Zr-based multivariate metal-organic framework for rapid extraction of sulfonamide antibiotics from water and food samples

Based on multiple ligands strategy, a series of multivariate metal organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) named as PCN-224-DCDPSx were prepared using one-pot solvothermal method to extract and remove sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). The pore structure and adsorption performance can be further regulated by modulating the doping ratios of medium-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl) porphyrin and 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenyl sulfones. The MTV-MOFs of PCN-224-DCDPS1.0 possesses very large specific surface area (1625 m2/g). Using PCN-224-DCDPS1.0 as sorbent, a dispersive solid-phase extraction method was developed to extract and preconcentrate SAs from water, eggs, and milk prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. The limits of detection of method were determined between 0.17 and 0.27 ng/mL with enrichment factors ranging 214-327. The adsorption can be finished within 30 s, and the recovery rate remains above 80 % after 10 repeated uses. The adsorption capacities of sorbent were determined from 300 to 621 mg/g for sulfadiazine, sulphapyridine, sulfamethoxydiazine, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfabenzamide, and sulfadimethoxine. The adsorption mechanisms were investigated and can be attributed to π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions. This work represents a method for preparation of MTV-MOFs and uses as sorbent for extraction and enrichment of trace pollutants from complex samples.

Designing photothermal catalytic systems in multi-component MOFs for enhanced conversion of carbon dioxide

We integrated a pair of donor-acceptor photothermal units, a Lewis acidic site, and a nucleophilic catalytic site into a multi-component metal-organic framework, resulting in an efficient photothermal catalytic system for the conversion of CO2 to cyclic carbonates.

Utilizing Nanostructured Materials for Hydrogen Generation, Storage, and Diverse Applications

The rapid advancement of refined nanostructures and nanotechnologies offers significant potential to boost research activities in hydrogen storage. Recent innovations in hydrogen storage have centered on nanostructured materials, highlighting their effectiveness in molecular hydrogen storage, chemical storage, and as nanoconfined hydride supports. Emphasizing the importance of exploring ultra-high-surface-area nanoporous materials and metals, we advocate for their mechanical stability, rigidity, and high hydride loading capacities to enhance hydrogen storage efficiency. Despite the evident benefits of nanostructured materials in hydrogen storage, we also address the existing challenges and future research directions in this domain. Recent progress in creating intricate nanostructures has had a notable positive impact on the field of hydrogen storage, particularly in the realm of storing molecular hydrogen, where these nanostructured materials are primarily utilized.

Transition Behaviors of Isostructural Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks Composed of Naphthalene, Quinoxaline, and Pyrazinopyrazine Derivatives

A series of isostructural reticular frameworks with systematic differences on chemical structures allows us to disclose correlations between specific structural factors and properties, providing insights for designing novel porous materials. However, even slight differences in the molecular structure often lead to non-isostructural polymorphic frameworks particularly in the case of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) because the structures of HOFs are based on a subtle balance of reversible interactions. In this study, we found that three simple analogues of tetracarboxylic acids with naphthalene, quinoxaline, and pyrazinopyrazine cores (NT, QX, and PP, respectively) yielded isostructural solvated HOFs (NT-1, QX-1, and PP-1, respectively), where hydrogen-bonded sql-networked sheets were slip-stacked with closely similar manners. More importantly, these isostructural HOFs underwent structural transformations in different manners upon removal of the guest solvents. Comparison of the crystal structures of the HOFs before and after the transformation revealed that intermolecular interactions of the core significantly affected on rearrangements of hydrogen bonds in the transformation. The results suggest the potential to control the properties and functions of isostructural HOFs by elements in the core.

Tuning the electronic properties of Zr UiO-66 through defect-functionalised multivariate modulation

The multivariate modulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks is presented as a valuable tool to introduce multiple functional units into UiO-66 while increasing its porosity. This manuscript encloses a comprehensive study using p-functionalised benzoate -NO2, -SO3 and -SH modulators, rationalizing the defects introduced and their impact on properties.

Ordered assembly of two different metal clusters with the same topological connectivity in one single coordination network

The introduction of heterogeneous components within one single coordination network leads to the multifunctionality of the final material. However, it is hard to precisely control the local distribution of these different components in such a coordination network, especially for different components with identical topological connectivity. In this study, we successfully achieved the ordered assembly of [Mn3(μ3-O)] nodes and [Mn6(μ3-O)2(CH3COO)3] nodes within one pacs coordination network. The resulting new structure (NPU-6) with heterogeneous metal nodes simultaneously inherits the advantages of both parent networks (good thermal stability and high pore volume). The significant effect of the reaction concentration of competing ligand CH3COO- on the mixed assembly of these two nodes in NPU-6 is revealed by a series of control experiments. This method is anticipated to offer a valuable reference for orderly assembling heterogeneous components in coordination networks.

A three-component hydrogen bonded framework

A porous three-component hydrogen bonded framework, 1⋅biphen⋅TP, was prepared from a tetra-amidinium component (14+) and two different dianions, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (terephthalate, TP2-) and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate (biphen2-). Interestingly, when the framework was prepared in ethanol/water, 1⋅biphen⋅TP forms even when an excess of either dicarboxylate is present. However, when only water is used as solvent, only two-component frameworks are formed.

Metal Variance in Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting Catalytic Conversion of CO2

Developing efficient, low-cost, MOF catalysts for CO2 conversion at low CO2 concentrations under mild conditions is particularly interesting but remains highly challenging. Herein, we prepared an isostructural series of two-dimensional (2D) multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) containing copper- and/or silver-based cyclic trinuclear complexes (Cu-CTC and Ag-CTC). These MTV-MOFs can be used as efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalysts for the cyclization of propargylamine with CO2. The catalytic performance of these MTV-MOFs can be engineered by fine-tuning the Ag/Cu ratio in the framework. Interestingly, the induction of 10% Ag remarkably improved the catalytic efficiency with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 243 h-1, which is 20-fold higher than that of 100% Cu-based MOF (i.e., TOF = 10.8 h-1). More impressively, such a bimetallic MOF still exhibited high catalytic activity even for simulated flue gas with 10% CO2 concentration. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism has been examined through the employment of NMR monitoring experiments and DFT calculations.

