Hierarchical Supramolecular Aggregation of Molecular Nanoparticles for Granular Materials with Ultra High-Speed Impact-Resistance

The high-speed impact-resistanct materials are of great significance while their development is hindered by the intrinsic tradeoff between mechanical strength and energy dissipation capability. Herein, the new chemical system of molecular granular material (MGM) is developed for the design of impact-resistant materials from the supramolecular complexation of sub-nm molecular clusters (MCs) and hyper-branched polyelectrolytes. Their hierarchical aggregation provides the origin of the decoupling of mechanical strengths and structural relaxation dynamics. The MCs' intrinsic fast dynamics afford excellent high-speed impact-resistance, up to 5600 s-1 impact in a typical split-Hopkinson pressure bar test while only tiny boundary cracks can be observed even under 7200 s-1 impact. The high loadings of MCs and their hierarchical aggregates provide high-density sacrificial bonding for the effective dissipation of the impact energy, enabling the protection of fragile devices from the direct impact of over 200 m s-1 bullet. Moreover, the MGMs can be conveniently processed into protective coatings or films with promising recyclability due to the supramolecular interaction feature. The research not only reveals the unique relaxation dynamics and mechanical properties of MGMs in comparison with polymers and colloids, but also develops new chemical systems for the fabrication of high-speed impact-resistant materials.

Sustainable Plastics with High Performance and Convenient Processibility

Designing and making sustainable plastics is especially urgent to reduce their ecological and environmental impacts. However, it remains challenging to construct plastics with simultaneous high sustainability and outstanding comprehensive performance. Here, a composite strategy of in situ polymerizing a petroleum-based monomer with the presence of an industrialized bio-derived polymer in a quasi-solvent-free system is introduced, affording the plastic with excellent mechanical robustness, impressive thermal and solvent stability, as well as low energy, consumes during production, processing, and recycling. Particularly, the plastic can be easily processed into diverse shapes through 3D printing, injection molding, etc. during polymerization and further reprocessed into other complex structures via eco-friendly hydrosetting. In addition, the plastic is mechanically robust with Young's modulus of up to 3.7 GPa and tensile breaking strength of up to 150.2 MPa, superior to many commercially available plastics and other sustainable plastics. It is revealed that hierarchical hydrogen bonds in plastic predominate the well-balanced sustainability and performance. This work provides a new path for fabricating high-performance sustainable plastic toward practical applications, contributing to the circular economy.

Guidelines derived from biomineralized tissues for design and construction of high-performance biomimetic materials: from weak to strong

Living organisms in nature have undergone continuous evolution over billions of years, resulting in the formation of high-performance fracture-resistant biomineralized tissues such as bones and teeth to fulfill mechanical and biological functions, despite the fact that most inorganic biominerals that constitute biomineralized tissues are weak and brittle. During the long-period evolution process, nature has evolved a number of highly effective and smart strategies to design chemical compositions and structures of biomineralized tissues to enable superior properties and to adapt to surrounding environments. Most biomineralized tissues have hierarchically ordered structures consisting of very small building blocks on the nanometer scale (nanoparticles, nanofibers or nanoflakes) to reduce the inherent weaknesses and brittleness of corresponding inorganic biominerals, to prevent crack initiation and propagation, and to allow high defect tolerance. The bioinspired principles derived from biomineralized tissues are indispensable for designing and constructing high-performance biomimetic materials. In recent years, a large number of high-performance biomimetic materials have been prepared based on these bioinspired principles with a large volume of literature covering this topic. Therefore, a timely and comprehensive review on this hot topic is highly important and contributes to the future development of this rapidly evolving research field. This review article aims to be comprehensive, authoritative, and critical with wide general interest to the science community, summarizing recent advances in revealing the formation processes, composition, and structures of biomineralized tissues, providing in-depth insights into guidelines derived from biomineralized tissues for the design and construction of high-performance biomimetic materials, and discussing recent progress, current research trends, key problems, future main research directions and challenges, and future perspectives in this exciting and rapidly evolving research field.

