Crystallographic and spectroscopic characterization of a nonheme Fe(IV)-O complex

Unusual S=1 Four-Coordinate Fe(IV) Complexes Supported by Bisamide Ligands: Syntheses, Characterization, and Electronic Structures

The catalytic relevance of Fe(IV) species in non-heme iron catalysis has motivated synthetic advances in well-defined five- and six-coordinate Fe(IV) complexes for a better understanding of their fundamental electronic structures and reactivities. Herein, we report the syntheses of FeDipp2 and FeMes2, a pair of unusual four-coordinate non-heme formally Fe(IV) complexes with S=1 ground states supported by strongly donating bisamide ligands. By combining spectroscopic characterization and computational modeling, we found that small variations in ligand aryl substituents resulted in substantial changes in both structures and bonding. This work highlights the strong donor capabilities and modularity of the bisamide ligand set. More broadly, it is a critical contribution to the utilization of ligand design to modulate molecular geometries and electronic structures of low-coordinate, high-valent iron complexes.

A synthetically useful catalytic system for aliphatic C-H oxidation with a nonheme cobalt complex and m-CPBA

We report herein a synthetically useful catalytic system for aliphatic C-H oxidation with a mononuclear nonheme cobalt(II) complex and m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA). Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a high-valent cobalt-oxygen species (e.g., cobalt(IV)-oxo or cobalt(III)-oxyl) is the oxidant that effects C-H oxidation via a rate-determining hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) step.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity of Bispidine-Iron(IV)-Tosylimido Species

Reported are the synthesis and detailed studies of the iron(IV)-tosylimido complexes of two isomeric pentadentate bispidine ligands (bispidines are 3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives). This completes a series of five tosylimido complexes with comparable pentadentate amine/pyridine ligands, where the corresponding [(L)FeIV═O]2+ oxidants have been studied in detail. The characterization of the two new complexes in solution (UV-vis-NIR, Mössbauer, HR-ESI-MS) shows that these oxidants have an intermediate spin (S = 1) electronic ground state. The reactivities have been studied as oxidants in C-H activation at 1,3-cyclohexadiene and nitrogen atom transfer to thioanisole. For the latter substrate, the entire set of data for the five ligands and for both nitrogen and oxygen atom transfer is now available and the interesting observation is that oxygen atom transfer is, as expected, generally faster than nitrogen atom transfer, with the exception of the two ligands that have four and three pyridine groups oriented parallel to the Fe-O and Fe-N axes. A thorough DFT analysis indicates that this is due to steric effects in the case of the [(L)FeIV═O]2+ species, which are less important in the [(L)FeIV═NTs]2+ compounds due to partial electron transfer from the thioanisole substrate to the iron(IV)-tosylimido oxidant.

The spin-forbidden transition in iron(IV)-oxo catalysts relevant to two-state reactivity

Quintet oxoiron(IV) intermediates are often invoked in nonheme iron enzymes capable of performing selective oxidation, while most well-characterized synthetic model oxoiron(IV) complexes have a triplet ground state. These differing spin states lead to the proposal of a two-state reactivity model, where the complexes cross from the triplet to an excited quintet state. However, the energy of this quintet state has never been measured experimentally. Here, magnetic circular dichroism is used to assign the singlet and triplet excited states in a series of triplet oxoiron(IV) complexes. These transition energies are used to determine the energies of the quintet state via constrained fitting of 2p3d resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. This allowed for a direct correlation between the quintet energies and substrate C─H oxidation rates.

New Frontiers in Nonheme Enzymatic Oxyferryl Species

Non-heme mononuclear iron dependent (NHM-Fe) enzymes exhibit exceedingly diverse catalytic reactivities. Despite their catalytic versatilities, the mononuclear iron centers in these enzymes show a relatively simple architecture, in which an iron atom is ligated with 2-4 amino acid residues, including histidine, aspartic or glutamic acid. In the past two decades, a common high-valent reactive iron intermediate, the S=2 oxyferryl (Fe(IV)-oxo or Fe(IV)=O) species, has been repeatedly discovered in NHM-Fe enzymes containing a 2-His-Fe or 2-His-1-carboxylate-Fe center. However, for 3-His/4-His-Fe enzymes, no common reactive intermediate has been identified. Recently, we have spectroscopically characterized the first S=1 Fe(IV) intermediate in a 3-His-Fe containing enzyme, OvoA, which catalyzes a novel oxidative carbon-sulfur bond formation. In this review, we summarize the broad reactivities demonstrated by S=2 Fe(IV)-oxo intermediates, the discovery of the first S=1 Fe(IV) intermediate in OvoA and the mechanistic implication of such a discovery, and the intrinsic reactivity differences of the S=2 and the S=1 Fe(IV)-oxo species. Finally, we postulate the possible reasons to utilize an S=1 Fe(IV) species in OvoA and their implications to other 3-His/4-His-Fe enzymes.

Enhanced Reactivities of Iron(IV)-Oxo Porphyrin Species in Oxidation Reactions Promoted by Intramolecular Hydrogen-Bonding

High-valent iron-oxo species are one of the common intermediates in both biological and biomimetic catalytic oxidation reactions. Recently, hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) has been proved to be critical in determining the selectivity and reactivity. However, few examples have been established for mechanistic insights into the H-bonding effect. Moreover, intramolecular H-bonding effect on both C-H activation and oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reactions in synthetic porphyrin model system has not been investigated yet. In this study, a series of heme-containing iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin species with or without intramolecular H-bonding are synthesized and characterized. Kinetic studies revealed that intramolecular H-bonding can significantly enhance the reactivity of iron(IV)-oxo species in OAT, C-H activation, and electron-transfer reactions. This unprecedented unified H-bonding effect is elucidated by theoretical calculations, which showed that intramolecular H-bonding interactions lower the energy of the anti-bonding orbital of iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin species, resulting in the enhanced reactivities in oxidation reactions irrespective of the reaction type. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first extensive investigation on the intramolecular H-bonding effect in heme system. The results show that H-bonding interactions have a unified effect with iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin species in all three investigated reactions.

Assessment of new hydrogen peroxide activators in water and comparison of their active species toward contaminants of emerging concern

Advanced oxidation processes are the most efficient tool to thwart the overaccumulation of harmful organic compounds in the environment. In this direction bioinspired metal complexes may be a viable solution for oxidative degradations in water. However, their synthesis is often elaborated and their scalability consequently low. This study presents alternative easy-to-synthesize bioinspired metal complexes to promote degradations in water. The metals employed were iron and manganese ions, hence cheap and highly accessible ions. The complexes were tested toward Phenol, Estrone, Triclosan, Oxybenzone, Diclofenac, Carbamazepine, Erythromycin, Aspartame, Acesulfame K, Anisole and 2,4-Dinitrotoluene. The reaction favoured electron-rich compounds reaching a removal efficiency of over 90%. The central ion plays a crucial role. Specifically, Mn(II) induces a non-radical pathway while iron ions a predominant radical one (⋅OH is predominant). The iron systems resulted more versatile toward contaminants, while the manganese ones showed a higher turn-over number, hence higher catalytic behaviour.