Dual-modal analysis of cis-diols in traditional Chinese medicine via boronic acid incorporated metal organic frameworks

In this study, a boronic acid incorporated metal organic frameworks (inBA-MIL-100) were prepared via metal-ligand-fragment co-assembly strategy. The prepared frameworks can be served either as enrichment sorbent or SALDI-MS matrix for cis-diol containing molecules. Thus, a dual-modal analysis of cis-diols in traditional Chinese medicine has been established. Several significant advantages of the proposed strategy have been experimentally demonstrated, including high selectivity, high binding capacity (70 mg/g), good generality (5-250 μg/mL for HPLC based sample preparation, 10-500 ng/mL for SALDI-MS), high sensitivity (LOD: 180 ng/mL for HPLC based sample preparation, 5 ng/mL for SALDI-MS) and reliable quantification (RSD<3 % for HPLC based sample preparation, RSD<12 % for SALDI-MS) performance. Finally, the successful analysis of various cis-diols (active component and mycotoxin) in various Chinese traditional medicine was also achieved.

Modulation of Water Vapor Sorption by Pore Engineering in Isostructural Square Lattice Topology Coordination Networks

We report a crystal-engineering study conducted upon a platform of three mixed-linker square lattice (sql) coordination networks of general formula [Zn(Ria)(bphy)] [bphy = 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)hydrazine, H2Ria = 5-position-substituted isophthalic acid, and R = -Br, -NO2, and -OH; compounds 1-3]. Analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data of 1-2 and the simulated crystal structure of 3 revealed that 1-3 are isomorphous and sustained by bilayers of sql networks linked by hydrogen bonds. Although similar pore shapes and sizes exist in 1-3, distinct isotherm shapes (linear and S shape) and uptakes (2.4, 11.6, and 13.3 wt %, respectively) were observed. Ab initio calculations indicated that the distinct water sorption properties can be attributed to the R groups, which offer a range of hydrophilicity. Calculations indicated that the significantly lower experimental uptake in compound 1 can be attributed to a constricted channel. The calculated water-binding sites provide insights into how adsorbed water molecules bond to the pore walls, with the strongest interactions, water-hydroxyl hydrogen bonding, observed for 3. Overall, this study reveals how pore engineering can result in large variations in water sorption properties in an isomorphous family of rigid porous coordination networks.

Predictable Synthesis of 3D Polymer Networks Using Crystal Component-Linking

Controlled synthesis of 3D polymer networks presents a significant challenge because of the complexity of the polymerization reaction in solution. In this study, a polymerization system that facilitates the prediction of a polymer network structure via percolation simulations is realized. The most significant difference between general percolation simulations and experimental polymerization systems is the mobility of the molecules during the reaction. A crystal component-linking method that connects the precisely arranged monomer as a supramolecular crystalline state to imitate the simple percolation theory is adopted. The percolation simulation based on the crystal structure of the arranged monomers is used to accurately calculate the gelation point, gel fraction, degree of swelling, and atomic formula, which correspond with the experimental results. This suggests that the network structures polymerized via the crystal component-linking method can be predicted precisely by a simple percolation simulation. Further, the percolation simulation predicts the structures of the loop, branched polymer, and crosslinking point, which are difficult to measure experimentally. The polymerization of precisely-arranged immobilized monomers in supramolecular structures is promising in synthesizing precisely controlled polymer networks.

Ethylene Polymerization over Metal-Organic Framework-Supported Zirconocene Complexes

Metallocene immobilization onto a solid support helps to overcome the drawbacks of homogeneous metallocene complexes in the catalytic olefin polymerization. In this study, valuable insights have been obtained into the effects of pore size, linker composition, and surface groups of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on their role as support materials for metallocene-based ethylene polymerization catalysis. Three distinct Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, MOF-5, IRMOF-3, and ZIF-8, with different linkers have been activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO) and zirconocene complexes, followed by materials characterization and testing for ethylene polymerization. Characterization has been performed by multiple analytical tools, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and CO Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was found that the interactions between MOFs, MAO, and the zirconocene complex not only lead to both catalyst activation and deactivation but also result in the creation of multiple active sites. By alteration of the MOF support, it is possible to obtain polyethylene with different properties. Notably, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, M W = 5.34 × 106) was obtained using IRMOF-3 as support. This study reveals the potential of MOF materials as tunable porous supports for metallocene catalysts active in ethylene polymerization.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Spatially Confined Nanoreactors Designed for Biological Applications

The applications of nanoreactors in biology are becoming increasingly significant and prominent. Specifically, nanoreactors with spatially confined, due to their exquisite design that effectively limits the spatial range of biomolecules, attracted widespread attention. The main advantage of this structure is designed to improve reaction selectivity and efficiency by accumulating reactants and catalysts within the chambers, thus increasing the frequency of collisions between reactants. Herein, the recent progress in the synthesis of spatially confined nanoreactors and their biological applications is summarized, covering various kinds of nanoreactors, including porous inorganic materials, porous crystalline materials with organic components and self-assembled polymers to construct nanoreactors. These design principles underscore how precise reaction control could be achieved by adjusting the structure and composition of the nanoreactors to create spatial confined. Furthermore, various applications of spatially confined nanoreactors are demonstrated in the biological fields, such as biocatalysis, molecular detection, drug delivery, and cancer therapy. These applications showcase the potential prospects of spatially confined nanoreactors, offering robust guidance for future research and innovation.

Metal-Organic Frameworks/Heterojunction Structures for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering with Enhanced Sensitivity and Tailorability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are composed of crystalline microporous materials with metal ions, have gained considerable interest as promising substrate materials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection via charge transfer. Research on MOF-based SERS substrates has advanced rapidly because of the MOFs' excellent structural tunability, functionalizable pore interiors, and ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratios. Compared with traditional noble metal SERS plasmons, MOFs exhibit better biocompatibility, ease of operation, and tailorability. However, MOFs cannot produce a sufficient limit of detection (LOD) for ultrasensitive detection, and therefore, developing an ultrasensitive MOF-based SERS substrate is imperative. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to develop an MOFs/heterojunction structure as an SERS enhancing material. We report an in situ ZIF-67/Co(OH)2 heterojunction-based nanocellulose paper (nanopaper) plate (in situ ZIF-67 nanoplate) as a device with an LOD of 0.98 nmol/L for Rhodamine 6G and a Raman enhancement of 1.43 × 107, which is 100 times better than that of the pure ZIF-67-based SERS substrate. Further, we extend this structure to other types of MOFs and develop an in situ HKUST-1 nanoplate (with HKUST-1/Cu(OH)2). In addition, we demonstrate that the formation of heterojunctions facilitates efficient photoinduced charge transfer for SERS detection by applying the Mx(OH)y-assisted (where M = Co, Cu, or other metals) MOFs/heterojunction structure. Finally, we successfully demonstrate the application of medicine screening on our nanoplates, specifically for omeprazole. The nanoplates we developed still maintain the tailorability of MOFs and perform high anti-interference ability. Our approach provides customizing options for MOF-based SERS detection, catering to diverse possibilities in future research and applications.

