small (d = 0.26-0.28), but significant effects (p < 0.001-0.005), while lower dosage did not reach the level of significance (p = 0.13-0.39). CONCLUSIONS While of minor effectiveness, chronic static stretching represents a possible alternative to resistance training when aiming to improve strength and increase muscle size. As a dose-response relationship may exist, higher stretch durations and frequencies as well as long program durations should be further elaborated.

Abstract
This study investigated the synergistic difference in the effect of stretching on electromechanical delay (EMD) and its components, using a simultaneous recording of electromyographic, mechanomyographic, and force signals. Twenty-six healthy men underwent plantar flexors passive stretching. Before and after stretching, the electrochemical and mechanical components of the EMD and the relaxation EMD (R-EMD) were calculated in gastrocnemius medialis (GM), lateralis (GL) and soleus (SOL) during a supramaximal motor point stimulation. Additionally, joint passive stiffness was assessed. At baseline, the mechanical components of EMD and R-EMD were longer in GM and GL than SOL (Cohen's d from 1.78 to 3.67). Stretching decreased joint passive stiffness [-22(8)%, d = -1.96] while overall lengthened the electrochemical and mechanical EMD. The mechanical R-EMD components were affected more in GM [21(2)%] and GL [22(2)%] than SOL [12(1)%], with d ranging from 0.63 to 1.81. Negative correlations between joint passive stiffness with EMD and R-EMD mechanical components were found before and after stretching in all muscles (r from -0.477 to -0.926; P from 0.007 to <0.001). These results suggest that stretching plantar flexors affected GM and GL more than SOL. Future research should calculate EMD and R-EMD to further investigate the mechanical adaptations induced by passive stretching in synergistic muscles.

Abstract
PURPOSE Non-muscular tissue stiffness is assumed to have a negative impact on joint flexibility, and a reduction in non-muscular tissue stiffness may be important, especially in older adults. The present study aimed to compare the acute effects of static stretching on non-muscular tissue stiffness between older and young adults and to investigate whether a decrease in tissue stiffness improves joint flexibility. METHODS Twenty older (62-83 years) and 20 young (21-24 years) males participated. Ankle dorsiflexion static stretching (five sets of 90 s each) was performed, and before and after stretching, the ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (RoM), passive ankle joint stiffness, and shear wave speed (SWS) (an index of stiffness) of the sciatic nerve, tibial nerve, and posterior thigh fascia were measured. RESULTS Stretching led to an increase in RoM and a decrease in passive joint stiffness in both groups (P < 0.001) with no significant between-group differences (P ≥ 0.055). The between-group difference in the effect of stretching on SWS was evident only for the sciatic nerve, and a decline in sciatic nerve SWS was only observed in the older adult group (pre-stretching: 2.5 ± 0.3 m/s; post-stretching: 2.3 ± 0.4 m/s; P = 0.027). A significant positive repeated-measures correlation was observed between the sciatic nerve SWS and passive joint stiffness (P = 0.014, rrm = 0.540). CONCLUSION The reduction in sciatic nerve stiffness by stretching was noticeable in older men and led to improved joint flexibility. These findings may provide insight into tissue adaptation by stretching and may be used to explore effective exercises for improving joint flexibility in older adults.

Abstract
Increasing muscle strength and cross-sectional area is of crucial importance to improve or maintain physical function in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and sports performance. Decreases in muscular performance are experienced in phases of reduced physical activity or immobilization. These decrements highlight the need for alternative, easily accessible training regimens for a sedentary population to improve rehabilitation and injury prevention routines. Commonly, muscle hypertrophy and strength increases are associated with resistance training, typically performed in a training facility. Mechanical tension, which is usually induced with resistance machines and devices, is known to be an important factor that stimulates the underlying signaling pathways to enhance protein synthesis. Findings from animal studies suggest an alternative means to induce mechanical tension to enhance protein synthesis, and therefore muscle hypertrophy by inducing high-volume stretching. Thus, this narrative review discusses mechanical tension-induced physiological adaptations and their impact on muscle hypertrophy and strength gains. Furthermore, research addressing stretch-induced hypertrophy is critically analyzed. Derived from animal research, the stretching literature exploring the impact of static stretching on morphological and functional adaptations was reviewed and critically discussed. No studies have investigated the underlying physiological mechanisms in humans yet, and thus the underlying mechanisms remain speculative and must be discussed in the light of animal research. However, studies that reported functional and morphological increases in humans commonly used stretching durations of > 30 min per session of the plantar flexors, indicating the importance of high stretching volume, if the aim is to increase muscle mass and maximum strength. Therefore, the practical applicability seems limited to settings without access to resistance training (e.g., in an immobilized state at the start of rehabilitation), as resistance training seems to be more time efficient. Nevertheless, further research is needed to generate evidence in different human populations (athletes, sedentary individuals, and rehabilitation patients) and to quantify stretching intensity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the current evidence regarding the use of ultrasound elastography for assessing non-invasive, non-pharmacological interventions for eliciting changes in musculoskeletal stiffness. METHODS A systematic search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases was performed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Information on measurement and intervention procedures was extracted. Bias was assessed using Cochrane Risk of Bias or Risk of Bias In Non-randomised Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tools for studies with true or quasi-experimental designs, respectively. Analyses were conducted for adequately powered subgroups based on intervention type, measurement site, and population assessed. RESULTS Twenty-one studies were included in the review. Overall risk of bias was low for true experimental studies and moderate for quasi-experimental studies. Subgroup analyses indicated a large overall effect for interventions involving manual physiotherapy and taping/splinting for reducing masseter muscle stiffness in patients with masticatory muscle disorders (g = 1.488, 95% CI = 0.320-2.655, p = 0.013). Analyses for other intervention types and patient groups were underpowered. CONCLUSION Ultrasound elastography demonstrates clinical applicability for assessing non-invasive, non-pharmacological interventions for musculoskeletal stiffness. However, the comparative efficacy of these interventions for modulating tissue stiffness remains inconclusive.

Abstract
Static stretching can increase the range of motion of a joint. Muscle-tendon unit stiffness (MTS) is potentially one of the main factors that influences the change in the range of motion after static stretching. However, to date, the effects of acute and long-term static stretching on MTS are not well understood. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effects of acute and long-term static stretching training on MTS, in young healthy participants. PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO published before January 6, 2023, were searched and finally, 17 papers were included in the meta-analysis. Main meta-analysis was performed with a random-effect model and subgroup analyses, which included comparisons of sex (male vs. mixed sex and female) and muscle (hamstrings vs. plantar flexors) were also performed. Furthermore, a meta-regression was conducted to examine the effect of total stretching duration on MTS. For acute static stretching, the result of the meta-analysis showed a moderate decrease in MTS (effect size = -0.772, Z = -2.374, 95% confidence interval = -1.409 - -0.325, p = 0.018, I2 = 79.098). For long-term static stretching, there is no significant change in MTS (effect size = -0.608, Z = -1.761, 95% CI = -1.284 - 0.069, p = 0.078, I2 = 83.061). Subgroup analyses revealed no significant differences between sex (long-term, p = 0.209) or muscle (acute, p =0.295; long-term, p = 0.427). Moreover, there was a significant relationship between total stretching duration and MTS in acute static stretching (p = 0.011, R2 = 0.28), but not in long-term stretching (p = 0.085, R2 < 0.01). Whilst MTS decreased after acute static stretching, only a tendency of a decrease was seen after long-term stretching.