Iron-Catalyzed C-H Oxygenation Using Perchlorate Enabled by Secondary Sphere Hydrogen Bonds

Perchlorate (ClO4-) is a groundwater pollutant that is challenging to remediate. We report a strategy to use Fe(II) tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) complexes featuring appended aniline hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) to promote ClO4- reduction. These complexes facilitate oxygen atom transfer from ClO4- to PPh3 and C-H oxygenation reactions of organic substrates. Catalytic reactions using 15 mol % afforded excellent yields for oxygenation of anthracene and cyclic alkyl aromatics, and this methodology tolerates aryl halides as well as heterocycles containing either O, S, or N.

Enhanced Reactivity through Equatorial Sulfur Coordination in Nonheme Iron(IV)-Oxo Complexes: Insights from Experiment and Theory

Sulfur ligation in metalloenzymes often gives the active site unique properties, whether it is the axial cysteinate ligand in the cytochrome P450s or the equatorial sulfur/thiol ligation in nonheme iron enzymes. To understand sulfur ligation to iron complexes and how it affects the structural, spectroscopic, and intrinsic properties of the active species and the catalysis of substrates, we pursued a systematic study and compared sulfur with amine-ligated iron(IV)-oxo complexes. We synthesized and characterized a biomimetic N4S-ligated iron(IV)-oxo complex and compared the obtained results with an analogous N5-ligated iron(IV)-oxo complex. Our work shows that the amine for sulfur replacement in the equatorial ligand framework leads to a rate enhancement for oxygen atom and hydrogen atom transfer reactions. Moreover, the sulfur-ligated iron(IV)-oxo complex reacts through a different reaction mechanism as compared to the N5-ligated iron(IV)-oxo complex, where the former reacts through hydride transfer with the latter reacting via radical pathways. We show that the reactivity differences are caused by a dramatic change in redox potential between the two complexes. Our studies highlight the importance of implementing a sulfur ligand into the equatorial ligand framework of nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complexes and how it affects the physicochemical properties of the oxidant and its reactivity.

The synthesis and characterization of an iron(VII) nitrido complex

Complexes of iron in high oxidation states are captivating research subjects due to their pivotal role as active intermediates in numerous catalytic processes. Structural and spectroscopic studies of well-defined model complexes often provide evidence of these intermediates. In addition to the fundamental molecular and electronic structure insights gained by these complexes, their reactivity also affects our understanding of catalytic reaction mechanisms for small molecule and bond-activation chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis, structural and spectroscopic characterization of a stable, octahedral Fe(VI) nitrido complex and an authenticated, unique Fe(VII) species, prepared by one-electron oxidation. The super-oxidized Fe(VII) nitride rearranges to an Fe(V) imide through an intramolecular amination mechanism and ligand exchange, which is characterized spectroscopically and computationally. This enables combined reactivity and stability studies on a single molecular system of a rare high-valent complex redox pair. Quantum chemical calculations complement the spectroscopic parameters and provide evidence for a diamagnetic (S = 0) d 2 Fe(VI) and a genuine S = 1/2, d 1 Fe(VII) configuration of these super-oxidized nitrido complexes.

Functional Model of Compound II of Cytochrome P450: Spectroscopic Characterization and Reactivity Studies of a FeIV-OH Complex

Herein, we show that the reaction of a mononuclear FeIII(OH) complex (1) with N-tosyliminobenzyliodinane (PhINTs) resulted in the formation of a FeIV(OH) species (3). The obtained complex 3 was characterized by an array of spectroscopic techniques and represented a rare example of a synthetic FeIV(OH) complex. The reaction of 1 with the one-electron oxidizing agent was reported to form a ligand-oxidized FeIII(OH) complex (2). 3 revealed a one-electron reduction potential of -0.22 V vs Fc+/Fc at -15 °C, which was 150 mV anodically shifted than 2 (Ered = -0.37 V vs Fc+/Fc at -15 °C), inferring 3 to be more oxidizing than 2. 3 reacted spontaneously with (4-OMe-C6H4)3C• to form (4-OMe-C6H4)3C(OH) through rebound of the OH group and displayed significantly faster reactivity than 2. Further, activation of the hydrocarbon C-H and the phenolic O-H bond by 2 and 3 was compared and showed that 3 is a stronger oxidant than 2. A detailed kinetic study established the occurrence of a concerted proton-electron transfer/hydrogen atom transfer reaction of 3. Studying one-electron reduction of 2 and 3 using decamethylferrocene (Fc*) revealed a higher ket of 3 than 2. The study established that the primary coordination sphere around Fe and the redox state of the metal center is very crucial in controlling the reactivity of high-valent Fe-OH complexes. Further, a FeIII(OMe) complex (4) was synthesized and thoroughly characterized, including X-ray structure determination. The reaction of 4 with PhINTs resulted in the formation of a FeIV(OMe) species (5), revealing the presence of two FeIV species with isomer shifts of -0.11 mm/s and = 0.17 mm/s in the Mössbauer spectrum and showed FeIV/FeIII potential at -0.36 V vs Fc+/Fc couple in acetonitrile at -15 °C. The reactivity studies of 5 were investigated and compared with the FeIV(OH) complex (3).

A tale of two topological isomers: Uptuning [FeIV(O)(Me4cyclam)]2+ for olefin epoxidation

TMC-anti and TMC-syn, the two topological isomers of [FeIV(O)(TMC)(CH3CN)]2+ (TMC = 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, or Me4cyclam), differ in the orientations of their FeIV=O units relative to the four methyl groups of the TMC ligand framework. The FeIV=O unit of TMC-anti points away from the four methyl groups, while that of TMC-syn is surrounded by the methyl groups, resulting in differences in their oxidative reactivities. TMC-syn reacts with HAT (hydrogen atom transfer) substrates at 1.3- to 3-fold faster rates than TMC-anti, but the reactivity difference increases dramatically in oxygen-atom transfer reactions. R2S substrates are oxidized into R2S=O products at rates 2-to-3 orders of magnitude faster by TMC-syn than TMC-anti. Even more remarkably, TMC-syn epoxidizes all the olefin substrates in this study, while TMC-anti reacts only with cis-cyclooctene but at a 100-fold slower rate. Comprehensive quantum chemical calculations have uncovered the key factors governing such reactivity differences found between these two topological isomers.

How Do Differences in Electronic Structure Affect the Use of Vanadium Intermediates as Mimics in Nonheme Iron Hydroxylases?

We study active-site models of nonheme iron hydroxylases and their vanadium-based mimics using density functional theory to determine if vanadyl is a faithful structural mimic. We identify crucial structural and energetic differences between ferryl and vanadyl isomers owing to the differences in their ground electronic states, i.e., high spin (HS) for Fe and low spin (LS) for V. For the succinate cofactor bound to the ferryl intermediate, we predict facile interconversion between monodentate and bidentate coordination isomers for ferryl species but difficult rearrangement for vanadyl mimics. We study isomerization of the oxo intermediate between axial and equatorial positions and find the ferryl potential energy surface to be characterized by a large barrier of ca. 10 kcal/mol that is completely absent for the vanadyl mimic. This analysis reveals even starker contrasts between Fe and V in hydroxylases than those observed for this metal substitution in nonheme halogenases. Analysis of the relative bond strengths of coordinating carboxylate ligands for Fe and V reveals that all of the ligands show stronger binding to V than Fe owing to the LS ground state of V in contrast to the HS ground state of Fe, highlighting the limitations of vanadyl mimics of native nonheme iron hydroxylases.

