Development and performance simulations of a soft X-ray and XUV split-and-delay unit at beamlines FL23/24 at FLASH2 for time-resolved two-color pump-probe experiments

The split-and-delay unit (SDU) at FLASH2 will be upgraded to enable the simultaneous operation of two temporally, spatially and spectrally separated probe beams when the free-electron laser undulators are operated in a two-color scheme. By means of suitable thin filters and an optical grating beam path a wide range of combinations of photon energies in the spectral range from 150 eV to 780 eV can be chosen. In this paper, simulations of the spectral transmission and performance parameters of the filter technique are discussed, along with a monochromator with dispersion compensation presently under construction.

Exploring the ultrafast and isomer-dependent photodissociation of iodothiophenes via site-selective ionization

C-I bond extension and fission following ultraviolet (UV, 262 nm) photoexcitation of 2- and 3-iodothiophene is studied using ultrafast time-resolved extreme ultraviolet (XUV) ionization in conjunction with velocity map ion imaging. The photoexcited molecules and eventual I atom products are probed by site-selective ionization at the I 4d edge using intense XUV pulses, which induce multiple charges initially localized to the iodine atom. At C-I separations below the critical distance for charge transfer (CT), charge can redistribute around the molecule leading to Coulomb explosion and charged fragments with high kinetic energy. At greater C-I separations, beyond the critical distance, CT is no longer possible and the measured kinetic energies of the charged iodine atoms report on the neutral dissociation process. The time and momentum resolved measurements allow determination of the timescales and the respective product momentum and kinetic energy distributions for both isomers, which are interpreted in terms of rival 'direct' and 'indirect' dissociation pathways. The measurements are compared with a classical over the barrier model, which reveals that the onset of the indirect dissociation process is delayed by ∼1 ps relative to the direct process. The kinetics of the two processes show no discernible difference between the two parent isomers, but the branching between the direct and indirect dissociation channels and the respective product momentum distributions show isomer dependencies. The greater relative yield of indirect dissociation products from 262 nm photolysis of 3-iodothiophene (cf. 2-iodothiophene) is attributed to the different partial cross-sections for (ring-centred) π∗ ← π and (C-I bond localized) σ∗ ← (n/π) excitation in the respective parent isomers.

Resonant Auger decay of dissociating CH3I near the I 4d threshold

Resonant Auger processes provide a unique perspective on electronic interactions and excited vibrational and electronic states of molecular ions. Here, new data are presented on the resonant Auger decay of excited CH3I in the region just below the I 4d-1 ionization threshold. The resonances include the Rydberg series converging to the five spin-orbit and ligand-field split CH3I (I 4d-1) thresholds, as well as resonances corresponding to excitation from the I 4d5/2,3/2 orbitals into the σ* lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. This study focuses on participator decay that populates the lowest lying states of CH3I+, in particular, the X̃2E3/2 and 2E1/2 states, and on spectator decay that populates the lowest-lying (CH3I2+)σ* states of CH3I+. The CH3I (I 4d-1)σ* resonances are broad, and dissociation to CH3 + I competes with the autoionization of the core-excited states. Auger decay as the molecule dissociates produces a photoelectron spectrum with a long progression (up to v3+ ∼ 25) in the C-I stretching mode of the X̃2E3/2 and 2E1/2 states, providing insights into the shape of the dissociative core-excited surface. The observed spectator decay processes indicate that CH3I+ is formed on the repulsive wall of the lower-lying (CH3I2+)σ* potentials, and the photon-energy dependence of the processes provides insights into the relative slopes of the (4d-1)σ* and (CH3I2+)σ* potential surfaces. Data are also presented for the spectator decay of higher lying CH3I (I 4d-1)nl Rydberg resonances. Photoelectron angular distributions for the resonant Auger processes provide additional information that helps distinguish these processes from the direct ionization signal.

Characterizing the multi-dimensional reaction dynamics of dihalomethanes using XUV-induced Coulomb explosion imaging

Site-selective probing of iodine 4d orbitals at 13.1 nm was used to characterize the photolysis of CH2I2 and CH2BrI initiated at 202.5 nm. Time-dependent fragment ion momenta were recorded using Coulomb explosion imaging mass spectrometry and used to determine the structural dynamics of the dissociating molecules. Correlations between these fragment momenta, as well as the onset times of electron transfer reactions between them, indicate that each molecule can undergo neutral three-body photolysis. For CH2I2, the structural evolution of the neutral molecule was simultaneously characterized along the C-I and I-C-I coordinates, demonstrating the sensitivity of these measurements to nuclear motion along multiple degrees of freedom.

Entangled X-Ray Photon Pair Generation by Free-Electron Lasers

We investigate entangled x-ray photon pair emissions in a free-electron laser (FEL) and establish a quantum electrodynamical theory for coherently amplified entangled photon pair emission from microbunched electron pulses in the undulator. We provide a scheme to generate highly entangled x-ray photon pairs and numerically demonstrate the properties of entangled emission, which is of great importance in x-ray quantum optics. Our work shows a unique advantage of FELs in entangled x-ray photon pair generation.

