Ampk-mediated regulation of cardiac energy metabolism: Implications for thermotolerance in Argopecten irradians irradians

AMPK is a key regulator of metabolism in eukaryotes across various pathways related to energy regulation. Although extensive investigations of AMPK have been conducted in mammals and some model organisms, research on AMPK in scallops is comparatively limited. In this study, three AMPK family genes (AiAMPKα, AiAMPKβ and AiAMPKγ) in scallop Argopecten irradians irradians were identified through genome scanning. Structure prediction and phylogenetic analyses of AiAMPKs were performed to determine their structural features and evolutionary relationships. Spatiotemporal expression patterns of AiAMPKs at different developmental stages and in healthy adult tissues were analyzed to elucidate the function of AiAMPKs in bay scallops' growth and development. The spatiotemporally specific expression of AiAMPKs implied their important roles in growth and development of bay scallops. Heat stress experiment was performed to determine the regulations of AiAMPKs in four kinds of thermosensitive tissues. Expression profiles revealed distinct molecular mechanisms of AiAMPKs in different tissues in response to heat stress: significant down-regulations in mobile hemocytes, but dominant up-regulations occurring in stationary gills, mantles and hearts. Functional verification including knock-down of AiAMPKα and inhibition of AiAMPK was separately conducted in the thermotolerant tissue heart at the post-transcription and translation levels. The thermotolerant index Arrhenius break temperature (ABT) showed a significant decrease and the rate-amplitude product (RAP) peaked earlier in the individuals after RNAi targeting AiAMPKα, displaying an earlier transition to anaerobic metabolism under heat stress, indicating an impairing ability of aerobic metabolism. After AiAMPK inhibition, widespread down-regulations of genes in key energy metabolism pathways, RNA polymerase II-mediated transcription, and aminoacyl-tRNA synthesis pathways were obviously observed, revealing the post-translational inhibition of AiAMPK hindered cardiac energy metabolism, basal transcription and translation. Overall, our findings provide evidences for exploring the molecular mechanisms of energy regulation in thermotolerant traits in bay scallops under ongoing global warming.

Responses of the mesozooplankton community to marine heatwaves: Challenges and solutions based on a long-term time series

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are extreme weather events that have major impacts on the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems worldwide. Due to anthropogenic climate change, the occurrence of MHWs is predicted to increase in future. There is already evidence linking MHWs with reductions in biodiversity and incidence of mass mortality events in coastal ecosystems. However, because MHWs are unpredictable, the quantification of their effects on communities is challenging. Here, we use the Helgoland Roads long-term time series (German Bight, North Sea), one of the richest marine time series in the world, and implement a modified before-after control-impact (BACI) design to evaluate MHW effect on mesozooplankton communities. Mesozooplankton play an essential role in connecting primary producers to higher trophic levels, and any changes in their community structure could have far-reaching impacts on the entire ecosystem. The responses of mesozooplankton community to MHWs in terms of community structure and densities occurred mainly in spring and autumn. Abundances of seven taxa, including some of the most abundant groups (e.g. copepods), were affected either positively or negatively in response to MHWs. In contrast, we observed no clear evidence of an impact of summer and winter MHWs; instead, the density of the most common taxa remained unchanged. Our results highlight the seasonally dependent impacts of MHWs on mesozooplankton communities and the challenges in evaluating those impacts. Long-term monitoring is an important contributor to the quantification of effects of MHWs on natural populations.

Global warming and coastal protected areas: A study on phytoplankton abundance and sea surface temperature in different regions of the Brazilian South Atlantic Coastal Ocean

In this study, we examined the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and phytoplankton abundance in coastal regions of the Brazilian South Atlantic: São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina, and the Protection Area of Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in Santa Catarina (APA), a conservation zone established along 130 km of coastline. Using SST and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) data from 2002 to 2023, we found significant differences in SST between the regions, with São Paulo having the highest SST, followed by Paraná and Santa Catarina. All locations showed a consistent increase in SST over the years, with North Santa Catarina, APA and São Paulo experiencing the lowest rate of increase. Correlation analyses between SST and Chl-a revealed a stronger inverse relationship in North Santa Catarina and APA, indicating an increased response of Chl-a to SST variations in this region. The presence of protected area appears to play an essential role in reducing the negative impacts of increasing SST. Specifically, while there is a wealth of research on the consequences of global warming on diverse coastal and oceanic areas, heterogeneity among different settings persists and the causes for this necessitating attention. Our findings have implications for both localized scientific approaches and broader climate policies, emphasizing the importance of considering coastal ecosystem resilience to climate change in future conservation and adaptation strategies.

Transcriptomic analysis reveals PC4's participation in thermotolerance of scallop Argopecten irradians irradians by regulating myocardial bioelectric activity

Rising ocean temperatures due to global warming pose a significant threat to the bay scallop aquaculture industry. Understanding the mechanisms of thermotolerance in bay scallops is crucial for developing thermotolerant breeds. Our prior research identified Arg0230340.1, part of the positive cofactor 4 (PC4) family, as a key gene associated with the thermotolerance index Arrhenius break temperature (ABT) in bay scallops. Further validation through RNA interference (RNAi) reinforced PC4's role in thermotolerance, offering a solid basis for investigating thermal response mechanisms in these scallops. In this study, we performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis on the temperature-sensitive hearts of bay scallops after siRNA-mediated RNAi targeting Arg0230340.1, to delve into the detailed molecular mechanism of PC4's participation in thermotolerance regulation. The analysis revealed that silencing Arg0230340.1 significantly reduced the expression of mitochondrial tRNA and rRNA, potentially affecting mitochondrial function and the heart's blood supply capacity. Conversely, the up-regulation of genes involved in energy metabolism, RNA polymerase II (RNAPII)-mediated basal transcription, and aminoacyl-tRNA synthesis pathways points to an intrinsic protective response, providing energy and substrates for damage repair and maintenance of essential functions under stress. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses indicated that the up-regulated genes were primarily associated with energy metabolism and spliceosome pathways, likely contributing to myocardial remodeling post-Arg0230340.1 knockdown. Down-regulated genes were enriched in ion channel pathways, particularly those for Na+, K+, and Ca2+ channels, whose dysfunction could disrupt normal myocardial bioelectric activity. The impaired cardiac performance resulting from RNAi targeting Arg0230340.1 reduced the cardiac workload in scallop hearts, thus affecting myocardial oxygen consumption and thermotolerance. We propose a hypothetical mechanism where PC4 down-regulation impairs cardiac bioelectric activity, leading to decreased thermotolerance in bay scallops, providing theoretical guidance for breeding thermotolerant scallop varieties and developing strategies for sustainable aquaculture in the face of long-term environmental changes.