Abstract
Stretch training increases the range of motion of a joint. However, to date, the mechanisms behind such a stretching effect are not well understood. An earlier meta-analysis on several studies reported no changes in the passive properties of a muscle (i.e., muscle stiffness) following long-term stretch training with various types of stretching (static, dynamic, and proprioceptive neuromuscular stretching). However, in recent years, an increasing number of papers have reported the effects of long-term static stretching on muscle stiffness. The purpose of the present study was to examine the long-term (≥2 weeks) effect of static stretching training on muscle stiffness. PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO published before December 28, 2022, were searched and 10 papers met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. By applying a mixed-effect model, subgroup analyses, which included comparisons of sex (male vs. mixed sex) and type of muscle stiffness assessment (calculated from the muscle-tendon junction vs. shear modulus), were performed. Furthermore, a meta-regression was conducted to examine the effect of total stretching duration on muscle stiffness. The result of the meta-analysis showed a moderate decrease in muscle stiffness after 3-12 weeks of static stretch training compared to a control condition (effect size = -0.749, p < 0.001, I2 = 56.245). Subgroup analyses revealed no significant differences between sex (p = 0.131) and type of muscle stiffness assessment (p = 0.813). Moreover, there was no significant relationship between total stretching duration and muscle stiffness (p = 0.881).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term stretching of human skeletal muscles increases joint range of motion through altered stretch perception and decreased resistance to stretch. There is also some evidence that stretching induces changes in muscle morphology. However, research is limited and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of static stretching training on muscle architecture (i.e., fascicle length and fascicle angle, muscle thickness and cross-sectional area) in healthy participants. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS PubMed Central, Web of Science, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus were searched. Randomized controlled trials and controlled trials without randomization were included. No restrictions on language or date of publication were applied. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane RoB2 and ROBINS-I tools. Subgroup analyses and random-effects meta-regressions were also performed using total stretching volume and intensity as covariates. Quality of evidence was determined by GRADE analysis. RESULTS From the 2946 records retrieved, 19 studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis (n = 467 participants). Risk of bias was low in 83.9% of all criteria. Confidence in cumulative evidence was high. Stretching training induces trivial increases in fascicle length at rest (SMD = 0.17; 95% CI 0.01-0.33; p = 0.042) and small increases in fascicle length during stretching (SMD = 0.39; 95% CI 0.05 to 0.74; p = 0.026). No increases were observed in fascicle angle or muscle thickness (p = 0.30 and p = 0.18, respectively). Subgroup analyses showed that fascicle length increased when high stretching volumes were used (p < 0.004), while no changes were found for low stretching volumes (p = 0.60; subgroup difference: p = 0.025). High stretching intensities induced fascicle length increases (p < 0.006), while low stretching intensities did not have an effect (p = 0.72; subgroup difference: p = 0.042). Also, high intensity stretching resulted in increased muscle thickness (p = 0.021). Meta-regression analyses showed that longitudinal fascicle growth was positively associated with stretching volume (p < 0.02) and intensity (p < 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Static stretching training increases fascicle length at rest and during stretching in healthy participants. High, but not low, stretching volumes and intensities induce longitudinal fascicle growth, while high stretching intensities result in increased muscle thickness. Abstract
The application of thermal agents via hot packs is a commonly utilized method. However, the time-course changes in the range of motion (ROM), stretch sensation, shear elastic modulus, and muscle temperature during hot pack application are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the time-course changes in these variables during a 20-minute hot pack application. Eighteen healthy young men (21.1 ± 0.2 years) participated in this study. We measured the dorsiflexion (DF) ROM, passive torque at DF ROM (an indicator of stretch tolerance), and shear elastic modulus (an indicator of muscle stiffness) of the medial gastrocnemius before and every 5 minutes during a 20-minute hot pack application. The results showed that hot pack application for ≥5 minutes significantly (p < 0.01) increased DF ROM (5 minutes: d = 0.48, 10 minutes: d = 0.59, 15 minutes: d = 0.73, 20 minutes: d = 0.88), passive torque at DF ROM (5 minutes: d = 0.71, 10 minutes: d = 0.71, 15 minutes: d = 0.82, 20 minutes: d = 0.91), and muscle temperature (5 minutes: d = 1.03, 10 minutes: d = 1.71, 15 minutes: d = 1.74, 20 minutes: d = 1.66). Additionally, the results showed that hot pack application for ≥5 minutes significantly (p < 0.05) decreased shear elastic modulus (5 minutes: d = 0.29, 10 minutes: d = 0.31, 15 minutes: d = 0.30, 20 minutes: d = 0.31). These results suggest that hot pack application for a minimum 5 minutes can increase ROM and subsequently decrease muscle stiffness.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an acute high-intensity, long-duration passive stretching session of the plantar flexor muscles, on maximal dorsiflexion (DF) angle and passive stiffness at both ankle joint and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle levels in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS 13 children [mean age: 10 years 6 months, gross motor function classification system (GMFCS): I] with unilateral CP underwent a 5 min passive stretching session at 80% of maximal DF angle. Changes in maximal DF angle, slack angle, passive ankle joint and GM muscle stiffness from PRE- to POST-intervention were determined during passive ankle mobilization performed on a dynamometer coupled with shear wave elastography measurements (i.e., ultrasound) of the GM muscle. RESULTS Maximal DF angle and maximal passive torque were increased by 6.3° (P < 0.001; + 50.4%; 95% CI 59.9, 49.9) and 4.2 Nm (P < 0.01; + 38.9%; 95% CI 47.7, 30.1), respectively. Passive ankle joint stiffness remained unchanged (P = 0.9; 0%; 95% CI 10.6, - 10.6). GM muscle shear modulus was unchanged at maximal DF angle (P = 0.1; + 34.5%; 95% CI 44.7, 24.7) and at maximal common torque (P = 0.5; - 4%; 95% CI - 3.7, - 4.3), while it was decreased at maximal common angle (P = 0.021; - 35%; 95% CI - 11.4, - 58.5). GM slack angle was shifted in a more dorsiflexed position (P = 0.02; + 20.3%; 95% CI 22.6, 18). CONCLUSION Increased maximal DF angle can be obtained in the paretic leg in children with unilateral CP after an acute bout of stretching using controlled parameters without changes in passive stiffness at joint and GM muscle levels. Abstract
PURPOSE Voluntary activation (VA) determined by interpolation-twitch technique could be affected by the characteristics of the in-series elastic components. To overcome this possible bias, a novel approach based on the mechanomyographic (MMG) signal to detect voluntary activation (VA MMG ) has been proposed. We examined the changes in VA and VA MMG after passive stretching to check the influence of neural and mechanical factors in the force output. METHODS Twenty-six healthy men underwent VA assessment using the interpolated-twitch technique before and after unilateral passive stretching of the plantarflexors (five 45-s on + 15-s off). In addition to the force signal, the MMG signal was detected on gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis, and soleus. From the force and MMG signal analysis, VA and VA MMG were calculated in the stretched and contralateral nonstretched limbs. Joint passive stiffness was also defined. RESULTS In the stretched limb, passive stretching increased dorsiflexion range (mean ± SD = +18% ± 10%, P < 0.001, ES = 1.54) but reduced joint passive stiffness (-22% ± 8%, P < 0.001, ES = -1.75), maximum voluntary contraction (-15% ± 7%, P < 0.001, ES = -0.87), VA (-7% ± 3%, P < 0.001, ES = -2.32), and VA MMG (~-5% ± 2%, P < 0.001, ES = -1.26/-1.14). In the contralateral nonstretched limb, passive stretching increased dorsiflexion range (+10% ± 6%, P < 0.001, ES = 0.80) but reduced joint passive stiffness (-3% ± 2%, P = 0.041, ES = -0.27), maximum voluntary contraction (-4% ± 3%, P = 0.035, ES = -0.24), VA (-4% ± 2%, P < 0.001, ES = -1.77), and VA MMG (~- 2% ± 1%, P < 0.05, ES = -0.54/-0.46). The stretch-induced changes in VA correlated with VA MMG ( R ranging from 0.447 to 0.583 considering all muscles) and with joint passive stiffness (stretched limb: R = 0.503; contralateral nonstretched limb: R = 0.530). CONCLUSIONS VA output is overall influenced by both neural and mechanical factors, not distinguishable using the interpolated-twitch technique. VA MMG is a complementary index to assess the changes in VA not influenced by mechanical factors and to examine synergistic muscles.

