Susceptibility of human bone marrow cells and hematopoietic cell lines to coxsackievirus B3 infection

Poliovirus capsid protein VP3 can penetrate vascular endothelial cells

The poliovirus (PV) enters the central nervous system (CNS) via the bloodstream, suggesting the existence of a mechanism to cross the blood-brain barrier. Here, we report that PV capsid proteins (VP1 and VP3) can penetrate cells, with VP3 being more invasive. Two independent parts of VP3 are responsible for this function. Both peptides can penetrate human umbilical cord vascular endothelial cells, and one peptide of VP3 could also penetrate peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In an in vitro blood-brain barrier model using rat-derived astrocytes, pericytes, and endothelial cells, both peptides were observed to traverse from the blood side to the brain side at 6 h after administration. These results provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying PV invasion into the CNS.

Type B coxsackieviruses and central nervous system disorders: critical review of reported associations

Type B coxsackieviruses (CV-B) frequently infect the central nervous system (CNS) causing neurological diseases notably meningitis and encephalitis. These infections occur principally among newborns and children. Epidemiological studies of patients with nervous system disorders demonstrate the presence of infectious virus, its components, or anti-CV-B antibodies. Some experimental studies conducted in vitro and in vivo support the potential association between CV-B and idiopathic neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia. However, mechanisms explaining how CV-B infections may contribute to the genesis of CNS disorders remain unclear. The proposed mechanisms focus on the immune response following the viral infection as a contributor to pathogenesis. This review describes these epidemiological and experimental studies, the modes of transmission of CV-B with an emphasis on congenital transmission, the routes used by CV-B to reach the brain parenchyma, and plausible mechanisms by which CV-B may induce CNS diseases, with a focus on potential immunopathogenesis.

Human picornaviruses associated with neurological diseases and their neutralization by antibodies

Picornaviruses are the most commonly encountered infectious agents in mankind. They typically cause mild infections of the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract, but sometimes also invade the central nervous system. There, they can cause severe diseases with long-term sequelae and even be lethal. The most infamous picornavirus is poliovirus, for which significant epidemics of poliomyelitis were reported from the end of the nineteenth century. A successful vaccination campaign has brought poliovirus close to eradication, but neurological diseases caused by other picornaviruses have increasingly been reported since the late 1990s. In this review we focus on enterovirus 71, coxsackievirus A16, enterovirus 68 and human parechovirus 3, which have recently drawn attention because of their links to severe neurological diseases. We discuss the clinical relevance of these viruses and the primary role of humoral immunity in controlling them, and summarize current knowledge on the neutralization of such viruses by antibodies.

Differential permissivity of human cerebrovascular endothelial cells to enterovirus infection and specificities of serotype EV-A71 in crossing an in vitro model of the human blood-brain barrier

Human cerebral microvascular endothelial cells (hCMEC/D3 cell line) form a steady polarized barrier when cultured in vitro on a permeable membrane. Their susceptibility to enterovirus (EV) strains was analysed to investigate how these viruses may cross the blood-brain barrier. A sample of 88 virus strains was selected on phylogenetic features amongst 43 epidemiologically relevant types of the four EV species A-D. The EV-A71 genome was replicated at substantial rates, whilst the infectious virus was released at extremely low but sustained rates at both barrier sides for at least 4 days. EV-A71 antigens were detected in a limited number of cells. The properties of the endothelial barrier (structure and permeability) remained intact throughout infection. The chronic EV-A71 infection was in sharp contrast to the productive infection of cytolytic EVs (e.g. echoviruses E-6 and E-30). The hCMEC/D3 barriers infected with the latter EVs exhibited elevated proportions of apoptotic and necrotic cells, which resulted in major injuries to the endothelial barriers with a dramatic increase of paracellular permeability and virus crossing to the abluminal side. The following intracellular rearrangements were also seen: early destruction of the actin cytoskeleton, remodelling of intracellular membranes and reorganization of the mitochondrion network in a small cluster near the perinuclear space.

CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells support entry and replication of poliovirus: a potential new gene introduction route

Pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are critical in sustaining and constantly renewing the blood and immune system. The ability to alter biological characteristics of HSC by introducing and expressing genes would have enormous therapeutic possibilities. Previous unpublished work suggested that human HSC co-express CD34 (cluster of differentiation 34; an HSC marker) and CD155 (poliovirus receptor; also called Necl-5/Tage4/PVR/CD155). In the present study, we demonstrate the co-expression of CD34 and CD155 in primary human HSC. In addition, we demonstrate that poliovirus infects and replicates in human hematopoietic progenitor cell lines. Finally, we show that poliovirus replicates in CD34+ enriched primary HSC. CD34+ enriched HSC co-express CD155 and support poliovirus replication. These data may help further understanding of poliovirus spread in vivo and also demonstrate that human HSC may be amenable for gene therapy via poliovirus-capsid-based vectors. They may also help elucidate the normal function of Necl-5/Tage4/PVR/CD155.

Coxsackievirus B3 infects the bone marrow and diminishes the restorative capacity of erythroid and lymphoid progenitors

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is known to infect stem cells in the neonatal central nervous system. Here, we evaluated the effects of CVB3 infection on the major source and repository of stem cells, the bone marrow (BM). Viral genome was detectable in BM within 24 h of infection, and productive infection of BM cells was evident, peaking at 48 h postinfection (p.i.), when ∼1 to 2% of BM cells produced infectious virus particles. Beginning at 2 to 3 days p.i., a dramatic and persistent loss of immature erythroid cells, B and T lymphocytes, and neutrophils was observed in BM and, by day 3 to 4 p.i., the femoral BM stroma was largely destroyed. Analysis of peripheral blood revealed a modest neutrophilia, a loss of reticulocytes, and a massive lymphopenia. The abundance of multipotent progenitor cells (Lin(-)/c-kit(+)/Flt3(+)) in BM declined ∼10-fold during CVB3 infection and, consistent with a deficiency of primitive hematopoietic progenitors, serum levels of the hematopoietic growth factor Flt3 ligand were dramatically elevated. Therefore, we analyzed the regenerative capacity of BM from CVB3-infected mice. Granulocyte/macrophage progenitors displayed a relatively normal proliferative ability, consistent with the fact that the peripheral blood level of neutrophils-which are very short-lived cells-remained high throughout infection. However, erythroid and lymphoid hematopoietic progenitors in BM from CVB3-infected mice showed a markedly reduced colony-forming capacity, consonant with the observed loss of both lymphocytes and immature erythroid cells/reticulocytes from the BM and peripheral blood. In summary, CVB3 infects the BM and exerts differential effects on the various hematopoietic progenitor populations.

Cellular tropism of human enterovirus D species serotypes EV-94, EV-70, and EV-68 in vitro: implications for pathogenesis

Enterovirus 94 (EV-94) is an enterovirus serotype described recently which, together with EV-68 and EV-70, forms human enterovirus D species. This study investigates the seroprevalences of these three serotypes and their abilities to infect, replicate, and damage cell types considered to be essential for enterovirus-induced diseases. The cell types studied included human leukocyte cell lines, primary endothelial cells, and pancreatic islets. High prevalence of neutralizing antibodies against EV-68 and EV-94 was found in the Finnish population. The virus strains studied had wide leukocyte tropism. EV-94 and EV-68 were able to produce infectious progeny in leukocyte cell lines with monocytic, granulocytic, T-cell, or B-cell characteristics. EV-94 and EV-70 were capable of infecting primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells, whereas EV-68 had only marginal progeny production and did not induce cytopathic effects in these cells. Intriguingly, EV-94 was able to damage pancreatic islet β-cells, to infect, replicate, and cause necrosis in human pancreatic islets, and to induce proinflammatory and chemoattractive cytokine expression in endothelial cells. These results suggest that HEV-D viruses may be more prevalent than has been thought previously, and they provide in vitro evidence that EV-94 may be a potent pathogen and should be considered a potentially diabetogenic enterovirus type.

