Long-range-interacting topological photonic lattices breaking channel-bandwidth limit

The presence of long-range interactions is crucial in distinguishing between abstract complex networks and wave systems. In photonics, because electromagnetic interactions between optical elements generally decay rapidly with spatial distance, most wave phenomena are modeled with neighboring interactions, which account for only a small part of conceptually possible networks. Here, we explore the impact of substantial long-range interactions in topological photonics. We demonstrate that a crystalline structure, characterized by long-range interactions in the absence of neighboring ones, can be interpreted as an overlapped lattice. This overlap model facilitates the realization of higher values of topological invariants while maintaining bandgap width in photonic topological insulators. This breaking of topology-bandgap tradeoff enables topologically protected multichannel signal processing with broad bandwidths. Under practically accessible system parameters, the result paves the way to the extension of topological physics to network science.

Observation of Non-Hermitian Edge Burst in Quantum Dynamics

The non-Hermitian skin effect, by which the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian are predominantly localized at the boundary, has revealed a strong sensitivity of non-Hermitian systems to the boundary condition. Here we experimentally observe a striking boundary-induced dynamical phenomenon known as the non-Hermitian edge burst, which is characterized by a sharp boundary accumulation of loss in non-Hermitian time evolutions. In contrast to the eigenstate localization, the edge burst represents a generic non-Hermitian dynamical phenomenon that occurs in real time. Our experiment, based on photonic quantum walks, not only confirms the prediction of the phenomenon, but also unveils its complete space-time dynamics. Our observation of edge burst paves the way for studying the rich real-time dynamics in non-Hermitian topological systems.

Bound-Extended Mode Transition in Type-II Synthetic Photonic Weyl Heterostructures

Photonic structures with Weyl points (WPs), including type I and type II, promise nontrivial surface modes and intriguing light manipulations for their three-dimensional topological bands. While previous studies mainly focus on exploring WPs in a uniform Weyl structure, here we establish Weyl heterostructures (i.e., a nonuniform Weyl lattice) with different rotational orientations in the synthetic dimension by nanostructured photonic waveguides. In this work, we unveil a transition between bound and extended modes on the interface of type-II Weyl heterostructures by tuning their rotational phases, despite the reversed topological order across the interface. This mode transition is also manifested from the total transmission to total reflection at the interface. All of these unconventional effects are attributed to the tilted dispersion of type-II Weyl band structure that can lead to mismatched bands and gaps across the interface. As a comparison, the type-I Weyl heterostructures lack the phase transition due to the untilted band structure. This work establishes a flexible scheme of artificial Weyl heterostructures that opens a new avenue toward high-dimensional topological effects and significantly enhances our capabilities in on-chip light manipulations.

A von-Neumann-like photonic processor and its application in studying quantum signature of chaos

Photonic quantum computation plays an important role and offers unique advantages. Two decades after the milestone work of Knill-Laflamme-Milburn, various architectures of photonic processors have been proposed, and quantum advantage over classical computers has also been demonstrated. It is now the opportune time to apply this technology to real-world applications. However, at current technology level, this aim is restricted by either programmability in bulk optics or loss in integrated optics for the existing architectures of processors, for which the resource cost is also a problem. Here we present a von-Neumann-like architecture based on temporal-mode encoding and looped structure on table, which is capable of multimode-universal programmability, resource-efficiency, phase-stability and software-scalability. In order to illustrate these merits, we execute two different programs with varying resource requirements on the same processor, to investigate quantum signature of chaos from two aspects: the signature behaviors exhibited in phase space (13 modes), and the Fermi golden rule which has not been experimentally studied in quantitative way before (26 modes). The maximal program contains an optical interferometer network with 1694 freely-adjustable phases. Considering current state-of-the-art, our architecture stands as the most promising candidate for real-world applications.

Design and fabrication of a coupled high-Q photonic nanocavity system with large coupling coefficients

In a previous work, we demonstrated a coupled cavity system where photons in one storage cavity can be transferred to another storage cavity at an arbitrary time by applying a voltage pulse to a third cavity placed in a p-i-n junction. In this work, we demonstrate methods to improve the transfer efficiency and photon lifetimes of such a coupled system. Firstly, we designed a photonic-crystal structure that achieves a large coupling coefficient without reducing the radiation quality factor compared to the previously proposed structure: The photonic-crystal design was changed to a more symmetric configuration to suppress radiation losses and then optimized using an automatic structure tuning method based on the Covariance Matrix Adaptive Evolutional Strategy (CMAES). Here we added two improvements to achieve an evolution toward the desired direction in the two-dimensional target parameter space (spanned by the coupling coefficient and the inverse radiation loss). Secondly, to improve the experimental cavity quality factors, we developed a fabrication process that reduces the surface contamination associated with the fabrication of the p-i-n junction: We covered the photonic structure with a SiO2 mask to avoid the contamination and the electrode material was changed from Al to Au/Cr to enable cleaning by a weak acid. Owing to these improvements of the cavity design and the fabrication process, the obtained system provides coupling strengths that are about three times stronger and photon lifetimes that are about two times longer, compared to the previously reported system.

On-Chip Topological Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Filters

We present an on-chip filter with a broad tailorable working wavelength and a single-mode operation. This is realized through the application of topological photonic crystal nanobeam filters employing synthesis parameter dimensions. By introducing the translation of air holes as a new synthetic parameter dimension, we obtained nanobeams with tunable Zak phases. Leveraging the bulk-edge correspondence, we identify the existence of topological cavity modes and establish a correlation between the cavity's interface morphology and working wavelength. Through experiments, we demonstrate filters with adjustable filtering wavelengths ranging from 1301 to 1570 nm. Our work illustrates the use of the synthetic translation dimension in the design of on-chip filters, and it holds potential for applications in other devices such as microcavities.