Abstract
Purpose Static stretch training (SST) with long stretching durations seems to be sufficient to increase flexibility, maximum strength (MSt) and muscle thickness (MTh). However, changes in contraction properties and effects on muscle damage remain unclear. Consequently, the objective of the study was to investigate the effects of a 6-week self-performed SST on MSt, MTh, contractile properties, flexibility, and acute response of creatine kinase (CK) 3 days after SST. Methods Forty-four participants were divided into a control (CG, n = 22) and an intervention group (IG, n = 22), who performed a daily SST for 5 min for the lower limb muscle group. While isometric MSt was measured in leg press, MTh was examined via sonography and flexibility by functional tests. Muscle stiffness and contraction time were measured by tensiomyography on the rectus femoris. Additionally, capillary blood samples were taken in the pretest and in the first 3 days after starting SST to measure CK. Results A significant increase was found for MSt (p < 0.001, η 2 = 0.195) and flexibility in all functional tests (p < 0.001, η 2 > 0.310). Scheffé post hoc test did not show significant differences between the rectus femoris muscle inter- and intragroup comparisons for MTh nor for muscle stiffness and contraction time (p > 0.05, η 2 < 0.100). Moreover, CK was not significantly different between IG and CG with p > 0.05, η 2 = 0.032. Discussion In conclusion, the increase in MSt cannot be exclusively explained by muscular hypertrophy or the increased CK-related repair mechanism after acute stretching. Rather, neuronal adaptations have to be considered. Furthermore, daily 5-min SST over 6 weeks does not seem sufficient to change muscle stiffness or contraction time. Increases in flexibility tests could be attributed to a stretch-induced change in the muscle-tendon complex.

A systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression. J Strength Cond Res 37(5): 1145-1156, 2023-The aim of this study was to review articles that performed stretching training and evaluated the effects on muscular strength. Literature search was performed using 3 databases. Studies were included if they compared the effects on strength following stretching training vs. a nontraining control group or stretching training combined with resistance training (RT) vs. an RT-only group, after at least 4 weeks of intervention. The meta-analyses were performed using a random-effect model with Hedges' g effect size (ES). A total of 35 studies ( n = 1,179 subjects) were included in this review. The interventions lasted for a mean period of 8 weeks (range, 4-24 weeks), 3-4 days per week, applying approximately 4 sets of stretching of approximately 1-minute duration. The meta-analysis for the stretching vs. nontraining control group showed a significant small effect on improving dynamic (k = 14; ES = 0.33; p = 0.007) but not isometric strength (k = 8; ES = 0.10; p = 0.377), following static stretching programs (k = 17; ES = 0.28; p = 0.006). When stretching was added to RT interventions, the main analysis indicated no significant effect (k = 17; ES = -0.15; p = 0.136); however, moderator analysis indicated that performing stretching before RT sessions has a small but negative effect (k = 7; ES = -0.43; p = 0.014); the meta-regression revealed a significant negative association with study length (β = -0.100; p = 0.004). Chronic static stretching programs increase dynamic muscular strength to a small magnitude. Performing stretching before RT and for a prolonged time (>8 weeks) can blunt the strength gains to a small-to-moderate magnitude. Performing stretching in sessions distant from RT sessions might be a strategy to not hinder strength development.

Abstract
PURPOSE Verify the acute responses of static stretching (SS) on the rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), and vastus lateralis (VL) elasticity and knee/hip range of motion (ROM). Additionally, to investigate if there are consistency among quadriceps muscle elasticity after SS. METHODS Acute effect of SS on pre-post-intervention design. Thirtheen healthy participants (both genders) proposed for a pre-post experimental design. RF, VM, and VL elasticity (strain ratio, SR) was evaluated bilaterally by ultrasound with quasi-static elastography. Higher SR values refer to more rigid tissues. A SS protocol of 3 series of 30 s was applied at right lower limb. The left lower limb was considered as control group. Also, photogrammetry evaluated the knee/hip ROM. RESULTS For SR muscle comparisons, VM was lower (less stiff) than VL and RF at pre- and post-SS. For time comparisons, no differences were observed for SR and ROM at pre- and post-SS. However, the effect size of the quadriceps SR at SS lower limb was higher than control. CONCLUSION Acute effects of SS did not change the quadriceps SR or knee/hip ROM in healthy and active subjects. Non-uniform quadriceps SR are observed (VM < VL and RF) independently of SS. Future studies should consider different protocols, muscles, and populations.

Abstract
AbstractStiffness is a fundamental property of living tissues, which may be modified by pathologies or traumatic events but also by nutritional, pharmacological and exercise interventions. This review aimed to understand if specific forms of exercise are able to determine specific forms of tissue stiffness adaptations. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases to identify manuscripts addressing adaptations of tissue stiffness as a consequence of long-term exercise. Muscular, connective, peripheral nerve and arterial stiffness were considered for the purpose of this review. Resistance training, aerobic training, plyometric training and stretching were retrieved as exercise modalities responsible for tissue stiffness adaptations. Differences were observed related to each specific modality. When exercise was applied to pathological cohorts (i.e. tendinopathy or hypertension), stiffness changed towards a physiological condition. Exercise interventions are able to determine tissue stiffness adaptations. These should be considered for specific exercise prescriptions. Future studies should concentrate on identifying the effects of exercise on the stiffness of specific tissues in a broader spectrum of pathological populations, in which a tendency for increased stiffness is observed.

Abstract
Background Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is characterized by pain and limited range of motion, caused by stiffness of the joint capsule and coracohumeral ligament. On the other hand, there have been few reports on muscle stiffness in AC. The purpose of this study was to assess muscle stiffness in patients of AC with a portable and noninvasive device, Myoton PRO. We hypothesized that muscle stiffness around shoulder joint increases in AC. Methods At first, we surveyed correlation between Myoton PRO and shear wave elastography with phantoms. Second, reproducibility and repeatability of healthy volunteers with Myoton PRO were evaluated. Finally, muscle stiffness was measured in 40 patients who were diagnosed with AC. Muscle stiffness was quantitatively measured with Myoton PRO. We compared the stiffness of the anterior deltoid (AD), pectoralis major, and latissimus dorsi (LD) in AC patients on both the affected and nonaffected sides. Results Correlation coefficient in shear wave elastography and Myoton PRO was 0.99(P = .001). Reliability of intraoperator and interoperator with Myoton PRO was 0.9 or higher. Muscle stiffness values (N/m) of the AD, pectoralis major, and LD were 355 ± 61, 252 ± 54, 207 ± 51 in the affected sides and 328 ± 50, 252 ± 41, 186 ± 37 in the nonaffected sides, and the differences were significant in the AD and LD (P = .005, P = .002, respectively). Conclusions We used Myoton PRO to evaluate muscle stiffness in AC. The AD and LD muscles of AC patients were significantly stiffer on the affected side compared to the nonaffected side.

