Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of polydioxanone (PDS) plate and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the regeneration of cartilage grafts, which are frequently used in nasal and septal surgery. Methods: Fifteen white New Zealand Albino-type female rabbits were used in the study. Our study was carried out on 4 different applications on each animal: cartilage only, cartilage+PRP, cartilage+PDS plate, and cartilage+PRP+PDS plate, and in 3 different periods: the first month, the second month, and the third month. Results: A significant difference was obtained between the groups using cartilage+PRP and cartilage+PRP+PDS only in the first month. When both application types were compared, a statistically significant decrease was found in the histopathological cartilage viability score after PDS use. In examining peripheral chondrocyte proliferation, a statistically significant difference was found only in the third-month comparison. When the group using only cartilage was compared with the group using cartilage+PDS, it was determined that peripheral chondrocyte proliferation was significantly reduced at the end of the third month with PDS. In evaluating fibrosis and foreign body reaction, a statistically significant increase was detected using a PDS plate. In histopathological cartilage viability score statistical analysis, a significant difference was obtained between the groups using cartilage+PRP and cartilage+PRP+PDS only in the first month. Degeneration in the cartilage structure was observed macroscopically in the specimens where the PDS plate was used. Shape change and cartilage deformation were observed in the PDS plate specimens. Conclusions: When the results were examined, this observation coincided with the statistically significant increase in foreign body reaction and fibrosis in the PDS plate groups. However, these results contradicted our hypothesis before the study and the information in the literature. Our results will help provide preliminary information and guidance for future studies and offer a different perspective.

Abstract
This narrative review evaluates the existing literature on the clinical efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and plasma rich in growth factors (PRGFs) in extra-oral wound care, considering their potential benefits and drawbacks. The review specifically focuses on the impact of these treatments on patients' quality of life, pain management, treatment costs, recurrence rates, and potential complications. Given the extensive literature and diverse range of extra-oral wound types in which these autologous platelet concentrates have been applied, this narrative review focuses on the most frequently described wound types, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, surgical wounds, and burns. The use of PRP has been reported in various medical specialties, with a low risk of adverse events. While there is a growing interest in the use of PRGF with promising results, the available literature on this topic is still limited. Only a few studies evaluated patients' perception of the treatment and the relationship between treatment costs and clinical outcomes. Data on recurrence rates and complications also vary across studies. In conclusion, PRP and PRGF show promise as alternatives or as adjunctive therapies to conventional treatments for various extra-oral wounds and ulcers, leading to reduced wound size and accelerated healing time but should be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the type and severity of the wound.

Abstract
Regenerative therapies such as fat grafting and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) have emerged as new options to tackle burn-related injuries and their long-term sequelae. Fat grafting is able to promote wound healing by regulating the inflammatory response, stimulating angiogenesis, favoring the remodeling of the extracellular matrix, and enhancing scar appearance. PRP can enhance wound healing by accelerating stages including hemostasis and re-epithelization. It can improve scar quality and complement fat grafting procedures. Their cost-effectiveness, minimal invasiveness, and promising results observed in the literature have made these tools as therapeutic candidates. The current evidence on fat grafting and PRP in acute and reconstructive burns is described and discussed in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is recognized as a safe and effective therapy for regenerative skin healing and rejuvenation, utilizing autologous blood enriched with various growth factors. This review aims to assess the efficacy of PRP treatments for skin rejuvenation. METHODS Keywords such as "platelet-rich plasma," "rejuvenation," "skin aging," and "wrinkles" were queried on Ovid, PubMed, and MEDLINE to identify pertinent studies on PRP treatment for skin rejuvenation. RESULTS Analysis revealed that PRP treatment led to significant enhancements in multiple facial parameters after one to three sessions. Improvements were noted in skin pore size, texture, wrinkle reduction, pigmented spots, collagen density, hyaluronic acid levels, and protection against ultraviolet damage. Combining PRP with hyaluronic acid demonstrated a synergistic effect, particularly enhancing skin elasticity in patients with lower body mass index and firmness in individuals aged 50s and 60s. Incorporating both physical and biometric data for assessment proved superior to relying solely on physical observations for evaluating subtle skin quality and structural changes. CONCLUSION This study underscores the efficacy of PRP monotherapy for skin rejuvenation and emphasizes the necessity of standardizing PRP preparation protocols in future investigations. Heightened awareness and advancements in technology have contributed to the emergence of higher-quality, less biased studies supporting PRP as a reliable and safe therapeutic option for skin rejuvenation.