Biodiversity patterns of epipelagic copepods in the South Pacific Ocean: Strengths and limitations of current data bases

Basin-scale patterns of biodiversity for zooplankton in the ocean may provide valuable insights for understanding the impact of climate change and global warming on the marine ecosystem. However, studies on this topic remain scarce or unavailable in vast regions of the world ocean, particularly in large regions where the amount and quality of available data are limited. In this study, we used a 27-year (1993-2019) database on species occurrence of planktonic copepods in the South Pacific, along with associated oceanographic variables, to examine their spatial patterns of biodiversity in the upper 200 m of the ocean. The aim of this study was to identify ecological regions and the environmental predictors explaining such patterns. It was found that hot and cold spots of diversity, and distinctive species assemblages were linked to major ocean currents and large regions over the basin, with increasing species richness over the subtropical areas on the East and West sides of the South Pacific. While applying the spatial models, we showed that the best environmental predictors for diversity and species composition were temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a concentration, oxygen concentration, and the residual autocorrelation. Nonetheless, the observed spatial patterns and derived environmental effects were found to be strongly influenced by sampling coverage over space and time, revealing a highly under-sampled basin. Our findings provide an assessment of copepods diversity patterns and their potential drivers for the South Pacific Ocean, but they also stress the need for strengthening the data bases of planktonic organisms, as they can act as suitable indicators of ecosystem response to climate change at basin scale.

Spatial distribution of the range-expanding species Seriola fasciata (Bloch, 1793) in Mediterranean Sea: From past to future

The Mediterranean Sea is a highly susceptible area to climate change, that facilitates the introduction of warm-affinity exotic species, contributing to the expansion of their biogeographical range. One such thermophilic species is the Atlantic fish Seriola fasciata, which has colonised this area over the past three decades. The present study analyzed its spatial distribution in the Mediterranean Sea to identify aggregation areas and dynamics over time, and the environmental predictors influencing its presence. The utilized statistical tools and the Species Distribution Model proved effective in identifying specific spatial and temporal distribution patterns, as well as discerning some environmental variables influencing the species presence, with distinctions recorded between juveniles and adults. S. fasciata was observed to be established in the central Mediterranean, with Fishing Aggregating Devices potentially influencing its presence, particularly of juveniles. Sea floor temperature and habitats emerged as the primary factors driving species distribution. An aggregation area in the Levant Sea, conducive mainly for the adults, was identified and is expected to intensify over time. These findings contribute valuable insights into a relatively understudied species and its presence in the Mediterranean Sea, where climate change is affecting marine biodiversity.

Identifying the spatial pattern and the drivers of the decline in the eastern English Channel chlorophyll-a surface concentration over the last two decades

It has been established from previous studies that chlorophyll-a surface concentration has been declining in the eastern English Channel. This decline has been attributed to a decrease in nutrient concentrations in the rivers. However, the decrease in river discharge could also be a cause. In our study, rivers outflows and in-situ data have been compared to time series of satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentrations. Dynamic Linear Model has been used to extract the dynamic and seasonally adjusted trends of several environmental variables. The results showed that, for the 1998-2019 period, chlorophyll-a levels stayed significantly lower than average and satellite images revealed a coast to offshore gradient. Chlorophyll-a concentration of coastal stations appeared to be related to the declining fluxes of phosphate while offshore stations were more related to nitrate-nitrite. Therefore, we can exclude that the climate variability, through river flows alone, has a dominant effect on the decline of chlorophyll-a concentration.

Fish shrinking, energy balance and climate change

A decline in size is increasingly recognised as a major response by ectothermic species to global warming. Mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are poorly understood but could include changes in energy balance of consumers, driven by declines in prey size coupled with increased energy demands due to warming. The sardine Sardina pilchardus is a prime example of animal shrinking, European populations of this planktivorous fish are undergoing profound decreases in body condition and adult size. This is apparently a bottom-up effect coincident with a shift towards increased reliance on smaller planktonic prey. We investigated the hypothesis that foraging on smaller prey would lead to increased rates of energy expenditure by sardines, and that such expenditures would be exacerbated by warming temperature. Using group respirometry we measured rates of energy expenditure indirectly, as oxygen uptake, by captive adult sardines offered food of two different sizes (0.2 or 1.2 mm items) when acclimated to two temperatures (16 °C or 21 °C). Energy expenditure during feeding on small items was tripled at 16 °C and doubled at 21 °C compared to large items, linked to a change in foraging mode between filter feeding on small or direct capture of large. This caused daily energy expenditure to increase by ~10 % at 16 °C and ~40 % at 21 °C on small items, compared to large items at 16 °C. These results support that declines in prey size coupled with warming could influence energy allocation towards life-history traits in wild populations. This bottom-up effect could partially explain the shrinking and declining condition of many small pelagic fish populations and may be contributing to the shrinking of other fish species throughout the marine food web. Understanding how declines in prey size can couple with warming to affect consumers is a crucial element of projecting the consequences for marine fauna of ongoing anthropogenic global change.

Contrasting effects of river inflow and seawater intrusion on zooplankton community structure in Jiaozhou bay, the Yellow Sea

Environmental changes associated with river inflow and seawater intrusion are known to affect zooplankton communities in coastal systems, but how zooplankton respond to these environmental changes remains unclear at present. Here we explored the effects of river inflow and seawater intrusion on zooplankton community structure in Jiaozhou Bay. The results showed that the river inflow and seawater intrusion are key in driving zooplankton dynamics, but with contrasting effects. According to the distinct hydrographic conditions, the sampling area could be geographically divided into the river inflow area with low-salinity and high-nutrient conditions (i.e., EIZ) and the seawater intrusion zone with high-salinity and low-nutrient conditions (i.e., SIZ). There were significant differences in zooplankton communities (e.g., abundance and species composition) between the two regions with seasonal changes. For example, the zooplankton abundance was significantly higher in the SIZ than in the EIZ during spring, whereas an opposite pattern was observed for the summer season. In contrast, the species richness was higher in the EIZ than in the SIZ in spring, while an opposite variation trend was observed during summer. These results together suggested that the river inflow and seawater intrusion had contrasting effects on zooplankton community structure in different seasons. According to the canonical correspondence analysis, we observed that the zooplankton community structure was mainly driven by temperature, chlorophyll a (Chl a), and nutrients in the EIZ, but it was largely affected by salinity in the SIZ. The implication is that changes in temperature, Chl a, and nutrients as a result of river inflow and changes in salinity as a consequence of seawater intrusion are key in driving the dynamics of zooplankton communities in Jiaozhou Bay.

Potential impacts of climate change on the distribution of echinoderms in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

To detect potential impacts of climate change on the distribution of common echinoderm species in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS), species distribution models (SDMs) were applied. Ensemble SDMs were constructed and were in good model performance for six of the eight selected common echinoderm species. Under future climate scenarios, the brittle stars Ophiopholis mirabilis, Amphioplus depressus and the sea cucumber Protankyra bidentata were projected to expand in the southwestern areas of the YS, the ECS, and the coastal areas of the YS and ECS, respectively; the brittle stars Stegophiura sladeni, Amphiura digitula and Amphiura vadicola will likely contract their ranges in the south distribution areas and expand in the north, showing a northward movement trend. Temperature was the most important environmental variable influencing the distribution of the latter three echinoderms. Our findings will improve our understanding of the impacts of climate change on marine species distributions.

