Electron-Beam-Induced Modification of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: Carbon Nanomembrane Formation

Electron irradiation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is a versatile tool for lithographic methods and the formation of new 2D materials such as carbon nanomembranes (CNMs). While the interaction between the electron beam and standard thiolate SAMs has been well studied, the effect of electron irradiation for chemically and thermally ultrastable N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) remains unknown. Here we analyze electron irradiation of NHC SAMs featuring different numbers of benzene moieties and different sizes of the nitrogen side groups to modify their structure. Our results provide design rules to optimize NHC SAMs for effective electron-beam modification that includes the formation of sulfur-free CNMs, which are more suitable for ultrafiltration applications. Considering that NHC monolayers exhibit up to 100 times higher stability of their bonding with the metal substrate toward electron-irradiation compared to standard SAMs, they offer a new alternative for chemical lithography where structural modification of SAMs should be limited to the functional group.

Patterning Quantum Dots via Photolithography: A Review

Pixelating patterns of red, green, and blue quantum dots (QDs) is a critical challenge for realizing high-end displays with bright and vivid images for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. Since QDs must be processed from a solution, their patterning process is completely different from the conventional techniques used in the organic light-emitting diode and liquid crystal display industries. Although innovative QD patterning technologies are being developed, photopatterning based on the light-induced chemical conversion of QD films is considered one of the most promising methods for forming micrometer-scale QD patterns that satisfy the precision and fidelity required for commercialization. Moreover, the practical impact will be significant as it directly exploits mature photolithography technologies and facilities that are widely available in the semiconductor industry. This article reviews recent progress in the effort to form QD patterns via photolithography. The review begins with a general description of the photolithography process. Subsequently, different types of photolithographical methods applicable to QD patterning are introduced, followed by recent achievements using these methods in forming high-resolution QD patterns. The paper also discusses prospects for future research directions.

A combined experimental and computational study of the effect of electron irradiation on the transport properties of aromatic and aliphatic molecular self-assemblies

Intermolecular cross-linking through electron irradiation is proven to be an effective tool to improve the mechanical and electronic properties of molecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which is known to be a key player for material nanoarchitectonics. Here we study the effect of electron irradiation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic 5,5'-bis(mercaptomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (BPD; HS-CH2-(C5H3N)2-CH2-SH) and electron saturated 1-dodecanethiol (C12; CH3-(CH2)11-SH) molecules self-assembled on an Au (111) surface. We could not create any successful junctions for transport measurements for the electron irradiated C12 SAMs due the deterioration of such molecules with electron saturated nature. For the aromatic molecules, the electron bombardment results in significant reduction of the current despite the electron irradiation-induced intermolecular cross-linking, which should create extra transport channels for charge carriers. The current rectification also reduces after the electron bombardment. In order to interpret the experimental results and give right diagnostics behind the decrease of the current through the junction after electron irradiation, we supplement the experiment with quantum transport calculations using Green's functional formalism in combination with density functional theory. The simulation results show that the reduced current after electron irradiation can be related to the detachment of the molecules from the gold substrate and reattachment to other molecules. The formation of diamond-like structures due to intermolecular-cross linking can also be the reason for the reduced current obtained in the experiments. We have also considered the case when the BPD molecules get broken-conjugated due to the attachment of extra hydrogen atoms to the carbon backbone of the molecule. This structural modification also results in a significant decrease of the current. These findings can be useful in understanding the processes during the electron irradiation of molecular SAMs.

Investigation of electron-induced cross-linking of self-assembled monolayers by scanning tunneling microscopy

Ultrathin membranes with subnanometer pores enabling molecular size-selective separation were generated on surfaces via electron-induced cross-linking of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The evolution of p-terphenylthiol (TPT) SAMs on Au(111) surfaces into cross-linked monolayers was observed with a scanning tunneling microscope. As the irradiation dose was increased, the cross-linked regions continued to grow and a large number of subnanometer voids appeared. Their equivalent diameter is 0.5 ± 0.2 nm and the areal density is ≈1.7 × 10¹⁷ m^-2. Supported by classical molecular dynamics simulations, we propose that these voids may correspond to free volumes inside a cross-linked monolayer.

Elastic Properties of Poly(ethylene glycol) Nanomembranes and Respective Implications

Free-standing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) membranes were prepared from amine- and epoxy-terminated four-arm STAR-PEG precursors in a thickness range of 40–320 nm. The membranes feature high stability and an extreme elasticity, as emphasized by the very low values of Young’s modulus, varying from 2.08 MPa to 2.6 MPa over the studied thickness range. The extreme elasticity of the membranes stems from the elastomer-like character of the PEG network, consisting of the STAR-PEG cores interconnected by crosslinked PEG chains. This elasticity is only slightly affected by a moderate reduction in the interconnections at a deviation from the standard 1:1 composition of the precursors. However, both the elasticity and stability of the membranes are strongly deteriorated by a strong distortion of the network imposed by electron irradiation of the membranes. In contrast, exposure of the membranes to ultraviolet (UV) light (254 nm) does not affect their elastic properties, supporting the assumption that the only effect of such treatment is the decomposition of the PEG material with subsequent desorption of the released fragments. An analysis of the data allowed for the exclusion of so called “hot electrons” as a possible mechanism behind the modification of the PEG membranes by UV light.