Molecular photodissociation dynamics revealed by Coulomb explosion imaging

Coulomb explosion imaging (CEI) methods are finding ever-growing use as a means of exploring and distinguishing the static stereo-configurations of small quantum systems (molecules, clusters, etc). CEI experiments initiated by ultrafast (femtosecond-duration) laser pulses also allow opportunities to track the time-evolution of molecular structures, and thereby advance understanding of molecular fragmentation processes. This Perspective illustrates two emerging families of dynamical studies. 'One-colour' studies (employing strong field ionisation driven by intense near infrared or single X-ray or extreme ultraviolet laser pulses) afford routes to preparing multiply charged molecular cations and exploring how their fragmentation progresses from valence-dominated to Coulomb-dominated dynamics with increasing charge and how this evolution varies with molecular size and composition. 'Two-colour' studies use one ultrashort laser pulse to create electronically excited neutral molecules (or monocations), whose structural evolution is then probed as a function of pump-probe delay using an ultrafast ionisation pulse along with time and position-sensitive detection methods. This latter type of experiment has the potential to return new insights into not just molecular fragmentation processes but also charge transfer processes between moieties separating with much better defined stereochemical control than in contemporary ion-atom and ion-molecule charge transfer studies.

Intermolecular Charge Transfer Induced Fragmentation of Formic Acid Dimers

We investigate the intermolecular nonradiative charge transfer process in a double hydrogen-bonded formic acid (FA) dimer, initiated by electron-collision induced double ionization of one FA molecule. Through fragment ions and electron coincident momentum measurements and ab initio calculations, we obtain direct evidence that electron transfer from the neighboring FA molecule to fill one of the two vacancies occurs by a potential energy curve crossing of FA^{++}+FA with FA^{+}+FA^{+*} curves, forming an electronic excited state of dicationic dimers. This process causes the breaking of two hydrogen bonds and subsequently the cleavage of C─H and C─O covalent bonds in the dimers, which is expected to be a general phenomenon occurring in molecular complexes and can have important implications for radiation damage to biological matter.

Ultrafast Roaming Mechanisms in Ethanol Probed by Intense Extreme Ultraviolet Free-Electron Laser Radiation: Electron Transfer versus Proton Transfer

Ultrafast H₂⁺ and H₃⁺ formation from ethanol is studied using pump-probe spectroscopy with an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free-electron laser. The first pulse creates a dication, triggering H₂ roaming that leads to H₂⁺ and H₃⁺ formation, which is disruptively probed by a second pulse. At photon energies of 28 and 32 eV, the ratio of H₂⁺ to H₃⁺ increases with time delay, while it is flat at a photon energy of 70 eV. The delay-dependent effect is ascribed to a competition between electron and proton transfer. High-level quantum chemistry calculations show a flat potential energy surface for H₂ formation, indicating that the intermediate state may have a long lifetime. The ab initio molecular dynamics simulation confirms that, in addition to the direct emission, a small portion of H₂ undergoes a roaming mechanism that leads to two competing pathways: electron transfer from H₂ to C₂H₄O²⁺ and proton transfer from C₂H₄O²⁺ to H₂.

Filming enhanced ionization in an ultrafast triatomic slingshot

Filming atomic motion within molecules is an active pursuit of molecular physics and quantum chemistry. A promising method is laser-induced Coulomb Explosion Imaging (CEI) where a laser pulse rapidly ionizes many electrons from a molecule, causing the remaining ions to undergo Coulomb repulsion. The ion momenta are used to reconstruct the molecular geometry which is tracked over time (i.e., filmed) by ionizing at an adjustable delay with respect to the start of interatomic motion. Results are distorted, however, by ultrafast motion during the ionizing pulse. We studied this effect in water and filmed the rapid "slingshot" motion that enhances ionization and distorts CEI results. Our investigation uncovered both the geometry and mechanism of the enhancement which may inform CEI experiments in many other polyatomic molecules.

X-ray induced electron and ion fragmentation dynamics in IBr

Characterization of the inner-shell decay processes in molecules containing heavy elements is key to understanding x-ray damage of molecules and materials and for medical applications with Auger-electron-emitting radionuclides. The 1s hole states of heavy atoms can be produced by absorption of tunable x rays and the resulting vacancy decays characterized by recording emitted photons, electrons, and ions. The 1s hole states in heavy elements have large x-ray fluorescence yields that transfer the hole to intermediate electron shells that then decay by sequential Auger-electron transitions that increase the ion’s charge state until the final state is reached. In molecules, the charge is spread across the atomic sites, resulting in dissociation to energetic atomic ions. We have used x-ray/ion coincidence spectroscopy to measure charge states and energies of I q+ and Br q′+ atomic ions following 1s ionization at the I and Br K-edges of IBr. We present the charge states and kinetic energies of the two correlated fragment ions associated with core-excited states produced during the various steps of the cascades. To understand the dynamics leading to the ion data, we develop a computational model that combines Monte-Carlo/Molecular-Dynamics (MC/MD) simulations with a classical over-the-barrier model to track inner-shell cascades and redistribution of electrons in valence orbitals and nuclear motion of fragments.

Energy-dependent timescales in the dissociation of diiodothiophene dication

Photodissociation molecular dynamics of gas-phase 2,5-diiodothiophene molecules was studied in an electron-energy-resolved electron-multi-ion coincidence experiment performed at the FinEstBeAMS beamline of MAX IV synchrotron. Following the photoionization of the iodine 4d subshell and the Auger decay, the dissociation landscape of the molecular dication was investigated as a function of the Auger electron energy. Concentrating on an major dissociation pathway, C₄H₂I₂S²⁺ → C₄H₂S⁺ + I⁺ + I, and accessing the timescales of the process via ion momentum correlation analysis, it was revealed how this three-body process changes depending on the available internal energy. Using a generalized secondary dissociation model, the process was shown to evolve from secondary dissociation regime towards concerted dissociation as the available energy increased, with the secondary dissociation time constant changing from 1.5 ps to 129 fs. The experimental results were compared with simulations using a stochastic charge-hopping molecular mechanics model. It represented the observed trend and also gave a fair quantitative agreement with the experiment.