Investigating Population-Level Toxicity of the Antidepressant Citalopram in Harpacticoid Copepods Using In Vivo Methods and Bioenergetics-Based Population Modeling

Recent research has revealed various lethal and sublethal effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram hydrobromide on the harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes. In the present study, an individual-based model (IBM) grounded in the dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory was developed to extrapolate said effects to the population level. Using a generic DEB-IBM as a template, the model was designed to be as simple as possible, keeping model components that are outside the scope of the core DEB theory to a minimum. To test the model, a 56-day population experiment was performed at 0, 100, and 1000 μg citalopram hydrobromide L^-1 . In the experiment, the populations quickly reached a plateau in the control and at 100 μg L^-1 , which was correctly reproduced by the model and could be explained by food limitations hindering further population growth. At 1000 μg L^-1 , a clear mismatch occurred: Whereas in the experiment the population size increased beyond the supposed (food competition-induced) capacity, the model predicted a suppression of the population size. It is assumed that the IBM still misses important components addressing population density-regulating processes. Particularly crowding effects may have played an important role in the population experiment and should be further investigated to improve the model. Overall, the current DEB IBM for N. spinipes should be seen as a promising starting point for bioenergetics-based copepod population modeling, which-with further improvements-may become a valuable individual-to-population extrapolation tool in the future. Modeling present and future distribution of plankton populations in a coastal upwelling zone: the copepod Calanus chilensis as a study case

Predicting species distribution in the ocean has become a crucial task to assess marine ecosystem responses to ongoing climate change. In the Humboldt Current System (HCS), the endemic copepod Calanus chilensis is one of the key species bioindicator of productivity and water masses. Here we modeled the geographic distribution of Calanus chilensis for two bathymetric ranges, 0-200 and 200-400 m. For the 0-200 m layer, we used the Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) method, whereas, for the 200-400 m layer, we used the Ensembles of Small Models (ESMs) method and then projected the models into two future scenarios to assess changes in geographic distribution patterns. The models were evaluated using the multi-metric approach. We identified that chlorophyll-a (0.34), Mixed Layer Depth (0.302) and salinity (0.36) explained the distribution of C. chilensis. The geographic prediction of the BART model revealed a continuous distribution from Ecuador to the southernmost area of South America for the 0-200 m depth range, whereas the ESM model indicated a discontinuous distribution with greater suitability for the coast of Chile for the 200-400 m depth range. A reduction of the distribution range of C. chilensis is projected in the future. Our study suggests that the distribution of C. chilensis is conditioned by productivity and mesoscale processes, with both processes closely related to upwelling intensity. These models serve as a tool for proposing indicators of changes in the ocean. We further propose that the species C. chilensis is a high productivity and low salinity indicator at the HCS. We recommend further examining multiple spatial and temporal scales for stronger inference.

The spectral color of natural and anthropogenic time series and its impact on the statistical significance of cross correlation

The cross-correlation between time series is a common tool to study and quantify the impact of climatic and anthropogenic changes on ecosystems. The traditional method for estimating the statistical significance of correlation relies on the assumption that the data are independent, but time series found in nature are often strongly auto-correlated because of low-frequency environmental variability and ecosystem inertia. Previous authors have used Monte Carlo simulations to study the impact of serial auto-correlation on the significance of cross-correlations. Most studies have used random time series that are often a poor representation of those found in nature, e.g., low-order auto-regressive models with normally distributed noise. Moreover, we are not aware of any tests of the applicability of those methods to anthropogenic time series. Here, we study the effect of serial auto-correlation on the performance of two methods for estimating the significance of cross-correlations determined from Monte Carlo simulations with time series that are generated synthetically based on power-law specification of spectral characteristics. Such time series have an auto-correlation structure defined by a single parameter, their spectral "color", and are generally more convenient representations of natural time series than the autoregressive models. Our results show that one of the two methods considered here accurately reproduces prescribed error rates for the wide range of spectral colors representative of climatic, ecological and anthropogenic time series. For this, we characterized roughly 1800 observational records in different categories of spectral colors, including climate variability, abundance of vertebrate species, and pollution. We specifically focus on time series with annual sampling over data records of at least 40 years, which are particularly relevant for climate studies. The methodology advocated in this study provides a simple and realistic assessment of the significance of sample estimates of cross correlation for time series with any sample interval and record length.

A millimeter-scale insight into formation mechanism of lacustrine black shale in tephra deposition background

To reveal the role of tephra in the deposition of black shale during periods of volcanic activity, we performed lithostratigraphic and geochemical analyses on 14 horizontally sliced samples drilled from a 2-cm-thick black shale interval in the lower Ch7 Member of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation, southern Ordos Basin. Results indicate that fewer plankton is preserved during tephra deposition than during periods of volcanic quiescence. With the decrease of volcanic activities and tephra deposition, the abundance of redox-sensitive trace elements (RSTEs) and biolimiting elements increases, while terrigenous elements gradually decrease, resulting in the improvement of organic matter (OM) preservation. Paleoenvironmental proxies suggest that the climate during the Late Triassic was generally warm and humid. However, subsequent intense volcanic eruptions may have caused climatic cooling that affected the water column, resulting in enhanced salinity, primary production, water stratification, and bottom water anoxia, leading to enhanced organic carbon production and preservation. Primary productivity and redox conditions controlled the accumulation of organic carbon. Although physical and chemical reactions relating to the deposition of tephra into water are short-lived, climate change induced by volcanic eruptions is the critical cause of black shale formation.

Relationship of the Warming of Red Sea Surface Water over 140 Years with External Heat Elements

Using historic data, variations in the sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface air temperature, and air–sea heat flux of the Red Sea and its adjacent seas over 140 years (1876–2019) as well as correlations of these variations were statistically analyzed. The results show that the SST of the Red Sea increased at a mean rate of 0.043 °C/decade in these years with an accelerated rate in recent decades, and the SST anomalies of the sea had significant positive correlations and high synchronisms with those of adjacent seas as well as air temperature anomalies. In this period, the Red Sea lost more heat to the air via evaporation due to water warming and gained more heat from the Gulf of Aden. The analysis revealed that the temperature rise in the Red Sea surface water was directly caused by the horizontal heat input from the upper warming water of the Gulf of Aden under the circumstance of global ocean warming, rather than by the rise in local air temperature. However, in recent decades, the accelerated rise in air temperature over the sea has decreased the sensible heat flux, which might contribute to the Red Sea warming.

Tissue-Specific and Time-Dependent Expressions of PC4s in Bay Scallop (Argopecten irradians irradians) Reveal Function Allocation in Thermal Response

Transcriptional coactivator p15 (PC4) encodes a structurally conserved but functionally diverse protein that plays crucial roles in RNAP-II-mediated transcription, DNA replication and damage repair. Although structures and functions of PC4 have been reported in most vertebrates and some invertebrates, the PC4 genes were less systematically identified and characterized in the bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians. In this study, five PC4 genes (AiPC4s) were successfully identified in bay scallops via whole-genome scanning through in silico analysis. Protein structure and phylogenetic analyses of AiPC4s were conducted to determine the identities and evolutionary relationships of these genes. Expression levels of AiPC4s were assessed in embryos/larvae at all developmental stages, in healthy adult tissues and in different tissues (mantles, gills, hemocytes and hearts) being processed under 32 °C stress with different time durations (0 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 3 d, 6 d and 10 d). Spatiotemporal expression profiles of AiPC4s suggested the functional roles of the genes in embryos/larvae at all developmental stages and in healthy adult tissues in bay scallop. Expression regulations (up- and down-) of AiPC4s under high-temperature stress displayed both tissue-specific and time-dependent patterns with function allocations, revealing that AiPC4s performed differentiated functions in response to thermal stress. This work provides clues of molecular function allocation of PC4 in scallops in response to thermal stress and helps in illustrating how marine bivalves resist elevated seawater temperature.