Photonic Topological Spin Pump in Synthetic Frequency Dimensions

Reducing geometrical complexity while preserving desired wave properties is critical for proof-of-concept studies in wave physics, as evidenced by recent efforts to realize photonic synthetic dimensions, isospectrality, and hyperbolic lattices. Laughlin's topological pump, which elucidates quantum Hall states in cylindrical geometry with a radial magnetic field and a time-varying axial magnetic flux, is a prime example of these efforts. Here we propose a two-dimensional dynamical photonic system for the topological pumping of pseudospin modes by exploiting synthetic frequency dimensions. The system provides the independent control of pseudomagnetic fields and electromotive forces achieved by the interplay between mode-dependent and mode-independent gauge fields. To address the axial open boundaries and azimuthal periodicity of the system, we define the adjusted local Chern marker with rotating azimuthal coordinates, proving the nontrivial topology of the system. We demonstrate the adiabatic pumping for crosstalk-free frequency conversion with wave front molding. Our approach allows for reproducing Laughlin's thought experiment at room temperature with a scalable setup.

New Horizons in Near-Zero Refractive Index Photonics and Hyperbolic Metamaterials

The engineering of the spatial and temporal properties of both the electric permittivity and the refractive index of materials is at the core of photonics. When vanishing to zero, those two variables provide efficient knobs to control light-matter interactions. This Perspective aims at providing an overview of the state of the art and the challenges in emerging research areas where the use of near-zero refractive index and hyperbolic metamaterials is pivotal, in particular, light and thermal emission, nonlinear optics, sensing applications, and time-varying photonics.

Quantum walk comb in a fast gain laser

Synthetic lattices in photonics enable the exploration of light states in new dimensions, transcending phenomena common only to physical space. We propose and demonstrate a quantum walk comb in synthetic frequency space formed by externally modulating a ring-shaped semiconductor laser with ultrafast recovery times. The initially ballistic quantum walk does not dissipate into low supermode states of the synthetic lattice; instead, the state stabilizes in a broad frequency comb, unlocking the full potential of the synthetic frequency lattice. Our device produces a low-noise, nearly flat broadband comb (reaching 100 per centimeter bandwidth) and offers a promising platform to generate broadband, tunable, and stable frequency combs.

Scalar topological photonic nested meta-crystals and skyrmion surface states in the light cone continuum

Topological photonics is rapidly expanding. However, discovering three-dimensional topological electromagnetic systems can be more challenging than electronic systems for two reasons. First, the vectorial nature of electromagnetic waves results in complicated band dispersions, and simple tight-binding-type predictions usually fail. Second, topological electromagnetic surface modes inside the light cone have very low quality factors (Q factors). Here, we propose the concept of scalar topological photonics to address these challenges. Our approach is experimentally validated by employing a nested meta-crystal configuration using connected coaxial waveguides. They exhibit scalar-wave-like band dispersions, making the search for photonic topological phases an easier task. Their surface states have skyrmion-like electric field distributions, resulting in a whole, bright surface state band inside the light cone continuum. As such, the topological surface states in our three-dimensional nested crystals can be exposed to air, making such systems well-suited for practical applications.

Simulating Chern insulators on a superconducting quantum processor

The quantum Hall effect, fundamental in modern condensed matter physics, continuously inspires new theories and predicts emergent phases of matter. Here we experimentally demonstrate three types of Chern insulators with synthetic dimensions on a programable 30-qubit-ladder superconducting processor. We directly measure the band structures of the 2D Chern insulator along synthetic dimensions with various configurations of Aubry-André-Harper chains and observe dynamical localisation of edge excitations. With these two signatures of topology, our experiments implement the bulk-edge correspondence in the synthetic 2D Chern insulator. Moreover, we simulate two different bilayer Chern insulators on the ladder-type superconducting processor. With the same and opposite periodically modulated on-site potentials for two coupled chains, we simulate topologically nontrivial edge states with zero Hall conductivity and a Chern insulator with higher Chern numbers, respectively. Our work shows the potential of using superconducting qubits for investigating different intriguing topological phases of quantum matter.

Nonlinear Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana tunneling and interferometry of extended Bose-Hubbard flux ladders

The nonlinear Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) tunneling dynamics and interferometry of an extended Bose-Hubbard flux ladder are studied. Based on the mean-field theory, the dispersion relation of the system is given, and it is found that loop structures periodically appear in the band structure and the nonlinear LZSM interference occurs naturally without Floquet engineering, which can be effectively modulated by atomic interactions. The nonlinear energy bands and the unique chirality feature of the flux ladder system can be identified through the dynamics of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling. Remarkably, the critical position of the noise in the interference pattern can be employed to identify the loop structure in the energy band, establishing an effective link between the nonlinear loop structure and LZSM interferometry. The position, intensity, symmetry, and width of interference patterns strongly depend on the magnetic field, atomic interactions, rung-to-leg coupling ratio, and energy bias, which provides an effective way to measure these parameters using the nonlinear LZSM interferometry. This paper further expands the dynamics of flux ladder systems to complex interaction regions and has potential applications in the precise measurement of related nonlinear systems.

Experimental realization of convolution processing in photonic synthetic frequency dimensions

Convolution is an essential operation in signal and image processing and consumes most of the computing power in convolutional neural networks. Photonic convolution has the promise of addressing computational bottlenecks and outperforming electronic implementations. Performing photonic convolution in the synthetic frequency dimension, which harnesses the dynamics of light in the spectral degrees of freedom for photons, can lead to highly compact devices. Here, we experimentally realize convolution operations in the synthetic frequency dimension. Using a modulated ring resonator, we synthesize arbitrary convolution kernels using a predetermined modulation waveform with high accuracy. We demonstrate the convolution computation between input frequency combs and synthesized kernels. We also introduce the idea of an additive offset to broaden the kinds of kernels that can be implemented experimentally when the modulation strength is limited. Our work demonstrate the use of synthetic frequency dimension to efficiently encode data and implement computation tasks, leading to a compact and scalable photonic computation architecture.