Understanding Complex Electron Radiolysis in Saline Solution by Big Data Analysis

In this article, we developed a new method to analyze the complex chemical reactions induced by electron beam radiolysis based on big data analysis. At first, we built an element transport network to show the chemical reactions. Furthermore, the linearity between the species was quantified by Pearson correlation coefficient analysis. Based on the analysis, the mechanism of the high linearity between the special species pairs was interpreted by the element transport roadmap and chemical equations. The time variation of the pH of the solution and bubble formation in the solution were analyzed by simulation and data analysis. The simulation indicates that O₂ and H₂ can easily oversaturate and form bubbles. Finally, the radiolysis of high-energy electrons in pure water was analyzed as a reference for the radiolysis of high-energy electrons in saline solution. This work provides a new method for investigating a high-energy electron radiolysis process and for simplifying a complex chemical reaction based on quantitative analysis of the species variation in the reaction.

An estimation on the mechanical stabilities of SAMs by low energy Ar+ cluster ion collision

The stability of the molecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is of vital importance to the performance of the molecular electronics and their integration to the future electronics devices. Here we study the effect of electron irradiation-induced cross-linking on the stability of self-assembled monolayer of aromatic 5,5′-bis(mercaptomethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine [BPD; HS-CH₂-(C₅H₃N)₂-CH₂-SH] on Au (111) single crystal surface. As a refence, we also study the properties of SAMs of electron saturated 1-dodecanethiol [C12; CH₃-(CH₂)₁₁-SH] molecules. The stability of the considered SAMs before and after electron-irradiation is studied using low energy Ar⁺ cluster depth profiling monitored by recording the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) core level spectra and the UV-photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) in the valance band range. The results indicate a stronger mechanical stability of BPD SAMs than the C12 SAMs. The stability of BPD SAMs enhances further after electron irradiation due to intermolecular cross-linking, whereas the electron irradiation results in deterioration of C12 molecules due to the saturated nature of the molecules. The depth profiling time of the cross-linked BPD SAM is more than 4 and 8 times longer than the profiling time obtained for pristine and BPD and C12 SAMs, respectively. The UPS results are supported by density functional theory calculations, which show qualitative agreement with the experiment and enable us to interpret the features in the XPS spectra during the etching process for structural characterization. The obtained results offer helpful options to estimate the structural stability of SAMs which is a key factor for the fabrication of molecular devices.

Hybrid application of laser-focused atomic deposition and extreme ultraviolet interference lithography methods for manufacturing of self-traceable nanogratings

A novel hybrid method that combines the laser-focused atomic deposition (LFAD) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) interference lithography has been introduced. The Cr grating manufactured by LFAD has advantages of excellent uniformity, low line edge roughness and its pitch value determined directly by nature constants (i.e. self-traceable). To further enhance the density of the Cr grating, the EUV interference lithography with 13.4 nm wavelength was employed, which replicated the master Cr grating onto a Si wafer with its pitch reduced to half. In order to verify the performance of the gratings manufactured by this novel method, both mask grating (Cr grating) and replicated grating (silicon grating) were calibrated by the metrological large range scanning probe microscope (Met.LR-SPM) at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). The calibrated results show that both gratings have excellent short-term and long-term uniformity: (i) the calibrated position deviation (i.e. nonlinearity) of the grating is below ±1 nm; (ii) the deviation of mean pitch values of 6 randomly selected measurement locations is below 0.003 nm. In addition, the mean pitch value of the Cr grating is calibrated as 212.781 ± 0.008 nm (k = 2). It well agrees with its theoretical value of 212.7787 ± 0.0049 nm, confirming the self-traceability of the manufactured grating by the LFAD. The mean pitch value of the Si grating is calibrated as 106.460 ± 0.012 nm (k = 2). It corresponds to the shrinking factor of 0.500 33 of the applied EUV interference lithographic technique. This factor is very close to its theoretical value of 0.5. The uniform, self-traceable gratings fabricated using this novel approach can be well applied as reference materials in calibrating, e.g. the magnification and uniformity of almost all kinds of high resolution microscopes for nanotechnology.

Electron and X-ray Focused Beam-Induced Cross-Linking in Liquids: Toward Rapid Continuous 3D Nanoprinting and Interfacing using Soft Materials

Multiphoton polymer cross-linking evolves as the core process behind high-resolution additive microfabrication with soft materials for implantable/wearable electronics, tissue engineering, microrobotics, biosensing, drug delivery, etc. Electrons and soft X-rays, in principle, can offer even higher resolution and printing rates. However, these powerful lithographic tools are difficult to apply to vacuum incompatible liquid precursor solutions used in continuous additive fabrication. In this work, using biocompatible hydrogel as a model soft material, we demonstrate high-resolution in-liquid polymer cross-linking using scanning electron and X-ray microscopes. The approach augments the existing solid-state electron/X-ray lithography and beam-induced deposition techniques with a wider class of possible chemical reactions, precursors, and functionalities. We discuss the focused beam cross-linking mechanism, the factors affecting the ultimate feature size, and layer-by-layer printing possibilities. The potential of this technology is demonstrated on a few practically important applications such as in-liquid encapsulation of nanoparticles for plasmonic sensing and interfacing of viable cells with hydrogel electrodes.