Fragmentation of SO2 q+ (q = 2-4) induced by 1 keV electron collision

We report an investigation on the fragmentation dynamics of SO₂ ^q+ (q = 2-4) induced by 1 keV electron collision utilizing an ion momentum imaging spectrometer. Six complete Coulomb explosion channels were observed using the time-of-flight correlation map. The kinetic energy release distributions for these channels were obtained and compared with those available in the literature. The fragmentation mechanisms of the three-body dissociation channels were analyzed by the Dalitz plots and Newton diagrams. Both concerted breakup and sequential fragmentation pathways were identified in the channel SO₂ ³⁺ → O⁺ + O⁺ + S⁺, whereas only the concerted breakup mechanism was confirmed for the channels SO₂ ⁴⁺ → O⁺ + O⁺ + S²⁺ and SO₂ ⁴⁺ → O²⁺ + O⁺ + S⁺. Using the Coulomb explosion model, we determined the molecular geometry from the concerted fragmentation channels, and the obtained bond lengths and angles from the higher kinetic energy release peaks are close to that of the neutral SO₂ obtained by high-level quantum chemical calculation. The present results indicate that the electron impact experiment is a potential tool for the Coulomb explosion imaging of small molecules.

Ultrafast light-induced dynamics in the microsolvated biomolecular indole chromophore with water

Interactions between proteins and their solvent environment can be studied in a bottom-up approach using hydrogen-bonded chromophore-solvent clusters. The ultrafast dynamics following UV-light-induced electronic excitation of the chromophores, potential radiation damage, and their dependence on solvation are important open questions. The microsolvation effect is challenging to study due to the inherent mix of the produced gas-phase aggregates. We use the electrostatic deflector to spatially separate different molecular species in combination with pump-probe velocity-map-imaging experiments. We demonstrate that this powerful experimental approach reveals intimate details of the UV-induced dynamics in the near-UV-absorbing prototypical biomolecular indole-water system. We determine the time-dependent appearance of the different reaction products and disentangle the occurring ultrafast processes. This approach ensures that the reactants are well-known and that detailed characteristics of the specific reaction products are accessible - paving the way for the complete chemical-reactivity experiment.

Perspectives of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry: Spectroscopy and Modeling

The study of ions in the gas phase has a long history and has involved both chemists and physicists. The interplay of their competences with the use of very sophisticated commercial and/or homemade instrumentations and theoretical models has improved the knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics of many chemical reactions, even if still many stages of these processes need to be fully understood. The new technologies and the novel free-electron laser facilities based on plasma acceleration open new opportunities to investigate the chemical reactions in some unrevealed fundamental aspects. The synchrotron light source can be put beside the FELs, and by mass spectrometric techniques and spectroscopies coupled with versatile ion sources it is possible to really change the state of the art of the ion chemistry in different areas such as atmospheric and astro chemistry, plasma chemistry, biophysics, and interstellar medium (ISM). In this manuscript we review the works performed by a joint combination of the experimental studies of ion–molecule reactions with synchrotron radiation and theoretical models adapted and developed to the experimental evidence. The review concludes with the perspectives of ion–molecule reactions by using FEL instrumentations as well as pump probe measurements and the initial attempt in the development of more realistic theoretical models for the prospective improvement of our predictive capability.

A localized view on molecular dissociation via electron-ion partial covariance

Inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy provides an element-specific probe of molecular structure, as core-electron binding energies are sensitive to the chemical environment. Short-wavelength femtosecond light sources, such as Free-Electron Lasers (FELs), even enable time-resolved site-specific investigations of molecular photochemistry. Here, we study the ultraviolet photodissociation of the prototypical chiral molecule 1-iodo-2-methylbutane, probed by extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses from the Free-electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) through the ultrafast evolution of the iodine 4d binding energy. Methodologically, we employ electron-ion partial covariance imaging as a technique to isolate otherwise elusive features in a two-dimensional photoelectron spectrum arising from different photofragmentation pathways. The experimental and theoretical results for the time-resolved electron spectra of the 4d3/2 and 4d5/2 atomic and molecular levels that are disentangled by this method provide a key step towards studying structural and chemical changes from a specific spectator site.

XUV-Initiated Dissociation Dynamics of Molecular Oxygen (O2)

We performed a time-resolved spectroscopy experiment on the dissociation of oxygen molecules after the interaction with intense extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) light from the free-electron laser in Hamburg at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. Using an XUV-pump/XUV-probe transient-absorption geometry with a split-and-delay unit, we observe the onset of electronic transitions in the O²⁺ cation near 50 eV photon energy, marking the end of the progression from a molecule to two isolated atoms. We observe two different time scales of 290 ± 53 and 180 ± 76 fs for the emergence of different ionic transitions, indicating different dissociation pathways taken by the departing oxygen atoms. With regard to the emerging opportunities of tuning the central frequencies of pump and probe pulses and of increasing the probe–pulse bandwidth, future pump–probe transient-absorption experiments are expected to provide a detailed view of the coupled nuclear and electronic dynamics during molecular dissociation.