Enhanced adsorption and removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution by amino-functionalized ZIF-8

Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which is a special subgroup of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), was synthesized and modified by ethylenediamine (ZIF-8-EDA) to prepare an efficient adsorbent for the high sorption of Cd2+ ions from solution. The synthesized and modified ZIF-8 (ZIF-8-EDA) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The optimum conditions for dosage of adsorbent, initial ion concentration, pH, and contact time were 0.05 g/l, 50 mg/l, 6, and 60 min, respectively, for cadmium ion sorption from aqueous solutions with a removal efficiency of 89.7% for ZIF-8 and 93.5% for ZIF-8-EDA. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich model. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximum uptake for the cadmium ions was 294.11(mg/g). The calculated thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) indicated that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic at 20-50 °C. Based on the results, the amino functionalized ZIF-8 had improved adsorption performance due to the replacing of the starting linker with organic ligands that had effective functional groups, leading to chemical coordination due to the interaction of metal ions with the non-bonding pair of electrons on the N atoms of the amino functional group. The selectivity toward metal ion adsorption by ZIF-8-EDA was Cd2+ > Pb2+ > Ni2+‏.

Discovery of two predictable (3,18)-connected topologies based on Wells-Dawson type cages for the design of porous metal phosphonocarboxylate frameworks

Highly connected molecular building blocks (MBBs) have been demonstrated to play a crucial role in reticular chemistry, particularly in predicting the topologies of metal-organic frameworks. Metal phosphonate clusters exhibit considerable advantages in constructing high-connectivity MBBs, owing to the multiple coordination modes offered by phosphonic ligands. Herein, four metal (M = CoII, MnII) phosphonocarboxylate frameworks (CoPCF-1,2 and MnPCF-1,2) were successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions by utilizing the phosphonocarboxylic ligand, 4'-phosphonobiphenyl-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (H4pbpdc), and their structural characterization was performed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The structures feature a duodenary nuclear M12(µ3-OH)2(CO2)12(PO3)6(DMF)6/(CH3COO)4.5 cluster, bearing resemblance to the well-known Wells-Dawson ion from polyoxometallate chemistry. It is the first time a Wells-Dawson type cage has served as an 18-connected molecular building block, forming two kinds of porous metal phosphonocarboxylate frameworks with novel (3,18)-connected gez and gea topologies. Their permanent porosities were confirmed through N2 adsorption studies. Notably, the MBB Co12 cluster-based CoPCF-1 shows a loss and recovery process of µ3-OH through single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation. The magnetic properties of the four compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior.

Switchable Anisotropic/Isotropic Photon Transport in a Double-Dipole Metal-Organic Framework via Radical-Controlled Energy Transfer

Directional control of photon transport at micro/nanoscale holds great potential in developing multifunctional optoelectronic devices. Here, the switchable anisotropic/isotropic photon transport is reported in a double-dipole metal-organic framework (MOF) based on radical-controlled energy transfer. Double-dipole MOF microcrystals with transition dipole moments perpendicular to each other have been achieved by the pillared-layer coordination strategy. The energy transfer between the double dipolar chromophores can be modulated by the photogenerated radicals, which permits the in situ switchable output on both polarization (isotropy/anisotropy state) and wavelength information (blue/red-color emission). On this basis, the original MOF microcrystal with isotropic polarization state displays the isotropic photon transport and similar reabsorption losses at various directions, while the radical-affected MOF microcrystal with anisotropic polarization state shows the anisotropic photon transport with distinct reabsorption losses at different directions, finally leading to the in situ switchable anisotropic/isotropic photon transport. These results offer a novel strategy for the development of MOF-based photonic devices with tunable anisotropic performance.

One-Pot Synthesis of 1,3,5-Trisubstitued Pyrazoles via Immobilized Thermomyces lanuginosus Lipase (TLL) on a Metal-Organic Framework

A regioselective enzyme-catalyzed system is selected for the synthesis of 1,3,5-trisubstituted pyrazole derivatives by adding phenyl hydrazines, nitroolefins, and benzaldehydes. The reaction is performed in a one-pot vessel with a yield ranging from 49 to 90%. TLL@MMI, immobilized Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (TLL) on a multivariate of MOF-5/IRMOF-3 (MMI), showed good performance for the catalysis of this reaction. The prepared biocatalyst was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX. The thermal and solvent stability of TLL@MMI was investigated in MeOH and EtOH after 24 h incubation. In the presence of 100% concentrations of EtOH, TLL@MMI has 80% activity.

Novel application of imidazole-based ligand-templated borates in a zinc-air battery

Two templated borates, [Co(1-EI)2]·[B5O7(OH)3] (1) and [Ga(1-MI)2·B6O9(OH)4]·[H3BO3]·H[1-MI] (2), have been synthesized using a mild method. Notably, they exhibit an excellent ORR performance with an E1/2 value of 0.84 V and are the first to be used as the positive electrode catalyst for a zinc-air battery, which opens a pathway for the application of borate-based oxide catalysts.

Insights into hydrogen and methane storage capacities: Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of SIGSUA

In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, the development of materials with efficient hydrogen and methane storage capacities is imperative, particularly for advancing hydrogen-powered vehicles. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates to meet the stringent targets set by the Department of Energy for both hydrogen and methane storage. This study employs Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the usable hydrogen and methane gravimetric and volumetric storage capacities of the recently synthesized SIGSUA. A comparative analysis encompasses the selected MOFs with similar metal compositions, those with comparable density and average pore radius, and classical benchmarks, such as IRMOF-15 and IRMOF-20, all evaluated at room temperature and moderate pressures ranging from 25 to 35 MPa. The results reveal that SIGSUA demonstrates noteworthy gravimetric and volumetric storage capacities for both hydrogen and methane, rivaling or surpassing those of the selected MOFs for analysis. These findings underscore the potential of SIGSUA in advancing clean energy storage technologies.