Shape controlled assembly of carboxylic acids: formation of a binary monolayer by intercalation into molecular nanotunnels

Binary self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) combining a Y-shaped aromatic carboxylic acid (1,3,5-benzenetribenzoic acid, H3BTB) and a cage-type alicyclic carboxylic acid (adamantane carboxylic acid, AdCA) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The SAMs, prepared by molecular adsorption from solution on Au substrates modified by underpotential deposition of Ag, exhibit a pronounced dependence of their structure on the assembly protocol. Exposing an H3BTB SAM to AdCA, the highly regular row structure of the native H3BTB layer persists and STM imaging does not show signs of AdCA adsorption. This is in striking contrast to the disordered arrangements of H3BTB and the presence of AdCA employing the inverted adsorption sequence or coadsorption of the two molecules. However, spectroscopic analysis of the H3BTB SAM exposed to AdCA reveals the presence also of the latter, suggesting that the AdCA molecules are hidden in the nanotunnels of the H3BTB monolayer. Direct evidence for the intercalation of AdCA is obtained by STM manipulation experiments which lay bare areas of AdCA molecules upon local removal of H3BTB. Surprisingly, these are densely packed and arranged into a highly ordered monolayer. Formation of such a compact AdCA layer is explained by expulsion of AdCA from the H3BTB nanotunnels of the surrounding intact mixed SAM, driven by release of stress in the nanotunnels built up when AdCA is intercalated.

Plasmon-Driven Photocatalysis Leads to Products Known from E-beam and X-ray-Induced Surface Chemistry

Plasmonic metal nanostructures can concentrate incident optical fields in nanometer-sized volumes, called hot spots. This leads to enhanced optical responses of molecules in such a hot spot but also to chemical transformations, driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers. Here, we employ tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) to study the mechanism of these reactions in situ at the level of a single hot spot. Direct spectroscopic measurements reveal the energy distribution of hot electrons, as well as the temperature changes due to plasmonic heating. Therefore, charge-driven reactions can be distinguished from thermal reaction pathways. The products of the hot-carrier-driven reactions are strikingly similar to the ones known from X-ray or e-beam-induced surface chemistry despite the >100-fold energy difference between visible and X-ray photons. Understanding the analogies between those two scenarios implies new strategies for rational design of plasmonic photocatalytic reactions and for the elimination of photoinduced damage in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of Carbon Nanomembranes from Aromatic Self-Assembled Monolayers

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) was employed to investigate the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of biphenylthiol, 4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl-4-thiol, and p-terphenylthiol on Au surfaces and their structural transformations into carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) induced by electron irradiation. The high sensitivity of SERS allows us to identify two types of Raman scattering in electron-irradiated SAMs: (1) Raman-active sites exhibit similar bands as those of pristine SAMs in the fingerprint spectral region, but with indications of an amorphization process and (2) Raman-inactive sites show almost no Raman-scattering signals, except a very weak and broad D band, indicating a lack of structural order but for the presence of graphitic domains. Statistical analysis showed that the ratio of the number of Raman-active sites to the total number of measurement sites decreases exponentially with increasing the electron irradiation dose. The maximum degree of cross-linking ranged from 97 to 99% for the three SAMs. Proof-of-concept experiments were conducted to demonstrate potential applications of Raman-inactive CNMs as a supporting membrane for Raman analysis.

Carbon Nanomembranes

Carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) are synthetic 2D carbon sheets with tailored physical or chemical properties. These depend on the structure, molecular composition, and surroundings on either side. Due to their molecular thickness, they can be regarded as "interfaces without bulk" separating regions of different gaseous, liquid, or solid components and controlling the materials exchange between them. Here, a universal scheme for the fabrication of 1 nm-thick, mechanically stable, functional CNMs is presented. CNMs can be further modified, for example perforated by ion bombardment or chemically functionalized by the binding of other molecules onto the surfaces. The underlying physical and chemical mechanisms are described, and examples are presented for the engineering of complex surface architectures, e.g., nanopatterns of proteins, fluorescent dyes, or polymer brushes. A simple transfer procedure allows CNMs to be placed on various support structures, which makes them available for diverse applications: supports for electron and X-ray microscopy, nanolithography, nanosieves, Janus nanomembranes, polymer carpets, complex layered structures, functionalization of graphene, novel nanoelectronic and nanomechanical devices. To close, the potential of CNMs in filtration and sensorics is discussed. Based on tests for the separation of gas molecules, it is argued that ballistic membranes may play a prominent role in future efforts of materials separation.

A novel design strategy for nanoparticles on nanopatterns: interferometric lithographic patterning of Mms6 biotemplated magnetic nanoparticles

Nanotechnology demands the synthesis of highly precise, functional materials, tailored for specific applications. One such example is bit patterned media. These high-density magnetic data-storage materials require specific and uniform magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to be patterned over large areas (cm² range) in exact nanoscale arrays. However, the realisation of such materials for nanotechnology applications depends upon reproducible fabrication methods that are both precise and environmentally-friendly, for cost-effective scale-up. A potentially ideal biological fabrication methodology is biomineralisation. This is the formation of inorganic minerals within organisms, and is known to be highly controlled down to the nanoscale whilst being carried out under ambient conditions. The magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 uses a suite of dedicated biomineralisation proteins to control the formation of magnetite MNPs within their cell. One of these proteins, Mms6, has been shown to control formation of magnetite MNPs in vitro. We have previously used Mms6 on micro-contact printed (μCP) patterned self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces to control the formation and location of MNPs in microscale arrays, offering a bioinspired and green-route to fabrication. However, μCP cannot produce patterns reliably with nanoscale dimensions, and most alternative nanofabrication techniques are slow and expensive. Interferometric lithography (IL) uses the interference of laser light to produce nanostructures over large areas via a simple process implemented under ambient conditions. Here we combine the bottom-up biomediated approach with a top down IL methodology to produce arrays of uniform magnetite MNPs (86 ± 21 nm) with a period of 357 nm. This shows a potentially revolutionary strategy for the production of magnetic arrays with nanoscale precision in a process with low environmental impact, which could be scaled readily to facilitate large-scale production of nanopatterned surface materials for technological applications.