Redox Processes Involving Oxygen: The Surprising Influence of Redox-Inactive Lewis Acids

Metalloenzymes with heteromultimetallic active sites perform chemical reactions that control several biogeochemical cycles. Transformations catalyzed by such enzymes include dioxygen generation and reduction, dinitrogen reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction-instrumental transformations for progress in the context of artificial photosynthesis and sustainable fertilizer production. While the roles of the respective metals are of interest in all these enzymatic transformations, they share a common factor in the transfer of one or multiple redox equivalents. In light of this feature, it is surprising to find that incorporation of redox-inactive metals into the active site of such an enzyme is critical to its function. To illustrate, the presence of a redox-inactive Ca2+ center is crucial in the Oxygen Evolving Complex, and yet particularly intriguing given that the transformation catalyzed by this cluster is a redox process involving four electrons. Therefore, the effects of redox inactive metals on redox processes-electron transfer, oxygen- and hydrogen-atom transfer, and O-O bond cleavage and formation reactions-mediated by transition metals have been studied extensively. Significant effects of redox inactive metals have been observed on these redox transformations; linear free energy correlations between Lewis acidity and the redox properties of synthetic model complexes are observed for several reactions. In this Perspective, these effects and their relevance to multielectron processes will be discussed.

Spectroscopic and Theoretical Investigation of High-Spin Square-Planar and Trigonal Fe(II) Complexes Supported by Fluorinated Alkoxides

The electronic structures and spectroscopic behavior of three high-spin FeII complexes of fluorinated alkoxides were studied: square-planar {K(DME)2}2[Fe(pinF)2] (S) and quasi square-planar {K(C222)}2[Fe(pinF)2] (S') and trigonal-planar {K(18C6)}[Fe(OC4F9)3] (T) where pinF = perfluoropinacolate and OC4F9 = tris-perfluoro-t-butoxide. The zero-field splitting (ZFS) and hyperfine structure parameters of the S = 2 ground states were determined using field-dependent 57Fe Mössbauer and high-field and -frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopies. The spin Hamiltonian parameters were analyzed with crystal field theory and corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations. Whereas the ZFS tensor of S has a small rhombicity, E/D = 0.082, and a positive D = 15.17 cm-1, T exhibits a negative D = -9.16 cm-1 and a large rhombicity, E/D = 0.246. Computational investigation of the structural factors suggests that the ground-state electronic configuration and geometry of T's Fe site are determined by the interaction of [Fe(OC4F9)3]- with {K(18C6)}+. In contrast, two distinct countercations of S/S' have a negligible influence on their [Fe(pinF)2]2- moieties. Instead, the distortions in S' are likely induced by the chelate ring conformation change from δλ, observed for S, to the δδ conformation, determined for S'.

High-valent nonheme Fe(IV)O/Ru(IV)O complexes catalyze C-H activation reactivity and hydrogen tunneling: a comparative DFT investigation

A comprehensive density functional theory investigation has been presented towards the comparison of the C-H activation reactivity between high-valent iron-oxo and ruthenium-oxo complexes. A total of four compounds, e.g., [Ru(IV)O(tpy-dcbpy)] (1), [Fe(IV)O(tpy-dcbpy)] (1'), [Ru(IV)O(TMCS)] (2), and [Fe(IV)O(TMCS)] (2'), have been considered for this investigation. The macrocyclic ligand framework tpy(dcbpy) implies tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, dcbpy = 5,5'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine, and TMCS is TMC with an axially tethered -SCH2CH2 group. Compounds 1 and 2' are experimentally synthesized standard complexes with Ru and Fe, whereas compounds 1' and 2 were considered to keep the macrocycle intact when switching the central metal atom. Three reactants including benzyl alcohol, ethyl benzene, and dihydroanthracene were selected as substrates for C-H activation. It is noteworthy to mention that Fe(IV)O complexes exhibit higher reactivity than those of their Ru(IV)O counterparts. Furthermore, regardless of the central metal, the complex featuring a tpy-dcbpy macrocycle demonstrates higher reactivity than that of TMCS. Here, a thorough analysis of the reactivity-controlling characteristics-such as spin state, steric factor, distortion energy, energy of the electron acceptor orbital, and quantum mechanical tunneling-was conducted. Fe(IV)O exhibits the exchanged enhanced two-state-reactivity with the quintet reactive state, whereas Ru(IV)O has only a triplet reactive state. Both the distortion energy and acceptor orbital energy are low in the case of Fe(IV)O supporting its higher reactivity. All the investigated C-H activation processes involve a significant contribution from hydrogen tunneling, which is more pronounced in the case of Ru, although it cannot alter the reactivity pattern. Furthermore, it has also been found that, independent of the central metal, aliphatic hydroxylation is always preferable to aromatic hydroxylation. Overall, this work is successful in establishing and investigating the cause of enzymes' natural preference for Fe over Ru as a cofactor for C-H activation enzymes.

Electronic Structure and Reactivity of Mononuclear Nonheme Iron-Peroxo Complexes as a Biomimetic Model of Rieske Oxygenases: Ring Size Effects of Macrocyclic Ligands

We report the macrocyclic ring size-electronic structure-electrophilic reactivity correlation of mononuclear nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complexes bearing N-tetramethylated cyclam analogues (n-TMC), [FeIII(O2)(12-TMC)]+ (1), [FeIII(O2)(13-TMC)]+ (2), and [FeIII(O2)(14-TMC)]+ (3), as a model study of Rieske oxygenases. The Fe(III)-peroxo complexes show the same δ and pseudo-σ bonds between iron and the peroxo ligand. However, the strength of these interactions varies depending on the ring size of the n-TMC ligands; the overall Fe-O bond strength and the strength of the Fe-O2 δ bond increase gradually as the ring size of the n-TMC ligands becomes smaller, such as from 14-TMC to 13-TMC to 12-TMC. MCD spectroscopy plays a key role in assigning the characteristic low-energy δ → δ* LMCT band, which provides direct insight into the strength of the Fe-O2 δ bond and which, in turn, is correlated with the superoxo character of the iron-peroxo group. In oxidation reactions, reactivities of 1-3 toward hydrocarbon C-H bond activation are compared, revealing the reactivity order of 1 > 2 > 3; the [FeIII(O2)(n-TMC)]+ complex with a smaller n-TMC ring size, 12-TMC, is much more reactive than that with a larger n-TMC ring size, 14-TMC. DFT analysis shows that the Fe(III)-peroxo complex is not reactive toward C-H bonds, but it is the end-on Fe(II)-superoxo valence tautomer that is responsible for the observed reactivity. The hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactivity of these intermediates is correlated with the overall donicity of the n-TMC ligand, which modulates the energy of the singly occupied π* superoxo frontier orbital that serves as the electron acceptor in the HAA reaction. The implications of these results for the mechanism of Rieske oxygenases are further discussed.

