Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional profiles and guidelines are determined by various associations to ensure optimum health of cats and provide pet food manufacturers nutritional recommendations to ensure the well-balanced and nutritionally adequate pet food. OBJECTIVES It was aimed to determine some trace elements and macro minerals in prescription and non-prescription dry cat foods and compare the contents with the suggested guidelines to evaluate the potential in-compliance. METHODS A total of 96 dry cat foods were evaluated. Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn, Mg, Ca and P concentrations were analysed in prescription dry cat foods developed for gastrointestinal diseases-GI (n = 18), renal diseases-R (n = 15), urinary diseases-U (n = 8), obesity-O (n = 10) and non-prescription-N-P (n = 45) foods from different flavours and brands by ICP-OES. RESULTS Ten precent of the O group exceeded the upper limit, and 15.5% of the N-P group failed to provide a nutritional minimum level. 4.44% of prescription foods were below the minimum recommended Mn level according to the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), and 66% of N-P foods were below the minimum adult maintenance value recommended by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). One hundred percent non-compliance with the guidelines in the GI and U groups was recorded. 22.2% of the GI group was lower, and 5.55% of the GI group was higher than the recommended levels by FEDIAF, which reflects the 27.7% in compliance. While all the prescription foods have 100% compliance with the determined minimum level of guidelines, 11.1% of N-P foods were below the minimum recommended level. In compliance with the guidelines for Ca was noted in the O and U groups (10% and 12.5%, respectively). The P ratio in all prescription food groups except for GI was below the minimum level determined by AAFCO. CONCLUSIONS In all food groups, mean Cu, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca and P concentrations were between the minimum and maximum limits recommended by FEDIAF. However, the mean Se level was above the upper legal limit in all food groups, and the Zn level was below the minimum recommended level in the N-P food group. Besides the mean values, a high number of foods in each group show a broad in-compliance with the guidelines.

Abstract
The study aimed to compare the quality of perioperative analgesia, the motor block duration, and the effects on main cardiovascular parameters of dexmedetomidine (1 μg/kg/nerve block) or magnesium sulphate (2 mg/kg/nerve block) as adjuvants to 0.3% ropivacaine for sciatic and saphenous nerves block in dogs undergoing tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). Dogs randomly received perineural dexmedetomidine-ropivacaine (D group), magnesium sulphate-ropivacaine (M group), or ropivacaine (C group). Fentanyl was administered in case of intraoperative nociception. Postoperative pain was assessed using the Short Form-Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale (SF-GCMPS) and VAS scale. The duration of motor blockade and intra- and postoperative cardiovascular parameters were also recorded. Group M required significantly more fentanyl than D group (p = 0.04). Group M had a significantly higher SF-GCMPS score than group C at 4 (p = 0.002) and 5 h after extubation (p = 0.01), and a significantly higher VAS score than group D at 3 h after extubation (p = 0.03), and at 4 h if compared to group C (p = 0.009). No significant differences regarding the duration of motor blockade were detected between groups (p = 0.07). The heart rate was significantly lower in group D than in M and C groups intraoperatively and during the first 1.5 h post extubation. The addition of dexmedetomidine or magnesium sulphate as adjuvants to perineural ropivacaine did not improve the quality of perioperative analgesia and did not prolong the motor blockade in dogs undergoing sciatic and saphenous nerves block for TPLO surgery.