Hydrogen Bonding Competition Mediated Phase Separation with Abnormal Moisture-Induced Stiffness Boosting

Moisture usually deteriorates polymers' mechanical performance owing to its plasticizing effect, causing side effects in their practical load-bearing applications. Herein, a simple binary ionogel consisting of an amphiphilic polymer network and a hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) is developed with remarkable stiffening effect after moisture absorption, demonstrating a complete contrast to water-induced softening effect of most polymer materials. Such a moisture-induced stiffening behavior is induced by phase separation after hydration of this binary ionogel. Specifically, it is revealed that hydrogen (H)-bonding structures play a dominant role in the humidity-responsive behavior of the ionogel, where water will preferentially interact with polymer chains through H-bonding and break the polymer-IL H-bonds, thus leading to phase separation structures with modulus boosting. This work may provide a facile and effective molecular engineering route to construct mechanically adaptive polymers with water-induced dramatic stiffening for diverse applications.

Sustainable liquid metal-induced conductive nacre

Nacre has inspired research to fabricate tough bulk composites for practical applications using inorganic nanomaterials as building blocks. However, with the considerable pressure to reduce global carbon emissions, preparing nacre-inspired composites remains a significant challenge using more economical and environmentally friendly building blocks. Here we demonstrate tough and conductive nacre by assembling aragonite platelets exfoliated from natural nacre, with liquid metal and sodium alginate used as the "mortar". The formation of GaOC coordination bonding between the gallium ions and sodium alginate molecules reduces the voids and improves compactness. The resultant conductive nacre exhibits much higher mechanical properties than natural nacre. It also shows excellent impact resistance attributed to the synergistic strengthening and toughening fracture mechanisms induced by liquid metal and sodium alginate. Furthermore, our conductive nacre exhibits exceptional self-monitoring sensitivity for maintaining structural integrity. The proposed strategy provides a novel avenue for turning natural nacre into a valuable green composite.

Entropy-Driven Design of Highly Impact-Stiffening Supramolecular Polymer Networks with Salt-Bridge Hydrogen Bonds

Impact-stiffening materials that undergo a strain rate-induced soft-to-rigid transition hold great promise as soft armors in the protection of the human body and equipment. However, current impact-stiffening materials, such as polyborosiloxanes and shear-thickening fluids, often exhibit a limited impact-stiffening response. Herein, we propose a design strategy for fabricating highly impact-stiffening supramolecular polymer networks by leveraging high-entropy-penalty physical interactions. We synthesized a fully biobased supramolecular polymer comprising poly(α-thioctic acid) and arginine clusters, whose chain dynamics are governed by highly specific guanidinium-carboxylate salt-bridge hydrogen bonds. The resulting material exhibits an exceptional impact-stiffening response of ∼2100 times, transitioning from a soft dissipating state (21 kPa, 0.1 Hz) to a highly stiffened glassy state (45.3 MPa, 100 Hz) with increasing strain rates. Moreover, the material's high energy-dissipating and hot-melting properties bring excellent damping performance and easy hybridization with other scaffolds. This entropy-driven approach paves the way for the development of next-generation soft, sustainable, and impact-resistant materials.

Bamboo-Inspired Crack-Face Bridging Fiber Reinforced Composites Simultaneously Attain High Strength and Toughness