Self-Assembled Monolayers of Perfluoroanthracenylaminoalkane Thiolates on Gold as Potential Electron Injection Layers

As a material with relatively small band gap and low lying valence orbitals, perfluoroanthracene (PFA) is of interest for the modification of electrode surfaces, for example, as charge injection layers for n-type organic semiconductors. To covalently attach PFA in the form of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), we developed a synthesis of derivatives with a sulfur termination, linked to the 2-position of the PFA moieties by an -NH- group and a short alkane chain with two and three methylene groups, respectively. Spectroscopic characterization of the SAMs reveals that the molecules adopt an almost upright orientation on the gold surface, with the packing density mostly determined by the steric demands of the PFA units. The number of the methylene groups in the -NH-alkyl linker has only a minor impact on the SAM structure because of the nonsymmetric attachment of the PFA units, which permits the compensation of the orientational constraints imposed by the bending potential. The investigated SAMs alter the work function of gold by +(0.59-0.64) eV, suggesting comparably strong depolarization effects, affecting the extent of the work function modification.

Electron Processing at 50 eV of Terphenylthiol Self-Assembled Monolayers: Contributions of Primary and Secondary Electrons

Aromatic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can serve as platforms for development of supramolecular assemblies driven by surface templates. For many applications, electron processing is used to locally reinforce the layer. To achieve better control of the irradiation step, chemical transformations induced by electron impact at 50 eV of terphenylthiol SAMs are studied, with these SAMs serving as model aromatic SAMs. High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) of neutral fragment measurements are combined to investigate electron-induced chemical transformation of the layer. The decrease of the CH stretching HREELS signature is mainly attributed to dehydrogenation, without a noticeable hybridization change of the hydrogenated carbon centers. Its evolution as a function of the irradiation dose gives an estimate of the effective hydrogen content loss cross-section, σ = 2.7-4.7 × 10(-17) cm(2). Electron impact ionization is the major primary mechanism involved, with the impact electronic excitation contributing only marginally. Therefore, special attention is given to the contribution of the low-energy secondary electrons to the induced chemistry. The effective cross-section related to dissociative secondary electron attachment at 6 eV is estimated to be 1 order of magnitude smaller. The 1 eV electrons do not induce significant chemical modification for a 2.5 mC cm(-2) dose, excluding their contribution.

Subnanometre ligand-shell asymmetry leads to Janus-like nanoparticle membranes

Self-assembly of nanoparticles at fluid interfaces has emerged as a simple yet efficient way to create two-dimensional membranes with tunable properties. In these membranes, inorganic nanoparticles are coated with a shell of organic ligands that interlock as spacers and provide tensile strength. Although curvature due to gradients in lipid-bilayer composition and protein scaffolding is a key feature of many biological membranes, creating gradients in nanoparticle membranes has been difficult. Here, we show by X-ray scattering that nanoparticle membranes formed at air/water interfaces exhibit a small but significant ∼6 Å difference in average ligand-shell thickness between their two sides. This affects surface-enhanced Raman scattering and can be used to fold detached free-standing membranes into tubes by exposure to electron beams. Molecular dynamics simulations elucidate the roles of ligand coverage and mobility in producing and maintaining this asymmetry. Understanding this Janus-like membrane asymmetry opens up new avenues for designing nanoparticle superstructures.

Self-assembled monolayer-assisted negative lithography

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been widely employed as etching resists in wet lithography systems to form patterns in which the ordered molecular packing of the SAM regions significantly delays the etchant attack. A generally accepted recognition is that the SAMs ability to resist etching is positively correlated to the quality of the surface-assembled structures, and a more ordered molecular packing would correspond to a better etching resistance. Such a classical belief is debated in the present work by providing an alternative SAM-assisted negative lithography where ordered SAM regions are etched more quickly than their disordered counterparts. This method features a unique photoirradiation-imprinted patterning process that simply consists of two steps: (1) UV irradiation on an OH-terminated SAM-modified gold surface through a photomask and (2) the subsequent immersion of the exposed substrate in an aqueous etching solution of N-bromosuccinimide/pyridine to develop a wet lithographic pattern. The entire experimental process reveals a finding from previous work that the etching rate on the UV-exposed regions with disordered molecular packing could be modulated to be slower than that in the unexposed well-defined SAM regions. Longer irradiation times would also revert the patterns from negative to positive. Thus, by merely using one kind of SAM-modified surface to provide both positive and negative micropatterns on gold layers, one could obtain flexible opportunities for high-resolution micro/nanofabrication resembling photolithography.

Mechanical properties of self-assembled nanoparticle membranes: stretching and bending

Monolayers composed of colloidal nanoparticles, with a thickness of less than ten nanometers, have remarkable mechanical strength and can suspend over micron-sized holes to form free-standing membranes. We discuss experiments probing the tensile strength and bending stiffness of these self-assembled nanoparticle sheets. The fracture behavior of monolayers and multilayers is investigated by attaching them to elastomer substrates which are then stretched. For different applied strain, the fracture patterns are imaged down to the scale of single particles. The resulting detailed information about the crack width distribution allows us to relate the measured overall tensile strength to the distribution of local bond strengths within a layer. We then introduce two methods by which freestanding nanoparticle monolayers can be rolled up into hollow, tubular “nano-scrolls”, either by electron beam irradiation during imaging with a scanning electron microscope or by spontaneous self-rolling. Indentation measurements on the nano-scrolls yield values for the bending stiffness that are significantly larger than expected from the response to stretching. The ability to stretch, bend, and roll up nanoparticle sheets offers new possibilities for a variety of applications, including sensors and mechanical transducers.