Abstract
The meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficiency of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the management of burn wounds (BWs). Using dichotomous or contentious random- or fixed-effects models, the outcomes of this meta-analysis were examined and the odds ratio (OR) and the mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed. Thirteen examinations from 2009 to 2023 were enrolled for the present meta-analysis, including 808 individuals with BWs. PRP had significantly shorter healing time (MD, -5.80; 95% CI, -7.73 to -3.88, p < 0.001), higher healing rate (OR, 3.14; 95% CI, 2.05-4.80, p < 0.001), higher healed area percent (MD, 12.67; 95% CI, 9.79-15.55, p < 0.001) and higher graft take area percent (MD, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.51-7.26, p = 0.003) compared with standard therapy in patients with BW. However, no significant difference was found between PRP and standard therapy in graft take ratio (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 0.86-3.34, p = 0.13) and infection rate (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.20-1.47, p = 0.23) in patients with BW. The examined data revealed that PRP had a significantly shorter healing time, a higher healing rate, a higher healed area percent and a higher graft take area percent; however, no significant difference was found in graft take ratio or infection rate compared with standard therapy in patients with BW. Yet, attention should be paid to its values since all of the selected examinations had a low sample size and some comparisons had a low number of selected studies.

The purpose of this review is to give a broad overview of the available interventions, with a brief summary of the evidence base for each intervention.

Abstract
This in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the potential antibacterial properties of canine non-transfusional hemo-components. Therapeutic formulations commonly used for regenerative medicine purposes (platelet-rich plasma, platelet gel, platelet lysate, fibrin glue), considering both leukocyte-rich and leukocyte-poor formulations, but also platelet-poor plasma and activating substances (thrombin, calcium gluconate), were tested to detect elements with potential antimicrobial properties. The antibacterial effect was tested on different bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus subspecies aureus, Staphylococcus cohnii subspecies cohnii, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae subspecies pneumoniae) isolated from canine wounds and classified as susceptible, multidrug-, extensively, and pandrug-resistant bacteria toward a known panel of human and veterinary antibiotics. The evaluation was carried out by agar gel diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) and micro-inhibition in broth using microplates and spectrophotometer reading. The study findings confirmed the hypothesized antibacterial properties of canine non-transfusional hemo-components. A more effective bacteriostatic effect was found against Gram-negative bacteria, drug-resistant too. The presence of leukocytes or platelets does not appear to be essential for the antibacterial effect. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate the exact mechanism of action of the antimicrobial activity. However, non-transfusional hemo-components could be a useful natural aid in controlling bacterial infections in dogs.

Abstract
Significance: Cutaneous wounds are a major problem in both human and equine medicine. The economic cost of treating skin wounds and related complications in humans and horses is high, and in both species, particular types of chronic wounds do not respond well to current therapies, leading to suffering and morbidity. Recent Advances: Conventional methods for the treatment of cutaneous wounds are generic and have not changed significantly in decades. However, as more is learned about the mechanisms involved in normal skin wound healing, and how failure of these processes leads to chronic nonhealing wounds, novel therapies targeting the specific pathologies of hard-to-heal wounds are being developed and evaluated. Critical Issues: Physiologically relevant animal models are needed to (1) study the mechanisms involved in normal and impaired skin wound healing and (2) test newly developed therapies. Future Directions: Similarities in normal wound healing in humans and horses, and the natural development of distinct types of hard-to-heal chronic wounds in both species, make the horse a physiologically relevant model for the study of mechanisms involved in wound repair. Horses are also well-suited models to test novel therapies. In addition, studies in horses have the potential to benefit veterinary, as well as human medicine.