Synthetic Advances for Mechanistic Insights: Metal-Oxygen Intermediates with a Macrocyclic Pyridinophane System

ConspectusMetalloenzymes, which are proteins containing earth-abundant transition-metal ions as cofactors in the active site, generate various metal-oxygen intermediates via activating a dioxygen molecule (O2) to mediate vital metabolic functions, such as the oxidative metabolism of xenobiotics and the biotransformation of naturally occurring molecules. By replicating the active sites of metalloenzymes, many bioinorganic chemists have studied the geometric and electronic properties and reactivities of model complexes to understand the nature of enzymatic intermediates and develop bioinspired metal catalysts. Among the reported model complexes, nonporphyrinic macrocyclic ligands are the predominant coordination system widely used in stabilizing and isolating diverse metal-oxygen intermediates, which allows us to extensively investigate the physicochemical characteristics of the analogs of reactive intermediates of metalloenzymes. In particular, it has been reported that the ring size of the macrocyclic ligands, defined by the number of atoms in the macrocyclic ring, drastically affects the identity of the metal-oxygen intermediate. Thus, systematic modification of the macrocyclic ligands has been a great subject being examined in various inorganic fields.In this Account, we describe synthetic advances of a macrocyclic ligand system by introducing pyridine donors into a 12-membered tetraazamacrocyclic ligand (12-TMC) that initially has 4 amine donors. Interestingly, the backbone of the pyridinophane ligand with 2 pyridine and 2 amine donors in a 12-membered ring is shown to be much more folded than in other macrocyclic ligands, thereby allowing the axial and equatorial donors to separately control the electronic structure of metal complexes. Then, we looked over independent electronic and steric effects on metal-oxygen species with thorough physicochemical analysis. The NiIII-peroxo complexes exhibit nucleophilic reactivity dependent on the steric hindrance of the second coordination sphere. Furthermore, the C-H bond strength of the second coordination sphere has also been an important factor in determining the stability of MnIV-bis(hydroxo) intermediates. Electronic tuning on CoIII-hydroperoxo intermediates results in a trend between the electron-donating abilities of para-substituents on pyridine in the pyridinophane ligand and electrophilic reactivities, from which mechanistic insights into the metal-hydroperoxo species have been gained. Importantly, the metal-oxygen intermediates supported by the pyridinophane ligand system have revealed quite challenging chemical reactions, including dioxygenase-like nitrile activation by CoIII-peroxo intermediates and the oxidation of aldehyde and aromatic compounds by manganese-oxygen intermediates. Based on the fine substitution of donors, we have addressed that those novel reactions originated from the unique framework of the pyridinophane system incorporating spin-crossover behavior and high redox potentials of the metal-oxygen intermediates. These results will be valuable for the structure-activity relationship of metal-oxygen intermediates, giving a better understanding on the enzymatic coordination system where amino acid ligands vary for specific chemical reactions.

Structure and reactivity of a seven-coordinate ruthenium acylperoxo complex

The use of metal-acylperoxo complexes as oxidants has been little explored. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of the first seven-coordinate Ru-acylperoxo complex, [RuIV(bdpm)(pic)2(mCPBA)]+ (H2bdpm = [2,2'-bipyridine]-6,6'-diylbis(diphenylmethanol); pic = 4-picoline; HmCPBA = m-chloroperbenzoic acid). This complex is a highly reactive oxidant for C-H bond activation and O-atom transfer reactions.

A Triplet Iron Carbyne Complex

Tuning the spin state of metal carbynes, which have broad applications in organic synthesis and material science, presents a formidable challenge for modern chemists as the strong field nature of carbyne ligands dictates low-spin ground spin states (S = 0 or 1/2) for known metal carbynes. Through the oxidative addition reaction of a low-coordinate iron(0) N-heterocyclic carbene complex with the C-S bond of a thioazole-2-ylidene, we synthesized the first triplet (S = 1) metal terminal carbyne, an iron cyclic carbyne complex. Different from the classical metal carbynes, the triplet complex features an LXZ-type carbyne ligand and a weak Fe≡C triple bond, which endow it with the unique reactivity pattern of facile carbyne coupling, weak affinity toward nucleophiles, and facial addition reactions with electrophiles.

Mechanistic Insights into Nitrile Activation by Cobalt(III)-Hydroperoxo Intermediates: The Influence of Ligand Basicity

The versatile applications of nitrile have led to the widespread use of nitrile activation in the synthesis of pharmacologically and industrially valuable compounds. We reported the activation of nitriles using mononuclear cobalt(III)-hydroperoxo complexes, [CoIII(Me3-TPADP)(O2H)(RCN)]2+ [R = Me (2) and Ph (2Ph)], to form cobalt(III)-peroxyimidato complexes, [CoIII(Me3-TPADP)(R-C(=NH)O2)]2+ [R = Me (3) and Ph (3Ph)]. The independence of the rate on the nitrile concentration and the positive Hammett value of 3.2(2) indicated that the reactions occur via an intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the hydroperoxide ligand to the coordinated nitrile carbon atom. In contrast, the previously reported cobalt(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [CoIII(TBDAP)(O2H)(CH3CN)]2+ (2TBDAP), exhibited the deficiency of reactivity toward nitrile. The comparison of pKa values and redox potentials of 2 and 2TBDAP showed that Me3-TPADP had a stronger ligand field strength than that of TBDAP. The density functional theory calculations for 2 and 2TBDAP support that the strengthened ligand field in 2 is mainly due to the replacement of two tert-butyl amine donors in TBDAP with methyl groups in Me3-TPADP, resulting in the compression of the Co-Nax bond lengths. These results provide mechanistic evidence of nitrile activation by the cobalt(III)-hydroperoxo complex and indicate that the basicity dependent on the ligand framework contributes to the ability of nitrile activation.

Avoiding Sabatier's Limitation on Spatially Correlated Pt-Mn Atomic Pair Sites for Oxygen Electroreduction

The development of highly active and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for the practical application of hydrogen fuel cells. However, the linear scaling relation (LSR) imposes an inherent Sabatier's limitation for most catalysts including the benchmark Pt with an insurmountable overpotential ceiling, impeding the development of efficient electrocatalysts. To avoid such a limitation, using earth-abundant metal oxides with different crystal phases as model materials, we propose an effective and dynamic reaction pathway through constructing spatially correlated Pt-Mn pair sites, achieving an excellent balance between high activity and low Pt loading. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that manipulating the intermetallic distance and charge distribution of Pt-Mn pairs can effectively promote O-O bond cleavage at these sites through a bridge configuration, circumventing the formation of *OOH intermediates. Meanwhile, the dynamic adsorption configuration transition from the bridge configuration of O2 to the end-on configuration of *OH improves *OH desorption at the Mn site within such pairs, thereby avoiding Sabatier's limitation. The well-designed Pt-Mn/β-MnO2 exhibits outstanding ORR activity and stability with a half-wave potential of 0.93 V and barely any activity degradation for 70 h. When applied to the cathode of a H2-O2 anion-exchange membrane fuel cell, this catalyst demonstrates a high peak power density of 287 mW cm-2 and 500 h of stability under a cell voltage of 0.6 V. This work reveals the adaptive bonding interactions of atomic pair sites with multiple reactant/intermediates, offering a new avenue for rational design of highly efficient atomic-level dispersed ORR catalysts beyond the Sabatier optimum.