Dynamics of helminth fauna of black-legged kittiwake in the Russian Arctic in the context of climate changes

We present the results of our studies of the helminth fauna and the diet of the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gorodetskiy bird colonies on the Rybachiy Peninsula (Murman coast of the Barents Sea) carried out in 2006-2008 and in 2018-2020. We did not find any noticeable changes in the species diversity of the helminth fauna of the kittiwakes, the proportion of the dominant parasite species and the values of most quantitative infection indices between the two study periods. At the same time, there was a marked decrease in the mean abundance of the dominant cestode species (Alcataenia larina Krabbe, 1869 and Tetrabothrius erostris Loennberg, 1889) in 2018-2020 as compared to 2006-2008. The changes in parasitology of birds found in our study appear to be largely determined by fluctuations of abiotic conditions (increased water and air temperature) and the state of the food supply (size structure of the zooplankton) in the study area.

An integrated multiple driver mesocosm experiment reveals the effect of global change on planktonic food web structure

Global change puts coastal marine systems under pressure, affecting community structure and functioning. Here, we conducted a mesocosm experiment with an integrated multiple driver design to assess the impact of future global change scenarios on plankton, a key component of marine food webs. The experimental treatments were based on the RCP 6.0 and 8.5 scenarios developed by the IPCC, which were Extended (ERCP) to integrate the future predicted changing nutrient inputs into coastal waters. We show that simultaneous influence of warming, acidification, and increased N:P ratios alter plankton dynamics, favours smaller phytoplankton species, benefits microzooplankton, and impairs mesozooplankton. We observed that future environmental conditions may lead to the rise of Emiliania huxleyi and demise of Noctiluca scintillans, key species for coastal planktonic food webs. In this study, we identified a tipping point between ERCP 6.0 and ERCP 8.5 scenarios, beyond which alterations of food web structure and dynamics are substantial.

Biogeography of Southern Ocean prokaryotes: a comparison of the Indian and Pacific sectors

We investigated the Southern Ocean (SO) prokaryote community structure via zero‐radius operational taxonomic unit (zOTU) libraries generated from 16S rRNA gene sequencing of 223 full water column profiles. Samples reveal the prokaryote diversity trend between discrete water masses across multiple depths and latitudes in Indian (71–99°E, summer) and Pacific (170–174°W, autumn‐winter) sectors of the SO. At higher taxonomic levels (phylum‐family) we observed water masses to harbour distinct communities across both sectors, but observed sectorial variations at lower taxonomic levels (genus‐zOTU) and relative abundance shifts for key taxa such as Flavobacteria, SAR324/Marinimicrobia, Nitrosopumilus and Nitrosopelagicus at both epi‐ and bathy‐abyssopelagic water masses. Common surface bacteria were abundant in several deep‐water masses and vice‐versa suggesting connectivity between surface and deep‐water microbial assemblages. Bacteria from same‐sector Antarctic Bottom Water samples showed patchy, high beta‐diversity which did not correlate well with measured environmental parameters or geographical distance. Unconventional depth distribution patterns were observed for key archaeal groups: Crenarchaeota was found across all depths in the water column and persistent high relative abundances of common epipelagic archaeon Nitrosopelagicus was observed in deep‐water masses. Our findings reveal substantial regional variability of SO prokaryote assemblages that we argue should be considered in wide‐scale SO ecosystem microbial modelling.

Phytoplankton dynamics based on satellite inherent optical properties and oceanographic conditions in a patagonian gulf frontal system in relation to the adjacent continental shelf waters

The dynamics of phytoplankton across a seasonal frontal system formed in San José Gulf (SJG, Patagonia Argentina) and in neighbouring shelf waters was assessed based on bio-optical satellite data (2003-2018) and spring and summer in situ samplings. Bio-optical properties of the water masses on the eastern (ED) and western (WD) domains of the seasonal frontal system of SJG showed clear differences: the year-round-vertically-mixed waters from the WD, strongly connected with the adjacent shelf waters, evidenced a brief and strong single phytoplankton bloom, while those from the ED, showing lower exchange with shelf waters and a strong vertical stratification during the warm season, displayed an earlier and long-lasting spring phytoplankton bloom, followed by a late-summer and autumn bloom, both associated with the development and erosion of the seasonal thermocline. Waters from the entire system are optically influenced by the absorption of coloured dissolved organic matter and detritus (cdom + detritus), suggesting a strong sediment load contribution from the continent and the seabed. To remark, a strong correlation between satellite chlorophyll-a (Chla-sat) and absorption by phytoplankton (aphy₄₄₃) in the outer shelf waters differs from the weak correlation of those variables in the gulf's water masses, whose optical parameters are more complex. In situ Chla records may indicate wind-driven upwelling and downwelling areas in the northern and southern coasts of the ED. Dissolved nitrogen was identified as the limiting macronutrient for phytoplankton growth in the ED during summer. This work contributes relevant ecological information that may support management actions on the SJG shellfish artisanal fishery.

Zooplankton diversity monitoring strategy for the urban coastal region using metabarcoding analysis

Marine ecosystems in urban coastal areas are exposed to many risks due to human activity. Thus, long-term and continuous monitoring of zooplankton diversity is necessary. High-throughput DNA metabarcoding has gained recognition as an efficient and highly sensitive approach to accurately describing the species diversity of marine zooplankton assemblages. In this study, we collected 30 zooplankton samples at about 2-week intervals for 1 year. Zooplankton diversity showing a typical four season pattern. Of the “total” and “common” zooplankton, we assigned 267 and 64 taxa. The cluster structure and seasonal diversity pattern were rough when only the “common” zooplankton was used. Our study examined how to maximize the benefits of metabarcoding for monitoring zooplankton diversity in urban coastal areas. The results suggest that to take full advantage of metabarcoding when monitoring a zooplankton community, it is necessary to carefully investigate potential ecosystem threats (non-indigenous species) through sufficient curation rather than disregarding low-abundance operational taxonomic units.

Reconstructing past thermal conditions in beach microclimates

Reconstruction of past conditions provides important information on how ecosystems have been impacted by climate change, but generally for microhabitats worldwide there are no long-term empirical measurements. In these cases, there has been protracted debate about how various large-scale environmental proxies can best be used to reconstruct local temperatures. Here we help resolve this debate by examining how well environmental proxies hindcast sand temperatures at nest depths for five sea turtle nesting sites across the world. We link instrumental air temperature and sea surface temperature records with empirical sand temperature observations in the Atlantic (Ascension Island and Cape Verde), the Indian Ocean (Chagos Archipelago), the Caribbean (St Eustatius) and the Pacific (French Polynesia). We found strong correlations between sea surface temperatures, air temperatures and sand temperatures at all our study sites. Furthermore, Granger causality testing shows variations in sea surface temperature and air temperature precede variations in sand temperatures. We found that different proxies (air or sea temperature or a combination of both) predicted mean monthly sand temperatures within <0.5°C of empirical observations. Reconstructions of sand temperatures over the last 170 years reveal a slight warming of temperatures (maximum 0.5°C per century). An analysis of 36 published datasets revealed that the gradient of the relationship between sand temperature and air temperature is relatively constant, suggesting long-term changes in sand temperature could be extended around the world to include nesting sites where there are no empirical measurements of sand temperature. Our approaches are likely to have utility for a range of microhabitats where there is an interest in long-term changes in temperature.