Biological strong and tough materials have been providing original structural designs for developing bioinspired high-performance composites. However, new synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanisms from bioinspired structures remain yet to be explored and employed to upgrade current carbon material reinforced polymer composites, which are keystone to various modern industries. In this work, from bamboo, the featured cell face-bridging fibers, are abstracted and embedded in a cellular network structure, and develop an epoxy resin/carbon composite featuring biomimetic architecture through a fabrication approach integrating freeze casting, carbonization, and resin infusion with carbon fibers (CFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Results show that this bamboo-inspired crack-face bridging fiber reinforced composite simultaneously possesses a high strength (430.8 MPa) and an impressive toughness (8.3 MPa m1/2 ), which surpass those of most resin-based nanocomposites reported in the literature. Experiments and multiscale simulation models reveal novel synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanisms arising from the 2D faces that bridge the CFs: sustaining and transferring loads to enhance the overall load-bearing ability and furthermore, incorporating CNTs pullout that resembles the intrinsic toughening at the molecular to nanoscale and strain delocalization, crack branching, and crack deflection as the extrinsic toughening at the microscale. These constitute a new effective and efficient strategy to develop simultaneously strong and tough composites through abstracting and implenting novel bioinspired structures, which contributes to addressing the long-standingly challenging attainment of both high strength and toughness for advanced structural materials.

Bottom-Up Film-to-Bulk Assembly Toward Bioinspired Bulk Structural Nanocomposites

Biological materials, although composed of meager minerals and biopolymers, often exhibit amazing mechanical properties far beyond their components due to hierarchically ordered structures. Understanding their structure-properties relationships and replicating them into artificial materials would boost the development of bulk structural nanocomposites. Layered microstructure widely exists in biological materials, serving as the fundamental structure in nanosheet-based nacres and nanofiber-based Bouligand tissues, and implying superior mechanical properties. High-efficient and scalable fabrication of bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites with precise layered microstructure is therefore important yet remains difficult. Here, one straightforward bottom-up film-to-bulk assembly strategy is focused for fabricating bioinspired layered bulk structural nanocomposites. The bottom-up assembly strategy inherently offers a methodology for precise construction of bioinspired layered microstructure in bulk form, availability for fabrication of bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites with large sizes and complex shapes, possibility for design of multiscale interfaces, feasibility for manipulation of diverse heterogeneities. Not limited to discussing what has been achieved by using the current bottom-up film-to-bulk assembly strategy, it is also envisioned how to promote such an assembly strategy to better benefit the development of bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites. Compared to other assembly strategies, the highlighted strategy provides great opportunities for creating bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites on demand.

Silk-Fabric Reinforced Silk for Artificial Bones

Bone implants for different body parts require varying mechanical properties, dimensions, and biodegradability rates. Currently, it is still challenging to produce artificial bones with perfect compatibility with human bones. In this study, a silk-fabric reinforced silk material (SFS) composed of pure silk with exceptional biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and biodegradability is reported, and demonstrates its outstanding performance as a bone implant material. The SFS is fabricated using a simple hot-pressing technique, with degummed silk fabric as the reinforcement and silk fibroin as the matrix. The SFS as a self-reinforced composite, has exceptional mechanical properties due to the almost perfect interface between the matrix and reinforcement. More importantly, its mechanical properties, biodegradability rates, and density can be tailored by adjusting the reinforcement structure and the ratio of the reinforcement to the matrix to align with the requirements for bone implantation in different parts of the human body. Besides, the SFS can improve osteoblastic proliferation and increase osteogenic activity, which is not the case with clinically used titanium alloy artificial bone. Therefore, the SFS holds significant potential to replace conventional metal or ceramic implants in the field of medical fracture repair.

Tough and Moldable Sustainable Cellulose-Based Structural Materials via Multiscale Interface Engineering

All-natural materials derived from cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are expected to be used to replace engineering plastics and have attracted much attention. However, the lack of crack extension resistance and 3D formability of nanofiber-based structural materials hinders their practical applications. Here, a multiscale interface engineering strategy is reported to construct high-performance cellulose-based materials. The sisal microfibers are surface treated to expose abundant active CNFs with positive charges, thereby enhancing their interfacial combination with the negatively charged CNFs. The robust multiscale dual network enables easy molding of multiscale cellulose-based structural materials into complex 3D special-shaped structures, resulting in nearly twofold and fivefold improvements in toughness and impact resistance compared with those of CNFs-based materials. Moreover, this multiscale interface engineering strategy endows cellulose-based structural materials with better comprehensive performance than petrochemical-based plastics and broadens cellulose's potential for lightweight applications as structural materials with lower environmental effects.