Nonadiabatic Coupling Effects in the 800 nm Strong-Field Ionization-Induced Coulomb Explosion of Methyl Iodide Revealed by Multimass Velocity Map Imaging and Ab Initio Simulation Studies

The Coulomb explosion (CE) of jet-cooled CH₃I molecules using ultrashort (40 fs), nonresonant 805 nm strong-field ionization at three peak intensities (260, 650, and 1300 TW cm^-2) has been investigated by multimass velocity map imaging, revealing an array of discernible fragment ions, that is, I^q+ (q ≤ 6), CH_n⁺ (n = 0-3), CH_n²⁺ (n = 0, 2), C³⁺, H⁺, H₂⁺, and H₃⁺. Complementary ab initio trajectory calculations of the CE of CH₃I^Z+ cations with Z ≤ 14 identify a range of behaviors. The CE of parent cations with Z = 2 and 3 can be well-described using a diatomic-like representation (as found previously) but the CE dynamics of all higher CH₃I^Z+ cations require a multidimensional description. The ab initio predicted I^q+ (q ≥ 3) fragment ion velocities are all at the high end of the velocity distributions measured for the corresponding I^q+ products. These mismatches are proposed as providing some of the clearest insights yet into the roles of nonadiabatic effects (and intramolecular charge transfer) in the CE of highly charged molecular cations.

Predictions of Pre-edge Features in Time-Resolved Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy from Hole-Hole Tamm-Dancoff-Approximated Density Functional Theory

Time-resolved near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (TR-NEXAFS) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying photochemical reaction dynamics with femtosecond time resolution. In order to avoid ambiguity in TR-NEXAFS spectra from nonadiabatic dynamics simulations, core- and valence-excited states must be evaluated on equal footing and those valence states must also define the potential energy surfaces used in the nonadiabatic dynamics simulation. In this work, we demonstrate that hole-hole Tamm-Dancoff-approximated density functional theory (hh-TDA) is capable of directly simulating TR-NEXAFS spectroscopies. We apply hh-TDA to the excited-state dynamics of acrolein. We identify two pre-edge features in the oxygen K-edge TR-NEXAFS spectrum associated with the S₂ (ππ*) and S₁ (nπ*) excited states. We show that these features can be used to follow the internal conversion dynamics between the lowest three electronic states of acrolein. Due to the low, O(N²) apparent computational complexity of hh-TDA and our GPU-accelerated implementation, this method is promising for the simulation of pre-edge features in TR-NEXAFS spectra of large molecules and molecules in the condensed phase.

High density molecular jets of complex neutral organic molecules with Tesla valves

Supersonic jets of gas-phase atoms and small molecules have enabled a variety of ultrafast and ultracold chemical studies. However, extension to larger, more complex neutral molecules proves challenging for two reasons: (i) Complex molecules, such as cis-stilbene, exist in a liquid or solid phase at room temperature and ambient pressure and (ii) a unidirectional flow of high-density gaseous beams of such molecules to the interaction region is required. No delivery system currently exists that can deliver dense enough molecular jets of neutral complex molecules without ionizing or exciting the target for use in gas-phase structural dynamics studies. Here, we present a novel delivery system utilizing Tesla valves, which generates more than an order-of-magnitude denser gaseous beam of molecules compared to a bubbler without Tesla valves at the interaction region by ensuring a fast unidirectional flow of the gaseous sample. We present combined experimental and flow simulations of the Tesla valve setup. Our results open new possibilities of studying large complex neutral molecules in the gas-phase with low vapor pressures in future ultrafast and ultracold studies.

Photodissociation dynamics of halogenated aromatic molecules: the case of core-ionized tetrabromothiophene

We studied the gas-phase photodissociation of a fully halogenated aromatic molecule, tetrabromothiophene, upon core-shell ionization by using synchrotron radiation and energy-resolved multiparticle coincidence spectroscopy. Photodynamics was initiated by the selective soft X-ray ionization of three elements - C, S, and Br - leading to the formation of dicationic states by Auger decay. From a detailed study of photodissociation upon Br 3d ionization, we formulate a general fragmentation scheme, where dissociation into neutral fragments and a pair of cations prevails, but dicationic species are also produced. We conclude that dicationic tetrabromothiophene typically undergoes deferred charge separation (with one of the ions being often Br⁺) that may be followed by secondary dissociation steps, depending on the available internal energy of the parent dication. Observations suggest that the ejection of neutral bromine atoms as the first step of deferred charge separation is a prevailing feature in dicationic dissociation, although sometimes in this step the C-Br bonds appear to remain intact and the thiophene ring is broken instead. Ionization-site-specific effects are observed particularly in doubly charged fragments and as large differences in the yields of the intact parent dication. We interpret these effects, using first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations of core-hole states, as likely caused by the geometry changes during the core-hole lifetime.

Pulse Energy and Pulse Duration Effects in the Ionization and Fragmentation of Iodomethane by Ultraintense Hard X Rays

The interaction of intense femtosecond x-ray pulses with molecules sensitively depends on the interplay between multiple photoabsorptions, Auger decay, charge rearrangement, and nuclear motion. Here, we report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of the ionization and fragmentation of iodomethane (CH_{3}I) by ultraintense (∼10^{19}  W/cm^{2}) x-ray pulses at 8.3 keV, demonstrating how these dynamics depend on the x-ray pulse energy and duration. We show that the timing of multiple ionization steps leading to a particular reaction product and, thus, the product's final kinetic energy, is determined by the pulse duration rather than the pulse energy or intensity. While the overall degree of ionization is mainly defined by the pulse energy, our measurement reveals that the yield of the fragments with the highest charge states is enhanced for short pulse durations, in contrast to earlier observations for atoms and small molecules in the soft x-ray domain. We attribute this effect to a decreased charge transfer efficiency at larger internuclear separations, which are reached during longer pulses.