Quantum vortices of strongly interacting photons

Vortices are topologically nontrivial defects that generally originate from nonlinear field dynamics. All-optical generation of photonic vortices-phase singularities of the electromagnetic field-requires sufficiently strong nonlinearity that is typically achieved in the classical optics regime. We report on the realization of quantum vortices of photons that result from a strong photon-photon interaction in a quantum nonlinear optical medium. The interaction causes faster phase accumulation for copropagating photons, producing a quantum vortex-antivortex pair within the two-photon wave function. For three photons, the formation of vortex lines and a central vortex ring confirms the existence of a genuine three-photon interaction. The wave function topology, governed by two- and three-photon bound states, imposes a conditional phase shift of π per photon, a potential resource for deterministic quantum logic operations.

Multi-dimensional band structure spectroscopy in the synthetic frequency dimension

The concept of synthetic dimensions in photonics provides a versatile platform in exploring multi-dimensional physics. Many of these physics are characterized by band structures in more than one dimensions. Existing efforts on band structure measurements in the photonic synthetic frequency dimension however are limited to either one-dimensional Brillouin zones or one-dimensional subsets of multi-dimensional Brillouin zones. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to fully measure multi-dimensional band structures in the synthetic frequency dimension. We use a single photonic resonator under dynamical modulation to create a multi-dimensional synthetic frequency lattice. We show that the band structure of such a lattice over the entire multi-dimensional Brillouin zone can be measured by introducing a gauge potential into the lattice Hamiltonian. Using this method, we perform experimental measurements of two-dimensional band structures of a Hermitian and a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The measurements reveal some of the general properties of point-gap topology of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in more than one dimensions. Our results demonstrate experimental capabilities to fully characterize high-dimensional physical phenomena in the photonic synthetic frequency dimension.

Topological Metamaterials

The topological properties of an object, associated with an integer called the topological invariant, are global features that cannot change continuously but only through abrupt variations, hence granting them intrinsic robustness. Engineered metamaterials (MMs) can be tailored to support highly nontrivial topological properties of their band structure, relative to their electronic, electromagnetic, acoustic and mechanical response, representing one of the major breakthroughs in physics over the past decade. Here, we review the foundations and the latest advances of topological photonic and phononic MMs, whose nontrivial wave interactions have become of great interest to a broad range of science disciplines, such as classical and quantum chemistry. We first introduce the basic concepts, including the notion of topological charge and geometric phase. We then discuss the topology of natural electronic materials, before reviewing their photonic/phononic topological MM analogues, including 2D topological MMs with and without time-reversal symmetry, Floquet topological insulators, 3D, higher-order, non-Hermitian and nonlinear topological MMs. We also discuss the topological aspects of scattering anomalies, chemical reactions and polaritons. This work aims at connecting the recent advances of topological concepts throughout a broad range of scientific areas and it highlights opportunities offered by topological MMs for the chemistry community and beyond.

Reconfigurable refraction manipulation at synthetic temporal interfaces with scalar and vector gauge potentials

Photonic gauge potentials, including scalar and vector ones, play fundamental roles in emulating photonic topological effects and for enabling intriguing light transport dynamics. While previous studies mainly focus on manipulating light propagation in uniformly distributed gauge potentials, here we create a series of gauge-potential interfaces with different orientations in a nonuniform discrete-time quantum walk and demonstrate various reconfigurable temporal-refraction effects. We show that for a lattice-site interface with the potential step along the lattice direction, the scalar potentials can yield total internal reflection (TIR) or Klein tunneling, while vector potentials manifest direction-invariant refractions. We also reveal the existence of penetration depth for the temporal TIR by demonstrating frustrated TIR with a double lattice-site interface structure. By contrast, for an interface emerging in the time-evolution direction, the scalar potentials have no effect on the packet propagation, while the vector potentials can enable birefringence, through which we further create a "temporal superlens" to achieve time-reversal operations. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate electric and magnetic Aharonov-Bohm effects using combined lattice-site and evolution-step interfaces of either scalar or vector potential. Our work initiates the creation of artificial heterointerfaces in synthetic time dimension by employing nonuniformly and reconfigurable distributed gauge potentials. This paradigm may find applications in optical pulse reshaping, fiber-optic communications, and quantum simulations.

Moiré Lattice in One-Dimensional Synthetic Frequency Dimension

The moiré lattice has recently attracted broad interest in both solid-state physics and photonics where exotic phenomena in manipulating the quantum states are explored. In this work, we study the one-dimensional (1D) analogs of "moiré" lattices in a synthetic frequency dimension constructed by coupling two resonantly modulated ring resonators with different lengths. Unique features associated with the flatband manipulation as well as the flexible control of localization position inside each unit cell in the frequency dimension have been found, which can be controlled via the choice of flatband. Our work therefore provides insight into simulating moiré physics in 1D synthetic frequency space, which holds important promise for potential applications toward optical information processing.

Metasurface-based realization of photonic time crystals

Photonic time crystals are artificial materials whose electromagnetic properties are uniform in space but periodically vary in time. The synthesis of these materials and experimental observation of their physics remain very challenging because of the stringent requirement for uniform modulation of material properties in volumetric samples. In this work, we extend the concept of photonic time crystals to two-dimensional artificial structures-metasurfaces. We demonstrate that time-varying metasurfaces not only preserve key physical properties of volumetric photonic time crystals despite their simpler topology but also host common momentum bandgaps shared by both surface and free-space electromagnetic waves. On the basis of a microwave metasurface design, we experimentally confirmed the exponential wave amplification inside a momentum bandgap and the possibility to probe bandgap physics by external (free-space) excitations. The proposed metasurface serves as a straightforward material platform for realizing emerging photonic space-time crystals and as a realistic system for the amplification of surface-wave signals in future wireless communications.