Abstract
Fluids are drugs used in veterinary patients capable of producing beneficial therapeutic or inadvertent harmful effects within the body's intravascular, interstitial, and intracellular fluid spaces. The individualized design of a fluid therapy plan requires careful patient assessment and targeted selection of proper fluid types, administration routes, and rates, along with adjustments during therapy tailored specifically as per the individual patient's fluid requirement and therapeutic response. Personalized fluid prescriptions and vigilant patient monitoring help avoid patient morbidity from body fluid deficiencies, fluid excess, and electrolyte derangements and support better patient outcomes. These guidelines provide an overview of fluid dynamics within the fluid spaces of the body, describe various types of fluids and their uses, and outline recommendations for fluid administration for resuscitation, rehydration, and maintenance purposes. The guidelines also outline approaches to fluid therapy for anesthetized patients and reiterate the recommendations of reduced fluid rates in this population of patients. Additionally, the guidelines include practical fluid therapy strategies for patients with various common disorders. The goal of these guidelines is to help veterinary professionals safely and effectively prescribe and administer fluid therapy for canine and feline patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To perform a qualitative evaluation of the analgesic effects of magnesium in domestic animals, including its anaesthetic sparing effects. STUDY DESIGN All database searches were made using PubMed and Google Scholar. Studies published after 1990, evaluating the use of magnesium and reporting information on analgesia, in dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats and sheep were selected (last search in August 2023). A reference check in the selected papers was performed to identify any study which was omitted. The CERQual (Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research) approach was used to assess confidence and analyse the evidence. RESULTS A total of 20 studies relevant to the analgesic effects of magnesium in veterinary patients and two reviews were included. All were published after 2006. Of the 20, five studies provided information about analgesia in the postoperative period in dogs with heterogenous results. Magnesium added epidurally increased the duration of the sensory block in several species. Motor block was also observed when added to spinal analgesia. Results regarding volatile agents sparing effect were conflicting. Occasional moderate adverse effects were reported in dogs, such as nausea and vomiting, when administered as a bolus in conscious animals, and hypotension when administered intraperitoneally. Collapse was reported in horses after epidural administration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE The evidence of an analgesic effect of magnesium in veterinary patients remains scarce considering the paucity and low quality of published data. Further research may be helpful to establish the efficacy and indications of magnesium in multimodal analgesia in animals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine if an association between ionized magnesium (iMg) and total magnesium (tMg) exists in healthy and hospitalized dogs admitted through an emergency service and to assess the associations between iMg and tMg with total protein, albumin, ionized calcium, and total calcium. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS Sixty-nine dogs were enrolled. The healthy control group (group 1) included 24 dogs, and the hospitalized group (group 2) included 45 dogs. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS For both groups, signalment, a venous blood gas, and serum biochemistry were obtained. In addition, the presumptive diagnosis was recorded for group 2. Blood was obtained prior to any therapeutic interventions. Group 1 tMg was within the reference interval (RI), and the values for iMg were used to provide a healthy group range (HGR) of 0.44-0.50 mmol/L. Group 2 tMg was within the RI, but iMg was below the calculated HGR range (group 2 median iMg = 0.4 mmol/L; range = 0.27-0.70). There was a significant positive correlation between iMg and tMg in each group (group 1: r = 0.6713, P = 0.0003; group 2: r = 0.5312, P = 0.0002). Ionized Mg and tMg were not significantly associated with any of the other evaluated variables in either group. CONCLUSIONS Ionized Mg and tMg were significantly associated in both healthy and hospitalized dogs, but the relationship was weaker in the hospitalized dogs compared with the healthy population. For hospitalized dogs, the relationship was weak enough to question the validity of using iMg and tMg interchangeably to track magnesium status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The determination of iCa and iMg is important in veterinary medicine, but their immediate determination in whole blood is not always possible. Their stability in other sample