Site-specific interrogation of an ionic chiral fragment during photolysis using an X-ray free-electron laser

Short-wavelength free-electron lasers with their ultrashort pulses at high intensities have originated new approaches for tracking molecular dynamics from the vista of specific sites. X-ray pump X-ray probe schemes even allow to address individual atomic constituents with a 'trigger'-event that preludes the subsequent molecular dynamics while being able to selectively probe the evolving structure with a time-delayed second X-ray pulse. Here, we use a linearly polarized X-ray photon to trigger the photolysis of a prototypical chiral molecule, namely trifluoromethyloxirane (C₃H₃F₃O), at the fluorine K-edge at around 700 eV. The created fluorine-containing fragments are then probed by a second, circularly polarized X-ray pulse of higher photon energy in order to investigate the chemically shifted inner-shell electrons of the ionic mother-fragment for their stereochemical sensitivity. We experimentally demonstrate and theoretically support how two-color X-ray pump X-ray probe experiments with polarization control enable XFELs as tools for chiral recognition.

Role of the Environment in Quenching the Production of H_{3}^{+} from Dicationic Clusters of Methanol

Ionization and subsequent isomerization of organic molecules has been suggested as an important source of trihydrogen H_{3}^{+} cations in outer space. The high interest in such reactions has initiated many experimental and theoretical studies for various molecules. Here, we report measurements as well as ab initio molecular dynamics simulations on the fragmentation of dicationic methanol monomers and clusters ionized by low-energy (90 eV) electrons. Experimentally, for dicationic monomers, a fragmentation channel for the formation of H_{3}^{+} in coincidence with a COH^{+} cation is observed. The simulations show that an intermediate neutral H_{2} is formed in the first step, and its roaming around the dication ends in the formation of H_{3}^{+}. The entire reaction takes about 100-500 fs. The calculated kinetic energy release for the H_{3}^{+}+COH^{+} ion pair is in excellent agreement with the experimental result. In contrast, for the dicationic clusters, due to the possibility of distributing the two charges onto different molecules, several fast dissociation channels occur and suppress the roaming of H_{2} and formation of H_{3}^{+}. The present Letter suggests that the quenching of H_{3}^{+} formation by the chemical environment is a general phenomenon in dicationic clusters of organic molecules.

Multi-channel photodissociation and XUV-induced charge transfer dynamics in strong-field-ionized methyl iodide studied with time-resolved recoil-frame covariance imaging

The photodissociation dynamics of strong-field ionized methyl iodide (CH3I) were probed using intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation produced by the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA). Strong-field ionization and subsequent fragmentation of CH3I was initiated by an intense femtosecond infrared (IR) pulse. The ensuing fragmentation and charge transfer processes following multiple ionization by the XUV pulse at a range of pump-probe delays were followed in a multi-mass ion velocity-map imaging (VMI) experiment. Simultaneous imaging of a wide range of resultant ions allowed for additional insight into the complex dynamics by elucidating correlations between the momenta of different fragment ions using time-resolved recoil-frame covariance imaging analysis. The comprehensive picture of the photodynamics that can be extracted provides promising evidence that the techniques described here could be applied to study ultrafast photochemistry in a range of molecular systems at high count rates using state-of-the-art advanced light sources.

Demonstration of Transmission Mode Soft X-ray NEXAFS Using Third- and Fifth-Order Harmonics of FEL Radiation at SACLA BL1

We demonstrate the applicability of third- and fifth-order harmonics of free-electron laser (FEL) radiation for soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the transmission mode at SACLA BL1, which covers a photon energy range of 20 to 150 eV in the fundamental FEL radiation. By using the third- and fifth-order harmonics of the FEL radiation, we successfully recorded near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra for Ar 2p core ionization and CO2 C 1s and O 1s core ionizations. Our results show that the utilization of third- and fifth-order harmonics can significantly extend the available photon energies for NEXAFS spectroscopy using an FEL and opens the door to femtosecond pump-probe NEXAFS using a soft X-ray FEL.

Opportunities for Two-Color Experiments in the Soft X-ray Regime at the European XFEL

X-ray pump/X-ray probe applications are made possible at X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facilities by generating two X-ray pulses with different wavelengths and controllable temporal delay. In order to enable this capability at the European XFEL, an upgrade project to equip the soft X-ray SASE3 beamline with a magnetic chicane is underway. In the present paper we describe the status of the project, its scientific focus and expected performance, including start-to-end simulations of the photon beam transport up to the sample, as well as recent experimental results demonstrating two-color lasing at photon energies of 805 eV + 835 eV and 910 eV + 950 eV. Additionally, we discuss methods to analyze the spectral properties and the intensity of the generated radiation to provide on-line diagnostics for future user experiments.

Robustness of the ePIE algorithm for the complete characterization of femtosecond, extreme ultra-violet pulses

Frequency-resolved optical gating for the complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts (FROG-CRAB) is a well-known technique for the complete temporal characterization of ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses, with durations down to a few tens of attoseconds. Recently, this technique was extended to few-femtosecond XUV pulses, produced by high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gases, thanks to the implementation of a robust iterative algorithm: the extended ptychographic iterative engine (ePIE). We demonstrate, by using numerical simulations, that the ptychographic reconstruction technique is characterized by an excellent degree of convergence and robustness. We analyse the effects on pulse reconstruction of various experimental imperfections, namely, the jitter of the relative temporal delay between the XUV pulse and a suitably delayed infrared (IR) pulse and the noise of the measured FROG-CRAB spectrograms. We also show that the ePIE approach is particularly suitable for the reconstruction of incomplete FROG-CRAB spectrograms (i.e., spectrograms with a reduced number of measured time delays) and of spectrograms acquired with a reduced spectral resolution, particularly when relatively high-intensity IR pulses are employed.