Nanocrystal film patterning by inhibiting cation exchange via electron-beam or X-ray lithography

In this Letter we report patterning of colloidal nanocrystal films that combines direct e-beam (electron beam) writing with cation exchange. The e-beam irradiation causes cross-linking of the ligand molecules present at the nanocrystal surface, and the cross-linked molecules act as a mask for further processing. Consequently, in the following step of cation exchange, which is performed by directly dipping the substrate in a solution containing the new cations, the regions that have not been exposed to the electron beam are chemically transformed, while the exposed ones remain unchanged. This selective protection allows the design of patterns that are formed by chemically different nanocrystals, yet in a homogeneous nanocrystal film. Spatially resolved compositional analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) corroborates that the selective exchange occurs only in the nonirradiated regions. We demonstrate the utility of this lithography approach by fabricating conductive wires and luminescent patterns in CdSe/CdS nanocrystal films by converting nonirradiated regions to Cu2-xSe/Cu2-xS. Furthermore, we show that X-ray irradiation too can lead to protection from cation exchange.

Telegraphic noise in transport through colloidal quantum dots

We report measurements of electrical transport through single CdSe/CdS core/shell colloidal quantum dots (cQDs) connected to source and drain contacts. We observe telegraphic switching noise showing few plateaus at room temperature. We model and interpret these results as charge trapping of individual trap states, and therefore we resolve individual charge defects in these high-quality low-strain cQDs. The small number of observed defects quantitatively validates the passivation method based on thick CdS shells nearly lattice-matched to CdSe cores first developed to suppress photoluminescence blinking. Finally, we introduce a figure of merit useful to efficiently distinguish telegraphic noise from noise with a Gaussian distribution.

Fabrications and Applications of Stimulus-Responsive Polymer Films and Patterns on Surfaces: A Review

In the past two decades, we have witnessed significant progress in developing high performance stimuli-responsive polymeric materials. This review focuses on recent developments in the preparation and application of patterned stimuli-responsive polymers, including thermoresponsive layers, pH/ionic-responsive hydrogels, photo-responsive film, magnetically-responsive composites, electroactive composites, and solvent-responsive composites. Many important new applications for stimuli-responsive polymers lie in the field of nano- and micro-fabrication, where stimuli-responsive polymers are being established as important manipulation tools. Some techniques have been developed to selectively position organic molecules and then to obtain well-defined patterned substrates at the micrometer or submicrometer scale. Methods for patterning of stimuli-responsive hydrogels, including photolithography, electron beam lithography, scanning probe writing, and printing techniques (microcontact printing, ink-jet printing) were surveyed. We also surveyed the applications of nanostructured stimuli-responsive hydrogels, such as biotechnology (biological interfaces and purification of biomacromoles), switchable wettability, sensors (optical sensors, biosensors, chemical sensors), and actuators.

Polymorphism in self-assembled terphenylthiolate monolayers on Au(111)

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of terphenylthiol (TPT) on gold Au(111) substrates exhibit well-ordered structures over large scales if they are annealed in ethanol at 40 °C after their formation. Using high-resolution STM, two distinct, ordered phases could be observed. The simpler phase, designated as α-phase, consists of closely packed molecules in the well-known (2√3 × √3)R30° structure. It could be demonstrated that under less suitable imaging conditions this phase can be mistaken as the hexagonal (√3 × √3)R30°, which resolves a discrepancy in between previous reports. The second phase is characterized by a stripe pattern with a periodicity of 2.0 nm and can be described by a point-on-line incommensurate (4 × n) ([Formula: see text]) lattice with n close to 8. This β-phase contains four pairs of terphenylthiolate molecules, which might be held together by either disulfide bonds or the recently discussed S-Au-S motif, and is thus 35% ± 15% less densely packed than the α-phase. The coexistence of these phases explains the variability of spectroscopic results obtained in the past for terphenylthiolate layers, since their relative proportion determines the average thicknesses/tilt angles found in these studies.

Electron beam induced surface activation of ultrathin porphyrin layers on Ag(111)

We demonstrate how a focused electron beam can be used to chemically activate porphyrin layers on Ag(111) such that they become locally reactive toward the decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl, Fe(CO)5. This finding considerably expands the scope of electron beam induced surface activation (EBISA) and also has implications for electron beam induced deposition (EBID). The influence of the porphyrin layer thickness on both processes is studied in detail using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning Auger microscopy (SAM). While a closed monolayer of porphyrin molecules does exhibit some activity toward Fe(CO)5 decomposition after electron irradiation, a growth enhancement is found for bi- and multilayer films. This is attributed to a partial quenching of activated centers in the first layer due to the close proximity of the silver substrate. In addition, we demonstrate that the catalytic decomposition of gaseous Fe(CO)5 on Ag(111) can be effectively inhibited by introducing a densely packed monolayer of 2H-tetraphenylporphyrin (2HTPP) molecules.