Hydrodynamics Regulate Longitudinal Plankton Community Structure in an Alpine Cascade Reservoir System

Previous studies report significant changes on biotic communities caused by cascade reservoir construction. However, factors regulating the spatial–temporal plankton patterns in alpine cascade reservoir systems have not been fully explored. The current study explored effects of environmental factors on the longitudinal plankton patterns, through a 5-year-long study on the environmental factors and communities of phytoplankton and zooplankton in an alpine cascade reservoir system located upstream of Yellow River region. The findings showed that phytoplankton and zooplankton species numbers in the studied cascade reservoir system were mainly regulated by the hydrological regime, whereas nutrient conditions did not significantly affect the number of species. Abundance and biovolume of phytoplankton in cascade reservoirs were modulated by the hydrological regime and nutrient conditions. The drainage rate, N:P ratio, and sediment content in cascade reservoirs were negatively correlated with abundance and biovolume of phytoplankton. Abundance and biovolume of zooplankton were not significantly correlated with the hydrological regime but showed a strong positive correlation with nutrient conditions in cascade reservoirs. Shannon–Wiener index (H’) and the Pielou index (J) of phytoplankton were mainly regulated by the hydrological regime factors, such as drainage rate and sediment content in cascade reservoirs. However, temperature and nutrient conditions were the main factors that regulated the Shannon–Wiener index (H’) and the Pielou index (J) of zooplankton. Species number, abundance, and biovolume of phytoplankton showed a significant positive correlation with those of zooplankton. Hydrodynamics and nutrient conditions contributed differently in regulating community structure of phytoplankton or zooplankton. These findings provide an understanding of factors that modulate longitudinal plankton community patterns in cascade reservoir systems.

Modeling mixoplankton along the biogeochemical gradient of the Southern North Sea

The ecological importance of mixoplankton within marine protist communities is slowly being recognized. However, most aquatic ecosystem models do not include formulations to model a complete protist community consisting of phytoplankton, protozooplankton and mixoplankton. We introduce PROTIST, a new module for the aquatic ecosystem modelling software Delft3D-WAQ that can model a protist community consisting of two types of phytoplankton (diatoms and green algae), two types of mixoplankton (constitutive mixoplankton and non-constitutive mixoplankton) and protozooplankton. We employed PROTIST to further explore the hypothesis that the biogeochemical gradient of inorganic nutrient and suspended sediment concentrations drives the observed occurrence of constitutive mixoplankton in the Dutch Southern North Sea. To explore this hypothesis, we used 11 1D-vertical aquatic ecosystem models that mimic the abiotic conditions of 11 routine monitoring locations in the Dutch Southern North Sea. Our models result in plausible trophic compositions across the biogeochemical gradient as compared to in-situ data. A sensitivity analysis showed that the dissolved inorganic phosphate and silica concentrations drive the occurrence of constitutive mixoplankton in the Dutch Southern North Sea.

Historical control data in ecotoxicology: Eight years of tests with the copepod Acartia tonsa

The calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa is one of the most frequently used organisms in acute, short-term bioassays to assess effects induced by marine matrices or chemicals on different life stages. Physiological responses in such tests can be highly variable and historical control data (HCD), values recorded from previous studies performed under similar conditions, can be useful to recognise the average responses over time. Here, we analysed egg hatching success and larval (naupliar) immobilisation/mortality of A. tonsa Mediterranean strain, cultured in laboratory conditions since 2008 and used as model organisms in ecotoxicology tests. Our aims were to evaluate the physiological response and sensitivity of A. tonsa over eight years of bioassays, and to compare our HCD with reference values, in order to assess the suitability of such a long-term culture for ecotoxicology studies. Acartia tonsa eggs were exposed for 48 h to the reference toxicant nickel chloride (NiCl₂) and the % of egg hatching success and naupliar viability were compared to controls. A total of 59 acute tests, displayed in Shewhart-like control charts, showed a high mean percentage of egg hatching success (85.60% ± 5.90 SD) recorded for the whole period, and a low mean percentage of naupliar immobilisation/mortality (6.73% ± 6.38 SD) in controls. Effective concentration (EC₅₀) for NiCl₂ registered a stable mean of 0.14 mg Ni/L (± 0.047 SD) over time. Overall, our long-term dataset confirms the suitability of this copepod species for ecotoxicology studies even after years of culturing in laboratory conditions. It is advisable that other laboratories with long-term datasets made their own control charts, to allow data comparison and to improve test protocols. Considering our HCD, we suggest an EC₅₀ of NiCl₂ of 0.14 ± 0.09 mg Ni/L for acute tests with the Mediterranean strain of A. tonsa.

Distribution and abundance of dinoflagellates from the coastal waters of Karachi, Pakistan, northern part of the Arabian Sea

The present study reports on seasonal and spatial variations in diversity, distribution and abundance of dinoflegellates and indicates the presence of HAB species in Pakistan waters. A total of 179 taxa, recorded in this study from offshore and near-shore waters, belong to 41 genera in 26 families and 10 orders. The high species count (149 species) was recorded from Manora Island offshore station (MI-1) and 105 spp, 109 spp and 115 spp were encountered from the Mubarak village offshore station (MV-1), Manora near shore station (MI-2) and Mubarak Village near-shore station (MV-2) respectively. Tripos furca was the dominant and frequently occurring species (> 1 x103 to > 25 x103 cells L-1 from coastal and >1x 105 cells L-l from near-shore stations) in addition to less abundant Alexandrium catenella, Alexandrium sp., Alexandrium minutum, and Prorocentrum micans (>103 to 25x 103cells/L). Another 44 species occurred in relatively low numbers (<103 cell L-l). Seventy species were found throughout the study period at all four stations. High number of species in three genera (Tripos (38), Protoperidinium (34) and Prorocentrum (20) was recorded. Potently toxic (16 genera 43 species) and HAB related (19 genera and 30 species) dinoflagellate taxa were also recorded. The percent contribution of dinoflagellates in total phytoplankton population generally remained below 20% except for a few instances. Manora Island stations had comparatively higher Shannon index and equitability and slightly lower dominance index. The PCA plot showed strong positive correlation among chlorophyll-a concentration, dissolved oxygen, total number of phytoplankton and dinoflagellates.