Abstract
Split thickness skin grafting is a common reconstructive technique which carries unavoidable donor site morbidity. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to present the evidence for the use of platelet rich plasma as an adjunct to donor site wound healing. A comprehensive literature search was performed, according to PRISMA guidelines from inception to August 2020, for studies regarding platelet rich plasma and skin graft donor site healing. Animal studies, case series of less than three cases and studies reporting histological outcomes only were excluded. The literature search identified 114 articles. After applying the exclusion criteria, four randomised control trials and two case-control studies remained, incorporating a total of 218 wounds in 139 patients. Four out of six studies reported total healing times for donor site wounds. Pooled analysis showed a significant reduction in healing time when donor wounds were treated with PRP versus controls [MD 5.95, 95% CI 5.04-6.85, p < 0.001]. Of the five studies which reported pain at dressing change, four showed significantly reduced pain scores for the platelet rich plasma treated wounds versus control. There were no significant complications recorded in the treated wounds. The current evidence basis for platelet rich plasma in donor site healing is limited by heterogeneous methodology and reporting outcomes and low powered studies. Nevertheless, the preponderance of data supports its use for accelerating wound healing and reducing pain at dressing change. These preliminary findings need to be substantiated with higher powered randomised controlled trials with standardised PRP manufacture and reporting structures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The standardization of the maxillofacial examination using a validated checklist is highly important. A checklist can also be a valuable tool for epidemiological studies, as it provides all clinical information related to maxillofacial trauma. The aim of this study was to propose a new checklist for the initial evaluation of maxillofacial trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS The development and validation of the new checklist were performed in four consecutive phases: (a) determination of items and development of the checklist; (b) analysis by experts; (c) pre-test; and (d) pilot study. The checklist was designed as follows: (a) Specific signs and symptoms (Part 1); (b) Specific signs and symptoms (Part 2); (c) Intraoral signs and symptoms; and (d) Imaging examination. RESULTS A good level of agreement was found among the experts and no items were excluded during the validation step. The administration of the instrument to the target population revealed the lack of some important aspects of the clinical evaluation, such as halitosis, otorrhea, petechiae, eyelid ptosis, hypo/hyperacusis, and temporomandibular join sounds. These missing signs were included in the final version. CONCLUSIONS This checklist is a practical guide that can be used by specialists or students in oral and maxillofacial surgery and it can contribute to the quality of health care at outpatient and oral-maxillofacial surgery services for patients with maxillofacial trauma.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a nontransfusional hemocomponent, considered as a powerful concentrate of growth factors (GFs) therapeutically used to stimulate tissue regeneration. The use of autologous PRP, as the patient’s own biological material, for therapeutic purposes represents a safe and effective alternative to conventional treatments in both human and veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was the characterization of canine PRP from rheological and biological points of view. Thus, a characterization of the viscoelastic properties of the PRP systems was performed in order to clarify the influence of different calcium concentrations, in the presence of autologous thrombin-rich solution, on the PRP gels’ mechanical properties, from which the applicability of these systems in biomedical treatments is strongly dependent. Then, an evaluation of the content of GFs in PRP, activated or not with thrombin, and stored at different temperatures (37 °C and −20 °C) was performed over time, outlining, for the first time, the importance of the effect of physiological temperature (37 °C) on the production of GFs. A clinical case study conducted in a dog with a complete rupture of the common calcaneal tendon (Achilles tendon) confirmed the relevance of this hemocomponent in the daily veterinary clinical activity and the potential translational value for human health.

Abstract
Autologous blood-derived products (ABP) are the focus of growing scientific interest and are investigated and used for multiple medical indications. ABPs hold promise thanks to their availability, ease of preparation, and low risk of adverse allogenic reaction, hypersensitivity, and contamination. Compositional analysis of ABPs reveals a diverse mixture of cellular components, cytokines and growth factors that play roles in healing processes such as tissue proliferation and angiogenesis, modulation of the local environment through chemotaxis and regulation of inflammation and the extracellular matrix, as well as several immunomodulatory actions. Thus, the administration of ABP induces supraphysiological levels of components necessary for orchestrating reparative efforts in currently difficult-to-treat medical conditions. In this article, we review the variety of autologous blood-derived products, their composition, current clinical uses, regulatory climate, and mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Wound healing requires well-coordinated events including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Delays in any of these stages leads to chronic wounds, infections, and hypertrophic scarring. Burn wounds are particularly problematic, and may require intervention to ensure timely progression to reduce morbidity and mortality. To accelerate burn wound healing, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)1 can be of value, since platelets release growth factor proteins and inorganic polyphosphates (polyP) that may be integral to wound healing. We used polyP-depleted keratinocyte (HaCaT) and fibroblast cell culture models to determine cell proliferation and scratch-wound repair to determine if polyP, platelet lysate, or combined treatment could accelerate wound healing. While polyP and PRP significantly reduced the open scratch-wound area in fibroblasts and keratinocytes, polyP had no effect on keratinocyte or fibroblast proliferation. PRP was also evaluated as a treatment in a murine model of full thickness wound healing in vivo, including a treatment in which PRP was supplemented with purified polyP. PRP induced significantly more rapid re-epithelialization by Day 3. Pure polyP enhanced the effects of PRP on epithelial tongues, which were significantly elongated in the PRP + high-dose polyP treatment groups compared to PRP alone. Thus, PRP and polyP may serve as an effective therapeutic combination for treating wounds.