types and the existence of interferences must be evaluated before its use. OBJECTIVES We aimed to analyze the effects of storage time on the stability of iCa, iMg, and other analytes in whole blood, plasma, and serum samples in horses and assess the interference of heparin in these measurements. METHODS Whole blood, heparin-plasma, and serum samples from 10 horses were stored at 4°C and analyzed 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 24, 48, and 168 hours after sample collection using the Stat Profile Prime Plus Vet equipment (Nova Biomedical, Waltham, MA, USA). Results were analyzed by ANOVA or mixed-effect models. RESULTS The concentration of iCa, iMg, total calcium (tCa), total magnesium (tMg), and the ratios iCa/tCa and iMg/tMg did not differ up to 168 hours when compared to the initial time. Total Ca, iMg, and tMg were not significantly different among sample types, but iCa concentrations were slightly but significantly lower in plasma. Freezing at -20°C did not affect iCa, iMg, tCa, and tMg. The pH increased in serum and plasma after 8 hours, and a mild negative correlation existed between plasma iCa concentration and pH. A negative correlation was observed also between the ratios iCa/tCa or iMg/tMg and pH in plasma and serum. A significant decrease in iCa and iMg was detected when comparing homemade syringes at high heparin concentration (~200-300 U heparin/mL) and commercial lithium-heparin tubes (20-30 U/mL). CONCLUSIONS Samples stored at 4°C can be used to determine iCa and iMg concentrations up to 7 days after collection. Other metabolites are stable for up to 8 hours; heparin interference should be taken into account if using homemade heparin syringes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to describe the clinicopathological findings, management and outcome of cats with refeeding syndrome (RS) following prolonged starvation. METHODS Records from four referral hospitals were searched between May 2013 and November 2019 and retrospectively evaluated. Inclusion criteria were the presence of a risk factor for RS, such as severe weight loss or emaciation following a period of presumed starvation, hypophosphataemia or a delta phosphorous exceeding 30% reduction following refeeding, being treated on the basis of a clinical diagnosis of RS and one or more derangement of hypokalaemia, hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia. RESULTS Eleven cats were identified, which had been missing for a median of 6 weeks (range 3-104 weeks). Mean ± SD percentage weight loss was 46% ± 7% (n = 8). Eight of 11 cats developed hypophosphataemia with a mean delta phosphorous of -47% ± 9%. All cats were documented to be hypokalaemic. During hospitalisation, 10/11 cats developed hyperglycaemia and 7/11 cats developed hypoglycaemia. Cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurological signs were common. Eight of 11 cats displayed new or progressive neurological deficits after refeeding, including mentation changes and cerebellar dysfunction. All cats became anaemic and seven cats required a blood transfusion. Eight cats survived to discharge after a mean of 14 ± 4 days of hospitalisation. Six cats developed acute kidney injury (AKI; International Renal Interest Society stage 1). The presence of AKI (P = 0.024) was associated with non-survival and maximum bilirubin concentration was significantly higher in non-survivors (P = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Cats with RS in this cohort had been missing, presumed starved, for more than 3 weeks. In addition to hypophosphataemia and hypokalaemia, altered glucose homeostasis and organ damage involving the liver and kidneys were common. Cats with RS appear to have a good prognosis, but prolonged intensive care is required.

Abstract
Tetanus in dogs is a relatively uncommon neurological disease caused by the sporogenic bacillus Clostridium tetani. This disease is associated with prolonged hospitalization and mortality rates from 8%-50%. A 2-year-old, neutered male King Charles Spaniel and an approximately 8-months-old female Mongrel dog presented to Companion Animal Clinic with symptoms of muscle rigidity and generalized stiffness. A tentative diagnosis of generalized tetanus was made in both dogs. Treatment consisted of IV fluids, antibiotics (metronidazole), human tetanus antitoxin, analgesics and supportive care. Muscle relaxation was provided by midazolam. Acetylpromazine meleate was added to the treatment of the second dog to better control excitability. Each dog received magnesium therapy on the 10th and 3rd days, respectively; which was provided per os to the first dog and constant rate infusion (4 mg/kg/h) to the second dog. The addition of magnesium helped to increase muscle relaxation and increased the time interval between acetylpromazine administration. On the tenth day, magnesium sulfate was discontinued from the second dog and magnesium aspartate (12 mg/kg), twice a day, per os was administered in both animals. Further muscle relaxation was noted in both dogs with a substantial reduction