Direct extraction of topological Zak phase with the synthetic dimension

Measuring topological invariants is an essential task in characterizing topological phases of matter. They are usually obtained from the number of edge states due to the bulk-edge correspondence or from interference since they are integrals of the geometric phases in the energy band. It is commonly believed that the bulk band structures could not be directly used to obtain the topological invariants. Here, we implement the experimental extraction of Zak phase from the bulk band structures of a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in the synthetic frequency dimension. Such synthetic SSH lattices are constructed in the frequency axis of light, by controlling the coupling strengths between the symmetric and antisymmetric supermodes of two bichromatically driven rings. We measure the transmission spectra and obtain the projection of the time-resolved band structure on lattice sites, where a strong contrast between the non-trivial and trivial topological phases is observed. The topological Zak phase is naturally encoded in the bulk band structures of the synthetic SSH lattices, which can hence be experimentally extracted from the transmission spectra in a fiber-based modulated ring platform using a laser with telecom wavelength. Our method of extracting topological phases from the bulk band structure can be further extended to characterize topological invariants in higher dimensions, while the exhibited trivial and non-trivial transmission spectra from the topological transition may find future applications in optical communications.

Optomechanics and quantum phase of the Bose-Einstein condensate with the cavity mediated spin-orbit coupling

We investigated the optomechanical dynamics and explored the quantum phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring cavity. The interaction between the atoms and the cavity field in the running wave mode induces a semiquantized spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the atoms. We found that the evolution of the magnetic excitations of the matter field resembles that of an optomechanical oscillator moving in a viscous optical medium, with very good integrability and traceability, regardless of the atomic interaction. Moreover, the light-atom coupling induces a sign-changeable long-range interatomic interaction, which reshapes the typical energy spectrum of the system in a drastic manner. As a result, a new quantum phase featuring a high quantum degeneracy was found in the transitional area for SOC. Our scheme is immediately realizable and the results are measurable in experiments.

Artificial Non-Abelian Lattice Gauge Fields for Photons in the Synthetic Frequency Dimension

Non-Abelian gauge fields give rise to nontrivial topological physics. Here we develop a scheme to create an arbitrary SU(2) lattice gauge field for photons in the synthetic frequency dimension using an array of dynamically modulated ring resonators. The photon polarization is taken as the spin basis to implement the matrix-valued gauge fields. Using a non-Abelian generalization of the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian as a specific example, we show that the measurement of the steady-state photon amplitudes inside the resonators can reveal the band structures of the Hamiltonian, which show signatures of the underlying non-Abelian gauge field. These results provide opportunities to explore novel topological phenomena associated with non-Abelian lattice gauge fields in photonic systems.

Observation of Weyl Interface States in Non-Hermitian Synthetic Photonic Systems

Weyl medium has triggered remarkable interest owing to its nontrivial topological edge states in 3D photonic band structures that were mainly revealed as surface modes yet. It is undoubted that the connection of two different Weyl media will give rise to more fruitful physics at their interface, while they face extreme difficulty in high-dimensional lattice matching. Here, we successfully demonstrate the non-Hermitian Weyl interface physics in complex synthetic parameter space, which is implemented in a loss-controlled silicon waveguide array. By establishing non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the parameter space, new Weyl interfaces with distinct topological origins are predicted and experimentally observed in silicon waveguides. Significantly, our Letter exploits the non-Hermitian parameter to create the synthetic dimension by manipulating the non-Hermitian order, which successfully circumvents the difficulty in lattice matching for high-dimensional interfaces. The revealed rich topological Weyl interface states and their phase transitions in silicon waveguide platform further imply potentials in chip-scale photonics integrations.

Floquet Superradiance Lattices in Thermal Atoms

Floquet modulation has been widely used in optical lattices for coherent control of quantum gases, in particular for synthesizing artificial gauge fields and simulating topological matters. However, such modulation induces heating which can overwhelm the signal of quantum dynamics in ultracold atoms. Here we report that the thermal motion, instead of being a noise source, provides a new control knob in Floquet-modulated superradiance lattices, which are momentum-space tight-binding lattices of collectively excited states of atoms. The Doppler shifts combined with Floquet modulation provide effective forces along arbitrary directions in a lattice in frequency and momentum dimensions. Dynamic localization, dynamic delocalization, and chiral edge currents can be simultaneously observed from a single transport spectrum of superradiance lattices in thermal atoms. Our Letter paves a way for simulating Floquet topological matters in room-temperature atoms and facilitates their applications in photonic devices.

Mirror-induced reflection in the frequency domain

Mirrors are ubiquitous in optics and are used to control the propagation of optical signals in space. Here we propose and demonstrate frequency domain mirrors that provide reflections of the optical energy in a frequency synthetic dimension, using electro-optic modulation. First, we theoretically explore the concept of frequency mirrors with the investigation of propagation loss, and reflectivity in the frequency domain. Next, we explore the mirror formed through polarization mode-splitting in a thin-film lithium niobate micro-resonator. By exciting the Bloch waves of the synthetic frequency crystal with different wave vectors, we show various states formed by the interference between forward propagating and reflected waves. Finally, we expand on this idea, and generate tunable frequency mirrors as well as demonstrate trapped states formed by these mirrors using coupled lithium niobate micro-resonators. The ability to control the flow of light in the frequency domain could enable a wide range of applications, including the study of random walks, boson sampling, frequency comb sources, optical computation, and topological photonics. Furthermore, demonstration of optical elements such as cavities, lasers, and photonic crystals in the frequency domain, may be possible.

Measuring Zak phase in room-temperature atoms

Cold atoms provide a flexible platform for synthesizing and characterizing topological matter, where geometric phases play a central role. However, cold atoms are intrinsically prone to thermal noise, which can overwhelm the topological response and hamper promised applications. On the other hand, geometric phases also determine the energy spectra of particles subjected to a static force, based on the polarization relation between Wannier-Stark ladders and geometric Zak phases. By exploiting this relation, we develop a method to extract geometric phases from energy spectra of room-temperature superradiance lattices, which are momentum-space lattices of timed Dicke states. In such momentum-space lattices the thermal motion of atoms, instead of being a source of noise, provides effective forces which lead to spectroscopic signatures of the Zak phases. We measure Zak phases directly from the anti-crossings between Wannier-Stark ladders in the Doppler-broadened absorption spectra of superradiance lattices. Our approach paves the way of measuring topological invariants and developing their applications in room-temperature atoms.