Abstract
The concept and description of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) started in the field of hematology and is being extensively used in other fields of medicine. Interest in the application of PRP has been increasing in dermatology, such as in tissue regeneration, wound healing, scar revision, skin-rejuvenating effects, and alopecia. PRP is an autologous blood product containing high concentrations of platelets in a small volume of plasma. Different preparations of PRP may lead to different volumes of PRP, platelet concentration, and presence or absence of leukocytes. PRP is being used as a new therapy for some types of non-cicatricial alopecia such as androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and alopecia areata (AA) and, recently, new insights refer to the possibility of action in the field of cicatricial alopecia, like lichen planopillaris (LPP) and frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA). This article aims to identify the major indications for the application of PRP in the field of hair disorders, including non-cicatricial and cicatricial alopecia.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of local platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection as an adjuvant treatment after carpal ligament release. We conducted a prospective randomized, triple-blinded, controlled trial. Fifty participants with mild to extreme carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) were randomly assigned either to the PRP (n = 25) or the platelet-poor plasma (PPP, n = 25) group. After performing open surgical release of the carpal ligament, the inside of the carpal tunnel was irrigated with 3 mL of PRP or PPP according to each participant’s group allocation. The primary outcome was hand grip strength (HGS). Secondary outcomes were the time taken off work after surgery (in days) and scores on the Wong–Baker Faces Scale, Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire, and Southampton Wound Assessment Scale. We evaluated patients before treatment and at 6-weeks. As expected, the pain levels, symptom severity, and functional status improved in all the patients after surgery. However, intragroup analysis revealed that only the participants in the PRP group had regained their pre-operative HGS levels at 6-weeks follow-up. These findings indicate that PRP is an effective adjuvant treatment in patients with mild to severe CTS who require surgery.

Abstract
The process of obtaining blood biologics, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), can be complicated and expensive and is influenced by many vendors and proprietary techniques. The indications for PRP/PRF use remain controversial, and complicated or expensive modes of generating this biologic may lead to many facial plastic surgeons to pass on the use of these potentially useful agents. The lack of standardization of PRP procurement also has led to difficulties in assessing clinical efficacy and comparing study protocols.

Abstract
Treatment of wounds, especially in patients with systemic diseases, is very difficult and time consuming, and it represents great challenge. Complications like infections and impaired healing are regularly seen in these patients, sometimes leaving almost no other treating option, but amputation surgery. In wound healing process, platelets play one of key roles, both in hemostasis, and, by releasing many growth factors, in reepithelization and tissue remodeling. Platelet concentrates are defined as autologous or homologous platelet derivatives with a platelet concentration higher than it is usually in human blood. Concentration of platelets needed to affect wound healing should be 1,000,000/μl. This is a report about patient with pemphigus vulgaris and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, who got injury of the left lower leg. Traditional surgical methods of wound closure and vacuum-assisted closure therapy were ineffective. Homologous platelet gel was used topically, resulting in wound closure, without any adverse effects.

Abstract
Background/Aims Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used for wound healing in various medical fields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of local PRP injections after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).
Methods Patients were non-randomly divided into the following two groups: (1) control group in which patients were administered only an intravenous proton pump inhibitor (PPI), and (2) a study group in which patients were administered an intravenous PPI and a topical PRP injection. We assessed the reduction in the ulcer area and stage of the ulcer after the procedure (24 hours, 48 hours, and 28 days after endoscopic surgery).
Results We enrolled 7 study and 7 control patients. In the study group, the rate of ulcer reduction was 59% compared to 52% in the control group (p=0.372), 28 days after ESD. There were 5 patients in the S stage and 2 patients in the H stage in the study group compared to no patient in the S stage and 7 patients in the H stage in the control group (p=0.05), 28 days after ESD. There were no serious complications in either group.
Conclusions The local injection of PRP is a safe and effective procedure for ulcer healing after ESD.

Abstract
Introduction: The goal of our prospective study was to assess the efficacy of the topical Platelet-rich plasma on reducing superficial perioral wrinkles and restoring the dermal matrix. Materials and methods: 50 women with moderate to severe perioral wrinkles were treated on the perioral area by a single session of fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing plus intradermal injection of prp. 25 patients (group 1) applied topically prp twice a day for 12 weeks as post laser treatment. 25 (group 2) applied gentamicin and betamethasone twice a day for the first 7 days and then hyaluronic acid gel for the following 12 weeks. Results: In group 1, moisture (p < 0.001), amount of collagen fiber (p < 0.001) skin elasticity (p < 0.001), PSAl (p < 0.001) and SSAl (p < 0.001) improved significantly. In group 2 all the parameters investigated improved but did not reach significant difference. Discussion: Our medical device with a plasma-like formulation is able to maintain prp active for a period of 7 days so patients are able to apply topically growth factors at home. Conclusions: Our prospective study proves that the use of topical prp reduces superficial perioral wrinkles and restore dermal matrix when used at home for 12 weeks.