Antibody-dependent enhancement of coxsackievirus B3 infection of primary CD19+ B lymphocytes

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is associated with several different acute and chronic forms of human disease, including myocarditis, aseptic meningitis, and pancreatitis. Moreover, CVB3 also infects immune cells like CD19+ B lymphocytes, but the viral uptake mechanism into these cells is not well understood. Therefore, primary murine and human CD19+ B cells were isolated by magnetic-activated cell separation technology and analyzed for virus receptor expression, antibody-dependent enhancement of viral infection, and different cellular surface proteins, that might be involved in mechanisms of viral uptake. Western blot analysis of these cells revealed no significant expression of the coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor CAR. But incubation of CVB3 with serum dilutions, which exhibited binding but not neutralizing characteristics, increased viral uptake and replication significantly in a dose-dependent manner. Viral entry was reduced when Fc portions of immunoglobulins were blocked by protein A treatment. Moreover, the classical complement system rather than Fc-gamma-receptor-mediated mechanisms could be involved in viral uptake. Taken together, these data suggest an antibody-dependent enhancement of CVB3 infection of primary murine and human CD19+ B cells.

Enterovirus infections of the central nervous system

Enteroviruses (EV) frequently infect the central nervous system (CNS) and induce neurological diseases. Although the CNS is composed of many different cell types, the spectrum of tropism for each EV is considerable. These viruses have the ability to completely shut down host translational machinery and are considered highly cytolytic, thereby causing cytopathic effects. Hence, CNS dysfunction following EV infection of neuronal or glial cells might be expected. Perhaps unexpectedly given their cytolytic nature, EVs may establish a persistent infection within the CNS, and the lasting effects on the host might be significant with unanticipated consequences. This review will describe the clinical aspects of EV-mediated disease, mechanisms of disease, determinants of tropism, immune activation within the CNS, and potential treatment regimes.

Use of preconditioned human phagocytes for extracorporeal adsorption of viruses

Conventional treatment of severe viral disease is limited by the narrow choice as well as the often-significant side effects or lack of clear efficacy of antiviral chemotherapy. At the same time, however, it is known that a reduction in viral load leads to significant clinical improvement in a number of important viral diseases. In this paper we discuss the possibility of using preconditioned human phagocytes in an extracorporeal biohybrid system for adsorption of viral pathogens. We present data from in vitro experiments testing adsorption of an enterovirus and of hepatitis B virus (HBV) by a preconditioned human promyelocytic cell line. While no clearance of HBV could be detected, the results revealed a near elimination of enterovirus with the cell line displaying robust viability. Enterovirus titers of 1000 (reciprocal) were reduced to a mean titer of 10(0.6) CCID(50) with no virus detectable after adsorption in two out of five samples. Titers of 10000 (reciprocal) were in turn reduced to a mean of 10(1.4) CCID(50). The kinetics of the process was remarkable with this near elimination of the pathogen occurring within only 15min. Extracorporeal viral adsorption by a cellular biohybrid system appears feasible. Pairing target pathogens with suitable cell lines may offer a versatile antiviral technology.

Influence of pan-caspase inhibitors on coxsackievirus B3-infected CD19+ B lymphocytes

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), together with other enteroviruses of the picornavirus family, is associated with a wide variety of acute and chronic forms of human diseases. Using the murine model of CVB3-caused myocarditis, this pathogen can be detected not only in solid organs but also in different types of immune cells, preferentially in B lymphocytes. Therefore, these cells could represent a non-cardiac virus reservoir and may play an important role with regard to viral dissemination in the infected host. In addition, the infection of specific immune cells might modulate the severity of tissue injury and the pattern of virus-caused pathology in susceptible or resistant individuals. In the present study it could be demonstrated that CVB3 was capable to infect productively a certain percentage of murine CD19(+) B cells. In vivo studies revealed that CVB3 invaded murine CD19(+) B cells during an acute infection. Three days p. i. approximately 0.5-1.0% of these cells were productively infected. This proportion could be decreased up to 45%, if 3 days p. i. mice were intravenously treated with the pan-caspase inhibitors Z-VAD-FMK or Q-VD-OPH. These data were compared with results obtained from CVB3-infected human Raji cells.