Abstract
PURPOSE The chronic effects of unilateral foam rolling (FR) or FR with vibration (VFR) intervention on the rolling and non-rolling sides (cross-education effects) are still unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of unilateral 6-week FR or VFR intervention on ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DF ROM), muscle stiffness, and muscle strength in both rolling and non-rolling sides. METHODS Thirty healthy young men were randomly allocated into the FR (n = 15) or the VFR intervention group (n = 15). Participants performed three sets of unilateral FR or VFR interventions for 60 s of the calf muscles twice/week, for 6 weeks. DF ROM, gastrocnemius muscle stiffness, and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque were assessed in the rolling and non-rolling sides before and after the intervention. RESULTS The DF ROM increased significantly (p < 0.05) to the same extent in the FR and VFR intervention groups on both rolling (FR: d = 0.58, VFR: d = 0.63) and non-rolling (FR: d = 0.39, VFR: d = 0.50) sides. Similarly, the passive torque at DF ROM increased significantly (p < 0.05) to the same extent in the FR and VFR intervention groups on both rolling (FR: d = 0.85, VFR: d = 0.77) and non-rolling (FR: d = 0.76, VFR: d = 0.68) sides. However, there were no significant changes in muscle stiffness and MVIC after FR and VFR interventions on both the rolling and non-rolling sides. FR and VFR interventions could increase the ROM in both the rolling and non-rolling sides but could not change muscle stiffness and strength. CONCLUSIONS The results showed that it is not necessarily needed to perform VFR to increase ROM in the long term.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to explore, which muscle stiffness changes may be related to medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) and the correlation between the medial tibial periosteal thickness and lower leg muscle stiffness. METHODS This study included 63 subjects distributed into 3 groups: the symptomless group, the MTSS group, and the control group. The lower leg muscle stiffness of the tibialis anterior (TA), extensor digitorum longus (EDL), peroneus longus (PL), soleus (SOL), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), medial gastrocnemius (MG), tibialis posterior (TP), and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) in the 3 groups was obtained by two-dimensional shear wave elastography. Differences in the muscle stiffness and medial tibial periosteal thickness in the 3 groups were determined by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least significant difference tests. The relationships between the periosteal thickness and the muscle stiffness were assessed using Pearson correlations. RESULTS The shear wave velocity (SWV) of all lower leg muscles except the EDL was higher in the symptomless and MTSS groups than in the control group (TA, P = .001; PL, P = .006; SOL, P < .001; LG, P < .001; MG, P < .001; TP, P < .001; FDL, P = .013; and ANOVA). A significant difference was found in the SWV of the SOL, TP, and FDL between the control and symptomless groups (P = .041, P < .001, and P = .013, respectively). Moreover, the medial tibial periosteum was thickened after running training, and its thickness was positively correlated with muscle stiffness. CONCLUSION The medial tibia periosteal thickness is positively correlated with the lower leg muscles stiffness. Changes in SOL, TP, and FDL stiffness may be related to the occurrence of MTSS.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the cross-education effect of unilateral stretching intervention programs with two different intensities (high- vs. low-intensity) on dorsiflexion range of motion (DF ROM), muscle stiffness, and muscle architecture following a 4-week stretching intervention. Twenty-eight healthy males were randomly allocated into two groups: a high-intensity static stretching (HI-SS) intervention group (n = 14; stretch intensity 6-7 out of 10) and a low-intensity static stretching (LI-SS) intervention group (n = 14; stretch intensity 0-1 out of 10). The participants were asked to stretch their dominant leg (prefer to kick a ball) for 4 weeks (3 × week for 3 × 60 s). Before and after the intervention, the non-trained leg passive properties (DF ROM, passive torque, and muscle stiffness) of the plantar flexors and the muscle architecture of the gastrocnemius medialis (muscle thickness, pennation angle, and fascicle length) were measured. Non-trained DF ROM and passive torque at DF ROM were significantly increased in the HI-SS group (p < 0.01, d = 0.64, 50.6%, and p = 0.044, d = 0.36, 18.2%, respectively), but not in the LI-SS group. Moreover, there were no significant changes in muscle stiffness and muscle architecture in both groups. For rehabilitation settings, a high-intensity SS intervention is required to increase the DF ROM of the non-trained limb. However, the increases in DF ROM seem to be related to changes in stretch tolerance and not to changes in muscle architecture or muscle stiffness.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare two static stretching (SS) training programs at high-intensity (HI-SS) and low-intensity (LI-SS) on passive and active properties of the plantar flexor muscles. Forty healthy young men were randomly allocated into three groups: HI-SS intervention group (n = 14), LI-SS intervention group (n = 13), and non-intervention control group (n = 13). An 11-point numerical scale (0–10; none to very painful stretching) was used to determine SS intensity. HI-SS and LI-SS stretched at 6–7 and 0–1 intensities, respectively, both in 3 sets of 60 s, 3×/week, for 4 weeks. Dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), gastrocnemius muscle stiffness, muscle strength, drop jump height, and muscle architecture were assessed before and after SS training program. The HI-SS group improved more than LI-SS in ROM (40 vs. 15%) and decreased muscle stiffness (−57 vs. −24%), while no significant change was observed for muscle strength, drop jump height, and muscle architecture in both groups. The control group presented no significant change in any variable. Performing HI-SS is more effective than LI-SS for increasing ROM and decreasing muscle stiffness of plantar flexor muscles following a 4-week training period in young men. However, SS may not increase muscle strength or hypertrophy, regardless of the stretching discomfort intensity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The effects of a long-term static stretching program on physical performance parameters have not been elucidated completely, although the effects on muscle flexibility have a consensus. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a long-term static stretching program on physical performance and muscle properties. METHODS: Participants performed a 2-min static stretching for the ankle joint 5 times per week for 4 weeks. Physical performance and muscle properties was measured before and after the static stretching program. RESULTS: Results showed that range of motion (ROM), dynamic postural stability, and muscle hardness were positively changed, whereas other variables i.e. maximal isometric plantar flexion moment, jump heights, muscle-tendon junction displacement and its angle, were not. CONCLUSIONS: Four-week of SS program may improve ROM, dynamic postural stability, and muscle hardness without decreasing physical performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relevance of the mechanical properties of muscles in relation to Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) remains unclear. The present study aimed to examine rectus femoris (RF) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle stiffness in children with OSD. METHODS A total of 28 legs affected by OSD and 26 legs without OSD were assessed. The shear-wave velocity (SWV) of the RF and VL (in m/s) during passive knee flexion (0° (i.e., fully extended position), 45°, and 90° knee joint flexion) and isometric contraction (50% of maximal voluntary contraction) was measured using shear-wave elastography. RESULTS The SWV of the RF was higher in subjects with OSD than in those without OSD at 45° and 90° flexion (P = 0.033 and P = 0.035, respectively); however, the SWV of the RF did not significantly differ at 0° flexion (P = 0.469). Similarly, the SWV of the VL exhibited no significant difference between the tested groups (P > 0.05). No significant difference in the SWV of both muscles during isometric contraction was observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that a stiffer RF under stretched conditions (45° and 90° flexion) is related to the presence of OSD. Furthermore, both muscles under unstretched and contracted conditions and the VL under stretched conditions have limited association with the presence of OSD. These results have important implications for understanding the association between the mechanical properties of muscles and OSD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study examined the effects of 24 wk of daily static stretching of the plantarflexors (unilateral 4 × 60-s stretching, whereas the contralateral leg served as a control; n = 26) on joint range of motion (ROM), muscle-tendon unit morphological and mechanical properties, neural activation, and contractile function. METHODS Torque-angle/velocity was obtained in passive and active conditions using isokinetic dynamometry, whereas muscle-tendon morphology and mechanical properties were examined using ultrasonography. RESULTS After the intervention, ROM increased (stretching, +11° ± 7°; control, 4° ± 8°), and passive torque (stretching, -10 ± 11 N·m; control, -7 ± 10 N·m) and normalized EMG amplitude (stretching, -3% ± 6%; control, -3% ± 4%) at a standardized dorsiflexion angle decreased. Increases were seen in passive tendon elongation at a standardized force (stretching, +1.3 ± 1.6 mm; control, +1.4 ± 2.1 mm) and in maximal passive muscle and tendon elongation. Angle of peak torque shifted toward dorsiflexion. No changes were seen in tendon stiffness, resting tendon length, or gastrocnemius medialis fascicle length. Conformable changes in ROM, passive dorsiflexion variables, tendon elongation, and angle of peak torque were observed in the nonstretched leg. CONCLUSIONS The present findings indicate that habitual stretching increases ROM and decreases passive torque, altering muscle-tendon behavior with the potential to modify contractile function.