Abstract
In recent years, autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derivatives have been used widely in the regeneration and repair of tissue, but a standard definition and preparation method for PRP are lacking. We developed a standardized method using platelet indices as quality-control indicators for PRP preparation. Twenty-one elderly patients (9 males, 12 females) with complex wounds were treated with standardized platelet-rich plasma (S-PRP). The platelet count in PRP after the second centrifugation was 1,069-1,436 × 109 /L. We adjusted the platelet concentration in PRP after a second centrifugation to 1,000 × 109 /L according to a formula using platelet-poor plasma (PPP). The standardized preparation method that we developed gave S-PRP with a relatively uniform platelet concentration. The wounds of 21 patients showed accelerated healing after S-PRP treatment, and there were no obvious side effects during treatment. These data suggest that our preparation method of S-PRP, using platelet indices as quality-control indicators with platelet count of 1,000 × 109 /L could be used for the treatment of complex wounds in the elderly. The preparation method of S-PRP proposed in the present study may be a simple and effective method of PRP quality control.

Abstract
Despite great advances in skin wound care utilizing grafting techniques, the resulting severe scarring, deformity and ineffective vascularization remains a challenge. Alternatively, tissue engineering of new skin using patient-derived stem cells and scaffolding materials promises to greatly increase the functional and aesthetic outcome of skin wound healing. This work focused on the optimization of a polyethylene glycol modified (PEGylated) platelet-rich plasma (PRP) hydrogel for the protracted release of cytokines, growth factors, and signaling molecules and also the delivery of a provisional physical framework for stem cell angiogenesis. Freshly collected whole blood was utilized to synthesize PEGylated PRP hydrogels containing platelet concentrations ranging from 0 to 200,000 platelets/µl. Hydrogels were characterized using thromboelastography and impedance aggregometry for platelet function and were visualized using scanning electron microscopy. To assess the effects of PEGylated PRP hydrogels on cells, PRP solutions were seeded with human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) prior to gelation. Following 14 days of incubation in vitro, increased platelet concentrations resulted in higher ASC proliferation and vascular gene and protein expression (assessed via RT-PCR, ELISA, and immunochemistry). Using a rat skin excision model, wounds treated with PRP + ASC hydrogels increased the number of vessels in the wound by day 8 (80.2 vs. 62.6 vessels/mm2) compared to controls. In conclusion, the proposed PEGylated PRP hydrogel promoted both in vitro and transient in vivo angiogenesis of ASCs for improved wound healing. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings support an innovative means of cellular therapy intervention to improve surgical wound healing in a normal wound model. ASCs seeded within PEGylated PRP could be an efficacious and completely autologous therapy for treating patients who have poorly healing wounds caused by vascular insufficiency, previous irradiation, or full-thickness burns. Because wound healing is a dynamic and complex process, the application of more than one growth factor with ASCs demonstrates an advantageous way of improving healing.

Abstract
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma with a platelet concentration above baseline. When activated, PRP releases growth factors involved in all stages of wound healing, potentially boosting the healing process. To expand our knowledge of the effectiveness of PRP, it is crucial to know the content and composition of PRP products. In this study, growth factor quantification measurements of PRP from burn patients and gender- and age-matched controls were performed. The PRP of burn patients showed levels of growth factors comparable to those of the PRP of healthy volunteers. Considerable intra-individual variation in growth factor content was found. However, a correlation was found between the platelet count of the PRP and most of the growth factors measured.

Abstract
3D cell culture platforms have emerged as a setting that resembles in vivo environments replacing the traditional 2D platforms. Over the recent years, an extensive effort has been made on the development of more physiologically relevant 3D cell culture platforms. Extracellular matrix-based materials have been reported as a bioactive and biocompatible support for cell culture. For example, human plasma derivatives have been extensively used in cell culture. Despite all the promising results, in most cases these types of materials have poor mechanical properties and poor stability in vitro. Here plasma-based hydrogels with increased stability are proposed. Platelet lysates are modified by addition of methacryloyl groups (PLMA) that polymerize in controlled geometries upon UV light exposure. The hydrogels could also generate porous scaffolds after lyophilization. The results show that PLMA materials have increased mechanical properties that can be easily adjusted by changing PLMA concentration or modification degree. Cells readily adhere, proliferate, and migrate, exhibiting high viability when encapsulated in PLMA hydrogels. The innovation potential of PLMA materials is based on the fact that it is a complete xeno-free solution for human cell culture, thus an effective alternative to the current gold standards for 3D cell culture based on animal products.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and its derivatives have been investigated and applied in regenerative medicine. The use of PRP as a supplement of cell culture media has consistently shown to potentiate stem cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. In addition, the clinical utility of PRP is supported by evidence that PRP contains high concentrations of growth factors (GFs) and proteins which contribute to the regenerative process. PRP based therapies are cost effective and also benefit from the accessibility and safety of using the patient's own GFs. In the last years, a great development has been witnessed on PRP based biomaterials, with both structural and functional purposes. In this study we overview the most relevant PRP applications encompassing PRP based materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This review also summarizes the challenges in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine and provides a perspective on future directions.