Programmable Water Sorption through Linker Installation into a Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework

Hydrolytically stable materials exhibiting a wide range of programmable water sorption behaviors are crucial for on-demand water sorption systems. While notable advancements in employing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising water adsorbents have been made, developing a robust yet easily tailorable MOF scaffold for specific operational conditions remains a challenge. To address this demand, we employed a topology-guided linker installation strategy using NU-600, which is a zirconium-based MOF (Zr-MOF) that contains three vacant crystallographically defined coordination sites. Through a judicious selection of three N-heterocyclic auxiliary linkers of specific lengths, we installed them into designated sites, giving rise to six new MOFs bearing different combinations of linkers in predetermined positions. The resulting MOFs, denoted as NU-606 to NU-611, demonstrate enhanced structural stability against capillary force-driven channel collapse during water desorption due to the increased connectivity of the Zr6 clusters in the resulting MOFs. Furthermore, incorporating these auxiliary linkers with various hydrophilic N sites enables the systematic modulation of the pore-filling pressure from about 55% relative humidity (RH) for the parent NU-600 down to below 40% RH. This topology-driven linker installation strategy offers precise control of water sorption properties for MOFs, highlighting a facile route to design MOF adsorbents for use in water sorption applications.

Heterometallic MIL-125(Ti-Al) frameworks for electrochemical determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid

The detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is not only of great significance in the areas of biomedicine and neurochemistry but also helpful in disease diagnosis and pathology research. Due to their diverse structures, designability, and large specific surface areas, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently caught considerable attention in the electrochemical field. Herein, a family of heterometallic MOFs with amino modification, MIL-125(Ti-Al)-xNH2 (x = 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), were synthesized and employed as electrochemical sensors for the detection of AA, DA, and UA. Among them, MIL-125(Ti-Al)-75%NH2 exhibited the most promising electrochemical behavior with 40% doping of carbon black in 0.1 M PBS (pH = 7.10), which displayed individual detection performance with wide linear detection ranges (1.0-6.5 mM for AA, 5-100 μM for DA and 5-120 μM for UA) and low limits of detection (0.215 mM for AA, 0.086 μM for DA, and 0.876 μM for UA, S/N = 3). Furthermore, the as-prepared MIL-125(Ti-Al)-75%NH2/GCE provided a promising platform for future application in real sample analysis, owing to its excellent anti-interference performance and good stability.

Time-Resolved Spectroscopy for Dynamic Investigation of Photoresponsive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Photoresponsive MOFs with precise and adjustable reticular structures are attractive for light conversion applications. Uncovering the photoinduced carrier dynamics lays the essential foundation for the further development and optimization of the MOF material. With the application of time-resolved spectroscopy, photophysical processes including excimer formation, energy transfer/migration, and charge transfer/separation have been widely investigated. However, the identification of distinct photophysical processes in real experimental MOF spectra still remains difficult due to the spectral and dynamic complexity of MOFs. In this Perspective, we summarize the typical spectral features of these photophysical processes and the related analysis methods for dynamic studies performed by time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Based on the recent understanding of excited-state properties of photoresponsive MOFs and the discussion of challenges and future outlooks, this Perspective aims to provide convenience for MOF kinetic analysis and contribute to the further development of photoresponsive MOF material.

Encoding ordered structural complexity to covalent organic frameworks

Installing different chemical entities onto crystalline frameworks with well-defined spatial distributions represents a viable approach to achieve ordered and complex synthetic materials. Herein, a covalent organic framework (COF-305) is constructed from tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane and 2,3-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde, which has the largest unit cell and asymmetric unit among known COFs. The ordered complexity of COF-305 is embodied by nine different stereoisomers of its constituents showing specific sequences on topologically equivalent sites, which can be attributed to its building blocks deviating from their intrinsically preferred simple packing geometries in their molecular crystals to adapt to the framework formation. The insight provided by COF-305 supplements the principle of covalent reticular design from the perspective of non-covalent interactions and opens opportunities for pursuing complex chemical sequences in molecular frameworks.

Quest for Multifunctionality: Current Progress in the Characterization of Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous, crystalline materials that have been systematically developed for a broad range of applications. Incorporation of two or more metals into a single crystalline phase to generate heterometallic MOFs has been shown to lead to synergistic effects, in which the whole is oftentimes greater than the sum of its parts. Because geometric proximity is typically required for metals to function cooperatively, deciphering and controlling metal distributions in heterometallic MOFs is crucial to establish structure-function relationships. However, determination of short- and long-range metal distributions is nontrivial and requires the use of specialized characterization techniques. Advancements in the characterization of metal distributions and interactions at these length scales is key to rapid advancement and rational design of functional heterometallic MOFs. This perspective summarizes the state-of-the-art in the characterization of heterometallic MOFs, with a focus on techniques that allow metal distributions to be better understood. Using complementary analyses, in conjunction with computational methods, is critical as this field moves toward increasingly complex, multifunctional systems.

Improving the gas sorption capacity in lantern-type metal-organic polyhedra by a scrambled cage method

The synthesis of multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a well-known method for increasing the complexity of porous frameworks. In these materials, the structural differences of the ligands used in the synthesis are sufficiently subtle that they can each occupy the same site in the framework. However, multivariate or ligand scrambling approaches are rarely used in the synthesis of porous metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) - the molecular equivalent of MOFs - despite the potential to retain a unique intrinsic pore from the individual cage while varying the extrinsic porosity of the material. Herein we directly synthesise scrambled cages across two families of lantern-type MOPs and find contrasting effects on their gas sorption properties. In one family, the scrambling approach sees a gradual increase in the BET surface area with the maximum and minimum uptakes associated with the two pure homoleptic cages. In the other, the scrambled materials display improved surface areas with respect to both of the original, homoleptic cages. Through analysis of the gas sorption isotherms, we attribute this effect to the balance of micro- and mesoporosity within the materials, which varies as a result of the scrambling approach. The gas uptake of the materials presented here underscores the tunability of cages that springs from their combination of intrinsic, extrinsic, micro- and meso-porosities.

Leveraging metal node-linker self-assembly to access functional anisotropy of zirconium-based MOF-on-MOF epitaxial heterostructure thin films

Chemically robust, functional porous materials are imperative for designing novel membranes for chemical separation and heterogeneous catalysts. Among the array of potential materials, zirconium (Zr)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered considerable attention, and have been investigated for applications related to gas separation and storage, and catalysis. However, a significant challenge with Zr-MOFs lies in their processibility, particularly in achieving homogenous thin films and controlling functional anisotropy. The recent developments in MOF thin film fabrication methodologies do not yield a solution to achieve mild reaction condition growth of Zr-MOF thin films with epitaxial MOF-on-MOF geometry (i.e. functional anisotropy). In the current work, we have devised a straightforward methodology under room temperature conditions, which enables epitaxial, oriented MOF-on-MOF thin film growth. This achievement is accomplished through a stepwise self-assembly approach involving Zr nodes and linkers on a functionalized substrate. This de novo developed strategy of functionality design is demonstrated for UiO-66 (University of Oslo) type Zr-MOFs. We have demonstrated the precise placement of chemical functionalities within the thin film structure, allowing for controlled chemical diffusion and regulation of diffusion selectivity.