Towards easy and reliable AFM tip shape determination using blind tip reconstruction

Quantitative determination of the geometry of an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe tip is critical for robust measurements of the nanoscale properties of surfaces, including accurate measurement of sample features and quantification of tribological characteristics. Blind tip reconstruction, which determines tip shape from an AFM image scan without knowledge of tip or sample shape, was established most notably by Villarrubia [J. Res. Natl. Inst. Stand. Tech. 102 (1997)] and has been further developed since that time. Nevertheless, the implementation of blind tip reconstruction for the general user to produce reliable and consistent estimates of tip shape has been hindered due to ambiguity about how to choose the key input parameters, such as tip matrix size and threshold value, which strongly impact the results of the tip reconstruction. These key parameters are investigated here via Villarrubia's blind tip reconstruction algorithms in which we have added the capability for users to systematically vary the key tip reconstruction parameters, evaluate the set of possible tip reconstructions, and determine the optimal tip reconstruction for a given sample. We demonstrate the capabilities of these algorithms through analysis of a set of simulated AFM images and provide practical guidelines for users of the blind tip reconstruction method. We present a reliable method to choose the threshold parameter corresponding to an optimal reconstructed tip shape for a given image. Specifically, we show that the trend in how the reconstructed tip shape varies with threshold number is so regular that the optimal, or Goldilocks, threshold value corresponds with the peak in the derivative of the RMS difference with respect to the zero threshold curve vs. threshold number.

Modification and patterning of nanometer-thin poly(ethylene glycol) films by electron irradiation

In this study, we analyzed the effect of electron irradiation on highly cross-linked and nanometer-thin poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) films and, in combination with electron beam lithography (EBL), tested the possibility to prepare different patterns on their basis. Using several complementary spectroscopic techniques, we demonstrated that electron irradiation results in significant chemical modification and partial desorption of the PEG material. The initially well-defined films were progressively transformed in carbon-enriched and oxygen-depleted aliphatic layers with, presumably, still a high percentage of intermolecular cross-linking bonds. The modification of the films occurred very rapidly at low doses, slowed down at moderate doses, and exhibited a leveling off behavior at higher doses. On the basis of these results, we demonstrated the fabrication of wettability patterns and sculpturing complex 3D microstructures on the PEG basis. The swelling behavior of such morphological patterns was studied in detail, and it was shown that, in contrast to the pristine material, irradiated areas of the PEG films reveal an almost complete absence of the hydrogel-typical swelling behavior. The associated sealing of the irradiated areas allows a controlled deposition of objects dissolved in water, such as metal nanoparticles or fluorophores, into the surrounding, pristine areas, resulting in the formation of nanocomposite patterns. In contrast, due to the distinct protein-repelling properties of the PEG films, proteins are exclusively adsorbed onto the irradiated areas. This makes such films a suitable platform to prepare protein-affinity patterns in a protein-repelling background.

High-resolution, high-throughput, positive-tone patterning of poly(ethylene glycol) by helium beam exposure through stencil masks

In this work, a collimated helium beam was used to activate a thiol-poly(ethylene glycol) (SH-PEG) monolayer on gold to selectively capture proteins in the exposed regions. Protein patterns were formed at high throughput by exposing a stencil mask placed in proximity to the PEG-coated surface to a broad beam of helium particles, followed by incubation in a protein solution. Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectra showed that SH-PEG molecules remain attached to gold after exposure to beam doses of 1.5-60 µC/cm(2) and incubation in PBS buffer for one hour, as evidenced by the presence of characteristic ether and methoxy peaks at 1120 cm(-1) and 2870 cm(-1), respectively. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) spectra showed that increasing beam doses destroy ether (C-O) bonds in PEG molecules as evidenced by the decrease in carbon C1s peak at 286.6 eV and increased alkyl (C-C) signal at 284.6 eV. XPS spectra also demonstrated protein capture on beam-exposed PEG regions through the appearance of a nitrogen N1s peak at 400 eV and carbon C1s peak at 288 eV binding energies, while the unexposed PEG areas remained protein-free. The characteristic activities of avidin and horseradish peroxidase were preserved after attachment on beam-exposed regions. Protein patterns created using a 35 µm mesh mask were visualized by localized formation of insoluble diformazan precipitates by alkaline phosphatase conversion of its substrate bromochloroindoyl phosphate-nitroblue tetrazolium (BCIP-NBT) and by avidin binding of biotinylated antibodies conjugated on 100 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNP). Patterns created using a mask with smaller 300 nm openings were detected by specific binding of 40 nm AuNP probes and by localized HRP-mediated deposition of silver nanoparticles. Corresponding BSA-passivated negative controls showed very few bound AuNP probes and little to no enzymatic formation of diformazan precipitates or silver nanoparticles.

Oxygen attachment on alkanethiolate SAMs induced by low-energy electron irradiation

Reactions of (18)O2 with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films of 1-dodecanethiol, 1-octadecanethiol, 1-butanethiol, and benzyl mercaptan chemisorbed on gold were studied by the electron stimulated desorption (ESD) of anionic fragments over the incident electron energy range 2-20 eV. Dosing the SAMs with (18)O2 at 50 K results in the ESD of (18)O(-) and (18)OH(-). Electron irradiation of samples prior to (18)O2 deposition demonstrates that intensity of subsequent (18)O(-) and (18)OH(-) desorption signals increase with electron fluence and that in the absence of electron preirradiation, no (18)O(-) and (18)OH(-) ESD signals are observed, since oxygen is unable to bind to the SAMs. A minimum incident electron energy of 6-7 eV is required to initiate the binding of (18)O2 to the SAMs. O2 binding is proposed to proceed by the formation of CHx-1(•) radicals via resonant dissociative electron attachment and nonresonant C-H dissociation processes. The weaker signals of (18)O(-) and (18)OH(-) from short-chain SAMs are related to the latter's resistance to electron-induced damage, due to the charge-image dipole quenching and electron delocalization. Comparison between the present results and those for DNA oligonucleotides self-assembled on Au (Mirsaleh-Kohan, N. et al. J. Chem. Phys. 2012, 136, 235104) indicates that the oxygen binding mechanism is common to both systems.