of tetanus symptoms. Both dogs were discharged from Intensive Care Unit on the 14th and 13th day respectively with sole treatment of magnesium aspartate (12 mg/kg) orally, twice a day. Magnesium aspartate was continued for 14 days and 12 days respectively. Both dogs had progressive reduction of muscle rigidity and the first dog recovered completely. The second dog presented again with muscle rigidity and increased spinal reflexes after the discontinuation of magnesium aspartate, thus therapy with magnesium aspartate was started again and symptoms subsided after the second oral dose of magnesium. Therapy was continued for two more weeks during which muscle rigidity subsided and then was stopped. At that time, tetanus symptoms did not relapse and the dog was considered fully recovered. According to the findings of this case series, magnesium therapy may provide further muscle relaxation during the standard therapeutic protocol of tetanus in dogs. In addition, long term symptoms of the disease were adequately managed with the administration of magnesium aspartate, orally.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and plays a critical role in a wide range of physiological processes. Low concentrations of ionised calcium, the most metabolically available form of calcium, have been linked to an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes in dogs. Magnesium plays an important role in parathyroid hormone function. The objective of this study was to define the prevalence and aetiology of hypomagnesaemia in a hospitalised cohort of dogs with ionised hypocalcaemia (IHC). METHODS A total magnesium reference interval was established using serum biochemistry results from 346 clinically healthy dogs. The clinical records of dogs with IHC were reviewed, and concurrent serum magnesium concentrations were recorded alongside clinical signs and underlying aetiology. The prevalence, clinical presentation and aetiology of hypomagnesaemia were examined in the IHC population. RESULTS Two hundred and ninety-five IHC dogs were identified. Hypomagnesaemia was identified in 22%. Total magnesium concentration was significantly higher in dogs with renal disease. The most common cause of concurrent hypomagnesaemia and IHC was gastrointestinal diseases. CONCLUSION Low concentrations of serum magnesium occur in approximately one fifth of all dogs with IHC. Further studies are required to clarify the link between magnesium status, IHC and clinical outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is present in plasma of calves with naturally occurring diarrhea. The second objective was to determine whether plasma [LPS] correlates with clinical, hematological, biochemical, and acid-base variables, and whether [LPS] differs between surviving and nonsurviving diarrheic calves. DESIGN Prospective observational study (January 2012-May 2014). SETTING Veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS Thirty-four calves <28 days old admitted for diagnosis and treatment of diarrhea and 30 healthy control calves. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Admission demographics, physical examination, blood gas, biochemistry analysis, and outcome data were recorded. Plasma concentration of LPS was determined using a bovine LPS ELISA assay. Plasma [LPS] was detected in both healthy and diarrheic calves. Plasma [LPS] was significantly higher in diarrheic than healthy calves (median: 0.99 ng/mL; Interquartile range (IQR): 0.068, vs 0.88 ng/mL; 0.065 ng/mL, respectively; P < 0.001). Plasma [LPS] was higher in nonsurviving (1.04 ng/mL; 0.07 ng/mL) than in surviving calves (0.98 ng/mL; 0.022 ng/mL; P < 0.001). Plasma [LPS] was higher in beef (1.07 ng/mL; 0.182 ng/mL) than in dairy diarrheic calves (0.99 ng/mL; 0.022 ng/mL; P < 0.001). In diarrheic calves, plasma [LPS] correlated with [l-lactate] (r2 = 0.496; P = 0.002); hypoglycemia (r2 = -0.453; P = 0.007); increased unmeasured strong ions (r2 = 0.332; P = 0.050), [Mg2+ ] (r2 = 0.475; P = 0.004), and [phosphate] (r2 = 0.468; P = 0.005), and increased aspartate aminotransferase activity (r2 = 0.348; P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS This study highlights a potential role of LPS in the pathogenesis of metabolic derangements such as hyperlactatemia, hypoglycemia, and increased concentration of unmeasured strong anions in diarrheic calves. Further investigation evaluating the effect of LPS on l-lactate and glucose metabolism in diarrheic calves is warranted.

Abstract
The inappropriate phosphorus retention observed in chronic kidney disease is central to the pathophysiology of mineral and bone disorders observed in these patients. Subsequent derangements in serum fibroblast growth factor 23, parathyroid hormone, and calcitriol concentrations play contributory roles. Therapeutic intervention involves dietary phosphorus restriction and intestinal phosphate binders in order to correct phosphorus retention and maintain normocalcemia. Additional therapies may be considered to normalize serum fibroblast growth factor 23 and parathyroid hormone.