Reactive high-spin iron(IV)-oxo sites through dioxygen activation in a metal-organic framework

In nature, nonheme iron enzymes use dioxygen to generate high-spin iron(IV)=O species for a variety of oxygenation reactions. Although synthetic chemists have long sought to mimic this reactivity, the enzyme-like activation of O2 to form high-spin iron(IV) = O species remains an unrealized goal. Here, we report a metal-organic framework featuring iron(II) sites with a local structure similar to that in α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases. The framework reacts with O2 at low temperatures to form high-spin iron(IV) = O species that are characterized using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform, in situ and variable-field Mössbauer, Fe Kβ x-ray emission, and nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopies. In the presence of O2, the framework is competent for catalytic oxygenation of cyclohexane and the stoichiometric conversion of ethane to ethanol.

An S=1 Iron(IV) Intermediate Revealed in a Non-Heme Iron Enzyme-Catalyzed Oxidative C-S Bond Formation

Ergothioneine (ESH) and ovothiol A (OSHA) are two natural thiol-histidine derivatives. ESH has been implicated as a longevity vitamin and OSHA inhibits the proliferation of hepatocarcinoma. The key biosynthetic step of ESH and OSHA in the aerobic pathways is the O2 -dependent C-S bond formation catalyzed by non-heme iron enzymes (e.g., OvoA in ovothiol biosynthesis), but due to the lack of identification of key reactive intermediate the mechanism of this novel reaction is unresolved. In this study, we report the identification and characterization of a kinetically competent S=1 iron(IV) intermediate supported by a four-histidine ligand environment (three from the protein residues and one from the substrate) in enabling C-S bond formation in OvoA from Methyloversatilis thermotoleran, which represents the first experimentally observed intermediate spin iron(IV) species in non-heme iron enzymes. Results reported in this study thus set the stage to further dissect the mechanism of enzymatic oxidative C-S bond formation in the OSHA biosynthesis pathway. They also afford new opportunities to study the structure-function relationship of high-valent iron intermediates supported by a histidine rich ligand environment.

The Nature of the Chemical Bonds of High-Valent Transition-Metal Oxo (M=O) and Peroxo (MOO) Compounds: A Historical Perspective of the Metal Oxyl-Radical Character by the Classical to Quantum Computations

This review article describes a historical perspective of elucidation of the nature of the chemical bonds of the high-valent transition metal oxo (M=O) and peroxo (M-O-O) compounds in chemistry and biology. The basic concepts and theoretical backgrounds of the broken-symmetry (BS) method are revisited to explain orbital symmetry conservation and orbital symmetry breaking for the theoretical characterization of four different mechanisms of chemical reactions. Beyond BS methods using the natural orbitals (UNO) of the BS solutions, such as UNO CI (CC), are also revisited for the elucidation of the scope and applicability of the BS methods. Several chemical indices have been derived as the conceptual bridges between the BS and beyond BS methods. The BS molecular orbital models have been employed to explain the metal oxyl-radical character of the M=O and M-O-O bonds, which respond to their radical reactivity. The isolobal and isospin analogy between carbonyl oxide R2C-O-O and metal peroxide LFe-O-O has been applied to understand and explain the chameleonic chemical reactivity of these compounds. The isolobal and isospin analogy among Fe=O, O=O, and O have also provided the triplet atomic oxygen (3O) model for non-heme Fe(IV)=O species with strong radical reactivity. The chameleonic reactivity of the compounds I (Cpd I) and II (Cpd II) is also explained by this analogy. The early proposals obtained by these theoretical models have been examined based on recent computational results by hybrid DFT (UHDFT), DLPNO CCSD(T0), CASPT2, and UNO CI (CC) methods and quantum computing (QC).

Theoretical study of the formation of metal-oxo species of the first transition series with the ligand 14-TMC: driving factors of the "Oxo Wall"

Terminal metal-oxo species of the early transition metal series are well known, whereas those for the late transition series are rare, and this is related to the "Oxo Wall". Here, we have undertaken a theoretical study on the formation of metal-oxo species from the metal hydroperoxo species of the 3d series (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) with the ligand 14-TMC (1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) via O⋯O bond cleavage. DFT calculations reveal that the barrier for O⋯O bond cleavage is higher with the late transition metals (Co, Ni, and Cu) than the early transition metals (Cr, Mn, and Fe), and the formed late metal-oxo species are also thermodynamically less stable. The higher barrier may be due to electronic repulsion because of the pairing of d electrons. In the late transition metal series, the electron goes into an antibonding orbital, which decreases the bond order and hence decreases the possibility of metal-oxo formation. Computed structural parameters and spin densities suggest that valence tautomerism occurs in the late transition metal-oxo species which remain as a metal-oxyl. Our findings support the concept of the "Oxo Wall".

Probing the Origins of Puzzling Reactivity in Fe/Mn-Oxo/Hydroxo Species toward C-H Bonds: A DFT and Ab Initio Perspective

Activation of C-H bonds using an earth-abundant metal catalyst is one of the top challenges of chemistry, where high-valent Mn/Fe-oxo(hydroxo) biomimic species play an important role. There are several open questions related to the comparative oxidative abilities of these species, and a unifying concept that could accommodate various factors influencing reactivity is lacking. To shed light on these open questions, here, we have used a combination of density functional theory (DFT) (B3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP) and ab initio (CASSCF/NEVPT2) calculations to study a series of high-valent metal-oxo species [Mn+H3buea(O/OH)] (M = Mn and Fe, n = II to V; H3buea = tris[(N'-tert-butylureaylato)-N-ethylene)]aminato towards the activation of dihydroanthracene (DHA). The H-bonding network in the ligand architecture influences the ground state-excited state gap and brings several excited states of the same spin multiplicity closer in energy, which triggers reactivity via one of those excited states, reducing the kinetic barriers for the C-H bond activation and rationalizing several puzzling reactivity trends observed in various high-valent Mn/Fe-oxo(hydroxo) species.

X-ray Spectroscopic Study of the Electronic Structure of a Trigonal High-Spin Fe(IV)═O Complex Modeling Non-Heme Enzyme Intermediates and Their Reactivity

Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has long been used for the study of high-valent iron intermediates in biological and artificial catalysts. 4p-mixing into the 3d orbitals complicates the pre-edge analysis but when correctly understood via 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and Fe L-edge XAS, it enables deeper insight into the geometric structure and correlates with the electronic structure and reactivity. This study shows that in addition to the 4p-mixing into the 3dz2 orbital due to the short iron-oxo bond, the loss of inversion in the equatorial plane leads to 4p mixing into the 3dx2-y2,xy, providing structural insight and allowing the distinction of 6- vs 5-coordinate active sites as shown through application to the Fe(IV)═O intermediate of taurine dioxygenase. Combined with O K-edge XAS, this study gives an unprecedented experimental insight into the electronic structure of Fe(IV)═O active sites and their selectivity for reactivity enabled by the π-pathway involving the 3dxz/yz orbitals. Finally, the large effect of spin polarization is experimentally assigned in the pre-edge (i.e., the α/β splitting) and found to be better modeled by multiplet simulations rather than by commonly used time-dependent density functional theory.