Manipulating electromagnetic waves in a cavity-waveguide system with nontrivial and trivial modes

The coupled cavity-waveguide approach provides a flexible platform to design integrated photonic devices that are widely applied in optical communications and information processing. Topological photonic crystals that can excite the nontrivial edge state (ES) and corner state (CS) have an unprecedented capability to manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves, leading to a variety of unusual functionalities that are impossible to achieve with conventional cavity-waveguide systems. In this Letter, two-dimensional photonic crystals consisting of an ES waveguide, a CS cavity, and a trivial cavity are proposed as a means to robustly control the transmission characteristics of electromagnetic waves. As a proof-of-principle example, the analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) that is tolerated in disorders due to the robustness of the CS is numerically demonstrated. In addition, the analog of multi-EIT is also verified by introducing a trivial cavity with two degenerate orthogonal modes. This unique approach for robustly manipulating EM waves may open an avenue to the design of high-performance filters, modulators, and on-chip processors.

Enabling scalable optical computing in synthetic frequency dimension using integrated cavity acousto-optics

Optical computing with integrated photonics brings a pivotal paradigm shift to data-intensive computing technologies. However, the scaling of on-chip photonic architectures using spatially distributed schemes faces the challenge imposed by the fundamental limit of integration density. Synthetic dimensions of light offer the opportunity to extend the length of operand vectors within a single photonic component. Here, we show that large-scale, complex-valued matrix-vector multiplications on synthetic frequency lattices can be performed using an ultra-efficient, silicon-based nanophotonic cavity acousto-optic modulator. By harnessing the resonantly enhanced strong electro-optomechanical coupling, we achieve, in a single such modulator, the full-range phase-coherent frequency conversions across the entire synthetic lattice, which constitute a fully connected linear computing layer. Our demonstrations open up the route toward the experimental realizations of frequency-domain integrated optical computing systems simultaneously featuring very large-scale data processing and small device footprints.

Photonic topological insulator induced by a dislocation in three dimensions

The hallmark of topological insulators (TIs) is the scatter-free propagation of waves in topologically protected edge channels¹. This transport is strictly chiral on the outer edge of the medium and therefore capable of bypassing sharp corners and imperfections, even in the presence of substantial disorder. In photonics, two-dimensional (2D) topological edge states have been demonstrated on several different platforms^2-4 and are emerging as a promising tool for robust lasers⁵, quantum devices^6-8 and other applications. More recently, 3D TIs were demonstrated in microwaves⁹ and  acoustic waves^10-13, where the topological protection in the latter  is induced by dislocations. However, at optical frequencies, 3D photonic TIs have so far remained out of experimental reach. Here we demonstrate a photonic TI with protected topological surface states in three dimensions. The topological protection is enabled by a screw dislocation. For this purpose, we use the concept of synthetic dimensions^14-17 in a 2D photonic waveguide array¹⁸ by introducing a further modal dimension to transform the system into a 3D topological system. The lattice dislocation endows the system with edge states propagating along 3D trajectories, with topological protection akin to strong photonic TIs^19,20. Our work paves the way for utilizing 3D topology in photonic science and technology.

Technologically feasible quasi-edge states and topological Bloch oscillation in the synthetic space

The dimensionality of a physical system is one of the major parameters defining its physical properties. The recently introduced concept of synthetic dimension has made it possible to arbitrarily manipulate the system of interest and harness light propagation in different ways. It also facilitates the transformative architecture of system-on-a-chip devices enabling far reaching applications such as optical isolation. In this report, a novel architecture based on dynamically-modulated waveguide arrays with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger configuration in the spatial dimension is proposed and investigated with an eye on a practical implementation. The propagation of light through the one-dimensional waveguide arrays mimics time evolution of the field in a synthetic two-dimensional lattice. The addition of the effective gauge potential leads to an exotic topologically protected one-way transmission along adjacent boundary. A cosine-shape isolated band, which supports the topological Bloch oscillation in the frequency dimension under the effective constant force, appears and is localized at the spatial boundary being robust against small perturbations. This work paves the way to improved light transmission capabilities under topological protections in both spatial and spectral regimes and provides a novel platform based on a technologically feasible lithium niobate platform for optical computing and communication.

Creating boundaries along a synthetic frequency dimension

Synthetic dimensions have garnered widespread interest for implementing high dimensional classical and quantum dynamics on low-dimensional geometries. Synthetic frequency dimensions, in particular, have been used to experimentally realize a plethora of bulk physics effects. However, in synthetic frequency dimension there has not been a demonstration of a boundary which is of paramount importance in topological physics due to the bulk-edge correspondence. Here we construct boundaries in the frequency dimension of dynamically modulated ring resonators by strongly coupling an auxiliary ring. We explore various effects associated with such boundaries, including confinement of the spectrum of light, discretization of the band structure, and the interaction of boundaries with one-way chiral modes in a quantum Hall ladder, which exhibits topologically robust spectral transport. Our demonstration of sharp boundaries fundamentally expands the capability of exploring topological physics, and has applications in classical and quantum information processing in synthetic frequency dimensions.

Temporal modulation brings metamaterials into new era

Temporal modulations in photonics bring many exotic optical phenomena in the time dimension while metamaterials provide powerful ways in manipulating light in the spatial domain. The authors envision the connection, Floquet Metamaterials, may deliver novel opportunities in nanophotonics.