Acanthamoeba castellanii promotion of in vitro survival and transmission of coxsackie b3 viruses

This work was undertaken to determine whether Acanthamoeba could play a role in the survival and transmission of coxsackieviruses and focused on in vitro interactions between Acanthamoeba castellanii and coxsackie B3 viruses (CVB-3). Residual virus titer evaluations and immunofluorescence experiments revealed a remarkable CVB-3 adsorption on amoeba surfaces and accumulation inside cells. The survival of viruses was independent of the dynamics of amoeba replication and encystment. In addition, our results indicated that virus-infected amoebas can release infectious viruses during interaction with human macrophages. On the basis of these data, Acanthamoeba appears to be a potential promoter of the survival of coxsackieviruses and their transmission to human hosts.

Binding to decay-accelerating factor is not required for infection of human leukocyte cell lines by enterovirus 70

Enterovirus 70 (EV70) is one of several human enteroviruses that exhibit a propensity for infecting the central nervous system (CNS). The mechanisms by which neurotropic enteroviruses gain access to and invade the CNS are poorly understood. One possibility is that circulating leukocytes become infected and carry neurotropic enteroviruses to the CNS. We examined the ability of EV70 to infect cell lines derived from lymphoid, myeloid, and monocytic lineages. Most leukocyte cell lines tested bound radiolabeled EV70 and were permissive for EV70 replication, suggesting that EV70, in contrast to other enteroviruses, has an in vitro tropism that includes lymphoid, monocytic, and myeloid cell lines. For some of the cell lines, virus binding and infection correlated with surface expression of decay-accelerating factor (DAF), an attachment protein for EV70 on HeLa cells. However, EV70 also adsorbed to and infected cell lines that expressed little or no DAF. In contrast to what was observed for HeLa cells, neither DAF-specific monoclonal antibodies nor phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C treatment inhibited EV70 binding to permissive leukocyte cell lines, and antibody blockade of DAF had little or no effect on EV70 replication. We also found that neither the human coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor nor intercellular cell adhesion molecule 1, which mediate the entry of coxsackie B viruses and coxsackievirus A21, respectively, functions as a receptor for EV70. EV70 binding to all cell lines was sensitive to sialidase treatment and to inhibition of O glycosylation by benzyl N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosaminide. Taken together, these results suggest that a sialylated molecule(s) other than DAF serves as a receptor for EV70 on permissive human leukocyte cell lines.

Parvovirus infection suppresses long-term repopulating hematopoietic stem cells

The functional disturbance of self-renewing and multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in viral diseases is poorly understood. In this report, we have assessed the susceptibility of mouse HSCs to strain i of the autonomous parvovirus minute virus of mice (MVMi) in vitro and during persistent infection of an immunodeficient host. Purified 5FU(r) Lin(-) Sca-1(+) primitive hematopoietic precursors were permissive for MVMi genome replication and the expression of viral gene products. The lymphoid and myeloid repopulating capacity of bone marrow (BM) cells was significantly impaired after in vitro infection, although the degree of functional effect proportionally decreased with the posttransplantation time. This indicated that MVMi targets the heterogeneous compartment of repopulating cells with differential affinity and suggests that the virus may persist in some primitive HSCs in the quiescent stage, killing those eventually recruited for proliferative activity. Immunodeficient SCID mice oronasally infected with MVMi were cured of the characteristic virus-induced lethal leukopenia by transplantation of immunocompetent BM grafts. However, two double-stranded viral DNA species, probably uncommon replicative intermediates, remained in the marrow of every transplanted mouse months after infectious virus clearance. Genetic analysis of the rescued mice showed that the infection ensured a stable engraftment of donor hematopoiesis by markedly depleting the pool of endogenous HSCs. The MVMi-induced suppression of HSC functions illustrates the accessibility of this compartment to infection during a natural viral hematological disease. These results may provide clues to understanding delayed hematopoietic syndromes associated with persistent viral infections and to prospective gene delivery to HSCs in vivo.