Femtosecond Soft-X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Liquids with a Water-Window High-Harmonic Source

Femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful method to investigate the dynamical behavior of a system after photoabsorption in real time. So far, the application of this technique has remained limited to large-scale facilities, such as femtosliced synchrotrons and free-electron lasers (FEL). In this work, we demonstrate femtosecond time-resolved soft-X-ray absorption spectroscopy of liquid samples by combining a sub-micrometer-thin flat liquid jet with a high-harmonic tabletop source covering the entire water-window range (284-538 eV). Our work represents the first extension of tabletop XAS to the oxygen edge of a chemical sample in the liquid phase. In the time domain, our measurements resolve the gradual appearance of absorption features below the carbon K-edge of ethanol and methanol during strong-field ionization and trace the valence-shell ionization dynamics of the liquid alcohols with a temporal resolution of ∼30 fs. This technique opens unique opportunities to study molecular dynamics of chemical systems in the liquid phase with elemental, orbital, and site sensitivity.

Site-Selective Dissociation upon Sulfur L-Edge X-ray Absorption in a Gas-Phase Protonated Peptide

Site-selective dissociation induced by core photoexcitation of biomolecules is of key importance for the understanding of radiation damage processes and dynamics and for its promising use as "chemical scissors" in various applications. However, identifying products of site-selective dissociation in large molecules is challenging at the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen edges because of the high recurrence of these atoms and related chemical groups. In this paper, we present the observation of site-selective dissociation at the sulfur L-edge in the gas-phase peptide methionine enkephalin, which contains only a single sulfur atom. Near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry has revealed that the resonant S 2p → σ*_C-S excitation of the sulfur contained in the methionine side chain leads to site-selective dissociation, which is not the case after core ionization above the sulfur L-edge. The prospects of such results for the study of charge dynamics in biomolecular systems are discussed.

Coulomb explosion of CD3I induced by single photon deep inner-shell ionisation

L-shell ionisation and subsequent Coulomb explosion of fully deuterated methyl iodide, CD₃I, irradiated with hard X-rays has been examined by a time-of-flight multi-ion coincidence technique. The core vacancies relax efficiently by Auger cascades, leading to charge states up to 16+. The dynamics of the Coulomb explosion process are investigated by calculating the ions’ flight times numerically based on a geometric model of the experimental apparatus, for comparison with the experimental data. A parametric model of the explosion, previously introduced for multi-photon induced Coulomb explosion, is applied in numerical simulations, giving good agreement with the experimental results for medium charge states. Deviations for higher charges suggest the need to include nuclear motion in a putatively more complete model. Detection efficiency corrections from the simulations are used to determine the true distributions of molecular charge states produced by initial L1, L2 and L3 ionisation.

Laser-induced dynamics of molecules with strong nuclear quadrupole coupling

We present a general variational approach for computing the laser-induced rovibrational dynamics of molecules, taking into account the hyperfine effects of the nuclear quadrupole coupling. The method combines the general variational approach TROVE (Theoretical Ro-Vibrational Energies), which provides accurate rovibrational hyperfine energies and wavefunctions for arbitrary molecules, with the variational method RichMol, designed for generalized simulations of the rovibrational dynamics in the presence of external electric fields. We investigate the effect of the nuclear quadrupole coupling on the short-pulse laser alignment of a prototypical molecule CFClBrI, which contains nuclei with large quadrupole constants. The influence of the nuclear quadrupole interactions on the postpulse molecular dynamics is negligible at early times, for the first several revivals; however, at longer time scales, the effect is entirely detrimental and strongly depends on the laser intensity. This effect can be explained by dephasing in the laser-excited rotational wavepacket due to irregular spacings between the hyperfine-split nuclear spin states across different rotational hyperfine bands.

Absorption spectra at the iodine 3d ionisation threshold following the CHxI+ (x = 0-3) cation sequence

Yields of atomic iodine I^q+ (q≥ 2) fragments resulting from photoexcitation and photoionisation of the target cations CH_xI⁺ (x = 0-3) have been measured in the photon-energy range 610 eV to 670 eV, which comprises the threshold for iodine 3d ionisation. The measured ion-yield spectra show two strong and broad resonance features due to the excitation of the 3d_3/2,5/2 electrons into εf states similar to atomic iodine. In the 3d pre-edge range, electrons are excited into molecular orbitals consisting of iodine, carbon, and hydrogen atomic orbitals. These transitions have been identified by comparison with literature data and by simulations using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with the KMLYP functional. The ion-yield spectrum for CH₃I⁺ resembles the spectrum of IH⁺ [Klumpp et al., Phys. Rev. A, 2018, 97, 033401] because the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) of the H and CH₃ fragments both contain a single vacancy, only. For the molecular cations with higher number of vacancies in the valence molecular orbitals CH_xI⁺ (x = 0-2), a stronger hybridisation of the molecular orbitals occurs between the organic fragment and the iodine resulting in a change of bonding from a single σ bond in CH₃I⁺ to a triple bond including two π orbitals in CI⁺. This is reflected in the resonance energies of the observed absorption lines below the iodine 3d excitation threshold.

Multispectroscopic Study of Single Xe Clusters Using XFEL Pulses

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) deliver ultrashort coherent laser pulses in the X-ray spectral regime, enabling novel investigations into the structure of individual nanoscale samples. In this work, we demonstrate how single-shot small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements combined with fluorescence and ion time-of-flight (TOF) spectroscopy can be used to obtain size- and structure-selective evaluation of the light-matter interaction processes on the nanoscale. We recorded the SAXS images of single xenon clusters using XFEL pulses provided by the SPring-8 Angstrom compact free-electron laser (SACLA). The XFEL fluences and the radii of the clusters at the reaction point were evaluated and the ion TOF spectra and fluorescence spectra were sorted accordingly. We found that the XFEL fluence and cluster size extracted from the diffraction patterns showed a clear correlation with the fluorescence and ion TOF spectra. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the multispectroscopic approach for exploring laser–matter interaction in the X-ray regime without the influence of the size distribution of samples and the fluence distribution of the incident XFEL pulses.