Tracking Valley Topology with Synthetic Weyl Paths

Inspired by the newly emergent valleytronics, great interest has been attracted to the topological valley transport in classical metacrystals. The presence of nontrivial domain-wall states is interpreted with a concept of valley Chern number, which is well defined only in the limit of small band gap. Here, we propose a new visual angle to track the intricate valley topology in classical systems. Benefiting from the controllability of our acoustic metacrystals, we construct Weyl points in synthetic three-dimensional momentum space through introducing an extra structural parameter (rotation angle here). As such, the two-dimensional valley-projected band topology can be tracked with the strictly quantized topological charge in three-dimensional Weyl crystal, which features open surface arcs connecting the synthetic Weyl points and gapless chiral surface states along specific Weyl paths. All theoretical predictions are conclusively identified by our acoustic experiments. Our findings may promote the development of topological valley physics, which is less well defined yet under hot debate in multiple physical disciplines.

On-chip nanophotonic topological rainbow

The era of Big Data requires nanophotonic chips to have large information processing capacity. Multiple frequency on-chip nanophotonic devices are highly desirable for density integration, but such devices are more susceptible to structural imperfection because of their nano-scale. Topological photonics provides a robust platform for next-generation nanophotonic chips. Here we give an experimental report of an on-chip nanophotonic topological rainbow realized by employing a translational deformation freedom as a synthetic dimension. The topological rainbow can separate, slow, and trap topological photonic states of different frequencies into different positions. A homemade scattering scanning near-field optical microscope with high resolution is introduced to directly measure the topological rainbow effect of the silicon-based photonic chip. The topological rainbow based on synthetic dimension have no restrictions for optical lattice types, symmetries, materials, wavelength band, and is easy for on-chip integration. This work builds a bridge between silicon chip technologies and topological photonics.

Here the authors provide the experimental observation of a topological rainbow in a silicon-based nanophotonic chip. The system is robust against disorders allows to separate and trap topological photonic states of different wavelength into different positions.

Topological band structure via twisted photons in a degenerate cavity

Synthetic dimensions based on particles' internal degrees of freedom, such as frequency, spatial modes and arrival time, have attracted significant attention. They offer ideal large-scale lattices to simulate nontrivial topological phenomena. Exploring more synthetic dimensions is one of the paths toward higher dimensional physics. In this work, we design and experimentally control the coupling among synthetic dimensions consisting of the intrinsic photonic orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum degrees of freedom in a degenerate optical resonant cavity, which generates a periodically driven spin-orbital coupling system. We directly characterize the system's properties, including the density of states, energy band structures and topological windings, through the transmission intensity measurements. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for exploring the spatial modes of twisted photons as the synthetic dimension, which paves the way to design rich topological physics in a highly compact platform.

Observation of Weyl exceptional rings in thermal diffusion

Thermal diffusion is dissipative and strongly related to non-Hermitian physics. At the same time, non-Hermitian Weyl systems have spurred tremendous interest across photonics and acoustics. This correlation has been long ignored and hence shed little light upon the question of whether the Weyl exceptional ring (WER) in thermal diffusion could exist. Intuitively, thermal diffusion provides no real parameter dimensions, thus prohibiting a topological nature and WER. This work breaks this perception by imitating synthetic dimensions via two spatiotemporal advection pairs. The WER is achieved in thermal diffusive systems. Both surface-like and bulk states are demonstrated by coupling two WERs with opposite topological charges. These findings extend topological notions to diffusions and motivate investigation of non-Hermitian diffusive and dissipative control.

A non-Hermitian Weyl equation indispensably requires a three-dimensional (3D) real/synthetic space, and it is thereby perceived that a Weyl exceptional ring (WER) will not be present in thermal diffusion given its purely dissipative nature. Here, we report a recipe for establishing a 3D parameter space to imitate thermal spinor field. Two orthogonal pairs of spatiotemporally modulated advections are employed to serve as two synthetic parameter dimensions, in addition to the inherent dimension corresponding to heat exchanges. We first predict the existence of WER in our hybrid conduction–advection system and experimentally observe the WER thermal signatures verifying our theoretical prediction. When coupling two WERs of opposite topological charges, the system further exhibits surface-like and bulk topological states, manifested as stationary and continuously changing thermal processes, respectively, with good robustness. Our findings reveal the long-ignored topological nature in thermal diffusion and may empower distinct paradigms for general diffusion and dissipation controls.

Flexible light manipulation in non-Hermitian frequency Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice

Recently, studies on non-Hermitian topologic physics have attracted considerable attention. The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), as a remarkable phenomenon in the non-Hermitian lattice, has been demonstrated in coupled ring resonators and photonic mesh lattices. However, there is a scarcity of work on the realization of NHSEs in synthetic dimensions, owing to inaccessible anisotropic coupling. This limits the potential for exploring non-Hermitian topologic physics in on-chip integrated optical systems. In this work, we implement a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger topologic insulator in the synthetic frequency dimension, and the NHSE and topologic edge state are manifested. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the exotic chiral Zener tunneling can also be realized. Our system provides a versatile platform to explore and exploit non-Hermitian topologic physics on a chip and can have impacts on flexible light manipulation in frequency domains.

Synthetic dimension band structures on a Si CMOS photonic platform

Synthetic dimensions, which simulate spatial coordinates using nonspatial degrees of freedom, are drawing interest in topological science and other fields for modeling higher-dimensional phenomena on simple structures. We present the first realization of a synthetic frequency dimension on a silicon ring resonator integrated photonic device fabricated using a CMOS process. We confirm that its coupled modes correspond to a one-dimensional tight-binding model through acquisition of up to 280-GHz bandwidth optical frequency comb-like spectra and by measuring synthetic band structures. Furthermore, we realized two types of gauge potentials along the frequency dimension and probed their effects through the associated band structures. An electric field analog was produced via modulation detuning, whereas effective magnetic fields were induced using synchronized nearest- and second nearest-neighbor couplings. Creation of coupled mode lattices and two effective forces on a monolithic Si CMOS device represents a key step toward wider adoption of topological principles.