Thymine/adenine diblock-oligonucleotide monolayers and hybrid brushes on gold: a spectroscopic study

BACKGROUND

The establishment of spectroscopic analysis techniques for complex, surface-bound biological systems is an important step toward the further application of these powerful experimental tools to new questions in biology and medicine.

METHODS

We use a combination of the complementary spectroscopic techniques of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, and near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy to monitor the composition and molecular orientation in adenine/thymine diblock oligonucleotide films and their hybridized brushes on gold.

RESULTS

We demonstrate that the surface-bound probe molecules, consisting of a binding adenine block, d(A), and a sensing thymine block, d(T), deviate from the ideal L-shape model due to the internal intra- and intermolecular hybridization. This effect becomes more pronounced with increasing length of the d(A) block. Nevertheless, these films were found to hybridize well with the complementary target d(A) strands, especially if they were treated in advance to reduce internal interaction between the molecules. In spite of the structural complexity of these films, the hybridization efficiency correlated well with the potential accessibility of the sensing d(T) blocks, defined by their lateral spacing.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings are a good demonstration of the strength of multi-technique spectroscopic analysis when applied to assemblies of biological molecules intrinsically prone to complex interactions.

Rapid formation of a dense sulfur layer on gold through use of triphenylmethane sulfenyl chloride as a precursor

The use of triphenylmethane sulfenyl chloride as a new precursor leads to the efficient deposition of sulfur on polycrystalline gold and Au(111) substrates. The modified surfaces are characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemistry and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The XPS data shows the rapid deposition of polymeric sulfur within very short times. Electrochemical stripping cyclic voltammetry (CV) confirms the rapid deposition and shows that high coverage values are achieved. STM imaging shows the formation of a wide range sulfur layer and production of the well-known etch pits. High-resolution STM images confirm the high density of the sulfur layers and show formation of a long-range phase consisting of rhombus structures close to the previously described rectangular structures along with other parallelograms and partial parallelograms. The present results do not show the initial formation of any organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) indicating that the formation of polymeric sulfur does not result from the decomposition of an initial SAM as previously observed with alkyl and aryl thiolate-based SAMs. The suggested mechanism involves an initial reductive process similar to the one reported for thiocyanates and sulfenyl chlorides. This is followed by the dissociation of the Ph(3)C-S bond, leaving only sulfur on the surface, through a process leading to the recombination of the remaining fragments to yield triphenylmethyl chloride.

Nitro-substituted arene sulfenyl chlorides as precursors to the formation of aromatic SAMs

The formation of aromatic SAMs on Au(111) using three nitro-substituted arene sulfenyl chlorides (4-nitrophenyl sulfenyl chloride (1), 2-nitrophenyl sulfenyl chloride (2), and 2,4-dinitrophenyl sulfenyl chloride (3)) is studied. The formation of SAMs and their quality are investigated as a function of the position of the nitro substituent(s) on the aromatic ring. The modified surfaces are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PMIRRAS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results show that all three compounds are deposited on Au within very short times. The corresponding coverages are determined using CV. However, only compound 1 forms stable, long-range, well-ordered SAMs. The 4-nitrophenyl thiolate is adsorbed nearly vertically on the Au surface. Compounds 2 and 3 both form lower-quality SAMs where the adsorbed nitro-phenyl thiolates are more tilted. These SAMs are less stable than the ones obtained with the 4-nitrosubsituted precursor and decompose with time, leaving only sulfur on the gold surface.

Modification of nitrile-terminated biphenylthiol self-assembled monolayers by electron irradiation and related applications

Here we describe the behavior of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4'-cyanobiphenyl-4-thiol (CBPT) on Au(111) upon electron irradiation. Under such a treatment, the aromatic framework of CBPT SAMs is laterally cross-linked while the nitrile groups, located at the SAM-ambience interface, are reduced to active amine moieties which can be used as docking sites for the coupling of other species. This makes CBPT monolayers as a promising system for conventional and chemical lithography as well as for nanofabrication. Along these lines, we demonstrate the preparation of complex polymer brushes, patterning of the underlying substrate, and fabrication of molecule-thin, free-standing membranes on the basis of CBPT SAMs. The balance between the application-favorable processes and defragmentation in these films is studied in detail, and comparison to the well-established (for the relevant applications) system of 4'-nitrobiphenyl-4-thiols is performed. Taking CBPT SAMs as a model system, the effect of the energy of the primary electrons on the extent of the chemical transformation and cross-linking in substituted aromatic SAMs is investigated.

Electron-beam patterned self-assembled monolayers as templates for Cu electrodeposition and lift-off

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4'-methylbiphenyl-4-thiol (MBP0) adsorbed on polycrystalline gold substrates served as templates to control electrochemical deposition of Cu structures from acidic solution, and enabled the subsequent lift-off of the metal structures by attachment to epoxy glue. By exploiting the negative-resist behaviour of MBP0, the SAM was patterned by means of electron-beam lithography. For high deposition contrast a two-step procedure was employed involving a nucleation phase around -0.7 V versus Cu(2+)/Cu and a growth phase at around -0.35 V versus Cu(2+)/Cu. Structures with features down to 100 nm were deposited and transferred with high fidelity. By using substrates with different surface morphologies, AFM measurements revealed that the roughness of the substrate is a crucial factor but not the only one determining the roughness of the copper surface that is exposed after lift-off.