Nacre-inspired, strong, tough silk fibroin hydrogels based on biomineralization and the layer-by-layer assembly of ordered silk fabric

Hydrogels are attractive materials with structures and functional properties similar to biological tissues and widely used in biomedical engineering. However, traditional synthetic hydrogels possess poor mechanical strength, and their applications are limited. Herein, a multidimensional material design method is developed; it includes the in situ gelation of silk fabric and nacre-inspired layer-by-layer assembly, which is used to prepare silk fibroin (SF) hydrogels. The in situ gelation method of silk fabric introduces a directionally ordered fabric network in a silk substrate, considerably enhancing the strength of hydrogels. Based on the nacre structure, the layer-by-layer assembly method enables silk hydrogels to break through the size limit and increase the thickness, realizing the longitudinal extension of the hydrogels. The application of the combined biomineralization and hot pressing method can effectively reduce interface defects and improve the interaction between organic and inorganic interfaces. The multidimensional material design method helps increase the strength (287.78 MPa), toughness (18.43 MJ m-3), and fracture energy (50.58 kJ m-2) of SF hydrogels; these hydrogels can weigh 2000 times their own weight. Therefore, SF hydrogels designed using the aforementioned combined method can realize the combination of strength and toughness and be used in biological tissue engineering and structural materials.

Biomimetic, knittable aerogel fiber for thermal insulation textile

Aerogels have been considered as an ideal material for thermal insulation. Unfortunately, their application in textiles is greatly limited by their fragility and poor processability. We overcame these issues by encapsulating the aerogel fiber with a stretchable layer, mimicking the core-shell structure of polar bear hair. Despite its high internal porosity over 90%, our fiber is stretchable up to 1000% strain, which is greatly improved compared with that of traditional aerogel fibers (~2% strain). In addition to its washability and dyeability, our fiber is mechanically robust, retaining its stable thermal insulation property after 10,000 stretching cycles (100% strain). A sweater knitted with our fiber was only one-fifth as thick as down, with similar performance. Our strategy for this fiber provides rich possibilities for developing multifunctional aerogel fibers and textiles.

High-Performance Graphene Biocomposite Enabled by Fe3+ Coordination for Thermal Management

Emerging biocomposites with excellent heat dissipation capabilities and inherent sustainability are urgently needed to address the cooling issues of modern electronics and growing environmental concerns. However, the moisture stability, mechanical performance, thermal conductivity, and even flame retardancy of biomass-based materials are generally insufficient for practical thermal management applications. Herein, we present a high-performance graphene biocomposite consisting of carboxylated cellulose nanofibers and graphene nanosheets through an evaporation-induced self-assembly and subsequent Fe3+ cross-linking strategy. The Fe3+ coordination plays a critical role in stabilizing the material structure, thereby improving the mechanical strength and water stability of the biocomposite films, and its effect is revealed by density functional theory calculations. The hierarchical structure of the biocomposite films also leads to a high in-plane thermal conductivity of 42.5 W m-1 K-1, enabling a superior heat transfer performance. Furthermore, the resultant biocomposite films exhibit outstanding Joule heating performance with a fast thermal response and long-term stability, improved thermal stability, and flame retardancy. Therefore, such a general strategy and the desired overall properties of the biocomposite films offer wide application prospects for functional and safe thermal management.