Synthetic Three-Dimensional Z×Z_{2} Topological Insulator in an Elastic Metacrystal

We report a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) formed by stacking identical layers of Chern insulators in a hybrid real-synthetic space. By introducing staggered interlayer hopping that respects mirror symmetry, the bulk bands possess an additional Z_{2} topological invariant along the stacking dimension, which, together with the nontrivial Chern numbers, endows the system with a Z×Z_{2} topology. A 4-tuple topological index characterizes the system's bulk bands. Consequently, two distinct types of topological surface modes (TSMs) are found localized on different surfaces. Type-I TSMs are gapless and are protected by Chern numbers, whereas type-II gapped TSMs are protected by Z_{2} bulk polarization in the stacking direction. Remarkably, each type-II TSM band is also topologically nontrivial, giving rise to second-order topological hinge modes (THMs). Both types of TSMs and the THMs are experimentally observed in an elastic metacrystal.

Four-band non-Abelian topological insulator and its experimental realization

Very recently, increasing attention has been focused on non-Abelian topological charges, e.g., the quaternion group Q8. Different from Abelian topological band insulators, these systems involve multiple entangled bulk bandgaps and support nontrivial edge states that manifest the non-Abelian topological features. Furthermore, a system with an even or odd number of bands will exhibit a significant difference in non-Abelian topological classification. To date, there has been scant research investigating even-band non-Abelian topological insulators. Here, we both theoretically explore and experimentally realize a four-band PT (inversion and time-reversal) symmetric system, where two new classes of topological charges as well as edge states are comprehensively studied. We illustrate their difference in the four-dimensional (4D) rotation sense on the stereographically projected Clifford tori. We show the evolution of the bulk topology by extending the 1D Hamiltonian onto a 2D plane and provide the accompanying edge state distributions following an analytical method. Our work presents an exhaustive study of four-band non-Abelian topological insulators and paves the way towards other even-band systems.

Non-reciprocal population dynamics in a quantum trimer

We study a quantum trimer of coupled two-level systems beyond the single-excitation sector, where the coherent coupling constants are ornamented by a complex phase. Accounting for losses and gain in an open quantum systems approach, we show how the mean populations of the states in the system crucially depend on the accumulated phase in the trimer. Namely, for non-trivial accumulated phases, the population dynamics and the steady states display remarkable non-reciprocal behaviour in both the singly and doubly excited manifolds. Furthermore, while the directionality of the resultant chiral current is primarily determined by the accumulated phase in the loop, the sign of the flow may also change depending on the coupling strength and the amount of gain in the system. This directionality paves the way for experimental studies of chiral currents at the nanoscale, where the phases of the complex hopping parameters are modulated by magnetic or synthetic magnetic fields.

Tunable frequency matching for efficient four-wave-mixing Bragg scattering in microrings

We propose and theoretically study a tunable frequency matching method for four-wave-mixing Bragg-scattering frequency conversion in microring resonators. A tunable coupling between the clockwise and counterclockwise propagating modes in the resonators was designed to introduce adjustable mode splitting, thus compensating for the frequency mismatching under different wavelengths. Using a silicon nitride ring resonator as an example, we showed that the tuning bandwidth approaches 35 number of FSRs. Numerical simulations further revealed that the phase-matching strategy is valid under different wavelength combinations and is robust to variations in waveguide geometry and fabrication. These results suggest promising applications in high-efficiency frequency conversion, integrated nonlinear photonics, and quantum optics.

Topological complex-energy braiding of non-Hermitian bands

Effects connected with the mathematical theory of knots¹ emerge in many areas of science, from physics^2,3 to biology⁴. Recent theoretical work discovered that the braid group characterizes the topology of non-Hermitian periodic systems⁵, where the complex band energies can braid in momentum space. However, such braids of complex-energy bands have not been realized or controlled experimentally. Here, we introduce a tight-binding lattice model that can achieve arbitrary elements in the braid group of two strands 𝔹₂. We experimentally demonstrate such topological complex-energy braiding of non-Hermitian bands in a synthetic dimension^6,7. Our experiments utilize frequency modes in two coupled ring resonators, one of which undergoes simultaneous phase and amplitude modulation. We observe a wide variety of two-band braiding structures that constitute representative instances of links and knots, including the unlink, the unknot, the Hopf link and the trefoil. We also show that the handedness of braids can be changed. Our results provide a direct demonstration of the braid-group characterization of non-Hermitian topology and open a pathway for designing and realizing topologically robust phases in open classical and quantum systems.

Topological holographic quench dynamics in a synthetic frequency dimension

The notion of topological phases extended to dynamical systems stimulates extensive studies, of which the characterization of nonequilibrium topological invariants is a central issue and usually necessitates the information of quantum dynamics in both the time and momentum dimensions. Here, we propose the topological holographic quench dynamics in synthetic dimension, and also show it provides a highly efficient scheme to characterize photonic topological phases. A pseudospin model is constructed with ring resonators in a synthetic lattice formed by frequencies of light, and the quench dynamics is induced by initializing a trivial state, which evolves under a topological Hamiltonian. Our key prediction is that the complete topological information of the Hamiltonian is encoded in quench dynamics solely in the time dimension, and is further mapped to lower-dimensional space, manifesting the holographic features of the dynamics. In particular, two fundamental time scales emerge in the dynamical evolution, with one mimicking the topological band on the momentum dimension and the other characterizing the residue time evolution of the state after the quench. For this, a universal duality between the quench dynamics and the equilibrium topological phase of the spin model is obtained in the time dimension by extracting information from the field evolution dynamics in modulated ring systems in simulations. This work also shows that the photonic synthetic frequency dimension provides an efficient and powerful way to explore the topological nonequilibrium dynamics.