Abstract
Background Improvements in ultrasound diagnostic equipment and techniques can enable muscle stiffness to be measured quantitatively as muscle elasticity using ultrasound shear wave elastography (USWE), where high muscle elasticity values represent muscle stiffness. Purpose To use USWE to analyze the sequential changes in muscle elasticity in the posterior shoulder before and after pitching. Study Design Descriptive laboratory study. Methods The authors evaluated 14 baseball players who had played in high school or college at an intermediate level. The elasticity of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus (ISP), middle trapezius, lower trapezius (LT), rhomboideus, and serratus anterior muscles of the throwing shoulder was measured using USWE at 3 time points: before, immediately after, and 24 hours after a throwing session of 100 pitches. The authors analyzed the sequential changes in the mean elasticity values of the respective muscles at the 3 time points. Results The mean elasticity values before, immediately after, and 24 hours after throwing were as follows: supraspinatus: 32.9, 53.4, 43.8 kPa; ISP: 22.7, 44.8, 43.7 kPa; middle trapezius: 45.1, 70.3, 59.9 kPa; LT: 32.8, 45.5, 46.5 kPa; rhomboideus: 29.1, 47.5, 38.8 kPa; and serratus anterior: 19.2, 36.9, 26.5 kPa, respectively. The mean elasticity values for all tested muscles were significantly higher immediately after throwing compared with before throwing (P ≤ .0086 for all), and elasticity values in the ISP and LT remained significantly higher 24 hours after throwing compared with before throwing (P ≤ .019 for both). Conclusion The study results indicated that pitching significantly increased ISP and LT muscle elasticity even after 24 hours.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of high-volume static stretching training on gastrocnemius muscle architecture, ankle angle and jump height in 21 female adolescent volleyball players. Static stretching of the plantar flexors of one leg (STR) was performed five times/week for 12 weeks, in addition to volleyball training, with the contra-lateral leg used as control (CON). Total duration of stretching per session increased from 540 s (week 1) to 900 s (week 12). At baseline, week 12 and after 3 weeks of detraining, muscle architecture at the middle and the distal part of both gastrocnemius heads (medialis and lateralis) and ankle angle were examined at rest and at maximum dorsiflexion. At the same time-points gastrocnemius cross-sectional area (CSA) was also assessed, while jumping height was measured at baseline and week 12. Following intervention, ankle dorsiflexion increased in both legs with a greater increase in STR than CON (22 ± 20% vs. 8 ± 17%, p < 0.001). Fascicle length at the middle part of gastrocnemius medialis increased only in the STR, at rest (6 ± 7%, p = 0.006) and at maximum dorsiflexion (11 ± 7%, p < 0.001). Fascicle length at maximum dorsiflexion also increased at the distal part of gastrocnemius lateralis of STR (15 ± 13%, p < 0.001). A greater increase in CSA (23 ± 14% vs. 13 ± 14%, p < 0.001) and in one-leg jumping height (27 ± 30% vs. 17 ± 23%, p < 0.001) was found in STR than CON. Changes in ankle angle, fascicle length and CSA were maintained following detraining. High-volume stretching training for 12 weeks results in ankle dorsiflexion, fascicle length and muscle cross sectional area increases in adolescent female volleyball players. These adaptations may partly explain improvements in jump performance.

J Strength Cond Res 35(7): 1924-1929, 2021-This study investigated the effects of a 4-week static stretching (SS) program on isokinetic and isometric knee flexor peak torque and angle of peak torque. Thirty healthy men (age, 22.7 ± 2.2 years) were randomized to receive either of the following: (a) a 4-week stretch intervention for the hamstrings (SS intervention group; n = 15) or (b) no intervention (control group; n = 15). The maximum pain-free knee angle, passive stiffness, which was determined by a slope of torque-angle curve, isometric and isokinetic (at 60°·s-1 and 180°·s-1) peak torque, and angle of peak torque for knee flexors were measured before and after 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, passive stiffness decreased significantly in the intervention group. There were no significant changes in isometric and isokinetic (neither at 60°·s-1 nor at 180°·s-1) peak torque, or angle of peak torque at 180°·s-1. A significantly increased peak extension angle at 60°·s-1 was observed in the intervention group. These results suggest that SS intervention is effective for decreasing musculotendinous unit stiffness of the hamstrings and that an SS program influences the angle of peak torque, whereas no significant changes occur in peak torque. Because a previous study suggests that angle of peak torque is associated with hamstring strain injuries, the results of this study would be helpful when considering the training program for preventing or treating hamstring strain injuries.

Abstract
A stretching intervention program is performed to maintain and improve range of motion (ROM) in sports and rehabilitation settings. However, there is no consensus on the effects of stretching programs on muscle stiffness, likely due to short stretching durations used in each session. Therefore, a longer stretching exercise session may be required to decrease muscle stiffness in the long-term. Moreover, until now, the retention effect (detraining) of such an intervention program is not clear yet. The purpose of this study was to investigate the training (5-week) and detraining effects (5-week) of a high-volume stretching intervention on ankle dorsiflexion ROM (DF ROM) and medial gastrocnemius muscle stiffness. Fifteen males participated in this study and the plantarflexors of the dominant limb were evaluated. Static stretching intervention was performed using a stretching board for 1,800 s at 2 days per week for 5 weeks. DF ROM was assessed, and muscle stiffness was calculated from passive torque and muscle elongation during passive dorsiflexion test. The results showed significant changes in DF ROM and muscle stiffness after the stretching intervention program, but the values returned to baseline after the detraining period. Our results indicate that high-volume stretching intervention (3,600 s per week) may be beneficial for DF ROM and muscle stiffness, but the training effects are dismissed after a detraining period with the same duration of the intervention.