Perceived global increase in algal blooms is attributable to intensified monitoring and emerging bloom impacts

Global trends in the occurrence, toxicity and risk posed by harmful algal blooms to natural systems, human health and coastal economies are poorly constrained, but are widely thought to be increasing due to climate change and nutrient pollution. Here, we conduct a statistical analysis on a global dataset extracted from the Harmful Algae Event Database and Ocean Biodiversity Information System for the period 1985-2018 to investigate temporal trends in the frequency and distribution of marine harmful algal blooms. We find no uniform global trend in the number of harmful algal events and their distribution over time, once data were adjusted for regional variations in monitoring effort. Varying and contrasting regional trends were driven by differences in bloom species, type and emergent impacts. Our findings suggest that intensified monitoring efforts associated with increased aquaculture production are responsible for the perceived increase in harmful algae events and that there is no empirical support for broad statements regarding increasing global trends. Instead, trends need to be considered regionally and at the species level.

On the Breaking of the Milankovitch Cycles Triggered by Temperature Increase: The Stochastic Resonance Response

Recent decades have registered the hottest temperature variation in instrumentally recorded data history. The registered temperature rise is particularly significant in the so-called hot spot or sentinel regions, characterized by higher temperature increases in respect to the planet average value and by more marked connected effects. In this framework, in the present work, following the climate stochastic resonance model, the effects, due to a temperature increase independently from a specific trend, connected to the 105 year Milankovitch cycle were tested. As a result, a breaking scenario induced by global warming is forecasted. More specifically, a wavelet analysis, innovatively performed with different sampling times, allowed us, besides to fully characterize the cycles periodicities, to quantitatively determine the stochastic resonance conditions by optimizing the noise level. Starting from these system resonance conditions, numerical simulations for increasing planet temperatures have been performed. The obtained results show that an increase of the Earth temperature boosts a transition towards a chaotic regime where the Milankovitch cycle effects disappear. These results put into evidence the so-called threshold effect, namely the fact that also a small temperature increase can give rise to great effects above a given threshold, furnish a perspective point of view of a possible future climate scenario, and provide an account of the ongoing registered intensity increase of extreme meteorological events.

Short-term variation in abundance of four Acartia species (Copepoda, Calanoida) in a eutrophic bay

The short-term variation in the abundance of Acartia copepods in the eutrophic Gamak Bay of South Korea was investigated with weekly measurements from October 2007 to September 2008. During this period, four Acartia species (A. erythraea, A. ohtsukai, A. omorii, and A. sinjiensis) were recorded as showing seasonally different peak abundance. The abundance of A. erythraea and A. sinjiensis was high in autumn, whereas that of A. omorii was high from winter to spring. In summer, A. erythraea, A. ohtsukai, and A. sinjiensis coexisted at peak abundance significantly related to water temperature and salinity. Results from the response curves of the four Acartia species to water temperature and salinity suggest that A. erythraea and A. sinjiensis increased in abundance at water temperatures >18 °C, whereas A. ohtsukai increased in abundance at water temperatures >27 °C. The occurrence of A. erythraea, A. ohtsukai, and A. sinjiensis decreased with increasing salinity, but chlorophyll-a concentration showed no effect on occurrence. Despite these findings, the coexistence of the three ecologically similar species may be due to prey abundance in summer and autumn (chlorophyll-a concentration >10 µg L^-1). Notably, the wide range of the response curve of A. omorii indicates its occurrence at higher salinity levels than other species.

Improvements in reports of species redistribution under climate change are required

Studies have documented climate change-induced shifts in species distributions but uncertainties associated with data and methods are typically unexplored. We reviewed 240 reports of climate-related species-range shifts and classified them based on three criteria. We ask whether observed distributional shifts are compared against random expectations, whether multicausal factors are examined on equal footing, and whether studies provide sufficient documentation to enable replication. We found that only ~12.1% of studies compare distributional shifts across multiple directions, ~1.6% distinguish observed patterns from random expectations, and ~19.66% examine multicausal factors. Last, ~75.5% of studies report sufficient data and results to allow replication. We show that despite gradual improvements over time, there is scope for raising standards in data and methods within reports of climate-change induced shifts in species distribution. Accurate reporting is important because policy responses depend on them. Flawed assessments can fuel criticism and divert scarce resources for biodiversity to competing priorities.

Bayesian Network Analysis reveals resilience of the jellyfish Aurelia aurita to an Irish Sea regime shift

Robust time-series of direct observations of jellyfish abundance are not available for many ecosystems, leaving it difficult to determine changes in jellyfish abundance, the possible causes (e.g. climate change) or the consequences (e.g. trophic cascades). We sought an indirect ecological route to reconstruct jellyfish abundance in the Irish Sea: since zooplankton are jellyfish prey, historic variability in zooplankton communities may provide proxies for jellyfish abundance. We determined the Bayesian ecological network of jellyfish-zooplankton dependencies using jellyfish- and zooplankton-abundance data obtained using nets during a 2-week cruise to the Irish Sea in 2008. This network revealed that Aurelia aurita abundance was dependent on zooplankton groups Warm Temperate and Temperate Oceanic as defined by previous zooplankton ecology work. We then determined historic zooplankton networks across the Irish Sea from abundance data from Continuous Plankton Recorder surveys conducted between 1970 and 2000. Transposing the 2008 spatial dependencies onto the historic networks revealed that Aurelia abundance was more strongly dependent over time on sea surface temperature than on the zooplankton community. The generalist predatory abilities of Aurelia may have insulated this jellyfish over the 1985 regime shift when zooplankton composition in the Irish Sea changed abruptly, and also help explain its globally widespread distribution.

Phytoplankton dynamics in a subarctic fjord during the under-ice - open water transition

The spring blooms of phytoplankton play a key role in the functioning of marine ecosystems in the polar regions. A spring bloom in the Subarctic White Sea was observed in order to determine the effect of ice cover on the distribution, composition, and temporal changes of phytoplankton communities. The obtained results clearly show that in the White Sea, as in other freezing Arctic seas, ice melting and ice removal both play an essential role in the onset and development of spring phytoplankton blooms. This facilitates the release of ice algae and ice-pelagic algae into the water, as well as the rapid development of true planktonic taxa within the euphotic zone. One major peak of algal biomass is associated with ice removal while the other is recorded in the early summer. Comparison of our results with earlier data from 1960s to 1990s indicated strong year-to-year variation in terms of ice removal, the onset of the spring bloom, and the abundance and composition of the dominant phytoplankton taxa.

On the robustness of an eastern boundary upwelling ecosystem exposed to multiple stressors

The resistance of an east border upwelling system was investigated using relative index of marine pelagic biomass estimates under a changing environment spanning 20-years in the strongly exploited southern Canary Current Large marine Ecosystem (sCCLME). We divided the sCCLME in two parts (north and south of Cap Blanc), based on oceanographic regimes. We delineated two size-based groups (“plankton” and “pelagic fish”) corresponding to lower and higher trophic levels, respectively. Over the 20-year period, all spatial remote sensing environmental variables increased significantly, except in the area south of Cap Blanc where sea surface Chlorophyll-a concentrations declined and the upwelling favorable wind was stable. Relative index of marine pelagic abundance was higher in the south area compared to the north area of Cap Blanc. No significant latitudinal shift to the mass center was detected, regardless of trophic level. Relative pelagic abundance did not change, suggesting sCCLME pelagic organisms were able to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Despite strong annual variability and the presence of major stressors (overfishing, climate change), the marine pelagic ressources, mainly fish and plankton remained relatively stable over the two decades, advancing our understanding on the resistance of this east border upwelling system.