Linker-Guided Growth of Single-Crystal Covalent Organic Frameworks

The core features of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystallinity and porosity. However, the synthesis of single-crystal COFs with monomers of diverse reactivity and adjustment of their pore structures remain challenging. Here, we show that linkers that can react with a node to form single-crystal COFs can guide other linkers that form either COFs or amorphous polymers with the node to gain single-crystal COFs with mixed components, which are homogeneous on the unit cell scale with controlled ratios. With the linker-guided crystal growth method, we created nine types of single-crystal COFs with up to nine different components, which are more complex than any known crystal. The structure of the crystal adapted approximately to that of the main component, and its pore volume could be expanded up to 8.8%. Different components lead to complex and diverse pore structures and offer the possibilities to gain positive synergies, as exemplified by a bicomponent COF with 2200 and 733% SO2 uptake capacity of that of the two pure-component counterparts at 298 K and 0.002 bar. The selectivity for separation of SO2/CO2 ranges from 1230 to 4247 for flue gas based on ideal adsorbed solution theory, recording porous crystals. The bicomponent COF also exhibits a 1300% retention time of its pure-component counterparts for SO2 in a dynamic column breakthrough experiment for deep desulfurization.

Near-Infrared Light-Driven Photocatalysis with an Emphasis on Two-Photon Excitation: Concepts, Materials, and Applications

Efficient utilization of sunlight in photocatalysis is widely recognized as a promising solution for addressing the growing energy demand and environmental issues resulting from fossil fuel consumption. Recently, there have been significant developments in various near-infrared (NIR) light-harvesting systems for artificial photosynthesis and photocatalytic environmental remediation. This review provides an overview of the most recent advancements in the utilization of NIR light through the creation of novel nanostructured materials and molecular photosensitizers, as well as modulating strategies to enhance the photocatalytic processes. A special focus is given to the emerging two-photon excitation NIR photocatalysis. The unique features and limitations of different systems are critically evaluated. In particular, it highlights the advantages of utilizing NIR light and two-photon excitation compared to UV-visible irradiation and one-photon excitation. Ongoing challenges and potential solutions for the future exploration of NIR light-responsive materials are also discussed.

Physiochemical characterization of metal organic framework materials: A mini review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials offering exceptional performance across a myriad of applications, attributable to their remarkable physicochemical properties such as regular porosity, crystalline structure, and tailored functional groups. Despite their potential, there is a lack of dedicated reviews that focus on key physicochemical characterizations of MOFs for the beginners and new researchers in the field. This review is written based on our expertise in the synthesis and characterization of MOFs, specifically to provide a right direction for the researcher who is a beginner in this area. In this way, experimental errors can be reduced, and wastage of time and chemicals can be avoided when new researchers conduct a study. In this article, this topic is critically analyzed, and findings and conclusions are presented. We reviewed three well-known XRD techniques, including PXRD, single crystal XRD, and SAXS, which were used for XRD analysis depending on the crystal size and the quality of crystal morphology. The TGA profile was an effective factor for evaluating the quality of the activation process and for ensuring the successful investigation for other characterizations. The BET and pore size were significantly affected by the activation process and selective benzene chain cross-linkers. FTIR is a prominent method that is used to investigate the functional groups on pore surfaces, and this method is successfully used to evaluate the activation process, characterize functionalized MOFs, and estimate their applications. The most significant methods of characterization include the X-ray diffraction, which is utilized for structural identification, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which is used for exploring thermal decomposition. It is important to note that the thermal stability of MOFs is influenced by two main factors: the metal-ligand interaction and the type of functional groups attached to the organic ligand. The textural properties of the MOFs, on the other hand, can be scrutinized through nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms experiments at 77 K. However, for smaller pore size, the Argon adsorption-desorption isotherm at 87.3 K is preferred. Furthermore, the CO2 adsorption isotherm at 273 K can be used to measure ultra-micropore sizes and sizes lower than these, which cannot be measured by using the N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm at 77 K. The highest BET was observed in high-valence MOFs that are constructed based on the metal-oxo cluster, which has an excellent ability to control their textural properties. It was found that the synthesis procedure (including the choice of solvent, cross-linker, secondary metal, surface functional groups, and temperature), activation method, and pressure significantly impact the surface area of the MOF and, by extension, its structural integrity. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy plays a crucial role in identifying active MOF functional groups. Understanding these physicochemical properties and utilizing relevant characterization techniques will enable more precise MOF selection for specific applications.

Flexibility On-Demand: Multivariate 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks

Dynamic 3D covalent organic frameworks (dynaCOFs) have shown concerted structural transformation and responses upon adaptive guest adsorption. The multivariate (MTV) strategy incorporating multiple functionalities within a backbone is attractive for tuning the framework flexibility and dynamic responses. However, a major synthetic challenge arises from the different chemical reactivities of linkers usually resulting in phase separation. Here, we report a general synthetic protocol for making 3D MTV-COFs by balancing the linker reactivity and solvent polarity. Specifically, 15 crystalline and phase pure MTV-COF-300 isostructures are constructed by linking a tetrahedral unit with eight ditopic struts carrying various functional groups. We find that the electron-donating groups make the linker reactivity too low to allow the reaction to proceed fully, while the electron-withdrawing groups afford increased reactivity and hardly yield crystalline materials. To overcome the crystallization dilemma, the combination of polar aprotic with nonpolar solvents was used to improve the solubility of oligomers and slow the reaction kinetics in MTV-COF synthesis. We demonstrate the abilities of these MTV-COFs to tune gas dynamic behaviors and the separation of benzene and cyclohexane. These findings reveal the integration of multivariate functionalities into dynaCOFs with on-demand flexibility to achieve dynamic synergism in particular applications, outperforming their pure, monofunctional counterparts.