Abstract
PURPOSE Static stretching (SS) is performed in various settings, but there is no consensus about the effects of SS programmes on changes in muscle morphofunction. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a high-volume SS programme on muscle strength and architecture. METHODS Sixteen healthy young male adults participated, and the dominant leg was defined as the intervention side, with the non-dominant leg as the control side. Stretching exercises were performed two times per week (6 sets of 5 min, totally 30 min per session,) for 5-week using a stretching board under the supervision of the research team. Before and after SS intervention programme, plantar-flexor strength (maximum voluntary isometric contraction, MVC-ISO; maximum voluntary concentric contraction, MVC-CON) and architecture (muscle thickness, pennation angle, and fascicle length) were measured via dynamometer and ultrasound, respectively. RESULTS Following the SS-training programme, significant increases were observed for stretching side in MVIC-ISO at neutral ankle position (p = 0.02, d = 0.31, Δ = 6.4 ± 9.9%) and MVC-CON at 120°/s (p = 0.02, d = 0.30, Δ = 7.8 ± 9.1%), with no significant change on the control side. There was no significant change in any measure of muscle architecture for both intervention and control sides. CONCLUSION Five-week high-volume SS induced positive changes on some measures of muscle strength but not hypertrophy of plantar-flexor muscles. Even with a volume much greater than already tested, the low strain offered by the SS per set seems be insufficient to induce architectural changes on skeletal muscle.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to study sonoelastographic features of thesartorius muscle, and its relation to the demographic factors.The study included 70 muscles in 35 healthy subjects. High-resolution ultrasound and shearwave elastography were used to evaluate the sartorius muscle. Stiffness values were measured.The mean shear elastic modulus of the sartorius muscle was 21.96 ± 5.1 kPa. Demographic factors showed no relation to the elastic modulus of the left sartorius muscle. Positive statistical correlation was noted between the elastic modulus of the right sartorius muscle, weight, and body mass index.Our results could be a reference point for evaluating sartorius muscle stiffness in future research considering different pathologies.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the effects of 12 weeks of passive static stretching training (PST) on force-generating capacity, passive stiffness, muscle architecture of plantarflexor muscles. METHODS Thirty healthy adults participated in the study. Fifteen participants (STR, 6 women, 9 men) underwent 12-week plantarflexor muscles PST [(5 × 45 s-on/15 s-off) × 2exercises] × 5times/week (duration: 2250 s/week), while 15 participants (CTRL, 6 women, 9 men) served as control (no PST). Range of motion (ROM), maximum passive resistive torque (PRTmax), triceps surae architecture [fascicle length, fascicle angle, and thickness], passive stiffness [muscle-tendon complex (MTC) and muscle stiffness], and plantarflexors maximun force-generating capacity variables (maximum voluntary contraction, maximum muscle activation, rate of torque development, electromechanical delay) were calculated Pre, at the 6th (Wk6), and the 12th week (Wk12) of the protocol in both groups. RESULTS Compared to Pre, STR ROM increased (P < 0.05) at Wk6 (8%) and Wk12 (23%). PRTmax increased at Wk12 (30%, P < 0.05), while MTC stiffness decreased (16%, P < 0.05). Muscle stiffness decreased (P < 0.05) at Wk6 (11%) and Wk12 (16%). No changes in triceps surae architecture and plantarflexors maximum force-generating capacity variables were found in STR (P > 0.05). Percentage changes in ROM correlated with percentage changes in PRTmax (ρ = 0.62, P = 0.01) and MTC stiffness (ρ = - 0.78, P = 0.001). In CTRL, no changes (P > 0.05) occurred in any variables at any time point. CONCLUSION The expected long-term PST-induced changes in ROM were associated with modifications in the whole passive mechanical properties of the ankle joint, while maximum force-generating capacity characteristics were preserved. 12 weeks of PST do not seem a sufficient stimulus to induce triceps surae architectural changes.

Abstract
Prolonged computer work and smartphone use can cause stiffness of the neck and shoulder muscles, including the trapezius muscle. Hence, muscle hardness quantification is clinically beneficial. The present study aimed to examine the reliability of trapezius muscle hardness measurement using a portable muscle hardness meter and ultrasound strain elastography. Overall, 20 healthy young men participated in this study. Prior to measurement, the participant’s subjective symptoms, particularly shoulder muscle stiffness, were rated using an 11-point verbal scale. Furthermore, hardness of the right and left upper trapezius muscles was assessed. In the strain elastography assessment, muscle hardness was evaluated using strain ratio. Results showed that, in quantifying upper trapezius muscle hardness, both portable muscle hardness meter and strain elastography had an excellent intra-tester reliability (>0.9). However, the correlation coefficients between muscle hardness values assessed using a muscle hardness meter and those evaluated with strain elastography did not significantly differ, and the scores for subjective shoulder stiffness did not correspond to muscle hardness values. Therefore, the hardness of the trapezius muscle does not directly reflect the subjective shoulder stiffness. Future studies should thoroughly examine the location of the shoulder stiffness, and check whether it is accompanied by local pain or tenderness.

Abstract
Shear wave velocity is commonly assessed to infer the muscular origins of changes in joint stiffness, but the exact relationship between shear wave velocity changes in muscle and joint stiffness changes remains unknown. Here, we systematically evaluated and quantified this relationship in the plantar flexors. Our results provide evidence for the ability of shear wave velocity to elucidate the muscular origins of joint stiffness changes.

Abstract
Tissue-directed stretching interventions can preferentially load muscular or nonmuscular structures such as peripheral nerves. How these tissues adapt mechanically to long-term stretching is poorly understood. This randomized, single-blind, controlled study used ultrasonography and dynamometry to compare the effects of 12-wk nerve-directed and muscle-directed stretching programs versus control on maximal ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) and passive torque, shear wave velocity (SWV; an index of stiffness), and architecture of triceps surae and sciatic nerve. Sixty healthy adults were randomized to receive nerve-directed stretching, muscle-directed stretching, or no intervention (control). The muscle-directed protocol was designed to primarily stretch the plantar flexor muscle group, whereas the nerve-directed intervention targeted the sciatic nerve tract. Compared with the control group [mean; 95% confidence interval (CI)], muscle-directed intervention showed increased ROM (+7.3°; 95% CI: 4.1-10.5), decreased SWV of triceps surae (varied from -0.8 to -2.3 m/s across muscles), decreased passive torque (-6.8 N·m; 95% CI: -11.9 to -1.7), and greater gastrocnemius medialis fascicle length (+0.4 cm; 95% CI: 0.1-0.8). Muscle-directed intervention did not affect the SWV and size of sciatic nerve. Participants in the nerve-directed group showed a significant increase in ROM (+9.9°; 95% CI: 6.2-13.6) and a significant decrease in sciatic nerve SWV (> -1.8 m/s across nerve regions) compared with the control group. Nerve-directed intervention had no effect on the main outcomes at muscle and joint levels. These findings provide new insights into the long-term mechanical effects of stretching interventions and have relevance to clinical conditions where change in mechanical properties has occurred.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study demonstrates that the mechanical properties of plantar flexor muscles and sciatic nerve can adapt mechanically to long-term stretching programs. Although interventions targeting muscular or nonmuscular structures are both effective at increasing maximal range of motion, the changes in tissue mechanical properties (stiffness) are specific to the structure being preferentially stretched by each program. We provide the first in vivo evidence that stiffness of peripheral nerves adapts to long-term loading stimuli using appropriate nerve-directed stretching.