Abstract
In recent years, various studies have increasingly explained platelet functions not only in their central role as a regulator in cellular hemostasis and coagulation. In fact, there is growing evidence that under specific conditions, platelets act as a mediator between the vascular system, hemostasis, and the immune system. Therefore, they are essential in many processes involved in tissue remodeling and tissue reorganization after injury or inflammatory responses. These processes include the promotion of inflammatory processes, the contribution to innate and adaptive immune responses during bacterial and viral infections, the modulation of angiogenesis, and the regulation of cell apoptosis in steady-state tissue homeostasis or after tissue breakdown. All in all platelets may contribute to the control of tissue homeostasis much more than generally assumed. This review summarizes the current knowledge of platelets as part of the tissue remodeling network and seeks to provide possible translational implications for clinical therapy.

Abstract
SUMMARY – The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the new method of platelet-rich plasma activation in the form of platelet gel, used in the treatment of non-healing chronic lower leg ulcers. The study was prospectively randomized, double blind and placebo controlled. We treated 60 patients (42 males and 18 females, mean age 69.43 years, SD 14.74) with chronic lower leg ulcers of different etiologies. Thirty patients were treated with allogeneic platelet gel and 30 with hydrogel. Both groups were comparable for duration of ulcer and its size. Treatment was repeated once a week for three consecutive weeks and then the last examination was scheduled at 6 months of the first platelet gel application. The t-test was used to analyze independent samples. Healing of chronic wounds with platelet gel was statistically significantly more effective compared to the treatment with hydrogel (p<0.05). At 6 months of platelet gel application, the mean wound area in the experimental group decreased to 35.01% (SD 53.69) of the initial wound size. In the control group, the wound area decreased to 89.95% (SD 71.82) of the initial wound size (p=0.001). The circumference of the wounds diminished to 54.62% (SD 39.85) of the initial value in the experimental group, compared to 91.28% (SD 29.32) in the control group (p<0.001). Allogeneic platelet gel prepared by the new method used in this study was found to be a good treatment option for non-healing chronic wounds when other methods are ineffective.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is rich in growth factors and has been shown to improve healing in a variety of wounds. We determined the effects of PRP on healing and scarring in full thickness porcine burns with and without tangential excision and grafting (TEG). METHODS Standardized full thickness 5cm by 5cm burns were created on each of the backs and flanks of 10 anesthetized female pigs (25kg) using a validated model. The burns were created with a heating device that emits heat at a temperature of 400°C for a period of 30s. The burns were randomized to one of six treatments: no TEG or PRP, no TEG+PRP, early (day 2) TEG and no PRP, early TEG+PRP, late (day 14) TEG and no PRP, and late TEG+PRP. Tangential excision was performed down to viable tissue and autografts were 0.2mm thick. When used, a thin layer of autologous PRP was applied below the graft. All wounds were then treated with a topical antibiotic ointment 3 times weekly for 42 days. Digital images and full thickness biopsies were taken at 9, 11, 14, 18, 21, 28, 35 and 42days after injury to determine percentage reepithelialization, scar depth, and scar contraction. Tissue sections were stained with H&E and viewed by a dermatopathologist masked to treatment assignment. RESULTS There was no reduction in platelet and white blood cell concentrations in PRP and blood samples for the first 14days after-full thickness burns. A total of 120 burns were created on 10 animals evenly distributed between the six treatment groups. Burns undergoing early TEG reepithelialized fastest and with the thinnest scars followed by late TEG. Burns that did not undergo TEG had the slowest reepithelialization and greatest amount of scarring. Application of PRP had no additional effects on reepithelialization, scar depth, or scar contraction in any of the treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS Addition of PRP had similar effects on reepithelialization and scarring of full thickness porcine burns as standard topical antibiotic ointment regardless of whether the burns underwent excision or grafting or the timing of excision and grafting.