Graphene oxide nanosheets augment silk fibroin aerogels for enhanced water stability and oil adsorption

Nanocomposite aerogels exhibit high porosity and large interfacial surface areas, enabling enhanced chemical transport and reactivity. Such mesoporous architectures can be prepared by freeze-casting naturally-derived biopolymers such as silk fibroin, but often form mechanically weak structures that degrade in water, which limits their performance under ambient conditions. Adding 2D material fillers such as graphene oxide (GO) or transition metal carbides (e.g. MXene) could potentially reinforce these aerogels via stronger intermolecular interactions with the polymeric binder. Here, we show that freeze-casting of GO nanosheets with silk fibroin results in a highly water-stable, mechanically robust aerogel, with considerably enhanced properties relative to silk-only or silk-MXene aerogels. These silk-GO aerogels exhibit high contact angles with water and are highly water stable. Moreover, aerogels can adsorb up 25-35 times their mass in oil, and can be used robustly for selective oil separation from water. This increased stability may occur due to strengthened intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding, despite the random coil and α-helix conformation of silk fibroin, which is typically more soluble in water. Finally, we show these aerogels can be prepared at scale by freeze-casting on a copper mesh. Ultimately, we envision that these multicomponent aerogels could be widely utilized for molecular separations and environmental sensing, as well as for thermal insulation and electrical conductivity.

Biomimetic Silk Architectures Outperform Animal Horns in Strength and Toughness

Structural biomimicry is an intelligent approach for developing lightweight, strong, and tough materials (LSTMs). Current fabrication technologies, such as 3D printing and two-photon lithography often face challenges in constructing complex interlaced structures, such as the sinusoidal crossed herringbone structure that contributes to the ultrahigh strength and fracture toughness of the dactyl club of peacock mantis shrimps. Herein, bioinspired LSTMs with laminated or herringbone structures is reported, by combining textile processing and silk fiber "welding" techniques. The resulting biomimetic silk LSTMs (BS-LSTMs) exhibit a remarkable combination of lightweight with a density of 0.6-0.9 g cm-3 , while also being 1.5 times stronger and 16 times more durable than animal horns. These findings demonstrate that BS-LSTMs are among the toughest natural materials made from silk proteins. Finite element simulations further reveal that the fortification and hardening of BS-LSTMs arise primarily from the hierarchical organization of silk fibers and mechanically transferable meso-interfaces. This study highlights the rational, cost-effective, controllable mesostructure, and transferable strategy of integrating textile processing and fiber "welding" techniques for the fabrication of BS-LSTMs with advantageous structural and mechanical properties. These findings have significant implications for a wide range of applications in biomedicine, mechanical engineering, intelligent textiles, aerospace industries, and beyond.

Hierarchical Cellulose Aerogel Reinforced with In Situ-Assembled Cellulose Nanofibers for Building Cooling

The development of new structural materials for passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) of buildings will significantly reduce global building energy consumption. Cellulose aerogels are potential PDRC materials for building cooling, but the cooling performance and mechanical strength of cellulose aerogels are considered as challenges for their practical applications. Herein, a bio-inspired hierarchically structured cellulose aerogel (HSCA) was fabricated through an assembly strategy assisted by a high-voltage electrostatic field. The HSCA possesses outstanding PDRC performance and moderate mechanical strength owing to aligned hierarchical porous network microstructures reinforced with in situ-assembled crystalline cellulose nanofibers. Promisingly, the HSCA achieves a max cooling temperature of 7.2 °C and exhibits 1.9 MPa axial compressive strength. There was no significant cooling performance degradation after the hydrophobically modified HSCA was placed outdoors for 3 months. A simulation of potential cooling energy savings shows that by using HSCA as the building envelopes (side wall and roof), it can save 52.7% of cooling energy compared to the building baseline consumption. This new strategy opens up the possibility of developing advanced functionally regenerated cellulose aerogel, which is expected to provide a revolutionary improvement in aerogel materials for building cooling.