Abstract
In recent years, imaging has played an increasing role in the clinical management of patients with rheumatic diseases with respect to aiding diagnosis, guiding therapy and monitoring disease progression. These roles have been underpinned by research which has enhanced our understanding of disease pathogenesis and pathophysiology of rheumatology conditions, in addition to their key role in outcome measurement in clinical trials. However, compared to joints, imaging research of muscles is less established, despite the fact that muscle symptoms are very common and debilitating in many rheumatic diseases. Recently, it has been shown that even though patients with rheumatoid arthritis may achieve clinical remission, defined by asymptomatic joints, many remain affected by lingering constitutional systemic symptoms like fatigue, tiredness, weakness and myalgia, which may be attributed to changes in the muscles. Recent improvements in imaging technology, coupled with an increasing clinical interest, has started to ignite new interest in the area. This perspective discusses the rationale for using imaging, particularly ultrasound and MRI, for investigating muscle pathology involved in common inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The muscles associated with rheumatic diseases can be affected in many ways, including myositis-an inflammatory muscle condition, and myopathy secondary to medications, such as glucocorticoids. In addition to non-invasive visual assessment of muscles in these conditions, novel imaging techniques like shear wave elastography and quantitative MRI can provide further useful information regarding the physiological and biomechanical status of the muscle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Muscle hardness causes lower activity in athletic practice or sport competition. Increase in muscle hardness often cause injury and muscle fatigue. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect on muscle hardness of acupuncture stimulation using low-reactive level laser therapy (LLLT) and silver spike point (SSP) therapy, along with stimulation by stretching. MATERIALS SUBJECTS AND METHODS Muscle fatigue was created experimentally, and the effect of LLLT was examined with the indices of muscle hardness and the pennation angle, using ultrasound diagnostic equipment with real-time tissue elastography (RTE) functionality. RESULTS As a result, a combined use of stretching and SSP therapy was effective on muscle hardness, while LLLT alone had no immediate lowering of muscle hardness. In addition, only the laser stretching group demonstrated a significant decrease in the pennation angle. CONCLUSIONS This is because an improved local blood flow due to SSP therapy is considered to have relaxed muscle tonus, which boosted metabolism and removed algogenic substances. This became more effective through a combined use of stretching and low-power laser irradiation. Moreover, it was suggested that stimulation of the acupuncture points in the crus could have a further effect on muscle hardness and the pennation angle.

Abstract
Introduction Static stretching (SS) program are widely used in clinical and athletic settings. Many previous studies investigate the effect of SS program on muscle strength and muscle architecture (muscle thickness, and pennation angleh). However, no consensus has been reached about the effect of SS programs on muscle strength and muscle architecture. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 6-week SS programs performed at different weekly frequencies on muscle strength, muscle thickness and pennation angle at different ankle joint positions. Methods A total of 24 healthy male volunteers were performed 6-week SS programs (2,160 s of SS: 360 s/week*6 weeks) and were randomized to a group that performed SS once a week, or a group that performed SS three times per week. Total time under stretching was equated between groups. The muscle strength (maximum voluntary isometric contraction) at three different ankle joints were assessed before and after the 6-week SS program. In addition, muscle thickness and pennation angle were assessed by ultrasonography before and after 6-week SS program. Results There were no significant changes in all variables before and after the 6-week SS program, regardless of weekly frequency (p > 0.05). Conclusions Our results suggest that 6-week SS programs do not increase muscle strength or muscle architecture at different ankle joint positions, regardless of stretching frequency; however, no negative effect on these outcomes was observed, contrary to evidence on the immediate, detrimental effects of SS.

Abstract
Introduction Static stretching (SS) is commonly performed as part of warm-up routine. However, only few previous studies have reported on the effects of short-duration SS, which is often used in the sports field. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute and prolonged effects of 20-s SS on isokinetic contraction muscle strength, range of motion (ROM), and the shear elastic modulus. Method Twenty male volunteers participated in this study. The ROM and both concentric and eccentric contraction muscle strengths were measured using a dynamometer. In addition, the shear elastic modulus of medial gastrocnemius muscle in dominant leg was measured by ultrasonic shear wave elastography. The participants visited the laboratory on four occasions each separated by >3 days. The first visit was a familiarization trial, and the subsequent three visits included the following experimental conditions in a random order. All measurements were performed prior to and immediately after SS or 5 min and 10 min after 20-s SS. Results The results of this study showed that the ROM was significantly increased SS intervention in all conditions compared with prior to SS intervention. In addition, ROM was significantly higher post SS and 5 min after SS than 10 min after SS. However, there were no significant interaction effects for isokinetic contraction muscle strength and the shear elastic modulus Conclusion In the sports field, from the point of performance, a 20-s SS intervention could be a useful technique before exercise because it increases ROM and does not decrease maximum torque.

Abstract
Whether static stretching (SS) frequency has an effect on increasing the range of motion (ROM) and decreasing muscle stiffness remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of two 6-week SS programs performed with different frequencies but generally the same duration of stretching on the passive properties of the medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit. The study participants comprised 24 male volunteers randomly assigned to either the one-time/week group or the three-times/week group, performing 6 min of SS once per week and 2 min of SS thrice per week, respectively. The dorsiflexion ROM (DF ROM) and muscle stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius during passive ankle dorsiflexion were assessed using a dynamometer and ultrasonography before and after 6 weeks of SS programs. The results show that the DF ROM was increased and muscle stiffness was decreased significantly in the three-times/week group (P < 0.01 and P < 0.01, respectively), whereas no significant changes were observed in DF ROM and muscle stiffness in the one-time per week group (P = 0.25 and P = 0.32, respectively). These results suggest that a high-frequency SS program is more effective than a low-frequency SS program in increasing ROM and decreasing muscle stiffness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The short-term effect of cyclic stretching (CS) has been found to decrease muscle hardness and improve physical performance. However, the long-term effect of CS program was unclear. This study investigated the long-term effect of CS program on muscle properties and physical performance. METHODS Eighteen healthy men participated in this study. The participants were assigned randomly to either the CS or control group (9 participants in each group) to conduct 2 min CS of the plantar flexor muscles 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Before and after intervention, the gastrocnemius medialis muscle hardness, muscle-tendon joint (MTJ) angle, and MTJ displacement (ΔMTJ) were measured as indices of muscle properties. In addition, the maximum range of motion of ankle dorsiflexion (ROM max), normalized maximum peak torque of plantar flexor (NPT), vertical jump height, and dynamic postural stability, dynamic postural stability index (DPSI) were measured as indices of physical performance. RESULTS The CS program was found to significantly decrease muscle hardness and increase vertical jump height and ROM max, but not to change the MTJ angle, ΔMTJ, NPT, and DPSI. CONCLUSIONS The results of our study suggested that long-term CS program was effective in decreasing muscle hardness and increasing vertical jump height.

Abstract
CONTEXT In clinical and sports settings, static stretching (SS) is usually performed to increase range of motion (ROM) and decrease passive muscle stiffness. Recently, the shear elastic modulus was measured by ultrasonic shear wave elastography as an index of muscle stiffness. Previous studies reported that the shear elastic modulus measured by ultrasound shear wave elastography decreased after SS, and the effects of SS on shear elastic modulus were likely affected by rest duration between sets of SS. OBJECTIVE To investigate the acute effects of SS with different rest durations on ROM and shear elastic modulus of gastrocnemius and to clarify whether the rest duration between sets of SS decreases the shear elastic modulus. DESIGN A randomized, repeated-measures experimental design. SETTING University laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Sixteen healthy males volunteered to participate in the study (age 21.3 [0.8] y; height 171.8 [5.1] cm; weight 63.1 [4.5] kg). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Each participant underwent 3 different rest interval durations during SS (ie, long rest duration: 90 s; normal rest duration: 30 s; and short rest duration: 10 s). This SS technique was repeated 10 times, thus lasting a total of 300 seconds with different rest durations in each protocol. The dorsiflexion ROM and shear elastic modulus were measured before and after SS. RESULTS Our results revealed that dorsiflexion ROM and shear elastic modulus were changed after 300-second SS; however, no effects of the rest duration between sets of SS were observed. CONCLUSIONS In terms of decreasing the shear elastic modulus, clinicians and coaches should not focus on the rest duration when SS intervention is performed.