One-Pot Synthesis of MOF@MOF: Structural Incompatibility Leads to Core-Shell Structure and Adaptability Control Makes the Sequence

Core-shell metal-organic frameworks (MOF@MOF) are promising materials with sophisticated structures that cannot only enhance the properties of MOFs but also endow them with new functions. The growth of isotopic lcore-shell MOFs is mostly limited to inconvenient stepwise seeding strategies with strict requirements, and by far one-pot synthesis is still of great challenge due to the interference of different components. Through two pairs of isoreticular MOFs, it reveals that the structural incompatibility is a prerequisite for the formation of MOFs@MOFs by one-pot synthesis, as illustrated by PMOF-3@HHU-9. It further unveils that the adaptability of the shell-MOF is a more key factor for nucleation kinetic control. MOFs with flexible linkers has comparably slower nucleation than MOFs with rigid linkers (forming PMOF-3@NJU-Bai21), and structural-flexible MOFs built by flexible linkers show the lowest nucleation and the most adaptability (affording NJU-Bai21@HHU-9). This degree of adaptability variation controls the sequence and further facilitates the synthesis of a first triple-layered core-shell MOF (PMOF-3@NJU-Bai21@HHU-9) by one-pot synthesis. The insight gained from this study will aid in the rational design and synthesis of other multi-shelled structures by one-pot synthesis and the further expansion of their applications.

Fabrication of angstrom-scale two-dimensional channels for mass transport

Fluidic channels at atomic scales regulate cellular trafficking and molecular filtration across membranes, and thus play crucial roles in the functioning of living systems. However, constructing synthetic channels experimentally at these scales has been a significant challenge due to the limitations in nanofabrication techniques and the surface roughness of the commonly used materials. Angstrom (Å)-scale slit-like channels overcome such challenges as these are made with precise control over their dimensions and can be used to study the fluidic properties of gases, ions and water at unprecedented scales. Here we provide a detailed fabrication method of the two-dimensional Å-scale channel devices that can be assembled to contain a desired number of channels, a single channel or up to hundreds of channels, made with atomic-scale precision using layered crystals. The procedure includes the fabrication of the substrate, flake, spacer layer, flake transfers, van der Waals assembly and postprocessing. We further explain how to perform molecular transport measurements with the Å-channels to directly probe the intriguing and anomalous phenomena that help shed light on the physics governing ultra-confined transport. The procedure requires a total of 1-2 weeks for the fabrication of the two-dimensional channel device and is suitable for users with prior experience in clean room working environments and nanofabrication.

Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks as Tailor-Made Scaffolds for Water Harvesting

Developing materials to harvest water from the air is of great importance to alleviate the water shortage for people living in arid regions, where the annual average relative humidity (RH) is lower than 0.4. In this work, we report a general nitrogen atom incorporation strategy to prepare high-performance covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for water harvesting from the air in arid areas. A series of COFs, namely COF-W1, COF-W2, and COF-W3 were developed for this purpose. Different contents of nitrogen were embedded into COFs by incorporating pyridine units into the building blocks. With the increasing content of nitrogen from COF-W1 to COF-W3, the inflection points of their water isotherms shift distinctly from RH values from 0.65 to 0.25. Significantly, COF-W3 exhibits the lowest inflection point at a low RH value of 0.25 and reaches a high uptake capacity of 0.28 g g-1 at 25 °C with a low hysteresis loop. Moreover, the gram-scale COF-W3 retains its high performance, which renders it more attractive in water harvesting. This work demonstrates the feasibility of this nitrogen incorporation strategy to acquire high-performance COFs as water harvesters in the future.

Accelerating structure reconstruction to form NiOOH in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction

Structural reconstruction of electrocatalysts to generate metal hydroxide/oxyhydroxide species is critical for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the controllable regulation of the reconstruction process still remains a challenge. Given the designable nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), herein, we have reported a localized structure disordering strategy to accelerate the structural reconstruction of Ni-BDC to generate NiOOH for boosting the OER. The Ni-BDC nanosheets were modified by Fe3+ and urea to form cracks, which could promote the accessibility of the Ni sites by the electrolyte and thus promote the reconstruction to form NiOOH. In addition, the interaction between Ni2+ and Fe3+ allows the electron flow from Ni2+ to Fe3+, further enhancing the NiOOH generation. As a result, the optimized sample exhibits excellent OER activity with a small overpotential of 251 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is superior to most of the MOF-based OER catalysts reported previously. This work provides a controllable strategy to regulate the structural reconstruction for promoting the OER, which could provide important guidance for the development of more efficient OER electrocatalysts.

From 3D to 2D: Directional Morphological Evolution of a Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework

The morphology of materials has a huge impact on their properties and functions; however, the precise control and direct evolution toward specific morphologies remains challenging. Herein, we outline a novel strategy for the morphology modulation of covalent organic frameworks based on COF-300 with the diamond structure, which usually exhibits a three-dimensional shuttle morphology. A monofunctional structural regulator has been designed to break the continuity of the three-dimensional structure. As the proportion of the monofunctional structural regulator increases, the morphology of COF-300 shows a directional evolution from a shuttle morphology to a two-dimensional nanosheet, while still retaining the consistency of the crystal structure. Our study reports the first two-dimensional nanosheet based on a three-dimensional structured COF to date and will inspire future research into the traced morphological evolution in materials by predesign.

Multivariate metal-organic frameworks generated through post-synthetic modification: impact and future directions

Reticular chemistry has proven to be invaluable over time, thanks to the structural versatility, and tailored porosity observed in structures like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs). Despite the wide array of ligands and metals available for synthesizing MOFs, they are still somewhat constrained by the reliance on de novo conditions and the focus on generating MOFs with single ligand and metal. To surpass these limitations, researchers have established strategies to generate multivariate (MTV) MOF structures incorporating more than one ligand/metal into the crystal lattice. MTV-MOFs have demonstrated enhanced properties by virtue of the additional functionalities incorporated within their structures. One approach to developing MTV-MOFs is through post-synthetic modification (PSM), where new functionalities are introduced after the initial synthesis, thereby achieving the enhanced properties of MTV-MOFs even in cases where the new functionalities are incompatible with MOF synthesis.