Bioinspired Hemostatic Strategy via Pulse Ejections for Severe Bleeding Wounds

Efficient hemostasis during emergency trauma with massive bleeding remains a critical challenge in prehospital settings. Thus, multiple hemostatic strategies are critical for treating large bleeding wounds. In this study, inspired by bombardier beetles to eject toxic spray for defense, a shape-memory aerogel with an aligned microchannel structure was proposed, employing thrombin-carrying microparticles loaded as a built-in engine to generate pulse ejections for enhanced drug permeation. Bioinspired aerogels, after contact with blood, can rapidly expand inside the wound, offering robust physical barrier blocking, sealing the bleeding wound, and generating a spontaneous local chemical reaction causing an explosive-like generation of CO₂ microbubbles, which provide propulsion thrust to accelerate burst ejection from arrays of microchannels for deeper and faster drug diffusion. The ejection behavior, drug release kinetics, and permeation capacity were evaluated using a theoretical model and experimentally demonstrated. This novel aerogel showed remarkable hemostatic performance in severely bleeding wounds in a swine model and demonstrated good degradability and biocompatibility, displaying great potential for clinical application in humans.

Sustainable, Insoluble, and Photonic Cellulose Nanocrystal Patches for Calcium Ion Sensing in Sweat

Self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is invaluable for the development of sustainable optics and photonics. However, the functional failure of CNC-derived materials in humid or liquid environments inevitably impairs their development in biomedicine, membrane separation, environmental monitoring, and wearable devices. Here, a facile and robust method to fabricate insoluble hydrogels in a self-assembled CNC-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) system is reported. Due to the reconstruction of inter- or intra-molecular hydrogen bond interactions, thermal dehydration makes an optimized CNC/PVA photonic film form a stable hydrogel network in an aqueous solution rather than dissolve. Notably, the resulting hydrogel exhibits superb mechanical performance (stress up to 3.3 Mpa and tough up to 0.73 MJ m^-3 ) and reversible conversion between dry and wet states, enabling it convenient for specific functionalization. Sodium alginate (SA) can be adsorbed into the CNC photonic structure by swelling dry CNC/PVA film in a SA solution. The prepared hydrogel showcases the comprehensive properties of freezing resistance (-20°C), strong adhesion, satisfactory biocompatibility, and highly sensitive and selective Ca²⁺ sensing. The material could act as a portable wearable patch on the skin for the continuous analysis of calcium trends during different physical exercises, facilitating their development in precision nutrition and health monitoring.

Fabrication of Silk Hydrogel Scaffolds with Aligned Porous Structures and Tunable Mechanical Properties

The effectiveness of cell culture and tissue regeneration largely depends on the structural and physiochemical characteristics of tissue-engineering scaffolds. Hydrogels are frequently employed in tissue engineering because of their high-water content and strong biocompatibility, making them the ideal scaffold materials for simulating tissue structures and properties. However, hydrogels created using traditional methods have low mechanical strength and a non-porous structure, which severely restrict their application. Herein, we successfully developed silk fibroin glycidyl methacrylate (SF-GMA) hydrogels with oriented porous structures and substantial toughness through directional freezing (DF) and in situ photo-crosslinking (DF-SF-GMA). The oriented porous structures in the DF-SF-GMA hydrogels were induced by directional ice templates and maintained after photo-crosslinking. The mechanical properties, particularly the toughness, of these scaffolds were enhanced compared to the traditional bulk hydrogels. Interestingly, the DF-SF-GMA hydrogels exhibit fast stress relaxation and variable viscoelasticity. The remarkable biocompatibility of the DF-SF-GMA hydrogels was further demonstrated in cell culture. Accordingly, this work reports a method to prepare tough SF hydrogels with aligned porous structures, which can be extensively applied to cell culture and tissue engineering.