Spectroscopic Signature of Chemical Bond Dissociation Revealed by Calculated Core-Electron Spectra

The advent of ultrashort soft X-ray pulse sources permits the use of established gas-phase spectroscopy methods to investigate ultrafast photochemistry in isolated molecules with element and site specificity. In the present study, we simulate excited-state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical process, the ultrafast photodissociation of methyl iodide. Using the simulation, we calculate time-dependent excited-state carbon edge photoelectron and Auger electron spectra. We observe distinct signatures in both types of spectra and show their direct connection to C-I bond dissociation and charge rearrangement processes in the molecule. We demonstrate at the CH₃I molecule that the observed signatures allow us to map the time-dependent dynamics of ultrafast photoinduced bond breaking with unprecedented detail.

Plasma channel formation in NIR laser-irradiated carrier gas from an aerosol nanoparticle injector

Aerosol nanoparticle injectors are fundamentally important for experiments where container-free sample handling is needed to study isolated nanoparticles. The injector consists of a nebuliser, a differential pumping unit, and an aerodynamic lens to create and deliver a focused particle beam to the interaction point inside a vacuum chamber. The tightest focus of the particle beam is close to the injector tip. The density of the focusing carrier gas is high at this point. We show here how this gas interacts with a near infrared laser pulse (800 nm wavelength, 120 fs pulse duration) at intensities approaching 1016 Wcm-2. We observe acceleration of gas ions to kinetic energies of 100s eV and study their energies as a function of the carrier gas density. Our results indicate that field ionisation by the intense near-infrared laser pulse opens up a plasma channel behind the laser pulse. The observations can be understood in terms of a Coulomb explosion of the created underdense plasma channel. The results can be used to estimate gas background in experiments with the injector and they open up opportunities for a new class of studies on electron and ion dynamics in nanoparticles surrounded by a low-density gas.

Real-time observation of X-ray-induced intramolecular and interatomic electronic decay in CH2I2

The increasing availability of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has catalyzed the development of single-object structural determination and of structural dynamics tracking in real-time. Disentangling the molecular-level reactions triggered by the interaction with an XFEL pulse is a fundamental step towards developing such applications. Here we report real-time observations of XFEL-induced electronic decay via short-lived transient electronic states in the diiodomethane molecule, using a femtosecond near-infrared probe laser. We determine the lifetimes of the transient states populated during the XFEL-induced Auger cascades and find that multiply charged iodine ions are issued from short-lived (∼20 fs) transient states, whereas the singly charged ones originate from significantly longer-lived states (∼100 fs). We identify the mechanisms behind these different time scales: contrary to the short-lived transient states which relax by molecular Auger decay, the long-lived ones decay by an interatomic Coulombic decay between two iodine atoms, during the molecular fragmentation.

Understanding strong X-ray induced phenomena is important for applications of X-ray free-electron laser imaging. Here, the authors show time-resolved measurements of X-ray free-electron laser induced electronic decay of CH₂I₂ molecule probed with NIR pulses and identify mechanisms behind different transient states lifetimes.

Intrinsic Instability of Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Halide Perovskite Materials

Hybrid lead halide perovskite materials are used in solar cells and show efficiencies greater than 23%. Furthermore, they are applied in light-emitting diodes, X-ray detectors, thin-film transistors, thermoelectrics, and memory devices. Lead trihalide hybrid materials contain methylammonium (MA) or formamidinium (FA) (or a mixture), or long alkylammonium halides, as alternative organic cations. However, the intrinsic stability of hybrid lead halide perovskites is not very high, and they are chemically unstable when exposed to moisture, light, or heat because of their organic contents and low formation energies. Therefore, although improvements in the chemical stability are crucial, changing the material composition is challenging because it is directly related to the desired application requirements. Fortunately, hybrid lead halide perovskites have a very high tolerance toward changes in physical properties arising from doping or addition of different cations and anions, in many cases showing improved properties. Here, the intrinsic instability of hybrid lead halide perovskites is reviewed in relation to the crystal phase and chemical stability. It is suggested that FA should be used for lead halide perovskites for chemical stability instead of MA. Furthermore, additives that stabilize the crystal phase with α-FAPbI₃ should eschew MA.

Two-body dissociation of C3H4 isomers investigated by 50 keV/u Ne8+ impact

The fragmentation of two isomers of C₃H₄, propyne (CH₃CCH) and allene (CH₂CCH₂), is investigated by 50 keV/u Ne⁸⁺ impact. Obvious isomer effects are observed by comparing the time-of-flight spectra generated from the two isomers. Six two-body fragmentation channels of C₃H₄ ²⁺ dications are identified for each isomer. CH₂ ⁺ + C₂H₂ ⁺ is found to be the most favored CC bond breaking channel for both isomers, indicating that CH₃CCH²⁺ intends to rearrange to the structure containing the CH₂ group before fragmentation. For CH bond breaking channels, it is found that the CH₃CCH which contains a CH₃ group is more efficient for H₂ ⁺ and H₃ ⁺ ejection. In addition, two-body dissociation channels of C₃H₄ ³⁺ trications are identified. While the H⁺ + C₃H₃ ²⁺ channel is observed in the fragmentation of both isomers, the H₂ ⁺ + C₃H₂ ²⁺ channel only occurs in the fragmentation of CH₃CCH³⁺. For CH₂CCH₂ ³⁺, the peak and shoulder structures in the kinetic energy release spectrum of the H⁺ + C₃H₃ ²⁺ channel are attributed to different geometries of the C₃H₃ ²⁺ product.