Configurable Phase Transitions in a Topological Thermal Material

Diffusive nature of thermal transportation fundamentally restricts topological characteristics due to the absence of a sufficient parametric space with complex dimensionalities. Here, we create an orthogonal advection space with two advective pairs to reveal the unexplored topological transitions in thermal material. We demonstrate four types of configurable thermal phases, including the nontrivial dynamic-equilibrium distribution, nonchiral steplike π-phase transition, and another two trivial profiles related to the anti-parity-time symmetry nature. Our findings provide a recipe for realizing a topologically robust thermal system under arbitrary perturbations.

Quantum Simulation of the Bosonic Creutz Ladder with a Parametric Cavity

There has been a growing interest in realizing quantum simulators for physical systems where perturbative methods are ineffective. The scalability and flexibility of circuit quantum electrodynamics make it a promising platform for implementing various types of simulators, including lattice models of strongly coupled field theories. Here, we use a multimode superconducting parametric cavity as a hardware-efficient analog quantum simulator, realizing a lattice in synthetic dimensions with complex hopping interactions. The coupling graph, i.e., the realized model, can be programmed in situ. The complex-valued hopping interaction further allows us to simulate, for instance, gauge potentials and topological models. As a demonstration, we simulate a plaquette of the bosonic Creutz ladder. We characterize the lattice with scattering measurements, reconstructing the experimental Hamiltonian and observing important precursors of topological features including nonreciprocal transport and Aharonov-Bohm caging. This platform can be easily extended to larger lattices and different models involving other interactions.

Synthetic-Space Photonic Topological Insulators Utilizing Dynamically Invariant Structure

Synthetic-space topological insulators are topological systems with at least one spatial dimension replaced by a periodic arrangement of modes, in the form of a ladder of energy levels, cavity modes, or some other sequence of modes. Such systems can significantly enrich the physics of topological insulators, in facilitating higher dimensions, nonlocal coupling, and more. Thus far, all synthetic-space topological insulators relied on active modulation to facilitate transport in the synthetic dimensions. Here, we propose dynamically invariant synthetic-space photonic topological insulators: a two-dimensional evolution-invariant photonic structure exhibiting topological properties in synthetic dimensions. This nonmagnetic structure is static, lacking any kind of modulation in the evolution coordinate, yet it displays an effective magnetic field in synthetic space, characterized by a Chern number of one. We study the evolution of topological states along the edge, and on the interface between two such structures with opposite synthetic-space chirality, and demonstrate their robust unidirectional propagation in the presence of defects and disorder. Such topological structures can be realized in photonics and cold atoms and provide a fundamentally new mechanism for topological insulators.

Optically Reconfigurable Spin-Valley Hall Effect of Light in Coupled Nonlinear Ring Resonator Lattice

Scattering immune propagation of light in topological photonic systems may revolutionize the design of integrated photonic circuits for information processing and communications. In optics, various photonic topological circuits have been developed, which were based on classical emulation of either quantum spin Hall effect or quantum valley Hall effect. On the other hand, the combination of both the valley and spin degrees of freedom can lead to a new kind of topological transport phenomenon, dubbed spin-valley Hall effect (SVHE), which can further expand the number of topologically protected edge channels and would be useful for information multiplexing. However, it is challenging to realize SVHE in most known material platforms, due to the requirement of breaking both the (pseudo)fermionic time-reversal (T) and parity symmetries (P) individually, but leaving the combined symmetry S≡TP intact. Here, we propose an experimentally feasible platform to realize SVHE for light, based on coupled ring resonators mediated by optical Kerr nonlinearity. Thanks to the inherent flexibility of cross-mode modulation, the coupling between the probe light can be engineered in a controllable way such that spin-dependent staggered sublattice potential emerges in the effective Hamiltonian. With delicate yet experimentally feasible pump conditions, we show the existence of spin-valley Hall-induced topological edge states. We further demonstrate that both degrees of freedom, i.e., spin and valley, can be manipulated simultaneously in a reconfigurable manner to realize spin-valley photonics, doubling the degrees of freedom for enhancing the information capacity in optical communication systems.

Experimental observation of non-Abelian topological charges and edge states

In the last few decades, topological phase^1-11 has emerged as a new classification of matter states beyond the Ginzburg-Landau symmetry-breaking paradigm. The underlying global invariant is usually well characterized by integers, such as Chern numbers or winding numbers-the Abelian charges^12-15. Very recently, researchers proposed the notion of non-Abelian topological charges^16-19, which possess non-commutative and fruitful braiding structures with multiple (more than one) bandgaps tangled together. Here we experimentally observe the non-Abelian topological charges in a time-reversal and inversion-symmetric transmission line network. The quaternion-valued non-Abelian topological charges are clearly mapped onto an eigenstate-frame sphere. Moreover, we find a non-Abelian quotient relation that provides a global perspective on the distribution of edge/domain-wall states. Our work opens the door towards characterization and manipulation of non-Abelian topological charges, which may lead to interesting observables such as trajectory-dependent Dirac/Weyl node collisions in two-dimensional systems^16,17,20, admissible nodal line configurations in three dimensions^16,19,20, and may provide insight into certain strongly correlated phases of twisted bilayer graphene²¹.

Room temperature electrically pumped topological insulator lasers

Topological insulator lasers (TILs) are a recently introduced family of lasing arrays in which phase locking is achieved through synthetic gauge fields. These single frequency light source arrays operate in the spatially extended edge modes of topologically non-trivial optical lattices. Because of the inherent robustness of topological modes against perturbations and defects, such topological insulator lasers tend to demonstrate higher slope efficiencies as compared to their topologically trivial counterparts. So far, magnetic and non-magnetic optically pumped topological laser arrays as well as electrically pumped TILs that are operating at cryogenic temperatures have been demonstrated. Here we present the first room temperature and electrically pumped topological insulator laser. This laser array, using a structure that mimics the quantum spin Hall effect for photons, generates light at telecom wavelengths and exhibits single frequency emission. Our work is expected to lead to further developments in laser science and technology, while opening up new possibilities in topological photonics.