Freeze-casting osteochondral scaffolds: The presence of a nutrient-permeable film between the bone and cartilage defect reduces cartilage regeneration

Microfracture treatment that is basically relied on stem cells and growth factors in bone marrow has achieved a certain progress for cartilage repair in clinic. Nevertheless, the neocartilage generated from the microfracture strategy is limited endogenous regeneration and prone to fibrosis due to the influences of cell inflammation and vascular infiltration. To explore the crucial factor for articular cartilage remodeling, here we design a trilaminar osteochondral scaffold with a selective permeable film in middle isolation layer which can prevent stem cells, immune cells, and blood vessels in the bone marrow from invading into the cartilage layer, but allow the nutrients and cytokines to penetrate. Our findings show that the trilaminar scaffold exhibits a good biocompatibility and inflammatory regulation, but the osteochondral repair is far less effective than the control of double-layer scaffold without isolation layer. These results demonstrate that it is not adequate to rely only on nutrients and cytokines to promote reconstruction of articular cartilage, and the various cells in bone marrow are indispensable. Consequently, the current study illustrates that cell infiltration involving stem cells, immune cells and other cells from bone marrow plays a crucial role in articular cartilage remodeling based on the integrated scaffold strategy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Clinical microfracture treatment plays a certain role on the restoration of injured cartilage, but the regenerative cartilage is prone to be fibrocartilage due to the modulation of bone marrow cells. Herein, we design a trilaminar osteochondral scaffold with a selective permeable film in middle isolation layer. This specific film made of dense electrospun nanofiber can prevent bone marrow cells from invading into the cartilage layer, but allow the nutrients and cytokines to penetrate. Our conclusion is that the cartilage remodeling will be extremely inhibited when the bone marrow cells are blocking. Owing to the diverse cells in bone marrow, we will further explore the influence of each cell type on cartilage repair in our continuous future work.

Isotropically Ultrahigh Thermal Conductive Polymer Composites by Assembling Anisotropic Boron Nitride Nanosheets into a Biaxially Oriented Network

The demand for thermally conductive but electrically insulating materials has increased greatly in advanced electronic packaging. To this end, polymer-based composites filled with boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been intensively studied as thermal interface material (TIM). However, it remains a great challenge to achieve isotropically ultrahigh thermal conductivity in BN/polymer composites due to the inherent thermal property anisotropy of BN nanosheets and/or the insufficient construction of the 3D thermal conductive network. Herein, we present a high-performance BN/polymer composite with a biaxially oriented thermal conductive network by a dendritic ice template. The composite exhibits both ultrahigh in-plane (∼39.0 W m^-1 K^-1) and through-plane thermal conductivity (∼11.5 W m^-1 K^-1) at 80 vol % BN loading, largely exceeding those of reported BN/polymer composites. In addition, our composite as a TIM shows higher cooling efficiency than that of commercial TIM with up to 15 °C reduction of the chip temperature and retains good thermal stability even after 1000 heating/cooling cycles. Our strategy represents an effective approach for developing advanced thermal interface materials, which are greatly demanded for advanced electronics and emerging areas like wearable electronics.

Scalable Fabrication of High-Performance Bulk Nacre-Mimetic Materials on a Nanogrooved Surface

The extraordinary structural and mechanical features of nacre have been widely explored and translated into synthetic layered materials through various methods. However, it still remains challenging to achieve scale-up fabrication of these biomimetic layered materials, which is the main hurdle for their real applications. Herein, we report a facile, universal, and scalable strategy to produce bulk materials with nacre-mimetic architecture and performance. This was realized by the ordered nucleation of ice crystals on a nanogrooved surface. After the infiltration of a polymer, both the specific strength and toughness of our artificial nacre outperform those of natural nacre and other nacre-mimetic materials. Due to the scalability and availability of a nanogrooved surface, large-sized, bulk artificial nacre (30 × 20 × 5 cm) was also obtained through the directional freezing process. In addition, this efficient approach can also be extended to assemble various building blocks like functional nanomaterials such as graphene oxide and MXene nanosheets into bulk porous materials with highly ordered three-dimensional architecture, holding great potential for multifunctional applications.