Selective C-H Bond Cleavage with a High-Spin FeIV-Oxido Complex

Non-heme Fe monooxygenases activate C-H bonds using intermediates with high-spin Fe^IV-oxido centers. To mimic these sites, a new tripodal ligand [pop]^3- was prepared that contains three phosphoryl amido groups that are capable of stabilizing metal centers in high oxidation states. The ligand was used to generate [Fe^IVpop(O)]^-, a new Fe^IV-oxido complex with an S = 2 spin ground state. Spectroscopic measurements, which included low-temperature absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, supported the assignment of a high-spin Fe^IV center. The complex showed reactivity with benzyl alcohol as the external substrate but not with related compounds (e.g., ethyl benzene and benzyl methyl ether), suggesting the possibility that hydrogen bonding interaction(s) between the substrate and [Fe^IVpop(O)]^- was necessary for reactivity. These results exemplify the potential role of the secondary coordination sphere in metal-mediated processes.

Structure and Reactivity of a Seven-Coordinate Ruthenium Iodosylbenzene Complex

Seven-coordinate (CN7) ruthenium-oxo species have attracted much attention as highly reactive intermediates in both organic and water oxidation. Apart from metal-oxo, other metal-oxidant adducts, such as metal-iodosylarenes, have also recently emerged as active oxidants. We reported herein the first example of a CN7 Ru-iodosylbenzene complex, [Ru^IV(bdpm)(pic)₂(O)I(Cl)Ph]⁺ (H₂bdpm = [2,2'-bipyridine]-6,6'-diylbis(diphenylmethanol); pic = 4-picoline). The X-ray crystal structure of this complex shows that it adopts a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry with Ru-O(I) and O-I distances of 2.0451(39) and 1.9946(40) Å, respectively. This complex is highly reactive, and it readily undergoes O-atom transfer (OAT) and C-H bond activation reactions with various organic substrates. This work should provide insights for the development of new highly reactive oxidizing agents based on CN7 geometry.

Visible Light-Induced Oxidation of Alcohols by a Luminescent Osmium(VI) Nitrido Complex: Evidence for the Generation of PhIO+ as a Highly Active Oxidant in the Presence of PhIO

Although alcohols are readily oxidized by a variety of oxidants, their oxidation by metal nitrido complexes is yet to be studied. We report herein visible-light-induced oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to carbonyl compounds by a strongly luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complex (OsN). The proposed mechanism involves initial rate-limiting hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) from the α-carbon of the alcohol to OsN*. Attempts to develop catalytic oxidation of alcohols by OsN* using PhIO as the terminal oxidant resulted in the formation of novel osmium(IV) iminato complexes in which the nitrido ligand is bonded to a δ-carbon of the alcohol. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that OsN* is reductively quenched by PhIO to generate PhIO⁺, which is a highly active oxidant that readily undergoes α- and δ-C-H activation of alcohols.

Selective methane oxidation by molecular iron catalysts in aqueous medium

Using natural gas as chemical feedstock requires efficient oxidation of the constituent alkanes-and primarily methane1,2. The current industrial process uses steam reforming at high temperatures and pressures3,4 to generate a gas mixture that is then further converted into products such as methanol. Molecular Pt catalysts5-7 have also been used to convert methane to methanol8, but their selectivity is generally low owing to overoxidation-the initial oxidation products tend to be easier to oxidize than methane itself. Here we show that N-heterocyclic carbene-ligated FeII complexes with a hydrophobic cavity capture hydrophobic methane substrate from an aqueous solution and, after oxidation by the Fe centre, release a hydrophilic methanol product back into the solution. We find that increasing the size of the hydrophobic cavities enhances this effect, giving a turnover number of 5.0 × 102 and a methanol selectivity of 83% during a 3-h methane oxidation reaction. If the transport limitations arising from the processing of methane in an aqueous medium can be overcome, this catch-and-release strategy provides an efficient and selective approach to using naturally abundant alkane resources.

Reactivities of iron(IV)-oxido compounds with pentadentate bispidine ligands

The Fe^IVO complexes of bispidines (3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives) are known to be highly reactive oxidants - with the tetradentate bispidine, the so far most reactive ferryl complex has been reported and two isomeric pentadentate ligands also lead to very reactive high-valent oxidants. With a series of 4 new bispidine derivatives we now try to address the question why the bispidine scaffold in general leads to very reactive oxidants and how this can be tuned by ligand modifications. The study is based on a full structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical analysis of the iron(II) precursors, spectroscopic data of the iron(IV)-oxido complexes, a kinetic analysis of the stoichiometric oxidation of thioanisole by five different bispidine‑iron(IV)-oxido complexes and on product analyses of reactions by the five ferryl oxidants with thioanisole, β-methylstyrene and cis-stilbene as substrates.

Cyclic iron tetra N-heterocyclic carbenes: synthesis, properties, reactivity, and catalysis

Cyclic iron tetracarbenes are an emerging class of macrocyclic iron N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. They can be considered as an organometallic compound class inspired by their heme analogs, however, their electronic properties differ, e.g. due to the very strong σ-donation of the four combined NHCs in equatorial coordination. The ligand framework of iron tetracarbenes can be readily modified, allowing fine-tuning of the structural and electronic properties of the complexes. The properties of iron tetracarbene complexes are discussed quantitatively and correlations are established. The electronic nature of the tetracarbene ligand allows the isolation of uncommon iron(III) and iron(IV) species and reveals a unique reactivity. Iron tetracarbenes are successfully applied in C-H activation, CO₂ reduction, aziridination and epoxidation catalysis and mechanisms as well as decomposition pathways are described. This review will help researchers evaluate the structural and electronic properties of their complexes and target their catalyst properties through ligand design.