Abstract
A novel bioartificial dermal regeneration template has been developed using platelet-rich plasma and acellular animal skin collagen sponge for the treatment of larger area and full thickness skin wounds. This platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge keeps native skin structure and contains huge amounts of growth factors. The effect of this bioartificial dermal regeneration template was tested in vitro and in vivo via a mimic poor wound healing process by adding collagenase I into cell culture medium or the wound area. The in vitro experimental results indicated that the rat skin cells grew faster and produced more collagen in platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge with collagenase than those treated either with collagen sponge plus collagenase, or collagenase, or control group without treatment. The in vivo experiments were performed by large rat skin wounds, 1.5 cm diameter, treated either with collagenase, or collagenase plus collagen sponge, or collagenase plus platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge. The wound without treatment was used as a control. The wounds treated with collagenase-containing platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge healed 4 times faster than the untreated wounds, 6 times faster than the collagenase treated wounds, 2.4 times faster than collagenase-containing collagen sponge treated wounds. The immunostaining indicated that the healed tissues in the wound areas treated with collagenase-containing platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge were composed of collagen type I and collagen III with blood vessels and hair follicles. The results demonstrated that this collagenase-containing platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge works as a bioartificial dermal regeneration template. The application of this collagenase-containing platelet-rich plasma-collagen sponge promotes the traumatic skin wound healing and permits the reconstitution of the inherent barrier functions of the skin.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is currently used in different medical fields. The interest in the application of PRP in dermatology has recently increased. It is being used in several different applications as in tissue regeneration, wound healing, scar revision, skin rejuvenating effects, and alopecia. PRP is a biological product defined as a portion of the plasma fraction of autologous blood with a platelet concentration above the baseline. It is obtained from the blood of patients collected before centrifugation. The knowledge of the biology, mechanism of action, and classification of the PRP should help clinicians better understand this new therapy and to easily sort and interpret the data available in the literature regarding PRP. In this review, we try to provide useful information for a better understanding of what should and should not be treated with PRP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and promote healing, and there are many options to choose from including alginate, hydrocolloid and protease-modulating dressings. Topical agents have also been used as alternatives to dressings in order to promote healing.A clear and current overview of all the evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding the use of dressings or topical agents for the treatment of pressure ulcers. Such a review would ideally help people with pressure ulcers and health professionals assess the best treatment options. This review is a network meta-analysis (NMA) which assesses the probability of complete ulcer healing associated with alternative dressings and topical agents. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of dressings and topical agents for healing pressure ulcers in any care setting. We aimed to examine this evidence base as a whole, determining probabilities that each treatment is the best, with full assessment of uncertainty and evidence quality. SEARCH METHODS In July 2016 we searched the Cochrane Wounds Specialised Register; the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL); Ovid MEDLINE; Ovid MEDLINE (In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations); Ovid Embase and EBSCO CINAHL Plus. We also searched clinical trials registries for ongoing and unpublished studies, and scanned reference lists of relevant included studies as well as reviews, meta-analyses, guidelines and health technology reports to identify additional studies. There were no restrictions with respect to language, date of publication or study setting. SELECTION CRITERIA Published or unpublished randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of at least one of the following interventions with any other intervention in the treatment of pressure ulcers (Stage 2 or above): any dressing, or any topical agent applied directly to an open pressure ulcer and left in situ. We excluded from this review dressings attached to external devices such as negative pressure wound therapies, skin grafts, growth factor treatments, platelet gels and larval therapy. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently performed study selection, risk of bias assessment and data extraction. We conducted network meta-analysis using frequentist mega-regression methods for the efficacy outcome, probability of complete healing. We modelled the relative effectiveness of any two treatments as a function of each treatment relative to the reference treatment (saline gauze). We assumed that treatment effects were similar within dressings classes (e.g. hydrocolloid, foam). We present estimates of effect with their 95% confidence intervals for individual treatments compared with every other, and we report ranking probabilities for each intervention (probability of being the best, second best, etc treatment). We assessed the certainty (quality) of the body of evidence using GRADE for each network comparison and for the network as whole. MAIN RESULTS We included 51 studies (2947 participants) in this review and carried out NMA in a network of linked interventions for the sole outcome of probability of complete healing. The network included 21 different interventions (13 dressings, 6 topical agents and 2 supplementary linking interventions) and was informed by 39 studies in 2127 participants, of whom 783 had completely healed wounds.We judged the network to be sparse: overall, there were relatively few participants, with few events, both for the number of interventions and the number of mixed treatment contrasts; most studies were small or very small. The consequence of this sparseness is high imprecision in the evidence, and this, coupled with the (mainly) high risk of bias in the studies informing the network, means that we judged the vast majority of the evidence to be of low or very low certainty. We have no confidence in the findings regarding the rank order of interventions in this review (very low-certainty evidence), but we report here a summary of results for some comparisons of interventions compared with saline gauze. We present here only the findings from evidence which we did not consider to be very low certainty, but these reported results should still be interpreted in the context of the very low certainty of the network as a whole.It is not clear whether regimens involving protease-modulating dressings increase the probability of pressure ulcer healing compared with saline gauze (risk ratio (RR) 1.65, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.92 to 2.94) (moderate-certainty evidence: low risk of bias, downgraded for imprecision). This risk ratio of 1.65 corresponds to an absolute difference of 102 more people healed with protease modulating dressings per 1000 people treated than with saline gauze alone (95% CI 13 fewer to 302 more). It is unclear whether the following interventions increase the probability of healing compared with saline gauze (low-certainty evidence): collagenase ointment (RR 2.12, 95% CI 1.06 to 4.22); foam dressings (RR 1.52, 95% CI 1.03 to 2.26); basic wound contact dressings (RR 1.30, 95% CI 0.65 to 2.58) and polyvinylpyrrolidone plus zinc oxide (RR 1.31, 95% CI 0.37 to 4.62); the latter two interventions both had confidence intervals consistent with both a clinically important benefit and a clinically important harm, and the former two interventions each had high risk of bias as well as imprecision. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS A network meta-analysis (NMA) of data from 39 studies (evaluating 21 dressings and topical agents for pressure ulcers) is sparse and the evidence is of low or very low certainty (due mainly to risk of bias and imprecision). Consequently we are unable to determine which dressings or topical agents are the most likely to heal pressure ulcers, and it is generally unclear whether the treatments examined are more effective than saline gauze.More research is needed to determine whether particular dressings or topical agents improve the probability of healing of pressure ulcers. The NMA is uninformative regarding which interventions might best be included in a large trial, and it may be that research is directed towards prevention, leaving clinicians to decide which treatment to use on the basis of wound symptoms, clinical experience, patient preference and cost.