Multivariate Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with Tunable Permanent Porosities for Capture of a Mustard Gas Simulant

Precise synthesis of topologically predictable and discrete molecular crystals with permanent porosities remains a long-term challenge. Here, we report the first successful synthesis of a series of 11 isoreticular multivariate hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MTV-HOFs) from pyrene-based derivatives bearing -H, -CH3 , -NH2 and -F groups achieved by a shape-fitted, π-π stacking self-assembly strategy. These MTV-HOFs are single-crystalline materials composed of tecton, as verified by single-crystal diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, Raman spectra, water sorption isotherms and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These MTV-HOFs exhibit tunable hydrophobicity with water uptake starting from 50 to 80 % relative humidity, by adjusting the combinations and ratios of functional groups. As a proof of application, the resulting MTV-HOFs were shown to be capable of capturing a mustard gas simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) from moisture. The location of different functional groups within the pores of the MTV-HOFs leads to a synergistic effect, which resulted in a superior CEES/H2 O selectivity (up to 94 %) compared to that of the HOFs with only pure component and enhanced breakthrough performance (up to 4000 min/g) when compared to benchmark MOF materials. This work is an important advance in the synthesis of MTV-HOFs, and provides a platform for the development of porous molecular materials for numerous applications.

Intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional semiconducting metal-organic framework

The development of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors with room-temperature ferromagnetism is a significant challenge in materials science and is important for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. Herein, we demonstrate that a 2D semiconducting antiferromagnetic Cu-MOF can be endowed with intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic coupling using a ligand cleavage strategy to regulate the inner magnetic interaction within the Cu dimers. Using the element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique, we provide unambiguous evidence for intrinsic ferromagnetism. Exhaustive structural characterizations confirm that the change of magnetic coupling is caused by the increased distance between Cu atoms within a Cu dimer. Theoretical calculations reveal that the ferromagnetic coupling is enhanced with the increased Cu-Cu distance, which depresses the hybridization between 3d orbitals of nearest Cu atoms. Our work provides an effective avenue to design and fabricate MOF-based semiconducting room-temperature ferromagnetic materials and promotes their practical applications in next-generation spintronic devices.

Stepwise construction of multi-component metal-organic frameworks

Multi-component metal-organic frameworks (MC-MOFs) are crystalline porous materials containing multiple organic ligands or mixed metals, which manifest new properties beyond the linear combination of the single component. However, the traditional one-pot synthesis method for MOFs is not always applicable for synthesizing MC-MOFs due to the competitive coordination of multiple ligands and metals. Therefore, the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs has been explored, which enables more precise control of the heterogeneity within the ordered MC-MOFs. This review provides a summary of the synthesis strategies, namely, ligand exchange, coordinative modification, covalent modification, ligand metalation, cluster metalation, and use of mixed-metal precursors, for the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of MC-MOFs with ordered arrangements of multiple functionalities, focusing on gas adsorption and separation, water remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescence, and chemical sensing.

Data Driven Discovery of MOFs for Hydrogen Gas Adsorption

Hydrogen gas (H2) is a clean and renewable energy source, but the lack of efficient and cost-effective storage materials is a challenge to its widespread use. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous materials, have been extensively studied for H2 storage due to their tunable structural and chemical features. However, the large design space offered by MOFs makes it challenging to select or design appropriate MOFs with a high H2 storage capacity. To overcome these challenges, we present a data-driven computational approach that systematically designs new functionalized MOFs for H2 storage. In particular, we showcase the framework of a hybrid particle swarm optimization integrated genetic algorithm, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, and our in-house MOF structure generation code to design new MOFs with excellent H2 uptake. This automated, data driven framework adds appropriate functional groups to IRMOF-10 to improve its H2 adsorption capacity. A detailed analysis of the top selected MOFs, their adsorption isotherms, and MOF design rules to enhance H2 adsorption are presented. We found a functionalized IRMOF-10 with an enhanced H2 adsorption increased by ∼6 times compared to that of pure IRMOF-10 at 1 bar and 77 K. Furthermore, this study also utilizes machine learning and deep learning techniques to analyze a large data set of MOF structures and properties, in order to identify the key factors that influence hydrogen adsorption. The proof-of-concept that uses a machine learning/deep learning approach to predict hydrogen adsorption based on the identified structural and chemical properties of the MOF is demonstrated.

Accelerating the prediction of CO2 capture at low partial pressures in metal-organic frameworks using new machine learning descriptors

Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered for various gas storage and separation applications. Theoretically, there are an infinite number of MOFs that can be created; however, a finite amount of resources are available to evaluate each one. Computational methods can be adapted to expedite the process of evaluation. In the context of CO2 capture, this paper investigates the method of screening MOFs using machine learning trained on molecular simulation data. New descriptors are introduced to aid this process. Using all descriptors, it is shown that machine learning can predict the CO2 adsorption, with an R2 of above 0.9. The introduced Effective Point Charge (EPoCh) descriptors, which assign values to frameworks' partial charges based on the expected CO2 uptake of an equivalent point charge in isolation, are shown to be the second most important group of descriptors, behind the Henry coefficient. Furthermore, the EPoCh descriptors are hundreds of thousands of times faster to obtain compared with the Henry coefficient, and they achieve similar results when identifying top candidates for CO2 capture using pseudo-classification predictions.

MOF-Based Chemiresistive Gas Sensors: Toward New Functionalities

The sensing performances of gas sensors must be improved and diversified to enhance quality of life by ensuring health, safety, and convenience. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit an extremely high surface area, abundant porosity, and unique surface chemistry, provide a promising framework for facilitating gas-sensor innovations. Enhanced understanding of conduction mechanisms of MOFs has facilitated their use as gas-sensing materials, and various types of MOFs have been developed by examining the compositional and morphological dependences and implementing catalyst incorporation and light activation. Owing to their inherent separation and absorption properties and catalytic activity, MOFs are applied as molecular sieves, absorptive filtering layers, and heterogeneous catalysts. In addition, oxide- or carbon-based sensing materials with complex structures or catalytic composites can be derived by the appropriate post-treatment of MOFs. This review discusses the effective techniques to design optimal MOFs, in terms of computational screening and synthesis methods. Moreover, the mechanisms through which the distinctive functionalities of MOFs as sensing materials, heterostructures, and derivatives can be incorporated in gas-sensor applications are presented.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Nucleated by Silk Fibroin and Modified with Tumor-Targeting Peptides for Targeted Multimodal Cancer Therapy

Multimodal therapy requires effective drug carriers that can deliver multiple drugs to specific locations in a controlled manner. Here, the study presents a novel nanoplatform constructed using zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a nanoscale metal-organic framework nucleated under the mediation of silk fibroin (SF). The nanoplatform is modified with the newly discovered MCF-7 breast tumor-targeting peptide, AREYGTRFSLIGGYR (AR peptide). Indocyanine green (ICG) and doxorubicin (DOX) are loaded onto the nanoplatform with high drug encapsulation efficiency (>95%). ICG enables the resultant nanoparticles (NPs), called AR-ZS/ID-P, to release reactive oxygen species for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and heat for photothermal therapy (PTT) under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, promoting NIR fluorescence and thermal imaging to guide DOX-induced chemotherapy. Additionally, the controlled release of both ICG and DOX at acidic tumor conditions due to the dissolution of ZIF-8 provides a drug-targeting mechanism in addition to the AR peptide. When intravenously injected, AR-ZS/ID-P NPs specifically target breast tumors and exhibit higher anticancer efficacy than other groups through ICG-enabled PDT and PTT and DOX-derived chemotherapy, without inducing side effects. The results demonstrate that AR-ZS/ID-P NPs are a promising multimodal theranostic nanoplatform with maximal therapeutic efficacy and minimal side effects for targeted and controllable drug delivery.