Use of Singlet Oxygen in the Generation of a Mononuclear Nonheme Iron(IV)-Oxo Complex

Nonheme iron(III)-superoxo intermediates are generated in the activation of dioxygen (O₂) by nonheme iron(II) complexes and then converted to iron(IV)-oxo species by reacting with hydrogen donor substrates with relatively weak C-H bonds. If singlet oxygen (¹O₂) with ca. 1 eV higher energy than the ground state triplet oxygen (³O₂) is employed, iron(IV)-oxo complexes can be synthesized using hydrogen donor substrates with much stronger C-H bonds. However, ¹O₂ has never been used in generating iron(IV)-oxo complexes. Herein, we report that a nonheme iron(IV)-oxo species, [Fe^IV(O)(TMC)]²⁺ (TMC = tetramethylcyclam), is generated using ¹O₂, which is produced with boron subphthalocyanine chloride (SubPc) as a photosensitizer, and hydrogen donor substrates with relatively strong C-H bonds, such as toluene (BDE = 89.5 kcal mol^-1), via electron transfer from [Fe^II(TMC)]²⁺ to ¹O₂, which is energetically more favorable by 0.98 eV, as compared with electron transfer from [Fe^II(TMC)]²⁺ to ³O₂. Electron transfer from [Fe^II(TMC)]²⁺ to ¹O₂ produces an iron(III)-superoxo complex, [Fe^III(O₂)(TMC)]²⁺, followed by abstracting a hydrogen atom from toluene by [Fe^III(O₂)(TMC)]²⁺ to form an iron(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [Fe^III(OOH)(TMC)]²⁺, that is further converted to the [Fe^IV(O)(TMC)]²⁺ species. Thus, the present study reports the first example of generating a mononuclear nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complex with the use of singlet oxygen, instead of triplet oxygen, and a hydrogen atom donor with relatively strong C-H bonds. Detailed mechanistic aspects, such as the detection of ¹O₂ emission, the quenching by [Fe^II(TMC)]²⁺, and the quantum yields, have also been discussed to provide valuable mechanistic insights into understanding nonheme iron-oxo chemistry.

Oxoiron(IV)-dominated Heterogeneous Fenton-like Mechanism of Fe-Doped MoS2

Oxoiron(IV) species are a critical intermediate in the Fe-based Fenton-like process at circumneutral pH, and its oxidative reactivity is closely related to the ligands. An optional inorganic host material, MoS₂ , is selected to construct a highly reactive sulfur ligand coordinated Fe species in this work. The Fe species doped in MoS₂ is presented as the Fe^II centre and triggers the transformation of the 2H phase to the octahedral 1T phase MoS₂ . The role of the interaction between doped Fe and the MoS₂ host lattice on the formation of oxoiron(IV) is studied. A significant Fenton-like reactivity and a remarkable accumulation of oxoiron(IV) species were observed for Fe-MoS₂ . The quenching experiment was implemented to disclose the predominant role of oxoiron(IV) species in the Fe-MoS₂ /H₂ O₂ Fenton-like system. Furthermore, oxoiron(IV) species could transform into the ⋅O₂ ^- and ¹ O₂ , which further expedites the Fenton-like reaction.

17O Electron Nuclear Double Resonance Analysis of Compound I: Inverse Correlation between Oxygen Spin Population and Electron Donation

Although the activation of inert C-H bonds by metal-oxo complexes has been widely studied, important questions remain, particularly regarding the role of oxygen spin population (i.e., unpaired electrons on the oxo ligand) in facilitating C-H bond cleavage. In order to shed light on this issue, we have utilized ¹⁷O electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopy to measure the oxygen spin populations of three compound I intermediates in heme enzymes with different reactivities toward C-H bonds: chloroperoxidase, cytochrome P450, and a selenolate (selenocysteinyl)-ligated cytochrome P450. The experimental data suggest an inverse correlation between oxygen spin population and electron donation from the axial ligand. We have explored the implications of this result using a Hückel-type molecular orbital model and constrained density functional theory calculations. These investigations have allowed us to examine the relationship between oxygen spin population, oxygen charge, electron donation from the axial ligand, and reactivity.

Role of "S" Substitution on C-H Activation Reactivity of Iron(IV)-Oxo Cyclam Complexes: a Computational Investigation

A comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) investigation has been presented in this article to address the role of equatorial sulfur ligation in C-H activation. A non-heme iron-oxo compound with four nitrogen atoms constituting the equatorially connected macrocyclic framework (represented as N₄) [Fe(IV)═O(THC)(CH₃CN)]²⁺(THC = 1,4,8,11-tetrahydro1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) has been considered as the base compound. Other complexes have been anticipated by the sequential replacement of this nitrogen by sulfur, that is, N₄, N₃S₁, N₂S₂, N₁S₃, and S₄. Counterions, as always, have been considered to avoid the self-interaction error in DFT. Generally, the anti-conformers (with respect to equatorial N-H and Fe═O) turned out to be the most stable. It was found that with the enrichment of the equatorial sulfur atom, reactivity increases successively, that is, we get the trend N₄ < N₃S₁ < N₂S₂ < N₁S₃ < S_4. Our investigations have also verified the available experimental results where it has been reported that N₂S₂ is more reactive than N₄ in their mixed conformation. In search of insights into this typical pattern of reactivity, the interplay of several factors has been recognized, such as the distortion energy which decreases for the transition states with the addition of sulfur; the spin density on the oxygen atom which increases implying that the radical character of abstractor increases on sulfur ligation; the energy of the electron acceptor orbital (the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (σ_z²*)) which decreases continuously with the sulfur substitution; and the triplet-quintet oxidant energy gap which decreases consistently with S enrichment in the equatorial position. The computational predictions reported here, if further validated by experiments, will definitely encourage the synthesis of sulfur-ligated bio-inspired complexes instead of the ones constituting nitrogen exclusively.

Geometric isomers of dichloridoiron(III) complexes of CTMC (5,7,12,14-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane)

Di­chlorido­iron(III) com­plexes of two stereoisomers of a tetra­aza­macrocycle are examined. The stereoisomerism of the macrocycle is shown to determine the geometric isomerism of the resulting metal com­plex, and these results are com­pared to relevant previous reports.

Both trans and cis iron–CTMC com­plexes, namely, trans-di­chlorido­[(5SR,7RS,12RS,14SR)-5,7,12,14-tetra­methyl-1,4,8,11-tetra­aza­cyclo­tetra­deca­ne]iron(III) tetra­chlorido­ferrate, [Fe(C₁₄H₃₂N₄)Cl₂][FeCl₄] (1a), the analogous chloride methanol monosolvate, [Fe(C₁₄H₃₂N₄)Cl₂]Cl·CH₃OH (1b), and cis-di­chlo­rido­[(5SR,7RS,12SR,14RS)-5,7,12,14-tetra­methyl-1,4,8,11-tetra­aza­cyclo­tetra­dec­ane]iron(III) chloride, [Fe(C₁₄H₃₂N₄)Cl₂]Cl (2), were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized using X-ray diffraction. The coordination geometry of the macrocycle is dependent on the stereoisomerism of CTMC. The packing of these com­plexes appears to be strongly influenced by extensive hydro­gen-bonding inter­actions, which are in turn determined by the nature of the counter-anions (1aversus1b) and/or the coordination geometry of the macrocycle (1a/1bversus2). These observations are extended to related ferric cis- and trans-di­chloro macrocyclic com­plexes.