Encephalomyocarditis and Mengo viruses productively infect murine T-lymphocyte cell lines but not fresh ex vivo derived T lymphocytes

Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and Mengo virus are highly virulent murine cardioviruses that are found in abundant quantities in the spleen and lymph nodes after infection. T lymphocytes are pivotal mediators of humoral and cellular immunity against cardioviral challenge, and are highly suspect candidates of EMCV and Mengo virus infection. We found T lymphocyte-like cell lines CTLL-2, EL-4, LY1+2/9, and LBRM33 were susceptible to productive viral infection and exhibited cytopathology after infection with virulent EMCV-R or attenuated Mengo virus strains vMC0 and vMC24. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated progressive intracellular accumulation of viral proteins, such as the replication-dependent 3D viral polymerase, in EL-4 cells during infection. Conversely, freshly isolated and mitogen-stimulated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were resistant to productive infection with these viruses, exhibiting no viral-induced cytopathic effects or intracellular presence of viral proteins. These data indicate that although T-lymphocyte-like tumor cell lines are highly susceptible to viral infection and cytopathic effects, primary/freshly isolated T cells are resistant to infection by EMCV-R or Mengo virus.

Enhanced ERK-1/2 activation in mice susceptible to coxsackievirus-induced myocarditis

Group B coxsackieviral (CVB) infection commonly causes viral myocarditis. Mice are protected from CVB3 myocarditis by gene-targeted knockout of p56(Lck)(Lck), the Src family kinase (Src) essential for T cell activation. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 (ERK-1/2) can influence cell function downstream of Lck. Using T cell lines and neonatal cardiac myocytes we investigated the role of ERK-1/2 in CVB3 infection. In Jurkat T cells ERK-1/2 is rapidly activated by CVB3; but, this response is absent in Lck-negative JCaM T cells. Inhibition of ERK-1/2 with UO126 reduced CVB3 titers in Jurkat cells, but not in JCaM cells. In cardiac myocytes CVB3 activation of ERK-1/2 is blocked by the Src inhibitor PP2. In addition, viral production in myocytes is decreased by Src or ERK-1/2 inhibition. In vitro, in both immune and myocardial cells, ERK-1/2 is activated by CVB3 downstream of Lck and other Src's and is necessary for efficient CVB3 replication. In vivo, following CVB3 infection, ERK-1/2 activation is evident in the myocardium. ERK-1/2 activation is intense in the hearts of myocarditis-susceptible A/J mice. In contrast, significantly less ERK-1/2 activation is found in the hearts of myocarditis-resistant C57BL/6 mice. Therefore, the ERK-1/2 response to CVB3 infection may contribute to differential host susceptibility to viral myocarditis.

Suppression of proinflammatory cytokines and induction of IL-10 in human monocytes after coxsackievirus B3 infection

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) causes acute and chronic myocarditis, which is accompanied by an intense mononuclear leukocyte infiltration. Because myocardial tissue damage may either result from viral infections or from a dysregulated immune response, the susceptibility of human monocytes and macrophages to CVB3 was examined in this study with regard to virus replication, virus persistence, and release of cytokines. Monocytes were infected by CVB3 as shown by the intracellular appearance of plus- and minus-strand viral RNA, which was also capable of persisting for more than 10 days. Fresh monocytes were not permissive for full virus replication whereas monocyte-derived macrophages yielded a low amount of new viruses, which led to cell death. Although CVB3 infection induced the mRNA for the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL)-1, and IL-6, only little cytokine production occurred. When infected monocytes were stimulated in addition by lipopolysaccharides (LPS), cytokine production was partially suppressed. In striking contrast, IL-10 expression was strongly and persistently induced by CVB3 on the mRNA and the protein level. These data show a dysregulated cytokine response in CVB3-exposed human monocytes and macrophages, which is characterized by a suppression of proinflammatory cytokines and a dominance of IL-10. This viral strategy may aid CVB3, causing chronic myocardiopathy.