Abstract
Chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, represent a serious clinical problem for patients and clinicians. Management of these wounds has a strong economic impact worldwide. Complications resulting from injuries are a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality. Chronic wounds lead to infections, painful dressings and prolonged hospitalisation. This results in poor patient Quality of Life and in high healthcare costs. Platelet concentrates (PC) are defined as autologous or allogeneic platelet derivatives with a platelet concentration higher than baseline. PC are widely used in different areas of Regenerative Medicine in order to enhance wound healing processes; they include platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet gel (PG), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), serum eye drops (E-S), and PRP eye drops (E-PRP). This review highlights the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet gel (PG) preparation for clinical use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the effects of platelet-rich plasma on tissue maturation and burn healing in an experimental partial-thickness burn injury model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into 3 groups of 10 rats each. Group 1 (platelet-rich plasma group) was exposed to burn injury and topical platelet-rich plasma was applied. Group 2 (control group) was exposed to burn injury only. Group 3 (blood donor group) was used as blood donors for platelet-rich plasma. The rats were killed on the seventh day after burn injury. Tissue hydroxyproline levels were measured and histopathologic changes were examined. RESULTS Hydroxyproline levels were significantly higher in the platelet-rich plasma group than in the control group (P=.03). Histopathologically, there was significantly less inflammatory cell infiltration (P=.005) and there were no statistically significant differences between groups in fibroblast development, collagen production, vessel proliferations, or epithelization. CONCLUSIONS Platelet-rich plasma seems to partially improve burn healing in this experimental burn injury model. As an initial conclusion, it appears that platelet-rich plasma can be used in humans, although further studies should be performed with this type of treatment.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a fraction of blood with a platelet concentration above baseline. When platelets get activated, growth factors involved in wound healing are released. The application of PRP has shown good results in wound care, however, up to date no substantial research has been performed on the effect of PRP in burn treatment. This randomized double blind intra-patient controlled study investigates the effect of autologous PRP on wound healing in burns that require surgery with a meshed split skin graft (SSG). Fifty-two patients with various areas of deep dermal to full thickness burns, receiving surgery with a SSG were included after informed consent. Comparable study areas A and B (intra-patient) were appointed, randomized and either treated with a SSG and PRP or with a SSG alone. At day 5 to 7 postoperative, the epithelialization and graft take rate were assessed. Three, six, and twelve months postoperative, follow-up measurements were performed in the form of POSAS-questionnaires, DermoSpectroMeter, and Cutometer measurements. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean take rate nor the mean epithelialization rate at day 5-7 between the PRP-treated and control areas. However, PRP-treated wound areas showed more often better or equal epithelialization and take rates at day 5-7 than the standard treated areas. Minor effects were also seen in the reoperated and early operated subgroups. At 3, 6, and 12 months postoperative, POSAS scores from the patients and the observers, Dermaspectro-, and Cutometer measurements did not depict a significant difference between the PRP and standard treated areas. Concluding, the addition of PRP in the treatment of burn wounds did not result in improved graft take and epithelialization, nor could we demonstrate better scar quality. There was, however, a considerable variation in our clinical population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report on the clinical benefits of platelet gel application in a non-regenerating skin wound. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION An 84-year-old man presented with a severe wound with a regular circumference in the frontal region which resulted in a complete loss of epidermis and dermis. The skin lesion, induced by cryosurgery used to remove a basal-cell carcinoma, had previously been treated with a dermal substitute application (Integra®). After the failure of the skin graft, the patient was treated using a platelet gel therapeutic protocol which achieved the complete healing of the injured area. CONCLUSION This case showed the clinical efficacy of using platelet gel in this elderly patient in whom the dermal substitute graft had been ineffective.