Determination of the iron(IV) local spin states of the Q intermediate of soluble methane monooxygenase by Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy

Soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) facilitates the conversion of methane to methanol at a non-heme Fe^IV₂ intermediate MMOH_Q, which is formed in the active site of the sMMO hydroxylase component (MMOH) during the catalytic cycle. Other biological systems also employ high-valent Fe^IV sites in catalysis; however, MMOH_Q is unique as Nature’s only identified Fe^IV₂ intermediate. Previous ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic studies have shown that MMOH_Q employs antiferromagnetic coupling of the two Fe^IV sites to yield a diamagnetic cluster. Unfortunately, this lack of net spin prevents the determination of the local spin state (S_loc) of each of the irons by most spectroscopic techniques. Here, we use Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to characterize the local spin states of the key intermediates of the sMMO catalytic cycle, including MMOH_Q trapped by rapid-freeze-quench techniques. A pure XES spectrum of MMOH_Q is obtained by subtraction of the contributions from other reaction cycle intermediates with the aid of Mössbauer quantification. Comparisons of the MMOH_Q spectrum with those of known S_loc = 1 and S_loc = 2 Fe^IV sites in chemical and biological models reveal that MMOH_Q possesses S_loc = 2 iron sites. This experimental determination of the local spin state will help guide future computational and mechanistic studies of sMMO catalysis.

Synthesis of FeIII and FeIV Cyanide Complexes Using Hypervalent Iodine Reagents as Cyano-Transfer One-Electron Oxidants

We disclose a new reactivity mode for electrophilic cyano λ3 -iodanes as group transfer one-electron oxidants to synthesize FeIII and FeIV cyanide complexes. The inherent thermal instability of high-valent FeIV compounds without π-donor ligands (such as oxido (O2- ), imido (RN2- ) or nitrido (N3- )) makes their isolation and structural characterization a very challenging task. We report the synthesis of an FeIV cyanide complex [(N3 N')FeCN] (4) by two consecutive single electron transfer (SET) processes from FeII precursor [(N3 N')FeLi(THF)] (1) with cyanobenziodoxolone (CBX). The FeIV complex can also be prepared by reaction of [(N3 N')FeIII ] (3) with CBX. In contrast, the oxidation of FeII with 1-cyano-3,3-dimethyl-3-(1H)-1,2-benziodoxole (CDBX) enables the preparation of FeIII cyanide complex [(N3 N')FeIII (CN)(Li)(THF)3 ] (2-LiTHF ). Complexes 4 and 2-LiTHF have been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and their electronic structure has been examined by Mössbauer, EPR spectroscopy, and computational analyses.

New Strategies for Direct Methane-to-Methanol Conversion from Active Learning Exploration of 16 Million Catalysts

Despite decades of effort, no earth-abundant homogeneous catalysts have been discovered that can selectively oxidize methane to methanol. We exploit active learning to simultaneously optimize methane activation and methanol release calculated with machine learning-accelerated density functional theory in a space of 16 M candidate catalysts including novel macrocycles. By constructing macrocycles from fragments inspired by synthesized compounds, we ensure synthetic realism in our computational search. Our large-scale search reveals that low-spin Fe(II) compounds paired with strong-field (e.g., P or S-coordinating) ligands have among the best energetic tradeoffs between hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and methanol release. This observation contrasts with prior efforts that have focused on high-spin Fe(II) with weak-field ligands. By decoupling equatorial and axial ligand effects, we determine that negatively charged axial ligands are critical for more rapid release of methanol and that higher-valency metals [i.e., M(III) vs M(II)] are likely to be rate-limited by slow methanol release. With full characterization of barrier heights, we confirm that optimizing for HAT does not lead to large oxo formation barriers. Energetic span analysis reveals designs for an intermediate-spin Mn(II) catalyst and a low-spin Fe(II) catalyst that are predicted to have good turnover frequencies. Our active learning approach to optimize two distinct reaction energies with efficient global optimization is expected to be beneficial for the search of large catalyst spaces where no prior designs have been identified and where linear scaling relationships between reaction energies or barriers may be limited or unknown.

Heme compound II models in chemoselectivity and disproportionation reactions

Heme compound II models bearing electron-deficient and -rich porphyrins, [FeIV(O)(TPFPP)(Cl)]- (1a) and [FeIV(O)(TMP)(Cl)]- (2a), respectively, are synthesized, spectroscopically characterized, and investigated in chemoselectivity and disproportionation reactions using cyclohexene as a mechanistic probe. Interestingly, cyclohexene oxidation by 1a occurs at the allylic C-H bonds with a high kinetic isotope effect (KIE) of 41, yielding 2-cyclohexen-1-ol product; this chemoselectivity is the same as that of nonheme iron(iv)-oxo intermediates. In contrast, as observed in heme compound I models, 2a yields cyclohexene oxide product with a KIE of 1, demonstrating a preference for C[double bond, length as m-dash]C epoxidation. The latter result is interpreted as 2a disproportionating to form [FeIV(O)(TMP+˙)]+ (2b) and FeIII(OH)(TMP), and 2b becoming the active oxidant to conduct the cyclohexene epoxidation. In contrast to 2a, 1a does not disproportionate under the present reaction conditions. DFT calculations confirm that compound II models prefer C-H bond hydroxylation and that disproportionation of compound II models is controlled thermodynamically by the porphyrin ligands. Other aspects, such as acid and base effects on the disproportionation of compound II models, have been discussed as well.

Electronic Structure and Reactivity of Dioxygen-Derived Aliphatic Thiolate-Ligated Fe-Peroxo and Fe(IV) Oxo Compounds

Herein, we examine the electronic and geometric structural properties of O₂-derived aliphatic thiolate-ligated Fe-peroxo, Fe-hydroxo, and Fe(IV) oxo compounds. The latter cleaves strong C-H bonds (96 kcal mol^-1) on par with the valine C-H bond cleaved by isopencillin N synthase (IPNS). Stopped-flow kinetics studies indicate that the barrier to O₂ binding to [Fe^II(S^Me2N₄(tren))]⁺ (3) is extremely low (E_a = 36(2) kJ mol^-1), as theoretically predicted for IPNS. Dioxygen binding to 3 is shown to be reversible, and a superoxo intermediate, [Fe^III(S^Me2N₄(tren))(O₂)]⁺ (6), forms in the first 25 ms of the reaction at -40 °C prior to the rate-determining (E_a = 46(2) kJ mol^-1) formation of peroxo-bridged [(S^Me2N₄(tren))Fe(III)]₂(μ-O₂)²⁺ (7). A log(k_obs) vs log([Fe]) plot for the formation of 7 is consistent with the second-order dependence on iron, and H₂O₂ assays are consistent with a 2:1 ratio of Fe/H₂O₂. Peroxo 7 is shown to convert to ferric-hydroxo [Fe^III(S^Me2N(tren))(OH)]⁺ (9, g_⊥ = 2.24, g_∥ = 1.96), the identity of which was determined via its independent synthesis. Rates of the conversion 7 → 9 are shown to be dependent on the X-H bond strength of the H-atom donor, with a k_H/k_D = 4 when CD₃OD is used in place of CH₃OH as a solvent. A crystallographically characterized cis thiolate-ligated high-valent iron oxo, [Fe^IV(O)(S^Me2N₄(tren))]⁺ (11), is shown to form en route to hydroxo 9. Electronic structure calculations were shown to be consistent with 11 being an S = 1 Fe(IV)═O with an unusually high ν_Fe-O stretching frequency at 918 cm^-1 in line with the extremely short Fe-O bond (1.603(7) Å).