Substrate-mediated effects in photothermal patterning of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers with microfocused continuous-wave lasers

In recent years, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been demonstrated to provide promising new approaches to nonlinear laser processing. Most notably, because of their ultrathin nature, indirect excitation mechanisms can be exploited in order to fabricate subwavelength structures. In photothermal processing, for example, microfocused lasers are used to locally heat the substrate surface and initiate desorption or decomposition of the coating. Because of the strongly temperature-dependent desorption kinetics, the overall process is highly nonlinear in the applied laser power. For this reason, subwavelength patterning is feasible employing ordinary continuous-wave lasers. The lateral resolution, generally, depends on both the type of the organic monolayer and the nature of the substrate. In previous studies we reported on photothermal patterning of distinct types of SAMs on Si supports. In this contribution, a systematic study on the impact of the substrate is presented. Alkanethiol SAMs on Au-coated glass and silicon substrates were patterned by using a microfocused laser beam at a wavelength of 532 nm. Temperature calculations and thermokinetic simulations were carried out in order to clarify the processes that determine the performance of the patterning technique. Because of the strongly temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of Si, surface-temperature profiles on Au/Si substrates are very narrow ensuring a particularly high lateral resolution. At a 1/e spot diameter of 2 µm, fabrication of subwavelength structures with diameters of 300-400 nm is feasible. Rapid heat dissipation, though, requires high laser powers. In contrast, patterning of SAMs on Au/glass substrates is strongly affected by the largely distinct heat conduction within the Au film and in the glass support. This results in broad surface temperature profiles. Hence, minimum structure sizes are larger when compared with respective values on Au/Si substrates. The required laser powers, though, are more than one order of magnitude lower. Also, the laser power needed for patterning decreases with decreasing Au layer thickness. These results demonstrate the impact of the substrate on the overall patterning process and provide new perspectives in photothermal laser patterning of ultrathin organic coatings.

X-ray spectroscopy characterization of self-assembled monolayers of nitrile-substituted oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s with variable chain length

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of nitrile-substituted oligo(phenylene ethynylene) thiols (NC-OPEn) with a variable chain length n (n ranging from one to three structural units) on Au(111) were studied by synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge absorption fine-structure spectroscopy. The experimental data suggest that the NC-OPEn molecules form well-defined SAMs on Au(111), with all the molecules bound to the substrate through the gold-thiolate anchor and the nitrile tail groups located at the SAM-ambient interface. The packing density in these SAMs was found to be close to that of alkanethiolate monolayers on Au(111), independent of the chain length. Similar behavior was found for the molecular inclination, with an average tilt angle of ~33-36° for all the target systems. In contrast, the average twist of the OPEn backbone (planar conformation) was found to depend on the molecular length, being close to 45° for the films comprising the short OPE chains and ~53.5° for the long chains. Analysis of the data suggests that the attachment of the nitrile moiety, which served as a spectroscopic marker group, to the OPEn backbone did not significantly affect the molecular orientation in the SAMs.

Physical structure of standing-up aromatic SAMs revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy

Long-range-ordered aromatic SAMs are formed on Au(111) using 4-nitrophenyl sulfenyl chloride as a precursor. Although the main structure is a √3 × √3 with a molecular density similar to that usually found for aliphatic SAMs, particular spots presenting specific shapes are also observed by STM. These include hexagons, partial hexagons, parallelograms, and zigzags resulting from specific arrangements of adsorbed molecules. These molecular arrangements are reversible as they form and dissociate or "vanish" in various areas on the surface. STM shows that these particular structures provide some order to their surrounding because areas void of these structures look less ordered. More interestingly, STM shows submolecular details of the molecules involved in forming these structures, hence providing direct experimental evidence for the ability of the STM to provide physical structure information of standing up SAMs. This is indeed a heavily debated question, and this work reports the first experimental example where submolecular physical structure is revealed by STM for standing-up SAMs.

Hybridization in ssDNA films--a multi-technique spectroscopy study

A combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution XPS, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and sum-frequency-generation (SFG) spectroscopy was used to monitor two types of ssDNA films on Au(111) before and after hybridization. As probe systems, films of thiolated and block-oligonucleotides were used, taking thiolated thymine d(T) homo-oligonucleotides and thymine-adenine d(A-T) diblock-oligonucleotides as representative examples. In accordance with previous work, hybridization of the shorter and more densely packed thiolated ssDNA films produced fewer (if any) hybrids, whereas the longer and less densely packed layers exhibited a larger hybridization yield. The above effects were less pronounced in the case of the d(A-T) films where the hybridization yield of the less densely packed monolayers was significantly lower. This was presumably due to the formation of internal dimeric hybrids in the immobilization step of the probe molecules, resulting in the generation of fewer probe-target hybrids upon exposure to the target molecules. In all ssDNA films displaying a reasonable number of hybrids present, significant orientational changes were observed and could be monitored in detail. These results suggest that the given combination of spectroscopic techniques can be a valuable tool to gain molecular-level information about hybrids at interfaces.

Strain patterning and direct measurement of Poisson's ratio in nanoparticle monolayer sheets

Close-packed monolayers self-assembled from ligated nanoparticles can form 10 nm thin sheets that stretch over micrometer-wide holes. Employing electron and focused ion beams, we show that one can locally tailor the strain in such sheets while they remain clamped around their perimeter, making it possible to imprint strain fields by design. Furthermore, using the nanoparticles themselves to track imposed strain gradients allows for the first direct measurement of Poisson's ratio in these two-dimensional materials.