Deciphering the synergistic impact of elevated temperature and oil pollution on meiobenthic community structure: A benthocosm study

Meiobenthos has been considered as an excellent tool for biomonitoring assessment. Elevated temperature and oil pollution are considered as the most pervasive aspects of global environmental changes and matter of concern for contemporary society. Presently, very limited information is available about the synergistic effect of these stressors on meiobenthic community structure and tolerance potential from tropical intertidal environment. Here, we assessed their impacts on meiobenthic community by conducting a 60 days long benthocosm experiment selecting three sets of temperature (25°, 30° and 35 °C) and two sets of diesel oil (low and high) combinations. Gradual changes in their community composition were revealed discernibly with exposures to both the disturbances after 30 and 60 days of experimental period. Diversity profiles for the nematodes were less affected, but copepods showed a graded response of decreasing density with increasing dose of both the stressors. Other meiobenthic taxa such as halacarid mite, turbellaria and polycheate juveniles were adversely affected and eliminated from the treatments, howbeit abundance of ostracods, foraminiferans and bivalve settlers varied significantly. A 3-factor PERMANOVA indicated a significant effect of temperature, diesel, between their interaction and interaction among stressors and time on meiofaunal abundances. In case of free-living nematodes, temperature rise and diesel contamination synchronously led to an elimination of k-selected species like Halalaimus gracilis, H. longicaudatus, Oxystomina aesetosa and Pomponema sp. with a significant decrease in abundance of H. capitulatus and Oncholaimus sp. The r-selected species Daptonema invagiferoum, Sabatieria praedatrix, Theristus acer, Monhystera sp. and Thalassomonhystera sp. had endured even at high doses of diesel treatment in three different temperatures set up. The effects were evident in term of changes in life strategies with an increment of opportunistic species and increased trophic diversity of deposit feeders in treated sediments. Overall, elevated temperature together with diesel oil contamination were found to alter species dynamics within shallow intertidal meiobenthic communities, which might have significant Armageddon on benthic ecosystem functioning.

LifeWatch observatory data: phytoplankton observations in the Belgian Part of the North Sea

Background

This paper describes a phytoplankton data series generated through systematic observations in the Belgian Part of the North Sea (BPNS). Phytoplankton samples were collected during multidisciplinary sampling campaigns, visiting nine nearshore stations with monthly frequency and an additional eight offshore stations on a seasonal basis.

New information

The data series contain taxon-specific phytoplankton densities determined by analysis with the Flow Cytometer And Microscope (FlowCAM®) and associated image-based classification. The classification is performed by two separate semi-automated classification systems, followed by manual validation by taxonomic experts. To date, 637,819 biological particles have been collected and identified, yielding a large dataset of validated phytoplankton images. The collection and processing of the 2017–2018 dataset are described, along with its data curation, quality control and data storage. In addition, the classification of images using image classification algorithms, based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) from 2019 onwards, is also described. Data are published in a standardised format together with environmental parameters, accompanied by extensive metadata descriptions and finally labelled with digital identifiers for traceability. The data are published under a CC‐BY 4.0 licence, allowing the use of the data under the condition of providing the reference to the source.

Lipid metabolism in Calanus finmarchicus is sensitive to variations in predation risk and food availability

Late developmental stages of the marine copepods in the genus Calanus can spend extended periods in a dormant stage (diapause) that is preceded by the accumulation of large lipid stores. We assessed how lipid metabolism during development from the C4 stage to adult is altered in response to predation risk and varying food availability, to ultimately understand more of the metabolic processes during development in Calanus copepods. We used RNA sequencing to assess if perceived predation risk in combination with varied food availability affects expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism and diapause preparation in C. finmarchicus. The lipid metabolism response to predation risk differed depending on food availability, time and life stage. Predation risk caused upregulation of lipid catabolism with high food, and downregulation with low food. Under low food conditions, predation risk disrupted lipid accumulation. The copepods showed no clear signs of diapause preparation, supporting earlier observations of the importance of multiple environmental cues in inducing diapause in C. finmarchicus. This study demonstrates that lipid metabolism is a sensitive endpoint for the interacting environmental effects of predation pressure and food availability. As diapause may be controlled by lipid accumulation, our findings may contribute towards understanding processes that can ultimately influence diapause timing.

Effects of climate change on coastal ecosystem food webs: Implications for aquaculture

Coastal ecosystems provide important ecosystem services for millions of people. Climate change is modifying coastal ecosystem food web structure and function and threatens these essential ecosystem services. We used a combination of two new and one existing ecosystem food web models and altered scenarios that are possible with climate change to quantify the impacts of climate change on ecosystem stability in three coastal bays in Maine, United States. We also examined the impact of climate change on bivalve fisheries and aquaculture. Our modeled scenarios explicitly considered the predicted effects of future climatic change and human intervention and included: 1) the influence of increased terrestrial dissolved organic carbon loading on phytoplankton biomass; 2) benthic community change driven by synergisms between climate change, historical overfishing, and increased species invasion; and 3) altered trophic level energy transfer driven by ocean warming and acidification. The effects of climate change strongly negatively influenced ecosystem energy flow and ecosystem stability and negatively affected modeled bivalve carrying capacity in each of our models along the Maine coast of the eastern United States. Our results suggest that the interconnected nature of ecosystem food webs make them extremely vulnerable to synergistic effects of climate change. To better inform fisheries and aquaculture management, the effects of climate change must be explicitly incorporated.

Long-term changes in summer phytoplankton communities and their influencing factors in Daya Bay, China (1991-2017)

Spatial variations in summertime phytoplankton community structure from 1991 to 2017 in Daya Bay, China were investigated in this research. The abundance of total phytoplankton and diatoms significantly increased during the study period in all regions of the bay while an increase in dinoflagellates abundance was only significant in the inner and middle bay areas. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were overwhelmingly dominant followed by Skeletonema costatum. Ceratium furca was the dominant dinoflagellate. Overall, species diversity and evenness indices showed downward trends during the study period. Moreover, the bloom frequency of Scrippsiella trochoidea (associated with red tides) has increased rapidly since the 2000s in the inner bay. These temporal dynamics are largely explained by enhanced dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations, which increased by 64.58% during 2005-2017 relative to 1991-2004, induced by human activities, along with temperature reductions and salinity increases resulting from open oceanic seawater intrusion.