Coordination Defect-Induced Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Polyoxo-metalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Catalytic Hydrogenation

Precise control of the structure and spatial distance of Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) sites in a porous system to construct efficient solid frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalyst is vital for industrial application but remains challenging. Herein, we constructed FLP sites in a polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) by introducing coordination-defect metal nodes (LA) and surface-basic POM with abundant oxygen (LB). The well-defined and unique spatial conformation of the defective POM-based MOF ensure that the distance between LA and LB is at ~4.3 Å, a suitable distance to activate H2 . This FLP catalyst can heterolytically dissociate H2 into active Hδ- , thus exhibiting high activity in hydrogenation, which is 55 and 2.7 times as high as that of defect-free POM-based MOF and defective MOF without POM, respectively. This work provides a new avenue toward precise design multi-site catalyst to achieve specific activation of target substrate for synergistic catalysis.

Chiral Superlattices Self-Assembled from Post-Modified Metal-Organic Polyhedra

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are inherently porous, discrete, and solvent-dispersive, and directing them into chiral superlattices through direct self-assembly remains a considerable challenge due to their nanoscale size and structural complexity. In this work, we illustrate a postmodification protocol to covalently conjugate a chiral cholesteryl pendant to MOPs. Postmodification retained the coordination cores and allowed for reaction-induced self-assembly in loosely packed nanosized columns without supramolecular chirality. Solvent-processed bottom-up self-assembly in aqueous media facilitated the well-defined packing into twisted superlattices with a 5 nm lattice parameter. Experimental and computational results validated the role of intercholesteryl forces in spinning the nanosized MOPs, which achieved the chirality transfer to supramolecular scale with chiral optics. This work establishes a novel protocol in rational design of MOP-based chiroptical materials for potential applications of enantioselective adsorption, catalysis, and separation.

An introductory review on advanced multifunctional materials

This review summarizes the applications of some of the advanced materials. It included the synthesis of several nanoparticles such as metal oxide nanoparticles (e.g., Fe₃O₄, ZnO, ZrOSO₄, MoO_3-x, CuO, AgFeO₂, Co₃O₄, CeO₂, SiO₂, and CuFeO₂); metal hydroxide nanosheets (e.g., Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O, Zn(OH)(NO₃)·H₂O, and Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂); metallic nanoparticles (Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt); carbon-based nanomaterials (graphene, graphene oxide (GO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), and carbon dots (CDs)); biopolymers (cellulose, nanocellulose, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs), and chitosan); organic polymers (e.g. covalent-organic frameworks (COFs)); and hybrid materials (e.g. metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)). Most of these materials were applied in several fields such as environmental-based technologies (e.g., water remediation, air purification, gas storage), energy (production of hydrogen, dimethyl ether, solar cells, and supercapacitors), and biomedical sectors (sensing, biosensing, cancer therapy, and drug delivery). They can be used as efficient adsorbents and catalysts to remove emerging contaminants e.g., inorganic (i.e., heavy metals) and organic (e.g., dyes, antibiotics, pesticides, and oils in water via adsorption. They can be also used as catalysts for catalytic degradation reactions such as redox reactions of pollutants. They can be used as filters for air purification by capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They can be used for hydrogen production via water splitting, alcohol oxidation, and hydrolysis of NaBH₄. Nanomedicine for some of these materials was also included being an effective agent as an antibacterial, nanocarrier for drug delivery, and probe for biosensing.

Chemical complexity for targeted function in heterometallic titanium-organic frameworks

Research on metal-organic frameworks is shifting from the principles that control the assembly, structure, and porosity of these reticular solids, already established, into more sophisticated concepts that embrace chemical complexity as a tool for encoding their function or accessing new properties by exploiting the combination of different components (organic and inorganic) into these networks. The possibility of combining multiple linkers into a given network for multivariate solids with tunable properties dictated by the nature and distribution of the organic connectors across the solid has been well demonstrated. However, the combination of different metals remains still comparatively underexplored due to the difficulties in controlling the nucleation of heterometallic metal-oxo clusters during the assembly of the framework or the post-synthetic incorporation of metals with distinct chemistry. This possibility is even more challenging for titanium-organic frameworks due to the additional difficulties intrinsic to controlling the chemistry of titanium in solution. In this perspective article we provide an overview of the synthesis and advanced characterization of mixed-metal frameworks and emphasize the particularities of those based in titanium with particular focus on the use of additional metals to modify their function by controlling their reactivity in the solid state, tailoring their electronic structure and photocatalytic activity, enabling synergistic catalysis, directing the grafting of small molecules or even unlocking the formation of mixed oxides with stoichiometries not accessible to conventional routes.

A novel design of Cu(I) active site on the metal-organic framework for exploring the structural transformation of Fenton-like catalysts through in situ "capturing" OH. The mutual transformation of reactive oxygen species may affect the structural transformation of catalysts during the Fenton-like processes. Its in-depth understanding is essential to achieve high catalytic activity and stability. In this study, a novel design of Cu(I) active sites based on the metal-organic framework (MOF) is proposed to "capture" OH^- produced via Fenton-like processes and re-coordinate the oxidized Cu sites. The Cu(I)-MOF presents an excellent removal efficiency for sulfamethoxazole (SMX), with a high removal kinetic constant of 7.146 min^-1. Combing DFT calculations with experimental observations, we have revealed that the Cu of Cu(I)-MOF exhibits a lower d-band center, enabling efficient activation of H₂O₂ and spontaneous "capturing" of OH^- to form Cu-MOF, which can be reorganized into the Cu(I)-MOF through molecular regulation for recycle. This research demonstrates a promising Fenton-like approach for solving the trade-off between catalytic activity and stability and provides new insights into the design and synthesis of efficient MOF-based catalysts for water treatment.