Making Sense of Coulomb Explosion Imaging

A multifaceted agreement between ab initio theoretical predictions and experimental measurements, including branching ratios, channel-specific kinetic energy release, and three-body momentum correlation spectra, leads to the identification of new mechanisms in Coulomb-explosion (CE) induced two- and three-body breakup processes in methanol. These identified mechanisms include direct nonadiabatic Coulomb explosion responsible for CO bond-breaking, a long-range " inverse harpooning" dominating the production of H₂⁺ + HCOH⁺, a transient proton migration leading to surprising energy partitioning in three-body fragmentation and other complex dynamics forming products such as H₂O⁺ and H₃⁺. These mechanisms provide general concepts that should be useful for analyzing future time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging of methanol as well as other molecular systems. These advances are enabled by a combination of recently developed experimental and computational techniques, using weak ultrafast EUV pulses to initiate the CE and a high-level quantum chemistry approach to follow the resulting field-free nonadiabatic molecular dynamics.

The Potential of EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB for Radiation Based Techniques

A proposal for building a Free Electron Laser, EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, is at present under consideration. This FEL facility will provide a unique combination of a high brightness GeV-range electron beam generated in a X-band RF linac, a 0.5 PW-class laser system and the first FEL source driven by a plasma accelerator. The FEL will produce ultra-bright pulses, with up to 10 12 photons/pulse, femtosecond timescale and wavelength down to 3 nm, which lies in the so called “water window”. The experimental activity will be focused on the realization of a plasma driven short wavelength FEL able to provide high-quality photons for a user beamline. In this paper, we describe the main classes of experiments that will be performed at the facility, including coherent diffraction imaging, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering and photofragmentation measurements. These techniques will allow studying a variety of samples, both biological and inorganic, providing information about their structure and dynamical behavior. In this context, the possibility of inducing changes in samples via pump pulses leading to the stimulation of chemical reactions or the generation of coherent excitations would tremendously benefit from pulses in the soft X-ray region. High power synchronized optical lasers and a TeraHertz radiation source will indeed be made available for THz and pump–probe experiments and a split-and-delay station will allow performing XUV-XUV pump–probe experiments.

Radiation damage in protein crystallography at X-ray free-electron lasers

Radiation damage is still the most limiting factor in obtaining high-resolution structures of macromolecules in crystallographic experiments at synchrotrons. With the advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) that produce ultrashort and highly intense X-ray pulses, it became possible to outrun most of the radiation-damage processes occurring in the sample during exposure to XFEL radiation. Although this is generally the case, several experimental and theoretical studies have indicated that structures from XFELs may not always be radiation-damage free. This is especially true when higher intensity pulses are used and protein molecules that contain heavy elements in their structures are studied. Here, the radiation-damage mechanisms that occur in samples exposed to XFEL pulses are summarized, results that show indications of radiation damage are reviewed and methods that can partially overcome it are discussed.

An Experimental Protocol for Femtosecond NIR/UV - XUV Pump-Probe Experiments with Free-Electron Lasers

This protocol describes key steps in performing and analyzing femtosecond pump-probe experiments that combine a femtosecond optical laser with a free-electron laser. This includes methods to establish the spatial and temporal overlap between the optical and free-electron laser pulses during the experiment, as well as important aspects of the data analysis, such as corrections for arrival time jitter, which are necessary to obtain high-quality pump-probe data sets with the best possible temporal resolution. These methods are demonstrated for an exemplary experiment performed at the FLASH (Free-electron LASer Hamburg) free-electron laser in order to study ultrafast photochemistry in gas-phase molecules by means of velocity map ion imaging. However, most of the strategies are also applicable to similar pump-probe experiments using other targets or other experimental techniques.

XUV double-pulses with femtosecond to 650 ps separation from a multilayer-mirror-based split-and-delay unit at FLASH

Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray free-electron lasers enable new scientific opportunities. Their ultra-intense coherent femtosecond pulses give unprecedented access to the structure of undepositable nanoscale objects and to transient states of highly excited matter. In order to probe the ultrafast complex light-induced dynamics on the relevant time scales, the multi-purpose end-station CAMP at the free-electron laser FLASH has been complemented by the novel multilayer-mirror-based split-and-delay unit DESC (DElay Stage for CAMP) for time-resolved experiments. XUV double-pulses with delays adjustable from zero femtoseconds up to 650 picoseconds are generated by reflecting under near-normal incidence, exceeding the time range accessible with existing XUV split-and-delay units. Procedures to establish temporal and spatial overlap of the two pulses in CAMP are presented, with emphasis on the optimization of the spatial overlap at long time-delays via time-dependent features, for example in ion spectra of atomic clusters.

CAMP@FLASH: an end-station for imaging, electron- and ion-spectroscopy, and pump-probe experiments at the FLASH free-electron laser

The non-monochromatic beamline BL1 at the FLASH free-electron laser facility at DESY was upgraded with new transport and focusing optics, and a new permanent end-station, CAMP, was installed. This multi-purpose instrument is optimized for electron- and ion-spectroscopy, imaging and pump-probe experiments at free-electron lasers. It can be equipped with various electron- and ion-spectrometers, along with large-area single-photon-counting pnCCD X-ray detectors, thus enabling a wide range of experiments from atomic, molecular, and cluster physics to material and energy science, chemistry and biology. Here, an overview of the layout, the beam transport and focusing capabilities, and the experimental possibilities of this new end-station are presented, as well as results from its commissioning.