A decay-accelerating factor-binding strain of coxsackievirus B3 requires the coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor protein to mediate lytic infection of rhabdomyosarcoma cells

The composition of the cellular receptor complex for coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) has been an area of much contention for the last 30 years. Recently, two individual components of a putative CVB3 cellular receptor complex have been identified as (i) decay-accelerating factor (DAF) and (ii) the coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor protein (CAR). The present study elucidates the individual roles of DAF and CAR in cell entry of CVB3 Nancy. First, we confirm that the DAF-binding phenotype of CVB3 correlates to the presence of key amino acids located in the viral capsid protein, VP2. Second, using antibody blockade, we show that complete protection of permissive cells from infection by high input multiplicities of CVB3 requires a combination of both anti-DAF and anti-CAR antibodies. Finally, it is shown that expression of the CAR protein on the surface of nonpermissive DAF-expressing RD cells renders them highly susceptible to CVB3-mediated lytic infection. Therefore, although the majority of CVB3 Nancy attaches to the cell via DAF, only virus directly interacting with the CAR protein mediates lytic infection. The role of DAF in CVB3 cell infection may be analogous to that recently described for coxsackievirus A21 (D. R. Shafren, D. J. Dorahy, R. A. Ingham, G. F. Burns, and R. D. Barry, J. Virol. 71:4736-4743, 1997), in that DAF may act as a CVB3 sequestration site, enhancing viral presentation to the functional CAR protein.

Myocarditis as systemic disease: new perspectives on pathogenesis

1. Myocarditis may be an early indicator of or may subsequently lead to dilated cardiomyopathy in humans. This hypothesis has evolved from research on viruses that induce myocarditis, wherein the coxsackie B group viruses (CVB) in the family Picornaviridae are the most common known viral infectants of heart muscle. 2. Many competing hypotheses exist as to the pathogenesis of CVB3-induced myocarditis, including direct virus-induced myocyte damage and immunopathological disease with autoimmune sequelae. Evidence to support the direct-damage and viral RNA-persistence hypothesis is derived from in situ hybridization and gene amplification studies. 3. Recent use of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick-end labelling indicates that this injury in target organs is largely non-apoptotic in nature. Most apoptotic bodies in cardiac tissue are derived from immune cells. 4. Beyond infection of heart muscle, CVB3 can also associate with, infect and persist in cells of immune origin. The CVB3 localizes to follicles in spleens and lymph nodes of the murine host and this particular localization may continue in mice susceptible to more aggressive myocarditis. Whether virus-immune cell association in these compartments is advantageous (or essential) to the host in the evolution of anti-viral immune responses or whether it is more advantageous to the virus in immunosuppression of the host is not known. 5. We suggest that CVB3 can directly perturb or alter the immune response, thereby delaying viral clearance from vulnerable systemic organs. Both host and viral genetic factors can influence susceptibility, persistence and disease progression. 6. Picornaviruses use a unique method for the initiation of translation, involving the internal binding of the ribosome on a sequence element of the 5' untranslated region, termed an internal ribosome entry site (IRES). 7. The IRES of CVB3 is located at approximately stem loops G, H and I, spanning nucloetides 530 and 630. Arrest of host translation is also a feature of picornavirus infection. Such regulation of host cell translation machinery no doubt fosters viral replication at the expense of the host cell. 8. Differences between cell types in the mechanisms, along with those at other key steps in the viral life cycle and in signalling via kinase pathways, may determine viral tropism and cellular destruction and the physiological outcome of neighbouring cells.

Complement component 3 interactions with coxsackievirus B3 capsid proteins: innate immunity and the rapid formation of splenic antiviral germinal centers

Innate immunity is central to the clearance of pathogens from hosts as well as to the definition of acquired immune responses (D. T. Fearon, and R. M. Locksley, Science 272:50-53, 1996). Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), a human cardiopathic virus, was evaluated for the ability to activate the alternative and classical pathway of complement. CVB3 proteins interact with complement component 3 (C3, a soluble protein effector of innate immunity) after either in vitro exposure to mouse serum or in vivo murine infection and activate the alternative pathway of complement. In addition, we demonstrate that viral antigen retention and localization in germinal centers is dependent on C3, while virus antigen retention in extrafollicular regions in the spleen is not. In vivo depletion of native C3 abolished the rapid formation of virus-specific germinal centers (by day 3 post-CVB3 infection) in the absence of serum anti-CVB3 antibodies. These studies demonstrate that innate immune mechanisms, such as C3 interaction with CVB3, are essential for splenic antiviral germinal center formation in naive (antigen nonsensitized) mice resistant (C57BL/6J strain) and susceptible (A/J strain) to CVB3-induced myocarditis.