Abstract
The goal of the study was to investigate the quantitative impact of region of interest (ROI), software choice, muscle fiber orientation and preload tension on shear wave velocity (SWV). First, SWV was assessed in an isotropic elasticity phantom and ex vivo porcine muscle using a commercially available clinical ultrasound system. Secondly, SWV was acquired in relaxed and stretched calf muscles of healthy volunteers (dorsal extension of the talocrural joint), for both parallel and transverse probe direction to the fibers, as well as for different ROIs and software versions. The effect of intermediate probe-fiber alignments was also analyzed. Finally, the impact of confounding factors on SWV reproducibility was minimized with a second force-controlled volunteer study, in which the calf was isometrically loaded, and fiber orientation and ROI were well-defined. 2046 in vivoSWE images were acquired to analyze SWV reproducibility with different confounder settings. In healthy volunteers, the main variance-contributing factors were in order of importance muscle tension, fiber orientation, horizontal ROI size and insertion depth. Regression analysis showed significantly reduced SWV with increasing insertion depth for each study material. Parallel probe-fiber orientation, muscle stretch and increasing horizontal ROI size led to significantly higher SWV. Based on the results of the study, we provide recommendations to minimize the impact of confounders in musculoskeletal elastography and discuss the main confounding mechanisms and trade-offs between confounding variables. Coefficients of variation can be significantly reduced with a controlled protocol, if the confounders are clinically taken into account.

Abstract
Shear-wave electrography (SWE) is a method used to assess tissue elasticity. Recently, it has been used to assess muscle stiffness, but the reliability of SWE for this purpose has not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repeatability and reproducibility of SWE on porcine meat specimens and the human biceps femoris muscle. Measurements on meat specimens (n = 20) were performed by three raters and with a custom-built device that allowed constant application force. Measurements on human participants (n = 20) were performed by two raters in relaxed and stretched muscle positions on two visits. Most aspects of repeatability and reproducibility were good or high, with intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) values above 0.70. Minimal detectable changes were lower in a relaxed (6–10%) than stretched (15-16%) muscle position. In conclusion, SWE is a reliable tool for assessing muscle stiffness if the muscle is examined in relaxed condition, while changing the force applied with the probe for as little as 1.5 N results in significantly lower repeatability.

Abstract
We aimed to examine the relationship among the muscle shear modulus at rest, maximal joint torque, and rate of torque development (RTD). Twenty-seven participants (28 ± 5 years, 13 women) were recruited in the study. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle belly and shear modulus at an ankle joint angle of 0° were calculated using magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound shear wave elastography, respectively. Subsequently, participants performed maximal isometric plantar flexion at 0° ankle joint angle [maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) test] as fast and hard as possible (RTD test). RTD was calculated from the time-torque curve over time intervals of 0-30, 0-50, 0-100, 0-150, and 0-200 ms from the onset of plantar flexion during the RTD test and was normalized by MVC torque to exclude muscle strength. MG CSA correlated significantly with MVC torque (r = 0.572), whereas MG shear modulus did not. In contrast, MG shear modulus correlated significantly with normalized RTD at all time intervals (r = 0.460-0.496). These results suggest that passive muscle stiffness is not associated with muscle force; however, higher passive muscle stiffness at a given joint angle may contribute to rapid force production.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of 6 weeks of a constant-angle hamstring muscle flexibility training on muscle-tendon stiffness and the range of motion (ROM) in young men with limited hamstring ROM. METHODS 13 participants performed unilateral stretching training (EL), while the contralateral limb acted as control (CL). ROM, relative and peak passive torque, passive stiffness, dynamic knee flexion strength, and active optimum joint angle were assessed before and after the last training session. In addition, participants were tested during the first and last training sessions for first stretch sensation during the stretching procedure only in the EL. RESULTS Straight-leg raise and isokinetic knee ROM tests (both p < 0.0001; from 59.4 ± 8.1 to 70.3 ± 9.8, from 28.3 ± 7.6 to 18.5 ± 5.2, respectively) and peak passive torque (p = 0.001; from 53.1 ± 11.7 to 64.9 ± 12.3) increased only in EL and no changes in relative passive torque, passive stiffness, dynamic knee flexion strength, and active optimum joint angle (p > 0.05) were observed. At the point of first stretch sensation, significant increases in passive torque (p = 0.004) and angle (p < 0.001) were found from pre- to post-training. CONCLUSION The flexibility training induced significant increases in ROM alongside increases in peak passive torque (stretch tolerance) and the ROM at which stretch was first perceived. However, this occurred without changes in muscle-tendon mechanical properties or transfer to the untrained limb (CL). These results suggest that limb-specific ROM increases were underpinned by neural adaptations.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of static stretching (SS) with different rest intervals on muscle stiffness. Fifteen healthy males participated in the study. Four bouts of thirty-second SS for the gastrocnemii were performed at the maximal dorsiflexion using dynamometer with two different rest intervals between stretches, namely 0 s (R0) and 30 s (R30). Each participant underwent both stretching protocols at least 48 h apart in a random order. Between each bout of SS, the ankle was moved to 20°-plantar-flexion in 3 s, held for each rest interval time, and then returned to the stretching position in 3 s. The shear elastic modulus of the medial gastrocnemius was measured before (PRE) and immediately after (POST) four bouts of SS to assess muscle stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (protocol × time) indicated a significant interaction effect on the shear elastic modulus. The shear elastic modulus significantly decreased after SS in both protocols [R0, PRE: 11.5 ± 3.3 kPa, POST: 10.0 ± 2.6 kPa, amount of change: 1.6 ± 0.9 kPa (13.0 ± 5.2%); R30, PRE: 11.0 ± 2.8 kPa, POST: 10.2 ± 2.1 kPa, amount of change: 0.8 ± 1.3 kPa (6.0 ± 10.4%)]. Furthermore, the SS with 0-s rest interval induced greater decrease in shear elastic modulus when compared to SS with 30-s rest interval (p = 0.023). Thus, when performing SS to decrease muscle stiffness, rest intervals between stretches should be minimized.

Abstract
Habitual loading and resistance training (RT) can lead to changes in muscle and tendon morphology as well as in its mechanical properties which can be measured by Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) technique. The objective of this study was to analyze the Vastus Lateralis (VL) and patellar tendon (PT) mechanical properties adaptations to an 8-week RT protocol using SWE. We submitted 15 untrained health young men to an 8-week RT directed for knee extensor mechanism. VL and PT shear modulus (μ) were assessed pre and post intervention with SWE. PT thickness (PTT), VL muscle thickness (VL MT) and knee extension torque (KT) were also measure pre and post intervention to ensure the RT efficiency. Significant increases were observed in VL MT and KT (pre = 2.40 ± 0.40 cm and post = 2.63 ± 0.35 cm, p = 0.0111, and pre = 294.66 ± 73.98 Nm and post = 338.93 ± 76.39 Nm, p = 0.005, respectively). The 8-week RT was also effective in promoting VL μ adaptations (pre = 4.87 ± 1.38 kPa and post = 9.08.12 ± 1.86 kPa, p = 0.0105), but not in significantly affecting PT μ (pre = 78.85 ± 7.37 kPa and post = 66.41 ± 7.25 kPa, p = 0.1287) nor PTT (baseline = 0.364 ± 0.053 cm and post = 0.368 ± 0.046 cm, p = 0.71). The present study showed that an 8-week resistance training protocol was effective in adapting VL μ but not PT μ. Further investigation should be conducted with special attention to longer interventions, to possible PT differential individual responsiveness and to the muscle-tendon resting state tension environment.