Environmental Gradients and Spatial Patterns of Calanoid Copepods in the Southeast Pacific

Understanding the mechanisms maintaining the biodiversity of plankton communities in marine ecosystems subject to a strongly variable ocean has become a critical issue for modern oceanography. Here, we used data on distribution of calanoid copepods in the upper layer of the ocean (0–500 m), a widely distributed taxonomic group in the pelagic realm, to assess the effects of changing oceanographic conditions on their diversity patterns and family and species richness. Copepods abundance and occurrence were evaluated from 2002 to 2015 covering the region extended between the coastal upwelling zone (CUP-Z) and the offshore region of Chile at subtropical and temperate areas. We used spatial analyses of community structure descriptors, such as abundance and diversity (family and species richness), multivariate analysis and General Additive Models (GAMS) in order to study the effect of surface temperature and its gradients, mixed layer depth, salinity and Chlorophyll-a on copepod diversity. Seventeen families were identified comprising 151 species distributed in 3 predefined zones in the onshore-offshore gradient covering the coastal upwelling, the coastal transition and the oligotrophic zones, whereas over the alongshore gradient, same families were majorly linked to the northern and southern portions of the sampled area (20–40°S). Families and species were significantly structured over the zonal gradient, revealing the dominant habitat for each of the families. Spatial patterns revealed the presence of transitional zones comprised by mixed taxa. Over the alongshore gradient this transition zone was linked to the subtropical convergence (30°S). The spatial variation of sea surface temperature (SST) revealed strong environmental zonation of temperature gradients across onshore-offshore and alongshore dimensions. Mean SST combined with mean mixed layer depth explained about 40% and about 29% of variation in family and species richness, respectively over the onshore-offshore axis. We thus conclude that the environmental zonation imposed by SST and its spatial gradients, considered as ecological barriers, is the key driver for maintaining diversity of copepods in the southeast Pacific.

In Situ Rates of Carbon and Nitrogen Uptake by Phytoplankton and the Contribution of Picophytoplankton in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard

Rapid climate warming and the associated melting of glaciers in high-latitude open fjord systems can have a significant impact on biogeochemical cycles. In this study, the uptake rates of carbon and nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) of total phytoplankton and picophytoplankton (<2 μm) were measured in Kongsfjorden in early May 2017 using the dual stable isotope technique. The daily uptake rates of total carbon and nitrogen ranged from 0.3 to 1.1 g C m−2 day−1, with a mean of 0.7 ± 0.3 g C m−2 day−1, and 0.13 to 0.17 g N m−2 day−1, with a mean of 0.16 ± 0.02 g N m−2 day−1. Microphytoplankton (20–200 μm) accounted for 68.1% of the total chlorophyll a (chl-a) concentration, while picophytoplankton (<2 μm) accounted for 19.6% of the total chl-a, with a high contribution to the carbon uptake rate (42.9%) due to its higher particulate organic carbon-to-chl-a ratio. The contributions of picophytoplankton to the total nitrogen uptake rates were 47.1 ± 10.6% for nitrate and 74.0 ± 16.7% for ammonium. Our results indicated that picophytoplankton preferred regenerated nitrogen, such as ammonium, for growth and pointed to the importance of the role played by picophytoplankton in the local carbon uptake rate during the early springtime in 2017. Although the phytoplankton community, in terms of biovolume, in all samples was dominated by diatoms and Phaeocystis sp., a higher proportion of nano- and picophytoplankton chl-a (mean ± SD = 71.3 ± 16.4%) was observed in the relatively cold and turbid surface water in the inner fjord. Phytoplankton production (carbon uptake) decreased towards the inner fjord, while nitrogen uptake increased. The contrast in carbon and nitrogen uptake is likely caused by the gradient in glacial meltwater which affects both the light regime and nutrient availability. Therefore, global warming-enhanced glacier melting might support lower primary production (carbon fixation) with higher degrees of regeneration processes in fjord systems.

Evolution of Reproduction Periods in Seasonal Environments

AbstractMany species are subject to seasonal cycles in resource availability, affecting the timing of their reproduction. Using a stage-structured consumer-resource model in which juvenile development and maturation are resource dependent, we study how a species' reproductive schedule evolves, dependent on the seasonality of its resource. We find three qualitatively different reproduction modes. First, continuous income breeding (with adults reproducing throughout the year) evolves in the absence of significant seasonality. Second, seasonal income breeding (with adults reproducing unless they are starving) evolves when resource availability is sufficiently seasonal and juveniles are more efficient resource foragers. Third, seasonal capital breeding (with adults reproducing partly through the use of energy reserves) evolves when resource availability is sufficiently seasonal and adults are more efficient resource foragers. Such capital breeders start reproduction already while their offspring are still experiencing starvation. Changes in seasonality lead to continuous transitions between continuous and seasonal income breeding, but the change between income and capital breeding involves a hysteresis pattern, such that a population's evolutionarily stable reproduction pattern depends on its initial one. Taken together, our findings show how adaptation to seasonal environments can result in a rich array of outcomes, exhibiting seasonal or continuous reproduction with or without energy reserves.

Global Trends in Marine Plankton Diversity across Kingdoms of Life

The ocean is home to myriad small planktonic organisms that underpin the functioning of marine ecosystems. However, their spatial patterns of diversity and the underlying drivers remain poorly known, precluding projections of their responses to global changes. Here we investigate the latitudinal gradients and global predictors of plankton diversity across archaea, bacteria, eukaryotes, and major virus clades using both molecular and imaging data from Tara Oceans. We show a decline of diversity for most planktonic groups toward the poles, mainly driven by decreasing ocean temperatures. Projections into the future suggest that severe warming of the surface ocean by the end of the 21^st century could lead to tropicalization of the diversity of most planktonic groups in temperate and polar regions. These changes may have multiple consequences for marine ecosystem functioning and services and are expected to be particularly significant in key areas for carbon sequestration, fisheries, and marine conservation.

Evolution, Microbes, and Changing Ocean Conditions

Experimental evolution and the associated theory are underutilized in marine microbial studies; the two fields have developed largely in isolation. Here, we review evolutionary tools for addressing four key areas of ocean global change biology: linking plastic and evolutionary trait changes, the contribution of environmental variability to determining trait values, the role of multiple environmental drivers in trait change, and the fate of populations near their tolerance limits. Wherever possible, we highlight which data from marine studies could use evolutionary approaches and where marine model systems can advance our understanding of evolution. Finally, we discuss the emerging field of marine microbial experimental evolution. We propose a framework linking changes in environmental quality (defined as the cumulative effect on population growth rate) with population traits affecting evolutionary potential, in order to understand which evolutionary processes are likely to be most important across a range of locations for different types of marine microbes.

Elevated CO2 and food ration affect growth but not the size-based hierarchy of a reef fish

Under projected levels of ocean acidification, shifts in energetic demands and food availability could interact to effect the growth and development of marine organisms. Changes to individual growth rates could then flow on to influence emergent properties of social groups, particularly in species that form size-based hierarchies. To test the potential interactive effects of (1) food availability, (2) elevated CO₂ during juvenile development, and (3) parental experience of elevated CO₂ on the growth, condition and size-based hierarchy of juvenile fish, we reared orange clownfish (Amphiprion percula) for 50 days post-hatching in a fully orthogonal design. Development in elevated CO₂ reduced standard length and weight of juveniles, by 9% and 11% respectively, compared to ambient. Development under low food availability reduced length and weight of juveniles by 7% and 15% respectively, compared to high food. Parental exposure to elevated CO₂ restored the length of juveniles to that of controls, but it did not restore weight, resulting in juveniles from elevated CO₂ parents exhibiting 33% lower body condition when reared in elevated CO₂. The body size ratios (relative size of a fish from the rank above) within juvenile groups were not affected by any treatment, suggesting relative robustness of group-level structure despite alterations in individual size and condition. This study demonstrates that both food availability and elevated CO₂ can influence the physical attributes of juvenile reef fish, but these changes may not disrupt the emergent group structure of this social species, at least amongst juveniles.
